RESUMEN

ERFs (ethylene-responsive factors) are known to play a key role in orchestrating cold stress signal transduction. However, the regulatory mechanisms and target genes of most ERFs are far from being well deciphered. In this study, we identified a cold-induced ERF, designated as PtrERF110, from trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf., also known as Citrus trifoliata L.), an elite cold-hardy plant. PtrERF110 is a nuclear protein with transcriptional activation activity. Overexpression of PtrERF110 remarkably enhanced cold tolerance in lemon (Citrus limon) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), whereas VIGS (virus-induced gene silencing)-mediated knockdown of PtrERF110 drastically impaired the cold tolerance. RNA sequence analysis revealed that PtrERF110 overexpression resulted in global transcriptional reprogramming of a range of stress-responsive genes. Three of the genes, including PtrERD6L16 (early responsive dehydration 6-like transporters), PtrSPS4 (sucrose phosphate synthase 4), and PtrUGT80B1 (UDP-glucose: sterol glycosyltransferases 80B1), were confirmed as direct targets of PtrERF110. Consistently, PtrERF110-overexpressing plants exhibited higher levels of sugars and sterols compared to their wild type counterparts, whereas the VIGS plants had an opposite trend. Exogenous supply of sucrose restored the cold tolerance of PtrERF110-silencing plants. In addition, knockdown of PtrSPS4, PtrERD6L16, and PtrUGT80B1 substantially impaired the cold tolerance of P. trifoliata. Taken together, our findings indicate that PtrERF110 positively modulates cold tolerance by directly regulating sugar and sterol synthesis through transcriptionally activating PtrERD6L16, PtrSPS4, and PtrUGT80B1. The regulatory modules (ERF110-ERD6L16/SPS4/UGT80B1) unraveled in this study advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying sugar and sterol accumulation in plants subjected to cold stress.

Citrus is one of the most important fruit crop genera in the world, but many Citrus species are vulnerable to cold stress. Ichang papeda (Citrus ichangensis), a cold-hardy citrus species, holds great potential for identifying valuable metabolites that are critical for cold tolerance in Citrus. However, the metabolic changes and underlying mechanisms that regulate Ichang papeda cold tolerance remain largely unknown. In this study, we compared the metabolomes and transcriptomes of Ichang papeda and HB pummelo (Citrus grandis 'Hirado Buntan', a cold-sensitive species) to explore the critical metabolites and genes responsible for cold tolerance. Metabolomic analyses led to the identification of common and genotype-specific metabolites, consistent with transcriptomic alterations. Compared to HB pummelo under cold stress, Ichang papeda accumulated more sugars, flavonoids, and unsaturated fatty acids, which are well-characterized metabolites involved in stress responses. Interestingly, sphingosine and chlorogenic acid substantially accumulated only in Ichang papeda. Knockdown of CiSPT (C. ichangensis serine palmitoyltransferase) and CiHCT2 (C. ichangensis hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA: shikimate hydroxycinnamoyltransferase2), two genes involved in sphingosine and chlorogenic acid biosynthesis, dramatically decreased endogenous sphingosine and chlorogenic acid levels, respectively. This reduction in sphingosine and chlorogenic acid notably compromised the cold tolerance of Ichang papeda, whereas exogenous application of these metabolites increased plant cold tolerance. Taken together, our findings indicate that greater accumulation of a spectrum of metabolites, particularly sphingosine and chlorogenic acid, promotes cold tolerance in cold-tolerant citrus species. These findings broaden our understanding of plant metabolic alterations in response to cold stress and provide valuable targets that can be manipulated to improve Citrus cold tolerance.

ConspectusHepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) is an inevitable complication of clinical surgeries such as liver resection or transplantation, often resulting in postoperative liver dysfunction, hepatic failure in up to 13% of postresection patients, and early graft failure in 11-18% of liver transplantation patients. HIRI involves a series of biochemical events triggered by abnormal alterations in multiple biomarkers, characterized by short lifespans, dynamic changes, subcellular regional distribution, and multicollaborative regulation. However, traditional diagnosis, including serology, imaging, and liver puncture biopsy, suffers from low sensitivity, poor resolution, and hysteresis, which hinder effective monitoring of HIRI markers. Thus, to address the unique properties of HIRI markers, there is a pressing demand for developing novel detection strategies that are highly selective, transiently responsive, dynamically reversible, subcellular organelle-targeted, and capable of simultaneous multicomponent analysis.Optical probe-based fluorescence imaging is a powerful tool for real-time monitoring of biomarkers with the advantages of high sensitivity, noninvasiveness, rapid analysis, and high-fidelity acquisition of spatiotemporal information on signaling molecules compared with conventional methods. Moreover, with the growing demand for continuous monitoring of biomarkers, probes with reversible detection features are receiving more and more attention. Importantly, reversible probes can not only monitor fluctuations in marker concentrations but also distinguish between transient bursts of markers during physiological events and long-term sustained increases in pathological marker levels. This can effectively avoid false-positive test results, and in addition, reversible probes can be reutilized with green and economical features. Therefore, our team has employed various effective methods to design reversible optical probes for HIRI. We proposed reversible recognition strategies based on specific reactions or interactions to detect dynamic changes in markers. Given the biomarkers' unique signaling in subcellular organelles and the synergistic regulatory properties of multiple markers for HIRI, bifunctional reversible detection strategies are exploited, including organelle-targeted reversible and multicomponent simultaneous detection. With these strategies, we have tailored a variety of high-fidelity fluorescent probes for a series of HIRI markers, including reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (O2•- and ONOO-), ATP, protein (Keap1), mitochondrial DNA, etc. Utilizing the probes, the in situ dynamic imaging detection of the HIRI markers was successfully achieved. While performing the precise examination of the earlier occurrence of HIRI disease and visualizing the real-time monitoring of the disease process, we have also further elucidated the HIRI-associated signaling pathways. It is envisioned that our summarized work will inspire the design of future reversible fluorescent probes and help to improve the clinical diagnosis and therapeutic efficiency of these diseases.

BACKGROUND: Platinum-resistant or refractory ovarian cancer is a highly lethal gynecologic disease with limited treatment options. Chiauranib is a novel small-molecule selective inhibitor, which could effectively target multiple pathways including Aurora B and CSF-1R to inhibit cell cycle process and improve anti-tumor immune function, as long as VEGF pathway for tumor extinction. METHODS: A phase II study was sequentially conducted after a phase Ib monotherapy study to evaluate the efficacy of chiauranib combined with chemotherapy. Chinese patients with recurrent ovarian cancer were enrolled. Eligible patients received chiauranib combined with a maximum of six cycles of chemotherapy: etoposide (CE group) or weekly-paclitaxel (CP group). Patients, who exhibited a complete or partial response, or stable disease following combo treatment, progressed to maintenance phase to receive chiauranib monotherapy. Primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) according to RECIST v1.1. RESULTS: From November 2017 to March 2019, 25 patients were enrolled in a phase 1b study and a median PFS of 3.7 months (95% CI 1.8-NE) was achieved by chiauranib monotherapy. From July 2019 to December 2020, a total of 47 patients were enrolled in the phase II study. One CP patient did not receive the study drugs, and three patients withdrew before the first tumor assessment. Thus, 43 patients (CE group: 22 patients; CP group: 21 patients) were included in the evaluation. The median PFS was 5·4 months (95% CI 2·8-5·6) and 5·6 months (95% CI 3·4-7·0), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This was the first study to evaluate chiauranib, a novel multi-targeted kinase inhibitor in patients with ovarian cancer. The administration of chiauranib along with etoposide or weekly-paclitaxel significantly enhanced the efficacy with manageable adverse events. This warrants further clinical studies on this novel treatment. A phase III study is promising and ongoing. Adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs: hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and placental disorders) are associated with cardiovascular disease risk or blood volume abnormalities. Traditional risk factors might not identify highest risk people in the early years after APO deliveries. Test the hypothesis that vascular function is worse, and plasma volume-regulating renal hormones are lower after delivery in people who did versus did not have an APO. Adult participants 6 mo-3 years postdelivery of a singleton infant participated in this cross-sectional study. Exclusion criteria included current smoking, current use of certain medications, and diabetes outside of pregnancy. Differences in measurements between participants with versus without APOs were determined with t tests or Wilcoxon tests. Associations of renal hormones with APO history were assessed with linear regression, adjusted for age, race, body mass index (BMI), and sodium consumption. Of 86 participants, 38 (44%) had an APO history. Those with APOs were more likely to identify as Black and had a higher BMI, 34.0 kg/m2 [interquartile range (IQR), 24.6, 39.3] versus 24.2 kg/m2 [IQR, 21.2, 31.3], P < 0.05. Most brachial and all aortic blood pressures were higher in those with APOs: median aortic blood pressure was 102/74 versus 96/68 mmHg, P ≤ 0.05. There were no differences in arterial stiffness or endothelial function between groups. Aldosterone was lower (54 [IQR, 28-84] vs. 80 [IQR, 39-150] pmol/L) in participants with past APOs. Blood pressures were higher, and aldosterone was lower in participants with past APOs. Associations of aldosterone with APO history persisted after adjustment. Neither renin nor aldosterone were related to vascular function.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Traditional CVD risk factors may not fully capture excess CVD risk soon after APOs. Vascular dysfunction and plasma volume irregularities may be detectable. We found people with APOs had worse blood pressures, higher BMI, and lower aldosterone levels versus those without APOs in the early years after delivery. Vascular function was similar between groups. Future research should assess vascular function and renal hormones at multiple timepoints during the perinatal period.

BACKGROUND: Ichang papeda (Citrus ichangensis), a wild perennial plant of the Rutaceae family, is a cold-hardy plant. WRKY transcription factors are crucial regulators of plant growth and development as well as abiotic stress responses. However, the WRKY genes in C. ichangensis (CiWRKY) and their expression patterns under cold stress have not been thoroughly investigated, hindering our understanding of their role in cold tolerance. RESULTS: In this study, a total of 52 CiWRKY genes identified in the genome of C. ichangensis were classified into three main groups and five subgroups based on phylogenetic analysis. Comprehensive analyses of motif features, conserved domains, and gene structures were performed. Segmental duplication plays a significant role in the CiWRKY gene family expansion. Cis-acting element analysis revealed the presence of various stress-responsive elements in the promoters of the majority of CiWRKYs. Gene ontology (GO) analysis and protein-protein interaction predictions indicate that the CiWRKYs exhibit crucial roles in regulation of both development and stress response. Expression profiling analysis demonstrates that 14 CiWRKYs were substantially induced under cold stress. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay confirmed that CiWRKY31, one of the cold-induced WRKYs, functions positively in regulation of cold tolerance. CONCLUSION: Sequence and protein properties of CiWRKYs were systematically analyzed. Among the 52 CiWRKY genes 14 members exhibited cold-responsive expression patterns, and CiWRKY31 was verified to be a positive regulator of cold tolerance. These findings pave way for future investigations to understand the molecular functions of CiWRKYs in cold tolerance and contribute to unravelling WRKYs that may be used for engineering cold tolerance in citrus.

BACKGROUND: The prospective phase III multi-centre L-MOCA trial (NCT03534453) has demonstrated the encouraging efficacy and manageable safety profile of olaparib maintenance therapy in the Asian (mainly Chinese) patients with platinum-sensitive relapsed ovarian cancer (PSROC). In this study, we report the preplanned exploratory biomarker analysis of the L-MOCA trial, which investigated the effects of homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression on olaparib efficacy. METHODS: HRD status was determined using the ACTHRD assay, an enrichment-based targeted next-generation sequencing assay. PD-L1 expression was assessed by SP263 immunohistochemistry assay. PD-L1 expression positivity was defined by the PD-L1 expression on ≥ 1% of immune cells. Kaplan-Meier method was utilised to analyse progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS: This exploratory biomarker analysis included 225 patients and tested HRD status [N = 190; positive, N = 125 (65.8%)], PD-L1 expression [N = 196; positive, N = 56 (28.6%)], and BRCA1/2 mutation status (N = 219). The HRD-positive patients displayed greater median PFS than the HRD-negative patients [17.9 months (95% CI: 14.5-22.1) versus 9.2 months (95% CI: 7.5-13.8)]. PD-L1 was predominantly expressed on immune cells. Positive PD-L1 expression on immune cells was associated with shortened median PFS in the patients with germline BRCA1/2 mutations [14.5 months (95% CI: 7.4-18.2) versus 22.2 months (95% CI: 18.3-NA)]. Conversely, positive PD-L1 expression on immune cells was associated with prolonged median PFS in the patients with wild-type BRCA1/2 [20.9 months (95% CI: 13.9-NA) versus 8.3 months (95% CI: 6.7-13.8)]. CONCLUSIONS: HRD remained an effective biomarker for enhanced olaparib efficacy in the Asian patients with PSROC. Positive PD-L1 expression was associated with decreased olaparib efficacy in the patients with germline BRCA1/2 mutations but associated with improved olaparib efficacy in the patients with wild-type BRCA1/2. Polyamines (PAs) are pleiotropic bioorganic molecules. Cellular PA contents are determined by a balance between PA synthesis and degradation. PAs have been extensively demonstrated to play vital roles in the modulation of plant developmental processes and adaptation to various environmental stresses. In this review, the latest advances on the diverse roles of PAs in a range of developmental processes, such as morphogenesis, organogenesis, growth and development, and fruit ripening, are summarized and discussed. Besides, the crosstalk between PAs and phytohormones or other signalling molecules, including H2O2 and NO, involved in these processes is dwelled on. In addition, the attempts made to improve the yield and quality of grain and vegetable crops through altering the PA catabolism are enumerated. Finally, several other vital questions that remain unanswered are proposed and discussed. These include the mechanisms underlying the cooperative regulation of developmental processes by PAs and their interplaying partners like phytohormones, H2O2 and NO; PA transport for maintaining homeostasis; and utilization of PA anabolism/catabolism for generating high-yield and good-quality crops. This review aims to gain new insights into the pleiotropic role of PAs in the modulation of plant growth and development, which provides an alternative approach for manipulating and engineering valuable crop varieties that can be used in the future.

The demand for a high-performance position sensitive detector (PSD), a novel type of photoelectric sensor, is increasing due to advancements in digitization and automation technology. Cadmium sulfide (CdS), a non-centrosymmetric material, holds significant potential in photoelectric devices. However, the pyroelectric effect of CdS in PSDs and its influence on lateral photoresponse are still unknown. In this work, we fabricated an ITO/CdS/Si heterojunction using chemical bath deposition (CBD) and investigated the pyro-phototronic effect under nonuniform illumination. The theory of electron-hole pairs' generation, separation, and carrier diffusion was carefully considered to understand the underlying mechanisms. Our experimental findings revealed that the device exhibited an exceptionally high position sensitivity (PS) of 1061.3 mV/mm, surpassing the generally observed PS of 655.1 mV/mm induced by single photovoltaic effect by 160.5%. Meanwhile, the PSD demonstrated rapid response times of 0.01 and 0.04 ms, respectively. Moreover, the influence of ambient temperature and electrode distance on the pyro-phototronic effect was well analyzed. Notably, the PSD exhibited remarkable stability even at ambient temperatures up to 150 °C. Despite the considerable working distance of 11 mm, the PS of the PSD remained at 128.99 mV/mm. These findings provide valuable theoretical and experimental foundations for optimizing the design and implementation of high-performance large working distance PSDs.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are associated with abnormal cardiovascular biomarkers and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, studies investigating associations between sleep problems and CVD biomarkers have reported conflicting findings. This study examined the associations between sleep problems and CVD biomarkers in the United States. METHODS: Data were from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2018) and analyses were restricted to adults ≥ 20 years (n = 23,749). CVD biomarkers [C-reactive Protein (CRP), low-density lipoproteins, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), triglycerides, insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and fasting blood glucose] were categorized as abnormal or normal using standardized cut-off points. Sleep problems were assessed by sleep duration (short [≤ 6 h], long [≥ 9 h], and recommended [> 6 to < 9 h) and self-reported sleep disturbance (yes, no). Multivariable logistic regression models explored the associations between sleep duration, sleep disturbance, and CVD biomarkers adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle behaviors. RESULTS: The mean sleep duration was 7.1 ± 1.5 h and 25.1% of participants reported sleep disturbances. Compared to participants with the recommended sleep duration, those with short sleep duration had higher odds of abnormal levels of HDL (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-1.39), CRP (aOR = 3.08, 95% CI = 1.18-8.05), HbA1c (aOR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.05-1.49), and insulin (aOR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.03-1.51). Long sleep duration was associated with increased odds of abnormal CRP (aOR = 6.12, 95% CI = 2.19-17.15), HbA1c (aOR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.09-2.17), and blood glucose levels (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.07-1.95). Sleep disturbance predicted abnormal triglyceride (aOR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.01-1.37) and blood glucose levels (aOR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.04-1.49). CONCLUSION: Short and long sleep durations were positively associated with abnormal CRP, HDL, HbA1c, blood glucose, and insulin levels, while sleep disturbance was associated with abnormal triglyceride and blood glucose levels. Since sleep is a modifiable factor, adopting healthy sleeping habits may create a balanced metabolism and reduce the risk of developing a CVD. Our study may provide insights into the relationship between sleep duration, sleep disturbance, and CVD risk.

BACKGROUND: There are big differences in treatments and prognosis between diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and non-diabetic renal disease (NDRD). However, DKD patients couldn't be diagnosed early due to lack of special biomarkers. Urine is an ideal non-invasive sample for screening DKD biomarkers. This study aims to explore DKD special biomarkers by urinary proteomics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to the result of renal biopsy, 142 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients were divided into 2 groups: DKD (n = 83) and NDRD (n = 59). Ten patients were selected from each group to define urinary protein profiles by label-free quantitative proteomics. The candidate proteins were further verifyied by parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) methods (n = 40). Proteins which perform the same trend both in PRM and proteomics were verified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) with expanding the sample size (n = 82). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the accuracy of diagnostic biomarkers. RESULTS: We identified 417 peptides in urinary proteins showing significant difference between DKD and NDRD. PRM verification identified C7, SERPINA4, IGHG1, SEMG2, PGLS, GGT1, CDH2, CDH1 was consistent with the proteomic results and p < 0.05. Three potential biomarkers for DKD, C7, SERPINA4, and gGT1, were verified by ELISA. The combinatied SERPINA4/Ucr and gGT1/Ucr (AUC = 0.758, p = 0.001) displayed higher diagnostic efficiency than C7/Ucr (AUC = 0.632, p = 0.048), SERPINA4/Ucr (AUC = 0.661, p = 0.032), and gGT1/Ucr (AUC = 0.661, p = 0.029) respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The combined index SERPINA4/Ucr and gGT1/Ucr can be considered as candidate biomarkers for diabetic nephropathy after adjusting by urine creatinine.

RESUMEN

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an emerging technology for real-time monitoring based on the impedance differences of different tissues and organs in the human body. It has been initially applied in clinical research as well as disease diagnosis and treatment. Lung perfusion refers to the blood flow perfusion function of lung tissue, and the occurrence and development of many diseases are closely related to lung perfusion. Therefore, real-time monitoring of lung perfusion is particularly important. The application and development of EIT further promote the monitoring of lung perfusion, and related research has made great progress. This article reviews the principles of EIT imaging, lung perfusion imaging methods, and their clinical applications in recent years, with the aim of providing assistance to clinical and scientific researchers.

Introduction: Few studies have examined the associations of intimate partner violence (IPV) exposure during pregnancy and types of IPV with antenatal depression among underserved pregnant women. Methods: Data came from participants from a Healthy Start program in South Carolina between 2015 and 2019 (n = 1,629). The first two questions in the Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) were used to measure IPV exposure, that is, having a problematic relationship with their partner. Those who had IPV exposure were assessed with six additional questions of the WAST. Principal component analysis was conducted on the 8-item WAST data to identify underlying types of IPV exposure. Antenatal depression was defined as the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scores ≥16. Results: Participants were racially diverse (71% black, 21% white) with 85% Medicaid recipients. Nearly 12% of participants reported IPV exposure and 30% reported antenatal depression. The odds of having IPV exposure were higher among unmarried women, those with less than a high school education, and those who lacked family support. The odds of having antenatal depression were 2.5 times higher (95% CI: 1.9-3.5) among women with IPV exposure. After controlling for covariates, a one-point increase in the scores for psychological IPV (Factor 1) or a problematic relationship (Factor 3) was associated with increased odds of antenatal depression. Conclusion: This is one of the first studies to estimate the prevalence of IPV exposure using a proxy measure (a problematic relationship) among underserved U.S. pregnant women. Its positive association with antenatal depression suggests the utility of screening for a problematic relationship using a two-item WAST and providing assistance to those with IPV exposure.

Fluorescence microscopic images of cells contain a large number of morphological features that are used as an unbiased source of quantitative information about cell status, through which researchers can extract quantitative information about cells and study the biological phenomena of cells through statistical and analytical analysis. As an important research object of phenotypic analysis, images have a great influence on the research results. Saturation artifacts present in the image result in a loss of grayscale information that does not reveal the true value of fluorescence intensity. From the perspective of data post-processing, we propose a two-stage cell image recovery model based on a generative adversarial network to solve the problem of phenotypic feature loss caused by saturation artifacts. The model is capable of restoring large areas of missing phenotypic features. In the experiment, we adopt the strategy of progressive restoration to improve the robustness of the training effect and add the contextual attention structure to enhance the stability of the restoration effect. We hope to use deep learning methods to mitigate the effects of saturation artifacts to reveal how chemical, genetic, and environmental factors affect cell state, providing an effective tool for studying the field of biological variability and improving image quality in analysis.

Background: Sleep disorders are one of the most common non-motor symptoms in PD. It can cause a notable decrease in quality of life and functioning in PD patients, as well as place a huge burden on both patients and caregivers. Currently, there are numerous non-pharmacological interventions available to improve sleep quality in PD, with disagreement as to which intervention is most effective. This network meta-analysis was performed to compare and rank non-pharmacological interventions to explore their efficacy in improving sleep quality in PD and to select the best interventions, with a view to providing references and bases for the development of clinical treatments and care programs. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases were searched from inception to December 6, 2023. Two authors independently screened all studies, extracted the data, and evaluated risk of bias of included studies. STATA software version 17.0 was used to conduct the network meta-analysis. Results: Our network meta-analysis included 29 studies involving 1,477 participants and 16 non-pharmacological interventions. Although most nonpharmacological interventions showed non-significant effects, the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values indicated that the best non-pharmacological intervention for sleep disorders was massage therapy (97.3%), followed by music therapy (94.2%), and Treadmill training (85.7%). Conclusion: Massage therapy can be considered as an effective therapy for improving sleep quality in patients with PD. Due to limited quantity and quality of the included studies, more high quality studies are required to verify the conclusions of this network meta-analysis. Exploring the effects of climate oscillations on the population diversity and structure of endangered organisms in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area is essential for hydrological environment changes on endangered organism evolution. Myricaria laxiflora is an endemic and endangered shrub restricted to the TGR along the banks of Yangtze River, China. Recently, six natural populations of this species were newly found upstream and downstream of the TGR, whose habitats have been dramatically changed by the summer flooding regulated by large dams. To study the water level fluctuations and climatic shifts on the genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of the six natural populations, 303 individuals from six populations were analyzed based on one nuclear DNA (ITS) and four chloroplast fragments (trnL-F, psbA-trnH, rps16, and rpl16). The phylogenetic tree and significant genetic divergence identified in the cpDNA and ITS with genetic isolation and limited gene flow among regions suggested that the six populations separated well to two groups distributed upstream and downstream. The MaxEnt modeling results indicated that obvious unidirectional eastward migration via Yangtze River gorges watercourse mediated from Last Interglacial to Last Glacial Maximum were showed with the narrow scale distributions of six remnant populations and nine extirpated populations. The initial habitat fragmentation could be triggered by the accumulation of local habitat loss of the impoundment of the TGR during the Present period and might remain stable restoration with bidirectional diffusion in the Future. Divergences among M. laxiflora populations might have been induced by the drastic changes of the external environment and limited seed/pollen dispersal capacity, as the results of long-term ecological adaptability of summer flooding stress. The haplotypes of nuclear gene could be used for population's differentiation and germplasm protection. This identified gene flow and range dynamics have provided support for the gene-flow and geology hypothesis. It is also crucial for rescuing conservation to understand the impact of environmental dynamics on endangered organism evolution.

Background: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is related with resistant hypertension and cardiovascular events. Adrenal artery embolization (AAE) is a choice for patients who refused surgery and medical therapy. However, whether AAE can effectively and safely treat PA is unclear. We performed this meta-analysis to determine the efficacy and safety of AAE for patients with PA. Methods: Databases including Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed and Web of Science were used to obtain relevant articles published before July 30, 2023. The primary outcome was blood pressure before and after AAE. The second outcomes included changes in plasma aldosterone level, serum potassium level, and plasma cortisol level. Results: Finally, 7 prospective studies with 222 patients were included. The results showed that systolic and diastolic blood pressure was reduced by 21.68 mmHg (P<0.001) and 10.54 mmHg (P=0.007) respectively after AAE. The change in plasma aldosterone and serum potassium level was -11.52 ng/dL and 0.61 mmol/L respectively (P<0.001), whereas the reduction in cortisol level was not apparent. Moreover, AAE is a relatively safe procedure which only causes some minor complications such as back pain and fever. Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicated that AAE could effectively and safely treat PA. It is a good choice for patients that are not suitable for adrenalectomy or drug therapy.

Background and Aim: Previously observed associations between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and perinatal outcomes using a between-individual method may be confounded by unmeasured maternal factors. This study aims to examine the association between IPI and adverse perinatal outcomes using within-individual comparative analyses. Methods: We studied 10,647 individuals from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Consecutive Pregnancies Study in Utah with ≥3 liveborn singleton pregnancies. We matched two IPIs per individual and used conditional logistic regression to examine the association between IPI and adverse perinatal outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB, <37 weeks' gestation), small-for-gestational-age (SGA, <10th percentile of sex-specific birthweight for gestational age), low birthweight (LBW, <2,500 g), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. Point and 95% confidence interval (CI) estimates were adjusted for factors that vary across pregnancies within individuals. Results: CIs did not unequivocally support either an increase or a decrease in the odds of PTB (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.31, 95% CI: 0.87, 1.96), SGA (aOR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.51, 1.28), LBW (aOR: 1.59, 95% CI: 0.90, 2.80), or NICU admission (aOR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.66, 1.40) for an IPI <6 months compared to 18-23-months IPI (reference), and neither did the CIs for the aOR of IPIs of 6-11 and 12-18 months compared to the reference. In contrast, an IPI ≥24 months was associated with increased odds of LBW (aOR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.66 for 24-29 months; aOR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.21, 4.29 for 30-35 months; and aOR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.17, 3.72 for ≥36 months). Conclusions: Using a within-individual comparative method, we did not find evidence that a short IPI compared to the recommended IPI of 18-23 months was associated with increased odds of PTB, SGA, LBW, and NICU admission. IPI ≥ 24 months was associated with increased odds of delivering an LBW infant.

Background: Traditional meta-analysis offers only direct comparative evidence. The optimal cognitive training for poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) remains largely undetermined. Objectives: This study aims to assess and compare the effectiveness of selected cognitive training methods for PSCI patients and to identify and rank the most effective intervention programs. Methods: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Wanfang Database, and China Biomedical Database for randomized controlled trials up to September 30, 2023. Two researchers independently performed literature screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. Network meta-analysis was utilized to synthesize the main findings. The primary outcome focused on the intervention's impact on subjective cognitive function, with secondary outcomes including effects on activities of daily living, motor function, and functional independence. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023463282). Results: Fifty eligible randomized controlled trials were identified, revealing eight distinct interventions. These interventions collectively demonstrate efficacy in enhancing cognition. Traditional cognitive training significantly improves overall cognitive function, daily living function, motor function, and functional independence. In Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment, Barthel Index, Fugl-Meyer Assessment, and Functional Independence Measure scales, a combination of computer-based and traditional cognitive training outperformed the conventional control group MD = 29.97 (95%CI: 16.3, 44.2), MD = 18.67 (95%CI: 9.78, 27.45), MD = 28.76 (95%CI: 5.46, 51.79) and MD = 42.2 (95%CI: 5.25, 78.99). In the MMSE scale, virtual reality cognitive training combined with traditional training was most effective MD = 8.01 (95%CI: 3.6, 12.4). On the MoCA scale, the combination of exercise and cognitive training showed superior results MD = 6.68 (95%CI: 2.55, 10.78). Only the combined computer-based and traditional cognitive training, as well as traditional cognitive training alone, significantly enhanced functional independence, with no notable differences in other pairwise interventions. Conclusion: The network meta-analysis suggests that augmenting traditional training with other modalities may enhance overall effectiveness. Specifically, interventions incorporating computer-based cognitive training appear to surpass other methods in improving cognition, daily living function, motor skills, and functional independence. The findings of this network meta-analysis provide evidence-based guidance for clinical decision-making. After the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, numerous individuals experienced the enduring consequences of infection. One of the psychological symptoms that patients report most frequently is persistent fatigue, which is also called post-COVID-19 fatigue. This persistent fatigue can prolong recovery time for hospitalized patients and reduce exercise motivation for residents, affecting their health and working conditions. To determine the prevalence and associated factors, we conducted searches in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, from inception to 27 March 2023, and a total of 38 studies and 17,738 patients were included in this analysis. We analyzed data and estimated publication bias by Egger's test and funnel plot by STATA 14. We summarized the prevalence of post-COVID-19 fatigue and calculated the pooled OR to determine associated factors. This study revealed that the prevalence of fatigue in post-COVID-19 syndrome was 46.6% (95% CI: 38.5%-54.7%). Being female (OR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.24-0.56), older age (OR: 0.04, 95% CI: 0.01-0.07), clinical severity (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.24-1.09), the number of acute COVID symptoms (OR: 3.23, 95% CI: 1.83-5.69), preexisting hypertension (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.08-1.42), lung disease (OR: 2.71, 95% CI: 1.07-6.89), and depression (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.01-2.39) were risk factors for post-COVID-19 fatigue. By revealing the association of these factors with fatigue, it can help us to identify and treat post-COVID-19 fatigue early.
