RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Studies of residential greenness and depression symptoms among community-dwelling older adults in China are limited. However, understanding the role of greenness in depression symptoms among older adults can inform depression prevention and interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the relationship between residential greenness and depression symptoms among community-dwelling older adults in China. METHODS: A cluster random sampling method was used to survey 7512 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and above from three towns in Shanghai. Depression symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS30). Residential greenness was measured using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Long-term greenspace exposure was defined as the mean NDVI and EVI in the three years prior to the baseline survey. Controlling for the covariates, the relationship between greenness and depression symptoms was assessed using binomial logistic regression and mixed-effects linear regression. Interaction analysis was conducted to explore which covariates potentially alter the association. We also assessed the mediating role of physical activity. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression symptoms among the participants was 13.72%. Higher residential greenness was associated with lower odds of depression symptoms, after adjusting for covariates. In the logistic regression analysis, the odds of depression symptoms decreased with increasing NDVI and EVI. In linear regression analysis, GDS30 scores decreased with increasing NDVI and EVI. Interaction analyses revealed that higher NDVI and EVI were more protective against depression among male individuals and older adults living with others than among female individuals and older adults living alone. Additionally, physical activity had a masking effect on residential greenness and depression symptoms. CONCLUSION: Higher residential greenness is associated with lower odds of depression symptoms in community-dwelling Chinese older adults. Increasing urban and neighborhood green spaces may contribute to the prevention and intervention of depression symptoms in community-dwelling older adults.

RESUMEN

Photodetectors displaying an ultraviolet (UV) spectral response window are typically based on wide-bandgap semiconductors that have long been dominated by inorganic materials that suffer from bottlenecks of low flexibility and a limited material family. Here, we synthesized a novel organic small molecule and controlled its crystallization to suppress leakage currents and facilitate separation of the carriers, and the relationship between the nanoscale phase separation morphology and the optoelectrical performance of the photodetectors is disclosed. Our optimized organic photodetector (OPD) presents a UV spectral response window, with superior self-powered responsivities of 45 mA/W (under 250 nm light) and 70 mA/W (under 300 nm light), outperforming the Si photodiode and rivaling other reported UV self-powered photodetectors. Finally, an imaging system was constructed to demonstrate the application potential of the OPD in UV flexible imaging with high-resolution arrays of 400 pixels × 400 pixels (5 µm × 5 µm per pixel), which could work in bent states and successfully output images of micrometer-sized objects.

RESUMEN

Microplastics have become pervasive in ambient aquatic ecosystems over the last decade and are currently a serious global scale concern. To evaluate the potential toxic effects of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) microplastics on the immune functions of freshwater fish, this study undertook a conducted chronic 60-day dietary exposure experiment with Cyprinus carpio var. larvae. We exposed the fish to four microplastic treatments of different concentrations (food rationed diets): no-plastic (control), 10%, 20% and 30%. At the end of the experimental period the impacts of microplastics on the histology, biochemistry, ROS (reactive oxygen species) levels and gene transcription of immune organs were investigated. The results revealed that PVC microplastics induced cytoplasmic vacuolation in the liver, damaged villi in the intestine, inflammatory cell infiltration, hemosiderosis and vacuolar degeneration in the spleen, glomeruli tuft shrinkage and aggregation of melanin macrophage cells in the kidney. Moreover, following PVC microplastics exposure, ROS levels in the liver and protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-6, IL-8, and TNFα in the liver and serum were increased. Furthermore, modifications in the activities of non-specific immunoenzyme ACP (Acid phosphatase), AKP (alkaline phosphatase), LZM (lysozyme), and expression levels of a range of immune-related genes were observed. Using various techniques at the histological, biochemical and molecular levels, our findings demonstrated the effects of PVC microplastics on changes and imbalances in the immune status of carp. The results of this study provide basic toxicological data toward elucidating and quantifying the impacts of microplastics immunotoxicity on aquatic organisms.

RESUMEN

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and its alternative 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) are ubiquitous in various environmental and human samples. They have been reported to have hepatotoxicity effects, but the potential mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we integrated metabolomics and proteomics analysis to investigate the altered profiles in metabolite and protein levels in primary human hepatocytes (PHH) exposed to 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS at human exposure relevant concentrations. Our results showed that 6:2 Cl-PFESA exhibited higher perturbation effects on cell viability, metabolome and proteome than PFOS. Integration of metabolomics and proteomics revealed that the alteration of glycerophospholipid metabolism was the critical pathway of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS-induced lipid metabolism disorder in primary human hepatocytes. Interestingly, 6:2 Cl-PFESA-induced cellular metabolic process disorder was associated with the cellular membrane-bounded signaling pathway, while PFOS was associated with the intracellular transport process. Moreover, the disruption effects of 6:2 Cl-PFESA were also involved in inositol phosphate metabolism and phosphatidylinositol signaling system. Overall, this study provided comprehensive insights into the hepatic lipid toxicity mechanisms of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS in human primary hepatocytes.

RESUMEN

Depression is a mental illness that has a serious negative impact on physical and mental health. The pathophysiology of depression is still unknown, and therapeutic medications have drawbacks, such as poor effectiveness, strong dependence, adverse drug withdrawal symptoms, and harmful side effects. Therefore, the primary purpose of contemporary research is to understand the exact pathophysiology of depression. The connection between astrocytes, neurons, and their interactions with depression has recently become the focus of great research interest. This review summarizes the pathological changes of neurons and astrocytes, and their interactions in depression, including the alterations of mid-spiny neurons and pyramidal neurons, the alterations of astrocyte-related biomarkers, and the alterations of gliotransmitters between astrocytes and neurons. In addition to providing the subjects of this research and suggestions for the pathogenesis and treatment techniques of depression, the intention of this article is to more clearly identify links between neuronal-astrocyte signaling processes and depressive symptoms.

RESUMEN

The first metal-free method for alkylation of quinoxalinones using cheap and stable aryl alkyl ketones as nucleophilic alkylation reagents is reported. This strategy greatly broadens the application channels of aryl alkyl ketones through carbon-carbon bond activation. In addition, the protocol has the advantages of simple operation, broad substrate scope, and good functional group tolerance.

RESUMEN

We first report two-dimensional (2D) perovskite Ca2Nb3O10 ultraviolet photodetectors (UV PDs), which are prepared via a facile calcination-exfoliation method. The 2D Ca2Nb3O10 PDs demonstrate high performance at 3 V at 280 nm, high responsivity (14.94 A W-1), high detectivity (8.7 × 1013 Jones), high spectral selectivity (R280/R400 = 8.84 × 103), fast speed (0.08/5.6 ms), and long-term stability, exceeding those of most reported UV PDs. Furthermore, the Ca2Nb3O10 PDs integrated with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) show excellent flexibility and have high linear dynamic range (96 dB). Our work provides a general strategy for searching new UV PDs based on numerous layered niobates. The Ca2Nb3O10 nanosheets may be one of the optimum semiconductor materials for next-generation high-performance UV PDs.

RESUMEN

Investigating the contributing factors of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) has always been an important topic in the field of traumatic psychology research. The current study explored the influences of pandemic/epidemic experiences, meditation experiences, and trait mindfulness on PTSS and the mediating role of emotional resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 522 participants in Hubei province completed the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, the Adolescents' Emotional Resilience Questionnaire, and the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed that (1) participants who had family or friends diagnosed with COVID-19 scored higher on avoidance. (2) Participants who had family or friends had been diagnosed with SARS or H1N1 scored higher on PTSS. (3) Participants with meditation experience scored significantly higher on all dimensions of PTSS, other than avoidance. (4) The mediating role of recovering from negative emotions in the relationship between trait mindfulness and PTSS was significant (95%CI= [-0.212, -0.094]), while the generating positive emotion was not significant (95%CI= [-0.050, 0.071]). Individuals with pandemic/epidemic experience are more likely to have a high level of PTSS. Individuals who have meditation experience also express a higher level of PTSS, which may be a result of the quality of meditation. Trait mindfulness and the ability to recover from negative emotions were protective factors against PTSS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Plants have remarkable diversity in petal colour through the biosynthesis and accumulation of various pigments. To better understand the mechanisms regulating petal pigmentation in Lonicera japonica, we used multiple approaches to investigate the changes in carotenoids, anthocyanins, endogenous hormones and gene expression dynamics during petal colour transitions, i.e., green bud petals (GB_Pe), white flower petals (WF_Pe) and yellow flower petals (YF_Pe). RESULTS: Metabolome analysis showed that YF_Pe contained a much higher content of carotenoids than GB_Pe and WF_Pe, with α-carotene, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin and γ-carotene identified as the major carotenoid compounds in YF_Pe. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that the key differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in carotenoid biosynthesis, such as phytoene synthase, phytoene desaturase and ζ-carotene desaturase, were significantly upregulated in YF_Pe. The results indicated that upregulated carotenoid concentrations and carotenoid biosynthesis-related genes predominantly promote colour transition. Meanwhile, two anthocyanins (pelargonidin and cyanidin) were significantly increased in YF_Pe, and the expression level of an anthocyanidin synthase gene was significantly upregulated, suggesting that anthocyanins may contribute to vivid yellow colour in YF_Pe. Furthermore, analyses of changes in indoleacetic acid, zeatin riboside, gibberellic acid, brassinosteroid (BR), methyl jasmonate and abscisic acid (ABA) levels indicated that colour transitions are regulated by endogenous hormones. The DEGs involved in the auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, BR, jasmonic acid and ABA signalling pathways were enriched and associated with petal colour transitions. CONCLUSION: Our results provide global insight into the pigment accumulation and the regulatory mechanisms underlying petal colour transitions during the flower development process in L. japonica.

RESUMEN

The WRKY gene family, which is one of the largest transcription factor (TF) families, plays an important role in numerous aspects of plant growth and development, especially in various stress responses. However, the functional roles of the WRKY gene family in loquat are relatively unknown. In this study, a novel WRKY gene, EjWRKY17, was characterized from Eriobotrya japonica, which was significantly upregulated in leaves by melatonin treatment during drought stress. The EjWRKY17 protein, belonging to group II of the WRKY family, was localized in the nucleus. The results indicated that overexpression of EjWRKY17 increased cotyledon greening and root elongation in transgenic Arabidopsis lines under abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Meanwhile, overexpression of EjWRKY17 led to enhanced drought tolerance in transgenic lines, which was supported by the lower water loss, limited electrolyte leakage, and lower levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Further investigations showed that overexpression of EjWRKY17 promoted ABA-mediated stomatal closure and remarkably up-regulated ABA biosynthesis and stress-related gene expression in transgenic lines under drought stress. Overall, our findings reveal that EjWRKY17 possibly acts as a positive regulator in ABA-regulated drought tolerance.

RESUMEN

Selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) are less toxic and more biocompatible than selenite or selenate. However, studies involving spraying with Se NPs for reducing accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in rice grains have been rarely reported as yet. Herein, indica rice seedlings cultivated in Cd+Pb-spiked paddy soils (denoted as positive control) were sprayed with Se NPs sols for four times from tillering to booting stage. Compared to positive control, 50-100 µmol/L Se NPs downregulated Cd transporters-related genes such as OsLCT1, OsHMA2 and OsCCX2 in leaves and OsLCT1, OsPCR1 and OsCCX2 genes in node I at filling stage. Meanwhile, Se-binding protein 1 was distinctly elevated, involving the repression of Cd and Pb transportation to rice grains. Se NPs also differentially improved RuBP carboxylase and chlorophylls especially some key genes and proteins involving photosynthetic system. Besides, 25-50 µmol/L Se NPs diminished reactive oxygen species overproduction from NADPH oxidases whereas boosted glutathione peroxidase, reducing protein carbonylation in rice seedlings. However, the antioxidant isozymes and oxidatively modified proteins were slightly rebounded at 100 µmol/L. Se contents were noticeably elevated and confirmed to exist as selenomethionine in the rice grains following all the treatments by Se NPs. Thus, the optimal dosage of Se NPs for foliar application is 50 µmol/L, which significantly decreased Cd accumulation, improved photosynthesis and Se enrichment whereas caused no distinct reduction of Pb in the grains. Thus, an appropriate dosage of Se NPs can be conducted to decrease Cd accumulation, improve photosynthesis, and organic Se contents in rice grains.

RESUMEN

Hyperbranched polytriazine functionalized with humic acid was prepared and developed as new sorbents for dispersive solid-phase extraction of three acaricides (clofentezine, fenpyroximate, and pyridaben) in tea samples combined with high-performance liquid chromatography detection. The sorbents were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Zeta-potential, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The extraction parameters (extraction time, ionic strength, desorption conditions) were optimized. The adsorption mechanism was evaluated utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectra. Under optimum conditions, satisfactory analytical performances were achieved, which included high precision (1.33-9.62%), low limits of detection (0.19-3.54 µg/L), and wide linear range (2.5-500 µg/L) for the analysis of the acaricides. Moreover, the proposed method proved highly effective for the determination of acaricides in tea samples, with the relative recoveries in the range of 65.20-108.13% and relative standard deviations < 9.87%. The method has great application potential for the detection of acaricides in tea samples.

RESUMEN

The DnaJ-like zinc finger domain-containing proteins are involved in different aspects of plastid function and development. Some of these proteins were recently reported to have dual subcellular localization in the nucleus and plastids. One member of this family, PSA2 (AT2G34860), was found to localize to the thylakoid lumen and regulate the assembly of photosystem I (PSI). However, PSA2 was also annotated as Embryo sac Development Arrest 3 (EDA3) from the observation that its embryo sac development was arrested at the two-nuclear stage. In this study, we characterized the eda3 mutant, and demonstrated that, as compared with the wild-type (WT) plants, the mutant has shorter siliques, fewer siliques per plant, and fewer seeds per silique. Both aborted and undeveloped ovules were observed in siliques of the mutant. By immunoblot analysis, we found that, different from the chloroplast localization in mature leaves, EDA3 localizes in the nucleus in seeds. A nuclear localization signal was identified from the deduced amino acid sequence of EDA3, and also proved to be sufficient for directing its fusion peptide into the nucleus.

RESUMEN

In this work, a method for the analysis of benzoylurea insecticides, including hexaflumuron, flufenoxuron, lufenuron and chlorfluazuron, in tea samples by high-performance liquid chromatography with Fe3 O4 -hyperbranched polyester nanocomposite as the adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction was developed. The magnetic nanocomposite was prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The as-prepared nanocomposite was used as a sorbent for the extraction and preconcentration of pesticide residues in tea samples. The extraction and desorption conditions, including mass ratios of raw materials, amount of sorbent, pH value, extraction time, and desorption time, were investigated. Under the final conditions chosen for the analysis, good linearity was obtained for all the tested compounds, with R2 values of at least 0.9979. The limits of detection were determined in the range of 0.15-0.3 µg/L. The recovery obtained from the analysis of tea samples with various spiked concentrations was between 90.7 and 98.4%, with relative standard deviations (n = 4) lower than 4.1%. Furthermore, the present approach was successfully applied to the quantitative determination of residues of benzoylurea insecticides in real samples.

RESUMEN

A magnetic sorbent was fabricated by covalently grafting hyperbranched polyamidoamine onto the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The sorbent was used in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) from environmental water samples. It is perceived that hydrogen bonding interactions and hydrophobic interactions are the main mechanisms for the adsorption of BUs. The sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and X-ray diffraction. Various experimental parameters affecting the MSPE were optimized. Following elution with acetonitrile, the BUs were quantified by HPLC with diode array detection. The method based has a wide linear response range (2.5-500.0 ng mL-1), satisfactory coefficient of determination (0.9922-0.9976), high enrichment factors (62.8-74.4), acceptable limits of quantitation (2.5 ng mL-1) and low limits of detection (0.39-0.72 ng mL-1). The intra-day precision at concentration levels of 5.0, 50.0 and 250.0 ng mL-1 ranged from 2.3-6.4% and the inter-day precision was between 1.0 and 5.5%. The sorbent can be re-used at least 15 times. It was applied to the extraction of BUs from genuine water samples where it showed satisfactory relative recoveries (75.1-111.4%) and precision (1.0-9.1%). RESUMEN

A distinction has recently been drawn between surface distortions and deep distortions in false memory, where the former are conventional errors of commission and the latter are illogical relations among multiple memories of items. The deep distortions that have been studied to date are violations of the logical rules that govern incompatibility relations, such as additivity and countable additivity. Because that work is confined to laboratory word-list tasks, it is subject to the ecological validity criticism that memory for everyday facts may not exhibit such phenomena. We report evidence that memory for everyday facts displays the same deep distortions as laboratory tasks. We developed a version of the conjoint-recognition paradigm that measures memory for incompatible general knowledge facts, similar to those found on the quiz program Jeopardy! In experiments with university participants, four deep distortions were detected (violations of the additivity, countable additivity, universal set, and compensation rules), with participants consistently remembering more than what is logically possible. The distortions were more robust than in laboratory experiments, and memories of incompatible facts (e.g., Jupiter and Saturn cannot both be the largest planet in the solar system) did not suppress each other. These patterns were replicated in subsequent experiments with older and more diverse participant samples. Consistent with the notion that deep distortions are by-products of gist memory, conjoint-recognition modeling analyses revealed that memory for everyday facts was even more reliant on gist than memory for word lists, and that verbatim memory was near-floor. RESUMEN

Viscosity is a typical physical parameter and plays an important role in nutrient transferring, diffusion process regulating and safety warning. Aberrant mitochondrial viscosity is closely associated with an imbalance in a liquid system. Nevertheless, there is currently a lack of convenient and efficient tools for the mutation of viscosity detection at the molecular level. Herein, a natural product xanthohumol (XTH) was extracted from Humulus lupulus and used to measure the microenvironmental viscosity. Due to the existence of carbonyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups, a typical twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) was formed. The conjugated single and double bonds can be employed as the rotatable site. Consequently, a turn-on method based on viscosity response is developed. High sensitivity (x = 0.56) with a remarkable enhancement (55-fold) toward viscosity and a visualized fluorescent signal can be found. In addition, it displays a single selectivity with excellent photostability and pH stability in the complex liquid system. Using the extracted XTH, a typical application toward the liquid spoilage process was performed and a positive correlation was noted. Given the comprehensive properties of XTH, liquid safety inspection at a molecular level with natural source-extracted products can be obtained.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate and analyse the predictive value of systemic inflammatory markers based on peripheral blood biomarkers for the prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Based on a retrospective monitoring cohort of 973 NSCLC patients from an Affiliated Tumor Hospital from 2012 to 2023. The log-rank test and Cox proportional risk regression model were used to identify independent prognostic inflammatory markers. Subsequently, a nomogram prediction model was constructed and evaluated. The results of multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that patients with high NLR group (HR = 1.238, 95% CI 1.015-1.510, P = 0.035), and high CAR group (HR = 1.729, 95% CI 1.408-2.124, P < 0.001) were risk factors affecting the prognosis of NSCLC patients. The nomogram that includes age, tumor stage, smoking history, BMI, NLR, and CAR can effectively predict the prognosis of NSCLC patients. The inflammatory markers NLR and CAR, which combine inflammatory and nutritional status, are effective predictors of the prognosis of NSCLC patients. The combination of clinical information and these easily accessible inflammatory markers has significant research value for prognostic assessment, clinical treatment, and follow-up monitoring of NSCLC patients.

RESUMEN

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced metabolic disorders have attracted increasing attention, however, the underlying molecular mechanism of PM2.5-induced hepatic bile acid disorder remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of PM2.5 components on the disruption of bile acid in hepatocytes through farnesoid X receptor (FXR) pathway. The receptor binding assays showed that PM2.5 extracts bound to FXR directly, with half inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 21.7 µg/mL. PM2.5 extracts significantly promoted FXR-mediated transcriptional activity at 12.5 µg/mL. In mouse primary hepatocytes, we found PM2.5 extracts (100 µg/mL) significantly decreased the total bile acid levels, inhibited the expression of bile acid synthesis gene (Cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase, Cyp7a1), and increased the expression of bile acid transport genes (Multidrug resistance associated protein 2, Abcc2; and Bile salt export pump, Abcb11). Moreover, these alterations were significantly attenuated by knocking down FXR in hepatocytes. We further divided the organic components and water-soluble components from PM2.5, and found that two components bound to and activated FXR, and decreased the bile acid levels in hepatocytes. In addition, benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) and cadmium (Cd) were identified as two bioactive components in PM2.5-induced bile acid disorders through FXR signaling pathway. Overall, we found PM2.5 components could bind to and activate FXR, thereby disrupting bile acid synthesis and transport in hepatocytes. These new findings also provide new insights into PM2.5-induced toxicity through nuclear receptor pathways.

RESUMEN

Background: Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, a rapidly emerging treatment for cancer that has gained momentum since its approval by the FDA in 2017, involves the genetic engineering of patients' T cells to target tumors. Although significant therapeutic benefits have been observed, life-threatening adverse pulmonary events have been reported. Methods: Using SAS 9.4 with MedDRA 26.1, we retrospectively analyzed data from the Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, covering the period from 2017 to 2023. The analysis included the Reporting Odds Ratio Proportional Reporting Ratio Information Component and Empirical Bayes Geometric Mean to assess the association between CAR-T cell therapy and adverse pulmonary events (PAEs). Results: The FAERS database recorded 9,400 adverse events (AEs) pertaining to CAR-T therapies, of which 940 (10%) were PAEs. Among these CAR-T cell-related AEs, hypoxia was the most frequently reported (344 cases), followed by respiratory failure (127 cases). Notably, different CAR-T cell treatments demonstrated varying degrees of association with PAEs. Specifically, Tisa-cel was associated with severe events including respiratory failure and hypoxia, whereas Axi-cel was strongly correlated with both hypoxia and tachypnea. Additionally, other CAR-T therapies, namely, Brexu-cel, Liso-cel, Ide-cel, and Cilta-cel, have also been linked to distinct PAEs. Notably, the majority of these PAEs occurred within the first 30 days post-treatment. The fatality rates varied among the different CAR-T therapies, with Tisa-cel exhibiting the highest fatality rate (43.6%), followed by Ide-cel (18.8%). Conclusion: This study comprehensively analyzed the PAEs reported in the FAERS database among recipients of CAR-T cell therapy, revealing conditions such as hypoxia, respiratory failure, pleural effusion, and atelectasis. These CAR-T cell therapy-associated events are clinically significant and merit the attention of clinicians and researchers.
