RESUMEN

The crosstalk between hematopoietic lineages is important for developmental hematopoiesis. However, the role of primitive red blood cells (RBCs) in the formation of definitive hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) is largely unknown. Primitive RBC deficiencies in mammals always lead to early embryonic lethality, but zebrafish lines with RBC deficiencies can survive to larval stage. By taking advantage of a zebrafish model, we find that the survival of nascent HSPCs is impaired in alas2- or alad-deficient embryos with aberrant heme biosynthesis in RBCs. Heme-deficient primitive RBCs induce ferroptosis of HSPCs through the disruption of iron homeostasis. Mechanistically, heme-deficient primitive RBCs cause blood iron-overload via Slc40a1, and an HSPC iron sensor, Tfr1b, mediates excessive iron absorption. Thus, iron-induced oxidative stress stimulates the lipid peroxidation, which directly leads to HSPC ferroptosis. Anti-ferroptotic treatments efficiently reverse HSPC defects in alas2 or alad mutants. HSPC transplantation assay reveals that the attenuated erythroid reconstitution efficiency may result from the ferroptosis of erythrocyte-biased HSPCs. Together, these results illustrate that heme-deficient primitive RBCs are detrimental to HSPC production and may provide potential implications for iron dysregulation-induced hematological malignancies.

Local adaptation is critical in speciation and evolution, yet comprehensive studies on proximate and ultimate causes of local adaptation are generally scarce. Here, we integrated field ecological experiments, genome sequencing, and genetic verification to demonstrate both driving forces and molecular mechanisms governing local adaptation of body coloration in a lizard from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We found dark lizards from the cold meadow population had lower spectrum reflectance but higher melanin contents than light counterparts from the warm dune population. Additionally, the colorations of both dark and light lizards facilitated the camouflage and thermoregulation in their respective microhabitat simultaneously. More importantly, by genome resequencing analysis, we detected a novel mutation in Tyrp1 that underpinned this color adaptation. The allele frequencies at the site of SNP 459# in the gene of Tyrp1 are 22.22% G/C and 77.78% C/C in dark lizards and 100% G/G in light lizards. Model-predicted structure and catalytic activity showed that this mutation increased structure flexibility and catalytic activity in enzyme TYRP1, and thereby facilitated the generation of eumelanin in dark lizards. The function of the mutation in Tyrp1 was further verified by more melanin contents and darker coloration detected in the zebrafish injected with the genotype of Tyrp1 from dark lizards. Therefore, our study demonstrates that a novel mutation of a major melanin-generating gene underpins skin color variation co-selected by camouflage and thermoregulation in a lizard. The resulting strong selection may reinforce adaptive genetic divergence and enable the persistence of adjacent populations with distinct body coloration.

N2O is a dominant atmosphere pollutant, causing ozone depletion and global warming. Currently, electrochemical reduction of N2O has gained increasing attention to remove N2O, but its product is worthless N2. Here, we propose a direct eight-electron (8e) pathway to electrochemically convert N2O into NH3. As a proof of concept, using density functional theory calculation, an Fe2 double-atom catalyst (DAC) anchored by N-doped porous graphene (Fe2@NG) was screened out to be the most active and selective catalyst for N2O electroreduction toward NH3 via the novel 8e pathway, which benefits from the unique bent N2O adsorption configuration. Guided by theoretical prediction, Fe2@NG DAC was fabricated experimentally, and it can achieve a high N2O-to-NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 77.8% with a large NH3 yield rate of 2.9 mg h-1 cm-2 at -0.6 V vs RHE in a neutral electrolyte. Our study offers a feasible strategy to synthesize NH3 from pollutant N2O with simultaneous N2O removal.

Variations in functional traits serve as measures of plants' ability to adapt to environment. Exploring the patterns of functional traits of desert plants along elevational gradients is helpful to understand the responses and adaptation strategies of species to changing environments. However, it is unknown whether the relationship between functional traits and elevation is affected by differences in the species' elevational distributions (elevation preference and species' range). Importantly, most researches have concerned with differences in mean trait values and ignored intraspecific trait variation. Here, we measured functional traits of desert plants along a wide elevational gradient in the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas and explored functional trait patterns over elevation in species with different elevational distributions. We decomposed trait variation and further investigated characterizations of intraspecific variation. Ultimately, the main drivers of trait variation were identified using redundancy analysis. We found that species' elevational distributions significantly influenced the relationship of functional traits such as plant height, leaf dry matter content, leaf thickness, leaf nitrogen and carbon content with elevation. Species with a lower elevational preference showed greater trait variation than species with a higher elevational preference, suggesting that species that prefer high elevation are more conservative facing environmental changes. We provide evidence that interspecific trait variation in leaf thickness and leaf carbon content decreased with increasing species' range, indicating that increased variations in resistance traits within species make greater responsiveness to environmental changes, enabling species a wider range. Elevation, temperature and precipitation were the main drivers of trait variation in species with a low elevational preference, while the effect of precipitation on trait variation in species with a high elevational preference was not significant. This study sheds new insights on how plants with different elevational distributions regulate their ecological strategies to cope with changing environments.

Monozygotic (MZ) twins cannot be distinguished using conventional forensic STR typing because they present identical STR genotypings. However, MZ twins do not always live in the same environment and often have different dietary and other lifestyle habits. Metabolic profiles are deyermined by individual characteristics and are also influenced by the environment in which they live. Therefore, they are potential markers capable of identifying MZ twins. Moreover, the production of proteins varies from organism to organism and is influenced by both the physiological state of the body and the external environment. Hence, we used metabolomics and proteomics to identify metabolites and proteins in peripheral blood to discriminate MZ twins. We identified 1749 known metabolites and 622 proteins in proteomic analysis. The metabolic profiles of four pairs of MZ twins revealed minor differences in intra-MZ twins and major differences in inter-MZ twins. Each pair of MZ twins exhibited distinct characteristics, and four metabolites-methyl picolinate, acesulfame, paraxanthine, and phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid-were observed in all four MZ twin pairs. These four differential exogenous metabolites conincidently show that the different external environments and life styles can be well distinguished by metabolites, considering that twins do not all have the same eating habits and living environments. Moreover, MZ twins showed different protein profiles in serum but not in whole blood. Thus, our results indicate that differential metabolites provide potential biomarkers for the personal identification of MZ twins in forensic medicine.

Persulfate oxidants are widely used in soil remediation and wastewater treatment but perform poorly in degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially heavy fractions in solids. Herein, we propose the utilization of a green peroxymonosulfate-ferrate-FeS (PFI) oxidant as a promising process aid for remediating soils contaminated with heavy petroleum components, including asphaltenes and resins. The PFI oxidant could degrade heavy petroleum fractions because of dual activation of the peroxymonosulfate and ferrate by FeS at ambient conditions. Nevertheless, when dealing with soil with high oil content (>10%), the degradation efficiency remains limited (<30%) regardless of the quantity of oxidants employed. Surface elemental analysis shows that a coating of secondary products (Fe(OH)3, Fe2O3) on the surface and in pores of the soil-pollutant matrix explains the failure of oxidation and inefficient use of oxidant. To address this issue, a strategy of pre-solvent extraction-oxidation hybrid process with sequent acidic washing is proposed, where dichloromethane serves as the solvent, and PFI acts as the oxidant. In this system over 90% of the oil could be recovered with an oxidation efficiency of 80% by alleviating the problem of iron oxide coating the matrix surface. The oxidant consumption is also reduced to 70 wt% of the sludge. The PFI oxidant is found to exhibit excellent universality in treating oily sludge with low petroleum content (<2%), reducing the petroleum content in the residue to less than 0.3 wt% (meeting the national standards). The degradation of low oil content sludge by the PFI oxidant followed pseudo first-order kinetics. These findings not only elucidate the failure of PFI oxidation for high oil content oily sludge and identify its potential engineering application range, but also offer a practical strategy for processing petroleum-contaminated soil with varying oil contents through wet oxidation.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the fast 3-dimensional NerveVIEW (3D NerveVIEW) with diffusion-weighted imaging with background suppression (DWIBS) in imaging of lumbosacral plexus and its branches. METHODS: A prospective study was performed on 30 healthy volunteers and patients who had undergone compressed sensing 3D NerveVIEW and DWIBS scans. There were 11 healthy subjects, 15 patients with lumbar disc herniation, and 4 patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. Image quality was rated using a 4-point subjective scale. Quantitative evaluation of the nerves was done by measuring signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio, and signal-to-background ratio, and the consistency in the measurements of nerve root cross-sectional areas was also assessed. The differences of signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio, signal-to-background ratio, and the scores of image quality between 2 sequences were compared. RESULTS: The overall average image quality score of 3D NerveVIEW was significantly higher than that of DWIBS (2.72 ± 0.45 and 2.45 ± 0.81, respectively; P < 0.01). In terms of individual nerves, there was no significant difference between the 2 sequences in the display of the nerves from L2 to S1; however, 3D NerveVIEW was significantly better than DWIBS in demonstration of the S2-S3 nerves, as well as the nerve details. Regarding quantitative measurements, these sequences achieved comparable results with excellent interobserver agreements. CONCLUSION: Fast 3D NerveVIEW was superior to DWIBS with improved conspicuity of small distal nerves of S2-S3 and nerve details.

During vertebrate embryogenesis, fetal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) exhibit expansion and differentiation properties in a supportive hematopoietic niche. To profile the developmental landscape of fetal HSPCs and their local niche, here, using single-cell RNA-sequencing, we deciphered a dynamic atlas covering 28,777 cells and 9 major cell types (23 clusters) of zebrafish caudal hematopoietic tissue (CHT). We characterized four heterogeneous HSPCs with distinct lineage priming and metabolic gene signatures. Furthermore, we investigated the regulatory mechanism of CHT niche components for HSPC development, with a focus on the transcription factors and ligand-receptor networks involved in HSPC expansion. Importantly, we identified an endothelial cell-specific G protein-coupled receptor 182, followed by in vivo and in vitro functional validation of its evolutionally conserved role in supporting HSPC expansion in zebrafish and mice. Finally, comparison between zebrafish CHT and human fetal liver highlighted the conservation and divergence across evolution. These findings enhance our understanding of the regulatory mechanism underlying hematopoietic niche for HSPC expansion in vivo and provide insights into improving protocols for HSPC expansion in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ability of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT to predict new lesions in Takayasu arteritis. METHODS: Eighty-two Chinese patients with newly diagnosed Takayasu arteritis were recruited. Their clinical characteristics, serum biomarkers and imaging results were recorded at baseline and every visit. They were followed up for at least 2 years. New angiographic lesions were evaluated by magnetic resonance angiography. Baseline PET vascular activity scores (PETVAS) for predicting new lesions were evaluated. RESULTS: At baseline, a moderate correlation was observed between PETVAS and ESR (r = 0.74, P < 0.01) and CRP level (r = 0.69, P < 0.01). Overall, 18 (22%) patients showed new lesions on imaging during a median follow-up time of 36 months. The median time to the first occurrence of new lesions was 18 months. Compared with patients without new lesions, the patients with new lesions included more female patients (67.2% vs 94.4%, P = 0.03), patients with higher ESR values (20 vs 49, P = 0.02) and patients with active disease (62.5% vs 94.4%, P < 0.01). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed PETVAS was an independent risk factor for new angiographic lesions (PETVAS ≥8, hazard ratio = 7.56; 95% CI 2.20, 26.01, P < 0.01) with adjustment of age, sex, chest pain, ESR and Physician Global Assessment. Furthermore, patients with PETVAS ≥8 at baseline were more likely to experience adverse events including arterial ischaemic events during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: PETVAS showed good performance in predicting new lesions in Takayasu arteritis.

It is well known that various developmental signals play diverse roles in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) production; however, how these signaling pathways are orchestrated remains incompletely understood. Here, we report that Rab5c is essential for HSPC specification by endocytic trafficking of Notch and AKT signaling in zebrafish embryos. Rab5c deficiency leads to defects in HSPC production. Mechanistically, Rab5c regulates hemogenic endothelium (HE) specification by endocytic trafficking of Notch ligands and receptor. We further show that the interaction between Rab5c and Appl1 in the endosome is required for the survival of HE in the ventral wall of the dorsal aorta through AKT signaling. Interestingly, Rab5c overactivation can also lead to defects in HSPC production, which is attributed to excessive endolysosomal trafficking inducing Notch signaling defect. Taken together, our findings establish a previously unrecognized role of Rab5c-mediated endocytic trafficking in HSPC development and provide new insights into how spatiotemporal signals are orchestrated to accurately execute cell fate transition.

OBJECTIVES: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is an established treatment for local stenosis. The most common complication is new ipsilateral ischemic lesions (NIILs). This study aimed to develop models considering lesion morphological and compositional features, and radiomics to predict NIILs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty-six patients who underwent brain MRI and high-resolution vessel wall MR imaging (hrVWI) before and after CAS were retrospectively recruited. Lumen and outer wall boundaries were segmented on hrVWI as well as atherosclerotic components. A traditional model was constructed with patient clinical information, and lesion morphological and compositional features. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm was performed to determine key radiomics features for reconstructing a radiomics model. The model in predicting NIILs was trained and its performance was tested. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients were NIIL-positive and eighty-five negative. Volume percentage of intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) and patients' clinical presentation (symptomatic/asymptomatic) were risk factors of NIILs. The traditional model considering these two features achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.778 and 0.777 in the training and test cohorts, respectively. Twenty-two key radiomics features were identified and the model based on these features achieved an AUC of 0.885 and 0.801 in the two cohorts. The AUCs of the combined model considering IPH volume percentage, clinical presentation, and radiomics features were 0.893 and 0.842 in the training and test cohort respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with traditional features (clinical and compositional features), the combination of traditional and radiomics features improved the power in predicting NIILs after CAS. KEY POINTS: • Volume percentage of IPH and symptomatic events were independent risk factors of new ipsilateral ischemic lesions (NIILs). • Radiomics features derived from carotid artery high-resolution vessel wall imaging had great potential in predicting NIILs after CAS. • The combination model with radiomics and traditional features further improved the diagnostic performance than traditional features alone.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study investigated the postthymectomy outcomes and factors affecting the prognosis of thymomatous generalized myasthenia gravis (TGMG). METHODS: Clinical records of 86 patients with TGMG who underwent thymectomy at our institution between 2012 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Predictors of complete stable remission (CSR) and exacerbation were analyzed using multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 16 patients achieved CSR, four achieved pharmacological remission, six exhibited deterioration, and eight died of myasthenia gravis (MG; mean follow-up = 75.1 months). Male sex (p = 0.049) and disease duration < 11.5 weeks before surgery (p = 0.003) were significant positive predictors of CSR. Onset age < 52.8 years and symptoms of ocular and limb muscle weakness had a higher CSR rate than onset age > 52.8 years (p = 0.056) and symptoms of bulbar muscles (p = 0.071). Female patients had a significant higher risk of exacerbation (p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Male sex and disease duration < 11.5 weeks were independent predictors of CSR in TGMG postthymectomy. Onset age < 52.8 years and ocular and limb muscle weakness at onset were associated with a higher probability of achieving CSR than onset age > 52.8 years and bulbar muscle weakness. Female sex was an independent predictor of MG symptom exacerbation in TGMG postthymectomy.

The basic research indicated that microglial P2Y12 receptors (P2Y12Rs) are involved in the pathophysiology of epilepsy through regulated microglial-neuronal interactions, aberrant neurogenesis, or immature neuronal projections. However, whether the clinic case of epilepsy would be associated with P2Y12 receptor gene polymorphisms is presented with few data. In our study, a total of 176 patients with epilepsy and 50 healthy controls were enrolled. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms, namely rs1491974 and rs6798347, were selected for analysis. The results revealed that carriers of the G allele of rs1491974 G>A or rs6798347 G>A may be associated with an increased risk of epilepsy (OR = 0.576, 95% CI = 0.368-0.901, p = 0.015; OR = 0.603, 95% CI = 0.367-0.988, p = 0.043). Interestingly, we found that the rs1491974 G>A genotype and allele frequencies have only a significant difference in female instead of male case (p = 0.004 for genotype; p = 0.001 for allele). The subgroup analysis demonstrated that individuals with the rs1491974 G>A genotype might have more frequent seizure (OR = 0.476, 95% CI = 0.255-0.890; p = 0.019). These data implied that both rs1491974 and rs6798347 polymorphisms of P2Y12R would be able to play import roles in epilepsy susceptibility, whereas the rs1491974 polymorphism may be specifically related to seizure frequency.

Forensic DNA analysis of semen-vaginal fluid mixed stains is essential and necessary in sexual assault cases. Here, we used a magnetic bead conjugated acrosin binding protein (ACRBP) antibody to separate and enrich sperm cells from mixed stains. Previously, western blotting indicated that ACRBP was specifically expressed in sperm cells, but not in female blood and epithelial cells, while immunofluorescence data showed ACRBP was localized to the acrosome in sperm cells. In our study, sperm were separated from mixed samples at three sperm cell/female buccal epithelial cell ratios (103:103; 103:104; and 103:105) using a magnetic bead conjugated ACRBP antibody. Subsequently, 23 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci were amplified using the Huaxia™ Platinum PCR Amplification System and genotyped using capillary electrophoresis. The genotyping success rate for STR loci was 90% when the sperm to female buccal epithelial cell ratio was > 1:100 in mixed samples. Our results suggest that the magnetic bead conjugated ACRBP antibody is effective for isolating sperm cells in sexual assault cases.

Differentiating between monozygotic (MZ) twins remains difficult because they have the same genetic makeup. Applying the traditional STR genotyping approach cannot differentiate one from the other. Heteroplasmy refers to the presence of two or more different mtDNA copies within a single cell and this phenomenon is common in humans. The levels of heteroplasmy cannot change dramatically during transmission in the female germ line but increase or decrease during germ-line transmission and in somatic tissues during life. As massively parallel sequencing (MPS) technology has advanced, it has shown the extraordinary quantity of mtDNA heteroplasmy in humans. In this study, a probe hybridization technique was used to obtain mtDNA and then MPS was performed with an average sequencing depth of above 4000. The results showed us that all ten pairs of MZ twins were clearly differentiated with the minor heteroplasmy threshold at 1.0%, 0.5%, and 0.1%, respectively. Finally, we used a probe that targeted mtDNA to boost sequencing depth without interfering with nuclear DNA and this technique can be used in forensic genetics to differentiate the MZ twins.

Double-atom catalysts (DACs) for harmful nitrate (NO3-) electroreduction to valuable ammonia (eNO3RR) is attractive for both environmental remediation and energy transformation. However, the limited metal loading in most DACs largely hinders their applications in practical catalytic applications. Therefore, exploring ultrahigh-density (UHD) DACs with abundant active metal centers and excellent eNO3RR activity is highly desired under the site-distance effect. Herein, starting from the experimental M2N6 motif deposited on graphene, we firstly screened the low-density (LD) Mn2N6 and Fe2N6 DACs with high eNO3RR activity and then established an appropriate activity descriptor for the LD-DAC system. By utilizing this descriptor, the corresponding Mn2N6 and Fe2N6 UHD-DACs with dynamic, thermal, thermodynamic, and electrochemical stabilities, are identified to locate at the peak of activity volcano, exhibiting rather-low limiting potentials of -0.25 and -0.38 V, respectively. Further analysis in term of spin state and orbital interaction, confirms that the electronic state effect similar to that of LD-DACs enable the excellent eNO3RR activity to be maintained in the UHD-DACs. These findings highlight the promising application of Mn2N6 and Fe2N6 UHD-DACs in nitrate electroreduction for NH3 production and provide impetus for further experimental exploration of ultrahigh-density DACs based on their intrinsic electronic states.

The extensive use of herbicides has raised concerns about crop damage, necessitating the development of effective herbicide safeners. Fluxofenim has emerged as a promising herbicide safener; however, it's underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we screened two inbred lines 407B and HYZ to investigate the detoxication of fluxofenim in mitigating metolachlor damage in sorghum. Metolachlor inhibited seedling growth in both 407B and HYZ, while, fluxofenim could significantly restore the growth of 407B, but not effectively complement the growth of HYZ. Fluxofenim significantly increased the activities of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) to decrease metolachlor residue in 407B, but not in HYZ. This implys that fluxofenim may reduce metolachlor toxicity by regulating its metabolism. Furthermore, metolachlor suppressed AUX-related and JA-related genes expression, while up-regulated the expression of SA-related genes. Fluxofenim also restored the expression of AUX-related and JA-related genes inhibited by metolachlor and further increased expression of SA-related genes. Moreover, we noted a significant increase in the content of trans-zeatin O-glucoside (tZOG) and Gibberellin1 (GA1) after the fluxofenim treatment. In conclusion, fluxofenim may reduce the injury of herbicide by affecting herbicide metabolism and regulating hormone signaling pathway.

Resource utilization of solid waste can aid in gradual substitution of fossil fuels while achieving waste recycling. In this study, residual carbon and ash slag from the coal gasification fine slag were separated by froth flotation, and then was used to prepare Ru/C and ZSM-5 dual catalysts with carbon-rich and ash-rich components as raw materials, respectively. The performance of two catalysts for catalytic upgrading of volatiles from pyrolysis of cow manure (CM) to produce light aromatic hydrocarbons was systematically investigated. The direct pyrolysis products of CM mainly included alcohols, ketones, ethers, and other oxygen-containing compounds. When ZSM-5 was used as the catalyst, the yield of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) increased significantly due to the better catalytic cracking and aromatization abilities of ZSM-5 catalyst. However, the yield of phenols in the pyrolysis products improved when Ru/C was used as the catalyst due to the cleavage effect of Ru/C on the C-O bond. When Ru/C and ZSM-5 were used as dual catalysts in relay catalytic pyrolysis of volatiles, the increase in MAHs yield in the pyrolysis product was higher than the total increase obtained under Ru/C and ZSM-5 single catalysis. The possible pathways for the generation of MAHs from CM under Ru/C and ZSM-5 relay catalytic pyrolysis were revealed by the pyrolysis experiment performed on model compounds.

BACKGROUND: Inter- and intraspecific variation in plant traits play an important role in grassland community assembly under global change scenarios. However, explorations of how these variations contribute to the responses of community traits to nitrogen (N) addition and drought in different grassland types are lacking. We measured the plant height, leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf N content (LNC) and the ratio of leaf carbon (C) to leaf N (C:N) in a typical and a meadow steppe after three years of N addition, drought and their interaction. We determined the community-weighted means (CWMs) of the six traits to quantify the relative contribution of inter- and intraspecific variation to the responses of community traits to N addition and drought in the two steppes. RESULTS: The communities in the two steppes responded to N addition and the interaction by increasing the CWM of LNC and decreasing C:N. The community in the meadow steppe responded to drought through increased CWM of LNC and reduced C:N. Significant differences were observed in SLA, LDMC, LNC and C:N between the two steppes under different treatments. The SLA and LNC of the community in the meadow steppe were greater than those of the typical steppe, and the LDMC and C:N exhibited the opposite results. Moreover, variation in community traits in the typical steppe in response to N addition and drought was caused by intraspecific variation. In contrast, the shifts in community traits in the meadow steppe in response to N addition and drought were influenced by both inter- and intraspecific variation. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate that intraspecific variation contributed more to community functional shifts in the typical steppe than in the meadow steppe. Intraspecific variation should be considered to understand better and predict the response of typical steppe communities to global changes. The minor effects of interspecific variation on meadow steppe communities in response to environmental changes also should not be neglected.

Anatase TiO2 is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high specific capacity, low cost, and excellent cycle stability. However, low electrical conductivity and poor Na+ ion transport in TiO2 limit its practical applications. Here, substantially boosted Na+ ion transport and charge transfer kinetics are demonstrated by constructing a near-ideal non-rectifying titanium carbonitride/nitrogen-doped TiO2 (TiCx N1- x /N-TiO2 ) heterostructure. Owing to the fast plasma effects and metastable hybrid phases, the TiCx N1- x is epitaxially grown on TiO2 . Energy band engineering at the interface induces high electron densities and a strong built-in electric field, which lowers the Na+ diffusion barrier by a factor of 1.7. As a result, the TiCx N1- x /N-TiO2 electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. The reversible specific capacities at rates of 0.1 and 10 C reach 312.3 and 173.7 mAh g-1 , respectively. After 600 cycles of charge and discharge at 10 C, the capacity retention rate is 98.7%. This work discovers an effective non-equilibrium plasma-enabled process to construct heterointerfaces that can enhance Na+ ion transport and provides generic guidelines for the design of heterostructures for a broader range of energy storage, separation, and other devices that rely on controlled ionic transport.
