RESUMEN

Recruitment of immune cells to the injury site plays a pivotal role in the pathology of radiation-associated diseases. In this study, we investigated the impact of the chemokine CCL22 released from alveolar type II epithelial (AT2) cells after irradiation on the recruitment and functional changes of dendritic cells (DCs) in the development of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). By examining changes in CCL22 protein levels in lung tissue of C57BL/6N mice with RILI, we discovered that ionizing radiation increased CCL22 expression in irradiated alveolar AT2 cells, as did MLE-12 cells after irradiation. A transwell migration assay revealed that CCL22 promoted the migration of CCR4-positive DCs to the injury site, which explained the migration of pulmonary CCR4-positive DCs in RILI mice in vivo. Coculture experiments demonstrated that, consistent with the response of regulatory T cells in the lung tissue of RILI mice, exogenous CCL22-induced DCs promoted regulatory T cell proliferation. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that Dectin2 and Nr4a2 are key targets in the CCL22 signaling pathway, which was confirmed in pulmonary DCs of RILI mice. As a result, CCL22 upregulated the expression of PD-L1, IL-6, and IL-10 in DCs. Consequently, we identified a mechanism in which CCL22 induced DC tolerance through the CCR4-Dectin2-PLC-γ2-NFATC2-Nr4a2-PD-L1 pathway. Collectively, these findings demonstrated that ionizing radiation stimulates the expression of CCL22 in AT2 cells to recruit DCs to the injury site and further polarizes them into a tolerant subgroup of CCL22 DCs to regulate lung immunity, ultimately providing potential therapeutic targets for DC-mediated RILI.

Nanoparticles are fascinating and encouraging carriers for cancer treatment due to their extraordinary properties and potential applications in targeted drug delivery, treatment, and diagnosis. Experimental studies including in vitro and in vivo examinations show that nanoparticles can cause a revolution in different aspects of cancer therapy. Normal tissue toxicity and early and late consequences are the major limitations of cancer therapy by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, the delivery of drugs into tumors or reducing the accumulation of drugs in normal tissues can permit a more satisfactory response of malignancies to therapy with more inferior side effects. Cardiac toxicity is one of the major problems for chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Therefore, several experimental studies have been performed to minimize the degenerative impacts of cancer treatment on the heart and also enhance the influences of radiotherapy and chemotherapy agents in cancers. This review article emphasizes the benefits of nanoparticle-based drug delivery techniques, including minimizing the exposure of the heart to anticancer drugs, enhancing the accumulation of drugs in cancers, and expanding the effectiveness of radiotherapy. The article also discusses the challenges and problems accompanied with nanoparticle-based drug delivery techniques such as toxicity, which need to be addressed through further research. Moreover, the article emphasizes the importance of developing safe and effective nanoparticle-based therapies that can be translated into clinical practice.

Childhood maltreatment is an established risk factor for psychopathology. However, it remains unclear how childhood traumatic events relate to mental health problems and how the brain is involved. This study examined the serial mediation effect of brain morphological alterations and emotion-/reward-related functions on linking the relationship from maltreatment to depression. We recruited 156 healthy adolescents and young adults and an additional sample of 31 adolescents with major depressive disorder for assessment of childhood maltreatment, depressive symptoms, cognitive reappraisal and anticipatory/consummatory pleasure. Structural MRI data were acquired to identify maltreatment-related cortical and subcortical morphological differences. The mediation models suggested that emotional maltreatment of abuse and neglect, was respectively associated with increased gray matter volume in the ventral striatum and greater thickness in the middle cingulate cortex. These structural alterations were further related to reduced anticipatory pleasure and disrupted cognitive reappraisal, which contributed to more severe depressive symptoms among healthy individuals. The above mediating effects were not replicated in our clinical group partly due to the small sample size. Preventative interventions can target emotional and reward systems to foster resilience and reduce the likelihood of future psychiatric disorders among individuals with a history of maltreatment.

The partial substitution of A-site in perovskites is a major strategy to enhance the catalytic oxidation activity. This study explores the use of silver (Ag) to partially replace the lanthanum (La) ion at the A-site in LaCoO3 perovskite, investigating the role of Ag in the ABO3 perovskite structure, elucidating the nitric oxide (NO) oxidation mechanism over La1-xAgxCoO3 (x = 0.1-0.5) perovskites. La0.7Ag0.3CoO3 with an Ag-doping amount of 0.3, exhibited the highest NO oxidation activity of 88.5% at 275 °C. Characterization results indicated that Ag substitution enhanced the perovskite, maintaining its original phase structure, existing in the form of a mixture of Ag0 and Ag+ in the La1-xAgxCoO3 (x = 0.1-0.5) perovskites. Notably, Ag substitution improved the specific surface area, reduction performance, Co3+, and surface adsorption oxygen content. Additionally, the study investigated the relationship between magnetism and NO oxidation from a magnetism perspective. Ag-doping strengthened the magnetism of La-Ag perovskite, resulting in stronger adsorption of paramagnetic NO. This study elucidated the NO oxidation mechanism over La-Ag perovskite, considering structural and magnetic properties, providing valuable insights for the subsequent development and industrial application of high oxidation ability perovskite catalysts.

This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and safety of using municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSW-IFA) in the development of geopolymer-based solidification/stabilization (S/S) treatments. Geopolymers have garnered attention as a sustainable alternative to traditional cement, owing to their high strength, stability, and minimal CO2 emissions. In this study, a combination of experimental and simulation calculations was used to investigate the setting time, mechanical properties, environmental risks, hydration mechanisms and processes of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash-based polymeric functional cementitious materials (GFCM). The results demonstrate that the mechanical properties of GFCM are related to the changes in the mineral phases and the degree of compactness. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the hydration products may be [Si(OH)4], [Al(OH)3(OH2)] and [Al(OH)4]-. It is possible that the heavy metals are embedded in the hydrated silica-aluminate by electrostatic interaction or chemisorption. Heavy metals may be embedded in hydrated silica-aluminate by electrostatic action or chemisorption. This study provides a feasible method for resource utilization and heavy metal stabilization mechanism of MSW-IFA.

G protein subunit ß1 (GNB1), the beta subunit of the G protein family, plays an important role in regulating transmembrane signal transduction. Although a recent study has demonstrated that GNB1 can bind the matrix protein 1 (M1) to facilitate M1 transport to budding sites and promote the release of progeny influenza A virus (IAV), whether the GNB1 protein has other functions in IAV replication requires further study. Here, we found that GNB1 promoted IAV replication, as virus yield decreased in GNB1 knockdown or knockout cells. GNB1 interacted with polymerase subunits PB2, PB1, and PA. Overexpressed GNB1 facilitated PB2 binding to importin α3, α5, and α7 promoting the nuclear import of PB2, enhancing viral RNA synthesis and polymerase activity. Altogether, our results demonstrated that GNB1 positively regulates virus replication by interacting with polymerase subunits and facilitating the nuclear import of PB2, which provide novel insights into the molecular mechanism of IAV. IMPORTANCE Until now, there has been only one article on the role of GNB1 in IAV budding. No study has investigated the role of GNB1 in IAV replication. In this study, our research demonstrated that GNB1 could increase the interaction between PB2 and the importin α isoform and mediate the nuclear import of PB2. Therefore, GNB1 could promote viral replication and transcription. Our results provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of viral replication and provide potential antiviral drug targets.

T-cell lymphoma (TCL) is a highly heterogeneous group of invasive non-Hodgkin lymphoma with adverse prognosis and limited treatment options. The relationship between TCL and Exportin-1 (XPO1), a major nuclear export receptor, has not been established yet. We here investigated the prognostic role and therapeutic implication of XPO1 in TCL. We analyzed XPO1 expression in a cohort of 69 TCL tumors and found that XPO1 was over-expressed in 76.8% of TCL and correlated with decreased progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). In vitro treatment of TCL cell lines with KPT-8602, the second-generation selective inhibitor of nuclear export (SINE), inhibited XPO1 expression and showed significant anti-proliferative, cell-cycle arrest and pro-apoptotic efficacy. In mechanism, KPT-8602 restored the localization of cytoplasmic FOXO3A, p27, p21, IκBα and PP2A into the nucleus, leading to AKT and NF-κB deactivation. Our data demonstrate for the first time that XPO1 could be an unfavorable prognostic factor for TCL, and provide a rationale for further investigation of the efficacy of KPT-8602 in TCL patients.

BACKGROUND: Reference intervals based on younger populations may not apply to elderly populations. The aim of the current study was to calculate reference ranges for platelet aggregation in apparently healthy Chinese elderly populations and analyze the impact of gender, age, and hematological parameters on platelet aggregation in vitro. METHODS: A total of 138 males and 161 females were enrolled based on stringent inclusion and exclusion criteria. Platelet aggregation was measured with sodium citrate anticoagulation whole blood samples using a PL12 analyzer, triggered by adenosine-5'-diphosphate (ADP) and arachidonic acid (AA) agonists. Hematological parameters were measured using a Sysmex XE2100 instrument. RESULTS: In the total sample tested in this study, the platelet aggregation induced by AA and ADP was not dependent on age (p > 0.05) but gender. Platelet aggregation triggered by ADP and AA was more enhanced in females than males (p = 0.024 for AA, p = 0.036 for ADP). The recommended reference values of AA-induced platelet aggregation were 48.42% - 85.93% for males and 43.62% - 87.80% for females. The recommended reference values of ADP-induced platelet aggregation were 38.12% - 80.21% for males and 40.12% - 83.05% for females. Furthermore, for all agonists, a positive correlation was found between platelet aggregation and platelet count. The ADP-triggered aggregation showed a significant positive correlation with white blood cell (WBC) count and a negative correlation with red blood cell (RBC) count. Moreover, platelet aggregation showed no significant correlation with mean platelet volume or hemoglobin concentration. CONCLUSIONS: Combined and gender-specific reference ranges for platelet aggregation in healthy elderly populations were established in whole blood measured by a sequential platelet counting method.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore the present situation and related factors of big 5 personality in Asian patients with facial contour surgery and to provide experience for clinical individualized medical care. METHODS: Total 235 patients with facial contour surgery were selected in this study. The Neo Five-factor Inventory was used to investigate them. RESULTS: The scores of conscientiousness and openness in the Neo Five-factor Inventory were higher than others, whereas neuroticism score was lowest in patients with facial contour surgery. The scores of extroversion and agreeableness were in the middle level. Among the big 5 personality the age, educational background, self-rated personality, the only child in a family and other cosmetic surgery history had significant differences in patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with facial contour surgery for different sex, different marital status, different body mass index, there is no significant difference in the big 5 personality through this study. However, older patients had higher score for conscientiousness, patients with higher educational background had higher scores in openness and patients with introverted personality had higher neuroticism score. The authors should take individualized personality traits during perioperative care to help the patients to establish a correct and healthy esthetic concept, as well as postoperative body image concept, to build their self-confidence and social competitiveness.

Heavy metals, the main harmful substances in the sludge, are easily enriched, have adverse effects on the treatment and disposal of the sludge. In this study, two conditioners (modified corn-core powder, MCCP, and sludge-based biochar, SBB) were separately added and jointly added into municipal sludge to enhance sludge dewaterability. Meanwhile, diverse organics, such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), were released under pretreatment. The different organics had different effects on each heavy metal fraction and changed the toxicity and bioavailability of the treated sludge. The exchangeable fraction (F4) and carbonate fraction (F5) of heavy metal were nontoxic and nonbioavailable. When MCCP/SBB was used to pretreat the sludge, the ratio of metal-F4 and -F5 decreased, indicating that MCCP/SBB reduced the biological availability and ecological toxicity of the heavy metals in the sludge. These results were consistent with the calculation of the modified potential ecological risk index (MRI). To understand the detailed function of organics in the sludge network, the relationship between EPS, the secondary structure of the protein, and heavy metals was analyzed. The analyses revealed that the increasing proportion of ß-sheet in soluble EPS (S-EPS) generated more active sites in the sludge system, which enhanced the chelate or complex function among organics and heavy metals, thus reducing the migration risks.

Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease is one of the most common heart diseases that seriously endanger human health. The study found that intracellular second messenger CAMP plays an important role in inhibiting the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle and the local inflammatory response at the damaged vessel. Phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) can specifically degrade cAMP. The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between phosphodiesterase 4D gene polymorphism and coronary heart disease and the effect of phosphodiesterase 4D gene polymorphism on cardiovascular, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method (PCR-RFLP) was used to detect 50 patients with coronary heart disease (ACS group) and 100 patients who were diagnosed with coronary artery disease by coronary angiography at the same time as the control group (NC group). The results of the study showed that the frequencies of AA, AG, and GG genotypes in 150 samples were 25.67%, 54.66%, and 22.67%, respectively, which was consistent with Hard Weber's law (X = 2.186, P = 0.101). The distribution of GG genotype (18% vs. 27%), AA + AG genotype (85% vs. 74%), G (57% vs. 55%), A (43% vs. 45 %) There was no statistically significant difference in allele frequency (P <0.05). From this, it can be seen that the rs918592 polymorphism of the PDE4D gene is not associated with coronary heart disease.

We assess and compare computer science skills among final-year computer science undergraduates (seniors) in four major economic and political powers that produce approximately half of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics graduates in the world. We find that seniors in the United States substantially outperform seniors in China, India, and Russia by 0.76-0.88 SDs and score comparably with seniors in elite institutions in these countries. Seniors in elite institutions in the United States further outperform seniors in elite institutions in China, India, and Russia by ∼0.85 SDs. The skills advantage of the United States is not because it has a large proportion of high-scoring international students. Finally, males score consistently but only moderately higher (0.16-0.41 SDs) than females within all four countries.

Knowledge of the distribution and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is essential for understanding anthropogenic impacts on natural ecosystems. The transportation of ARGs via aquatic environments is significant and has received great attention, but whether there has been anthropogenic ARG pollution to the hadal ocean ecosystem has not been well explored. For investigating ecological health concerns, we profiled the ARG occurrence in sediments of the Mariana Trench (MT) (10 890 m), the deepest region of the ocean. Metagenomic-based ARG profiles showed a sudden increase of abundance and diversity in the surface layer of MT sediments reaching 2.73 × 10-2 copy/cell and 81 subtypes, and a high percentage of ∼63.6% anthropogenic pollution sources was predicted by the Bayesian-modeling classification method. These together suggested that ARG accumulation and anthropogenic impacts have already permeated into the bottom of the deepest corner on the earth. Moreover, six ARG-carrying draft genomes were retrieved using a metagenomic binning strategy, one of which assigned as Streptococcus was identified as a potential bacterial host to contribute to the ARG accumulation in MT, carrying ermF, tetM, tetQ, cfxA2, PBP-2X, and PBP-1A. We propose that the MT ecosystem needs further long-term monitoring for the assessment of human impacts, and our identified three biomarkers (cfxA2, ermF, and mefA) could be used for the rapid monitoring of anthropogenic pollution. Together our findings imply that anthropogenic pollution has penetrated into the deepest region of the ocean and urge for better pollution control to reduce the risk of ARG dissemination to prevent the consistent accumulation and potential threat to the natural environment.

BACKGROUND: Flexible ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy is used to treat urinary tract calculi, but postoperative complications include shivering, fever and infection. To investigate the effects of irrigation fluid temperature on postoperative complications. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included 120 consecutive patients undergoing flexible ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy at the Urology Department, Suining Central Hospital, Sichuan, China between January 2017 and July 2019. Patients were randomized 1:1:1 into three groups (17 °C, 27 °C or 37 °C). Primary outcome was fever incidence (body temperature > 37.5 °C) within 48 h after surgery. Secondary outcomes included shivering incidence during recovery from anesthesia, white blood cell count (WBC), serum procalcitonin (PCT) and incidence of suspected infection (temperature > 38.5 °C and PCT > 0.5 µg/L). RESULTS: There were 108 patients, (17 °C group, n = 36; 27 °C group, n = 35; 37 °C group, n = 37), received flexible ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy and analyzed. Age, gender distribution, body mass index, ASA grade, stone burden, preoperative creatinine, preoperative core temperature and irrigation fluid volume did not differ significantly between groups. 17 °C, 27 °C and 37 °C groups exhibited significant differences in the incidences of postoperative fever (38.9% vs. 17.1% vs. 13.5%) and shivering (22.2% vs. 5.7% vs. 2.7%) (p < 0.05 for all pairwise comparisons). There was no significant difference of WBC, PCT and incidence of suspected infection in 37 °C or 27 °C group compared with 17 °C group. One case each of flash pulmonary edema and bleeding occurred in 37 °C group. CONCLUSION: Warming the irrigation fluid can reduce the incidence of postoperative fever and shivering, but further studies are needed to determine the optimal temperature. Trial registration The trial was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trials Registry and allocated as ChiCTR2000031683. The trial was registered on 07/04/2020 and this was a retrospective registration.

OBJECTIVES: N95 mask is essential for healthcare workers dealing with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, N95 mask causes discomfort breathing with marked reduction in air exchange. This study was designed to investigate whether the use of N95 mask affects rescuer's fatigue and chest compression quality during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). METHODS: After a brief review of CPR, each participant performed a 2-minute continuous chest compression on a manikin wearing N95 (N95 group, n = 40) or surgical mask (SM group, n = 40). Compression rate and depth, the proportions of correct compression rate, depth, complete chest recoil and hand position were documented. Participants' fatigue was assessed using Borg score. RESULTS: Significantly lower mean chest compression rate and depth were both achieved in the N95 group than in the SM group (p < 0.05, respectively). In addition, the proportion of correct compression rate (61 ± 19 vs. 75 ± 195, p = 0.0067), depth (67 ± 16 vs. 90 ± 14, p < 0.0001) and complete recoil (91 ± 16 vs. 98 ± 5%, p = 0.0248) were significantly decreased in the N95 group as compared to the SM group. At the end of compression, the Borg score in the N95 group was significantly higher than that in the SM group (p = 0.027). CONCLUSION: Wearing a N95 mask increases rescuer's fatigue and decreases chest compression quality during CPR. Therefore, the exchange of rescuers during CPR should be more frequent than that recommended in current guidelines when N95 masks are applied.

Heart failure is a common cardiovascular disease, which has been regarded as one of the highest health care costs with high morbidity and mortality in the western countries. Long noncoding RNAs have been widely reported to regulate the initiation or progression of cardiovascular diseases. However, the specific role of SOX2 overlapping transcript (SOX2-OT) in ischemic heart failure remains uncharacterized. The present study aimed to explore the function and mechanism of SOX2-OT in ischemic heart failure. The starBase website was used to predict potential miRNAs or target mRNAs. Western blot assay was implemented to test collagen protein levels. Functional assays were conducted to evaluate the effects of SOX2-OT on H9c2 cell viability and apoptosis. RNA pull down and luciferase reporter assays were used to confirm the combination between miR-215-5p and SOX2-OT. We found out that SOX2-OT level was increased by oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation treatment in H9c2 cells. Silencing of SOX2-OT ameliorated cell injury by promoting cell viability, inhibiting cell apoptosis and reducing productions of collagens. Mechanistically, miR-215-5p was confirmed to bind with SOX2-OT after prediction and screening. In addition, we discovered that miR-215-5p negatively regulated zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 2 (ZEB2) protein level by directly binding with ZEB2 3' untranslated region. Finally, we verified that SOX2-OT aggravated cell injury by targeting ZEB2 in H9c2 cells. In conclusion, SOX2-OT aggravated heart failure in vivo and promoted H9c2 cell injury via the miR-215-5p/ZEB2 axis in vitro, implying a novel insight into heart failure treatment.

ABSTRACT: Postoperative facial swelling after mandibular angle ostectomy is a concern for patients as it affects their quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric CO2 cryotherapy in relieving postoperative swelling. Thirty-seven patients (mean age: 22.95 ±â€Š3.49 years) who underwent bilateral mandibular angle ostectomy from April to October 2019, were included in this study. A split-mouth design was adopted and through a random sequence, either side of the face was designated as the experimental side. Both received routine nursing care, while the experimental side underwent an additional hyperbaric CO2 cryotherapy treatment. The facial structure was recorded by a 3-dimensional laser scanner pre- and postoperatively. Geomagic Studio was used for alignment, visualization, and quantification of the swelling. The largest deviation value on each side was adopted to assess the overall swelling. Parameters were compared using the paired t-test, and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. No necrosis of the skin and adjacent structures or other complications occurred in these patients. After the first day of cryotherapy, the deviation in the experimental and the control groups was (8.40 ±â€Š1.95) mm and (10.42 ±â€Š2.03) mm, respectively. The next day, after cryotherapy, the value further reduced to (5.42 ±â€Š1.36) mm and (8.24 ±â€Š2.22) mm for the experimental and control groups, respectively. And the effect remained till the seventh day. No difference was observed in terms of volume of drainage. Hyperbaric CO2 cryotherapy is safe and effective in relieving postoperative swelling and seems to be more effective than the traditional cold-pack treatment after mandibular angle ostectomy.

BACKGROUND: Celastrol (Cel) has been corroborated as an anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic agent in multiple cell damage models. However, the protective effect of Cel in high glucose (HG)-induced cardiomyocyte injury is still unclear. The present study aimed to determine whether Cel can mitigate HG-stimulated cardiomyocyte injury via regulating the miR-345-5p/growth arrest-specific 6 (Gas6) signaling pathway. METHODS: Cardiomyocytes were exposed to normal glucose (NG; 5 mmol/l) or HG (30 mmol/l) and then administered with Cel. Cell counting kit-8 and flow cytometry assays were used to detect cell proliferative activity and apoptosis. mRNA and protein expression were analyzed using a quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. A bioinformatics algorithm and a luciferase reporter gene assay were used to determine whether Gas6 is a direct target of miR-345-5p. RESULTS: The present study confirmed the inhibitory effects of Cel in HG-induced inflammation in cardiomyocytes. Moreover, Cel exhibited the ability to antagonize HG-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and suppress the elevated Bax/Bcl-2 ratio elicited by HG stimulation. Intriguingly, Cel treatment revoked the HG-triggered repression of Gas6 protein expression, and Gas6 loss-of-function accelerated HG-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis. HG-triggered up-regulation of miR-345-5p expression was depressed following Cel treatment. Importantly, we validated that Gas6 is a direct target of miR-345-5p. Transfection with miR-345-5p inhibitors restrained HG-induced release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and cell apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study demonstrate that Cel administration antagonized HG-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and inflammation through up-regulating Gas6 expression by restraining miR-345-5p.

The ubiquity of microplastics in aquatic and terrestrial environments and related ecological impacts have gained global attention. Microplastics have been detected in table salt, drinking water, and air, posing inevitable human exposure risk. However, rigorous analytical methods for detection and characterization of microplastics remain scarce. Knowledge about the potential adverse effects on human health via dietary and respiratory exposures is also limited. To address these issues, we reviewed 46 publications concerning abundances, potential sources, and analytical methods of microplastics in table salt, drinking water, and air. We also summarized probable translocation and accumulation pathways of microplastics within human body. Human body burdens of microplastics through table salt, drinking water, and inhalation were estimated to be (0-7.3)×104, (0-4.7)×103, and (0-3.0)×107 items per person per year, respectively. The intake of microplastics via inhalation, especially via indoor air, was much higher than those via other exposure routes. Moreover, microplastics in the air impose threats to both respiratory and digestive systems through breathing and ingestion. Given the lifetime inevitable exposure to microplastics, we urgently call for a better understanding of the potential hazards of microplastics to human health.

INTRODUCTION: Hematological parameters play important role in multiple diseases. This study was to investigate the possible association of the routine hematological parameters involved in immunity, inflammation, and metabolism with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in patients of Zhuang ethnicity in Guangxi, southwest China. METHODS: The medical records of 195 Zhuang SLE patients between January 2013 and November 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Random forest algorithm and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify the feature hematological parameters in patients with SLE. Association rules were explored between each parameter and immunity- (IgG, IgA, IgM, C3, and C4), inflammation- (ESR, hs-CRP, and CAR), and metabolism- (TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TP, PA, ALB, and UA) related indexes. RESULTS: Random forest algorithm and logistic regression analysis showed that neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were the feature parameters for distinguishing SLE patients from healthy controls. According to the ROC curves, the optimal cutoff values to predict SLE were 1.98 for NLR, 13.35 for RDW, and 145.64 for PLR. Association rule analysis showed that NLR was strongly associated with C3, hs-CRP, TG, ALB, and UA; RDW was strongly associated with C3, C4, hs-CRP, TG, and ALB; PLR was strongly associated with IgG, hs-CRP, HDL-C, and UA. CONCLUSIONS: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, RDW, and PLR may serve as effective predictors of dysregulation in immunity, inflammation, and metabolism. These three indicators may be potential for cardiovascular risk assessment in Zhuang SLE patients in southwest China.
