RESUMEN

The Long-read RNA-Seq Genome Annotation Assessment Project Consortium was formed to evaluate the effectiveness of long-read approaches for transcriptome analysis. Using different protocols and sequencing platforms, the consortium generated over 427 million long-read sequences from complementary DNA and direct RNA datasets, encompassing human, mouse and manatee species. Developers utilized these data to address challenges in transcript isoform detection, quantification and de novo transcript detection. The study revealed that libraries with longer, more accurate sequences produce more accurate transcripts than those with increased read depth, whereas greater read depth improved quantification accuracy. In well-annotated genomes, tools based on reference sequences demonstrated the best performance. Incorporating additional orthogonal data and replicate samples is advised when aiming to detect rare and novel transcripts or using reference-free approaches. This collaborative study offers a benchmark for current practices and provides direction for future method development in transcriptome analysis.

In health-science research, outcomes ascertained through surveys and interviews are subject to potential bias with respect to the true outcome status, which is only ascertainable with clinical and laboratory assessment. This measurement error may lead to biased inference when evaluating associations between exposures and outcomes of interest. Here, we consider a cohort study in which the outcome of interest is ascertained via questionnaire, subject to imperfect ascertainment, but where a subset of participants also have a clinically assessed, validated outcome available. This presents a methodological opportunity to address potential bias. Specifically, we constructed the likelihood in two parts, one using the validated subset and the other using a subset without validation. This work expands on that proposed by Pepe and enables inference with standard statistical software. Weighted generalized linear model estimates for our method and maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) for Pepe's method were computed, and the statistical inference was based on the standard large-sample likelihood theory. We compare the finite sample performance of two approaches through Monte Carlo simulations. This methodological work was motivated by a large cohort study of long-term childhood cancer survivors, allowing us to provide a relevant application example where we examined the association between clinical factors and chronic health conditions.

We have applied a recently developed general purpose acetonitrile force field based on first-principles calculations to simulate acetonitrile in the gas phase at different temperatures and densities. These conditions range from nearly ideal to real gas phase behavior and condensation. The molecular dynamics simulation results agree fairly well with the experimental studies available in the literature on the gas samples. The structural analysis of aggregates and their associated interaction energies is examined and related to the early model proposed on molecular association and equilibrium determining the non-ideal behavior. The formation of dimers is mainly responsible for the non-ideal behavior of the gas at very low density, confirming suggested models based on previous experimental studies. However, when the density of the sample rises, the level of aggregation increases and the simple concept of dimerization does not hold anymore. The real behavior adopted by the gas is related to the distribution of molecular structures observed. The macroscopical view of a real gas as a generic interparticle interaction system without a defined form may then be rationalized on the basis of a defined molecular association originated by a distribution of aggregates at the low density regime. The sample with the highest density (∼1.4 × 103 mol m-3) at the lowest temperature exhibits a massive aggregation where most of the acetonitrile (ACN) molecules in the simulation box form a big cluster. Its radial distribution function is similar to that of the liquid ACN. This strongly inhomogeneous distribution in the box can be considered a condensation in the gas phase under specific density-T conditions. This formation opens the door to the potential tuning of its solvent properties as a function of its size in these nanodroplets that in turn are controlled by the density-T conditions.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy, the mainstay treatment for metastatic cancer, presents serious side effects due to off-target exposure. In addition to the negative impact on patients' quality of life, side effects limit the dose that can be administered and thus the efficacy of the drug. Encapsulation of chemotherapeutic drugs in nanocarriers is a promising strategy to mitigate these issues. However, avoiding premature drug release from the nanocarriers and selectively targeting the tumour remains a challenge. RESULTS: In this study, we present a pioneering method for drug integration into nanoparticles known as mesoporous organosilica drugs (MODs), a distinctive variant of periodic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (PMOs) in which the drug is an inherent component of the silica nanoparticle structure. This groundbreaking approach involves the chemical modification of drugs to produce bis-organosilane prodrugs, which act as silica precursors for MOD synthesis. Mitoxantrone (MTO), a drug used to treat metastatic breast cancer, was selected for the development of MTO@MOD nanomedicines, which demonstrated a significant reduction in breast cancer cell viability. Several MODs with different amounts of MTO were synthesised and found to be efficient nanoplatforms for the sustained delivery of MTO after biodegradation. In addition, Fe3O4 NPs were incorporated into the MODs to generate magnetic MODs to actively target the tumour and further enhance drug efficacy. Importantly, magnetic MTO@MODs underwent a Fenton reaction, which increased cancer cell death twofold compared to non-magnetic MODs. CONCLUSIONS: A new PMO-based material, MOD nanomedicines, was synthesised using the chemotherapeutic drug MTO as a silica precursor. MTO@MOD nanomedicines demonstrated their efficacy in significantly reducing the viability of breast cancer cells. In addition, we incorporated Fe3O4 into MODs to generate magnetic MODs for active tumour targeting and enhanced drug efficacy by ROS generation. These findings pave the way for the designing of silica-based multitherapeutic nanomedicines for cancer treatment with improved drug delivery, reduced side effects and enhanced efficacy.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) secondary to lung disease (Group-3 PH) is the second leading cause of PH. The role of PH as a risk factor for primary graft dysfunction (PGD) following lung transplant (LT) is controversial. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact that the new definition of PH had on the prevalence of PH in patients with advanced lung disease-candidate for LT, and its association with the occurrence of PGD. METHOD: A retrospective study was performed in all patients undergoing cardiac catheterisation referred for consideration as candidates to LT in a centre between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2022. The baseline and haemodynamic characteristics of patients were analysed, along with the occurrence of PGD and post-transplant course in those who ultimately underwent transplantation. RESULTS: A total of 396 patients were included. Based on the new 2022 European Society of Cardiology/European Respiratory Society definitions, as many as 70.7% of patients met PH criteria. Since the introduction of the 2022 definition, a significant reduction was observed in the frequency of severe Group-3 PH (41.1% vs 10.3%; p<0.001), with respect to the 2015 definition. As many as 236 patients underwent transplantation. None of the variables associated with PH was identified as a risk factor for PGD. CONCLUSION: The new classification did not have any impact on the prevalence of PGD after transplantation. These results exclude that any significant differences exist in the baseline characteristics or post-transplant course of patients with Group-3 PH vs unclassified PH.

Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) theoretical spectra for some 3d transition metal-phthalocyanines-FePc, NiPc, CuPc, and ZnPc-are presented. Their complexity and rigidity make them a good testbed for the development of theoretical strategies that can complement the difficulties present in the experimental spectrum fitting. Classical and ab initio molecular dynamics trajectories are generated and employed as a source of structural information to compute average spectra for each MPc species. The original ZnPc force field employed in the classical molecular dynamics simulations has been modified in order to improve the agreement with the experimental EXAFS spectrum, and the modification strategy-based on MP2 optimized structures-being extended to the rest of MPcs. Both types of trajectories, classical and ab initio, provide very similar results, showing in all cases the main features present in the experimental spectra despite the different simulation timescales employed. Spectroscopical information has been analyzed on the basis of shells and legs contributions, making possible the comparison with the experimental fitting approaches. According to the simulations results, the simple relationships employed in the fitting process to define the dependence of the Debye Waller factors associated with multiple scattering paths with those of single scattering paths are reasonable. However, a lack of multiple backscattering paths contributions is found due to the intrinsic rigidity of the chemical motif (macrocycle). Its consequences in the Debye Waller factors of the fitted contributions are discussed.

Seniors face many challenges as they age, such as dementia, cognitive and memory disorders, vision and hearing impairment, among others. Although most of them would like to stay in their own homes, as they feel comfortable and safe, in some cases, older people are taken to special institutions, such as nursing homes. In order to provide serious and quality care to elderly people at home, continuous remote monitoring is perceived as a solution to keep them connected to healthcare service providers. The new trend in medical health services, in general, is to move from 'hospital-centric' services to 'home-centric' services with the aim of reducing the costs of medical treatments and improving the recovery experience of patients, among other benefits for both patients and medical centers. Smart energy data captured from electrical home appliance sensors open a new opportunity for remote healthcare monitoring, linking the patient's health-state/health-condition with routine behaviors and activities over time. It is known that deviation from the normal routine can indicate abnormal conditions such as sleep disturbance, confusion, or memory problems. This work proposes the development and deployment of a smart energy data with activity recognition (SEDAR) system that uses machine learning (ML) techniques to identify appliance usage and behavior patterns oriented to older people living alone. The proposed system opens the door to a range of applications that go beyond healthcare, such as energy management strategies, load balancing techniques, and appliance-specific optimizations. This solution impacts on the massive adoption of telehealth in third-world economies where access to smart meters is still limited.

AIMS: This study reports the foundations, strategies, and results of an institutional change experience based on the combination of participatory-action-research and new currents of collective mobilization and political participation. It aimed to achieve the institution's greater social commitment and a more participatory and transparent management. METHODS: The process took place in a Spanish public university and was promoted and coordinated by a Work Group that emerged from grassroots university community. Collective diagnosis was performed through face-to-face strategies (global, sectorial, and faculty meetings) and virtual tools (web-blog, on-line surveys, shared documents). Collective action combined nonformal with formal institutional participation and applied hybrid activism, self-organization in horizontal structures and integrative conflict management. RESULTS: A sequential process of diagnosis, collective action, and negotiation was implemented. As a result, the university Governing Team, representatives from different sectors and members of the Work Group worked jointly to define several institutional actions that were thereafter launched. Those actions aimed to improve institutional participation and transparency, and greater institutional social commitment. CONCLUSION: The combination of participatory-action-research and new ways of collective action can be an excellent tool to draw institutions towards greater social engagement, thus contributing to sustainable social change. A model to guide institutional change is drafted.

A Gram-stain-positive, moderately halophilic, aerobic, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain DP4-553-ST, was isolated from hypersaline sediment collected from the Dalangtan Playa in the Qaidam Basin, Northwest PR China. Growth occurred within 0-21.6% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 7.2%) at pH 5.5-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and at 4-45 °C (optimum 37 °C). Phylogeny based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain DP4-553-ST belonged to the genus Sediminibacillus, with high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Sediminibacillus halophilus EN8dT (99.5 %), Sediminibacillus terrae JSM 102062T (99.4 %), Virgibacillus senegalensis SK-1T (99.3 %) and Sediminibacillus albus NHBX5T (98.3 %). The G+C content of the chromosomal DNA was 43.6 mol %. The average amino acid identity, average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain DP4-553-ST and the four close type strains were 71.2-93.3, 74.0-90.5 and 20.0-41.4 %, respectively. The whole genomic analysis showed that strain DP4-553-ST constituted a different taxon separated from the recognized Sediminibacillus species. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The type strain contained cell-wall peptidoglycan based on diaminopimelic acid and possessed menaquinone-7 as the major respiratory isoprenoid quinone. The polar lipid pattern consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, four unidentified glycolipids, phosphatidylcholine, aminophospholipid, aminolipid and seven unidentified phospholipids. The combined data from phenotypic and genotypic studies demonstrated that strain DP4-553-ST represents a novel species of the genus Sediminibacillus, for which the name Sediminibacillus dalangtanensis sp. nov. is proposed, the type strain is DP4-553-ST (=MCCC 1K03838T= KCTC 43250T).

The physicochemical properties of the monovalent actinyl cations, PuO2+ and NpO2+, in water have been studied by means of classical molecular dynamic simulations. A specific set of cation-water intermolecular potentials based on ab initio potential energy surfaces has been built on the basis of the hydrated ion concept. The TIP4P water model was adopted. Given the paramagnetic character of these actinyls, the cation-water interaction energies were computed from highly correlated wave functions using the NEVPT2 method. It is shown that the multideterminantal character of the wave function has a relevant effect on the main distances of the hydrated molecular cations. Several structural, dynamical, and energetic properties of the aqueous solutions have been obtained and analyzed. Structural RDF analysis gives An-Oyl distances of 1.82 and 1.84 Å and An-O(water) distances of 2.51 and 2.53 Å for PuO2+ and NpO2+ in water, respectively. Experimental EXAFS spectra from dilute aqueous solutions of PuO2+ and NpO2+ are revisited and analyzed, assuming tetra- and pentahydration of the actinyl cations. Simulated EXAFS spectra have been computed from the snapshots of the MD simulations. Good agreement with the experimental information available is found. The global analysis leads us to conclude that both PuO2+ and NpO2+ cations in water are stable pentahydrated aqua ions.

The advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing opened new opportunities for developing various smart grid applications and services. The rapidly increasing adoption of IoT devices has enabled the development of applications and solutions to manage energy consumption efficiently. This work presents the design and implementation of a home energy management system (HEMS), which allows collecting and storing energy consumption data from appliances and the main load of the home. Two scenarios are designed and implemented: a local HEMS isolated from the Internet and relies on its processing and storage duties using an edge device and a Cloud HEMS using AWS IoT Core to manage incoming data messages and provide data-driven services and applications. A testbed was carried out in a real house in the city of Valparaiso, Chile, over a one-year period, where four appliances were used to collect energy consumption using smart plugs, as well as collecting the main energy load of the house through a data logger acting as a smart meter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first electrical energy dataset with a 10-second sampling rate from a real household in Valparaiso, Chile. Results show that both implementations perform the baseline tasks (collecting, storing, and controlling) for a HEMS. This work contributes by providing a detailed technical implementation of HEMS that enables researchers and engineers to develop and implement HEMS solutions to support different smart home applications.

Salar de Uyuni (SdU) is the biggest athalosaline environment on Earth, holding a high percentage of the known world Li reserves. Due to its hypersalinity, temperature and humidity fluctuations, high exposure to UV radiation, and its elevated concentration of chaotropic agents like MgCl2 , LiCl and NaBr, SdU is considered a polyextreme environment. Here, we report the prokaryotic abundance and diversity of 46 samples obtained in different seasons and geographical areas. The identified bacterial community was found to be more heterogeneous than the archaeal community, with both communities varying geographically. A seasonal difference has been detected for archaea. Salinibacter, Halonotius and Halorubrum were the most abundant genera in Salar de Uyuni. Different unclassified archaea were also detected. In addition, the diversity of two subsurface samples obtained at 20 and 80 m depth was evaluated and compared with the surface data, generating an evolutionary record of a multilayer hypersaline ecosystem.

The physicochemical properties of the three heaviest alkaline-earth cations, Sr2+, Ba2+, and Ra2+ in water have been studied by means of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A specific set of cation-water intermolecular potentials based on ab initio potential energy surfaces has been built on the basis of the hydrated ion concept. The polarizable and flexible model of water MCDHO2 was adopted. The theoretical-experimental comparison of structural, dynamical, energetic, and spectroscopical properties of Sr2+ and Ba2+ aqueous solutions is satisfactory, which supports the methodology developed. This good behavior allows a reasonable reliability for the predicted Ra2+ physicochemical data not experimentally determined yet. Simulated extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy spectra have been computed from the snapshots of the MD simulations and compared with the experimental information available for Sr2+ and Ba2+. For the Ra2+ case, the Ra L3-edge EXAFS spectrum is proposed. Structural and dynamical properties of the aqua ions for the three cations have been obtained and analyzed. Along the [M(H2O)n]m+ series, the M-O distance for the first-hydration shell is 2.57, 2.81, and 2.93 Å for Sr2+, Ba2+, and Ra2+, respectively. The hydration number also increases when one is going down along the group: 8.1, 9.4, and 9.8 for Sr2+, Ba2+, and Ra2+, respectively. Whereas [Sr(H2O)8]2+ is a typical aqua ion with a well-defined structure, the Ba2+ and Ra2+ hydration provides a picture exhibiting an average between the ennea- and the deca-hydration. These results show a similar chemical behavior of Ba2+ and Ra2+ aqueous solutions and support experimental studies on the removal of Ra-226 of aquifers by different techniques, where Ra2+ is replaced by Ba2+. A comparison of the heavy alkaline ions, Rb+ and Cs+, with the heavy alkaline-earth ions is made.

Plexiform fibromyxoma (PF) is an uncommon primary tumor of the gastrointestinal tract, with a mesenchymal origin and a benign behavior. Herein, we report a case and provide a literature review. A 41-year-old male patient underwent surgery in our unit for a PF at the gastric antrum, after being admitted due to vomiting and weight loss. As illustrated by our case, the mean age at presentation is around 40 years, the antrum is the most common location and abdominal pain the most widely reported manifestation. None of the reviewed cases involved regional or distant spread.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is the recommended treatment for patients at early stages of hepatocarcinoma (HCC) with portal hypertension and/or increased bilirubinemia, but without vascular-associated diseases. Tumor recurrence, which is the main drawback for the survival of patients submitted to OLT for HCC, has been related to tumor-related variables and the immunosuppressive therapies. We have previously shown that Tacrolimus (FK506) exerts a more potent pro-apoptotic and anti-proliferative effects than the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors (Sirolimus and Everolimus) in liver cancer cells. This study identified the role of the immunosuppressant partners such as FK506-binding proteins (FKBPs) in the induction of cell death and arrest of cell proliferation by immunosuppressants in two representative liver cancer cells. METHODS: The regulation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, apoptosis/autophagy, cell proliferation, and FKBPs expression was determined in Tacrolimus-, Sirolimus- and Everolimus-treated primary human hepatocytes, and hepatoma HepG2 and Huh7 cell lines. The functional repercussion of FKBPs on cell death and proliferation was also addressed using the siRNA technology. The assessed antitumoral properties of the immunosuppressants were associated to microRNAs (miRNAs) pattern. RESULTS: The enhanced pro-apoptotic and anti-proliferative properties of Tacrolimus versus mTOR inhibitors were associated with increased protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK)-related ER stress, Ser15P-p53/p53 ratio and p21 protein expression that may counterbalance the risk of proliferative upregulation caused by enhanced Thr172P-Cdk4/Cdk4 activation in liver cancer cells. The inhibition of the mTOR pathway by Sirolimus and Everolimus was related to an induction of autophagy; and at a high dose, these drugs impaired translation likely at a very early step of the elongation phase. Tacrolimus and mTOR inhibitors increased the protein expression of FKBP12 and FKBP51 that appeared to play pro-survival role. Interestingly, the administration of immunosuppressants yields a specific pattern of miRNAs. Tacrolimus and mTOR inhibitors decreased miR-92a-1-5p, miR-197-3p, miR-483-3p and miR-720, and increased miR-22-3p, miR-376a-3p, miR-663b, miR-886-5p, miR-1300 and miR-1303 expressions in HepG2 cells. CONCLUSION: The more potent pro-apoptotic and anti-proliferative properties of Tacrolimus versus mTOR inhibitors were associated with an increased activation of PERK and p53 signaling, and p21 protein expression. FKBP12 and FKBP51 appeared to be the most relevant partners of Tacrolimus and mTOR inhibitors exerting a pro-survival effect in HepG2 cells. The observed effects of immunosuppressants were related to a specific miRNA signature in liver cancer cells.

OBJECTIVES: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a leading cause of mortality in patients with connective tissue diseases (CTD). Lung transplantation has become a viable option for patients with end-stage CTD-ILD. However, patients with CTD are often considered suboptimal candidates for lung transplantation because of concerns of worse outcomes. We assessed post-transplant survival of patients with CTD-ILD compared to patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). METHODS: Medical records of patients who underwent lung transplantation for CTD-ILD at a single referral centre for lung transplantation in Northern Spain between 1998 and 2018 were reviewed. This cohort was compared with patients with IPF (group-matched for age ±3.3 years, transplant year and use of basiliximab induction previous to transplant). Cumulative survival rates after transplantation were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared between groups using the log-rank test. RESULTS: We studied 26 patients with CTD-ILD and 26 patients with IPF. The underlying diseases of CTD-ILD patients were rheumatoid arthritis (n=9), scleroderma (n=6), Sjögren's syndrome (n=4), ANCA-associated vasculitis (n=3), anti-synthetase syndrome (n=2), and dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus (1 each). Baseline characteristics were similar in both groups. CTD-ILD patients experienced acute graft rejection less commonly than those with IPF (32.0% vs. 62.5%; p=0.032). However, a non-statistically significant increased frequency of chronic graft rejection was observed in CTD-ILD patients (20.0% vs. 8.3%; p=0.417). In this regard, the 5-year cumulative survival rates after transplantation was reduced in CTD-ILD (42.4% vs. 65.8%) but the difference did not achieve statistical significance (p=0.075). CONCLUSIONS: Long-term post-transplant survival in Northern Spanish patients with CTD-ILD is reduced compared with IPF.

An in situ preparation of metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) on the surface of an organic polymer is reported. The hybrid material was evaluated as sorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The growth of HKUST-1 on MAA-based polymer was accomplished using a layer-by-layer assembly strategy. The HKUST-1-polymer was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to demonstrate the incorporation of MOF crystals onto the polymer surface. The MOF (nano)crystals were characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and high-angle annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The water-stable MOF-polymer was evaluated as SPE sorbent, and several variables that can influence the extraction recoveries of PAH derivatives were investigated. Under the selected conditions, the detection limits varied between 4 and 21 ng·L-1, and the precision (relative standard deviation) was below 12%. The recovery values for spiked solutions ranged from 95 to 104%, and the enrichment factor achieved was close to 1000-fold using a high sample volume (100 mL) and very low desorption volume (100 µL). The SPE enrichment combined with HPLC and DAD detector was successfully applied to the extraction and determination of polycyclic hydrocarbons in environmental water samples. The current paper evaluates psychiatric needs of voluntary admissions in a large urban psychiatric hospital through a retrospective chart review, as this research is limited within the United States. A total of 581 voluntary adult psychiatric admission charts were reviewed. Continuous variables were evaluated using an ANOVA while associations between variables were examined by an unadjusted Pearson correlation coefficient a stepwise linear regression analysis. Men were significantly more likely to have a past admission for psychiatric services (p = .016), suicidal ideation (p < .001) and test positive for substances (p < .001) than women, and were more likely to be unemployed, homeless and without insurance. Women were more likely to have a past suicide attempt and a depressive disorder. A significant relationship between gender and rationale for seeking voluntary admission (p < .001) was found. This study offers understanding of male and female voluntary admissions, and a foundation for improving treatment interventions to reduce recurrent readmissions.

EXAFS spectroscopy is one of the most used techniques to solve the structure of actinoid solutions. In this work a systematic analysis of the EXAFS spectra of four actinyl cations, [UO2]2+, [NpO2]2+, [NpO2]+ and [PuO2]2+ has been carried out by comparing experimental results with theoretical spectra. These were obtained by averaging individual contributions from snapshots taken from classical Molecular Dynamics simulations which employed a recently developed [AnO2]2+/+ -H2O force field based on the hydrated ion model using a quantum-mechanical (B3LYP) potential energy surface. Analysis of the complex EXAFS signal shows that both An-Oyl and An-OW single scattering paths as well as multiple scattering ones involving [AnO2]+/2+ molecular cation and first-shell water molecules are mixed up all together to produce a very complex signal. Simulated EXAFS from the B3LYP force field are in reasonable agreement for some of the cases studied, although the k= 6-8 Å-1 region is hard to be reproduced theoretically. Except uranyl, all studied actinyls are open-shell electron configurations, therefore it has been investigated how simulated EXAFS spectra are affected by minute changes of An-O bond distances produced by the inclusion of static and dynamic electron correlation in the quantum mechanical calculations. A [NpO2]+-H2O force field based on a NEVPT2 potential energy surface has been developed. The small structural changes incorporated by the electron correlation on the actinyl aqua ion geometry, typically smaller than 0.07 Å, leads to improve the simulated spectrum with respect to that obtained from the B3LYP force field. For the other open-shell actinyls, [NpO2]2+ and [PuO2]2+, a simplified strategy has been adopted to improve the simulated EXAFS spectrum. It is computed taking as reference structure the NEVPT2 optimized geometry and including the DW factors of their corresponding MD simulations employing the B3LYP force field. A better agreement between the experimental and the simulated EXAFS spectra is found, confirming the a priori guess that the inclusion of dynamic and static correlation refine the structural description of the open-shell actinyl aqua ions.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood obesity is a public health challenge. Between 1999 and 2012, the prevalence in Mexico of overweight and obesity in schoolchildren went from 25.5 to 32 %. OBJECTIVE: To report current prevalence of overweight and obesity in schoolchildren from the municipality of Durango, Mexico. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey conducted between January 2017 and December 2018. A total of 24,600 children aged between six and 11 years from 138 schools of the municipality of Durango were included. The body mass index reference values established by the World Health Organization were used to determine the presence of overweight and obesity. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight was 19.7 %, of obesity, 16 %, and of overweight and obesity combined, 35.7 %. In the six-year-old group, a prevalence of overweight-obesity of 25.4 % was found, and in the 11-year-old group, 41.1 %. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of overweight-obesity in children aged from 6 to 11 years in the municipality of Durango is higher than those reported in the national survey by states in 2012 and in the 2016 national survey; a trend towards an increase with age was observed.


INTRODUCCIÓN: La obesidad infantil es un reto de salud pública. Entre 1999 y 2012, en México la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad (SO) en niños escolares pasó de 25.5 a 32 %. OBJETIVO: Reportar la prevalencia actual de SO en niños escolares del municipio de Durango, México. MÉTODO: Encuesta transversal realizada entre enero de 2017 y diciembre de 2018. Se incluyeron 24 600 niños de seis a 11 años, de 138 escuelas del municipio de Durango. Se utilizaron los valores de referencia del índice de masa corporal establecidos por la Organización Mundial de la Salud para determinar la presencia de SO. RESULTADOS: La prevalencia de sobrepeso fue de 19.7 %, la de obesidad de 16 % y la de SO de 35.7 %. En el grupo de seis años se encontró una prevalencia de SO de 25.4 % y en el de 11 años, de 41.1 %. CONCLUSIONES: La prevalencia de SO en niños de seis a 11 años del municipio de Durango es más elevada que la reportada en la encuesta nacional por entidad federativa en 2012 y la nacional en 2016; se observó tendencia al incremento en la prevalencia conforme aumenta la edad.
