RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Achieving integration in medical curricula without redundancy in basic medical sciences disciplines is a substantial challenge. Introducing co-teaching in such curricula with active inter-disciplinary participation is believed to best utilize the teaching and learning time for instructors and students, to motivate the students, and to provide a more robust base for bridging the gap between basic and clinical medical sciences in medical schools. Additionally, including more than one student-centered activity in one session is expected to increase the students' involvement and improve the retention of knowledge. Our study aims at minimizing redundancy and improving the students' motivation in learning the topic "insulin-glucose regulation" during the Endocrine and Metabolism module taught to year three students at Galala University, Faculty of Medicine in Egypt. METHODS: The authors designed a 3-hr co-teaching integrated session with 3 basic medical sciences aimed to explain the clinical terms including online accessed pre/post-tests, small student groups-created pre/post-session MCQ, with co-sharing of students in the introduction of scientific materials. RESULTS: The students' scores in the post-test showed that they gained more knowledge compared to before. Interestingly, there was only an improvement in the students' performance in generating questions before and after the session, as well as in the integrated question in the end-of-semester exam, we suggest implementing this approach in other topics and modules in medical schools. It would also be favorable to follow up with the students taught using this approach and those taught differently to assess the effectiveness of this approach in a controlled manner. CONCLUSION: Integrated sessions effectively increase student awareness of medical concepts and reduce redundancy in basic medical sciences. This approach exposes students to a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter, improving their comprehension and retention. It is a valuable method for educators and instructors seeking to enhance their students' learning experience in the field of medical sciences.

BACKGROUND: Radiologists need to learn more about the management of their emotions and their impact on individual well-being as well as proper communication within the radiology realm. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the relationship between joining social events organized by the radiology department of Al-Ahrar Teaching Hospital and the emotional intelligence of radiologists. METHODS: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted on 82 radiologists at the Radiology Department of Al-Ahrar Teaching Hospital, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. This was preceded by a pilot study among radiologists, and modification of the questionnaire items to be more precise. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: it assessed sociodemographic, personnel, and workplace characteristics of the participants; social events' related factors, and emotional intelligence of radiologists. RESULTS: 52.4% of radiologists had moderate emotional intelligence scores, and 24.4% had high emotional intelligence scores. High emotional intelligence scores were significantly associated and positively correlated with the increased participants' years of work experience and frequency of attending social events, and the overall impression of the events. The radiologists' overall impression of the social events was the only significant independent predictor of a high emotional intelligence score. CONCLUSION: The majority of the participants in this study had moderate to high emotional intelligence scores. The social events that were organized by the radiology department succeeded in crossing-over the gaps in communication and workflow knowledge that take place due to significant personnel turnover and should be considered for improving team preparedness and communication in similar workplaces.

OBJECTIVES: The present study is considered the first study that aims to estimate the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and to predict the pattern of spread among Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in comparison to Iran and Pakistan. METHODS: Data during the period from January 29, 2020, till April 14, 2020, were extracted from 76 WHO situational reports and from the Worldometer website. Numbers of populations in each country were considered during data analysis. Susceptible, infectious, recovered, and deaths (SIRD) model and smoothing spline regression model were used to predict the number of cases in each country. RESULTS: SIRD model in KSA yielded ß = 2e-0.6, γ = 0.006, and µ = 0.00038 and R0= 0.00029. It is expected that by the 1st of May 2020, that number of cumulative infected cases would rise to 16848 in KSA and to 11,825 in Pakistan while in Iran, it is expected that the number mostly will be 100485. Moreover, the basic reproduction number R0 is expected to decrease by time progression. CONCLUSION: The cumulative infected cases are expected to grow exponentially. Although R0 is expected to be decreased, the quarantine measures should be maintained or even enhanced.
