Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in applications ranging from electric vehicles to wearable devices. Before the invention of secondary LIBs, the primary lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) battery was developed in the 1970s using SOCl2 as the catholyte, lithium metal as the anode and amorphous carbon as the cathode1-7. This battery discharges by lithium oxidation and catholyte reduction to sulfur, sulfur dioxide and lithium chloride, is well known for its high energy density and is widely used in real-world applications; however, it has not been made rechargeable since its invention8-13. Here we show that with a highly microporous carbon positive electrode, a starting electrolyte composed of aluminium chloride in SOCl2 with fluoride-based additives, and either sodium or lithium as the negative electrode, we can produce a rechargeable Na/Cl2 or Li/Cl2 battery operating via redox between mainly Cl2/Cl- in the micropores of carbon and Na/Na+ or Li/Li+ redox on the sodium or lithium metal. The reversible Cl2/NaCl or Cl2/LiCl redox in the microporous carbon affords rechargeability at the positive electrode side and the thin alkali-fluoride-doped alkali-chloride solid electrolyte interface stabilizes the negative electrode, both are critical to secondary alkali-metal/Cl2 batteries.

This study aims to develop a prognostic signature based on m6A-related lncRNAs for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Differential expression analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were used to identify m6A-related lncRNAs associated with patient outcomes in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Our approach led to the development of an m6A-related lncRNA risk score (MRLrisk), formulated using six identified lncRNAs: NFE4, AL008729.2, AL139123.1, LINC02154, AC124854.1 and ARHGAP31-AS1. Higher MRLrisk was identified as a risk factor for patients' prognosis in ccRCC. Furthermore, an MRLrisk-based nomogram was developed and demonstrated as a reliable tool for prognosis prediction in ccRCC. Enrichment analysis and tumor mutation signature studies were conducted to investigate MRLrisk-related biological phenotypes. The tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE) score was employed to infer patients' response to immunotherapy, indicating a negative correlation between high MRLrisk and immunotherapy response. Our focus then shifted to LINC02154 for deeper exploration. We assessed LINC02154 expression in 28 ccRCC/normal tissue pairs and 3 ccRCC cell lines through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Functional experiments, including EdU incorporation, flow cytometry and transwell assays, were performed to assess the role of LINC02154 in ccRCC cell functions, discovering that its downregulation hinders cancer cell proliferation and migration. Furthermore, the influence of LINC02154 on ccRCC cells' sensitivity to Sunitinib was explored using CCK-8 assays, demonstrating that decreased LINC02154 expression increases Sunitinib sensitivity. In summary, this study successfully developed an MRLrisk model with significant prognostic value for ccRCC and established LINC02154 as a critical biomarker and prospective therapeutic target in ccRCC management.

BACKGROUND: To prevent school injuries, thorough epidemiological data is an essential foundation. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of school injuries in Asia and explore risk factors for major trauma. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in the participating centers of the Pan-Asian Trauma Outcome Study from October 2015 to December 2020. Subjects who reported "school" as the site of injury were included. Major trauma was defined as an Injury Severity Score (ISS) value of ≥16. RESULTS: In total, 1305 injury cases (1.0% of 127,715 events) occurred at schools. Among these, 68.2% were children. Unintentional injuries were the leading cause and intentional injuries comprised 7.5% of the cohort. Major trauma accounted for 7.1% of those with documented ISS values. Multivariable regression revealed associations between major trauma and factors, including age, intention of injury (self-harm), type of injury (traffic injuries, falls), and body part injured (head, thorax, and abdomen). Twenty-two (1.7%) died, with six deaths related to self-harm. Females represented 28.4% of injuries but accounted for 40.9% of all deaths. CONCLUSIONS: In Asia, injuries at schools affect a significant number of children. Although the incidence of injuries was higher in males, self-inflicted injuries and mortality cases were relatively higher in females. IMPACT: Epidemiological data and risk factors for major trauma resulting from school injuries in Asia are lacking. This study identified significant risk factors for major trauma occurring at schools, including age, intention of injury (self-harm), injury type (traffic injuries, falls), and body part injured (head, thoracic, and abdominal injuries). Although the incidence of injuries was higher in males, the incidence of self-harm injuries and mortality rates were higher in females. The results of this would make a significant contribution to the development of prevention strategies and relative policies concerning school injuries.

INTRODUCTION: To present the surgical technique and clinical outcomes of modified ileal conduit for pelvic lipomatosis (PL). METHODS: From 2020 to 2022, we prospectively enrolled 9 patients with PL undergoing modified ileal conduit. The patient characteristics, perioperative variables, and follow-up outcomes as well as the description of surgical technique were reported. RESULTS: All 9 patients successfully completed the operation. Two patients had perioperative complications of Clavien-Dindo grade I. The mean operation time and bleeding volumes were 253±51.4 min and 238.9±196.9 ml, with a mean postoperative follow-up time of 13.0±5.6 months. The postoperative 3-month and 1-year creatinine values were significantly decreased versus the preoperative (P=0.006 and P=0.024). The postoperative 3-month and 1-year eGFR values were significantly increased comapred with those before operation (P=0.0002 and P=0.018). The separation value of left renal pelvis collection system after operation were significantly reduced compared with preoperative evaluation (P=0.023 at 3 month and P=0.042 at 1 year) and so was the right side (P=0.019 and P=0.023). CONCLUSION: Modified ileal conduit is safe and feasible for PL. A large sample cohort with long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of PL.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate objective treatment efficacy and safety, and subjective patient-reported outcomes in patients with complex ureteral strictures (US) undergoing minimally invasive lingual mucosal graft ureteroplasty (LMGU). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients underwent robotic or laparoscopic LMGU between May 2020 and July 2022. Clinical success was defined as symptom-free and no radiographic evidence of re-obstruction. Patient-reported outcomes, including health-related quality of life (HRQoL), mental health status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), were longitudinally evaluated before surgery, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Overall, 41 consecutive patients were included. All procedures were performed successfully with 32 patients in robotic approach and 9 in laparoscopic. Forty (97.56%) patients achieved clinical success during the median follow-up of 29 (range 15-41) months. Although patients with complex US experienced poor baseline HRQoL, there was a remarkable improvement following LMGU. Specifically, the 6-month and 12-month postoperative scores were significantly improved compared to the baseline (p < 0.05) in most domains. Twenty-eight (68.3%) and 31 (75.6%) patients had anxiety and depression symptoms before surgery, respectively. However, no significant decrease in the incidence of these symptoms was observed postoperatively. Moreover, there was no significant deterioration of OHRQoL at 6 months and 12 months postoperatively when compared to the baseline. CONCLUSIONS: LMGU is a safe and efficient procedure for complex ureteral reconstruction that significantly improves patient-reported HRQoL without compromising OHRQoL. Assessing patients' quality of life enables us to monitor postoperative recovery and progress, which should be considered as one of the criteria for surgical success.

PURPOSE: To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL), anxiety and depression levels in patients with ureteral stricture (US) and to further investigate factors independently affecting this. METHODS: We prospectively recruited a cohort of 275 consecutive patients with US between June 2020 and April 2021. The participants were required to provide complete sociodemographic, clinical and pathologic information. All patients were administered questionnaires to evaluate HRQoL, anxiety and depression. Multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to assess the contribution of covariates on HRQoL, anxiety and depression. RESULTS: Patients with US, particularly iatrogenic US, scored significantly lower than the Chinese general population in all domains of the SF-36 (all p < 0.001), except SF. Increased age, female and high education attainment were independently associated with poor HRQoL. Interestingly, iatrogenic US, nephrostomy tube placement, urinary symptoms, high anxiety and depression level independently predicted poor HRQoL. Furthermore, the percentages of anxiety and depression cases in patients with US were 31.3% and 20.7%, respectively. Iatrogenic US and urinary symptoms, specifically waist discomfort, were the strongest predictors of increased levels of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSION: Patients with US exhibited poor quality of life and emotional status. Various factors independently predicted worse HRQoL and emotion, which provide potential targets for medical, lifestyle-related, psychological interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital lymphatic anomalies (LAs) arise due to defects in lymphatic development and often present in utero as pleural effusion, chylothorax, nuchal and soft tissue edema, ascites, or hydrops. Many LAs are caused by single nucleotide variants, which are not detected on routine prenatal testing. METHODS: Demographic data were compared between two subcohorts, those with clinically significant fetal edema (CSFE) and isolated fetal edema. A targeted variant analysis of LA genes was performed using American College of Medical Genetics criteria on whole exome sequencing (WES) data generated for 71 fetal edema cases who remained undiagnosed after standard workup. RESULTS: CSFE cases had poor outcomes, including preterm delivery, demise, and maternal preeclampsia. Pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants were identified in 7% (5/71) of cases, including variants in RASopathy genes, RASA1, SOS1, PTPN11, and a novel PIEZO1 variant. Variants of uncertain significance (VOUS) were identified in 45% (32/71) of cases. In CSFEs, VOUS were found in CELSR1, EPHB4, TIE1, PIEZO1, ITGA9, RASopathy genes, SOS1, SOS2, and RAF1. CONCLUSIONS: WES identified pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants and VOUS in LA genes in 51% of fetal edema cases, supporting WES and expanded hydrops panels in cases of idiopathic fetal hydrops and fluid collections.

OBJECTIVE: Injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children. However, the epidemiology and prehospital care for pediatric unintentional injuries in Asia are still unclear. METHODS: A total of 9,737 pediatric patients aged <18 years with unintentional injuries cared for at participating centers of the Pan-Asian Trauma Outcome Study (PATOS) from October 2015 to December 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups: those <8 and those ≥8 years of age. Variables such as patient demographics, injury epidemiology, Injury Severity Score (ISS), and prehospital care were collected. Injury severity and administered prehospital care stratified by gross national income were also analyzed. RESULTS: Pediatric unintentional injuries accounted for 9.4% of EMS-transported trauma cases in the participating Asian centers, and the mortality rate was 0.88%. The leading cause of injury was traffic injuries in older children aged ≥8 years (56.5%), while falls at home were common among young children aged <8 years (43.9%). Compared with younger children, older children with similar ISS tended to receive more prehospital interventions. Uneven disease severity was found in that older children in lower-middle and upper-middle-income countries had higher ISS compared with those in high-income countries. The performance of prehospital interventions also differed among countries with different gross national incomes. Immobilizations were the most performed prehospital intervention followed by oxygen administration, airway management, and pain control; only one patient received prehospital thoracentesis. Procedures were performed more frequently in high-income countries than in upper-middle-income and lower-middle-income countries. CONCLUSIONS: The major cause of injury was road traffic injuries in older children, while falls at home were common among young children. Prehospital care in pediatric unintentional injuries in Asian countries was not standardized and might be insufficient, and the economic status of countries may affect the implementation of prehospital care.

Circular RNA (circ)_0000326 has been reported in bladder cancer and cervical cancer and is concerned to be involved with the development of cancerous cells. Whereas, there have been no reports concentrating on the influences of circ_0000326 in breast cancer (BC). Therefore, the latent modulatory mechanisms of circ_0000326 in BC are researched. circ_0000326 expression in BC tissues and correlative cells was evaluated via RT-qPCR, and the relevance between circ_0000326 expression and overall survival and the clinicopathological feature was also investigated. After a series of transfection, the effects of circ_0000326, microRNA-9-3p (miR-9-3p), and Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) in BC cell growth, invasion, and stemness were studied by CCK-8, flow cytometry, Transwell, and sphere-forming assays. The binding sites and correlation of circ_0000326, miR-9-3p, and YAP1 were certified via starBase website, luciferase reporter assay, and Pearson's χ2 test. The in vivo experiment was evaluated by establishing a subcutaneous tumorigenesis model. High-expressed circ_0000326 in BC tissues and cells was discovered, which was connected with an undesirable prognosis. Silencing of circ_0000326 visibly inhibited MCF-7 and BT549 cell growth, invasion, stemness, meanwhile declining the protein levels of SRY-related high-mobility group box gene 2 (SOX2) and octamer binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4). miR-9-3p was a sponger of circ_0000326, which was negatively regulated by circ_0000326. Moreover, YAP1 was confirmed as a target gene of miR-9-3p. circ_0000326 affected BC cell behaviors via mediating miR-9-3p and YAP1. Furthermore, circ_0000326 silencing prohibited tumor growth of BC in vivo. The research uncovered that circ_0000326 facilitated BC development via mediating the miR-9-3p/YAP1 axis.

PURPOSE: Horseshoe kidney (HSK) is the most common renal fusion anomaly, occurring in 0.25% of the population (1). It presents technical obstacles to pyeloplasty for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) despite robotic assistance (2, 3). KangDuo-Surgical-Robot-01 (KD-SR-01), an emerging robotic platform in China, has yielded satisfactory outcomes in pyeloplasty (4, 5). We first describe our modified technique of robotic bilateral pyeloplasty for UPJO in HSK using KD-SR-01 system in the Lithotomy Trendelenburg position. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 36-year-old man with HSK and bilateral UPJO suffered right flank pain due to renal calculi (Figure-1). Repeated double-J stent insertion and ureteroscopy lithotripsy did not relieve his symptoms. A robot-assisted modified bilateral dismembered V-shaped flap pyeloplasty was performed using KD-SR-01 system in the Lithotomy Trendelenburg position. RESULTS: Total operative time was 298 minutes with 50 ml estimated blood loss. There was no conversion to laparoscopic or open surgery. A follow-up of 14 months showed relieving symptoms and stable renal function. Cine magnetic resonance urography and computed tomography urography revealed improved hydronephrosis and good drainage. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. CONCLUSIONS: It is technically feasible to perform a KD-SR-01-assisted modified bilateral dismembered V-shaped flap pyeloplasty in the Lithotomy Trendelenburg position for HSK. This procedure achieves managing UPJO on both sides without redocking the system and provides a wider operative field. In addition, it may be associated with better ergonomics, better cosmetic outcomes, and less possibility of postoperative bowel adhesion. However, further investigation is still warranted to confirm its safety, efficacy, and advantages over traditional procedures.

Computed tomography (CT) techniques are well known for their ability to produce high-quality images needed for medical diagnostic purposes. Unfortunately, standard CT machines are extremely large, heavy, require careful and regular calibration, and are expensive, which can limit their availability in point-of-care situations. An alternative approach is to use portable machines, but parameters related to the geometry of these devices (e.g., distance between source and detector, orientation of source to detector) cannot always be precisely calibrated, and these parameters may change slightly when the machine is adjusted during the image acquisition process. In this work, we describe the non-linear inverse problem that models this situation, and discuss algorithms that can jointly estimate the geometry parameters and compute a reconstructed image. In particular, we propose a hybrid machine learning and block coordinate descent (ML-BCD) approach that uses an ML model to calibrate geometry parameters, and uses BCD to refine the predicted parameters and reconstruct the imaged object simultaneously. We show using numerical experiments that our new method can efficiently improve the accuracy of both the image and geometry parameters.

Developing new types of high-capacity and high-energy density rechargeable batteries is important to future generations of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and mass energy storage applications. Recently, we reported ∼3.5 V sodium/chlorine (Na/Cl2) and lithium/chlorine (Li/Cl2) batteries with up to 1200 mAh g-1 reversible capacity, using either a Na or a Li metal as the negative electrode, an amorphous carbon nanosphere (aCNS) as the positive electrode, and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) dissolved in thionyl chloride (SOCl2) with fluoride-based additives as the electrolyte [Zhu et al., Nature, 2021, 596 (7873), 525-530]. The high surface area and large pore volume of aCNS in the positive electrode facilitated NaCl or LiCl deposition and trapping of Cl2 for reversible NaCl/Cl2 or LiCl/Cl2 redox reactions and battery discharge/charge cycling. Here, we report an initially low surface area/porosity graphite (DGr) material as the positive electrode in a Li/Cl2 battery, attaining high battery performance after activation in carbon dioxide (CO2) at 1000 °C (DGr_ac) with the first discharge capacity ∼1910 mAh g-1 and a cycling capacity up to 1200 mAh g-1. Ex situ Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the evolution of graphite over battery cycling, including intercalation/deintercalation and exfoliation that generated sufficient pores for hosting LiCl/Cl2 redox. This work opens up widely available, low-cost graphitic materials for high-capacity alkali metal/Cl2 batteries. Lastly, we employed mass spectrometry to probe the Cl2 trapped in the graphitic positive electrode, shedding light into the Li/Cl2 battery operation.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is currently an incurable cancer. Genome-wide association studies have demonstrated that 41 genetic variants are associated with glioblastoma and may provide an option for drug development. METHODS: We investigated FDA-approved antipsychotics for their potential treatment of glioblastoma based on genome-wide association studies data using a 'pathway/gene-set analysis' approach. RESULTS: The in-silico screening led to the discovery of 12 candidate drugs. DepMap portal revealed that 42 glioma cell lines show higher sensitivities to 12 candidate drugs than to Temozolomide, the current standard treatment for glioblastoma. CONCLUSION: In particular, cell lines showed significantly higher sensitivities to Norcyclobenzaprine and Protriptyline which were predicted to bind targets to disrupt a certain molecular function such as DNA repair, response to hormones, or DNA-templated transcription, and may lead to an effect on survival-related pathways including cell cycle arrest, response to ER stress, glucose transport, and regulation of autophagy. However, it is recommended that their mechanism of action and efficacy are further determined.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Increasing evidence has linked ambient fine particulate matter (ie, particulate matter no larger than 2.5 µm [PM2.5]) to chronic kidney disease (CKD), but their association has not been fully elucidated, especially in regions with high levels of PM2.5 pollution. This study aimed to investigate the long-term association of high PM2.5 exposure with incident CKD in mainland China. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 72,425 participants (age ≥18 years) without CKD were recruited from 121 counties in Hunan Province, China. EXPOSURE: Annual mean PM2.5 concentration at the residence of each participant derived from a long-term, full-coverage, high-resolution (1 × 1 km2), high-quality dataset of ground-level air pollutants in China. OUTCOMES: Incident CKD during the interval between the baseline examination of each participant (2005-2017) and the end of follow-up through 2018. ANALYTICAL APPROACH: Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the independent association of PM2.5 with incident CKD and the joint association of PM2.5 with temperature or humidity on the development of PM2.5-related CKD. Restricted cubic splines were used to model exposure-response relationships. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 3.79 (IQR, 2.03-5.48) years, a total of 2,188 participants with incident CKD were identified. PM2.5 exposure was associated with incident CKD with an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.71 (95% CI, 1.58-1.85) per 10-µg/m3 greater long-term exposure. Multiplicative interactions between PM2.5 and humidity or temperature on incident CKD were detected (all P < 0.001 for interaction), whereas an additive interaction was detected only for humidity (relative risk due to interaction, 3.59 [95% CI, 0.97-6.21]). LIMITATIONS: Lack of information on participants' activity patterns such as time spent outdoors. CONCLUSIONS: Greater long-term ambient PM2.5 pollution is associated with incident CKD in environments with high PM2.5 exposure. Ambient humidity has a potentially synergetic effect on the association of PM2.5 with the development of CKD. PLAIN-LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Exposure to a form of air pollution known as fine particulate matter (ie, particulate matter ≤2.5 µm [PM2.5]) has been linked to an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but little is known about how PM2.5 affects CKD in regions with extremely high levels of PM2.5 pollution. This longitudinal cohort study in China investigates the effect of PM2.5 on the incidence of CKD and whether temperature or humidity interact with PM2.5. Our findings suggest that long-term exposure to high levels of ambient PM2.5 significantly increased the risk of CKD in mainland China, especially in terms of cumulative average PM2.5. The associations of PM2.5 and incident CKD were greater in high-humidity environments. These findings support the recommendation that reducing PM2.5 pollution should be a priority to decrease the burden of associated health risks, including CKD.

Thermally oxidized MWCNTs (OMWCNTs) are fabricated by a thermal treatment of MWCNTs at 500 °C for 3 h in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The oxygen content of OMWCNTs increases from 1.9 wt% for MWCNTs to 8.3 wt%. And the BET specific surface area of OMWCNTs enhances from 254.2 m2g-1for MWCNTs to 496.1 m2g-1. The Fe2O3/OMWCNTs nanocomposite is prepared by a hydrothermal method. Electrochemical measurements show that Fe2O3/OMWCNTs still keeps a highly reversible specific capacity of 653.6 mA h g-1after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g-1, which shows an obviously higher capacity than the sum of that of single Fe2O3and OMWCNTs. The OMWCNTs not only buffer the volume changes of Fe2O3nanoparticles but also provide high-speed electronic transmission channels in the charge-discharge process. The thermal oxidation method of OMWCNTs avoids using strong corrosive acids such as nitric acid and sulfuric acid, which has the advantages of safety, environmental protection, macroscopic preparation, etc.

BACKGROUND: Usher syndrome (USH) is an autosomal recessive disorder primarily responsible for deaf-blindness. Patients with subtype Usher syndrome type 1 (USH1) typically experience congenital sensorineural hearing loss, abnormal vestibular function, and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Here we present a case of Usher syndrome type 1F (USH1F) with a novel homozygous variant in the calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion protocadherin-15 (PCDH15) gene. CASE PRESENTATION: Ophthalmic examinations were evaluated over a course of 10 years and the disease-causing variant was identified by whole exome sequencing (WES). Initial and follow-up examination of color fundus photos after 10 years revealed an increase in bone spicule pigment deposits in both eyes. A parafoveal hyper-AF ring in both eyes was shown in fundus autofluorescence (FAF) with a progressive diameter-wise constriction observed over 8 years. Outer nuclear layer (ONL) loss was observed in parafoveal and perifoveal regions of both eyes on spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Full-field electroretinography (ffERG) showed extinguished global retinal function. WES identified a novel two-base-pair deletion, c.60_61del (p.Phe21Ter), in the PCDH15 gene, confirming the diagnosis of USH1F. CONCLUSIONS: We report a novel homozygous PCDH15 pathogenic variant expected to lead to nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) of PCDH15 mRNA. The patient exhibits a loss of function with USH1F, experiencing congenital hearing loss and syndromic RP.

Electrolysis of water to generate hydrogen fuel is an attractive renewable energy storage technology. However, grid-scale freshwater electrolysis would put a heavy strain on vital water resources. Developing cheap electrocatalysts and electrodes that can sustain seawater splitting without chloride corrosion could address the water scarcity issue. Here we present a multilayer anode consisting of a nickel-iron hydroxide (NiFe) electrocatalyst layer uniformly coated on a nickel sulfide (NiSx) layer formed on porous Ni foam (NiFe/NiSx-Ni), affording superior catalytic activity and corrosion resistance in solar-driven alkaline seawater electrolysis operating at industrially required current densities (0.4 to 1 A/cm2) over 1,000 h. A continuous, highly oxygen evolution reaction-active NiFe electrocatalyst layer drawing anodic currents toward water oxidation and an in situ-generated polyatomic sulfate and carbonate-rich passivating layers formed in the anode are responsible for chloride repelling and superior corrosion resistance of the salty-water-splitting anode.

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to useful chemicals has been actively pursued for closing the carbon cycle and preventing further deterioration of the environment/climate. Since CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at a cathode is always paired with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at an anode, the overall efficiency of electrical energy to chemical fuel conversion must consider the large energy barrier and sluggish kinetics of OER, especially in widely used electrolytes, such as the pH-neutral CO2-saturated 0.5 M KHCO3 OER in such electrolytes mostly relies on noble metal (Ir- and Ru-based) electrocatalysts in the anode. Here, we discover that by anodizing a metallic Ni-Fe composite foam under a harsh condition (in a low-concentration 0.1 M KHCO3 solution at 85 °C under a high-current ∼250 mA/cm2), OER on the NiFe foam is accompanied by anodic etching, and the surface layer evolves into a nickel-iron hydroxide carbonate (NiFe-HC) material composed of porous, poorly crystalline flakes of flower-like NiFe layer-double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with carbonate anions. The resulting NiFe-HC electrode in CO2-saturated 0.5 M KHCO3 exhibited OER activity superior to IrO2, with an overpotential of 450 and 590 mV to reach 10 and 250 mA/cm2, respectively, and high stability for >120 h without decay. We paired NiFe-HC with a CO2RR catalyst of cobalt phthalocyanine/carbon nanotube (CoPc/CNT) in a CO2 electrolyzer, achieving selective cathodic conversion of CO2 to CO with >97% Faradaic efficiency and simultaneous anodic water oxidation to O2 The device showed a low cell voltage of 2.13 V and high electricity-to-chemical fuel efficiency of 59% at a current density of 10 mA/cm2.

INTRODUCTION: To describe our initial experience with ileal ureteral replacement (IUR) for the management of ureteral avulsion (UA) during ureteroscopic lithotripsy. METHODS: Between September 2010 and April 2021, ten patients received ileal ureteral replacement for ureteral avulsion during ureteroscopic lithotripsy. Anterograde urography and computed tomography urography (CTU) were applied to evaluate the lesion. Follow-up was performed with magnetic resonance urography and renal ultrasound as well as clinical assessment of symptoms. We retrospectively analysed the clinical data of ten patients treated with ileal ureteral replacement for the treatment of ureteral avulsion. RESULTS: Four patients underwent open ileal ureteral replacement, two underwent laparoscopic ileal ureteral replacement, and four underwent robotic-assisted ileal ureteral replacement. The mean operative time (OT) was 310 min (range 191-530). The mean estimated blood loss (EBL) was 193 mL (range 10-1000). The mean length of the ileal graft was 21 cm (range 12-25). The median postoperative hospital time was 13 days (range 7-19). All surgeries were effectively completed, and no case required open conversion in laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgeries. There was no obvious hydronephrosis according to contrast-enhanced computed tomography 3-dimensional reconstruction images without serious complications or progressive hydronephrosis during a median follow-up duration of 51 months (range 5-131), and the success rate was 100%. CONCLUSIONS: Our initial results and experience showed that ileal ureteral replacement for the management of ureteral avulsion during ureteroscopic lithotripsy is safe and feasible.

BACKGROUND: Complete intracorporal robotic ileal ureteric replacement is challenging. We aimed to present the surgical technique of robotic ileal ureter replacement with extracorporeal ileal segment preparation for long ureteral strictures. METHODS: From March 2019 to March 2021, 18 patients underwent robotic ileal ureter replacement with extracorporeal ileal segment preparation by one experienced surgeon. The demographic, perioperative, and follow-up data were recorded. Success was defined as the resolution of the presenting symptom, a stable estimated glomerular filtration rate and unobstructive drainage on imaging examination. RESULTS: All 18 surgeries were successfully completed without conversion. The median length of the intestinal tube used was 20 (12-30) cm. The median operative time was 248 (170-450) min, the median estimated blood loss was 50 (10-200) ml, and the median postoperative hospital stay was 7 (5-27) days. At a median follow-up of 16 (13-28) months, all patients were symptom-free. No or mild hydronephrosis was confirmed in 17 patients; 1 patient had moderate hydronephrosis without peristalsis of the ileal ureter. The renal function was stable in all patients. The overall success rate was 100%. Postoperative complications, including 4 cases of urinary infections (Grade I), 1 case of an incision hernia (Grade I), 4 cases of kidney stone formation (Grade I), 6 cases of metabolic acidosis (Grade I), 4 cases of incomplete ileus (Grade II), and 1 case of an incision infection (Grade IIIb). CONCLUSIONS: Robot-assisted laparoscopic ileal ureter replacement with extracorporeal ileal segment preparation is safe, feasible, and effective for the treatment of long ureteral strictures, especially in high-volume tertiary referral centers with extensive robotic surgery experience capable of managing severe peri-operative complications.
