INTRODUCTION: Data on factors related to mortality in patients with bronchiectasis exacerbation are insufficient. Computed tomography (CT) can measure the pectoralis muscle area (PMA) and is a useful tool to diagnose sarcopenia. This study aimed to evaluate whether PMA can predict mortality in patients with bronchiectasis exacerbation. METHODS: Patients hospitalized due to bronchiectasis exacerbation at a single center were retrospectively divided into survivors and non-survivors based on 1-year mortality. Thereafter, a comparison of the clinical and radiologic characteristics was conducted between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 66 (14%) patients died at 1 year. In the multivariate analysis, age, BMI <18.4 kg/m2, sex-specific PMA quartile, ≥3 exacerbations in the previous year, serum albumin <3.5 g/dL, cystic bronchiectasis, tuberculosis-destroyed lung, and diabetes mellitus were independent predictors for the 1-year mortality in patients hospitalized with bronchiectasis exacerbation. A lower PMA was associated with a lower overall survival rate in the survival analysis according to sex-specific quartiles of PMA. PMA had the highest area under the curve during assessment of prognostic performance in predicting the 1-year mortality. The lowest sex-specific PMA quartile group exhibited higher disease severity than the highest quartile group. CONCLUSIONS: CT-derived PMA was an independent predictor of 1-year mortality in patients hospitalized with bronchiectasis exacerbation. Patients with lower PMA exhibited higher disease severity. These findings suggest that PMA might be a useful marker for providing additional information regarding prognosis of patients with bronchiectasis exacerbation.

An immunoaffinity layer with orientation-controlled antibodies was constructed to express streptococcal protein G in Escherichia coli cells using autodisplay technology. The sequence of protein G, a specific IgG-binding protein, was inserted into the autodisplay vector using recombinant technology and the constructed plasmid vector was transformed into E. coli cells. Protein G was confirmed to be autodisplayed with a high density of 2 × 105 copies per cell by SDS-PAGE analysis, and its IgG-binding affinity was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. Autodisplayed protein G showed higher affinity than the IgG-binding Z-domain for goat IgG. Immunoassays based on E. coli cells were established to detect horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Protein G autodisplaying E. coli cells were utilized as a solid support and immunoassays showed improved sensitivity by orientation control of autodisplayed protein G. The outer membrane (OM) of protein G autodisplaying E. coli was isolated and layered to construct an immunoaffinity layer. The OM was coated on a microplate to perform the immunoassays, which showed limits of detection of 5 and 0.2 ng mL-1 for HRP and CRP, respectively. An OM layer with autodisplayed protein G was applied as the immunoaffinity layer of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor. After CRP detection, the SPR responses showed good linearity, with an R2 value of 0.99. The immunoaffinity layer with orientation control by autodisplayed protein G was confirmed to be applicable in immunoassays and immunosensors to improve sensitivity.

We study a way to set the natural frequency of a newly added oscillator in a growing network to enhance synchronization. Population growth is one of the typical features of many oscillator systems for which synchronization is required to perform their functions properly. Despite this significance, little has been known about synchronization in growing systems. We suggest effective growing schemes to enhance synchronization as the network grows under a predetermined rule. Specifically, we find that a method based on a link-wise order parameter outperforms that based on the conventional global order parameter. With simple solvable examples, we verify that the results coincide with intuitive expectations. The numerical results demonstrate that the approximate optimal values from the suggested method show a larger synchronization enhancement in comparison with other naïve strategies. The results also show that our proposed approach outperforms others over a wide range of coupling strengths.

BACKGROUND: Situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR) has been extensively used in clinical and nursing education. A structured communication program increases effective communication, positivity, and education satisfaction during inter-professional collaboration among nursing students. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of SBAR-based simulation training for nursing students. METHODS: A research protocol was developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols guidelines. The protocol for this study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021234068). Eight bibliographical databases were searched for studies published between 2001 and 2021, using relevant search terms. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for literature in English, and DBpia, Research Information Sharing Service, Korean Studies Information Service System, and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information for literature in Korean. After screening titles, abstracts, and full-text papers, pertinent data were extracted, and critical appraisals of the retrieved studies were performed. Data were analyzed using the framework approach, and the findings were presented in a narrative summary. The Effective Public Health Practice Project "Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies" was used to assess the quality of the included studies. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included: 3 randomized controlled trials and 9 quasi-experimental studies. Two overarching themes were noted, namely communication clarity and critical thinking. The results of six out of 12 studies produced significant results in favor of SBAR-based simulation in terms of communication clarity. Divergent results were obtained regarding communication ability, critical thinking, confidence, learning self-efficacy, and attitude toward patient safety. The results of these studies highlight that communication clarity ultimately leads to positive results in terms of nursing students' behaviors related to patient safety. CONCLUSIONS: This review provides a comprehensive update of the literature on the effectiveness of SBAR-based nursing simulation programs for nursing students. These programs were found to have positive learning outcomes because of clear and concise communication. Further studies on the effectiveness of various learning outcomes derived from SBAR-based programs are required.

There is an increasing need for an independent terrestrial navigation system, owing to the increasing reliance on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). The medium-frequency range (MF R-Mode) system is considered a promising alternative; however, the skywave effect caused by ionospheric changes at night can degrade its positioning accuracy. To address this problem, we developed an algorithm to detect and mitigate the skywave effect on MF R-Mode signals. The proposed algorithm was tested using data collected from Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) monitoring the MF R-Mode signals. The skywave detection algorithm is based on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) induced by the groundwave and skywave composition, whereas the skywave mitigation algorithm was derived from the I and Q components of the signals obtained through IQ modulation. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in the precision and standard deviation of the range estimation using CW1 and CW2 signals. The standard deviations decreased from 39.01 and 39.28 m to 7.94 and 9.12 m, respectively, while the precision (2-sigma) increased from 92.12 and 79.82 m to 15.62 and 17.84 m, respectively. These findings confirm that the proposed algorithms can enhance the accuracy and reliability of MF R-Mode systems.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can attenuate inflammatory responses in peripheral tissues and also improve some neurological disorders and cognitive function in the brain. However, it is not clear how VNS is involved in neuropathological processes in brain tissues. Here, we investigated the regulatory effects of VNS on the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus of an animal model of continuous stress (CS). METHODS: CS was induced by placing rats in cages immersed with water, and acute or chronic electrical stimulation was applied to the cervical vagus nerve of CS animals. Protein levels in the gastric and hippocampal tissues were measured by western blotting and protein signals analyzed by immunofluorescence staining. von Frey test and forced swimming test were performed to assess pain sensitivity and depressive-like behavior in rats, respectively. RESULTS: Levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in the gastric and hippocampal tissues were significantly increased in CS animals compared to the untreated control and downregulated by acute VNS (aVNS). Iba-1-labeled microglial cells in the hippocampus of CS animals revealed morphological features of activated inflammatory cells and then changed to a normal shape by VNS. VNS elevated hippocampal expression of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChR) in CS animals, and pharmacological blockade of α7 nAChR increased the production of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6, thus suppressing cholinergic anti-inflammatory activity that was mediated by VNS. Chronic VNS (cVNS) down-regulated the hippocampal production of active form of caspase 3 and 5-HT1A receptors and also decreased levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in the gastric and hippocampal tissues of CS animals. Pain sensitivity and depressive-like behavior, which were increased by CS, were improved by cVNS. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that VNS may be involved in modulating pathophysiological processes caused by CS in the brain.

Novel bipyridine-based heterocyclic building block, 3,10-dichloro-benzo[f][1,10]phenanthroline and its Ruthenium(II) complex have been synthesized and fully characterized. The synthesized Ru(II)-complex is highly luminescent displaying emission at 590 nm with quantum yield of ∼0.8 in methanol. Ru(II) complex showed photocytotoxicity upon 400 nm blue light irradiation. Mechanistic study revealed that photoactivated Ru(II) complex generates reactive radical species which can damage the protein inside the cells and induce cell death even with short irradiation time.

BACKGROUND: This pilot study aimed to investigate the effects of developing scenario learning (DSL) on team efficacy, systems thinking, and proactivity in problem-solving in a fundamental nursing course. METHODS: A total of 53 second-year nursing students were enrolled in the study; the DSL nursing education program was implemented for 15 weeks from March 4 to June 17, 2021. Data on team efficacy, systems thinking, and proactivity in problem-solving were measured before and after the DSL-based nursing education program. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 22.0. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that nursing students' team efficacy (t = - 8.228, p < .001, Cohen's d = 1.079), systems thinking (t = - 9.757, p < .001, Cohen's d = .731), and proactivity in problem-solving (t = - 8.635, p < .001, Cohen's d = .992) significantly increased after the program. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study can contribute to the development of nursing competency in nursing students without experience in nursing practicum. The authors recommend incorporating DSL in the nursing curriculum to promote early adaptation in clinical settings.

The attempts to devise networks that resemble human minds are steadily progressing through the development and diversification of neural networks (NN), such as artificial NN (ANN), convolution NN (CNN), and recurrent NN (RNN). Meanwhile, memory devices applied on the networks are also being studied together, and RRAM is the one of the most promising candidates. The fabricated ITO/SnOX/TaN device showed two forms of current-voltage (I-V) curves, classified as dynamic and static. It was triggered from the forming process, and the difference between the two curves resulted from the data retention measured at room temperature for 103 s. The dynamic curve shows a time-dependent change in the data, and the cause of the data preservation period was considered through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and linear fitting in conduction mechanisms. To confirm whether the memory performance of the device may be implemented on the synapse, the change in the plasticity was confirmed using a rectangular-shaped pulse. Paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) was implemented, and the change from short-term potentiation (STP) to long-term potentiation (LTP) was achieved.

Nitride film played an essential role as an excellent diffusion barrier in the semiconductor field for several decades. In addition, interest in next-generation memories induced researchers' attention to nitride film as a new storage medium. A Pt/AlN/TaN device was investigated for resistive random-access memory (RRAM) application in this work. Resistive switching properties were examined in the AlN thin film formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The unique switching feature conducted under the positive voltage was investigated, while the typical bipolar switching was conducted under the application of negative voltage. Good retention and DC, and pulse endurances were achieved in both conditions and compared to the memory performances. Finally, the electronic behaviors based on the unique switching feature were analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the current-voltage (I-V) linear fitting model.

Target protein degradation has emerged as a promising strategy for the discovery of novel therapeutics during the last decade. Proteolysis-targeting chimera (PROTAC) harnesses a cellular ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis system for the efficient degradation of a protein of interest. PROTAC consists of a target protein ligand and an E3 ligase ligand so that it enables the target protein degradation owing to the induced proximity with ubiquitin ligases. Although a great number of PROTACs has been developed so far using previously reported ligands of proteins for their degradation, E3 ligase ligands have been mostly limited to either CRBN or VHL ligands. Those PROTACs showed their limitation due to the cell type specific expression of E3 ligases and recently reported resistance toward PROTACs with CRBN ligands or VHL ligands. To overcome these hurdles, the discovery of various E3 ligase ligands has been spotlighted to improve the current PROTAC technology. This review focuses on currently reported E3 ligase ligands and their application in the development of PROTACs.

BACKGROUND. Ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous pleural needle biopsy (PCPNB) is widely used to evaluate pleural lesions, although its diagnostic accuracy is variable. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study is to assess the diagnostic yield of US-guided PCPNB for small (≤ 2 cm) pleural lesions and the impact of CT and US morphologic and technical factors. METHODS. A total of 103 patients (73 men and 30 women; mean [± SD] age, 68.0 ± 13.3 years) who underwent US-guided PCPNB of a small pleural lesion performed by a single experienced operator from July 2013 to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Final diagnosis was established via histopathologic results, including findings from repeat US-guided and CT-guided biopsies as well as imaging and clinical follow-up. Pleural morphology and thickness were assessed on CT and US, and needle pathway length throughout the pleura was measured on US. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were calculated. The association of diagnostic yield with imaging and technical factors was evaluated. ROC curve analysis was used to determine the optimal CT pleural thickness cutoff value. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors of diagnostic yield. RESULTS. The diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of US-guided PCPNB were 85.4%, 84.8%, 100.0%, 100.0%, and 21.1%, respectively. Diagnostic, compared with nondiagnostic, procedures more commonly (p ≤ .002) revealed nodular morphology on CT (96.4% vs 3.6%) and US (97.3% vs 2.7%,), greater pleural thickness on CT (7.5 vs 3.2 mm) and US (7.4 vs 3.0 mm), and a greater needle pathway length (11.0 vs 6.1 mm). The optimal cutoff value for pleural thickness on CT was 4.5 mm. Diagnostic yield was 96.4% for nodular lesions, 95.0% for diffuse lesions that had a thickness of 4.5 mm or greater on CT, 55.6% for diffuse lesions that had a thickness less than 4.5 mm on CT, and 100% for diffuse lesions on CT that had nodular morphology on US. Nodular morphology on US (p = .002) and needle pathway length (p = .04) were independent predictors of diagnostic yield. CONCLUSION. US-guided PCPNB has excellent diagnostic accuracy for small pleural lesions; imaging characteristics influence this accuracy. CLINICAL IMPACT. US-guided PCPNB is highly likely diagnostic for small pleural lesions with nodular morphology on either CT or US or with a pleural thickness of 4.5 mm or greater.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease characterized by degradation and inflammation of cartilage extracellular matrix. We aimed to evaluate the protective effect of Caragana sinica root (CSR) on interleukin (IL)-1ß-stimulated rat chondrocytes and a monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced model of OA. In vitro, cell viability of CSR-treated chondrocytes was measured by MTT assay. The mRNA expression of Matrix metallopeptidases (MMPs), a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTSs) and extracellular matrix (ECM) were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Moreover, the protein expression of MAPK (phosphorylation of EKR, JNK, p38), inhibitory kappa B (IκBα) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB p65) was detected by western blot analysis. In vivo, the production of nitric oxide (NO) was detected by Griess reagent, while those of inflammatory mediators, MMPs and ECM were detected by ELISA. The degree of OA was evaluated by histopathological analyses, Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) score and micro-CT analysis. CSR significantly inhibited the expression of MMPs, ADAMTSs and the degradation of ECM in IL-1ß-stimulated chondrocytes. Furthermore, CSR significantly suppressed IL-1ß-stimulated of MAPKs, NF-κB signaling pathway. In vivo, CSR and Indomethacin inhibited the production of inflammatory mediators, MMPs and degradation of ECM in MIA-induced model of OA. In addition, CSR improved the severity of OA. Taken together, these results suggest CSR is a potential therapeutic active agent in the treatment of OA.

A regenerable immunoaffinity layer comprising covalently immobilized orientation-controlled antibodies was developed for use in a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor. For antibody orientation control, antibody-binding Z-domain-autodisplaying Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells and their outer membrane (OM) were utilized, and a disuccinimidyl crosslinker was employed for covalent antibody binding. To fabricate the regenerable immunoaffinity layer, capture antibodies were bound to autodisplayed Z-domains, and then treated with the crosslinker for chemical fixation to the Z-domains. Various crosslinkers, namely disuccinimidyl glutarate (DSG), disuccinimidyl suberate (DSS) and poly (ethylene glycol)-ylated bis (sulfosuccinimidyl)suberate (BS(PEG)5), were evaluated, and DSS at a concentration of 500 µM was confirmed to be optimal. The E. coli-cell-based regenerable HRP immunoassay was evaluated employing three sequential HRP treatment and regeneration steps. Then, the Oms of E. coli cells were isolated and layered on a microplate and regenerable OM-based HRP immunoassaying was evaluated. Five HRP immunoassays with four regeneration steps were found to be feasible. This regenerable, covalently immobilized, orientation-controlled OM-based immunoaffinity layer was applied to an SPR biosensor, which was capable of quantifying C-reactive protein (CRP). Five regeneration cycles were repeated using the demonstrated immunoaffinity layer with a signal difference of <10%.

RATIONALE: A rapid and massive influx of inflammatory cells occurs into ischemic area after myocardial infarction (MI), resulting in local release of cytokines and growth factors. Yet, the mechanisms regulating their production are not fully explored. The release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the interstitial space curbs important biological functions, including inflammation, and influences the development of cardiovascular diseases. To date, there is no evidence for in situ release of cardiac EVs after MI. OBJECTIVE: The present study tested the hypothesis that local EV generation in the infarcted heart coordinates cardiac inflammation after MI. METHODS AND RESULTS: Coronary artery ligation in mice transiently increases EV levels in the left ventricle when compared with sham animals. EVs from infarcted hearts were characterized as large vesicles (252±18 nm) expressing cardiomyocyte and endothelial markers and small EVs (118±4 nm) harboring exosomal markers, such as CD (cluster of differentiation) 63 and CD9. Cardiac large EVs generated after MI, but not small EVs or sham EVs, increased the release of IL (interleukin)-6, CCL (chemokine ligand) 2, and CCL7 from fluorescence-activated cell-sorted Ly6C+ cardiac monocytes. EVs of similar diameter were also isolated from fragments of interventricular septum obtained from patients undergoing aortic valve replacement, thus supporting the clinical relevance of our findings in mice. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that acute MI transiently increases the generation of cardiac EVs characterized as both exosomes and microvesicles, originating mainly from cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells. EVs accumulating in the ischemic myocardium are rapidly taken up by infiltrating monocytes and regulate local inflammatory responses.

INTRODUCTION: Herpes zoster laryngitis (HZL) is a recently recognized rare disease, easily mistaken for common viral laryngopharyngitis. There are only a few case reports in the English literature. No study has evaluated the clinical characteristics of HZL. In this study, we analyzed the clinical characteristics of HZL and compared them to those of Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-three patients who were initially diagnosed with HZL or RHS were enrolled in this study. Their medical records, including laryngoscopic findings, were analyzed retrospectively. The demographic factors, cranial nerve involvement, and recovery rate of both groups were evaluated. RESULTS: Sixty patients in the non-HZL group and 13 patients in the HZL group were analyzed. Five more patients in the non-HZL group were newly identified with HZL during the retrospective chart review. The mean age of the patients in the HZL group was higher than that of the non-HZL group (p = 0.016). The prevalence of hypertension was higher in the HZL group (p = 0.012). Patients with multiple cranial nerve involvement were more common in the HZL group (p < 0.001). In addition, the prognosis of facial weakness (p = 0.002) and multisensory dizziness (p = 0.006) was poor in HZL group. CONCLUSION: This study showed that a considerable proportion of HZL cases were misdiagnosed or overlooked if not suspected. Considering the poor prognosis of HZL patients with facial paralysis and dizziness, HZL should be diagnosed earlier and treated properly.

Crystals of monosodium urate monohydrate (MSU) and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) are known to induce arthropathic diseases called gout and pseudogout, respectively. These crystals are deposited in various joints or tissues, causing severe pain. Correct identification of crystals is crucial for the appropriate treatment of gout and pseudogout, which exhibit very similar symptoms. Herein, a novel approach of laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (LDI-ToF) mass spectrometry (MS) was introduced to analyze MSU and CPPD crystals with three different types of nanostructured TiO2 materials including TiO2 nanoparticles (P25), TiO2 nanowires synthesized from wet-corrosion method, and the mixture of P25 and TiO2 nanowires (P25/TiO2 nanowires) as inorganic solid matrices. Furthermore, the feasibility of LDI-ToF MS based on these TiO2 nanostructures for the analysis of the two arthropathy-related crystals was tested using spiked samples in synovial fluid at known crystal concentrations. The mass analysis results of MSU and CPPD crystals demonstrated that (1) the electrostatic interaction between analytes and solid matrices was key for the analyte ionization and (2) LDI-ToF MS with nanostructured TiO2 materials has the potential to be a practical approach for the diagnosis of gout and pseudogout.

In this work, medical diagnosis of sepsis was conducted via quantitative analysis of lysophosphatidylcholine 16:0 (LPC 16:0) by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry based on a parylene-matrix chip. In the first step, specific mass peaks for the diagnosis of sepsis were searched by comparing MALDI-TOF mass spectra of sepsis patient sera with healthy controls and pneumonia patient sera. Two mass peaks at m/z = 496.3 and 518.3 were chosen as those that are specifically different for sepsis sera to compare with healthy controls and pneumonia patient sera. These mass peaks were identified to be protonated and sodium adducts of LPC 16:0 by using tandem mass spectra (MS2 and MS3) of purely synthesized LPC 16:0 and extracted LPC 16:0 from a healthy control and a sepsis patient. In the next step, a standard curve for LPC 16:0 for the quantitative analysis of LPC 16:0 with MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip was prepared, and the statistical correlation to the LC-MS analysis results was demonstrated by using the Bland-Altman test and Passing-Bablok regression. Finally, MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip was used for the quantification of LPC 16:0 with sera from patients with severe sepsis and septic shock (n = 143), pneumonia patients (n = 12), and healthy sera (n = 31). The sensitivity and the selectivity of medical diagnosis of sepsis was estimated to be 97.9% and 95.5% by using MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip, respectively.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is developed by multiple steps accompanying progressive alterations of gene expression, which leads to increased cell proliferation and malignancy. Although environmental factors and intracellular signaling pathways that are critical for HCC progression have been identified, gene expression changes and the related genetic factors contributing to HCC pathogenesis are still insufficiently understood. In this study, we identify a transcriptional repressor, Capicua (CIC), as a suppressor of HCC progression and a potential therapeutic target. Expression of CIC is posttranscriptionally reduced in HCC cells. CIC levels are correlated with survival rates in patients with HCC. CIC overexpression suppresses HCC cell proliferation and invasion, whereas loss of CIC exerts opposite effects in vivo as well as in vitro. Levels of polyoma enhancer activator 3 (PEA3) group genes, the best-known CIC target genes, are correlated with lethality in patients with HCC. Among the PEA3 group genes, ETS translocation variant 4 (ETV4) is the most significantly up-regulated in CIC-deficient HCC cells, consequently promoting HCC progression. Furthermore, it induces expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1), the MMP gene highly relevant to HCC progression, in HCC cells; and knockdown of MMP1 completely blocks the CIC deficiency-induced HCC cell proliferation and invasion. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that the CIC-ETV4-MMP1 axis is a regulatory module controlling HCC progression. (Hepatology 2018;67:2287-2301).

Because mitochondria are essential organelles for regulating energy homeostasis and intrinsic apoptosis, the perturbation of mitochondrial functions has been considered as an anticancer treatment. In this study, a new near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe, SiR-Mito11 was developed as a theragnostic agent for brain tumor by targeting mitochondria. SiR-Mito11 exhibited potential anticancer activity against glioma cells but tolerance in normal neuronal cells. We further confirmed that the selective accumulation of SiR-Mito11 in glioma cells disrupted mitochondria membrane potential, followed by apoptotic cell death.
