RESUMEN

This study introduces an innovative optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging system dedicated to high-throughput screening applications using ex vivo tissue culture. Leveraging OCT's non-invasive, high-resolution capabilities, the system is equipped with a custom-designed motorized platform and tissue detection ability for automated, successive imaging across samples. Transformer-based deep-learning segmentation algorithms further ensure robust, consistent, and efficient readouts meeting the standards for screening assays. Validated using retinal explant cultures from a mouse model of retinal degeneration, the system provides robust, rapid, reliable, unbiased, and comprehensive readouts of tissue response to treatments. This fully automated OCT-based system marks a significant advancement in tissue screening, promising to transform drug discovery, as well as other relevant research fields.

RESUMEN

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal disorder characterized by the degeneration of photoreceptors. RhoP23H/+ mice, which carry a Pro23His mutation in the RHODOPSIN (Rho) gene, are one of the most studied animal models for RP. However, except for the photoreceptors, other retinal neural cells have not been fully investigated in this model. Here, we record the temporal changes of the retina by optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of the RhoP23H/+ mice, from early to mid-phase of retinal degeneration. Based on thickness analysis, we identified a natural retinal thickness adaption in wild-type mice during early adulthood and observed morphological compensation of the inner retina layer to photoreceptor degeneration in the RhoP23H/+ mice, primarily on the inner nuclear layer (INL). RhoP23H/+ mice findings were further validated via: histology showing the negative correlation of INL and ONL thicknesses; as well as electroretinogram (ERG) showing an increased b-wave to a-wave ratio. These results unravel the sequential morphologic events in this model and suggest a better understanding of retinal degeneration of RP for future studies.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a harmful acidic gas generated from power plants and fossil fuel combustion and represents a significant health risk and threat to the environment. Benzimidazole-linked polymers (BILPs) have emerged as a promising class of porous solid adsorbents for toxic gases because of their chemical and thermal stability as well as the chemical nature of the imidazole moiety. The performance of BILPs in SO2 capture was examined by synergistic experimental and theoretical studies. BILPs exhibit a significantly high SO2 uptake of up to 8.5 mmol g-1 at 298 K and 1.0 bar. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict that this high SO2 uptake is due to the dipole-dipole interactions between SO2 and the functionalized polymer frames through O2S(δ+)···N(δ-)-imine and O═S═O(δ-)···H(δ+)-aryl and intermolecular attraction between SO2 molecules (O═S═O(δ-)···S(δ+)O2). Moderate isosteric heats of adsorption (Qst ≈ 38 kJ mol-1) obtained from experimental SO2 uptake studies are well supported by the DFT calculations (≈40 kJ mol-1), which suggests physisorption processes enabling rapid adsorbent regeneration for reuse. Repeated adsorption experiments with almost identical SO2 uptake confirm the easy regeneration and robustness of BILPs. Moreover, BILPs possess very high SO2 adsorption selectivity at low concentration over carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen (N2): SO2/CO2, 19-24; SO2/CH4, 118-113; SO2/N2, 600-674. This study highlights the potential of BILPs in the desulfurization of flue gas or other gas mixtures through capturing trace levels of SO2.

Phototherapy is broadly utilized for treatment of inflammatory skin conditions affecting pediatric patients. However, there are no specific guidelines or recommendations for implementing phototherapy in pediatric populations leading to variability in treatment procedures. Here, we present findings from a cross-sectional, survey-based study investigating the implementation of phototherapy in pediatric patients across the United States. A total of 39 sites from 19 different states identified via the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) Health Care Provider Directory responded. Common practices included a signed informed consent prior to performing phototherapy (86.4%, n = 32), no minimum age requirement for pediatric patients (91.8%, n = 34), the use of Fitzpatrick skin type to determine dosing protocol (100%, n = 37), and allowing parents to accompany their children into the lightbox (65%, n = 20). Our results provide insights into current common practices and themes for further study.

Background: Prior research suggests that pediatric patients and their parents/guardians are generally satisfied with care provided through telehealth. The objective of this study was to compare Press Ganey provider-oriented experience survey scores between telehealth and in-person patient encounters among a variety of pediatric clinical specialties at a large academic medical center. Methods: We analyzed Press Ganey survey data from pediatric patient encounters from UC Davis Health, collected between August 2020 and February 2022. Survey results analyzed respondents' satisfaction with care providers, including satisfaction with explanations given, discussions led, concern showed, and inclusion by providers; and the likelihood the survey respondent would recommend the provider to others. We used logistic regression models, which included case mix variables and clinical specialty to compare the odds of scoring the highest possible survey response ("top box" score). Results: Of the 6,093 survey responses that met inclusion criteria, 1,157 (19%) were associated with telehealth encounters and 4,936 (81%) were associated with in-person encounters. We found no significant difference in the odds of respondents giving a top box score to rate their satisfaction with their care provider between telehealth and in-person encounters. When respondents were asked whether they would recommend the care provider to others, the odds of giving a top box score following a telehealth encounter relative to an in-person encounter was 1.22 (95% confidence interval [0.97-1.52]; p-value = 0.09). Discussion: We found that survey respondents' experiences with their care provider are high and comparable for telehealth and in-person encounters in a pediatric population.

INTRODUCTION: American Indian and Alaskan Natives (AIAN) and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (NHPI) research is limited, particularly in postoperative surgical outcomes. This study analyzes disparities in AIAN and NHPI surgical complications across all surgical types and identifies factors that contribute to postoperative complications. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined all surgeries from 2011 to 2020 in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, queried by race. Multivariable models analyzed the association of race and ethnicity and 30-day postoperative complication. Next, multivariable models were used to identify preoperative variables associated with postoperative complications, specifically in AIAN and NHPI patients. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: AIAN patients were associated with higher odds of postoperative complication (AOR: 1.008 [CI: 1.005-1.011], P < 0.001) compared to non-Hispanic white patients. The comorbidities that were of higher incidence in AIAN patients, which also adversely contributed to postoperative complication, included dependent functional status, diabetes, congestive heart failure (CHF), open wounds, preoperative weight loss, bleeding disorders, preoperative transfusion, sepsis, hypoalbuminemia, along with an active smoking status and ASA ≥3. In NHPI patients, dependent functional status, CHF, renal failure, preoperative transfusion, open wounds, and sepsis were of higher incidence and significantly contributed to postoperative complication. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical outcome disparities exist particularly in AIAN patients. Identification of modifiable patient risk factors may benefit perioperative care for AIAN and NHPI patients, which are historically understudied racial groups.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis patients with poor therapeutic response to multiple biologic agents are not well-characterized. OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics associated with development of multiple biologic failure (MBF) versus good clinical response (GR) to the first biologic. METHODS: This prospective cohort analysis evaluated patients in the multicenter CorEvitas Psoriasis Registry who initiated their first biologic between 2015 and 2020 and were followed for ≥24 months. Multivariable logistic regression identified sociodemographic, clinical, and patient-reported outcomes that differed between MBF (discontinued ≥2 biologics of different classes, each used for ≥90 days, due to inadequate efficacy) and GR (continued use of first biologic for ≥2 years) patients. RESULTS: One thousand thirty-nine patients were analyzed (490 GR [47.2%], 65 MBF [6.3%]). Female sex, shorter psoriasis duration, earlier year of biologic initiation, prior nonbiologic systemic therapy use, history of hyperlipidemia, and Medicaid insurance were significantly associated with MBF, though the latter 2 variables exhibited wider confidence intervals, indicating a lower level of support. The first-to-second biologic sequence most observed with MBF was Tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor to IL-17 inhibitor use. LIMITATIONS: Biologic adherence between visits was not evaluated. CONCLUSION: Approximately 6% of psoriasis patients met MBF criteria. The results identify characteristics associated with MBF that may distinguish patients warranting more frequent follow-up.

Mammalian circRNAs can influence different cellular processes by interacting with proteins and other nucleic acids. Here, we used ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation (RIP) analysis to identify systematically the circRNAs associated with the cancer-related protein AUF1. Among the circRNAs interacting with AUF1 in HeLa (human cervical carcinoma) cells, we focused on hsa_circ_0032434 (circPCNX), an abundant target of AUF1. Overexpression of circPCNX specifically interfered with the binding of AUF1 to p21 (CDKN1A) mRNA, thereby promoting p21 mRNA stability and elevating the production of p21, a major inhibitor of cell proliferation. Conversely, silencing circPCNX increased AUF1 binding to p21 mRNA, reducing p21 production and promoting cell division. Importantly, eliminating the AUF1-binding region of circPCNX abrogated the rise in p21 levels and rescued proliferation. Therefore, we propose that the interaction of circPCNX with AUF1 selectively prevents AUF1 binding to p21 mRNA, leading to enhanced p21 mRNA stability and p21 protein production, thereby suppressing cell growth.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the utilization of brachytherapy and duration of treatment on overall survival for locally advanced cervical cancer. METHODS: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried to identify stage II-IVA cervical cancer patients diagnosed in the United States between 2004 and 2015 who were treated with definitive chemoradiation therapy. We defined standard of care (SOC) treatment as receiving external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and concurrent chemotherapy, brachytherapy (BT), and completing treatment within 8 weeks, and compared SOC treatment to non-SOC. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). We also evaluated the effect of sociodemographic and clinical variables on receiving SOC. RESULTS: We identified 10,172 women with locally advanced cervical cancer primarily treated with chemotherapy and concurrent EBRT of which 6047 (59.4%) patients received brachytherapy, and only 2978 (29.3%) completed treatment within 8 weeks (SOC). Receipt of SOC was associated with significantly improved overall survival (median OS 131.0 mos vs 95.5 mos, 78.1 mos, 49.2 mos; p < 0.0001). Furthemore, in patients whose treatment extended beyond 8 weeks, brachytherapy was still associated with an improved survival (median OS 95.5 vs 49.2 mos, p < 0.0001). More advanced stage, Non-Hispanic Black race, lower income, lack of insurance or government insurance, less education, and rural residence were associated with decreased likelihood of receiving SOC. CONCLUSIONS: Completing standard of care concurrent chemoradiation therapy and brachytherapy in the recommended 8 weeks was associated with a superior overall survival. Patients who received brachytherapy boost show superior survival to patients receiving EBRT alone, regardless of treatment duration. Disparities in care for vulnerable populations highlight the challenges and importance of care coordination for patients with cervical cancer.

Surface wetting phenomena impact chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering. The wetting behaviors of partially miscible binary liquid systems are especially complex. Here, we report evidence of universal behavior in the divergence of wetting layer growth at liquid-vapor interfaces of the cyclohexane + aniline, hexane + o-toluidine, and methanol + carbon disulfide systems. Layer growth on the micron scale was followed using visible light scattering from stirred samples. The layer thicknesses were found to diverge with decreasing temperature when coexistence was approached from the one-phase region, but only for solutions richer in the higher density/higher surface tension component. The onset of divergence was <1 K above the bulk coexistence temperature; nearer the critical composition, the onset temperature was the critical temperature itself. All three systems showed identical divergent wetting properties after variable normalization. In contrast, no divergent wetting layer formation was seen in the benzene + 1,2-propanediol or water + phenol systems. The mathematical sign of the Hamaker constant correlates with the contrasting behaviors. Collectively, these results have implications for theoretical descriptions of adsorption layer growth and crossover behavior, for measurements of complete wetting temperatures, and for practical applications.

Unique among apes, orangutans (Pongo spp.) develop a chronic respiratory disease called orangutan respiratory disease syndrome (ORDS). The authors define ORDS as intermittent bacterial infection and chronic inflammation of any region or combination of regions of the respiratory tract, including the sinuses, air sacs, cranial bones, airways, and lung parenchyma. Infection in any of these areas can present acutely but then becomes recurrent, chronic, progressive, and ultimately fatal. The closest model to this disease is cystic fibrosis (CF) in people. We hypothesized that use of a 4-8-wk course of combined oral antibiotics used in the treatment of bronchiectasis in CF patients would lead to prolonged symptomatic and computed tomography (CT) scan improvement in orangutans experiencing early signs of ORDS. Nine adult Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus, eight males, one female, 18-29 yr of age) diagnosed with early ORDS-like respiratory disease underwent CT scan before initiation of treatment. Each animal received a combined course of azithromycin (400 mg 3/wk, mean 7 mg/kg) and levofloxacin (500 mg PO q24h, mean 8.75 mg/kg) for a period of 4-8 wk. CT scan was repeated 6-14 mon after completion of antibiotic treatment. Pretreatment CT showed that six of nine animals had lower respiratory pathology (airway disease, pneumonia, or both). All six orangutans had concurrent sinusitis, mastoiditis, airsacculitis, or a combination of these conditions. Upper respiratory disease alone was observed in three animals. CT showed improvement or resolution in four of five sinusitis cases, improvement in one of two instances of mastoiditis, resolution in five of six instances of airsacculitis, improvement or resolution in six of six instance of lower airway disease (P = 0.03, 95% CI 0.54-1.0], and resolution in five of five cases of pneumonia. Resolution of pretreatment clinical signs was observed in all nine animals. Two developed signs not present at pretreatment. These results show that combination antibiotic therapy with azithromycin and levofloxacin provides improvement in clinical signs and CT evidence of ORDS-related pathology, resulting in symptom-free status in some animals for up to 33 mon.

Orangutans are noteworthy among great apes in their predilection for chronic, insidious, and ultimately fatal respiratory disease. Termed Orangutan Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ORDS), this cystic fibrosis-like disease is characterized by comorbid conditions of sinusitis, mastoiditis, airsacculitis, bronchiectasis, and recurrent pneumonia. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the sensitivity of clinical signs in the diagnosis of ORDS in Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) compared with the gold standard for diagnosis via computed tomography (CT). We retrospectively compared observed clinical signs with CT imaging in a population of clinically affected animals at an orangutan rescue center in southeastern Borneo. From August 2017 to 2019, this center housed 21 ORDS-affected animals, all of which underwent CT imaging to delineate which areas of the respiratory tract were affected. We reviewed clinical signs recorded in medical records and keeper observation notes for each individual for the period of 2 years prior to the date of the CT scan. A chi-square test of association was used to assess whether the observed clinical signs could predict the results of CT imaging. Results show that clinical signs may not be sensitive indicators in predicting respiratory disease identified by CT imaging. Based on the results of this study, clinical signs appear to be very poor predictors of underlying respiratory pathology in orangutans, based on high P-values, low sensitivity, and low specificity. This result is observed even with clinical signs data gathered over a full 24-mo period prior to CT scan performance. The findings of this study suggest the need for advanced imaging to properly diagnose and manage the most common health issue of captive orangutans.

Cancer complicates 1 in 1000 pregnancies. Multidisciplinary consensus comprised of Gynecologic Oncology, Pathology, Neonatology, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Social Work should be convened. Pregnancy provides an opportunity for cervical cancer screening, with deliberate delays in treatment permissible for early stage carcinoma. Vaginal delivery is contraindicated in the presence of gross lesion(s) and radical hysterectomy with lymphadenectomy at cesarean delivery is recommended. Women with locally advanced and metastatic/recurrent disease should commence treatment at diagnosis with chemoradiation and systemic therapy, respectively; neoadjuvant chemotherapy to permit gestational advancement may be considered in select cases. Most adnexal masses are benign and resolve by the second trimester. Persistent, asymptomatic, benign-appearing masses can be managed conservatively; surgery, if indicated, is best deferred to 15-20 weeks, with laparoscopy preferable over laparotomy whenever possible. Benign and malignant germ cell tumors and borderline tumors are occasionally encountered, with unilateral adnexectomy and preservation of the uterus and contralateral ovary being the rule. Epithelial ovarian cancer is exceedingly rare. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging lack ionizing radiation and can be employed to evaluate disease extent. Tumor markers, including CA-125, AFP, LDH, inhibin-B, and even CEA and ßhCG may be informative. If required, chemotherapy can be administered following organogenesis during the second and third trimesters. Because platinum and other anti-neoplastic agents cross the placenta, chemotherapy should be withheld after 34 weeks to avoid neonatal myelosuppression. Bevacizumab, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and PARP inhibitors should be avoided throughout pregnancy. Although antenatal glucocorticoids to facilitate fetal pulmonary maturation and amniotic fluid index assessment can be considered, there is no demonstrable benefit of tocolytics, antepartum fetal heart rate monitoring, and/or amniocentesis. Endometrial, vulvar, and vaginal cancer in pregnancy are curiosities, although leiomyosarcoma and the dreaded twin fetus/hydatidiform mole have been reported. For gynecologic malignancies, pregnancy does not impart aggressive clinical behavior and/or worse prognosis.

Chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been proposed as materials for renewable packaging with low O2 transmission that protect food, medicine, and electronics. A challenge in biomass-derived functional materials is tuning both barrier and mechanical properties, while minimizing process steps. A concept that merits additional study in this field is tuning of the barrier and mechanical properties by use of oppositely charged biomass-derived fibers, through interactions that support dense film formation. We report free-standing films formed by solution casting of blends of aqueous suspensions of CNCs and ChNFs with either low degree of acetylation (LChNFs, higher charge) or high degree of acetylation (HChNFs, lower charge). While neat CNC films had the highest O2 permeability (OP), the OP was lowered by 91% by addition of at least 25 wt % LChNFs to CNCs to an OP value near 1.7 cm3 µm/m2/d/kPa. Interestingly, blends of CNCs with less highly charged, larger HChNFs had equivalently lower OP as with LChNFs. The tensile strength and strain at break of blended ChNF/CNC films was optimal compared to neat cellulose or chitin when at least 50 wt % LChNFs or HChNFs were blended with CNCs. We show that the ability to tune properties of ChNF/CNC blends was coincident with the formation of aggregates of chitin and cellulose nanomaterials, which appear to support formation of dense layers of tortuous fiber networks.

Pancreatic ß-cell replacement by islet transplantation for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is currently limited by donor tissue scarcity and the requirement for lifelong immunosuppression. The advent of in vitro differentiation protocols for generating functional ß-like cells from human pluripotent stem cells, also referred to as SC-ß cells, could eliminate these obstacles. To avoid the need for immunosuppression, alginate-microencapsulation is widely investigated as a safe path to ß-cell replacement. Nonetheless, inflammatory foreign body responses leading to pericapsular fibrotic overgrowth often causes microencapsulated islet-cell death and graft failure. Here we used a novel approach to evade the pericapsular fibrotic response to alginate-microencapsulated SC-ß cells; an immunomodulatory chemokine, CXCL12, was incorporated into clinical grade sodium alginate to microencapsulate SC-ß cells. CXCL12 enhanced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion activity of SC-ß cells and induced expression of genes associated with ß-cell function in vitro. SC-ß cells co-encapsulated with CXCL12 showed enhanced insulin secretion in diabetic mice and accelerated the normalization of hyperglycemia. Additionally, SC-ß cells co-encapsulated with CXCL12 evaded the pericapsular fibrotic response, resulting in long-term functional competence and glycemic correction (>150 days) without systemic immunosuppression in immunocompetent C57BL/6 mice. These findings lay the groundwork for further preclinical translation of this approach into large animal models of T1D.

OBJECTIVE: Saliva can provide a non-invasive approach to indicate changes in the oral and systemic conditions. Salivary proteomics allows the discovery of new protein biomarkers associated with certain conditions. The effectiveness and physiological effects of orthodontic tooth movement in theory can be measured using salivary protein biomarkers. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: This study applied a systematic review to analyse current literature to define and summarize salivary biomarkers associated with orthodontic tooth movement identified by mass spectrometry proteomics and other protein detection techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Peer-reviewed articles published through the 15th of November 2018 via the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Dentistry & Oral Sciences databases were reviewed. Only studies analysing protein biomarkers in saliva samples collected from human subjects associated with orthodontic treatments were included. RESULTS: Out of 482 articles, 7 studies were selected. Sample size ranged from 3 to 72 subjects. Minor variations of unstimulated whole saliva sample collection protocol were noted. Mass spectrometry proteomics and ELISA represented the majority of biomarker discovery and targeting, respectively. Twenty biomarkers were identified or chosen as target biomarkers. CONCLUSION: Salivary proteins may be used to indicate effectiveness of orthodontic treatment and orthognathic treatment as well as adverse treatment consequence, such as root resorption.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The design of porous tantalum trabecular metal-enhanced titanium (TM) dental implants promises improved osseointegration, especially when grafting materials such as demineralized bone matrix are used; however, studies are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare TM implants with conventional titanium alloy (Ti) implants with and without demineralized bone matrix in terms of peri-implant bone remodeling in the first year after implant loading. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A chart review was used for all patients receiving Tapered Screw-Vent Ti and TM implants. Implants were placed and restored by a single provider between 2011 and 2015. Peri-implant bone remodeling was compared by using a paired t test (α=.05). RESULTS: A total of 82 patients received 205 implants, 44 TM and 161 Ti implants (control). No implants failed in the TM group (survival rate of 100%), and 3 implants in total, 1 immediate, failed in the Ti groups (survival rate of 98.1%). TM implants exhibited a 0.28-mm bone gain on average, whereas the control group demonstrated 0.20 mm of marginal bone loss after the first year of implant loading. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the odds of having bone loss was 64% less (odds ratio: 0.36; 95% confidence interval: 0.14-0.94) in the TM group than in the Ti group after controlling for bone grafting, implant location, immediate placement, bone type, and pretreatment bone level. CONCLUSIONS: TM implants exhibited less peri-implant bone loss than the control Ti implants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) demonstrate difficulties with aspects of executive function (EF) and adaptive behaviour across the lifespan. There is a current lack of information regarding how these difficulties relate to employment outcomes in adulthood. This study evaluated the adaptive behaviour and EF profiles of individuals with DS during early adulthood and the association between these areas of functioning and employment status. METHODS: Parents or caregivers of primarily young adults with DS (n = 31; mean chronological age = 25.9 years; SD = 5.92) completed the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales - Second Edition the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Adult version and a demographic questionnaire that requested information regarding adult employment status. RESULTS: Findings indicated a distinct pattern of relative strengths and challenges in adaptive behaviour and EF. In addition, the EF sub-domain of working memory was a significant predictor of employment status. CONCLUSIONS: Specific aspects of the DS cognitive profile may have an important influence on employment status in primarily young adults with DS. Implications for interventions are discussed.

AIMS: To determine the survival of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on cotton and polyester and the effectiveness of low-temperature laundering and detergents on the removal of micro-organism from healthcare laundry. METHODS AND RESULTS: Survival of E. coli and S. aureus on polyester or cotton was assessed over 3 weeks and the efficacy of a domestic wash (40 and 60°C) and a range of detergents was also determined. Both bacteria were able to survive on cotton (5 log(10) ) and polyester (0·28 log(10) ) for up to 3 weeks. Laundering at 40°C resulted in a 3·5 log(10) removal of the initial 7·7 log(10) inoculum and some cross-contamination to sterile fabrics (3 log(10) ). Increasing the temperature to 60°C resulted in the complete removal of the initial inoculum. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that most of the micro-organisms are removed at 40°C, however, those cells still remaining may have the potential for further contamination to the clinical environment and patients. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: National Health Service (NHS) nurses are required to domestically launder their uniforms at 60°C to ensure safe removal of micro-organisms, 33% of NHS staff questioned said they launder their uniforms at 40°C, which could potentially result in transmission of hospital-acquired infections.
