BACKGROUND: Breast Cancer (BC) is associated with substantial costs of healthcare; however, real-world data regarding these costs in Colombia is scarce. The contributory regime provides healthcare services to formal workers and their dependents and covers almost half of the population in Colombia. This study aims to describe the net costs of healthcare in women with BC covered by the contributory regime in Colombia in 2019 from the perspective of the Colombian Health System. METHODS: The main data source was the Capitation Sufficiency Database, an administrative database that contains patient-level data on consumption of services included in the National Formulary (PBS, in Spanish Plan de Beneficios en Salud). Data on consumption of services not included in the PBS (non-PBS) were calculated using aggregated data from MIPRES database. All direct costs incurred by prevalent cases of BC, from January 1 to December 31, 2019, were included in the analysis. The net costs of the disease were estimated by multiplying the marginal cost and the expected number of cases with BC by region and age group. Marginal costs were defined as the costs of services delivered to patients with BC after subtracting the expected costs of health services due to age, comorbidity burden or region of residence. To calculate these costs, we used Propensity Score Matching in the main analysis. All costs were expressed in 2019 international dollars. Productivity losses, transportation expenses, and caregiving costs were not included. RESULTS: A total of 46,148 patients with BC were identified. Total net costs were $387 million (95% CI $377 to $396 million), 60% associated with non-PBS services. Marginal costs were $8,366 (95% Confidence Interval $8,170 to $8,573), with substantial variations between regions age groups (from $3,919 for older patients in the Amazonia region to $10,070 for younger patients in the Pacific region). The costs for PBS services were higher for ambulatory services and for patients who died during 2020. CONCLUSIONS: BC imposes a substantial economic burden for the Colombian Health System with important variations in net costs between regions and age groups. Patients near death and ambulatory services were associated with higher costs of healthcare.

BACKGROUND: In the literature, there is no consensus regarding the surgical management of postaxial polydactyly, and few cases of polymetatarsia with polydactyly have been reported. Treatment of the complete deformity will prevent further foot and gait disorders. OBJECTIVE: To identify literature relevant to the operative management of Y-shaped metatarsal with biphalangeal sixth toe and related skin and wound care to improve surgical treatment protocols from a clinical experience perspective. DATA SOURCES: The authors searched several electronic databases in December 2022 for articles related to postaxial polysyndactyly in the feet and polymetatarsia. Databases searched included PubMed, SciELO, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Google Scholar gray literature. STUDY SELECTION: Two independent researchers conducted the searches and read the article titles and abstracts. Studies were included if they were narrative reviews, case studies, or observational studies; written in English or Spanish; and published between 2012 and 2022. Nonhuman studies were excluded. Studies that met the inclusion criteria were fully evaluated. Disagreements between reviewers were resolved by consensus, and when there was no consensus, a senior researcher was consulted. DATA EXTRACTION: The following data were extracted from the included studies using a standardized form: author and year of publication, study type, number of participants, sex, polydactyly location, polymetatarsia, type of polydactyly, participants' history of hereditary associated diseases or malformations, treatment, removal criteria, and timing of surgery. DATA SYNTHESIS: Authors evaluated 11 studies of postaxial polydactyly that included a total of 153 participants (64 men, 89 women). They also document their clinical experience with a surgical technique used in cases of bilateral postaxial polydactyly of the foot with a Y-shaped metatarsal with biphalangeal sixth toe. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical correction with lateral removal of the sixth toe is a resolutive treatment to improve the functionality of the foot, its aesthetic appearance, and the patient's quality of life. Case-specific treatment should be applied and tailored to meet the individual needs. The biomechanics of gait and shoe problems in these patients improve with surgical treatment, without presenting secondary aesthetic problems in skin care.

Microbes live within complex communities of interacting populations, either free-living in waters and soils or symbionts of animals and plants. Their interactions include the production of antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins) to antagonize competitors, and these producers must carry their own immunity gene for self-protection. Whether other coexisting populations are sensitive or resistant to the bacteriocin producer will be key for the population dynamics within the microbial community. The immunity gene frequently consists of an ABC transporter to repel its own bacteriocin but rarely protects against a nonrelated bacteriocin. A case where this cross-resistance occurs mediated by a shared ABC transporter has been shown between enterocins MR10A/B and AS-48. The first is an L50-like leaderless enterocin, while AS-48 is a circular enterocin. In addition, L50-like enterocins such as MR10A/B have been found in E. faecalis and E. faecium, but AS-48 appears only in E. faecalis. Thus, using the ABC transporter of the enterocin MR10A/B gene cluster of Enterococcus faecalis MRR10-3 as a cross-resistance model, we aimed to unravel to what extent a particular ABC transporter can be shared across multiple bacteriocinogenic bacterial populations. To this end, we screened the MR10A/B-ABC transporters in available microbial genomes and analyzed their sequence homologies and distribution. Overall, our main findings are as follows: (i) the MR10A/B-ABC transporter is associated with multiple enterocin gene clusters; (ii) the different enterocins associated with this transporter have a saposin-like fold in common; (iii) the Mr10E component of the transporter is more conserved within its associated enterocin, while the Mr10FGH components are more conserved within the carrying species. This is the least known component of the transporter, but it has shown the greatest specificity to its corresponding enterocin. Bacteriocins are now being investigated as an alternative to antibiotics; hence, the wider or narrower distribution of the particular immunity gene should be taken into account for clinical applications to avoid the selection of resistant strains. Further research will be needed to investigate the mechanistic interactions between the Mr10E transporter component and the bacteriocin as well as the specific ecological and evolutionary mechanisms involved in the spread of the immunity transporter across multiple bacteriocins.

Ledflex is a fluorometer adapted to measure chlorophyll fluorescence at the canopy level. It has been described in detail by Moya et al. (2019), Photosynthesis Research. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11120-019-00642-9 . We used this instrument to determine the effect of water stress on the fluorescence of a fescue field under extreme temperature and light conditions through a 12 days campaign during summer in a Mediterranean area. The fescue field formed part of a lysimeter station in "las Tiesas," near Albacete-Spain. In addition to the fluorescence data, the surface temperature was measured using infrared radiometers. Furthermore, "Airflex," a passive fluorometer measuring the filling-in of the atmospheric oxygen absorption band at 760 nm, was installed in an ultralight plane and flown during the most critical days of the campaign. We observed with the Ledflex fluorometer a considerable decrease of about 53% of the stationary chlorophyll fluorescence level at noon under water stress, which was well correlated with the surface temperature difference between the stressed and control plots. Airflex data also showed a decrease in far-red solar-induced fluorescence upon water stress in agreement with surface temperature data and active fluorescence measurements after correction for PS I contribution. Notwithstanding, the results from airborne remote sensing are not as precise as in situ active data.

The Metabolic Theory of Ecology (MTE) predicts that the temperature increases exert a common effect on organisms stimulating metabolic rates, this being stronger for a heterotrophic than for an autotrophic metabolism. However, no available studies within the MTE framework have focused on organisms' response under fluctuation at high temperature interacting with factors such as nutrient availability, or how this interaction could affect the coexistence between mixotrophic and strict autotrophic phytoplankton. Hence, we assess how the phytoplankton metabolism and species composition are affected under scenarios of high temperature and fluctuation at high temperature, and how nutrients alter the direction and magnitude of such impact. For that, we use a mixed culture composed of two phytoplankton species: a strict autotrophic species and a mixotrophic species. Our results indicate that, in agreement with the MTE, only fluctuation at high temperature treatment registered a greater activation energy (Ea) value for respiration than for primary production and stimulated mixotrophic over strict autotrophic species abundance compared to control treatment. Remarkably, fluctuation at high temperature had a strong negative impact on the total abundance of the mixed-culture. The interaction between nutrient enrichment and fluctuation at high temperature increased abundance of the strict autotrophic species and overall species abundance, and led to Ea values that were higher in primary production than in respiration. Changes in community composition, enhanced by nutrient enrichment, could be behind this response, which can have implications in ecosystem functioning in a changing world.

BACKGROUND: Stroke therapy has been transformed in recent years due to the availability of thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy (MT). Whether transferring the patient directly to a comprehensive stroke center (CSC, mothership model) is better than taking them to a primary stroke center (PSC) and then to a CSC for MT (drip and ship) is unclear but has important implications. We compared the performance of both models in a district of the Basque country, Spain. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data of all acute ischemic stroke patients consecutively admitted to the Neurology Department of two institutions and eligible for MT over a 36-month period with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO). One center applied the mothership model and the other the drip-and-ship. The two models were compared in terms of mortality and functional status assessed by modified Rankin (mRS) scale at 90 days. As a surrogate of the effectiveness of the two models, all times pertinent to stroke therapy were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 187 patients were evaluated subjected to MT with the drip-and-ship model and 188 with mothership, with a median NIHSS of 15. Prior to MT, 17% of the drip-and-ship patients received thrombolysis and 26% in the mothership. Neither mortality rate nor mRS showed statistically significant differences 90 days after stroke. The time lapse from stroke to MT was optimal in both models; albeit being 10 minutes longer in the drip-and-ship model, it had no impact on patients' outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Drip-and-ship and mothership models can provide optimal and similar results in acute stroke patients in terms of mortality and functional status at 90 days. Their coexistence may alleviate the burden of CSC thus facilitating the access of more stroke patients to advanced therapies in an equitable manner.

Background and Purpose: We aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of delayed neurological improvement (DNI) after complete endovascular reperfusion in anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: Retrospective analysis of an online multicenter prospective reperfusion registry of patients with consecutive anterior circulation AIS treated with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) from January 2018 to June 2019 in tertiary stroke centers of the NORDICTUS (NORD-Spain Network for Research and Innovation in ICTUS) network. We included patients with AIS with a proximal occlusion in whom a modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction 3 reperfusion pattern was obtained. DNI was defined if, despite absence of early neurological improvement during the first 24 hours, patients achieved functional independence on day 90. Clinical and radiological variables obtained before EVT were analyzed as potential predictors of DNI. Results: Of 1565 patients with consecutive AIS treated with EVT, 1381 had proximal anterior circulation occlusions, 803 (58%) of whom achieved a modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction 3. Of these, 628 patients fulfilled all selection criteria and were included in the study. Mean age was 73.8 years, 323 (51.4%) were female, and median baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was 16. Absence of early neurological improvement was observed in 142 (22.6%) patients; 32 of these (22.5%) achieved good long-term outcome and constitute the DNI group. Predictors of DNI in multivariable-adjusted logistic regression were male sex (odds ratio, 6.4 [95% CI, 2.1­22.3] P=0.002), lower pre-EVT National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (odds ratio, 1.4 [95% CI, 1.2­1.5], P<0.001), and intravenous thrombolysis (odds ratio, 9.1 [95% CI, 2.7­30.90], P<0.001). Conclusions: One-quarter of patients with anterior circulation AIS who do not clinically improve within the first 24 hours after complete cerebral endovascular recanalization will achieve long-term functional independence, regardless of the poor early clinical course. Male sex, lower initial clinical severity, and use of intravenous thrombolysis before EVT predicted this clinical pattern.

The signalling hypothesis suggests that avian eggshell coloration is a sexually selected female signal advertising her quality to its male partner, thereby stimulating his provisioning rate. This hypothesis has been tested for structural eggshell pigments, but not for cosmetic colorations, such as that produced by the uropygial secretion on eggshells. During the breeding season, female hoopoes (Upupa epops) host in their uropygial glands symbiotic bacteria. Females actively smear the eggshells with their secretion, protecting embryos from pathogenic trans-shell infections and changing eggshell coloration. Because the colour of the secretions is related to their antimicrobial potential, cosmetic eggshell coloration may act as a cue or even as a post-mating sexually selected signal if it affects male provisioning rates. To experimentally test this hypothesis, we cross-fostered already-smeared clutches between hoopoe nests, and quantified male feeding behaviour to females before and after the experiment. This approach allows disentanglement of the effects of female quality and of egg coloration on male investment. In accordance with the hypothesis, males adjusted their provisioning rate to the eggshell cosmetic coloration. This is, to our knowledge, the first experimental demonstration that egg colour stained with uropygial secretion could act as a post-mating sexual signal of female quality to males.

Mixotrophy combines autotrophy and phagotrophy in the same cell. However, it is not known to what extent the phagotrophy influences metabolism, cell composition, and growth. In this work, we assess, on the one hand (first test), the role of phagotrophy on the elemental and biochemical composition, cell metabolism, and enzymes related to C, N, and S metabolism of Isochrysis galbana Parke, 1949. On the other hand, we study how a predicted increase of phagotrophy under environmental conditions of low nutrients (second test) and low light (third test) can affect its metabolism and growth. Our results for the first test revealed that bacterivory increased the phosphorous and iron content per cell, accelerating cell division and improving the cell fitness; in addition, the stimulation of some C and N enzymatic routes help to maintain, to some degree, compositional homeostasis. Under nutrient or light scarcity, I. galbana grew more slowly despite greater bacterial consumption, and the activities of key enzymes involved in C, N, and S metabolism changed according to a predominantly phototrophic strategy of nutrition in this alga. Contrary to recent studies, the stimulation of phagotrophy under low nutrient and low irradiance did not imply greater and more efficient C flux.

OBJECTIVES: Meniere's disease (MD) is a rare inner ear disorder characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, episodic vertigo, and tinnitus. Familial MD has been reported in 6 to 9% of sporadic cases, and few genes including FAM136A, DTNA, PRKCB, SEMA3D, and DPT have been involved in single families, suggesting genetic heterogeneity. In this study, the authors recruited 46 families with MD to search for relevant candidate genes for hearing loss in familial MD. DESIGN: Exome sequencing data from MD patients were analyzed to search for rare variants in hearing loss genes in a case-control study. A total of 109 patients with MD (73 familial cases and 36 early-onset sporadic patients) diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria defined by the Barany Society were recruited in 11 hospitals. The allelic frequencies of rare variants in hearing loss genes were calculated in individuals with familial MD. A single rare variant analysis and a gene burden analysis (GBA) were conducted in the dataset selecting 1 patient from each family. Allelic frequencies from European and Spanish reference datasets were used as controls. RESULTS: A total of 5136 single-nucleotide variants in hearing loss genes were considered for single rare variant analysis in familial MD cases, but only 1 heterozygous likely pathogenic variant in the OTOG gene (rs552304627) was found in 2 unrelated families. The gene burden analysis found an enrichment of rare missense variants in the OTOG gene in familial MD. So, 15 of 46 families (33%) showed at least 1 rare missense variant in the OTOG gene, suggesting a key role in familial MD. CONCLUSIONS: The authors found an enrichment of multiplex rare missense variants in the OTOG gene in familial MD. This finding supports OTOG as a relevant gene in familial MD and set the groundwork for genetic testing in MD.

Mixotrophic protists combine phagotrophy and phototrophy within a single cell. Greater phagotrophic activity could reinforce the bypass of carbon (C) flux through the bacteria-mixotroph link and thus lead to a more efficient transfer of C and other nutrients to the top of the trophic web. Determining how foreseeable changes in temperature and UVR affect mixotrophic trade-offs in favor of one or the other nutritional strategy, along the mixotrophic gradient, is key to understanding the fate of carbon and mineral nutrients in the aquatic ecosystem. Our two main hypotheses were: (i) that increased warming and UVR will divert metabolism toward phagotrophy, and (ii) that the magnitude of this shift will vary according to the organism's position along the mixotrophic gradient. To test these hypotheses, we used two protists (Isochrysis galbana and Chromulina sp.) located in different positions on the mixotrophic gradient, subjecting them to the action of temperature and of UVR and their interaction. Our results showed that the joint action of these two factors increased the primary production:bacterivory ratio and stoichiometric values (N:P ratio) close to Redfield's ratio. Therefore, temperature and UVR shifted the metabolism of both organisms toward greater phototrophy regardless of the original position of the organism on the mixotrophic gradient. Weaker phagotrophic activity could cause a less efficient transfer of C to the top of trophic webs.

PURPOSE: Computerized posturography is the gold standard for balance assessment. Because of the great cost and dimensions of commercial equipments, low-cost and portable devices have been developed and validated, such as RombergLab, a software in open source term which works connected with a low-cost force platform. The objective of this study was to obtain normative posturography data using this software. METHODS: A multicentric prospective and descriptive study, with 350 healthy participants, was designed. Static postural stability (measured using the modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance) was evaluated using the software connected to the force platform. Using the confidence ellipse area (CEA) in each condition, global equilibrium score (GES) was calculated and adjusted for significant variable factors using cluster analysis. RESULTS: Mean (SD) GES was 0.72 (0.22). Age (p < 0.01), height (p < 0.01) and recruitment center (p < 0.05) were found as influence factors for GES. Cluster analysis obtained 16 groups stratified by age and height. GES decreases with age and height (p < 0.005). No significant interaction of age nor height was found with GES in these clusters (p > 0.05). After correction for height and age, GES was no longer influenced by the recruitment center (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: With the introduction of the global equilibrium score values of the present study into the software, we consider RombergLab v1.3 a reference posturography tool for healthy individuals. Further studies are needed for validating it as a suitable instrumented test for screening between healthy and pathologic subjects and its reliability over time for the follow-up of patients.

The objective of the research was to analyze children's conceptualization of death through drawings, using a mixed approach, which combines deductive and inductive qualitative analysis. The sample consisted of 99 children aged 9-11 years, who were asked to elaborate a drawing about their idea of death and to explain it to the researchers. Drawings were coded basing on Tamm and Granqvist's model (deductive analysis) and codes and categories were created and modified (inductive analysis). Three main categories were identified in the analysis and four sub-categories were modified and/or created: causes of death, good death, anxiety-fear and symbolization.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Experimental models of cerebral ischemia demonstrate that the decrease in the caveolin-1 membrane protein results in an increase in endothelial permeability. Because this phenomenon is responsible for hemorrhagic transformation (HT) after cerebral ischemia, we aimed to determine whether caveolin-1 levels may predict bleeding after recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (r-tPA) administration in patients with acute stroke. METHODS: We studied 133 patients with a first hemispheric stroke treated with r-tPA within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. HT was evaluated and classified on cranial computed tomography at 24 hours and was considered as symptomatic HT (sHT) if associated with neurological deterioration. Serum caveolin-1 levels were analyzed before and at 2, 24, and 72 hours post-r-tPA administration in patients and in 40 healthy controls. RESULTS: Baseline caveolin-1 levels were higher in patients than controls (0.24 [0.17-0.40] versus 0.07 [0.0-0.20] ng/mL; P<0.000). Twenty six (19.5%) patients had HT, which was symptomatic in 7 (5.3%). Patients with parenchymal hemorrhage-2 and sHT had lower baseline caveolin-1 levels than the rest of patients (0.08 [0.04-0.19] versus 0.26 [0.14-0.40]; P=0.019 and 0.08 [0.02-0.17] versus 0.26 [0.13-0.41]; P=0.019, respectively). The levels remained stable in the first 72 hours in patients with parenchymal hemorrhage-2 and sHT, whereas in the rest of patients levels decreased in this time. Caveolin-1 levels ≤0.17 ng/mL had the highest predictive capacity of sHT (86% sensitivity, 65% specificity, 99% negative predictive value, 12% positive predictive value). After adjustment for confounders, caveolin-1 levels ≤0.17 ng/mL independently predicted sHT (odds ratio, 11.6; 95% confidence interval, 11.3-102.8; P=0.027). CONCLUSIONS: Low serum levels of caveolin-1 are an independent predictor of sHT after r-tPA administration. Because of the small sample size, further research is needed to validate these data.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to assess through a questionnaire the features of vertiginous episodes, accompanying symptoms, familial history, and migraine precursors in a sample of 252 subjects with a diagnosis of definite vestibular migraine. BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common neurological disorder characterized by episodic headaches with specific features. About two-thirds of cases run in families, and patients may refer symptoms occurring in infancy and childhood, defined as episodic syndromes that may be associated with migraine. Migraine is associated with episodic vertigo, called vestibular migraine, whose diagnosis mainly relies on clinical history showing a temporary association of symptoms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional multicentric study, 252 subjects were recruited in different centers; a senior specialist through a structured questionnaire assessed features of vestibular symptoms and accompanying symptoms. RESULTS: The age of onset of migraine was 23 years, while onset of vertigo was at 38 years. One hundred and eighty-four subjects reported internal vertigo (73%), while 63 subjects (25%) reported external vertigo. The duration of vertigo attacks was less than 5 minutes in 58 subjects (23%), between 6 and 60 minutes in 55 (21.8%), between 1 and 4 hours in 29 (11.5%), 5 and 24 hours in 44 (17.5%), up to 3 days in 14 (5.5%), and more than 3 days in seven (2.8%); 14 subjects (5.5%) referred attacks lasting from less than 5 minutes and up to 1 hour, nine (3.6%) referred attacks lasting from less than 5 minutes and up to 1 to 4 hours, six (2.4%) referred attacks lasting from less than 5 minutes and up to 5 to 24 hours, and five (2%) cases referred attacks lasting from less than 5 minutes and up to days. Among accompanying symptoms, patients referred the following usually occurring, in order of frequency: nausea (59.9%), photophobia (44.4%), phonophobia (38.9%), vomiting (17.8%), palpitations (11.5%), tinnitus (10.7%), fullness of the ear (8.7%), and hearing loss (4%). In total, 177 subjects referred a positive family history of migraine (70.2%), while 167 (66.3%) reported a positive family history of vertigo. In the sample, 69% of patients referred at least one of the pediatric precursors, in particular, 42.8% of subjects referred motion sickness. The age of onset of the first headache was lower in the subsample with a familial history of migraine than in the total sample. Among the pediatric precursors, benign paroxysmal vertigo - BPV, benign paroxysmal torticollis, and motion sickness were predictive of a lower age of onset of vertigo in adulthood; cyclic vomiting was predictive for vomiting during vertigo attacks in adults. CONCLUSIONS: Our results may indicate that vestibular symptoms in pediatric patients may act as a predisposing factor to develop vestibular migraine at an earlier age in adulthood.

Introduction: Tobacco use is a public health problem causing high morbidity and mortality, including stroke. This study evaluates predictive factors of smoking cessation in the long term after stroke. Methods: We followed a cohort of 110 consecutive smokers with stroke for up to 6 years. Sociodemographic variables, stroke severity, insular involvement, stage of change in smoking habit before stroke and disruption of addiction variable (smoking cessation, absence of relapses, having stopped smoking without difficulties and not having had urge) were evaluated. Results: Twenty patients died during follow-up and two patients were lost leaving a final cohort of 88 patients. The prevalence of smoking cessation in the remaining population was 65.9% post-stroke, 54.9% at 3-6 months, 40.9% at 1 year and 37.5% at 6 years. Prevalence was significantly higher in patients with insular involvement during the first year of follow-up, but not at 6 years. Disruption immediately after stroke (OR = 10.1; 95% CI = 2.5 to 40.1) and intention to change before having the stroke (OR = 4.8; 95% CI = 1.0 to 23.0) were predictors of abstinence at 6 years after adjusting for age, sex and stroke severity at baseline. When tobacco abstinence at the 1 year follow-up was included in the model, this factor was the best predictor of tobacco abstinence at 1 year (OR = 10.5; 95% CI = 2.2 to 49.4). Conclusions: Intention of change, having the disruption criteria, and abstinence 1 year after stroke were predictors of abstinence at 6 years. An insular lesion in the acute phase of stroke does not determine the tobacco use status at 6 years. Implications: This study is the first prospective investigation with a cohort of stroke patients to examine the long-term influence of biological and psychological factors on smoking cessation. Tobacco abstinence 1 year after stroke was the strongest predictor of abstinence at 6 years of follow-up. The effect of the insular cortex lesion on tobacco cessation, which had been relevant during the first year, no longer had an influence over the longer period studied here.

Microbial symbiont acquisition by hosts may determine the effectiveness of the mutualistic relationships. A mix of vertical and horizontal transmission may be advantageous for hosts by allowing plastic changes of microbial communities depending on environmental conditions. Plasticity is well known for gut microbiota but is poorly understood for other symbionts of wild animals. We here explore the importance of environmental conditions experienced by nestling hoopoes (Upupa epops) during the late nesting phase determining microbiota in their uropygial gland. In cross-fostering experiments of 8 days old nestlings, "sibling-sibling" and "mother-offspring" comparisons were used to explore whether the bacterial community naturally established in the uropygial gland of nestlings could change depending on experimental environmental conditions (i.e., new nest environment). We found that the final microbiome of nestlings was mainly explained by nest of origin. Moreover, cross-fostered nestlings were more similar to their siblings and mothers than to their stepsiblings and stepmothers. We also detected a significant effect of nest of rearing, suggesting that nestling hoopoes acquire most bacterial symbionts during the first days of life but that the microbiome is dynamic and can be modified along the nestling period depending on environmental conditions. Estimated effects of nest of rearing, but also most of those of nest of origin are associated to environmental characteristics of nests, which are extended phenotypes of parents. Thus, natural selection may favor the acquisition of appropriated microbial symbionts for particular environmental conditions found in nests.

Ultrafast UV/Vis pump/probe experiments on ortho-, meta- and para-hydroxy-substituted azobenzenes (HO-ABs), as well as for sulfasalazine, an AB-based drug, were performed in aqueous solution. For meta-HO-AB, AB-like isomerisation behaviour can be observed, whereas, for ortho-HO-AB, fast proton transfer occurs, resulting in an excited keto species. For para-HO-AB, considerable keto/enol tautomerism proceeds in the ground state, so after excitation the trans-keto species isomerises into the cis form. Aided by TD-DFT calculations, insight is provided into different deactivation pathways for HO-AB, and reveals the role of hydroxy groups in the photochemistry of ABs, as well as their acetylation regarding sulfasalazine. Hydroxy groups are position-specific substituents for AB, which allow tuning of the timescale of thermal relaxation, as well as the amount and contribution of the keto species to photochemical processes.

Exploring factors guiding interactions of bacterial communities with animals has become of primary importance for ecologists and evolutionary biologists during the last years because of their likely central role in the evolution of animal life history traits. We explored the association between laying date and eggshell bacterial load (mesophilic bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococci, and Enterococci) in natural and artificial magpie (Pica pica) nests containing fresh commercial quail (Coturnix coturnix) eggs. We manipulated hygiene conditions by spilling egg contents on magpie and artificial nests and explored experimental effects during the breeding season. Egg breakage is a common outcome of brood parasitism by great spotted cuckoos (Clamator glandarius) on the nests of magpie, one of its main hosts. We found that the treatment increased eggshell bacterial load in artificial nests, but not in magpie nests with incubating females, which suggests that parental activity prevents the proliferation of bacteria on the eggshells in relation to egg breakage. Moreover, laying date was positively related to eggshell bacterial load in active magpie nests, but negatively in artificial nests. The results suggest that variation in parental characteristics of magpies rather than climatic variation during the breeding season explained the detected positive association. Because the eggshell bacterial load is a proxy of hatching success, the detected positive association between eggshell bacterial loads and laying date in natural, but not in artificial nests, suggests that the generalized negative association between laying date and avian breeding success can be, at least partially, explained by differential bacterial effects.

Consumer growth can be affected by imbalances between the nutrient content of the consumer and its food resource. Although ontogenetic-driven changes in animal composition are well documented, their potential consequences for the organism's sensitivity to food quality constraints have remained elusive. Here we show that the potential growth response of the copepod Mixodiaptomus laciniatus (as %RNA and RNA:DNA ratio) to the natural gradient of seston carbon (C) : nutrient ratio is unimodal and stage specific. Solution of the equation given by the first derivative function provided the optimum C : nutrient ratio for maximum stage-specific growth, which increased during ontogeny. The peakedness of the function indicated that animal vulnerability to suboptimal food quality decreased as juveniles reached adulthood. Consistent with these results, a field experiment demonstrated that potential consumer growth responded to variations in seston C: phosphorus ratio, and that early life stages were particularly vulnerable to suboptimal food quality.
