RESUMEN

Coronary artery diseases are one of the high-risk diseases, which occur due to the insufficient blood supply to the heart. The different types of plaques formed inside the artery leads to the blockage of the blood stream. Understanding the type of plaques along with the detection and classification of plaques supports in reducing the mortality of patients. The objective of this study is to present a novel clustering method of plaque segmentation followed by wavelet transform based feature extraction. The extracted features of all different kinds of calcified and sub calcified plaques are applied to first train and test three machine learning classifiers including support vector machine, random forest and decision tree classifiers. The bootstrap ensemble classifier then decides the best classification result through a voting method of three classifiers. A training dataset including 64 normal CTA images and 73 abnormal CTA images is used, while a testing dataset consists of 111 normal CTA images and 103 abnormal CTA images. The evaluation metrics shows better classification rate and accuracy of 97.7%. The Sensitivity and Specificity rates are 97.8% and 97.5%, respectively. As a result, our study results demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of developing and applying this new image processing and machine learning scheme to assist coronary artery plaque detection and classification.

In this paper, early detection of schizophrenia types such as hallucination and delusion propose through the high Q-factor of RADWT in EEG signal acquired during the cognitive task of the patient. The earlier diagnose obtains from the energy distribution of the EEG signal in the high resolution via optimum tuning in dilation factor,which influences the Q-factor, redundancy and ringing in the EEG signal. The early detection of type of schizophrenia prevents the illness progression and lifelong disease. In existing clinical trial, the psych clinician diagnose only the schizophrenia disease through the standard DSM screening question and Prodromal signs checklist according to the standard of American Psychiatric Association. Furthermore, clinician tries to diagnose the disease through brain imaging and EEG signal. However, procedure in the diagnosis of Schizophrenia possible only in the acute stage, minimum after 2 years of illness progression and still sub classification of the type of schizophrenia is a challenging task. In the proposed system, we acquire EEG signal during the three conditions such as reverse counting of the number, screening questions (DSM), and eye rest state with a distance of 1-m part of the clinician and patient to analyse cognitive behaviour. From the result of 25 patients EEG, signal during cognitive task show the different sub band energy pattern in RADWT to distinguish hallucination and delusion patient exactly for 21 patients and provide 84% of accuracy in sub-classification of type schizophrenia.

PURPOSE: Alteration and overexpression of HER2 proto-oncogene have been implicated in the carcinogenesis and prognosis of ovarian cancer. We evaluated this hypothesis among women with ovarian carcinoma patients from Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India. METHODS: Genomic DNA was extracted from 72 case patients and 288 control subjects and was examined for I655V polymorphism by PCR-RFLP based assay. Immunohistochemistry analysis was carried out in order to study the overexpression of HER2 protein. The observed number of each genotype was compared with that expected for a population in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In analysing the relation between genotype and overexpression of HER2 protein, Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel statistics was used. RESULTS: We found that 20.8% of the case patients and 16.3% of the control subjects were heterozygous for the Val allele and 10 case patients (13.8%) and 3 control subjects (1.1%) were homozygous for this allele (P < 0.001). Compared with women with Ile/Ile genotype, women with Val/Val genotype had an elevated risk of ovarian cancer. The genotype distributions were consistent with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The risk increased with the number of Val allele and women homozygous for the Val allele had 15-fold (OR = 15.3; 95%CI = 4.09-57.31) increased risk of cancer. The patients homozygous for the Valine allele showed strong HER2 protein expression. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the valine allele may be an indicator of genetic susceptibility to ovarian carcinoma in the study population.

The current research is focused to address the implementation of nanobubbles technology to antibacterial agents against Staphylococcus aureus infections. Nanobubbles technology is a novel, latest research employed in many medical fields including drug discovery. In this present work, supramolecular nanoliquid formulation of potential antiseptic agent chloroxylenol-based Dettol and its enhanced antibacterial activity, biocompatibility assessment was studied. Nanobubble technology was adopted to prepare nanoformulation (NB-D) using a household hand mixer under thermostatically controlled conditions. A high-stability nanoformulation with high potential antibacterial activity against human pathogenic strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus was produced by the nanobubbles created in the antiseptic solution. The overall vitality of both strains was significantly reduced in all dose tests on NB-D treatment as a result of the antibacterial activity as assessed by the well-diffusion assay, turbidometric microdilution assay, biofilm inhibition assay, and total count reduction assay. Biocompatibility of the NB-D formulation was studied by the determination of cytotoxicity against HaCaT-human keratinocytes and hemocytes. NB-D treatment did not induce any notable cytotoxic effect on HaCaT cells by showing none of the changes in cell morphology and architecture. No toxic effect on the hematocytes was observed in NB-D treatment. The enhanced antibacterial activity and best biocompatibility of NB-D result shows that the nanobubble technology could be used as an effective strategy for the formulation of antiseptics or disinfectants against high health risk infectious organisms. The novelty of the work is the formation of supramolecular nanoformulation on antiseptic agent which promised the results enhanced than the raw antiseptic agent.

Alzheimer's disease contributes to 60-70% of all dementia cases in the general population. Belonging to the BIN1/amphiphysin/RVS167 (BAR) superfamily, the bridging integrator (BIN1) has been identified to impact two major pathological hallmarks in Alzheimer's disease (AD), i.e., amyloid beta (Aß) and tau accumulation. Aß accumulation is found to increase by BIN1 knockdown in cortical neurons in late-onset AD, due to BACE1 accumulation at enlarged early endosomes. Two BIN1 mutants, KR and PL, were identified to exhibit Aß accumulation. Furthermore, BIN1 deficiency by BIN1-related polymorphisms impairs the interaction with tau, thus elevating tau phosphorylation, altering synapse structure and tau function. Even though the precise role of BIN1 in the neuronal tissue needs further investigation, the authors aim to throw light on the potential of BIN1 and unfold its implications on tau and Aß pathology, to aid AD researchers across the globe to examine BIN1, as an appropriate target gene for disease management.

We sought to analyse the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV), Chlamydia trachomatis and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in women with epithelial ovarian carcinomas. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection of microbial infections was carried out. A total of 39 tissue samples were analysed with consensus and type-specific primers for HPV, primers specific for the cryptic plasmid of Chlamydia and primers for glycoprotein B of CMV. The samples analysed showed 40%, 80% and 50% positivity for HPV, Chlamydia and CMV infection, respectively, in cancerous ovarian tissues. The HPV type detected was HPV 6, with its genome integrated to the host genome in case of both invasive and borderline tumours and existed episomally in healthy controls. The patients with Chlamydia (odds ratio [OR] 32; 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.33, 307.65) and CMV infection (OR 8; 95% CI 0.888, 72.10) are at significantly higher risk of development of ovarian tumours. The present study validates the theory of chronic infections and inflammation in the pathogenesis of epithelial ovarian cancer. Further seroepidemiological studies and large fresh tissue sampling may represent the real prevalence of infections among ovarian carcinoma patients. This study is the first of its kind in detecting the bacterial and viral aetiologies in the development of ovarian carcinoma among Indian women.

To evaluate the antihyperglycemic effect of ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract of Stereospermum suaveolens in streptozotocin-(STZ-) induced diabetic rats by acute and subacute models. In this paper, various fractions of ethanol extract of Stereospermum suaveolens were prepared and their effects on blood glucose levels in STZ-induced diabetic rats were studied after a single oral administration (200 mg/kg). Administration of the ethyl acetate fraction at 200 mg/kg once daily for 14 days to STZ-induced diabetic rats was also carried out. The parameters such as the fasting blood glucose, hepatic glycogen content, and pancreatic antioxidant levels were monitored. In the acute study, the ethyl acetate fraction is the most potent in reducing the fasting serum glucose levels of the STZ-induced diabetic rats. The 14-day repeated oral administration of the ethyl acetate fraction significantly reduced the fasting blood glucose and pancreatic TBARS level and significantly increased the liver glycogen, pancreatic superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities as well as reduced glutathione levels. The histopathological studies during the subacute treatment have been shown to ameliorate the STZ-induced histological damage of pancreas. This paper concludes that the ethyl acetate fraction from ethanol extract of Stereospermum suaveolens possesses potent antihyperglycemic and antioxidant properties, thereby substantiating the use of plant in the indigenous system of medicine.

BACKGROUND: Composing of less than 1% of all ovarian cancers, immature teratoma is a malignancy that mainly affects the young, and they present with advanced disease. The treatment of immature teratoma is conservative primary surgery usually involving unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy followed by combination chemotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of a 68 year old woman with bilateral ovarian teratoma complicated with carcinosarcoma. The patient was diagnosed as FIGO stage IIIC. She underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval cytoreduction followed by optimal cytoreduction. The post operative management strategies and gynaecological follow up studies revealed no evidence of regional or distant metastasis. CONCLUSION: Thus the choice of initial treatment should be decided in a selective fashion depending on various prognostic factors in order to increase the survival of the patients.

This study is intended to examine the ignition characteristics of a cashew nut shell biodiesel (C100) along with ethyne (acetylene) as a dual fuel in a diesel engine. Cashew nut shell oil is employed in this study owing to non-toxic nature, free from sulphur, biodegradable, and free of aromatics. Ethyne gas was introduced at different flow rate of 2, 4, 6 litres per minute (lpm). Experimental results revealed that duel fuelling ethyne gas to base fuel (C100) at 6 lpm reduce 18.1% CO, 9.7% HC, 6.87% Smoke with 11.1% increase in NOx emissions. Higher thermal efficiency was observed for ethyne-biodiesel mixture than neat biodiesel in all flow rates. Furthermore, the heat release and peak pressure were enhanced by duel fuelling ethyne gas to base fuel (C100).

Anterior cervical location of arachnoid cyst is a rare and only 22 cases have been reported in the literature. The surgical approach was quite varied and mostly these cysts were accessed via dorsal laminectomy, with few patients developing postoperative neurological deficit. We report a 51-year-old male with a cervical arachnoid cyst extending from the dens to the inferior border of the C3 body, which was successfully decompressed via an anterior cervical approach through the partial corpectomy of C2. This is probably the first case report demonstrating the safety of anterior partial median corpectomy of the C2 body with micro discectomy of C2-C3 space for excision of the anterior cervical archnoid cyst. The additional advantage of this procedure is that it may not result in spinal instability.

A 47-year-old man presented with epigastric pain relieved by bilious vomiting since one month. He had undergone truncal vagotomy with posterior gastrojejunostomy for benign gastric outlet obstruction 2 years ago. Endoscopy showed distension and stasis in the afferent loop, bile gastritis and esophagitis. Laparoscopic Braun jejunojejunostomy relieved his symptoms.

The present study was aimed to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic efficacy of Murraya koenigii in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of ethanolic extract of M. koenigii at a dose of 200 mg/kg/ b.w./day for a period of 30 days significantly decreased the levels of blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, urea, uric acid and creatinine in diabetic treated group of animals. Determination of plasma insulin level revealed the insulin stimulatory effect of the extract. The results suggest that M. koenigii possesses statistically significant hypoglycemic potential in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The M. koenigii extract appeared to be more effective than glibenclamide, a known antidiabetic drug.

The obtained data are related to the research article "Heavy Metal Assessment in Sediment Samples Collected From Pattipulam to Dhevanampattinam along the East Coast of Tamil Nadu Using EDXRF Technique" (Chandramohan et al., 2016) [1]. Chemical data are collected from Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF). Furthermore, the obtained chemical data describes it in more detail in the figures.

We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of activin B in discriminating tubal ectopic pregnancy (tEP) from intrauterine miscarriages (IUM), and normal viable intrauterine pregnancy (IUP). We included 28 women with tEP, 31 women with IUM, and 29 normal IUP, confirmed both by clinical examination and ultrasonography. Serum activin B concentration was measured at the time of admission using the ELISA kit. The median serum activin B concentration was found to be significantly decreased in both tEP (p=0.004) and IUM (p=0.022) compared to normal IUP. When compared between tEP and IUM, activin B concentrations did not differ significantly. ROC analysis of activin B and free ß-hCG demonstrated AUC of 0.722 and 0.805, respectively to discriminate tEP from viable IUP. The model including both activin B and free ß-hCG improved the discriminating potential with greater AUC (0.824), and specificity (93%) than individual one. To discriminate tEP from IUM, activin B, free ß-hCG and combination of both performed poorly. We conclude that serum activin B concentration is lower in tubal ectopic pregnancy, and can discriminate it from normal pregnancy with moderate accuracy. It also shows improved diagnostic potential along with free ß-hCG, but cannot distinguish tEP from IUM reliably.

Ethanol extract of Terminalia pallida Brandis. (EETP) was evaluated for its anti-ulcer activity against various models of ulcers, such as drug-induced ulcers, histamine-induced ulcers and ethanol-induced ulcers in Swiss albino rats. The EETP at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg per os (p.o.) exhibited significant protection against ulcers produced by indomethacin, histamine and the effect was comparable to that of the reference drug famotidine (30 mg/kg b.w) orally. The extract also afforded significant protection against ethanol-induced gastric ulceration. Meanwhile, EETP significantly lowered the elevated lipid peroxide level (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)) and restored the altered glutathione level in ethanol-induced gastric ulceration. The present investigation revealed that the EETP exhibited significant anti-ulcer activity by enhancing antioxidant potential of the gastric mucosa, thereby reducing mucosal damage.

Stereospermum suaveolens is a folk remedy for the treatment of diabetes and liver disorders in southern parts of India. In the present study, the protective effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract from S. suaveolens against hepatic oxidative stress was evaluated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats for 14 days. The ethyl acetate fraction was administered orally to the STZ diabetic rats at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg. Blood glucose level was measured according to glucose oxidase method. In order to determine hepatoprotective activity, changes in the levels of serum biomarker enzymes such as aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and serum alkaline phosphatase (SALP) were assessed in the ethyl acetate fraction treated diabetic rats and were compared with the levels in diabetic control rats. In addition, the antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate fraction was evaluated using various hepatic parameters such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). It was found that administration of ethyl acetate fraction (200 and 400 mg/kg) produced a significant (P < 0.001) fall in fasting blood glucose level, TBARS, bilirubin, AST, ALT, and SALP, while elevating the GSH levels, and SOD and CAT activities in diabetic rats. Histopathologic studies also revealed the protective effect of ethyl acetate fraction on the liver tissues of diabetic rats. It was concluded from this study that the ethyl acetate fraction from ethanol extract of S. suaveolens modulates the activity of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants and enhances the defense against hepatic oxidative stress in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

BACKGROUND: Fructose is widely used as a food ingredient and has potential to increase oxidative stress. Moreover, the beneficial health effects of medicinal plants are frequently attributed to their potent antioxidant effects. OBJECTIVES: The present study was aimed to explore the effects of garlic (Allium sativum) extract on insulin resistance, inflammation and oxidative stress in male wistar rats fed with high fructose diet. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Diabetes was induced in male albino Wistar rats by feeding 60% fructose rich diet. The fasting plasma glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, tumour necrosis factor alpha, total antioxidant status and the whole blood reduced glutathione, erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities were measured. Differences between the groups were assessed by using One Way Analysis of Variance with (ANOVA) Tukey post-hoc test. RESULTS: The diabetic rats showed a significant increase in plasma fasting glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, tumour necrosis factor alpha and malondialdehyde level and decreased levels of total antioxidant status, reduced glutathione, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Treatment with garlic extract restored all these biochemical changes. CONCLUSION: The garlic extract is effective in improving the high fructose induced oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin resistance in male wistar rats.

Bis(1,10-phenanthroline/2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(II)complexes containing TCP, TTZ OPBI, and BTSC ligands (where, TCP = 1-thiocarbamoyl-3,5-diphenyl-2-pyrazoline, TTZ = 2-(3,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydropyrazol-1-yl)-4-phenylthiazole, OPBI = 2-hydroxyphenyl benzimidazole and BTSC = benzoin thiosemicarbazone) have been prepared and characterized. The spectral data suggested that the ligands were coordinated with the metal through nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen atoms. The target complexes were tested in vivo for anticancer activity against transplantable murine tumor cell line, Ehrlich's Ascitic Carcinoma (EAC). All these complexes increased the life span of the EAC-bearing mice, decreased their tumor volume and viable ascitic cell count as well as improved Hb, RBC and WBC counts. These results suggest that the Ru(II) complexes exhibit significant antitumor activity in EAC-bearing mice. It was also observed that the ruthenium complexes protected red blood cells from 2,2'-azo-bis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)- induced hemolysis. The inhibitory effect was dose-dependent at a concentration of 20-120 microg/ml.
