RESUMEN

Forest soil harbors diverse microbial communities with decisive roles in ecosystem processes. Vegetation shift from needleleaf to broadleaf species is occurring across the globe due to climate change and anthropogenic activities, potentially change forest soil microbial communities and C cycle. However, our knowledge on the impact of such vegetation shift on soil microbial community and activities, and its consequences on forest soil C dynamics are still not well established. Here, we examined the seasonal variation of soil CO2 emission, soil extracellular enzyme activities (EEAs), and soil bacterial, fungal communities in subtropical forest from broadleaf, needleleaf, and mixed stands. In addition, soil CO2 emission and soil EEAs were measured in temperate forest during the growing season. Soil organic matter (SOM) content significantly differs between broadleaf and needleleaf forests and primarily distinguish various soil chemical and microbial characteristics. Significantly higher EEAs and soil CO2 emission in broadleaf forest compared to needleleaf forest were observed both in subtropical and temperate forests. The relative abundance of Basidiomycota positively correlated with SOM and EEAs and indirectly increase soil CO2 emission whereas the relative abundance of Ascomycota exhibits opposite trend, suggesting that soil fungal communities play a key role in determining the different microbial activities between broadleaf and needleleaf stands. The temperature sensitivity of soil CO2 emission was significantly higher in broadleaf forest compared to needleleaf forest, further suggesting that the soil organic carbon in broadleaf forests is more vulnerable to warming.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a primary regulator of the forest-climate feedback. However, its indicative capability for the soil CH4 sink is poorly understood due to the incomplete knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, SOC is not explicitly included in the current model estimation of the global forest CH4 sink. Here, using in-situ observations, global meta-analysis, and process-based modeling, we provide evidence that SOC constitutes an important variable that governs the forest CH4 sink. We find that a CH4 sink is enhanced with increasing SOC content on regional and global scales. The revised model with SOC function better reproduces the field observation and estimates a 39% larger global forest CH4 sink (24.27 Tg CH4 yr-1) than the model without considering SOC effects (17.46 Tg CH4 yr-1). This study highlights the role of SOC in the forest CH4 sink, which shall be factored into future global CH4 budget quantification.

Korean oak wilt (KOW) is vectored by the beetle Platypus koryoensis (Murayama) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a native species of Korea, whose dispersal distance is a key factor determining the spread of damage by KOW. To estimate dispersal distance at stand level, we conducted a mark-release-recapture (MRR) experiment and validated its results using an independent data. Sticky traps were attached to the trunks of oak trees up to 48.8 m from the release point. Beetles were marked with different three fluorescent powders by date and released, and the number of recaptured beetles was counted 90 min after release. To validate the flight distance, annual mean dispersal distance of P. koryoensis population was analyzed using GPS coordinates of oak trees with the symptom of KOW recorded in the field from 2012 to 2014 in independent oak stands that have been damaged by KOW since 2012. The beetles were recaptured only on the day they were released, suggesting that the beetles only make one flight. The percentage of recaptured beetles was 6.0 ± 1.6%. The mean dispersal distance was 18.0 ± 1.3 m, and more than 85% of recaptured beetles were caught within 25 m. Annual movement distances in infested stands were 24.1 and 19.9 m from 2012 to 2013 and 2013 to 2014, respectively, similar to the dispersal distance obtained from our MRR experiment. Our results showed that the dispersal distance of P. koryoensis estimated by MRR is a useful process for predicting the spread of areas damaged by KOW.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop a comprehensive cognitive rehabilitation program that can be easily applied to brain injured patients by family members or nurses in community or hospital settings. METHODS: A Systemic literature review design was used. Thirty-three related studies were reviewed. RESULT: Based on the results of the literature review, the training tasks for attention were designated to enhancing 4 hierarchical areas, i.e., focused, selective, alternating, and divided attention. On the other hand, the memory rehabilitation tasks mainly consisted of mnemonic skills, such as the association method which helps patients memorize given information by linking together common attributes, the visual imagery method, and self-instruction method. The problem solving rehabilitation program included a task of games or plays which stimulated the patients' curiosity and interest. The training tasks for problem solving were to encourage the process of deriving reasonable solutions for a problematic situation resembling real problems that the patients were faced with in their everyday life. CONCLUSION: It is expected that the cognitive rehabilitation program developed from this study could help patients having difficulty in their every day life, due to a reduced cognitive ability resulting from brain injury, to effectively adapt to every day life.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to use meta-analysis to analyze result of 17 studies which investigated the effects of integrated programs, and 11 studies which examined the effects of exercise programs on pain, depression, and disability. The 28 studies analyzed in this work were selected from the following sources: MEDLINE Search, bibliographies of related studies, main academic journals of nursing in Korea, and journals on arthritis issues. For the analysis of the data, homogeneity of effect sizes which were calculated based on data in the 28 studies was tested and its average effect size was computed by using meta analysis software package which was developed by Song(1992, 1998). the results can be summarized as follows: 1) Homogeneity tests were conducted on integrated programs on pain. In the preliminary homogeneity tests on effect size of all 17 studies, no homogeneity was found. When homogeneity tests on the effect size of the remaining 15 studies were performed, excluding two studies which had extremely larger effect size compared to other studies, the 15 studies were found to be homogeneous(Q=16.38, p=.23). The obtained average effect size, D(Mean Standardized Difference Between Means), was .25. When homogeneity tests on effect size on pain was conducted for the exercise programs, effect size for all nine studies wee found to be homogeneous(Q=7.42, p=.49) and the average effect size D=.30. Therefore, Hypothesis 1 was rejected from the results, that an average effect size of the integrated programs in pain was not significantly different from that of the exercise programs in pain. 2) Since only two studies investigated the effect of exercise programs n depression, comparison between the average effect size of integrated programs on depression could not be tested. Thereby, only the average effect size of integrated programs in depression was obtained. Eight studies wee tested to be positive on the homogeneity of effect sizes(Q=18.31, p=.02) at alpha <.01 and its average effect size was D=.11. 3) For the analysis of integrated program on disability, 13 studies, except for four which had an extremely large effect size compared to the others were found to be homogeneous at alpha <.01(Q=22.30, p=.04) and the average effect size on disability was D=.16. for analysis of the exercise programs on disability, eight studies, except for one which had an extremely large effect size compared to others, were found to be homogeneous(Q=7.87, p=.34) and the average effect size on disability was D=.60. Therefore, Hypothesis 3 was accepted from the results that an average effect size of exercise programs n disability was significantly larger than that of integrated programs in disability.
