RESUMEN

The current study aimed to explore the protective factors and underlying mechanisms associated with loneliness and psychological distress among older Chinese adults within the framework of a longitudinal design. This investigation specifically focused on the mediating role of attitudes toward own aging (ATOA) in the relationship between social support and the experience of loneliness and psychological distress (comprising depression, anxiety, and stress) amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. A cohort of 345 elderly individuals (mean age = 83.84 years, standard deviation = 8.49 years; 55.1% females) participated in this research endeavor. The participants were required to complete self-report instruments measuring their perceived levels of social support at Time 1 (T1), attitudes towards own aging, ATOA at Time 2 (T2), and their experiences of loneliness, and psychological distress (including depression, anxiety, and stress) at T1 and Time 3 (T3). The data collection timeline encompassed baseline data collection at T1 in September 2020, a subsequent six-month follow-up at T2 in March 2021, and a one-year follow up at T3 in September 2021. The findings of this investigation unveiled a negative predictive relationship between social support at T1 and psychological distress (encompassing depression, anxiety, and stress) at T3. Furthermore, it was discerned that ATOA at T2 acted as a mediating mechanism, elucidating the longitudinal association between social support at T1 and the manifestation of loneliness and psychological distress (including depression, anxiety, and stress) at T3. The discussion section of this paper delves into an exploration of the limitations and implications inherent in these conclusions, particularly concerning their relevance to potential intervention strategies.

RESUMEN

Primary autoimmune cerebellar ataxia (PACA) is an idiopathic sporadic cerebellar ataxia that is thought to be immune-mediated but lacks biomarkers or a known cause. Here, we report two cases of immune-mediated cerebellar ataxia that responded favorably to immunotherapy, in which tissue-based indirect immunofluorescence test for serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples yielded positive results. Case 1 was a 78-year-old man who presented with subacute progressive gait ataxia with truncal instability and dysarthria in response to steroids. Case 2 was a 62-year-old man who presented with relapses and remissions of acute progressive cerebellar ataxia occurring 1-2 times per year. Despite a favorable response to steroid treatment, he relapsed repeatedly in the absence of long-term immunosuppression. In the case of "idiopathic" cerebellar ataxia, immune-mediated causes should be investigated, and immunotherapy may have therapeutic effects.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of frailty among candidates and recipients of kidney transplantation (KT) is well-established, yet the impact of frailty on clinical outcomes following KT remains uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis to comprehensively assess the aforementioned relationship. METHODS: The present study conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to identify relevant observational studies that compared mortality risk and other clinical outcomes of KT recipients with and without frailty. Two authors independently conducted data collection, literature searching, and statistical analysis. The results were synthesized using a heterogeneity-incorporating random-effects model. RESULTS: In this meta-analysis, 6279 patients from 13 cohort studies were included, and 1435 patients (22.9%) were with frailty before KT. There were higher mortality rates among frail patients at admission, compared to those without frailty (risk ratio [RR]: 1.97, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.57 to 2.47, p < 0.001; I2 = 19%). Subgroup analysis suggested the association between frailty and high mortality risk after KT was consistent in studies of frailty assessed via Physical Frailty Phenotype or other methods, and in studies of follow-up duration < or ≥ 5 years. In addition, frailty was associated with higher incidence of delayed graft function (RR: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.21 to 2.61, p = 0.003; I2 = 0%), postoperative complications (RR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.15 to 3.08, p = 0.01; I2 = 0%), and longer hospitalization (RR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.22 to 1.97, p < 0.001; I2 = 0%). CONCLUSION: Following KT, frail patients are at higher risks for all-cause mortality, delayed graft function, postoperative complications, and longer hospital stays.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients with nonmetastatic pT3-4 colon cancers are prone to develop metachronous peritoneal carcinomatosis (mPC). Risk factors for mPC and the influence of mutant kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene (KRAS)/neuroblastoma rat sarcoma (NRAS)/v-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 (BRAF) and DNA mismatch repair (MMR) status on mPC remain to be described in these patients. METHOD: All enrolled patients were identified from the prospectively collected colorectal cancer database of a tertiary referral hospital between 2013 and 2018. Multivariate analysis was used to identify risk factors associated with mPC. RESULTS: Of the 1689 patients with nonmetastatic pT3-4 colon carcinoma, 8.4% (142/1689) progressed to mPC. Endoscopic obstruction (HR = 3.044, p < 0.001), elevated CA125 (HR = 1.795, p = 0.009), pT (T4a vs. T3, HR = 2.745, p < 0.001; T4b vs. T3, HR = 3.167, p = 0.001), pN (N1 vs. N0, HR = 2.592, p < 0.001; N2 vs. N0, HR = 4.049, p < 0.001), less than 12 lymph nodes harvested (HR = 2.588, p < 0.001), mucinous or signet ring cell carcinoma (HR = 1.648, p = 0.038), perineural invasion (HR = 1.984, p < 0.001), and adjuvant chemotherapy (HR = 1.522, p = 0.039) were strongly related to mPC but that mutant KRAS/NRAS/BRAF and MMR status was not associated with mPC. CONCLUSION: This study identified the high-risk factors for mPC in patients with nonmetastatic pT3-4 colon carcinoma, and these factors should be considered in selective preventive therapy and close follow-up for patients subsequently deemed to have high risk for mPC.

RESUMEN

Melatonin is known to involve multiple physiological actions in plants. Herein, we found that exogenous melatonin inhibited the Arabidopsis seedling growth through the elevated abscisic acid (ABA) levels, and the elevated ABA was ascribed to the upregulation of 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase genes (NCEDs) in the ABA biosynthesis pathway. We also found that the overexpression lines of the melatonin receptor gene PMTR1 (also known as Cand2) yielded smaller seeds and germinated slower than the wild type, whereas PMTR1-knockout mutants produced larger seeds and germinated faster than the wild type. During the seed development, the accumulation peak of ABA was higher in the PMTR1-knockout mutant, while it was lower in the PMTR1-overexpression line than that in the wild type. In the dry seeds and imbibed seeds, the PMTR1-overexpression line accumulated higher ABA levels, while the PMTR1-knockout contained less ABA than the wild type. In summary, our findings suggest that PMTR1 is involved in ABA-mediated seed development and germination in Arabidopsis.

RESUMEN

All-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs, CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, and I) show outstanding application prospects in the field of photoelectric devices. In recent years, the development of PQDs has greatly improved their stability to water, oxygen, and light. However, thermal quenching of PQDs greatly limits their practical application. Herein, we embed PQDs into ATiO3 (A = Ca, Ba, and Sr) of three different mesoporous spherical structures to explore the effect on thermal quenching of PQDs. Because of the unique mesoporous hollow microsphere structure and low thermal conductivity of SrTiO3, it can effectively block the heat transfer and improve the thermal quenching of PQDs. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of CsPbBr3@SrTiO3 composites is 72.6% of the initial intensity after heating to 120 °C. Moreover, the PL intensity of CsPbBr3@SrTiO3 composites remains about 80% of the initial value even when stored in air for 20 days or irradiated by 365 nm UV light for 48 h. A neutral white light-emitting diode is assembled by a blue chip, CsPbBr3@SrTiO3 composites, and red phosphor of K2SiF6:Mn4+, which has a color temperature of 5389 K and a color gamut covered 133% of National Television Standards Committee (NTSC).

RESUMEN

In this study, we aimed to compare the metabolic outcomes, renal function, and survival outcomes of simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation (SPK) and kidney transplantation alone (KTA) among end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Patients with ESKD and T2DM who underwent KTA (n = 85) or SPK (n = 71) in a transplant center were retrospectively reviewed. Metabolic profiles, renal function, and survival outcomes were assessed repeatedly at different follow-up time points. Propensity score procedures were applied to enhance between-group comparability. The levels of renal and metabolic outcomes between SPK and KTA over time were examined and analyzed using mixed-model repeated-measures approaches. The median follow-up period was 1.8 years. Compared with KTA, SPK resulted in superior metabolic outcomes and renal function, with lower levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; P = 0.0055), fasting blood glucose (P < 0.001), triglyceride (P = 0.015), cholesterol (P = 0.0134), low-density lipoprotein (P = 0.0161), and higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; P < 0.001). SPK provided better metabolic outcomes and renal function. The survival outcomes of the recipients and grafts were comparable between the two groups.

RESUMEN

Single-atom Co catalyst Co-Tpy-C with well-defined sites is synthesized by pyrolysis of a Co terpyridine (Tpy) organometallic complex. The Co-Tpy-C catalyst exhibits excellent activity for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction in aqueous electrolyte, with CO faradaic efficiency (FE) of over 95% from -0.7 to -1.0 V (vs RHE). By comparison, catalysts without Co or Tpy ligand added do not show any high CO FE. When simulated flue gas with 15% of CO2 is used as the source of CO2 , CO FE is kept at 90.1% at -0.5 V versus RHE. During gas phase flow electrolysis using simulated flue gas, the CO partial current density is further increased to 86.4 mA cm-2 and CO FE reached >90% at the cell voltage of 3.4 V. Experiments and density functional theory calculations indicate that uniform single-atom Co-N4 sites mainly contribute to the high activity for CO2 reduction.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: CYP1A1 rs1048943 polymorphism was reported to be correlated with periodontitis; however, its association with aggressive periodontitis (AgP) has not yet been investigated. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between the CYP1A1 gene rs1048943 variant with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) and platelet activation and analyse whether its interaction with hyperlipidemia affects periodontal status in a Chinese population. METHODS: A case-control study of 224 GAgP patients and 139 healthy controls was conducted. The clinical parameters of probing depth (PD), attachment loss (AL) and bleeding index (BI) were recorded. Platelet count (PLT), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet large cell ratio (PLCR), mean platelet volume (MPV), serum total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG), high and low-density lipoprotein (HDL and LDL) were also measured. The CYP1A1 rs1048943 SNP was genotyped by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Logistic and linear regression models were used to measure correlation. RESULTS: The CYP1A1 rs1048943 AG/GG genotype was associated with GAgP (OR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.01, 2.42), PD, AL and decreased PDW, PLCR and MPV after adjustment for covariates. Gene-lipid interactions were found between CYP1A1 rs1048943 and HDL for PD (Pinteraction  = 0.0033), BI (Pinteraction  = 0.0311) and AL (Pinteraction  = 0.0141) and between CYP1A1 rs1048943 and LDL for PD (Pinteraction  = 0.013) among patients with GAgP. CONCLUSION: The G allele of the CYP1A1 rs1048943 gene was associated with GAgP, periodontal status and platelet-related inflammation status in a Chinese population. Hyperlipidemia could modulate the effect of CYP1A1 rs1048943 on the periodontal status of GAgP.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between FADS1 rs174537 polymorphism and serum proteins in patients with aggressive periodontitis, which may provide benefits for diagnosis and treatment of aggressive periodontitis. METHODS: A total of 353 patients with aggressive periodontitis (group AgP) and 125 matched controls (group HP) were recruited in the study. Genotyping of FADS1 rs174537 and serum biochemical indexes were tested at the study's start. The relationships between the levels of TP, GLB, ALB, A/G and genotyping were analyzed. RESULTS: (1) The detection rate of allele G in group AgP was higher than that in group HP(68.1% vs. 61.2%, P=0.046,OR=1.35,95% CI 1.00-1.83); the detection rate of genotype GG in group AgP was higher than in group HP(45.5% vs. 34.4%,P=0.029, OR=1.60, 95% CI 1.05-2.44). (2) In group AgP, the patients with GG genotype exhibited significantly lower TP, GLB than the patients with GT+TT genotype [(77.08 ± 7.88) g/L vs. (79.00 ± 4.66) g/L, P=0.007; (28.17 ± 7.63) g/L vs.(29.88 ± 3.49) g/L,P=0.007) and the higher A/G(1.72 ± 0.22 vs.1.67 ± 0.22, P=0.040), but there was no significant difference in ALB between the patients with GG genotype and the patients with GT+TT genotype. In group HP, there were no significant differences in TP, GLB, A/G and ALB between individuals with genotype GT+TT and with genotype GG. (3)Compared with individuals with genotype GT+TT in group HP, the AgP patients with genotype GT+TT exhibited significantly higher TP, GLB [(79.00 ± 4.66) g/L vs. (75.20 ± 4.53) g/L, P<0.01; (29.88 ± 3.49) g/L vs.(26.55 ± 2.94) g/L, P<0.01) and the lower A/G(1.67 ± 0.22 vs. 1.88 ± 0.30, P<0.01), but there was no significant difference in ALB. There were no significant differences in TP, GLB, A/G and ALB the between the AgP patients with genotype GG and the healthy subjects with the same genotype either. CONCLUSION: FADS1 rs174537 polymorphism is associated with aggressive periodontitis. The patients with genotype GG in group AgP had relatively lower TP,GLB and higher A/G. Genotype GG might be a risk indicator for aggressive periodontitis by reducing host defense capability and contributing to inflammatory response in the occurrence and development of aggressive periodontitis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of full-mouth debridement (subgingival scaling and root planning, SRP) by 2 times within 1 week and compare the clinical effects of different sequences of debridement-antibiotic usage in patients with severe chronic periodontitis (CP). METHODS: A double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial was conducted in 30 severe CP patients (14 males and 16 females, 40.5 ± 8.4 years old on average from 35 to 60) receiving 3 different sequences of debridement-antibiotictherapy: Group A, antibiotic usage (metronidazole, MTZ, 0.2 g, tid, 7 d; amoxicillin, AMX 0.5 g, tid, 7 d) was started together with SRP (completed by 2 times in 7 d); Group B, antibiotic usage (MTZ 0.2 g, tid, 7 d; AMX 0.5 g, tid, 7 d) was started 1 d after SRP(completed by 2 times in 7 d); Group C, SRP alone[probing depth (PD), bleeding index (BI) and tooth mobility] was examined. The average full-mouth probing depth, the average full-mouth proximal probing depth (pPD), the percentage of sites with PD>5 mm (PD>5 mm%), the percentage of sites with proximal PD>5 mm (pPD>5 mm%), the average bleeding index (BI) and the percentage of sites with bleeding on probing (BOP%) were calculated. Clinical examinations were performed at baseline and 2 months post therapy. RESULTS: (1) Compared with baseline conditions, all the subjects showed clinical improvements in all the parameters evaluated 2 months post therapy, P<0.05. (2) Significant difference were observed in the average PD changes between Group A [(2.15 ± 0.42) mm], Group B [(1.76 ± 0.29) mm] and Group C [(1.57 ± 0.33) mm], P<0.05. No significant difference was observed in the average PD changes between Group B and Group C, P=0.354. Significant differences were observed in the average pPD changes between Group A [(2.45 ± 0.43)mm] and Group C[(1.90 ± 0.48) mm], P<0.05. No significant difference was observed in BI and BOP% changes between Group A,Group B and Group C. CONCLUSION: For patients with severe chronic periodontitis, it is safe and feasible to receive full-mouth SRP by 2 times within 1 week. The short-term (2 months) advantages in PD changes are observed in patients receiving SRP and antibiotic usage at the same time comparing with patients using antibiotics after SRP or SRP alone.

RESUMEN

Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC)-based activated carbon spheres with smooth surfaces, good sphericity, interconnected hierarchical porous structure and high porosity have been synthesized by non-solvent induced phase separation method, followed by successive treatments of stabilization, carbonization at 450 °C in N2 atmosphere, and activation with CO2 as an agent at 900-1000 °C. The effect of activation temperatures on the textural properties of activated carbon spheres and their adsorption potential for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under dynamic conditions is investigated. CO2 activation improves the hierarchy in the microporous range by stimulating the formation of supermicropores and significantly expands the specific surface area and pore volume of activated carbon spheres. The textural properties of adsorbents play a vital role in the adsorption performance of different VOCs. The adsorption capacity of VOC molecules can be greatly promoted by elevating specific surface area and pore volume. Due to the compatibility difference between the VOC molecules and the pore structure of adsorbents, the adsorption capacity follows the order of toluene > m-xylene > n-hexane. The adsorption isotherm of toluene on CPVC-AC1000 can be generally expressed by the Langmuir model. The adsorbents with larger average pore diameters possess a lower activation energy of desorption, which is beneficial for desorption. The carbon sphere activated at 1000 °C is a high-performance adsorbent with good reusability. Thus, the present study provides a synthesis process to produce the activated carbon spheres with high porosity from low-cost CPVC for its application in VOC adsorption.

RESUMEN

The effect of age on outcomes after simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK) among type II diabetes (T2DM) recipients remains inconclusive. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the age at time of transplantation and mortality, graft loss and metabolic profiles of T2DM SPK recipients. A retrospective cohort consisting of T2MD SPK recipients in a single transplant center was established. The baseline clinical characteristics and outcomes were collected and analyzed based on the age groups divided by 55-year-old. Time-to-event data analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier method, and competing risk method was adopted to calculate the cumulative incidence of graft loss. A mixed regression model was applied to compare metabolic outcomes including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). 103 T2DM SPK recipients were included, of which 35 were > = 55 years old and 68 were < 55 years old. Baseline characteristics were comparable between age groups. The results indicated that comparable 5-year survival outcomes between groups with functioning grafts perioperatively. Additionally, no relationship of age with graft loss, complications and metabolic outcomes was detected.

RESUMEN

The three-component reactions of enaminones, α-diazo esters/ketones, and t-butyl nitrite (TBN) for the switchable synthesis of isomeric isoxazoles have been realized. The catalysis with Cu(II) salt provides 3,4-disubsituted isoxazoles via [3 + 2] cycloaddition. On the other hand, the catalysis of Ag(I) with identical substrates leads to isomeric isoxazoles with reversed C3 and C4 substitution based on a key [2 + 1] cycloaddition.

RESUMEN

The present study was implemented to compare the dosimetric parameters of the target dose coverage and critical structures in the treatment planning of four radiotherapy techniques [namely, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), hybrid IMRT (h-IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT)] for stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) qualified plans for medical physicists, therapists and physicians. A total of 40 patients confirmed to have stage IIIA or IIIB NSCLC were enrolled, and four plans were designed for each patient. The prescription dose to the planning target volume (PTV) was assigned as 60 Gy in 30 fractions. The conformity index (CI), heterogeneity index (HI) and parameters of organs at risk (OARs) were calculated. For the PTV, the CI for VMAT was found to be the highest of all the four techniques (P<0.05), whereas the HI for the h-IMRT technique was found to be the lowest (P<0.05). Concerning the OARs, for the percentage of lung volume receiving a dose >5 Gy (lung V5), the highest value was obtained with VMAT (P<0.05), whereas for lung V30 and heart V30, the VMAT and IMRT techniques were found to be better compared with 3D-CRT and h-IMRT (P<0.05). For esophagus V50, the maximal dose (Dmax) and mean dose for the IMRT technique displayed the best results (P<0.05), and in the case of the spinal cord, the Dmax with VMAT showed a significant advantage over the other techniques (P<0.05). The treatment monitor units (MUs) in IMRT were found to be the largest (P<0.05), whereas the treatment time with VMAT was the shortest (P<0.05). For smaller PTVs, VMAT was the technique that provided the optimal dose distribution and sparing of the heart. Compared with 3D-CRT alone, adding 20% IMRT to the 3D-CRT base plan was shown to improve the plan quality, and IMRT and VMAT, as techniques, had better dose coverage and sparing of OARs. Furthermore, for patients in whom the lung V5 could be kept low enough, VMAT potentially offered a good alternative to the technique to IMRT, thereby offering additional possibilities for sparing of other OARs, and decreasing the MUs and treatment time.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a heterogeneous group of inflammatory central nervous system disorders caused by a misdirected immune response against self-antigens expressed in the central nervous system. The thymus is a central organ in the immune system and thymic tumors are thought to be possible initiators of many neurological disorders. Recently, there is growing evidence that thymomas are associated with autoimmune encephalitis. AIMS: Our study initially explored the characteristics of patients with autoimmune encephalitis combined with thymoma. METHODS: We used patient data from January 1, 2011 to October 1, 2021 from the PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, and CNKI platforms to analyze overall demographics, frequency of symptoms and associations, and treatment prognosis outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 68 patients were included. There were 39 female cases (57.4%). The mean age was 50 years (IQR 40-66 years). All had acute and subacute onset. The clinical manifestations were mostly cognitive changes (70.6%), mental disorders (57.4%), and epilepsy (50.0%). The most common neuronal antibody was alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities were present in 81.0% of patients, mostly in the hippocampus, temporal lobe, and some in cortical and subcortical areas. Abnormalities in the electroencephalogram (EEG) in 69.8% of patients. Treatment involved immunotherapy and thymoma treatment, with 79.7% of patients improving after treatment. While 20.3% of patients had a poor prognosis. Further, 14.8% of patients relapsed. Mental disorders, autonomic dysfunction, sleep disturbances, anti-Ma2, and thymoma untreated were more frequent in patients with poor prognosis. CONCLUSION: Thymoma-associated autoimmune encephalitis is a unique disease entity. Long-term follow-up of chest CT findings is recommended for patients with autoimmune encephalitis.

RESUMEN

We describe three cases of overlapping Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) Encephalitis and Autoimmune Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Astrocytopathy (GFAP-A). The three cases all presented with initial symptoms of fever, headache, coma, and posture tremor of the upper limbs, then followed by limb weakness and dysuria. All of the three cases were on ventilators. Case 1 and 2 improved dramatically after intravenous methylprednisoloneand immunoglobulin treatment. However, case 3 presented dyspneic, and died from gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The GFAP-A triggered by EBV intracranial infection could initially masquerade as EBV encephalitis only, and the detection of GFAP antibody is essential for differentiation.

RESUMEN

Comparative mitogenomics of Ulva species have revealed remarkable variations in genome size due to the integration of exogenous DNA fragments, the proliferation of group I/II introns, and the change of repeat sequences. The genus Ulva is a species-rich taxonomic group, containing a variety of green-tide forming algae. In this study, five complete mitogenomes of the green-tide forming macroalga, Ulva meridionalis R. Horimoto and S. Shimada, were assembled and compared with the available ulvophyceae mtDNAs. The main circular mitogenomes of U. meridionalis ranged from 82.94 to 111.49 kb in size, and its 111.49-kb mitogenome was the largest Ulva mitogenome sequenced so far. The expansion of U. meridionalis mitogenomes is mainly due to the tandem integration of a 5.36-kb mitochondrial circular plasmid (pUme), as well as the proliferation of introns. An intact DNA-directed RNA polymerase gene (rpo) was present in pUme of U. meridionalis and was then detected in two putative plasmids (pUmu1 and pUmu2) found in Ulva mutabilis. The observed integration of the circular plasmid into U. meridionalis mitogenomes seems to occur via homologous recombination, and is a more recent evolutionary event. Many highly homologous sequences of these three putative plasmids can be detected in the other Ulva mtDNAs sequenced thus far, indicating the integration of different mitochondrial plasmid DNA into the mitogenomes is a common phenomenon in the evolution of Ulva mitogenomes. The random incidence of destruction of plasmid-derived rpos and open reading frames (orfs) suggests that their existence is not the original characteristic of Ulva mitogenomes and there is no selective pressure to maintain their integrity. The frequent integration and rapid divergence of plasmid-derived sequences is one of the most important evolutionary forces to shape the diversity of Ulva mitogenomes.

RESUMEN

The mechanism of the initial reactions in the acid-catalytic conversion of d-xylose/d-xylulose to furfural was studied with density functional theory. The reactions included mutual transformations among d-xylose, d-xylulose and the intermediate of 1,2-enediol. The catalytic performances of several acids including H2SO4, HNO3, HCl, HBr and HI, and the solvent effects of water and THF (tetrahydrofuran) were studied. A simplified kinetic model of the d-xylose/d-xylulose-to-furfural conversion in water solvent was built, with the assumption that the conversion from 1,2-enediol to furfural was the rate-limiting step and could be treated as one-step reaction. The simulation can well fit the experimental regulation, which verifies the rationality of the model simplification. The dominant reaction pathways from d-xylose/d-xylulose to furfural were deduced based on the calculated energy barriers and corresponding reaction rate constants, with different acid catalysis and reaction mediums.
