In this study, surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates were investigated by the electrodeposition method to detect low concentrations of pesticides via the electrodeposition method with different agents from silver and gold precursors on APTES-modified ITO glass. A dual-potential method supplied three electrodes and was performed with a nucleation potential of 0.7 V for 2 s and a growth potential of -0.2 V for 500 s. The Ag film produced by the electrodeposition approach has great surface uniformity and good SERS signal amplification for the thiram insecticide at low concentrations. Interestingly, the ITO/APTES/Ag substrate extensively increased the sensitivity than the other investigated ones, thanks to the adequate assistance of amino groups of APTES in the denser and hierarchical deposition of Ag NPs. These observations were additionally elucidated via finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculation. For thiram, the detection was set at 10-8 M with an enhancement factor of up to 3.6 × 107 times. Comparing the SERS spectra of thiram at concentrations of 10-3, 10-4, and 10-5 M with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 7.0% demonstrates excellent reproducibility of the ITO/APTES/Ag substrate. In addition, the special selectivity of the ITO/APTES/Ag substrate for thiram demonstrates that these nanostructures can identify pesticides with extreme sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Tilts can induce alterations in cerebral hemodynamics in healthy neonates, but prior studies have only examined systemic parameters or used small tilt angles (<90°). The healthy neonatal population, however, are commonly subjected to large tilt angles (≥90°). We sought to characterize the cerebrovascular response to a 90° tilt in healthy term neonates. METHODS: We performed a secondary descriptive analysis on 44 healthy term neonates. We measured cerebral oxygen saturation (rcSO2), oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), breathing rate (BR), and cerebral fractional tissue oxygen extraction (cFTOE) over three consecutive 90° tilts. These parameters were measured for 2-min while neonates were in a supine (0°) position and 2-min while tilted to a sitting (90°) position. We measured oscillometric mean blood pressure (MBP) at the start of each tilt. RESULTS: rcSO2 and BR decreased significantly in the sitting position, whereas cFTOE, SpO2, and MBP increased significantly in the sitting position. We detected a significant position-by-time interaction for all physiological parameters. CONCLUSION: A 90° tilt induces a decline in rcSO2 and an increase in cFTOE in healthy term neonates. Understanding the normal cerebrovascular response to a 90° tilt in healthy neonates will help clinicians to recognize abnormal responses in high-risk infant populations. IMPACT: Healthy term neonates (≤14 days old) had decreased cerebral oxygen saturation (~1.1%) and increased cerebral oxygen extraction (~0.01) following a 90° tilt. We detected a significant position-by-time interaction with all physiological parameters measured, suggesting the effect of position varied across consecutive tilts. No prior study has characterized the cerebral oxygen saturation response to a 90° tilt in healthy term neonates.

In this work, the perovskite LaZnO3 was synthesized via sol-gel method and applied for photocatalytic treatment of sulfamethizole (SMZ) antibiotics under visible light activation. SMZ was almost completely degraded (99.2% ± 0.3%) within 4 hr by photocatalyst LaZnO3 at the optimal dosage of 1.1 g/L, with a mineralization proportion of 58.7% ± 0.4%. The efficient performance of LaZnO3 can be attributed to its wide-range light absorption and the appropriate energy band edge levels, which facilitate the formation of active agents such as ·O2-, h+, and ·OH. The integration of RP-HPLC/Q-TOF-MS and DFT-based computational techniques revealed three degradation pathways of SMZ, which were initiated by the deamination reaction at the aniline ring, the breakdown of the sulfonamide moieties, and a process known as Smile-type rearrangement and SO2 intrusion. Corresponding toxicity of SMZ and the intermediates were analyzed by quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR), indicating the effectiveness of LaZnO3-based photocatalysis in preventing secondary pollution of the intermediates to the ecosystem during the degradation process. The visible-light-activated photocatalyst LaZnO3 exhibited efficient performance in the occurrence of inorganic anions and maintained high durability across multiple recycling tests, making it a promising candidate for practical antibiotic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of clinical pharmacist-led interventions on the switch from intravenous (IV) to oral (PO) antibiotics among inpatients with infectious diseases. METHODS: A before-and-after study was conducted among inpatients aged 18 or older who were diagnosed with infectious diseases and received IV antibiotics for at least 24 h at the Thong Nhat Hospital during the pre-intervention (between January 2021 and June 2021) and intervention (between January 2022 and June 2022) periods. Information on patient characteristics, antibiotic usage, length of hospital stay and treatment outcomes was obtained from medical records. The interventions included introducing IV-to-PO switch guidelines to physicians and clinical pharmacists' feedback on eligible cases. The impact of the pharmacists' interventions was evaluated by comparing primary outcomes (switch rate and appropriateness of switching) and secondary outcomes (duration of IV therapy, length of hospital stay and treatment outcomes) between the two study periods. RESULTS: We included 99 patients in the pre-intervention and 80 patients in the intervention period. The proportion of patients who switched from IV-to-PO antibiotics increased from 44.4% in the pre-intervention period to 67.8% in the intervention period (p = 0.008). The overall rate of appropriate conversion increased significantly from 43.8% to 67.5% (p = 0.043). There were no statistically significant differences between the two periods with respect to the median duration of IV therapy (9 days vs. 8 days), length of hospital stay (10 days vs. 9 days) and treatment outcomes. Logistic regression analysis showed that the interventions resulted in a higher switch rate, whereas age was negatively associated with the switching rate. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of clinical pharmacist-led interventions was effective in promoting IV-to-PO antibiotic conversion.

Cyanides, which are extremely toxic chemicals that are rapidly absorbed into the human body and interact with cytochrome oxidase, strongly inhibit cellular respiration to body death with convulsions. Cyanide ions that exist in many forms in nature such as those found in apricot kernels, cassava roots, and bamboo shoots as cyanogenic glycosides are inevitably used in various industries, including gold and silver mining as well as in dyes and plastic industries. In this study, for the sake of developing ultrahigh-sensitive sensors for cyanide monitoring in a simple manner, we chemically synthesize Aucore-Agshell hybrid nanomaterials of different core/shell thicknesses for colorimetric sensors and fiber optical sensors. Their sensing principle relies on the formation of the Ag/Au cyanocomplex upon cyanide injection. The generated metal cyanocomplex induced changes in refractive indices, causing changes in properties of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), i.e., optical absorbance change for the colorimetric sensors. For fiber optical sensors, the hybrid metal nanoparticles were immobilized on the fiber core surface and the metal cyanocomplex formation induced changes in the fiber cladding refractive index, enabling quantitative cyanide detection with ultrahigh sensitivity. The LSPR-based colorimetric sensor provided the lowest detectable cyanide concentration of 5 × 10-6 M, whereas the value for the fiber-based sensor was 8 × 10-11 M.

BACKGROUND: Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) differs in its spatio-temporal distribution in Vietnam with the highest incidence seen during the summer months in the northern provinces. AES has multiple aetiologies, and the cause remains unknown in many cases. While vector-borne disease such as Japanese encephalitis and dengue virus and non-vector-borne diseases such as influenza and enterovirus show evidence of seasonality, associations with climate variables and the spatio-temporal distribution in Vietnam differs between these. The aim of this study was therefore to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of, and risk factors for AES in Vietnam to help hypothesise the aetiology. METHODS: The number of monthly cases per province for AES, meningitis and diseases including dengue fever; influenza-like-illness (ILI); hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD); and Streptococcus suis were obtained from the General Department for Preventive Medicine (GDPM) from 1998-2016. Covariates including climate, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), elevation, the number of pigs, socio-demographics, JEV vaccination coverage and the number of hospitals were also collected. Spatio-temporal multivariable mixed-effects negative binomial Bayesian models with an outcome of the number of cases of AES, a combination of the covariates and harmonic terms to determine the magnitude of seasonality were developed. RESULTS: The national monthly incidence of AES declined by 63.3% over the study period. However, incidence increased in some provinces, particularly in the Northwest region. In northern Vietnam, the incidence peaked in the summer months in contrast to the southern provinces where incidence remained relatively constant throughout the year. The incidence of meningitis, ILI and S. suis infection; temperature, relative humidity with no lag, NDVI at a lag of one month, and the number of pigs per 100,000 population were positively associated with the number of cases of AES in all models in which these covariates were included. CONCLUSIONS: The positive correlation of AES with temperature and humidity suggest that a number of cases may be due to vector-borne diseases, suggesting a need to focus on vaccination campaigns. However, further surveillance and research are recommended to investigate other possible aetiologies such as S. suis or Orientia tsutsugamushi.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the value of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in predicting ovulation induced by aromatase inhibitors (AI) and pregnancy outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: From January 2018 to December 2020, this prospective cohort study enrolled women with PCOS aged between 18 and 45 years who underwent ovulation induction using AI protocol and intrauterine insemination (IUI) for infertility at a Center for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, University Hospital. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to estimate the chance of ovulation responses and pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: In total, 64% of 65 women with PCOS were recruited following AI treatment, and the clinical pregnancy rate was 19.4% following IUI. Patients who experienced ovulation had a lower mean serum AMH concentration than non-responders (7.11 ng/mL vs. 8.95 ng/mL, respectively), but the difference was not statistically significant. Between the pregnancy and non-pregnancy groups, statistically significant differences in AMH concentrations were observed (8.71 ng/mL vs. 6.73 ng/mL, respectively, P = 0.040). The area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic for non-ovulation prediction was 0.445, 95% CI (0.284-0.606) with P = 0.467, and for clinical pregnancy was 0.735, 95% CI (0.561-0.910) with P = 0.104. CONCLUSIONS: In women with PCOS, the AMH level does not predict ovarian responsiveness to AI treatment, but it does predict the success of IUI cycles.

PURPOSE: Congenital heart disease affects thousands of newborns each year in the United States. Previous United States-based research has explored how sociodemographic factors may impact health outcomes in infants with congenital heart disease; however, their impact on the incidence of congenital heart disease is unclear. We explored the sociodemographic profile related to congenital heart disease to help address health disparities that arise from race and social determinants of health. Defining the sociodemographic factors associated with congenital heart disease will encourage implementation of potential preventative measures. DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of longitudinally collected data comparing 39 infants with congenital heart disease and 30 healthy controls. We used a questionnaire to collect sociodemographic data. Pearson's chi-square test/Fisher's exact tests analyzed the associations among different sociodemographic factors between infants with congenital heart disease and healthy controls. RESULTS: We found a statistically significant difference in maternal education between our 2 groups of infants (p = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Maternal education was associated with congenital heart disease. Future studies are needed to further characterize sociodemographic factors that may predict and impact the incidence of congenital heart disease and to determine possible interventions that may help decrease health disparities regarding the incidence of congenital heart disease. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Understanding the associations between maternal sociodemographic factors and infant congenital heart disease would allow clinicians to identify mothers at higher risk of having an infant with congenital heart disease.

We study how investors in the US municipal bond market price the state lockdowns announced during the coronavirus (COVID) pandemic. To begin with, we examine the extent to which state-level COVID developments influence yield spreads of municipal bonds. We find that macro-level factors are the primary determinants of municipal bond spreads during the pandemic, but state-level COVID developments also matter at the margin. For instance, a doubling of new COVID cases in a state is associated with a 2% (1.4 basis points) increase in yield spreads of municipal bonds issued in that state. Accordingly, lockdowns may decrease municipal bond spreads by reducing COVID cases, but lockdowns may also increase them by reducing local economic activities. Overall, we find that yield spreads in both primary and secondary municipal bond markets increase by about 15% following lockdown announcements, suggesting that lockdown announcements increase the risk premiums investors require for holding municipal bonds.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which influenza recurrence depends upon waning immunity from prior infection is undefined. We used antibody titers of Ha-Nam cohort participants to estimate protection curves and decay trajectories. METHODS: Households (270) participated in influenza-like-illness (ILI) surveillance and provided blood at intervals spanning laboratory-confirmed virus transmission. Sera were tested in hemagglutination inhibition assay. Infection was defined as influenza virus-positive ILI and/or seroconversion. Median protective titers were estimated using scaled-logistic regression to model pretransmission titer against infection status in that season, limiting analysis to households with infection(s). Titers were modelled against month since infection using mixed-effects linear regression to estimate decay and when titers fell below protection thresholds. RESULTS: From December 2008-2012, 295 and 314 participants were infected with H1N1pdm09-like and A/Perth/16/09-like (H3N2Pe09) viruses, respectively. The proportion protected rose more steeply with titer for H1N1pdm09 than for H3N2Pe09, and estimated 50% protection titers were 19.6 and 37.3, respectively. Postinfection titers started higher against H3N2Pe09 but decayed more steeply than against H1N1pdm09. Seroprotection was estimated to be sustained against H1N1pdm09 but to wane by 8-months for H3N2Pe09. CONCLUSIONS: Estimates indicate that infection induces durable seroprotection against H1N1pdm09 but not H3N2Pe09, which could in part account for the younger age of A(H1N1) versus A(H3N2) cases.

Anthrax is a priority zoonosis for control in Vietnam. The geographic distribution of anthrax remains to be defined, challenging our ability to target areas for control. We analyzed human anthrax cases in Vietnam to obtain anthrax incidence at the national and provincial level. Nationally, the trendline for cases remained at ≈61 cases/year throughout the 26 years of available data, indicating control efforts are not effectively reducing disease burden over time. Most anthrax cases occurred in the Northern Midlands and Mountainous regions, and the provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Son La experienced some of the highest incidence rates. Based on spatial Bayes smoothed maps, every region of Vietnam experienced human anthrax cases during the study period. Clarifying the distribution of anthrax in Vietnam will enable us to better identify risk areas for improved surveillance, rapid clinical care, and livestock vaccination campaigns.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the characteristics of prophylactic antimicrobial use in clean and clean-contaminated surgical procedures and assessed the efficacy of a prophylactic antimicrobial stewardship intervention at Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 354 patients who underwent either clean or clean-contaminated surgical procedures at Thong Nhat Hospital. Eligible patients were classified with respect to three periods of intervention from 2017 to 2020. Data collection included surgical procedures, patient characteristics, and prophylactic antimicrobial usage. We determined the efficacy of antimicrobial stewardship intervention based on comparisons among the primary outcome (the appropriateness of prophylactic antimicrobials) and secondary outcomes (postoperative antimicrobial prophylaxis (AP) prolongation, length of postoperative hospital stay, and cost of antimicrobials). RESULTS: The mean age of patients in periods 1, 2, and 3 was 54.5 ± 16.6, 50.2 ± 16.5, and 52.8 ± 17.3 years, respectively, with an overall male/female ratio of 1.1/1. No significant differences were detected in basic patient characteristics during the three periods. Majority of the surgical procedures were clean (56%-59%) and scheduled (85%-86%). Prophylactic antimicrobial stewardship intervention enhanced AP appropriateness (by 12.7%, 12.7%, and 39.0% in periods 1, 2, and 3, respectively, p < 0.001), decreased postoperative prophylactic antimicrobial duration [3.0 (0-6), 1.5 (0-5), and 0.0 (0-1) days, respectively, p < 0.001], and reduced average antimicrobial expenses (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The prophylactic antimicrobial stewardship interventions introduced at Thong Nhat Hospital had several positive impacts on the appropriateness of prophylactic antimicrobial use and treatment costs.

BACKGROUND: Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) often experience oral feeding intolerance requiring gastrostomy (GT). Complications related to GT use are common. The study aim was to identify factors associated with continued GT use at one-year. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed at a tertiary children's hospital using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons database and patients' electronic medical record. Infants <1-year with CHD who underwent cardiac and GT surgery between January 2014-October 2019 were identified. Patient demographics, preoperative feeding, clinical variables, and GT use at one-year was evaluated. A separate cohort discharged with a nasogastric tube (NGT) was identified for longitudinal comparisons. RESULTS: Of 137 infants who received a GT, 115 (84%) continued using their GT at one-year. Factors associated with continued GT use included lower median percent of goal oral feeding before GT placement (0% IQR 0-6.5 versus 3.7% IQR 0-31), prolonged hospitalization after GT placement (36% versus 14%, P-value = 0.048), and failure to take oral feeds at discharge (69% versus 27%, P-value <0.001). There was no difference in demographics or clinical comorbidities between groups. Clinic/emergency room visits for GT complications were common (72%). Eight infants discharged with a NGT did not require GT placement. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with CHD tolerating minimal oral nutrition before GT placement, prolonged hospitalization after GT, and difficulty with oral feeds at discharge were more likely to use their GT at 1-year. Outpatient NGT feeding is feasible for select infants with CHD. Efforts to optimize care for this complex, device-dependent population are warranted to minimize risks and facilitate family engagement for long-term care.

INTRODUCTION: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) often experience feeding intolerance due to aspiration, inability to tolerate feed volume, or reflux within the first few months of life, requiring a surgically placed gastrostomy tube (GT) for durable enteral access. However, complications such as GT dislodgement, cellulitis, and leakage related to GT use are common. GT-related complications can lead to unscheduled pediatric surgery clinic or emergency room (ER) visits, which can be time consuming for the family and increase overall healthcare costs. We sought to identify factors associated with GT complications within 2 wk after GT surgery and 1-y after discharge home following GT placement in infants with CHD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons database and electronic medical records from a tertiary children's hospital. We identified infants <1 y old underwent CHD surgery followed by GT surgery between September 2013-August 2018. Demographics, pre-operative feeding regimen, comorbidities, and GT-related utilization were measured. Postoperative GT complications (e.g., GT cellulitis, leakage, dislodgement, obstruction, and granulation tissue) within 2 wk after the GT surgery and an unplanned pediatric surgery clinic or ER visit within 1-y after discharge home were captured. Bivariate comparisons and multivariable logistic regression evaluated factors associated with GT complications and unplanned clinic or ER visits. A Kaplan-Meier failure curve examined the timing of ER/clinic visits. RESULTS: Of 152 infants who underwent CHD then GT surgeries, 66% (N = 101) had postoperative GT complications. Overall, 83 unscheduled clinic visits were identified after discharge, with 37% (N = 31) due to concerns about granulation tissue. Of 137 ER visits, 48% (N = 66) were due to accidental GT dislodgement. Infants who were hospitalized for ≥2 wk after GT surgery had more complications than those discharged home within 2 wk of the GT surgery (40.6% versus 15.7%, P = 0.002). Infants receiving oral nutrition before CHD surgery (38.6% versus 60%, P=<0.001) or with single ventricle defects (19.8% versus 37.3%, P = 0.02) had fewer GT complications. After adjusting for type of cardiac anomaly, infants receiving oral nutrition prior to CHD surgery had a decreased likelihood of GT complications (odds ratio OR 0.46; 95% confidence intervals CI:0.23-0.93). A Kaplan-Meier failure curve demonstrated that 50% of the cohort experienced a complication leading to an unscheduled ER/clinic visit within 6 mo after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: Unplanned visits to the ER or pediatric surgery clinic occur frequently for infants with CHD requiring a surgically placed GT. Oral feedings before cardiac surgery associated with fewer GT complications. Prolonged hospitalization associated with more GT complications. Optimizing outpatient care and family education regarding GT maintenance may reduce unscheduled visits for this high-risk, device-dependent infant population.

We explored the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Vietnam. In June 2020, we interviewed 32 PLHIV who identified as men who have sex with men, persons who inject drugs, female sex workers, or transgender after Vietnam's strict quarantine period. While most participants were knowledgeable regarding COVID-19 transmission and prevention, COVID-19 was perceived more as a threat to individual rather than community health. The pandemic affected PLHIV significantly. Many lost employment with reduced income and increased family stress and conflict. Travel restrictions and unemployment affected access to antiretroviral (ARV) medication, particularly for transgender PLHIV who obtain ARVs from unofficial sources. Participants recounted substantial mental health effects, including worry, stress, and boredom. However, some respondents reported positive effects on family relationships. After quarantine, most reported feeling better, although financial worries persisted. Preparation for social emergencies should include development of supports for PLHIV in vulnerable groups.

TiO2 is a well-known semiconductor used widely in the photocatalyst field, but its photocatalytic applications are hampered by a fast electron-hole recombination rate and low visible light absorption due to a wide-band-gap energy. Herein, we present a simple, low cost, and green approach to obtain carbon dots from microalgae, namely microalgae-based carbon dots (MCDs), using an unprecedented microwave-assisted treatment. The MCDs were successfully decorated on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles. The as-prepared composite exhibited a superior photodegradation of methylene blue, compared with pristine TiO2 (83% and 27%, respectively) under visible light irradiation. The MCDs in TiO2-MCDs serve as electron reservoirs to trap photoinduced electrons and as photosensitizers for the improvement of visible light absorption; both factors play an important role in the improvement of the TiO2 photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the as-prepared composite photocatalyst also exhibits high photostability and recyclability during the photodegradation of methylene blue. Therefore, this work provides an original approach to the development of environmentally friendly and highly effective photocatalysts for the treatment of various organic pollutants, which can go a long way toward ensuring a safe and sustainable environment.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a common birth defect in the United States. CHD infants are more likely to have smaller head circumference and neurodevelopmental delays; however, the cause is unknown. Altered cerebrovascular hemodynamics may contribute to neurologic abnormalities, such as smaller head circumference, thus we created a novel Cerebrovascular Stability Index (CSI), as a surrogate for cerebral autoregulation. We hypothesized that CHD infants would have an association between CSI and head circumference. We performed a prospective, longitudinal study in CHD infants and healthy controls. We measured CSI and head circumference at 4 time points (newborn, 3, 6, 9 months). We calculated CSI by subtracting the average 2-min sitting from supine cerebral oxygenation (rcSO2) over three consecutive tilts (0-90°), then averaged the change score for each age. Linear regressions quantified the relationship between CSI and head circumference. We performed 177 assessments in total (80 healthy controls, 97 CHD infants). The average head circumference was smaller in CHD infants (39.2 cm) compared to healthy controls (41.6 cm) (p < 0.001) and head circumference increased by 0.27 cm as CSI improved in the sample (p = 0.04) overall when combining all time points. Similarly, head circumference increased by 0.32 cm as CSI improved among CHD infants (p = 0.04). We found CSI significantly associated with head circumference in our sample overall and CHD infants alone, which suggests that impaired CSI may affect brain size in CHD infants. Future studies are needed to better understand the mechanism of interaction between CSI and brain growth.

RESUMEN

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common types of birth defects, with 40,000 newborns diagnosed yearly in the United States. This article describes: (1) four common heart defects seen in neonatal intensive care units, (2) the typical medical/nursing care of these neonates, and (3) common surgical management for the defects. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, dextro-transposition of the great arteries, tetralogy of Fallot, and pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum are four common types of CHD requiring NICU admission. Knowledge of these defects will help nurses to appropriately manage and treat neonates with these types of CHD.

We study how investors in the US municipal bond market price the state lockdowns announced during the coronavirus (COVID) pandemic. To begin with, we examine the extent to which state-level COVID developments influence yield spreads of municipal bonds. We find that macro-level factors are the primary determinants of municipal bond spreads during the pandemic, but state-level COVID developments also matter at the margin. For instance, a doubling of new COVID cases in a state is associated with a 2% (1.4 basis points) increase in yield spreads of municipal bonds issued in that state. Accordingly, lockdowns may decrease municipal bond spreads by reducing COVID cases, but lockdowns may also increase them by reducing local economic activities. Overall, we find that yield spreads in both primary and secondary municipal bond markets increase by about 15% following lockdown announcements, suggesting that lockdown announcements increase the risk premiums investors require for holding municipal bonds.

AIM: To investigate the status of dental caries and assess the effectiveness of dental caries prevention interventions in children from 3 to 5-year-old in Hue City, Vietnam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were 464 children and their direct caregivers at some kindergartens in Hue City from June 2020 to October 2021. The study included two consecutive phases: the first one was a cross-sectional study to identify the rate of dental caries and related factors in the studied kindergartens, and phase 2 was a controlled comparative interventional study for a period of 12 months. RESULTS: The mean of decayed, missing, filled, and DMFT index was 8.25, 0.09, 0.48, and 8.82, respectively, with no statistically significant difference in these figures between the living areas. The multivariable logistic regression model revealed some factors related to dental caries, including age, frequency of toothbrushing per day, parent-assisted toothbrushing, and eating and drinking sweets. Results showed the effectiveness of a community-based intervention for preventing dental caries, gingivitis, and plaque in the intervention group, compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The rate of dental caries among Vietnamese children was remarkably high. A comprehensive intervention to prevent early childhood dental caries was effective and might be considered a necessary program in healthcare prophylaxis. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This intervention was consistent with the guidelines of WHO and based on evidences of related factors of dental caries identified in a previous cross-sectional study.
