RESUMEN

Examination by the enzyme-immunoassay of organs of 10 small mammal species trapped in different landscape zones of the Estonian SSR revealed the presence of HFRS virus antigen in organs of bank voles and field mice. Radioimmunoassay studies of serum specimens from donors demonstrated the presence of antibody to HFRS virus in 2.54% of those examined.

RESUMEN

The data on isolation from birds and identification of two strains of alphaviruses in Estonia in the territory of Vilsandy natural reserve are presented. Electron microscopy of purified virions allowed the isolates to be classified into the family of togaviruses, and serological identification (neutralization test, CFT) using polyvalent sera and monoclonal antibody showed them to belong to Sindbis virus.

RESUMEN

The foci of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) of 2 types, differing in their morbidity rates, the character of their immunological structures, the species composition of carrier mites and their capacity for TBE virus carriership, have been shown to exist in Estonia. TBE morbidity is characterized by 4- to 5-year cycles, the overwhelming majority of TBE cases being registered in the area of the joint habitat of both species of mites. During the epidemic season 2 peaks of morbidity rise are registered, which corresponds to peaks in the number of mites in nature. Different epidemic importance of 2 species of carrier mites in TBE morbidity in Estonia has been shown.

RESUMEN

Serum samples obtained from 44 patients with virus A hepatitis, 23 patients with virus B hepatitis, 65 patients with virus non A, non B hepatitis and 100 healthy adults were studied for the presence of Epstein-Barr (EB) virus in the indirect immunofluorescence test. In this work lymphoblastoid cell lines PH3-J-1 and CN37 were used. Among patients with different forms of hepatitis, the statistically significant elevation of the titers of antibodies to EB virus was detected only in the group of patients with virus non A, non B hepatitis, and in 6 cases the etiological role of EB virus was confirmed by serological and hematological methods.

RESUMEN

The morphological and functional changes of the single kidney were investigated in experiment on 133 dogs after removal of 45--50% of its tissue. Resection of the single kidney under normothermal conditions was established to result in the animal's death within 1--14 days due to acute renal insufficiency. The operation executed under conditions of cooling to 25 degrees C is of high risk. Resection under 5 degrees C hypothermia fails to cause an acute renal insufficiency but considerably disturbs the renal function. The use of local hypothermia to 15 degrees C in resection of the single kidney gives the optimal temperature regimen since it prevents the development of acute renal insufficiency and the compensatory-restorative processes in the kidney can develop successfully.

RESUMEN

The effect of sectioning the nephric lymphatic vessels on the functional morphology of its tissue elements has been studied in 125 dogs, providing that the other kidney, is preserved, as well as after contralateral nephrectomy and at autotransplantation. It has been stated that on the first postoperative days, in consequence of lymphostasis, protein resorption from the interstitial connective tissue is impeded. This results in stromal edema and in disturbed liquor transport performed by nephrocytes of the convoluted tubules. Protein retention in the interstilial connective tissue, despite the fact that lymph drainage is restored, produces formation of a slightly expressed diffuse nephric sclerosis with increasing number of collagenous fibrils, thickened basal membranes and accumulation of glycoproteids in them. Sectioning the nephric lymph vessels delays the development of compensatory hypertrophy signs in the nephric cellular elements. Nevertheless, as microcirculatory disturbances subside, hypertrophy and hyperplasy of cells and intracellular structures develop. Comparing dynamics of morphological changes in the autotransplanted kidney with that of a single kidney when its lymphatic vessels are cut, it is possible to conclude that it is the disorder in lymph drainage that causes a slight diffuse sclerosis in the transplanted kidney.
