RESUMEN

The ultrasmall mode volume and ultralarge local field enhancement of compact plasmonic nanocavities have been widely explored to amplify a variety of optical phenomena at the nanoscale. Other than passively generating near-field enhancements, dynamic tuning of their intensity and associated nonlinear optical processes such as second-harmonic generation (SHG) play vital roles in the field of active nanophotonics. Here we apply a host-guest molecular complex to construct a photoswitchable molecule-sandwiched metallic particle-on-film nanocavity (MPoFN) and demonstrate both light-controlled linear and nonlinear optical tuning. Under alternating illumination of ultraviolet (UV) and visible light, the photoactive plasmonic molecular nanocavity shows reversible switching of both surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and plasmon resonance. Surprisingly, we observe more significant modulation of SHG from this photoactive MPoFN, which can be explained qualitatively by the quantum conductivity theory (QCT). Our study could pave the way for developing miniaturized integrated optical circuits for ultrafast all-optical information processing and communication.

RESUMEN

In this work, we design, fabricate, and characterize a different-mode (waveguide-connected) power splitter ((W)PS) by what we believe to be a novel multi-dimension direct-binary-search algorithm that can significantly balance the device performance, time cost, and fabrication robustness by searching the state-dimension, rotation-dimension, shape-dimension, and size-dimension parameters. The (W)PS can simultaneously generate the fundamental transverse electric (TE0) and TE1 mode with the 1:1 output balance. Compared with the PS, the WPS can greatly shorten the adiabatic taper length between the single-mode waveguide and the grating coupler. The measured results of the different-mode (W)PS indicate that the insertion loss and crosstalk are less than 0.9 (1.3) dB and lower than -17.8 (-14.9) dB from 1540 nm to 1560 nm. In addition, based on the tunable tap couplers, the different-mode (W)PS can be extended to multiple output ports with different modes and different transmittances.

RESUMEN

Dinuclear aluminum methyl complexes bearing aromatic diamine-bridged tetra(phenolato) ligands and the mononuclear aluminum methyl complex with the phenylamine-bridged bis(phenolato) ligand have been synthesized and characterized. Structure determination revealed that the Al-Al distances in these dinuclear aluminum complexes are tunable by the choice of the suitable aromatic backbone of the diamine-bridged tetra(phenolato) ligands. The catalytic behaviors of these mono- and dinuclear aluminum complexes for cyclohexene oxide (CHO) polymerization were investigated. The activities of these dinuclear Al complexes were observed to increase with the decrease of Al-Al distances, and the dinuclear Al complexes appeared to have better catalytic activity than the mononuclear Al complex, even if the Al-Al distance is as long as 9.401 Å. Dinuclear aluminum complex 2, with the shortest Al-Al distance (7.236 Å), showed the highest activity toward CHO polymerization with TOFs up to 6460 h-1 in neat CHO at 30 °C. Furthermore, comparative kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization is first-order for CHO concentration, and the reaction orders for initiator concentration are different for the mono- and dinuclear Al complexes. The polymerization mechanism study revealed that both the methyl and phenolate groups were involved in the initiation process.

RESUMEN

A series of lanthanide alkoxo complexes supported by ONNO salalen ligands were synthesized and characterized. A one-pot reaction of LH2 (L = (2-O-C6H2-tBu2-3,5)CH═N-C6H4-N(CH3)CH2(2-O-C6H2-tBu2-3,5)) with LnCp3(THF) in a 1:1 molar ratio followed by the addition of 1 equiv of ROH (R = Bn, iPr, and CF3CH2), afforded the dimeric lanthanide alkoxo complexes [LLn(µ-OCH2Ph)]2 [Ln = Lu (1), Yb (2), Sm (3), Nd (4)], [L2Yb(µ-OiPr)]2 (5), and [L2Yb(µ-OCH2CF3)]2 (6) in good isolated yields. All these lanthanide complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. In addition, complex 1 has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of complexes 1, 2, 5, and 6 showed that these lanthanide alkoxo complexes are dimeric in the solid state. Complexes 1-6 showed good activity toward the homopolymerization of rac-butyrolactone (rac-BBL) to give atactic PHB, and ionic radii of central metals have profound influence on the polymerization. The polymerization behavior of l-lactide (l-LA) initiated by complex 2 was also explored. The kinetic study revealed that the polymerizations of rac-BBL and l-LA initiated by salalen lanthanide akoxide are first order for both the monomer and the initiator concentrations. Furthermore, it was found that complexes 1 and 2 showed good activity in the copolymerization of l-LA and rac-BBL, affording gradient copolymers.

RESUMEN

A series of Nd-Zn heterometallic complexes bearing o-phenylenediamine-bridged tris(phenolato) ligands (L) were synthesized and characterized. By tuning the backbones of ancillary tris(phenolato) ligands and initiating benzyloxy groups, a Nd-Zn heterometallic complex 12 (ClLNdZnOBnCF3) was found to be highly active for the copolymerization of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) to produce perfect alternating poly(cyclohexene carbonate) with a high turnover frequency up to 5640 h-1 under the polymerization of 90 °C and 20 bar CO2 pressure. The kinetics study showed that CO2/CHO copolymerization catalyzed by 12 was the first order dependence of 12 and CHO concentration and the zero-order dependence of CO2 pressure. The reaction of 12 with CO2 generated a carbonate-coordinated [NdZnNd] trinuclear complex 13, which was believed to be the key intermediate to initiate CO2/CHO copolymerization. On the basis of some experiments, a plausible synergistic polymerization mechanism was proposed.

RESUMEN

We demonstrated a mode-locked fiber laser based on a novel photonic device that combined optical microfiber coupler (OMC) and saturable absorption materials. The stable ultrafast laser was formed based on the interaction between the deposited Indium Antimonide (InSb) and the evanescent field on OMC. Different from optical microfiber (OM), OMC can directly output the mode-locked laser without additional beam splitting devices, which further improves the integrated characteristics of the fiber laser. The pulse duration of the output pulse is 405 fs at the central wavelength of 1560 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that optical microfiber coupler based saturable absorber (OMC-SA) for mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Scatophagus argus is a popular farmed fish in several countries of Southeast Asia, including China. Although S. argus has a highly promising economic value, a significant lag of breeding research severely obstructs the sustainable development of aquaculture industry. As one of the most important economic traits, growth traits are controlled by multiple gene loci called quantitative trait loci (QTLs). It is urgently needed to launch a marker assisted selection (MAS) breeding program to improve growth and other pivotal traits. Thus a high-density genetic linkage map is necessary for the fine mapping of QTLs associated with target traits. RESULTS: Using restriction site-associated DNA sequencing, 6196 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed from a full-sib mapping population for genetic map construction. A total of 6193 SNPs were grouped into 24 linkage groups (LGs), and the total length reached 2191.65 cM with an average marker interval of 0.35 cM. Comparative genome mapping revealed 23 one-to-one and 1 one-to-two syntenic relationships between S. argus LGs and Larimichthys crocea chromosomes. Based on the high-quality linkage map, a total of 44 QTLs associated with growth-related traits were identified on 11 LGs. Of which, 19 significant QTLs for body weight were detected on 9 LGs, explaining 8.8-19.6% of phenotypic variances. Within genomic regions flanking the SNP markers in QTL intervals, we predicted 15 candidate genes showing potential relationships with growth, such as Hbp1, Vgll4 and Pim3, which merit further functional exploration. CONCLUSIONS: The first SNP genetic map with a fine resolution of 0.35 cM for S. argus has been developed, which shows a high level of syntenic relationship with L. crocea genomes. This map can provide valuable information for future genetic, genomic and evolutionary studies. The QTLs and SNP markers significantly associated with growth-related traits will act as useful tools in gene mapping, map-based cloning and MAS breeding to speed up the genetic improvement in important traits of S. argus. The interesting candidate genes are promising for further investigations and have the potential to provide deeper insights into growth regulation in the future.

RESUMEN

Plant proteins are suitable and alternative to fish meals (FMs), with less cost compared with that of all other types of fish feeds. In recent years, soy protein concentrate (SPC) has emerged as a cost-effective alternative to FM; however, little is known regarding the effects of dietary SPC on general fish physiology and well-being. This study aimed to perform comprehensive physiological and transcriptomic analysis for testing the applicability of SPC as fish feeds in hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus♀ נE. lanceolatus♂) [SPC replaced 0% (CK), 30% (SPC30), and 75% (SPC75) of FM protein]. Generally, SPC30 promoted fish survival and had less effects on the phenotype, while SPC75 reduced fish survival, promoted inflammation, and regulated multiple physiological responses. Thousands of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by SPC were identified in the intestine, liver, and muscle, which were enriched in biological regulation, cellular process, metabolic process, single-organism process, cell, cell part, membrane, binding, and catalytic activity based on RNA-seq. Notably, some DEGs involved in amino acid and lipid metabolism in the digestive system highlighted the modulatory effect of SPC on these metabolic processes, consistent with the physiological responses including enzyme activities. The enriched aspects of these predominant DEGs might be directly related to the different effects of SPC30 and SPC75 on fish growth, digestibility, and underlying enzyme activities and histology. In conclusion, the comprehensive physiological and transcriptomic comparative analysis of CK, SPC30, and SPC75 was also effective in testing the applicability of SPC as fish feeds and in designing a proper diet with the best impact on the growth performance and health of fish in hybrid grouper.

RESUMEN

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is a key neuropeptide of the reproductive system. However, little is known about the role of GnRH in the spotted scat (Scatophagus argus). Here, three GnRH subtypes (cGnRH-II, sGnRH, and sbGnRH) were identified in the spotted scat. cGnRH-II and sGnRH were only expressed in the brains and gonads of both male and female fish, exhibiting a tissue-specific expression pattern, while sbGnRH was expressed at different transcription levels in all examined tissues. During ovarian maturation, hypothalamus-associated sbGnRH was upregulated, while the expression of sGnRH was variable and cGnRH-II first increased and then decreased. In vivo experiments showed that sbGnRH significantly promoted the expression of fsh and lh genes in a dose-dependent manner and exhibited a desensitization effect on lh expression at high concentrations. For sGnRH and cGnRH-II, only high concentrations could induce fsh and lh expression. Furthermore, treatment with highly concentrated sbGnRH peptide also induced fsh and lh expression, whereas the sGnRH and cGnRH-II peptides only induced fsh expression in vitro. 17ß-Estradiol (E2) significantly inhibited the expression of sbGnRH mRNA in a dose-dependent manner and did not impact sGnRH and cGnRH-II mRNA levels in vivo or in vitro. The inhibitory effect of E2 on sbGnRH expression was attenuated by the estrogen receptor (ER) broad-spectrum antagonist (fulvestrant) and the ERα-specific antagonist (methyl-piperidinopyrazole), respectively, implying that the feedback regulation on sbGnRH is mediated via ERα. This study provides a theoretical basis for the reproductive endocrinology of the spotted scat by studying GnRH.

RESUMEN

A series of homonuclear rare-earth (RE) metal complexes (1Y, 2Yb, 3Nd, and 4La) and heteronuclear RE-Zn complexes (1Y-Zn, 3Nd-Zn, and 5Sm-Zn) stabilized by ethanolamine-bridged bis(phenolato) ligands was prepared and structurally characterized. Heteronuclear complexes are assembled through bridging acetate ligands, and their formation and characterization add to the diversity of 3d-4f complexes. Their activities in mediating reactions of CO2 and epoxides were evaluated and compared. Heteronuclear RE-Zn complexes found application in the copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO2, giving rise to acetate-group-capped copolymers. Homonuclear complexes showed good activity in catalyzing the cycloaddition of variously monosubstituted epoxides and CO2 (1 bar), generating cyclic carbonates in 65-96% yield. For sterically hindered disubstituted epoxides, good yields of 60-91% were achieved in the presence of 10 bar CO2.

RESUMEN

Cationic zirconium complexes in situ generated from zirconium dibenzyl complexes bearing amine-bridged bis(phenolato) ligands have been developed to catalyze addition of C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H bonds of pyridine derivatives to alkenes. A series of zirconium complexes bearing different ligands have been synthesized, and their activities in catalyzing addition of C(sp3)-H bonds of pyridine derivatives to alkenes have been studied and compared. Both reaction activity and regioselectivity are influenced by electronic and steric properties of ligand backbones. In addition, a cationic zirconium complex has been isolated and structurally characterized to shed some light on reaction mechanism.

RESUMEN

Zirconium complexes supported by multidentate aminophenolato ligands were synthesized and characterized. The catalytic activities of neutral zirconium complexes and their cationic derivatives in the hydrophosphination of alkenes as well as heterocumulenes have been investigated and compared. Neutral complex 1 bearing a multidentate amino mono(phenolato) ligand exhibited high activity in hydrophosphination of simple alkenes, and anti-Markovnikov products were obtained in 37-94% yields at room temperature. Cationic species generated in situ from complex 3 stabilized by a bis(phenolato) ligand were found to be more active for hydrophosphination of heterocumulenes, i.e., carbodiimides and isocyanates, and gave phosphaguanidines and phosphaureas in 67-93% yields. The Lewis acidity and coordination space of metal centers are modified through changes in the ligand structure, which is found to significantly influence catalytic activity. These complexes are among the most active group 4 metal-based catalysts for hydrophosphination reactions.

RESUMEN

Ionic rare-earth metal complexes 1-4 bearing an imidazolium cation were synthesized, which, as single-component catalysts, showed good activity in catalyzing cyclic carbonate synthesis from epoxides and CO2. In the presence of 0.2 mol % catalyst, monosubstituted epoxides bearing different functional groups were converted into cyclic carbonates in 60-97% yields under atmospheric pressure. In addition, bulky/internal epoxides with low reactivity yielded cyclic carbonates in 40-95% yields. More importantly, the readily available samarium complex 2 was reused for six successive cycles without any significant loss in its catalytic activity. This is the first recyclable rare-earth metal-based catalyst in cyclic carbonate synthesis.

RESUMEN

Random copolymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) with L-lactide (LA) under mild conditions is a challenging task in polymer synthesis. Two amino-bridged bis(phenolate) neodymium complexes were synthesized and employed as efficient initiators for the copolymerization of TMC and L-LA under mild conditions to give random copolymers. NMR monitoring experiments of the chain microstructure versus polymerization time confirmed that a TMC/LA random copolymer was generated by a random copolymerization.

RESUMEN

A series of neutral lanthanide alkoxides supported by an amine-bridged bis(phenolate) ligand were synthesized, and their catalytic behaviors for the polymerization of rac-lactide (LA) and rac-ß-butyrolactone (BBL) were explored. The reactions of (C(5)H(5))(3)Ln(THF) with amine-bridged bis(phenol) LH(2) [L = Me(2)NCH(2)CH(2)N{CH(2)-(2-OC(6)H(2)Bu(t)(2)-3,5)}(2)] in a 1:1 molar ratio in THF for 1 h and then with 1 equiv each of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, benzyl alcohol, and 2-propanol gave the neutral lanthanide alkoxides LLn(OCH(2)CF(3))(THF) [Ln = Y (1), Yb (2), Er (3), Sm (4)], LY(OCH(2)Ph)(THF) (5), and LY(OPr(i))(THF) (6), respectively. These lanthanide alkoxides are sensitive to moisture, and the yttrium complex [(LY)(2)(µ-OPr(i))(µ-OH)] (7) was also isolated as a byproduct during the synthesis of complex 6. Complexes 1-6 were well characterized by elemental analyses and IR and NMR spectroscopy in the cases of complexes 1 and 4-6. The definitive molecular structures of all of these complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. It was found that complexes 1-6 can initiate efficiently the ring-opening polymerization of rac-LA and rac-BBL in a controlled manner. For rac-LA, polymerization gave polymers with very narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI ≤ 1.12) and very high heterotacticity (P(r) up to 0.99). The observed activity-increasing order is in agreement with the order of the ionic radii, whereas the order for stereoselectivity is in the reverse order. For rac-BBL polymerization, the resultant polymers have narrow molecular distributions (PDI ≤ 1.26) and high syndiotacticity (P(r) up to 0.83). It is worth noting that the activity-decreasing order Yb > Er > Y >> Sm is observed for rac-BBL polymerization, which is opposite to the order of ionic radii and to the order of activity for rac-LA polymerization. The ionic radii of lanthanide metals have no obvious effect on the stereoselectivity for rac-BBL polymerization, which is quite different from that for rac-LA polymerization. End-group analysis of the oligomer of rac-BBL suggested that elimination side reactions occurred slowly in these systems, which led to chain cleavage and the formation of crotonate (and carboxy) end groups.

RESUMEN

The monoamido lanthanide complexes stabilized by Schiff base ligand L(2)LnN(TMS)(2) (L = 3,5-Bu(t)(2)-2-(O)-C(6)H(2)CH═N-8-C(9)H(6)N, Ln = Yb (1), Y (2), Eu (3), Nd (4), and La (5)) were synthesized in good yields by the reactions of Ln[N(TMS)(2)](3) with 1.8 equiv of HL in hexane at room temperature. It was found that the stability of 1-5 depends greatly on the size of the lanthanide metals with the increasing trend of Yb ≈ Y < Nd < La. The amine elimination of Ln[N(TMS)(2)](3) with the bulky bidentate Schiff base HL' (L' = 3,5-Bu(t)(2)-2-(O)-C(6)H(2)CH═N-2,6-Pr(i)(2)-C(6)H(3)) afforded the monoamido lanthanide complexes L'(2)LnN(TMS)(2) (Ln = Yb (9), Y (10), Nd (11), and La (12)). While the amine elimination with the less bulky Schiff base HL'' (L'' = 3,5-Bu(t)(2)-2-(O)-C(6)H(2)CH═N-2,6-Me(2)-C(6)H(3)) yielded the desired monoamido complexes with the small metals of Y and Yb, L''(2)LnN(TMS)(2) (Ln = Yb (13) and Y (14)), and the more stable tris-Schiff base complexes with the large metals of La and Nd, yielded L''(3)Ln as the only product. Complexes 1-14 were fully characterized including X-ray crystal structural analysis. Complexes 1-5, 10, and 14 can serve as the efficient catalysts for addition of amines to carbodiimides, and the catalytic activity is greatly affected by the lanthanide metals with the active sequence of Yb < Y < Eu ≈ Nd ≈ La.

RESUMEN

The wild populations of the commercially valuable ornamental fish species, Betta splendens, and its germplasm resources have long been threatened by habitat degradation and contamination with artificially bred fish. Because of the lack of effective marker resources, population genetics research projects are severely hampered. To generate genetic data for developing polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and identifying functional genes, transcriptomic analysis was performed. Illumina paired-end sequencing yielded 105,505,486 clean reads, which were then de novo assembled into 69,836 unigenes. Of these, 35,751 were annotated in the non-redundant, EuKaryotic Orthologous Group, Swiss-Prot, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and Gene Ontology databases. A total of 12,751 SSR loci were identified from the transcripts and 7970 primer pairs were designed. One hundred primer pairs were randomly selected for PCR validation and 53 successfully generated target amplification products. Further validation demonstrated that 36% (n = 19) of the 53 amplified loci were polymorphic. These data could not only enrich the genetic information for the identification of functional genes but also effectively facilitate the development of SSR markers. Such knowledge would accelerate further studies on the genetic variation and evolution, comparative genomics, linkage mapping and molecular breeding in B. splendens.

RESUMEN

Four homodinuclear rare earth metal (RE) complexes 1-4 bearing a multidentate diglycolamine-bridged bis(phenolate) ligand were synthesized. In addition, seven heterobimetallic RE-Zn complexes 5-11 were prepared through a one-pot strategy. In these heterobimetallic complexes, two RE centers are bridged by either Zn(OAc)2 or Zn(OBn)2 moieties. All complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy (in the case of diamagnetic complexes 1, 4, 7 and 11). Moreover, the multi-nuclear structures of complexes 4 and 11 in solution were also studied by 1H DOSY spectroscopy. These complexes were applied in catalyzing the coupling reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides. Zn(OAc)2- and Zn(OBn)2-bridged heterobimetallic complexes showed comparable catalytic activities under ambient conditions and were more active than monometallic RE complexes. Significant synergistic effect in heterobimetallic complexes is observed. Mono-substituted epoxides were converted into cyclic carbonates under 1 atm CO2 at 25 °C in 88-96% yields, whereas di-substituted epoxides reacted under 1 atm CO2 at higher temperatures in 40-80% yields.

RESUMEN

In order to meet the needs of phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation technology for interferometric fiber optic hydrophones, we proposed an optical microfiber all-optical phase modulator (OMAOPM) based on the photo-induced thermal phase shift effect, which can be used as a phase carrier generation component, so as to make the modulation efficiency and working bandwidth of this type of modulator satisfy the requirements of underwater acoustic signal demodulation applications. We analyzed the modulation principle of this modulator and optimized the structural parameters of the optical microfiber (OM) when the waist length and waist diameter of OM are 15 mm and 1.4 µm, respectively. The modulation amplitude of the modulator can reach 1 rad, which can meet the requirements of sensing applications. On this basis, the fiber optical hydrophone PGC-Atan demodulation system was constructed, and the simulated underwater acoustic signal test demodulation research was carried out. Experimental results showed that the system can demodulate underwater acoustic signals below 1 kHz.

RESUMEN

The spotted scat (Scatophagus argus) is an economically important cultured marine fish that exhibits a typical sexual size dimorphism (SSD). SSD has captivated considerable curiosity for farmed fish production; however, up till now the exact underlying mechanism remains largely unclear. As an important digestive and metabolic organ, the liver plays key roles in the regulation of fish growth. It is necessary to elucidate its significance as a downstream component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-liver axis in the formation of SSD. In this study, the liver physiological differences between the sexes were evaluated in S. argus, and the activity of several digestive and metabolic enzymes were affected by sex. Females had higher amylase, protease, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities, while males exhibited markedly higher hepatic lipase and antioxidant enzymes activities. A comparative transcriptomics was then performed to characterize the responsive genes. Illumina sequencing generated 272.6 million clean reads, which were assembled into 79,115 unigenes. A total of 259 differentially expressed genes were identified and a few growth-controlling genes such as igf1 and igfbp1 exhibited female-biased expression. Further analyses showed that several GO terms and pathways associated with metabolic process, particularly lipid and energy metabolisms, were significantly enriched. The male liver showed a more active mitochondrial energy metabolism, implicating an increased energy expenditure associated with reproduction. Collectively, the female-biased growth dimorphism of S. argus may be partially attributed to sexually dimorphic metabolism in the liver. These findings would facilitate further understanding of the nature of SSD in teleost fish.
