RESUMEN

Given the generally stressful job demands of the hospitality industry during the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the work passion and emotions of hotel employees is particularly important. Based on the conservation of resources theory and the job demands-resources model, this study develops a multiple mediation model to investigate how frontline hotel employees with different types of work passion choose emotional labor strategies under the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of different choices on their service quality. A two-stage survey using data from 206 frontline employees of five-star hotels in China explored how work passion influences emotional labor and thereby affects emotional expression as well as service quality. The results showed emotional labor partially mediates the relationship between work passion and emotional expression, which in turn mediates the relationship between emotional labor and service quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

Zinc is the most common trace mineral after iron in the human body. In organisms, zinc transporters help zinc influx and efflux from cells. A previous study has reported that Zip2 was up-regulated over 27-fold in human monocytic THP-1 cells, when intracellular zinc was depleted by TPEN. Our study found Zip2 was over-expressed in leukocytes of asthmatic infants, especially those in which the serum zinc level was lower than those in healthy infants. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients have significantly low serum zinc levels. Here we investigated whether Zip2 level was changed in the patients with PTB. Zip2 mRNA and protein levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from PTB (n1=23) and healthy controls (n2=42) were detected by quantitative real-time PCR and western blot, respectively. mRNA expression levels of another four zinc transporters, Zip1, Zip6, Zip8 and ZnT1, were detected by quantitative real-time PCR. Zip2 mRNA level was significantly up-regulated in PTB patients (P=0.001), and Zip8 mRNA level was significantly down-regulated compared with control individuals (P<0.001). In contrast, there were no significant changes in mRNA levels of Zip1, Zip6 and ZnT1 in either group (P>0.05). Zip2 protein expression levels increased in PTB patients compared with control individuals. Our study found that knockdown of ZIP2 with siRNA caused a decrease in Zip2 levels in PBMC of PTB patients, while reducing the expression of INF-γ (P<0.01) and increasing the expression of IL-6(P<0.01). These data provide evidence that increased expression of Zip2 gene is closely associated with immunity of PTB patients, suggesting that the Zip2 gene may play a key role in the initial infection control of the human body, by promoting and maintaining the immune response of adaptive T cells.

Recent millimetre-scale studies proposed that ultrasonic vibrations (UVs) promote material flow in welding joints via acting on dislocations. Here, we report atomic-scale results from molecular dynamics simulations of Mg-Al nanolayers joined by two means: only heat and heat accompanied by UVs (vibration amplitude, B = 0.1-10 nm and vibration frequency, f = 5.7-100 GHz) over the temperature range of 600-800 K. Comparative and quantitative analyses were performed on the structural evolution (including atomic diffusion, arrangements and distributions) of the joining Mg/Al interfaces and motions of dislocations, as well as on the influences of the vibration amplitude and vibration frequency on these two features. The results show that the applied UV with large vibration amplitudes (B ≥ 5 nm) and a low vibration frequency (f = 5.7 GHz) significantly facilitates atomic diffusion (10-1000 times as fast as that in the case free of UVs) and formations and motions of dislocations, resulting in nonuniform-to-uniform structural transitions and increases in the thicknesses of the joined Mg/Al interfaces. These results provide a way to understand how the applied UV acts on dislocations and atomic diffusion during the UV-assisted welding processes of Mg-Al and other systems.

Several observational studies have shown that postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) may significantly worsen the prognosis of a transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the recent evidence on the impact of AKI on clinical outcomes following TAVI. A comprehensive search in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library was performed for relevant studies by two independent investigators. We pooled the odds ratio (OR) from individual studies, and performed heterogeneity, quality assessment and publication bias analysis. Forty-three eligible studies comprising 544,112 patients were included. Postoperative AKI not only significantly increased the risk for short-term and long-term all-cause mortality (OR 6.25, 95% CI 5.72-6.83, P < 0.00001; OR 3.49, 95% CI 2.78-4.40, P < 0.00001, respectively), but also increased the risk for early myocardial infarction (OR 3.98, 95% CI 1.90-8.31, P = 0.0002), major and life-threatening bleeding (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.12-2.03, P = 0.007; OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.80-3.06, P < 0.00001, respectively), major vascular complications (OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.30-2.18, P < 0.0001), need for blood transfusion (OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.89-2.46, P < 0.00001) renal replacement therapy (OR 22.36, 95% CI 11.88-42.12, P = 0.0002) and cerebrovascular accidents (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.23-2.98, P = 0.004). Acute kidney injury following TAVI is associated with increased postoperative mortality and morbidity. Future efforts are required to determine whether early prevention of post-procedural AKI after TAVI impacts upon clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The tuberization mechanism of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) has long been studied using various approaches. Morphological data have revealed that the tuberizing events result from the activation of the cambium, followed by cell proliferation. However, uncertainties still remain regarding the regulators participating in this signal-transduction pathway. An attempt was made to characterize the role of one MADS-box transcription factor, which was preferentially expressed in sweet potato roots at the early tuberization stage. METHODS: A differential expression level of IbMADS1 (Ipomoea batatas MADS-box 1) was detected temporally and spatially in sweet potato tissues. IbMADS1 responses to tuberization-related hormones were assessed. In order to identify the evolutionary significance, the expression pattern of IbMADS1 was surveyed in two tuber-deficient Ipomoea relatives, I. leucantha and I. trifida, and compared with sweet potato. In functional analyses, potato (Solanum tuberosum) was employed as a heterologous model. The resulting tuber morphogenesis was examined anatomically in order to address the physiological function of IbMADS1, which should act similarly in sweet potato. KEY RESULTS: IbMADS1 was preferentially expressed as tuberous root development proceeded. Its expression was inducible by tuberization-related hormones, such as jasmonic acid and cytokinins. In situ hybridization data showed that IbMADS1 transcripts were specifically distributed around immature meristematic cells within the stele and lateral root primordia. Inter-species examination indicated that IbMADS1 expression was relatively active in sweet potato roots, but undetectable in tuber-deficient Ipomoea species. IbMADS1-transformed potatoes exhibited tuber morphogenesis in the fibrous roots. The partial swellings along fibrous roots were mainly due to anomalous proliferation and differentiation in the xylem. CONCLUSIONS: Based on this study, it is proposed that IbMADS1 is an important integrator at the initiation of tuberization. As a result, the initiation and development of tuberous roots seems to be well regulated by a network involving a MADS-box gene in which such hormones as jasmonic acid and cytokinins may act as trigger factors.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the specific and sensitive biomarkers for gastric cancer detection, a surface-enhanced laser desorption and ionization protein chip mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) was used to generate protein profiles of serum in gastric cancer at a high-risk area. METHODS: A total of 36 gastric cancer cases and 46 subjects with superficial gastritis were selected from Linqu county, Shandong province, a high-risk area of gastric cancer. Serum samples were collected and Q10 protein chips were used to detect the serum proteomic patterns, and the sensitivity and specificity were assessed. RESULTS: For the comparison of the gastric cancer group (26 out of 36 gastric cancer cases) versus superficial gastritis group (37 out of 46 subjects), the 6 most discriminating peaks (m/z 8587, 6945, 8243, 3899, 7035, and 9943) were identified by the ProteinChip Data Analysis System (ZUCIPDAS). The sensitivity and specificity of this pattern were 88.5% and 97.3%, respectively. A total of 19 subjects (10 gastric cancer cases and 9 superficial gastritis subjects) was selected to test the accuracy of this pattern by using blind method, and the sensitivity and specificity were 80.0% and 88.9% ,respectively. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that SELDI profiling of serum might be a potential for gastric cancer detection and screening in high-risk population.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus on hospitalization costs in older patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of data from the case retrieval system of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University located in Jinan city of Shandong Province was done for patients with acute MI from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2012. RESULTS: Stenting was an important factor affecting older patients' total hospitalization costs (ß=0.685, P=0.000) and treatment costs during the follow-up period (duration of hospital stay only, ß=0.508, P=0.000). Stenting was also a protective factor in the prevention of acute heart failure (HF) in older patients with acute MI during the follow-up period (odds ratio 0.189, 95% confidence interval 0.059-0.602, P=0.005). Implementation of percutaneous coronary intervention reduced the incidence of acute HF in older inpatients with acute MI (27.8% versus 4.3%, P=0.001) and without diabetes (18.2% versus 3.8%, P=0.001). Moreover, among the elderly, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio estimate for implementing percutaneous coronary intervention in diabetic patients was higher than in nondiabetic patients. CONCLUSION: Stenting was a protective factor for preventing acute HF in the elderly during the follow-up period. From the perspective of reducing the incidence of acute HF in inpatients, implementation of percutaneous coronary intervention after an acute MI is more cost-effective in older patients with diabetes mellitus than in those without it.
