With the rapid development of high-power electronic instruments and communication technology, efficient electromagnetic shielding materials with strong absorption of electromagnetic waves and low reflection characteristics have become the focus of the world's attention. This study designs and synthesizes N-doped carbon-coated hollow Fe3O4 nanospheres (Fe3O4@NC) by spraying Ag nanowires (AgNWs) on textiles as conductive networks. Because of the high permeability and hollow structure Fe3O4@NC, electromagnetic wave goes through a unique process of "absorption, reflection, and reabsorption" when it passes through the surface of the composite textile. In X-band (≈8.2-12.4 GHz), the average electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) reaches 50.1 dB, while the reflectance shielding efficiency (SER) is only 2.6 dB, and the average reflectance power coefficient (R) is as low as 0.45. The composite fabric has excellent properties and provides an effective strategy for electromagnetic interference shielding based on absorption.

The atomically dispersed Fe-N4 active site presents enormous potential for various renewable energy conversions. Despite its already remarkable catalytic performance, the local atomic microenvironment of each Fe atom can be regulated to further enhance its efficiency. Herein, a novel conceptual strategy that utilizes a simple salt-template polymerization method to simultaneously adjust the first coordination shell (Fe-N3 S1 ) and second coordination shell (C-S-C, a structure similar to thiophene) of Fe-N4 isolated atoms is proposed. Theoretical studies suggest that this approach can redistribute charge density in the MN4 moiety, lowering the d-band center of the metal site. This weakens the binding of oxygenated intermediates, enhancing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity when compared to only implementing coordination shell regulation. Based on the above discovery, a single Fe atom electrocatalyst with the optimal Fe-N3 S1 -S active moiety incorporated in nitrogen, sulfur co-doped graphene (Fe-SAc/NSG) is designed and synthesized. The Fe-SAc/NSG catalyst exhibits excellent alkaline ORR activity, exceeding benchmark Pt/C and most Fe-SAc ORR electrocatalysts, as well as superior stability in Zn-air battery. This work aims to pave the way for creating highly active single metal atom catalysts through the localized regulation of their atomic structure.

Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a wide pH range and industrial large-scale hydrogen production is critical and challenging. Here, a tailoring strategy is developed to fabricate an outstanding HER catalyst in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes containing high-density atomically dispersed Ru sites anchored in the CoP nanoparticles supported on carbon spheres (NC@RuSA -CoP). The obtained NC@RuSA -CoP catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance with overpotentials of only 15 and 13 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH and 0.5 m H2 SO4 , respectively. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the strong interaction between the Ru site and the CoP can effectively optimize the electronic structure of Ru sites to reduce the hydrogen binding energy and the water dissociation energy barrier. The constructed alkaline anion exchange membrane water electrolyze (AAEMWE) demonstrates remarkable durability and an industrial-level current density of 1560 mA cm-2 at 1.8 V. This strategy provides a new perspective on the design of Ru-based electrocatalysts with suitable intermediate adsorption strengths and paves the way for the development of highly active electrocatalysts for industrial-scale hydrogen production.

Objective: This study focused on the clinical value of serum soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) levels in evaluating the severity of bronchial asthma (BA). Methods: Serum sRAGE expression was measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, eosinophils (EOS) count was measured by using an automatic blood cell counter, and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) was measured by pulmonary function analyzer in 120 patients with BA, 40 patients with non-BA pulmonary disease, and 40 healthy controls. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to analyze the clinical value of sRAGE expression levels, EOS counts, and FEV1 level to assess the severity of illness in the patients with BA. Results: Compared with the healthy controls and the patients without BA, the patients with BA had the lowest serum sRAGE expression level (47.36 ± 6.3 ng/L versus 75.3 ± 6.3 ng/L versus 67.5 ± 5.06 ng/L; p < 0.05), the highest EOS count (231.2 ± 18.3 106/L versus 175.9 ± 15.6 106/L versus 197.8 ± 19.6 106/L; p < 0.05), and the lowest FEV1 level (1.19 ± 0.15 L versus 1.57 ± 0.2 L versus 1.3 ± 0.17 L; p < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that the serum sRAGE expression levels were notably negatively correlated with the EOS counts (r value of -0.471, p < 0.05) but significantly positively linked to FEV1 levels (r value of 0.362, p < 0.05). Serum sRAGE expression levels could help in accurately diagnosing patients with severe BA (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.904), whereas prediction in the patients with mild BA was achieved by EOS counts (AUC = 0.857). Conclusion: The serum sRAGE level has potential value in diagnosing the severity of BA, which is conducive to identifying patients with severe BA and guiding in development of new therapeutic strategies.

In vitro digestion of curdlan oligosaccharides (COSs), pullulan oligosaccharides (POSs), xanthan gum oligosaccharides (XGOSs) and gellan gum oligosaccharides (GGOSs) was investigated. These four oligosaccharides showed resistance to simulated saliva and gastric and small intestinal fluid. In further fermentation with faecal microbiota from healthy subjects and type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients, COS fermentation significantly increased the abundance of Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. and the production of short-chain fatty acids in healthy and T2D groups. Digestion of XGOS enhanced the growth of the Clostridium leptum subgroup and significantly increased butyric acid production in healthy and T2D groups. Sole fermentation with COS, POS, XGOS and GGOS exhibited different metabolic profiles between healthy and T2D groups, and more small molecule polyols were produced in the T2D group than in the healthy group. This study provides a novel perspective on the reconstruction of gut microbiota and metabolism by POS, COS, GGOS and XGOS intervention.

Background: YKL-40, which is also known as Chitiniase 3-like 1, has been found to be up-regulated in many autoimmune diseases including asthma, systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus, etc. However, the relationship between serum levels of YKL-40 and one another common autoinmmue thyroid disease - Graves' disease (GD) has not yet been investigated.Objective: The current study was performed to investigate the correlation of serum YKL-40 levels with disease severity of initially diagnosed GD.Methods: A total of 142 newly diagnosed active GD and 137 healthy individuals were enrolled in the study. Methimazole was given to 55 GD patients and then 2-month study of follow-up was performed. A commercial ELISA kit was applied for the detection of YKL-40 in serum. Degree of goiter was assessed according to Pérez's Grade. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was carried out to detect the diagnostic value of serum YKL-40 with regard to goiter degree. The velocity of the peak systolic blood-flow and the thyroid tissue blood flow (TBF) were examined using Color Flow Doppler ultrasonography (CFDU).Results: The patients with GD exhibited dramatically higher YKL-40 in serum compared to those of healthy controls (606.1 ± 149.8 pg/mL vs. 397.4 ± 95.1 pg/mL, P < 0.001). Positive associations of YKL-40 with free T3 (FT3) and T4 (FT4), as well as the negative correlation of YKL-40 with TSH in serum, were observed. Additionally, the YKL-40 in serum was dramatically reduced after methimazole intervention, and the correlation of the decline with the reduced FT3 and FT4 was also found (all P < 0.001). Serum YKL-40 levels were positively correlated with goiter degree. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that serum YKL-40 concentration may act as a decent marker for goiter degree. The positive correlations of YKL-40 in serum with the average superior thyroid artery velocity (STV) and thyroid tissue blood flow (TBF) were also observed.Conclusion: Our findings implicated that YKL-40 may be closely connected to the pathogenesis of GD. Increased YKL-40 levels are linked with disease severity of initially diagnosed GD.

BACKGROUND: The chemokine C-C motif ligand 11, also known as eotaxin-1, has been identified as a novel mediator of inflammatory bone resorption. However, little is known regarding a potential role for CCL11/Eotaxin-1 in postmenopausal osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: The scope of this study was to explore the relationship between serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 concentrations and disease progression of postmenopausal females with osteoporosis. METHODS: A total of 83 postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis were enrolled. Meanwhile, 82 postmenopausal women with normal bone mineral density (BMD) and 85 healthy controls inner child-bearing age were enrolled as control. The Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to examine the BMDs at the femoral neck, lumbar spine 1-4 and total hip of all participants. Serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We also included inflammation marker interleukin-6 (IL-6) as well as a serum marker of bone resorption C-telopeptide cross-linked collagen type 1 (CTX-1). The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were recorded to evaluate the clinical severity in POMP females. RESULTS: Serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 levels were significantly elevated in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients PMOP patients compared with PMNOP and healthy controls. We observed a significant negative correlation of serum CCL11/Eotaxin-1 levels with lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip BMD. Furthermore, serum CCL11/ Eotaxin-1 concentrations were also positively related to the VAS and ODI scores. Last, serum CCL11/ Eotaxin-1 concentrations were positively associated with IL-6 and CTX-1 levels. These correlations remain significant after adjusting for age and BMI. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that CCL11/Eotaxin-1 could serve as an independent marker. CONCLUSIONS: Serum CCL 11/Eotaxin-1 may serve as a candidate biomarker for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Therapeutics targeting CCL11/Eotaxin-1 and its related signalling way to prevent and slow progression of PMOP deserve further study.

Background: The neuropeptide vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) has been identified as inhibiting osteoclastogenesis and suppressing inflammation. Objective: This study was conducted to examine serum VIP levels in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) patients and explore the correlation of serum VIP levels with disease severity of PMOP. Methods: A total of 106 postmenopausal women diagnosed as osteoporotic were enrolled in the study and 102 postmenopausal women with normal bone mineral density (BMD) were enrolled as controls. BMD at the femoral neck (FN), lumbar spine 1-4, and total hip were examined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Genant semiquantitative grading was used for vertebral morphometry and fracture. Serum VIP levels were tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum inflammatory factor interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), osteoclastic activity marker tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b), and estrogen-2 (E2) were also examined. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses was performed to determine the diagnostic values of serum VIP, IL-1ß, TRCAP-5, and E2 with regard to Genant grade. Results: Our findings demonstrated a reduction in the serum level of VIP expressed in PMOP patients compared with controls. In the PMOP group, patients with lumbar fracture had significantly lower serum VIP concentrations in comparison with healthy controls. Serum VIP concentrations were positively associated with BMD at the FN, lumbar spine 1-4, and total hip. We also observed that serum VIP levels were positively correlated with E2 levels but negatively correlated with IL-1ß and TRCAP-5 levels. In addition, ROC analysis found that reduction of serum VIP in combination with elevation of TRACP-5b may serve as an indicator of a severe Genant grade. Conclusions: Attenuated serum VIP levels were linked to disease severity of PMOP and may act as a protective marker for PMOP.

RESUMEN

In this work, a 2D covalent organometallic nanosheet (COMS) was designed and successfully synthesized through the one-step conjunction of a terpyridine-metal-terpyridine (TMT) sandwich coordinate motif with borate ester covalent heterocyclic (B3O3) linkage via the condensation of boronic acid. The obtained 2D COMS with a cobalt coordination center (2D COMS-Co) showed promising p-type semiconducting properties.
