Substantial leaps in the understanding of quantum systems have been driven by exploring geometry, topology, dimensionality and interactions in ultracold atomic ensembles1-6. A system where atoms evolve while confined on an ellipsoidal surface represents a heretofore unexplored geometry and topology. Realizing an ultracold bubble-potentially Bose-Einstein condensed-relates to areas of interest including quantized-vortex flow constrained to a closed surface topology, collective modes and self-interference via bubble expansion7-17. Large ultracold bubbles, created by inflating smaller condensates, directly tie into Hubble-analogue expansion physics18-20. Here we report observations from the NASA Cold Atom Lab21 facility onboard the International Space Station of bubbles of ultracold atoms created using a radiofrequency-dressing protocol. We observe bubble configurations of varying size and initial temperature, and explore bubble thermodynamics, demonstrating substantial cooling associated with inflation. We achieve partial coverings of bubble traps greater than one millimetre in size with ultracold films of inferred few-micrometre thickness, and we observe the dynamics of shell structures projected into free-evolving harmonic confinement. The observations are among the first measurements made with ultracold atoms in space, using perpetual freefall to explore quantum systems that are prohibitively difficult to create on Earth. This work heralds future studies (in orbital microgravity) of the Bose-Einstein condensed bubble, the character of its excitations and the role of topology in its evolution.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Guidelines suggest a single screening esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in patients with multiple risk factors for Barrett's esophagus (BE). We aimed to determine BE prevalence and predictors on repeat EGD after a negative initial EGD, using 2 large national databases (GI Quality Improvement Consortium [GIQuIC] and TriNetX). METHODS: Patients who underwent at least 2 EGDs were included and those with BE or esophageal adenocarcinoma detected at initial EGD were excluded. Patient demographics and prevalence of BE on repeat EGD were collected. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to assess for independent risk factors for BE detected on the repeat EGD. RESULTS: In 214,318 and 153,445 patients undergoing at least 2 EGDs over a median follow-up of 28-35 months, the prevalence of BE on repeat EGD was 1.7% in GIQuIC and 3.4% in TriNetX, respectively (26%-45% of baseline BE prevalence). Most (89%) patients had nondysplastic BE. The prevalence of BE remained stable over time (from 1 to >5 years from negative initial EGD) but increased with increasing number of risk factors. BE prevalence in a high-risk population (gastroesophageal reflux disease plus ≥1 risk factor for BE) was 3%-4%. CONCLUSIONS: In this study of >350,000 patients, rates of BE on repeat EGD ranged from 1.7%-3.4%, and were higher in those with multiple risk factors. Most were likely missed at initial evaluation, underscoring the importance of a high-quality initial endoscopic examination. Although routine repeat endoscopic BE screening after a negative initial examination is not recommended, repeat screening may be considered in carefully selected patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and ≥2 risk factors for BE, potentially using nonendoscopic tools.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted endoscopy practices, creating unprecedented decreases in cancer screening and surveillance services. We aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on the proportion of patients diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus (BE) and BE-related dysplasia and adherence to established quality indicators. METHODS: Data from all esophagogastroduodenoscopies in the GI Quality Improvement Consortium, a national repository of matched endoscopy and pathology data, were analyzed from January 2018 to December 2022. Four cohorts were created based on procedure date and COVID-19 data: pre-pandemic (January 2018 to February 2020), pandemic-phase I (March 2020 to July 2020), pandemic-phase II (August 2020 to May 2021), and pandemic-phase III (June 2021 to December 2022). Observed and expected number of BE and BE-related dysplasia cases per month and adherence to the Seattle biopsy protocol and recommended surveillance intervals for nondysplastic BE (NDBE) were evaluated. RESULTS: Among 2,446,857 esophagogastroduodenoscopies performed during the study period, 104,124 (4.3%) had pathology-confirmed BE. The histologic distribution was 87.4% NDBE, 1.8% low-grade dysplasia, 2.4% indefinite for dysplasia, and 1.4% high-grade dysplasia. The number of monthly BE (-47.9% pandemic-phase I, -21.5% pandemic-phase II, and -19.0% pandemic-phase III) and BE-related dysplasia (high-grade dysplasia: 41.2%, -27.7%, and -19.0%; low-grade dysplasia: 49.1%, -35.3%, and -26.5%; any dysplasia: 46.7%, -32.3%, and -27.9%) diagnoses were significantly reduced during the pandemic phases compared with pre-pandemic data. Adherence rates to the Seattle protocol and recommended surveillance intervals for NDBE did not decline during the pandemic. DISCUSSION: There was a significant decline in the number of BE and BE-related dysplasia diagnoses during the COVID-19 pandemic, with an approximately 50% reduction in the number of cases of dysplasia diagnosed in the early pandemic. The absence of a compensatory increase in diagnoses in the pandemic-phase II and III periods may result in deleterious downstream effects on esophageal adenocarcinoma morbidity and mortality.

We use one-photon excitation to promote K-shell electrons of formic acid (which has a planar equilibrium structure) to an antibonding π^{*} orbital. The excited molecule is known to have a (chiral) pyramidal equilibrium structure. In our experiment, we determine the handedness of the excited molecule by imaging the momenta of charged fragments, which occur after its Coulomb explosion triggered by Auger-Meitner decay cascades succeeding the excitation. We find that the handedness of the excited molecule depends on its spatial orientation with respect to the propagation (or polarization) direction of the exciting photon. The effect is largely independent of the exact polarization properties of the light driving the 1sâπ^{*} excitation.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) poses a significant global health challenge, with symptom presentation potentially varying between adolescents and adults. Adolescence is a critical period marked by heightened vulnerability to interpersonal stresses, yet the impact of these stresses on the structure of depressive symptoms is not well understood. Recognizing the cultural nuances in how depression manifests among adolescents is crucial. To this end, this paper employs a network analysis approach, utilizing a comprehensive symptom checklist from the Multidimensional Depression Assessment Scale (MDAS). Our study investigates the role of interpersonal symptoms within the broader cluster of emotional, cognitive, and somatic symptoms and explores variations in adolescent groups in four Asian and European regions. METHODS: We recruited a diverse sample of 6,348 adolescents aged 12 to 18 from Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UK, China, and the Netherlands using the Qualtrics platform. Employing the Gaussian Graphical Model, we established a network model of depressive symptoms as measured by the MDAS, segregating the sample into Asian and European regions to examine the interconnections between them. The study focused on identifying central symptom nodes and comparing the network structures between the two groups. RESULTS: The analysis identified feeling worthless, low energy, being a burden to others, and low mood as central symptoms of depression. Notably, there were significant differences in the connections between depressive symptoms among Asian (Hong Kong, China and Taiwan) and European (UK and the Netherlands) adolescents, highlighting cultural variations in how interpersonal symptoms interact with emotional, cognitive, and somatic symptoms. CONCLUSION: This study is pioneering in applying network analysis to include interpersonal symptoms in examining depression among a diverse adolescent population. It demonstrates that interpersonal symptoms are integral to the central features of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, our findings suggest that, compared to their UK and Dutch peers, interpersonal symptoms in Asian adolescents are uniquely connected to other symptom clusters, reflecting distinct cultural patterns. LIMITATIONS: The study engaged a broad community sample; however, future research could benefit from including a larger sample size to allow for a more detailed analysis of a greater number of symptom nodes.

We applied reaction microscopy to elucidate fast non-adiabatic dissociation dynamics of deuterated water molecules after direct photo-double ionization at 61 eV with synchrotron radiation. For the very rare D+ + O+ + D breakup channel, the particle momenta, angular, and energy distributions of electrons and ions, measured in coincidence, reveal distinct electronic dication states and their dissociation pathways via spin-orbit coupling and charge transfer at crossings and seams on the potential energy surfaces. Notably, we could distinguish between direct and fast sequential dissociation scenarios. For the latter case, our measurements reveal the geometry and orientation of the deuterated water molecule with respect to the polarization vector that leads to this rare 3-body molecular breakup channel. Aided by multi-reference configuration-interaction calculations, the dissociation dynamics could be traced on the relevant potential energy surfaces and particularly their crossings and seams. This approach also unraveled the ultrafast time scales governing these processes.

PURPOSE: PRESTO 3 evaluated nurses' preference for the Somatuline® Autogel® syringe versus the Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe after injection-pad testing. METHODS: This international simulated-use study included oncology/endocrinology nurses with ≥ 1 years' experience in managing neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) and/or acromegaly. Each nurse tested both syringes twice in a randomised order before completing an electronic survey. The primary objective was to assess overall preference (%, 95% confidence interval [CI]) for the Somatuline Autogel syringe versus the Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe. Secondary objectives included rating syringe performance and ranking the importance of syringe attributes. RESULTS: Ninety-four nurses were enrolled: mean age, 41.0 (SD, 11.5) years. The percentage of nurses stating a preference ("strong" or "slight") for the Somatuline Autogel syringe (86.2% [95% CI 77.5-92.4%]) was significantly higher than 50% (p < 0.0001). Performance rating was significantly higher for the Somatuline Autogel syringe versus Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe for 10 of the 11 attributes tested (p < 0.05). The syringe attributes considered most important when injecting patients in routine clinical practice were "easy to use from preparation to injection" (30.9%) and "comfortable to handle during use from preparation to injection" (16.0%). The attribute most commonly rated as least important was "fast administration from preparation to injection" (26.6%). CONCLUSION: Nurses strongly preferred the user experience of the Somatuline Autogel syringe over the Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe. "Ease of use" and "comfortable to handle" were the most important syringe attributes, and performance rating was significantly higher with Somatuline Autogel versus Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe for all but one attribute.
Drugs called somatostatin analogues (SSAs) can be used to treat patients with neuroendocrine tumours or acromegaly over a prolonged period of time. SSAs are given as injections and act by slowing the production of hormones by the body and in some cases reducing the growth of the tumour. To help to provide the best care possible, it is important that the syringe used for the injection is easy to use and delivers the SSA effectively. Somatuline Autogel is a syringe that can be used to inject an SSA called lanreotide. Previous studies showed that patients and nurses preferred the injection experience when using the Somatuline Autogel syringe compared with a syringe used to inject another SSA called octreotide long-acting release. A new syringe used for lanreotide injections has been developed recently by a company called Pharmathen. In the PRESTO 3 study, we compared the user experience of the Somatuline Autogel syringe and the Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe. We asked 94 nurses from Europe and the US to test both syringes, in a randomised order, using injection pads, and then to answer questions about their overall preference between the two syringes and how well the syringe performed for a set of syringe features. Overall, 86% of nurses preferred the Somatuline Autogel syringe over the Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe. Of the 11 features of the syringe that we assessed, 10 were rated higher for the Somatuline Autogel syringe than the Lanreotide Pharmathen syringe. The syringe features "ease of use" and "comfortable to handle" were considered the most important. The results of the PRESTO 3 study indicated that there is a difference in the user experience between the syringes, particularly for confidence and ease of use, and that it is important to offer syringe choices to nurses who are using SSA injections to treat patients.

BACKGROUND: Advance Care Planning via Group Visits (ACP-GV) is a patient-centered intervention facilitated by a clinician using a group modality to promote healthcare decision-making among veterans. Participants in the group document a "Next Step" to use in planning for their future care needs. The next step may include documentation of preferences in an advance directive, discussing plans with family, or anything else to fulfill their ACP needs. This evaluation seeks to determine whether there are identifiable subgroups of group participants with differing needs prior to delivery of the ACP-GV program and, if so, to use information about the subgroups to enhance the program offered to veterans in United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare settings. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of national data from a quality improvement evaluation. Patient- and provider-level data from administrative healthcare records for VA users in all 50 states, territories, and the District of Columbia provides data on veterans attending ACP-GV during federal fiscal years 2018-2022 (N = 26,857). Latent class analysis seeks to identify the various subgroups of veterans based on their level of ACP self-efficacy before attending ACP-GV and any demographic differences across the resulting subgroups of veterans attending ACP-GV. ACP self-efficacy is derived from seven items obtained from a participant worksheet used during the group. RESULTS: Analysis revealed two distinct groups of veterans, distinguishable by their pre-ACP-GV levels of one aspect of ACP self-efficacy: prior knowledge of ACP. Veterans with higher prior knowledge of ACP are associated with an identified next step focused on checking their current AD status and updating it, and veterans with lower ACP prior knowledge are associated with identifying a next step to discuss ACP more fully with family. Differences in age, sex, race, ethnicity, and marital status exist across subgroups of veterans. CONCLUSION: Greater attention must be paid to ACP and veterans' prior knowledge of ACP to consistently encourage annual review and status updates.

Breeding animals able to effectively respond to stress could be a long-term, sustainable, and affordable strategy to improve resilience and welfare in livestock systems. In the present study, the concentrations of 29 plasma biomarkers were used as candidate endophenotypes for metabolic stress response in single-SNP, gene- and haplotype-based GWAS using 739 healthy lactating Italian Holstein cows and 88,271 variants. Significant genetic associations were found in all the 3 GWAS approaches for plasma γ-glutamyl transferase concentration on BTA17, for paraoxonase on BTA4, and for alkaline phosphatase and zinc on BTA2. On these chromosomes, single-SNP and gene-based chromosome-wide association studies were performed, confirming GWAS findings. The signals identified for paraoxonase, γ-glutamyl transferase, and alkaline phosphatase were in proximity of the genes coding for them. The heritability of these 4 biomarkers ranged from moderate to high (from 0.39 to 0.54). Plasma biomarkers are known to undergo large changes in concentration during metabolic stress in the transition period, with an inter-individual variability in the rate of change and recovery time. Genetics may account in part for these differences. To assess this, we studied a subset of 139 periparturient cows homozygous at 3 SNPs known to be respectively associated with concentration of plasma ceruloplasmin, paraoxonase and γ-glutamyl transferase. We compared the immune-metabolic profile measured in plasma at -7, +5 and +30 d relative to calving between groups of opposite homozygotes. A significant effect of the genotype was found on paraoxonase and γ-glutamyl transferase plasma concentration at all the 3 time points. No evidence for genotype effect was detected for ceruloplasmin. Understanding the genetic control underlying metabolic stress response may suggest new approaches to foster resilience in dairy cows.

Sustained attention, a key cognitive skill that improves during childhood and adolescence, tends to be worse in some emotional and behavioural disorders. Sustained attention is typically studied in non-affective task contexts; here, we used a novel task to index performance in affective versus neutral contexts across adolescence (N = 465; ages 11-18). We asked whether: (i) performance would be worse in negative versus neutral task contexts; (ii) performance would improve with age; (iii) affective interference would be greater in younger adolescents; (iv) adolescents at risk for depression and higher in anxiety would show overall worse performance; and (v) would show differential performance in negative contexts. Results indicated that participants performed more poorly in negative contexts and showed age-related performance improvements. Those at risk of depression performed more poorly than those at lower risk. However, there was no difference between groups as a result of affective context. For anxiety there was no difference in performance as a function of severity. However, those with higher anxiety showed less variance in their reaction times to negative stimuli than those with lower anxiety. One interpretation is that moderate levels of emotional arousal associated with anxiety make individuals less susceptible to the distracting effects of negative stimuli.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Several U.S. organizations now recommend starting average-risk colorectal cancer screening at age 45 years, but the prevalence of colonic neoplasia in individuals younger than 50 years has not been well characterized. We used a national endoscopic registry to calculate age-stratified prevalence and predictors of colorectal neoplasia. METHODS: Outpatient screening colonoscopies performed during 2010-2020 in the GI Quality Improvement Consortium registry were analyzed. We measured the prevalence of advanced neoplasia and adenomas by age, sex, and race/ethnicity, as well as the prevalence ratio of neoplasia compared with the reference group of 50- to 54-year-olds. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of neoplasia. RESULTS: We identified 3,928,727 screening colonoscopies, of which 129,736 (3.3%) were performed on average-risk individuals younger than 50 years. The prevalence of advanced neoplasia was 6.2% for 50- to 54-year-olds and 5.0% (prevalence ratio, 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.78-0.83) for average-risk 45- to 49-year-olds. Men had higher prevalence of neoplasia than women for all age groups. White individuals had higher prevalence of advanced neoplasia than persons of other racial/ethnic groups in most age groups, which was partially driven by serrated lesions. On multivariable regression, White individuals had higher odds of advanced neoplasia than Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals in both younger and older age groups. CONCLUSIONS: In a large U.S. endoscopy registry, the prevalence of advanced neoplasia in 45- to 49-year-olds was substantial and supports beginning screening at age 45 years. White individuals had higher risk of advanced neoplasia than Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals across the age spectrum. These findings may inform adenoma detection benchmarks and risk-based screening strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Variability in adherence rates to the Seattle protocol and to surveillance interval recommendations, established quality indicators (QIs) in Barrett's esophagus (BE), is unknown. METHODS: We evaluated endoscopist and site-based adherence rates to these QIs from January 2018 to May 2021 using the GI Quality Improvement Consortium national registry with matched endoscopy and pathology data. RESULTS: Across 153 practices with 572 endoscopists performing 20,155 endoscopies, adherence to the Seattle protocol varied by endoscopists (median 93.8%, IQR 18.9%) and by site (median 90.0%, IQR 20.1%). Adherence to appropriate surveillance intervals for nondysplastic BE also varied by endoscopist (median 82.4%, IQR 36.3%) and site (median 77.2%, IQR 29.8%). The overall dysplasia detection rate was 3.1% and varied among endoscopists and sites. DISCUSSION: These US population-based results can serve as a benchmark for quality initiatives and intervention trials aimed at improving outcomes for patients with BE.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate patellofemoral cartilage health, as assessed by quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) T2 relaxation times, 24-months after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and determine if they were associated with patellofemoral contact forces and knee mechanics during gait 3 months after surgery. DESIGN: Thirty individuals completed motion analysis during overground walking at a self-selected speed 3 months after ACLR. An EMG-driven neuromusculoskeletal model was used to determine muscle forces, which were then used in a previously described model to estimate patellofemoral contact forces. Biomechanical variables of interest included peak patellofemoral contact force, peak knee flexion angle and moment, and walking speed. These same participants underwent a sagittal bilateral T2 mapping qMRI scan 24-months after surgery. T2 relaxation times were estimated for both patellar and trochlear cartilage. Paired t-tests were used to compare T2 relaxation times between limbs while Pearson correlations and linear regressions were utilized to assess the association between the biomechanical variables of interest and T2 relaxation times. RESULTS: Prolonged involved limb trochlear T2 relaxation times (vs uninvolved) were present 24-months after surgery, indicating worse cartilage health. No differences were detected in patellar cartilage. Significant negative associations were present within the involved limb for all the biomechanical variables of interest 3 months after ACLR and trochlear T2 relaxation times at 24-months. No associations were found in patellar cartilage or within the uninvolved limb. CONCLUSIONS: Altered involved limb trochlear cartilage health is present 24-months after ACLR and may be related to patellofemoral loading and other walking gait mechanics 3 months after surgery.

Insight into control of proton transfer, a crucial attribute of cellular functions, can be gained from investigations of bacterial reaction centers. While the uptake of protons associated with the reduction of the quinone is well characterized, the release of protons associated with the oxidized bacteriochlorophyll dimer has been poorly understood. Optical spectroscopy and proton release/uptake measurements were used to examine the proton release characteristics of twelve mutant reaction centers, each containing a change in an amino acid residue near the bacteriochlorophyll dimer. The mutant reaction centers had optical spectra similar to wild-type and were capable of transferring electrons to the quinones after light excitation of the bacteriochlorophyll dimer. They exhibited a large range in the extent of proton release and in the slow recovery of the optical signal for the oxidized dimer upon continuous illumination. Key roles were indicated for six amino acid residues, Thr L130, Asp L155, Ser L244, Arg M164, Ser M190, and His M193. Analysis of the results points to a hydrogen-bond network that contains these residues, with several additional residues and bound water molecules, forming a proton transfer pathway. In addition to proton transfer, the properties of the pathway are proposed to be responsible for the very slow charge recombination kinetics observed after continuous illumination. The characteristics of this pathway are compared to proton transfer pathways near the secondary quinone as well as those found in photosystem II and cytochrome c oxidase.

Hybrid complexes incorporating synthetic Mn-porphyrins into an artificial four-helix bundle domain of bacterial reaction centers created a system to investigate new electron transfer pathways. The reactions were initiated by illumination of the bacterial reaction centers, whose primary photochemistry involves electron transfer from the bacteriochlorophyll dimer through a series of electron acceptors to the quinone electron acceptors. Porphyrins with diphenyl, dimesityl, or fluorinated substituents were synthesized containing either Mn or Zn. Electrochemical measurements revealed potentials for Mn(III)/Mn(II) transitions that are ~ 0.4 V higher for the fluorinated Mn-porphyrins than the diphenyl and dimesityl Mn-porphyrins. The synthetic porphyrins were introduced into the proteins by binding to a four-helix bundle domain that was genetically fused to the reaction center. Light excitation of the bacteriochlorophyll dimer of the reaction center resulted in new derivative signals, in the 400 to 450 nm region of light-minus-dark spectra, that are consistent with oxidation of the fluorinated Mn(II) porphyrins and reduction of the diphenyl and dimesityl Mn(III) porphyrins. These features recovered in the dark and were not observed in the Zn(II) porphyrins. The amplitudes of the signals were dependent upon the oxidation/reduction midpoint potentials of the bacteriochlorophyll dimer. These results are interpreted as photo-induced charge-separation processes resulting in redox changes of the Mn-porphyrins, demonstrating the utility of the hybrid artificial reaction center system to establish design guidelines for novel electron transfer reactions.

The photophysical and chiroptical properties of a novel, chiral helicene-NHC-Re(I) complex bearing an N-(aza[6]helicenyl)-benzimidazolylidene ligand are described, showing its ability to emit yellow circularly polarized luminescence. A comparative analysis of this new system with other helicene-Re(I) complexes reported to date illustrates the impact of structural modifications on the emissive and absorptive properties.
RESUMEN
Screening for colon and rectal cancer has been associated with reduced incidence over the past few decades. However, shown a paradoxical increase in colon and rectal cancer in those younger than 50 years has also been recently shown. This information, along with the introduction of new screening modalities, has lead to updates in the current recommendations. We present some of the data supporting the use of current screening modalities, as well as summarize current guidelines.

Platinum(II) complexes of NNC-cyclometalating ligands based on 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine (HL1) have been widely investigated for their luminescence properties. We describe how PtL1Cl and five analogues with differently substituted aryl rings, PtL2-6Cl, can be oxidized with chlorine and/or iodobenzene dichloride to generate Pt(IV) compounds of the form Pt(NNC-Ln)Cl3 (n = 1-6). The molecular structures of several of them have been determined by X-ray diffraction. These PtLnCl3 compounds react with 2-arylpyridines to give a new class of Pt(IV) complex of the form [Pt(NNC)(NC)Cl]+. Elevated temperatures are required, and the reaction is accompanied by competitive reduction processes and generation of side-products; however, four examples of such complexes have been isolated and their molecular structures determined. Reaction of PtL1Cl3 with HL1 similarly generates [Pt(NNC-L1)2]2+, which we believe to be the first example of a bis-tridentate Pt(IV) complex. The lowest-energy bands in the UV-vis absorption spectra of all the PtLnCl3 compounds are displaced to higher energy relative to the Pt(II) precursors, but they red-shift with the electron richness of the aryl ring, consistent with predominantly 1[πAr â π*NN] character to the pertinent excited state. A similar trend is observed for the [Pt(NNC)(NC)Cl]+ complexes. They display phosphorescence in solution at room temperature, centered around 500 nm for [PtL1(ppy)Cl]+ and [Pt(L1)2]2+, and 550 nm for methoxy-substituted derivatives. The lifetimes are in the microsecond range, rising to hundreds of microseconds at 77 K, consistent with triplet excited states of primarily 3[πAr â π*NN] character with relatively little participation of the metal.

A series of seven new platinum(II) complexes PtLnCl have been prepared, where Ln is an NCN-coordinating ligand comprising a benzene ring 1,3-disubstituted with two different azaheterocycles. In PtL1-5Cl, one heterocycle is a simple pyridine ring, while the other is an isoquinoline, a quinoline, a pyrimidine (L1, L2, L3), or a p-CF3- or p-OMe-substituted pyridine (L4 and L5). PtL6Cl incorporates both a p-CF3 and a p-OMe-substituted pyridine. The synthesis of the requisite proligands HLn is achieved using Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling methodology. The molecular structures of six of the Pt(II) complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction. All the complexes are brightly luminescent in deoxygenated solution at room temperature. The absorption and emission properties are compared with those of the corresponding symmetrical complexes featuring two identical heterocycles, PtLnsymCl, and of the parent Pt(dpyb)Cl containing two unsubstituted pyridines [dpybH = 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene]. While the absorption spectra of the nonsymmetrical complexes show features of both PtLnsymCl and Pt(dpyb)Cl, the emission generally resembles that of whichever of the corresponding symmetrical complexes has the lower-energy emission. PtL1Cl differs in thatâat room temperature but not at 77 Kâit displays emission bands that can be attributed to excited states involving both the pyridine and the isoquinoline rings, despite the latter being unequivocally lower in energy. This unusual behavior is attributed to thermally activated repopulation of the former excited state from the latter, facilitated by the very long-lived nature of the isoquinoline-based excited state. At elevated concentrations, all the complexes show an additional red-shifted emission band attributable to excimers. For PtL1Cl, the excimer strikingly dominates the emission spectra at all but the lowest concentrations (<10-5 M). Trends in the energies of the excimers and their propensity to form are compared with those of the symmetrical analogues.

We present the relaxation dynamics of deuterated water molecules via autoionization, initiated by the absorption of a 61 eV photon, producing the very rare D+ + O+ + D breakup channel. We employ the COLd target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy method to measure the 3D momenta of the ionic fragments and emitted electrons from the dissociating molecule in coincidence. We interpret the results using the potential energy surfaces extracted from multi-reference configuration interaction calculations. The measured particle energy distributions can be related to a super-excited monocationic state located above the double ionization threshold of D2O. The autoionized electron energy shows a sharp distribution centered around 0.5 eV, which is a signature of the atomic oxygen autoionization occurring in the direct and sequential dissociation processes of D2O+* at a large internuclear distance. In this way, an O+ radical fragment and a low-energy electron are created, both of which can trigger secondary reactions in their environment.
