RESUMEN

In contrast to the uncertainty about the prevalence and importance of late-life depressive disorders, a consistent pattern of risk factors for depressive symptoms has been shown by studies using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The authors surveyed a representative sample of 2,137 elderly community residents with the CES-D and found a hierarchy of characteristics associated with substantial levels of depressive symptoms: illness, disability, isolation, bereavement, and poverty. If these findings are confirmed by prospective studies, addressing modifiable factors in the emergence, persistence, and remission of depressive symptoms might extend the independent survival of older adults.

RESUMEN

Clinical criteria for psychiatric illnesses that are career limiting to active duty Air Force personnel are defined in Air Force Instruction (AFI) 48-123. The terms used in the AFI are not sufficiently specific to the standards of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). The authors review AFI 48-123 for conditions commonly seen in Air Force mental health practice and offer clinical interpretation of this AFI to bring it into line with DSM-IV. As a result of this synthesis, decisions regarding which mental health conditions warrant medical evaluation board disposition are clearer and more uniform. Clinicians and administrators are encouraged to refer to this paper for assistance in making decisions on mental health patients.

RESUMEN

Polycrystalline ZnS produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to gain insight into the growth mechanism. Epitaxial growth of ZnS (111) layers is indicated in cubic CVD-ZnS. Mechanisms counteracting the growth of large, homogeneously oriented grains are proposed. This includes the summation of faults at low-angle grain boundaries during the deposition of new layers as well as the formation of new growth directions perpendicular to the sides of large grains. Wurtzite could be identified as a product of instable deposition conditions at the beginning and end of the deposition process.
