RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The role of miR-145-5p in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been studied, however, the regulation of hBMSCs-derived exosomes (Exo) transmitted miR-145-5p in NSCLC was still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of hBMSCs-derived exosomes (Exo) in the progression of NSCLC. METHODS: The Exo was extracted from hBMSCs and added to A549 and H1299 cell culture, followed by the detection of cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. The correlation between the expression of miR-145-5p and SOX9, as well as their binding relationship was determined by correlation analysis, luciferase gene reporter assay and RNA pull-down assays. The in vivo animal model was established to further verify the impact of hBMSCs-Exo. RESULTS: It showed that miR-145-5p was downregulated and SOX9 was upregulated in NSCLC tissues. HBMSCs-derived Exo, and hBMSCs-Exo with overexpression of miR-145-5p could inhibit cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of both A549 and H1299 cells, and prevent against tumor progression in vivo. MiR-145-5p and SOX9 were found to be able to bind to each other, and a negative correlation were observed between the expression of them in NSCLC tissues. Furthermore, inhibition of SOX9 could reversed the suppressed role of miR-145-5p in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSION: Therefore, HBMSCs-Exo effectively transmitted miR-145-5p, leading to the suppression of malignant development in NSCLC through the regulation of SOX9.

RESUMEN

Copper-catalyzed selective alkynylation with N-propargyl carboxamides as nucleophiles has been successfully developed for the synthesis of C2-functionalized chromanones. Under optimized reaction conditions, 21 examples were obtained in one-pot procedure through 1,4-conjugate addition. This protocol features readily available feedstocks, easy operations, and moderate to good yields, which provides viable access to pharmacologically active C2-functionalized chromanones.

INTRODUCTION: Over the decades the trends of early onset of puberty have been observed in children, particularly in girls. Research evidence has reported diet to be among the most important risk factors for puberty onset. This study evaluated the association between dietary behavior and puberty in girls. METHODS: We enrolled 201 girls with the main complaints of breast development as the cases at the Endocrine Department of Nanjing Children's Hospital. The cases were divided into breast development with central priming and breast development without central priming groups and were matched with 223 normal health girls with no breast development (control group). We used the modified Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) to conduct a face-to-face interview about dietary behavior. Sample t-test or Mann Whitney U test or Chi-square test, the analysis of variance or Kruskal Wallis test, and least significant difference (LSD) were used to compare differences between the groups, Bonferroni was used to correct the p-value, and logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors for puberty onset. RESULTS: A total of 424 girls participated in this study, among them, 136 were cases with breast development with central priming, 65 were cases with breast development without central priming, and 223 were normal health girls with no breast development. Age of the participants ranged from 4.5 to 9.3 years. There were significant differences in food response (p < 0.001), dietary restriction (p < 0.001), frequencies of vegetable intake (χ2 = 8.856, p = 0.012), drinking milk (χ2 = 23.099, p = 0.001), and borderline statistical difference in a total score of unhealthy dietary behavior (p = 0.053) among the cases and controls. However, in the post hoc analysis, these dietary behaviors were significant differences between the girls with breast development with central priming and the control groups. Moreover, girls in the breast development with central priming group had significantly higher bone age (BA), uterine body length, ovarian volume, basal luteinizing hormone (LH), basal follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), peak LH, peak FSH, estradiol (E2), and free triiodothyronine (FT3) compared to those in the breast development without central priming group. In the multivariate logistic regression, only uterine body length was associated with increased risk of breast development with central priming (OR = 1.516, 95%CI: 1.243-1.850). CONCLUSION: There were significant differences in dietary behaviors among girls with breast development with central priming and normal health girls with no breast development, and uterine body length was associated with an increasing risk of breast development with central priming among girls with breast development.

RESUMEN

Four new tirucallane-type triterpenoids, polystanins H-K (1-4), were obtained from the stems and leaves of Aphanamixis polystachya. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of the spectroscopic data and comparison with literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 showed week inhibitory effects against NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. All the isolates were investigated for their antifungal activities against drug-resistant Candida albicans.

AIMS: This study aimed to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in improving self-efficacy, reducing stress and anxiety among peritoneal dialysis patients, and (ii) compare the most effective method of mindfulness based interventions. METHODS: This randomized three-arm controlled trial recruited first-time peritoneal dialysis patients from the peritoneal dialysis outpatient clinic in Singapore. Patients were randomly allocated to either video-assisted mindfulness training, therapist-assisted mindfulness training or treatment-as-usual. All groups received 4.5 days of structured peritoneal dialysis training at the peritoneal dialysis centre, while video-assisted mindfulness training and therapist-assisted mindfulness training groups were taught additional mindfulness-based techniques. The perceived stress scale, self-efficacy, and anxiety (State and Trait Anxiety Inventory) were measured at baseline, 4- and 12 weeks post-randomization, using reliable and valid instruments. RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients were recruited (13 in each group). All the therapies showed a significant time trend in anxiety. Only therapist- and video-assisted mindfulness training showed a significant trend in perceived stress scale scores but not treatment-as-usual. All Intervention X Time interactions were not significant. Patients in therapist- and video-assisted mindfulness training groups had reduced perceived stress scale scores compared to treatment-as-usual at week 12. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the potential of mindfulness-based interventions in reducing stress among first-time PD patients.

PURPOSE: This study seeks to build a normative database for the vessel density of the superficial retina (SVD) and evaluate how changes and trends in the retinal microvasculature may be influenced by age and axial length (AL) in non-glaucomatous eyes, as measured with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: We included 500 eyes of 290 healthy subjects visiting a county hospital. Each participant underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examinations and OCTA to measure the SVD and thickness of the macular and peripapillary areas. To analyze correlations between SVD and age or AL, multivariable linear regression models with generalized estimating equations were applied. RESULTS: Age was negatively correlated with the SVD of the superior, central, and inferior macular areas and the superior peripapillary area, with a decrease rate of 1.06%, 1.36%, 0.84%, and 0.66% per decade, respectively. However, inferior peripapillary SVD showed no significant correlation with age. AL was negatively correlated with the SVD of the inferior macular area and the superior and inferior peripapillary areas, with coefficients of -0.522%/mm, -0.733%/mm, and -0.664%/mm, respectively. AL was also negatively correlated with the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer and inferior ganglion cell complex (p = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Age and AL were the two main factors affecting changes in SVD. Furthermore, AL, a relative term to represent the degree of myopia, had a greater effect than age and showed a more significant effect on thickness than on SVD. This relationship has important implications because myopia is a significant issue in modern cities.

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation is a form of epigenetic modification that impacts gene expression without modifying the DNA sequence, thereby exerting control over gene function and cellular development. The prediction of DNA methylation is vital for understanding and exploring gene regulatory mechanisms. Currently, machine learning algorithms are primarily used for model construction. However, several challenges remain to be addressed, including limited prediction accuracy, constrained generalization capability, and insufficient learning capacity. RESULTS: In response to the aforementioned challenges, this paper leverages the similarities between DNA sequences and time series to introduce a time series-based hybrid ensemble learning model, called Multi2-Con-CAPSO-LSTM. The model utilizes multivariate and multidimensional encoding approach, combining three types of time series encodings with three kinds of genetic feature encodings, resulting in a total of nine types of feature encoding matrices. Convolutional Neural Networks are utilized to extract features from DNA sequences, including temporal, positional, physicochemical, and genetic information, thereby creating a comprehensive feature matrix. The Long Short-Term Memory model is then optimized using the Chaotic Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm for predicting DNA methylation. CONCLUSIONS: Through cross-validation experiments conducted on 17 species involving three types of DNA methylation (6 mA, 5hmC, and 4mC), the results demonstrate the robust predictive capabilities of the Multi2-Con-CAPSO-LSTM model in DNA methylation prediction across various types and species. Compared with other benchmark models, the Multi2-Con-CAPSO-LSTM model demonstrates significant advantages in sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and correlation. The model proposed in this paper provides valuable insights and inspiration across various disciplines, including sequence alignment, genetic evolution, time series analysis, and structure-activity relationships.

BACKGROUND: Cyclophosphamide (CTX) and calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) based regimens are recommended as immunosuppressive therapies for patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). Focal and segmental glomerular sclerosis (FSGS) lesions, which are common in membranous nephropathy (MN), are poor predictors of outcome. This study compared the differences of prognosis between two regimens in patients with IMN combined with FSGS lesions. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 108 patients with biopsy-proven IMN, accompanied with FSGS lesions, nephrotic syndrome and an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 who were treated with CTX or CNIs. We used propensity score matching (PSM) for balancing the confounding variables. RESULTS: During follow-up, 10 patients (10/55 [18.2%]; nine males) in the CNIs group showed a 50% decline in eGFR; eight had a not otherwise specified variant. Patients initially treated with CNIs had a significantly higher risk of progression to the primary outcome and a lower probability of complete or total remission. The relapse rate was higher in patients who initially received CNIs- than in those who received CTX-based treatment. Before PSM, age and 24-h urine protein level differed significantly between the groups. The PSM model included data from 72 patients. Worse outcomes were also noted among patients who initially received CNIs than those who received CTX-based treatments after matching. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with MN combined with FSGS lesions have a higher risk of renal functional decline and a higher rate of relapse after CNIs than after CTX therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the physical growth and dietary characteristics of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and to analyze their relationship with core symptoms of ADHD. METHODS: A total of 268 children who were newly diagnosed with ADHD in Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from June to December 2020 were included in the ADHD group, and 102 healthy children who underwent physical examination during the same period were selected as the control group. Physical evaluations and dietary surveys were conducted for both groups. ADHD diagnosis and scoring were performed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edition). Factor analysis, Spearman correlation analysis, and mediation analysis were used to study the relationship between core symptoms of ADHD, dietary patterns, and physical growth. RESULTS: The rate of overweight/obesity in the ADHD group was significantly higher than that in the control group (35.8% vs 21.6%, P<0.05). Three dietary patterns were extracted from the food frequency questionnaire: vegetarian dietary pattern, traditional dietary pattern, and snack/fast food pattern. The factor score for the snack/fast food pattern in the ADHD group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between ADHD symptom scores, snack/fast food pattern factor scores, and body fat percentage (P<0.05). The mediation analysis showed that the snack/fast food pattern played a partial mediating role in the relationship between ADHD symptom scores and body fat percentage, with a mediation proportion of 26.66%. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of overweight/obesity in children with ADHD is higher than that in non-ADHD children. Core symptoms of ADHD are related to dietary patterns and physical growth, with the snack/fast food pattern playing a partial mediating role in the relationship between core symptoms of ADHD and physical growth.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of baseline peripheral blood neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes on locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients. METHODS: Clinicopathologic data of 317 LARC patients during July 2010 and October 2016 were retrospectively gathered. X-tile software was used to acquire the optimal cutoff values of neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes. Peripheral blood immune score (PBIS) system was proposed and built based on neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes. The Cox model was used to analyze the associations between clinicopathological characteristics and potential outcomes. C-index was used to assess model performance. A nomogram was constructed to predict prognosis, and a calibration plot was used to verify the accuracy of the nomogram prediction model. RESULTS: Cutoff values of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes were 4.46 (× 109/L), 1.66 (× 109/L), and 0.39 (× 109/L), respectively. PBIS was related to sex (P < 0.001), tumor length (P = 0.003), and tumor thickness (P = 0.014). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that PBIS (HR = 0.707, 95% CI: 0.549-0.912, P = 0.008) was an independent predictor of DFS. High PBIS (HR = 0.697, 95% CI: 0.492-0.988, P = 0.043) and high lymphocyte count (HR = 0.511, 95%CI: 0.273-0.958, P = 0.036) were favorable factors of OS. Both C-index (0.74, 95% CI: 0.549-0.912) and the calibration plot showed good prediction ability of the nomogram for DFS. CONCLUSION: PBIS, composed of baseline peripheral blood neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes, is an independent predictor of the prognosis of LARC. Combination of PBIS and ypTNM stage may be a promising marker to guide adjuvant therapy after the operation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the performance of Sonazoid-based contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the microwave ablation (MWA) of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). METHODS: Forty patients with pHPT were enrolled and treated with percutaneous ultrasound (US)-guided MWA assisted by CEUS. All patients underwent immediate CEUS examinations following MWA. On post-ablation day 1, patients who did not display a decrease in intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels to the norm were examined by CEUS to evaluate an incomplete ablation. We compared the serum iPTH and calcium levels and the nodule volumes before and after MWA. The complications were evaluated during and after treatment. RESULTS: Immediately following MWA, CEUS demonstrated complete ablation with all 44 parathyroid nodules. On post-ablation day 1, five nodules in five patients displayed annular enhancement around the ablation zone on CEUS. The average maximum diameters of the nodules and the ablation zone were 1.09 ± 0.28 cm and 1.36 ± 0.23 cm, respectively. An ablation zone larger than the primary lesion (p < 0.05) generated a higher rate of complete ablation. Compared with pre-MWA, serum iPTH and calcium levels were significantly improved. Treatment success was achieved in 38 patients (95%). Hoarseness was a major complication in six patients (15%); however, it improved spontaneously within 1-4 months. We observed two recurrences (2/40, 5%) at 9 months and 11 months following MWA, respectively. CONCLUSION: US-guided percutaneous MWA assisted by CEUS for pHPT is an effective and safe therapy. CEUS can avoid operative failure and improve the cure rate.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is one of the major causes of blindness; it is estimated that over 110 million people will be affected by glaucoma worldwide by 2040. Research on glaucoma detection using deep learning technology has been increasing, but the diagnosis of glaucoma in a large population with high incidence of myopia remains a challenge. This study aimed to provide a decision support system for the automatic detection of glaucoma using fundus images, which can be applied for general screening, especially in areas of high incidence of myopia. METHODS: A total of 1,155 fundus images were acquired from 667 individuals with a mean axial length of 25.60 ± 2.0 mm at the National Taiwan University Hospital, Hsinchu Br. These images were graded based on the findings of complete ophthalmology examinations, visual field test, and optical coherence tomography into three groups: normal (N, n = 596), pre-perimetric glaucoma (PPG, n = 66), and glaucoma (G, n = 493), and divided into a training-validation (N: 476, PPG: 55, G: 373) and test (N: 120, PPG: 11, G: 120) sets. A multimodal model with the Xception model as image feature extraction and machine learning algorithms [random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), dense neural network (DNN), and others] was applied. RESULTS: The Xception model classified the N, PPG, and G groups with 93.9% of the micro-average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) with tenfold cross-validation. Although normal and glaucoma sensitivity can reach 93.51% and 86.13% respectively, the PPG sensitivity was only 30.27%. The AUROC increased to 96.4% in the N + PPG and G groups. The multimodal model with the N + PPG and G groups showed that the AUROCs of RF, SVM, and DNN were 99.56%, 99.59%, and 99.10%, respectively; The N and PPG + G groups had less than 1% difference. The test set showed an overall 3%-5% less AUROC than the validation results. CONCLUSION: The multimodal model had good AUROC while detecting glaucoma in a population with high incidence of myopia. The model shows the potential for general automatic screening and telemedicine, especially in Asia. OBJECTIVE: Effect of physical exercise on pregnant women currently has become a hot topic in prenatal health care. In this study, A meta-analysis was conducted on account of Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). It focused on evaluating the effect of physical exercise intervention on blood pressure so that could provide certain evidence for health care during pregnancy. METHODS: Results of relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library, and all of these included studies were evaluated according to the Cochrane collaboration's tool for assessing the risk of bias. Stata 15.1 was used for meta-analysis, and mean difference (MD) was used as statistic for pooled analysis. The effect values were combined by conventional meta-analysis and Bayesian meta-analysis respectively, and the consistency of pooled results was considered as well. RESULTS: A total of 18 RCT studies were included in the quantitative analysis. The conventional meta-analysis showed differences in blood pressure between intervention group and control group (P < 0.05). Systolic and diastolic blood pressures of intervention group were 3.19 mmHg (95% CI: -5.13, -1.25) and 2.14 mmHg (95% CI: -4.26, -0.03) lower than that of control group, respectively. Bayesian meta-analysis showed that both systolic and diastolic pressure among intervention group decreased by 3.34 mmHg (95% CrI: -5.15, -1.56) and 2.14 mmHg (95% CrI: -3.79, - 0.50), respectively. Subgroup analysis supported that as long as healthy pregnant women participated in exercises, their blood pressure could be slightly regulated, while hypertension susceptible pregnant women significantly lowered blood pressure. CONCLUSION: Exercise intervention during pregnancy is beneficial to lower or normalize blood pressure, and this research provides clues for follow-up studies.

BACKGROUND: Precision treatment of pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) has been the focus of research for decades. Whether the timing of the initiation of dietary intake contributes to DKA correction is ignored. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study to investigate the effects of the timing of the initiation of dietary intake on DKA correction in Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, a tertiary children's hospital, from June 2017 to December 2020. Individual basic characteristic and clinical information of all DKA cases (n = 183) were collected. Multiple linear regression, logistic regression model and random forest (RF) model were used to assess the effect of the timing of the initiation of dietary intake on DKA correction. RESULTS: The mean age of the children diagnosed with DKA was 6.95 (SD 3.82) years. The median DKA correction time and the timing of the initiation of dietary intake was 41.72 h and 3.13 h, respectively. There were 62.3% (n = 114) patients corrected DKA at the end of the 48-h rehydration therapy. For each hour delay in starting dietary intake, child's DKA correction was prolonged by 0.5 (95% CI 1.05, 1.11, P < 0.001) hours and the adjusted odds of DKA over 48 h was increased by 8% (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.11, P < 0.001) after adjustment for potential confounders. The RF model based on the timing of the initiation of dietary intake and child's weight and systolic pressure achieved the highest AUC of 0.789. CONCLUSION: Pediatricians should pay attention to the effect of the timing of the initiation of dietary intake, a controllable factor, on DKA correction.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence has indicated that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play a role in various diseases. However, the influence of circRNAs in nephritis remains unknown. METHODS: Microarray analysis and RT-qPCR were used to detect the expression of circRNA. Type I IFN were administrated to RMC and HEK293 cells to establish a nephritis cell model. CCK-8, MTT assay, and flow cytometry were used to assess cell proliferation, viability, and apoptosis of cells. Bioinformatics analysis and dual luciferase reporter assay detect the interaction of circ_0007059, miRNA-1278, and SHP-1. Glomerulonephritis was performed in a mouse model by administration of IFNα-expressing adenovirus. IHC staining showed the pathogenic changes. RESULTS: In the present study, the expression of circ_0007059 in type I interferon (IFN)-treated renal mesangial cells (RMCs), lupus nephritis (LN) specimens, and HEK293 cells was downregulated compared with that in normal healthy samples and untreated cells. Circ_0007059 overexpression resulted in increased cell proliferation, cell viability, apoptosis, and inflammation-associated factors (CXCL10, IFIT1, ISG15, and MX1) in RMCs and HEK293 cells. In addition, circ_0007059 overexpression significantly restored cell proliferation and viability and inhibited IFN-induced apoptosis. Further, the increased expression resulted in reduced inflammation and the downregulation of CXCL10, IFIT1, ISG15, and MX1 in RMCs and HEK293 cells. Circ_0007059 serves as a sponge for miR-1278 so that the latter can target the 3'-untranslated region of SHP-1. Overexpressed circ_0007059 inhibited miR-1278 expression and elevated SHP-1 expression, subsequently reducing STAT3 phosphorylation. Meanwhile, miR-1278 was upregulated and SHP-1 was downregulated in LN samples and IFN-treated cells. The restoration of miR-1278 counteracted the effect of circ_0007059 on viability, apoptosis, and inflammation as well as on SHP-1/STAT3 signaling in RMCs and HEK293 cells. We also investigated the role of SHP-1 overexpression in IFN-treated RMCs and HEK293 cells; SHP-1 overexpression resulted in a similar phenotype as that observed with circ_0007059 expression. CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that circ_0007059 protects RMCs against apoptosis and inflammation during nephritis by attenuating miR-1278/SHP-1/STAT3 signaling.

BACKGROUND: Due to the rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide, it is necessary to ascertain essential immune inflammatory parameters that describe the severity of the disease and provide guidance for treatment. We performed network meta-analyses to determine differences in blood cells, lymphocyte subsets, and cytokines in COVID-19 patients with different clinical stages. METHODS: Databases were systematically searched to May 2, 2020, and updated on June 1, 2020. Network meta-analyses were conducted via Stata 15.0, and the mean difference (MD) and its 95% CI were used as the effect values of the pooled analysis. RESULTS: Seventy-one studies were included involving 8647 COVID-19 patients, White blood cell (WBC), neutrophil (NEUT), IL-6, and IL-10 counts increased significantly with worsening of the COVID-19, while lymphocyte (LYM) counts decreased. The levels of platelet (PLT), CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, and CD19+ cells in severe and critical patients were significantly lower than those in mild patients. IL-1ß count was significantly elevated in critical patients. CONCLUSIONS: Immune suppression and inflammatory injury play crucial roles in the progression of COVID-19, and the identification of susceptible cells and cytokines provide guidance for the early and accurate treatment of COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between mercury (Hg) exposure and thyroid hormones (THs) levels in the general population has been inconclusive. We conducted a random effects model meta-analysis to identify the association between Hg exposure and THs levels in the general population. METHODS: This meta-analysis were performed based on the PECO questions (P = general population; E =1ug/L Hg in blood and urine; C =1ug/L incremental increase on; and O = variation of THs levels). We searched four electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library for studies published on or before 20th July 2020. Prospective and cross-sectional studies that evaluated the association between Hg exposure and the levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxine (FT4) were included. We also assessed aggregate risks for the reliability of the included studies. RESULTS: Initially, we retrieved 4889 articles. 18 studies met our inclusion criteria after screening and 13 articles were eligible to be included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis results suggest that blood Hg may be significantly associated with THs levels. The presence of Hg in blood may significantly increase the levels of TSH (ß=0.55; 95%CI: 0.20,0.90; p < 0.001) and FT4 (ß=0.47; 95%CI: 0.11,0.82; p < 0.001), with the opposite association in T4 (ß=-0.02; 95%CI: 0.02, -0.01; p < 0.001). For the subgroup analysis, blood Hg was positively correlated with TSH levels in children and adolescents (ß=0.62; 95%CI: 0.09, 1.15; p < 0.001) and FT4 levels in pregnant women (ß=1.00; 95%CI: 0.99, 1.00; p < 0.001) respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis indicates that exposure to Hg in blood could significantly corrrelate with the levels of TSH, T4, and FT4 in the general population. Therefore, it is crucial to control the use of Hg and strengthen protection of the thyroid.

Depression is increasingly recognized as an inflammatory disease, with inflammatory crosstalk in the brain contributing its pathogenesis. Life stresses may up-regulate inflammatory processes and promote depression. Although cytokines are central to stress-related immune responses, their contribution to stress-induced depression remains unclear. Here, we used unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) to induce depression-like behaviors in mice, as assessed through a suite of behavioral tests. C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 1 (CXCL1)-related molecular networks responsible for depression-like behaviors were assessed through intrahippocampal microinjection of lenti-CXCL1, the antidepressant fluoxetine, the C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2) inhibitor SB265610, and the glycogen synthase kinase-3ß (GSK3ß) inhibitor AR-A014418. Modulation of apoptosis-related pathways and neuronal plasticity were assessed via quantification of cleaved caspase-3, B-cell lymphoma 2-associated X protein, cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein expression. CXCL1/CXCL2 expression was correlated with depression-like behaviors in response to chronic stress or antidepressant treatment in the UCMS depression model. Intrahippocampal microinjection of lenti-CXCL1 increased depression-like behaviors, activated GSK3ß, increased apoptosis pathways, suppressed CREB activation, and decreased BDNF. Administration of the selective GSK3ß inhibitor AR-A014418 abolished the effects of lenti-CXCL1, and the CXCR2 inhibitor SB265610 prevented chronic stress-induced depression-like behaviors, inhibited GSK3ß activity, blocked apoptosis pathways, and restored BDNF expression. OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between phenolic chemicals and the risk of earlier puberty based on the available evidence by systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched and retrieved appropriate journal articles on the association between phenols exposure and earlier puberty in children published before February 14, 2020. Stata software version 12.0 and Excel were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis with total subjects of 4737. All the subjects included in our studies were girls. The pooled estimate has shown the association between 2, 5- dichrolophenol exposure, and earlier puberty in children with effect size (ES) 1.13 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.20). Exposed to other types of phenolic chemicals such as bisphenol A, Triclosan, Benzophenone-3 were not statistically significant associated with the risk of earlier puberty in children with the overall pooled estimates of ES of 1.09 (95%CI: 0.88, 1.35), ES 1.05(95% CI: 0.96, 1.15), and ES 0.98 (95% CI: 0.88, 1.10) respectively. CONCLUSION: Our results portray that phenols particularly 2, 5- dichlorophenol exposure might be associated with the risk of earlier puberty in children. Also, caution should be taken to other type of phenolic chemicals since in subgroup analysis some individual studies have shown a positive relationship between bisphenol A, Triclosan and Benzophenone-3 exposures, and the risk of earlier puberty in children. Future cohort studies should be conducted with more sample sizes to determine the relationship between 2, 5- dichlorophenol, and the risk of earlier puberty in children of all gender.

Salt tolerance and the possible functions of suberization on salt exclusion and secretion were examined in a dominant mangrove plant, Avicennia marina. The results showed that low salinities (10‰ and 20‰) almost has no negative effect on A. marina, however significant growth inhibitions were observed in the seedlings grown in higher salinities (30‰ and 40‰). With the increases of salinity, increased tissue Na+ content and enhanced salt secretion by glands were observed. Obvious suberization thickening were detected both in the exodermis and endodermis of the roots after salt pretreatment when compared to the roots without salt treatment. More importantly, the present data further confirmed that these root apoplastic barriers would directly decrease Na+ loading into xylem. Higher salt tolerance was observed in the seedlings pre-cultivated by salty tide when compared to fresh water cultivated A. marina. In summary, this study suggests a barrier property of suberization in dealing with salt exclusion in mangroves, a moderate salt pre-treatment may benefit plant withstanding high salinity.
