BACKGROUND: Lymphoma, encompassing common non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and less common Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), represents significant hematological malignancies. Advancements in treatment modalities have reshaped survival rates, particularly in NHL. This complexity results in varying outcomes, some requiring extended observation periods and multiple chemotherapy treatments. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to explore and compare the overall survival (OS) of HL and NHL at 1, 3, and 5-year follow-ups among adult lymphoma patients in Qatar during January 2013 - December 2017. Further objectives encompass comparing the most prevalent histological types, clinical and epidemiological traits of HL and NHL, as well as secondary aims of assessing clinical features, treatment, response, disease-free survival, and overall survival. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive study of consecutive cases was conducted at Qatar's NCCCR between 2013 and 2017. Inclusion criteria involved patients ≥18 years old, of any gender and clinical stage at diagnosis, who received chemotherapy and had known outcomes. Descriptive statistics were applied, and survival analysis utilized Kaplan-Meier curves. STATA version 13.0 facilitated data analysis. RESULTS: Between 2013-2017, 414 individuals in Qatar were diagnosed with lymphoma. The median age at diagnosis was 49 years (IQR 36-95 years; p<0.001) across all patients. Males exhibited a higher likelihood of developing HL and NHL, comprising 74% and 70% of cases respectively, though this difference was statistically insignificant (p=0.45). Among NHL-B subtypes, mature B-cell neoplasms (60%) predominated, while Lymphocyte-rich subtype (49%) was prominent in HL cases. With a median follow-up of 17.3 months, OS rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 99%, 82%, and 64% respectively for all lymphoma patients. Subtype stratification revealed trends in 3-year follow-up OS (94% versus 82%) for HL and NHL, with 5-year OS of 67% and 60% respectively. HL demonstrated higher OS throughout the study period compared to NHL (p<0.001), though median OS remained unreached. CONCLUSIONS: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma emerged as the most prevalent subtype among lymphomas in Qatar. Generally, HL exhibited superior survival rates, at 67% compared to 60% for NHL. Minor deflation in survival rates, particularly for HL, might be attributed to Qatar's immigration patterns.

This study assessed the efficacy of granular cylindrical periodic discontinuous batch reactors (GC-PDBRs) for produced water (PW) treatment by employing eggshell and waste activated sludge (WAS) derived Nickel (Ni) augmented biochar. The synthesized biochar was magnetized to further enhance its contribution towards achieving carbon neutrality due to carbon negative nature, Carbon dioxide (CO2) sorption, and negative priming effects. The GC-PDBR1 and GC-PDBR2 process variables were optimized by the application of central composite design (CCD). This is to maximize the decarbonization rate. Results showed that the systems could reduce total phosphorus (TP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 76-80% and 92-99%, respectively. Optimal organic matter and nutrient removals were achieved at 80% volumetric exchange ratio (VER), 5 min settling time and 3000 mg/L mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration with desirability values of 0.811 and 0.954 for GC-PDBR1 and GC-PDBR2, respectively. Employing four distinct models, the biokinetic coefficients of the GC-PDBRs treating PW were calculated. The findings indicated that First order (0.0758-0.5365) and Monod models (0.8652-0.9925) have relatively low R2 values. However, the Grau Second-order model and Modified Stover-Kincannon model have high R2 values. This shows that, the Grau Second Order and Modified Stover-Kincannon models under various VER, settling time, and MLSS circumstances, are more suited to explain the removal of pollutants in the GC-PDBRs. Microbiological evaluation demonstrated that a high VER caused notable rises in the quantity of several microorganisms. Under high biological selective pressure, GC-PDBR2 demonstrated a greater percentage of nitrogen removal via autotrophic denitrification and a greater number of nitrifying bacteria. The overgrowth of bacteria such as Actinobacteriota spp. Bacteroidota spp, Gammaproteobacteria, Desulfuromonas Mesotoga in the phylum, class, and genus, has positively impacted on granule formation and stability. Taken together, our study through the introduction of intermittent aeration GC-PDBR systems with added magnetized waste derived biochar, is an innovative approach for simultaneous aerobic sludge granulation and PW treatment, thereby providing valuable contributions in the journey toward achieving decarbonization, carbon neutrality and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Understanding the major factors influencing groundwater chemistry and its evolution in irrigation areas is crucial for efficient irrigation management. Major ions and isotopes (δD-H2O together with δ18O-H2O) were used to identify the natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to groundwater salinization in the shallow aquifer of the Wadi Guenniche Plain (WGP) in the Mediterranean region of Tunisia. A comprehensive geochemical investigation of groundwater was conducted during both the low irrigation season (L-IR) and the high irrigation season (H-IR). The results show that the variation range and average concentrations of almost all the ions in both the L-IR and H-IR seasons are high. The groundwater in both seasons is characterized by high electrical conductivity and CaMgCl/SO4 and NaCl types. The dissolution of halite and gypsum, the precipitation of calcite and dolomite, and Na-Ca exchange are the main chemical reactions in the geochemical evolution of groundwater in the Wadi Guenniche Shallow Aquifer (WGSA). Stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen (δ18O-H2O and δD-H2O) indicate that groundwater in WGSA originated from local precipitation. In the H-IR season, the δ18O-H2O and δD-H2O values indicate that the groundwater experienced noticeable evaporation. The enriched isotopic signatures reveal that the WGSA's groundwater was influenced by irrigation return flow and seawater intrusion. The proportions of mixing with seawater were found to vary between 0.12% and 5.95%, and between 0.13% and 8.42% during the L-IR and H-IR seasons, respectively. Irrigation return flow and the associated evaporation increase the dissolved solids content in groundwater during the irrigation season. The long-term human activities (fertilization, irrigation, and septic waste infiltration) are the main drives of the high nitrate-N concentrations in groundwater. In coastal irrigation areas suffering from water scarcity, these results can help planners and policy makers understand the complexities of groundwater salinization to enable more sustainable management and development.

In a global context, trace element pollution assessment in complex multi-aquifer groundwater systems is important, considering the growing concerns about water resource quality and sustainability worldwide. This research addresses multiple objectives by integrating spatial, chemometric, and indexical study approaches, for assessing trace element pollution in the multi-aquifer groundwater system of the Al-Hassa Oasis, Saudi Arabia. Groundwater sampling and analysis followed standard methods. For this purpose, the research employed internationally recognized protocols for groundwater sampling and analysis, including standardized techniques outlined by regulatory bodies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Average values revealed that Cr (0.041) and Fe (2.312) concentrations surpassed the recommended limits for drinking water quality, posing serious threats to groundwater usability by humans. The trace elemental concentrations were ranked as: Li < Mn < Co < As < Mo < Zn < Al < Ba < Se < V < Ni < Cr < Cu < B < Fe < Sr. Various metal(loid) pollution indices, including degree of contamination, heavy metal evaluation index, heavy metal pollution index, and modified heavy metal index, indicated low levels of groundwater pollution. Similarly, low values of water pollution index and weighted arithmetic water quality index were observed for all groundwater points, signifying excellent groundwater quality for drinking and domestic purposes. Spatial distribution analysis showed diverse groundwater quality across the study area, with the eastern and western parts displaying a less desirable quality, while the northern has the best, making water users in the former more vulnerable to potential pollution effects. Thus, the zonation maps hinted the necessity for groundwater quality enhancement from the western to the northern parts. Chemometric analysis identified both human activities and geogenic factors as contributors to groundwater pollution, with human activities found to have more significant impacts. This research provides the scientific basis and insights for protecting the groundwater system and ensuring efficient water management.

Groundwater salinization in coastal aquifers is a major socioeconomic challenge in Oman and many other regions worldwide due to several anthropogenic activities and natural drivers. Therefore, assessing the salinization of groundwater resources is crucial to ensure the protection of water resources and sustainable management. The aim of this study is to apply a novel approach using predictive optimized ensemble trees-based (ETB) machine learning models, namely Catboost regression (CBR), Extra trees regression (ETR), and Bagging regression (BA), at two levels of modeling strategy for predicting groundwater TDS as an indicator for seawater intrusion in a coastal aquifer, Oman. At level 1, ETR and CBR models were used as base models or inputs for BA in level 2. The results show that the models at level 1 (i.e., ETR and CBR) yielded satisfactory results using a limited number of inputs (Cl, K, and Sr) from a few sets of 40 groundwater wells. The BA model at level 2 improved the overall performance of the modeling by extracting more information from ETR and CBR models at level 1 models. At level 2, the BA model achieved a significant improvement in accuracy (MSE = 0.0002, RSR = 0.062, R2 = 0.995 and NSE = 0.996) compared to each individual model of ETR (MSE = 0.0007, RSR = 0.245, R2 = 0.98 and NSE = 0.94), and CBR (MSE = 0.0035, RSR = 0.258, R2 = 0.933 and NSE = 0.934) at level 1 models in the testing dataset. BA model at level 2 outperformed all models regarding predictive accuracy, best generalization of new data, and matching the locations of the polluted and unpolluted wells. Our approach predicts groundwater TDS with high accuracy and thus provides early warnings of water quality deterioration along coastal aquifers which will improve water resources sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Therapy-related leukemia is a term that describes the occurrence of leukemia following exposure to hematotoxins and radiation to emphasize the difference from leukemia that arises de novo. Many agents and host factors contribute to this entity of leukemias. Therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia has an extensive literature review in contrast to therapy-related chronic myeloid leukemia (t-CML). Radioactive iodine (RAI), an established agent in the management of differentiated thyroid carcinomas, has raised concern due to its possible carcinogenic effects. SUMMARY: In this article, we reviewed all the reports from the 1960s to date related to t-CML following RAI on Google Scholar and PubMed. We have identified 14 reports and found that most reports were for men under the age of 60 years with primary papillary thyroid carcinoma and mixed follicular-papillary thyroid carcinoma who developed t-CML mainly between 4 and 7 years after exposure to varying doses of I131. However, the mean dose was 287.78 millicuries (mCi). It was reported that a statistically significant increase in leukemia following RAI therapy (relative risk of 2.5 for I131 vs. no I131). Also, there was a linear relationship between the cumulative dose of I131 and the risk of leukemia. Doses higher than 100 mCi were associated with a greater risk of developing secondary leukemia, and most of the leukemias developed within the initial 10 years of exposure. The precise mechanism through which RAI provokes leukemia is largely unclear. A few mechanisms have been proposed. KEY MESSAGES: Although the risk for t-CML appears to be low based on current reports and does not represent a contraindication to RAI therapy, it should not be disregarded. We suggest including it in the risk-benefit discussion before initiating this therapy. Long-term follow-up for patients is advisable for those who received doses over 100 mCi with a complete blood count, possibly yearly, for the first 10 years. The new onset of significant leukocytosis post RAI exposure should raise the suspicion for t-CML. Further studies are needed to establish or refute a causal relationship.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Adults with cancer are immunocompromised due to several causes including cancer itself and immunosuppressive therapy. Thus, cancer patients are more susceptible to develop COVID-19 infection. As COVID-19 vaccines became available, patients with cancer would benefit from receiving the vaccine. This article aims to review the recent evidences and recommendations about COVID-19 vaccination in cancer patients.Current guidelines recommend that patients with cancer should have the priority to receive the vaccine given their immunocompromised state. The timing of administration varies depending on cancer type and treatment. Generally, the vaccine should be given before starting the chemotherapy if possible or in between chemotherapy cycles and away from nadir phase. For other cancer treatments, it is recommended to give the vaccine when there is evidence of blood count recovery. In general, induction therapy and treatment for newly diagnosed patients should not be delayed for the vaccination purpose. It is noteworthy to mention that cancer patients especially those with hematologic malignancies might have absented or attenuated response to the vaccine due to their pathophysiological status.On the other hand, the current vaccine guidelines have been criticized for lacking evidence on some important topics that need to be addressed. Firstly, some vaccines have been granted an emergency use authorization, prior to the usual comprehensive safety and efficacy evaluation process. Secondly, specific populations including cancer patients were excluded from the approval trials for safety reasons. Finally, some recommendations regarding the COVID-19 vaccines are extrapolated from other vaccines studies. Further studies are required to fill these gaps and observational studies that include cancer patients are warranted to have a better understanding of the safety and efficacy of the vaccines in cancer patients.

Unconsolidated earthen surface materials can retain heavy metals originating from different sources. These metals are dangerous to humans as well as the immediate environment. This danger leads to the need to assess various geochemical conditions of the materials. In this study, the assessment of topsoil materials' contamination with heavy metals (HMs) was conducted. The material's representative spatial samples were taken from various sources: agricultural, industrial, and residential areas. The materials include topsoil, eolian deposits, and other unconsolidated earthen materials. The samples were analyzed using the ICP-OES. The obtained results based on the experimental procedure indicated that the average levels of the heavy metals were: As (1.21 ± 0.69 mg/kg), Ba (110.62 ± 262 mg/kg), Hg (0.08 ± 0.18 mg/kg), Pb (6.34 ± 14.55 mg/kg), Ni (8.95 ± 5.66 mg/kg), V (9.98 ± 6.08 mg/kg), Cd (1.18 ± 4.33 mg/kg), Cr (31.79 ± 37.9 mg/kg), Cu (6.76 ± 12.54 mg/kg), and Zn (23.44 ± 84.43 mg/kg). Subsequently, chemometrics modeling and a prediction of Cr concentration (mg/kg) were performed using three different modeling techniques, including two artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, namely, generalized neural network (GRNN) and Elman neural network (Elm NN) models, as well as a classical multivariate statistical technique (MST). The results indicated that the AI-based models have a superior ability in estimating the Cr concentration (mg/kg) than MST, whereby GRNN can enhance the performance of MST up to 94.6% in the validation step. The concentration levels of most metals were found to be within the acceptable range. The findings indicate that AI-based models are cost-effective and efficient tools for trace metal estimations from soil.

BACKGROUND: Rituximab is used as second-line therapy in patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) who do not respond to first-line management. The response rate for Rituximab is variable in different populations ranging from 30% to 90%. The adverse effects of rituximab in patients with ITP range from infusion site reactions to the reactivation of hepatitis B virus and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and interpopulation variation. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, retrospective study in Qatar's National Center for Cancer Care & Research. The study included patients with chronic refractory ITP who received rituximab as second-line therapy. Descriptive and summary statistics were used to describe the sociodemographic parameters of the study cohort. RESULTS: Of the 41 patients with chronic ITP, 26 were Arabs, 12 were Asians, and 3 were of other ethnicities. Rituximab was associated with an overall response rate of 80.4%. Arabic patients had the highest clinical response (84.6%) among the ethnicities with the lowest adverse effects (11.5%). Asians had a response rate of 66.6%, and adverse effects were seen in 16.7% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: In chronic refractory ITP, rituximab appears to have a better clinical response in the Arabic population with minimal toxicity than in other ethnicities.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with multiple comorbidities who have coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have high morbidity and mortality. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency has been shown to have an enhanced effect on coronavirus in an earlier study. METHODS: We conducted this comparative observational study to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 disease on G6PD deficiency based on the hematologic parameters, COVID-19-related hospitalizations, and mortality in the state of Qatar between January 2020 and May 2020 at four designated COVID-19 facilities. We identified 41 patients with G6PD deficiency who had documented COVID-19 infection. We compared the results with 241 patients with COVID-19 infection who tested negative for G6PD deficiency.: Results: Comparing the COVID-19 positive G6PD deficient with COVID-19 positive G6PD normal activity showed that G6PD normal group had higher white blood cell count (WBC), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), lymphocytes, eosinophils, and monocytes counts versus the G6PD deficient group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: When compared with COVID-19 patients with normal G6PD, patients with COVID-19 infection and G6PD deficiency had lower total WBC, ANC, lymphocyte, monocyte, and eosinophil counts. However, no evidence of increased hemolysis, thrombosis, morbidity, or mortality was observed in COVID-19 patients with G6PD deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is commonly encountered in Africa and Middle Eastern countries. The causative mutation in the gene encoding the hemoglobin subunit ß (HBB) leads to various genotypic variants of the disease. This results in varied phenotypes, with a spectrum of complications, from benign to fatal. Hemoglobin SS (HBSS) genotype is associated with most of these complications; hence, it is a severe form of SCD. On the other hand, rare genotypes such as hemoglobin SE (HBSE) are considered benign. There is limited literature about the clinical manifestations and characteristics of patients with HBSE. We pooled all available data describing the phenotypic manifestations of HBSE heterozygote worldwide to perform a systematic review. METHODS: We performed a systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines using PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar databases. Two independent reviewers (FA and IK) evaluated studies for eligibility and extracted data. We synthesized data on demographics, manifestations, and management of HBSE disease. PROSPERO Registration Number: CRD42021229877. RESULTS: We found 68 HBSE patients reported in the literature. 24 cases were extracted from case reports whereas 44 cases from case series and retrospective studies. Turkey reported the highest number of patients (n = 22). 32 (47%) of the patients were males. The mean age was 20.9 ± 18.26 years. The mean HBS and HBE percentages were 61.1% ± 7.25% and 32.3% ± 5.06%, respectively, whereas the mean hemoglobin was 11.64 ± 1.73 g/dl. Reported manifestations of HBSE disease included acute vaso-occlusive pain crisis (n = 22, 32.3%), splenomegaly (n = 11, 16.1%), hemolytic anemia (n = 10, 14.7%), infections (n = 8. 11.7%), bone infarction (n = 4, 5.8%), gallstones (n = 3, 4.4%), venous thromboembolism (VTE) (n = 2, 2.9%) and stroke (n = 2, 2.9%), and hematuria (n = 2, 2.9%). Death due to HBSE complications was reported in three patients. CONCLUSION: HBSE is a rare genotypic variant of SCD. It has been considered a benign form; however, there are multiple reports of severe complications. Severe complications observed in HBSE disease include vaso-occlusive crisis, acute chest syndrome, stroke, bone marrow embolism, and death.

OBJECTIVE: It is debatable whether BCR-ABL1 transcript type has an impact on outcome of treatment of patients with CML, and it is not widely studied whether body weight influences response to treatment. In this study, we tried to find out if any of these factors has an impact on response to treatment and outcome. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the files of 79 patients being treated in our center for CML with known BCR-ABL1 breakpoints, and patients' management and response assessment was done based on ELN 2013 guidelines. The analysis was performed based on two main groups, obese vs. normal BMI, and then based on BCR-ABL1 transcripts: e13a2 vs. e14a2. Cumulative incidence of MMR, CCyR, and DMR were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve method, and comparisons between groups were performed by the Log-rank/Gray test methods. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: In the patient-cohort studied, there was no statistically significant difference in molecular response between patients with CML based on body weight or transcript type although patients in the obesity group achieved higher and faster MMR with no statistical significance.

RESUMEN

The overall survival of patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) treated by using tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is very close to that of the healthy population. However, little is known about the effect of specific measures such as intermittent fasting, especially during Ramadan period. A 3-year retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the effect of fasting on patients with CML receiving TKIs by evaluating certain clinical, hematological, and molecular parameters. A total of 49 patients were eligible, with a median age of 46 years (range: 22-86), of these 36 (73.5%) were males and 13 (26.5%) were females. Twenty-seven (55%) patients are Middle Eastern, while 16 (32.7%) from the Indian subcontinent, and 6 (12.3%) Africans. Imatinib was the most common TKI; used in 25 patients (51%). The mean White blood cells (WBCs), neutrophils, and BCR-ABL were found to be reduced after fasting compared to before and during with statistical difference. The use of TKIs while fasting did not result in significant changes in hematological nor BCR-ABL levels in our study. Patients who wish to practice intermittent fasting may be reassured in this regard, yet physicians can adopt the safe trial approach, where they allow the patients to fast, but with instructions such as when to break fasting.

Endophytic fungi isolated from desert plants are among the less known organisms with potentially valuable applications. The bioactivities of an endophytic fungus isolated from Aloe vera, a plant found in central regions of Asir desert, Saudi Arabia. Based on primary phytochemical screening, an efficient isolate was selected and identified according to the sequence analysis of the internal spacer regions ITS1, ITS4 and the 5.8S region as Preussia africana belonging to the family Sporormiaceae. The crude extract of this fungus was evaluated for its bioactivities. Under static conditions, the crude extract at a concentration of 500 µg/mL had a strong 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging rate of 87%, whereas a higher concentration (100 µg/mL) had an astounding wound healing effect (42.6% at 48 h) when compared to positive control. Moreover, the crude extract with a concentration of 50 µg/mL was active against almost all cancer cell lines such as HeLa (cervical cancer), Hep G2 (liver cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer), A549 (lung cancer), LN-229 (glioblastoma), A-431 (skin cancer), and kidney cell line (HEK 293T). The results suggest that the endophytic fungus P. africana from A. vera has wide therapeutic applications against severe disease conditions.

Hepatitis B reactivation (HBVr) in cancer patients is a well-established complication due to chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression. Studies have reported HBVr associated with immunosuppressive medications, such as rituximab, methotrexate, and high dose steroids. There are different risks for different types of chemotherapy with rituximab carrying one of the highest risks for hepatitis B reactivation. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are the standard of care in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The risk of HBVr in chronic myeloid leukemia has been reported in many studies, but to this date, there are no clear guidelines or recommendations regarding screening and monitoring of HBV in CML patients receiving TKIs. We conducted this review to identify the risk of HBVr in patients with CML who are treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. We recommend testing for HBV status in patients who are to be treated with TKIs and to consider giving prophylaxis in those who are positive for HBsAg at baseline. More studies are needed to assess the risk of reactivation in patients with Hepatitis B core antibody positive receiving TKIs. Currently, monitoring such patients for reactivation may be the best strategy.

Strain SY-07 was isolated from decaying leaves of Avicennia marina collected from Syhat mangroves, Dammam city, Arabian Gulf, Saudi Arabia. Phylogenetic analyses of three genes [D1/D2 region of the LSU and SSU rRNA genes and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region] showed that strain SY-07 represents a novel species of the genus Saturnispora distinct from closely related species. Saturnispora mendoncae was the most closely related species with an LSU gene sequence similarity of 89.3 % (58 nucleotide substitutions and four indels out of 578 nt), 97 % similarity for the SSU gene (42 nucleotide substitutions and 10 indels out of 1614 nt) and 88 % similarity for the ITS region (15 nucleotide substitutions and eight indels out of 430 nt). In addition, strain SY-07 differed from S. mendoncae by its ability to assimilate d-galactose (weak), d-xylose (weak), meso-erythritol (delayed), glucono-δ-lactone, citrate (delayed) and ethylamine. S. mendoncae produced persistent asci that contain two to four spherical ascospores and lacked pseudohyphae, while sexual reproduction was not observed in strain SY-07 and extensive and pseudohyphae were present. Strain SY-07 was able to grow at between 25 and 40 °C, while S. mendoncae did not grow at 37 °C. The name Saturnispora mangrovi f.a., sp. nov. is proposed for strain SY-07. The holotype is CBS 15874, with the ex-type culture AUMC 12005. The MycoBank number for Saturnispora mangrovi f.a., sp. nov. is MB 827036.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) might be associated with underlying hematological malignancies such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia. However, the association between AIHA and chronic myelogenous leukemia is extremely unusual. SUMMARY: We reviewed case reports and series of 54 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) who developed autoimmune hemolysis between 1952 and 2018. Almost all the patients were in the chronic phase and were classified into transplant and non-transplant groups. The onset of autoimmune hemolysis was earlier in the transplant group and required second- and third-line therapy to control it. The etiology of hemolysis is poorly understood but attributed in the transplant group to immune reconstitution, viral infections, or CML relapse. On the other hand, it is thought to be related in the non-transplant group to CML medications, especially interferon. Key Messages: Although AIHA is uncommon in chronic myelogenous leukemia patients, it should be in the differential diagnosis list for those who develop a sudden drop in hemoglobin without a bleeding source.

In the context of diligent efforts to improve the tumor targeting efficiency of drug carriers, a shape-persistent polymersome which possess a pH-tunable membrane as well as folate targeting antennae is reported. The membrane of such polymersomes behaves as gate which undergoes "on" and "off" switches in response to pH stimuli. Thus, polymersomes can effectively prohibit the premature release of chemotherapeutic agents such as doxorubicin in physiological conditions, but promote drug release once they are triggered in the acidified endosomal compartment. Importantly, the folate moieties are installed on the surface of polymersomes as protruding antennae by doping the polymersomes with folate-terminated block copolymers designed to have longer PEG segments. Thereby, the folate moieties are freed from concealment and steric effects exerted by the dense PEG corona. The cellular uptake of the FA-antennae polymersomes by tumor cells is significantly enhanced facilitated by the freely accessible folate antennae; however, the normal cells record a low level of cellular uptake due to the stealth property of the PEG corona. Overall, the excellent biocompatibility, controlled permeability, targeted internalization, as well as selective cytotoxicity of such polymersomes set up the basis for properly smart carrier for targeted drug delivery.
