RESUMEN

Quantum key distribution (QKD)1-3 is a theoretically secure way of sharing secret keys between remote users. It has been demonstrated in a laboratory over a coiled optical fibre up to 404 kilometres long4-7. In the field, point-to-point QKD has been achieved from a satellite to a ground station up to 1,200 kilometres away8-10. However, real-world QKD-based cryptography targets physically separated users on the Earth, for which the maximum distance has been about 100 kilometres11,12. The use of trusted relays can extend these distances from across a typical metropolitan area13-16 to intercity17 and even intercontinental distances18. However, relays pose security risks, which can be avoided by using entanglement-based QKD, which has inherent source-independent security19,20. Long-distance entanglement distribution can be realized using quantum repeaters21, but the related technology is still immature for practical implementations22. The obvious alternative for extending the range of quantum communication without compromising its security is satellite-based QKD, but so far satellite-based entanglement distribution has not been efficient23 enough to support QKD. Here we demonstrate entanglement-based QKD between two ground stations separated by 1,120 kilometres at a finite secret-key rate of 0.12 bits per second, without the need for trusted relays. Entangled photon pairs were distributed via two bidirectional downlinks from the Micius satellite to two ground observatories in Delingha and Nanshan in China. The development of a high-efficiency telescope and follow-up optics crucially improved the link efficiency. The generated keys are secure for realistic devices, because our ground receivers were carefully designed to guarantee fair sampling and immunity to all known side channels24,25. Our method not only increases the secure distance on the ground tenfold but also increases the practical security of QKD to an unprecedented level.

With the rapid development of superconducting quantum computing and the implementation of surface code, large-scale quantum computing is emerging as an urgent demand. In a superconducting computing system, the qubit is maintained in a cryogenic environment to avoid thermal excitation. Thus, the transmission of control signals, which are generated at room temperature, is needed. Typically, the transmission of these signals to the qubit relies on a coaxial cable wiring approach. However, in a large-scale computing system with hundreds or even thousands of qubits, the coaxial cables will pose great space and heat load to the dilution refrigerator. Here, to tackle this problem, we propose and demonstrate a direct-modulation-based optical transmission line. In our experiment, the average single-qubit XEB error and control error are measured as 0.139% and 0.014% separately, demonstrating the feasibility of the optical wiring approach and paving the way for large-scale superconducting quantum computing.

We present the results for the complete next-to-leading order electroweak corrections to pp→HH at the Large Hadron Collider, focusing on the dominant gluon-gluon fusion process. While the corrections at the total cross-section level are approximately -4%, those near the energy of HH production threshold exceed +15%, and corrections at the high-energy region are around -10%, leading to a shape distortion for the differential distributions. Our findings substantially diminish the theoretical uncertainties associated with this pivotal process, providing valuable input for understanding the shape of the Higgs boson potential upon comparison with experimental measurements.

Accurate discrimination and classification of unknown species are the basis to predict its characteristics or applications to make correct decisions. However, for biogenic solutions that are ubiquitous in nature and our daily lives, direct determination of their similarities and disparities by their molecular compositions remains a scientific challenge. Here, we explore a standard and visualizable ontology, termed "biogenic solution map", that organizes multifarious classes of biogenic solutions into a map of hierarchical structures. To build the map, a novel 4-dimensional (4D) fingerprinting method based on data-independent acquisition data sets of untargeted metabolomics is developed, enabling accurate characterization of complex biogenic solutions. A generic parameter of metabolic correlation distance, calculated based on averaged similarities between 4D fingerprints of sample groups, is able to define "species", "genus", and "family" of each solution in the map. With the help of the "biogenic solution map", species of unknown biogenic solutions can be explicitly defined. Simultaneously, intrinsic correlations and subtle variations among biogenic solutions in the map are accurately illustrated. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that samples of the same analyte but prepared by alternative protocols may have significantly different metabolic compositions and could be classified into different "genera".

RESUMEN

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI QKD) provides immunity against all attacks targeting measurement devices. It is essential to implement MDI QKD in the future global-scale quantum communication network. Toward this goal, we demonstrate a robust MDI QKD fully covering daytime, overcoming the high background noise that prevents BB84 protocol even when using a perfect single-photon source. Based on this, we establish a hybrid quantum communication network that integrates free-space and fiber channels through Hong-Ou-Mandle (HOM) interference. Additionally, we investigate the feasibility of implementing HOM interference with moving satellites. Our results serve as a significant cornerstone for future integrated space-ground quantum communication networks that incorporate measurement-device-independent security.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested a relationship between type A personality and the occurrence of coronary artery disease, so we used intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) to investigate the morphological characteristics of culprit plaques in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients with different scores of type A personality.Methods and Results: A total of 221 AMI patients who underwent preintervention imaging of culprit lesions and an assessment of type A behavior pattern were included. According to the scores for the behavior questionnaire, these patients were divided into 3 groups: non-type A personality (n=91), intermediate personality (n=73), and type A personality (n=57). Patients with type A personality were younger (P=0.003) and had a higher level of total cholesterol (P=0.029) and more severe luminal stenosis (P=0.046). In addition, the prevalence of microchannels (P<0.001), macrophage accumulation (P<0.001), and plaque rupture (P=0.010) with greater number (P<0.001), cavity angle (P<0.001), and length (P<0.001) was highest in the type A personality group. CONCLUSIONS: The culprit lesions of AMI patients with increased scores for type A personality had more severe coronary luminal stenosis, and the proportion of vulnerable features was increased.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis has been recognized as a chronic inflammation initiated by dysfunction of endothelial cell that contributes to the increased morbidity and mortality of severe cardiovascular events. The reported important role of microRNA-98 (miR-98) in regulation of endothelial cell behaviors prompt us to hypothesize that miR-98 could be involved in the process of atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: The current research showed the miR-98 expression was gradually down-regulated in atherosclerotic mouse arteries isolated from ApoE ablation mice subjected to high fat diet. Additionally, a dramatically reduced miR-98 expression in endothelial cells administrated to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) but a slight down-regulated level was found in macrophages. Functionally, attenuated miR-98 expression promoted secretion of chemokines and adhesion molecules in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) induced by Ox-LDL, which subsequently increased infiltration and pro-inflammatory genes expression of macrophages, as well as the foam cell formation. Mechanistically, in vitro experiments indicated that the endothelial cell dysfunction regulated by miR-98 knockdown was partially contributed by upregulated expression of HMGB1. Furthermore, the animal experiment with ApoE-/- mice administrated with miR-98 inhibitor demonstrated that miR-98 silencing enhanced the atherosclerotic lesions in aorta and aortic sinus that were accompanied with increased adhesion molecules, chemokines, and pro-inflammatory markers expression. CONCLUSION: MicroRNA-98 knockdown promoted endothelial cell dysfunction to affect the inflammatory state of macrophage and the development of atherosclerosis, at least partially, through direct targeting HMGB1. Collected, these data suggested that miR-98 could be a novel drug target for atherogenesis management.

BACKGROUND: The EROSION study (Effective Anti-Thrombotic Therapy Without Stenting: Intravascular Optical Coherence Tomography-Based Management in Plaque Erosion) allowed us to observe the healing process of coronary plaque erosion in vivo. The present study aimed to investigate the incidence of newly formed healed plaque and different baseline characteristics of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients caused by plaque erosion with or without newly formed healed plaque using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: A total of 137 ACS patients with culprit plaque erosion who underwent pre-intervention OCT imaging and received no stent implantation were enrolled. Patients were stratified according to the presence or absence of newly formed healed phenotype at 1-month (137 patients) or 1-year OCT follow-up (52 patients). Patient's baseline clinical, angiographic, OCT characteristics and outcomes were compared. RESULTS: There were 55.5% (76/137) of patients developed healed plaque at 1 month, and 69.2% (36/52) of patients developed healed plaque at 1 year. Patients with newly formed healed plaque had larger thrombus burden, and lower degree of area stenosis (AS%) at baseline than those without, and thrombus burden and AS% were predictors of plaque healing. The healing process was accompanied by the significant increase of AS% and incidence of microchannels, and greater inflammatory response. The outcomes appeared to be similar between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Newly formed healed plaque was found in more than half of ACS patients with plaque erosion without stenting. Patients with newly formed healed plaque had lower luminal stenosis and larger thrombus burden. During healing process, luminal stenosis increased gradually.

Quantum interference plays an essential role in understanding the concepts of quantum physics. Moreover, the interference of photons is indispensable for large-scale quantum information processing. With the development of quantum networks, interference of photons transmitted through long-distance fiber channels has been widely implemented. However, quantum interference of photons using free-space channels is still scarce, mainly due to atmospheric turbulence. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with photons transmitted by free-space channels. Two typical photon sources, i.e., correlated photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process and weak coherent states, are employed. A visibility of 0.744 ± 0.013 is observed by interfering with two photons generated in the SPDC process, exceeding the classical limit of 0.5. Our results demonstrate that the quantum property of photons remains even after transmission through unstable free-space channels, indicating the feasibility and potential application of free-space-based quantum interference in quantum information processing.

Long-distance quantum state transfer (QST), which can be achieved with the help of quantum teleportation, is a core element of important quantum protocols. A typical situation for QST based on teleportation is one in which two remote communication partners (Alice and Bob) are far from the entanglement source (Charlie). Because of the atmospheric turbulence, it is challenging to implement the Bell-state measurement after photons propagate in atmospheric channels. In previous long-distance free-space experiments, Alice and Charlie always perform local Bell-state measurement before the entanglement distribution process is completed. Here, by developing a highly stable interferometer to project the photon into a hybrid path-polarization dimension and utilizing the satellite-borne entangled photon source, we demonstrate proof-of-principle QST at the distance of over 1200 km assisted by prior quantum entanglement shared between two distant ground stations with the satellite Micius. The average fidelity of transferred six distinct quantum states is 0.82±0.01, exceeding the classical limit of 2/3 on a single copy of a qubit.

BACKGROUND: Plaque erosion can occur quietly without causing clinical symptoms, followed by a healing process resulting in healed plaque. This study aimed to assess culprit and non-culprit plaque characteristics of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) caused by plaque erosion with vs. without healed phenotype at the culprit plaque using optical coherence tomography (OCT).Methods and Results: A total of 117 AMI patients caused by plaque erosion who underwent OCT imaging of 3 coronary arteries were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on presence or absence of a healed phenotype at the culprit site. Culprit and non-culprit plaque characteristics were compared between the 2 groups. A healed phenotype at the culprit lesion was identified in 47.9% of AMI patients caused by plaque erosion. Patients with a healed phenotype at the culprit site were more frequently with hyperlipidemia, and had a higher prevalence of macrophage infiltration, microchannels, cholesterol crystals, and calcification at the culprit lesion. Moreover, patients with a healed phenotype at the culprit site had more non-culprit plaques and more characteristics of plaque vulnerability at the non-culprit lesion. In addition, patients with a healed phenotype at the culprit site presented with more severe luminal stenosis at both the culprit and non-culprit lesion. CONCLUSIONS: A healed phenotype was identified in 47.9% of AMI patients caused by plaque erosion at the culprit site. A healed phenotype within eroded culprit plaque was associated with signs of pancoronary vulnerability and advanced atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) remains a significant health issue in children. The worldwide evolution of pediatric AGE pathogens had been recorded since the introduction of rotavirus vaccine. Ten years after the rotavirus vaccine was introduced to the private sectors in Taiwan, a nationwide study was conducted to elucidate the epidemiological changes among major AGE pathogens. METHODS: From January 2014 to December 2017, children younger than 5 years old, hospitalized with AGE at 10 hospitals across Taiwan were enrolled. Stool specimens were tested for Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., Clostridiodes difficile, norovirus, and rotavirus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The epidemiological and clinical information was collected. RESULTS: Enteric pathogen were detected in 1983 (42.2%) of 4700 subjects, with Salmonella spp. (12.5%) being the leading cause of AGE, followed by norovirus (11.2%), rotavirus (8.7%), C. difficile (4.2%), Campylobacter spp. (1.0%), and a mixture of at least 2 of 5 above-mentioned pathogens (4.6%). The case distributions varied across different regions. In eastern Taiwan, rotavirus (21/131, 16.0%) remained the most common pathogen detected. The rotavirus vaccine uptake rate is significantly lower in patients with rotavirus AGE. Besides, rotavirus AGE frequently occurred in children with foreign parent(s), Taiwanese indigenous people, and those with the household monthly income < NT$ 60,000. CONCLUSION: Salmonella spp. and norovirus were two major pathogens of pediatric AGE in Taiwan during 2014-17. Providing low-to middle-income households with free rotavirus vaccine nationwide and an industry-led act to reduce salmonellosis should be considered by the authorities.

Sequential window acquisition of all theoretical spectra (SWATH) as a typical data-independent acquisition (DIA) strategy is favorable for untargeted metabolomics. It could theoretically acquire product ions of all precursor ions, including precursor ions showing chromatographic peaks of rather poor qualities. However, existing data processing methods present limited capabilities in capturing poor-quality peaks of precursor ions. Thus, although their product ions could be acquired, their precursor ions are absent. Here, we present a new strategy, chromatographic retention behavior-SWATH (CRB-SWATH), that could unbiasedly capture poor-quality peaks and provide high resolutions of multiplexed mass spectroscopy (MS/MS) spectra in SWATH datasets. CRB-SWATH monitors CRBs of SWATH-MS signals under a series of altered elution gradients. As signals of compounds differ from noise by showing CRBs, both the precursor and fragment ions are captured, while ignoring their peak qualities. Moreover, CRB-SWATH offers good chances to resolve highly multiplexed MS/MS spectra in SWATH datasets because precursor ions coeluted in a single elution gradient often present different CRBs. In the untargeted metabolic analysis of Hela cell extracts, CRB-SWATH showed the advantage in exclusively capturing 2645 ions of poor-quality peaks (i.e., tiny peaks, discontinuous ion traces, tailing peaks, zigzag peaks, etc.), accounting for 34.4% of all the untargeted precursor ions extracted. Therein, it is noteworthy that among 2116 negative ions detected in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) mode, 1284 poor-quality ion peaks (>60%) were exclusively captured by CRB-SWATH. As CRB-SWATH automatically captures a large sum of true ion peaks of poor qualities, extracts MS/MS spectra of high purities, and provides chromatographic retention behaviors of untargeted metabolites for identification and classification, it could be a useful metabolomics tool for understanding biological phenomena better.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is an important risk factor of plaque erosion. This study aimed to investigate the predictors of plaque erosion in current and non-current smokers presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).Methods and Results:A total of 1,320 STEMI patients with culprit plaque rupture or plaque erosion detected by pre-intervention optical coherence tomography were divided into a current smoking group (n=715) and non-current smoking group (n=605). Plaque erosion accounted for 30.8% (220/715) of culprit lesions in the current smokers and 21.2% (128/605) in the non-current smokers. Multivariable analysis showed age <50 years, single-vessel disease and the absence of dyslipidemia were independently associated with plaque erosion rather than plaque rupture, regardless of smoking status. In current smokers, diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR]: 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.10-0.83; P=0.021) was negatively associated with plaque erosion as compared with plaque rupture. In non-current smokers, minimal lumen area (MLA, OR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.16-1.62; P<0.001) and nearby bifurcation (OR: 3.20; 95% CI: 1.98-5.16; P<0.001) were positively related to plaque erosion, but not plaque rupture. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with STEMI, the presence of diabetes mellitus significantly increased the risk of rupture-based STEMI but may not have reduced the risk of plaque erosion-based STEMI in current smokers. Nearby bifurcation and larger MLA were associated with plaque erosion in non-current smokers.

Internal gravity waves, the subsurface analogue of the familiar surface gravity waves that break on beaches, are ubiquitous in the ocean. Because of their strong vertical and horizontal currents, and the turbulent mixing caused by their breaking, they affect a panoply of ocean processes, such as the supply of nutrients for photosynthesis, sediment and pollutant transport and acoustic transmission; they also pose hazards for man-made structures in the ocean. Generated primarily by the wind and the tides, internal waves can travel thousands of kilometres from their sources before breaking, making it challenging to observe them and to include them in numerical climate models, which are sensitive to their effects. For over a decade, studies have targeted the South China Sea, where the oceans' most powerful known internal waves are generated in the Luzon Strait and steepen dramatically as they propagate west. Confusion has persisted regarding their mechanism of generation, variability and energy budget, however, owing to the lack of in situ data from the Luzon Strait, where extreme flow conditions make measurements difficult. Here we use new observations and numerical models to (1) show that the waves begin as sinusoidal disturbances rather than arising from sharp hydraulic phenomena, (2) reveal the existence of >200-metre-high breaking internal waves in the region of generation that give rise to turbulence levels >10,000 times that in the open ocean, (3) determine that the Kuroshio western boundary current noticeably refracts the internal wave field emanating from the Luzon Strait, and (4) demonstrate a factor-of-two agreement between modelled and observed energy fluxes, which allows us to produce an observationally supported energy budget of the region. Together, these findings give a cradle-to-grave picture of internal waves on a basin scale, which will support further improvements of their representation in numerical climate predictions.

Satellite-based quantum communication is a promising approach for realizing global-scale quantum networks. For free-space quantum channel, single-mode fiber coupling is particularly important for improving the signal-to-noise ratio of daylight quantum key distribution (QKD) and compatibility with standard fiber-based QKD. However, achieving a highly efficient and stable single-mode coupling efficiency under strong atmospheric turbulence remains experimentally challenging. Here, we develop a single-mode receiver with an adaptive optics (AO) system based on a modal version of the stochastic parallel gradient descent (M-SPGD) algorithm and test its performance over an 8 km urban terrestrial free-space channel. Under strong atmospheric turbulence, the M-SPGD AO system obtains an improvement of about 3.7 dB in the single-mode fiber coupling efficiency and a significant suppression of fluctuation, which can find its applications in free-space long-range quantum communications.

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD), based on two-photon interference, is immune to all attacks against the detection system and allows a QKD network with untrusted relays. Since the MDI-QKD protocol was proposed, fiber-based implementations aimed at longer distance, higher key rates, and network verification have been rapidly developed. However, owing to the effect of atmospheric turbulence, MDI-QKD over a free-space channel remains experimentally challenging. Herein, by developing a robust adaptive optics system, high-precision time synchronization and frequency locking between independent photon sources located far apart, we realized the first free-space MDI-QKD over a 19.2-km urban atmospheric channel, which well exceeds the effective atmospheric thickness. Our experiment takes the first step toward satellite-based MDI-QKD. Moreover, the technology developed herein opens the way to quantum experiments in free space involving long-distance interference of independent single photons.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) reduces both invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and other pneumococcal infections worldwide. We investigated the impact of stepwise implementation of childhood PCV programs on the prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia, severity of acute inflammation, and associations between breakthrough pneumonia and pneumococcal serotypes in Taiwan. METHODS: In total, 983 children diagnosed with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia were enrolled between January 2010 and December 2015. RESULTS: Proportions of pneumococcal vaccinations increased each year in age-stratified groups with PCV7 (32.2%) as the majority, followed by PCV13 (12.2%). The proportion of pneumococcal pneumonia decreased each year in age-stratified groups, especially in 2-5 year group. Serotype 19A is the leading serotype either in vaccinated (6.4%) or unvaccinated patients (5.2%). In particular, vaccinated patients had significantly higher lowest WBC, lower neutrophils, lower lymphocytes and lower CRP values than non-vaccinated patients (p < 0.05). After stratifying patients by breakthrough infection, those with breakthrough pneumococcal infection with vaccine coverage serotypes had more severe pneumonia disease (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Systematic childhood pneumococcal vaccination reduced the prevalence of community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia, especially in 2-5 year group. Serotype 19A was the major serotype for all vaccine types in patients with pneumococcal pneumonia and severity of acute inflammatory response was reduced in vaccinated patients.

Intuition from our everyday lives gives rise to the belief that information exchanged between remote parties is carried by physical particles. Surprisingly, in a recent theoretical study [Salih H, Li ZH, Al-Amri M, Zubairy MS (2013) Phys Rev Lett 110:170502], quantum mechanics was found to allow for communication, even without the actual transmission of physical particles. From the viewpoint of communication, this mystery stems from a (nonintuitive) fundamental concept in quantum mechanics-wave-particle duality. All particles can be described fully by wave functions. To determine whether light appears in a channel, one refers to the amplitude of its wave function. However, in counterfactual communication, information is carried by the phase part of the wave function. Using a single-photon source, we experimentally demonstrate the counterfactual communication and successfully transfer a monochrome bitmap from one location to another by using a nested version of the quantum Zeno effect.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the pathogens and to estimate the incidence of pediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Taiwan. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at eight medical centers from November 2010 to September 2013. Children aged 6 weeks to 18 years who met the radiologic criteria for pneumonia were enrolled. To detect classical and atypical bacteria and viruses, blood and pleural fluids were cultured, and respiratory specimens were examined by multiple conventional and molecular methods. RESULTS: At least one potential pathogen was identified in 705 (68.3%) cases of 1032 children enrolled, including bacteria in 420 (40.7%) cases, virus in 180 (17.4%) cases, and mixed viral-bacterial infection in 105 (10.2%) cases. Streptococcus pneumoniae (31.6%) was the most common pathogen, followed by Mycoplasma pneumoniae (22.6%). Adenovirus (5.9%) was the most common virus. RSV was significantly associated with children aged under 2 years, S. pneumoniae in children aged between 2 and 5 years, and M. pneumoniae in children aged >5 years. The annual incidence rate of hospitalization for CAP was highest in children aged 2-5 years (229.7 per 100,000). From 2011 to 2012, significant reduction in hospitalization rates pertained in children under 5 years of age, in pneumonia caused by pneumococcus, adenovirus or co-infections and complicated pneumonia. CONCLUSION: CAP related pathogens have changed after increased conjugated pneumococcal vaccination rates. This study described the latest incidences and trends of CAP pathogens, which are crucial for prompt delivery of appropriate therapy.
