RESUMEN

Titanium-based composites hold great promise in versatile functional application fields, including supercapacitors. However, conventional subtractive methods for preparing complex-shaped titanium-based composites generally suffer from several significant shortcomings, including low efficiency, strictly simple geometry, low specific surface area, and poor electrochemical performance of the products. Herein, three-dimensional composites of Ti/TiN nanotube arrays with hierarchically porous structures were prepared using the additive manufacturing method of selective laser melting combined with anodic oxidation and nitridation. The resultant Ti/TiN nanotube array composites exhibit good electrical conductivity, ultrahigh specific surface areas, and outstanding supercapacitor performances featuring the unique combination of a large specific capacitance of 134.4 mF/cm2 and a high power density of 4.1 mW/cm2, which was remarkably superior to that of their counterparts. This work is anticipated to provide new insights into the facile and efficient preparation of high-performance structural and functional devices with arbitrarily complex geometries and good overall performances.

RESUMEN

Bioisosterism is a valuable principle exploited in drug discovery to fine-tune physicochemical properties of bioactive compounds. Functionalized 3-aryl oxetanes, as an important class of bioisosteres for benzoyl groups (highly prevalent structures in approved drugs), have been rarely utilized in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals due to significant synthetic challenges. Here, we present a modular synthetic strategy based on the unexplored yet readily available reagents, oxetanyl trichloroacetimidates, inspired by Schmidt glycosylation, enabling easy access to a library of functionalized oxetanes. This operationally simple protocol leverages the vast existing libraries of aryl halides and various nucleophiles. The power and generality of this approach is demonstrated by late-stage functionalization of complex molecules, as well as the rapid synthesis of oxetane analogues of bioactive molecules and marketed drugs. Preliminary mechanistic study suggests that the oxygen atom in the oxetane ring plays a crucial role in stabilizing the carbocation intermediates.

RESUMEN

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are a type of innate immune cells that produce a large amount of IL-5 and IL-13 and two cytokines that are crucial for various processes such as allergic airway inflammation, tissue repair and tissue homeostasis. It is known that damaged epithelial-derived alarmins, such as IL-33, IL-25 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), are the predominant ILC2 activators that mediate the production of type 2 cytokines. In recent years, abundant studies have found that many factors can regulate ILC2 development and function. Hormones synthesized by the body's endocrine glands or cells play an important role in immune response. Notably, ILC2s express hormone receptors and their proliferation and function can be modulated by multiple hormones during allergic airway inflammation. Here, we summarize the effects of multiple hormones on ILC2-driven allergic airway inflammation and discuss the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic significance.

RESUMEN

Objective: To quantify the association between reduction in child mortality and routine immunization across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We used child mortality and vaccine coverage data from the Global Burden of Disease Study. We used a modified child survival framework and applied a mixed-effects regression model to estimate the reduction in deaths in children younger than 5 years associated with eight vaccines. Findings: Between 1990 and 2019, the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP), measles, rotavirus and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccines were significantly associated with an estimated 86.9 (95% confidence interval, CI: 57.2 to 132.4) million fewer deaths in children younger than 5 years worldwide. This decrease represented a 24.2% (95% CI: 19.8 to 28.9) reduction in deaths relative to a scenario without vaccines. The DTP and measles vaccines averted 46.7 (95% CI: 30.0 to 72.7) million and 37.9 (95% CI: 25.4 to 56.8) million deaths, respectively. Of the total reduction in child mortality associated with vaccines, 84.2% (95% CI: 83.0 to 85.1) occurred in 73 countries supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, with an estimated 45.4 (95% CI: 29.8 to 69.2) million fewer deaths from 2000 to 2019. The largest reductions in deaths associated with these four vaccines were in India, China, Ethiopia, Pakistan and Bangladesh (in order of the size of reduction). Conclusion: Vaccines continue to reduce childhood mortality significantly, especially in Gavi-supported countries, emphasizing the need for increased investment in routine immunization programmes.

RESUMEN

The flotation recovery of fine particles faces serious challenges due to the lack of kinetic energy required for supporting their radial displacement and attachment with bubbles. Generally, the hydrodynamic resistance and repulsive disjoining pressure successively inhibit the liquid outflow intervening between the bubble and solid surfaces. To quantitatively characterize the influence of the main repulsion on film thinning time, experiments have been designed in three different aqueous systems. Bubble surface mobility closely associated with hydrodynamic resistance was determined by the rising bubble technique, and the DLVO theory was employed to confirm the evolution of electrostatic repulsion. The film drainage process was then measured based on the high-speed microscopic interferometry. Furthermore, the influence of the main repulsion on bubble-solid surface interactions was examined by flotation recovery. Results show that the earlier buildup of hydrodynamic force ran through the whole film thinning process, and under immobile conditions, the central region gradually became dominant in film thinning due to the very limited fluid flow at the thinnest rim position. Therefore, to achieve the identical film thickness (∼100 nm), the large hydrodynamic resistance could prolong the film thinning time by about 1 order of magnitude, compared with that induced by electrostatic repulsion, which accounts for the increased flotation recovery by 10% using mobile bubbles. This study not only enhances the understanding of how typical repulsive forces work in film drainage dynamics but also opens up an avenue for enhancing flotation and avoiding wasting resources by modulating bubble surface mobility and thus micro/nanoscale fluid flow.

RESUMEN

Medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs, C14-C17) are frequently detected in diverse environmental media. It has been proposed to be listed in Annex A of the Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2023. Although MCCPs are a crucial health concern, their toxicity remains unclear. This study investigated the toxic effects of MCCPs (0.1-50 mg/kg body weight/day) on the thyroid gland of female Sprague-Dawley rats and characterized the potential toxic pathways via transcriptomics and metabolomics approaches. MCCPs exposure caused histopathological changes to the endoplasmic reticula and mitochondria in thyroid follicular cells at a dose of 50 mg/kg bw/d and increased serum thyrotropin-releasing hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormones, and thyroxine when exposed to a higher dose of MCCPs. Transcriptomic analysis indicated the excessive expression of key genes related to thyroid hormone synthesis induced by MCCPs. Integrating the dual-omics analysis revealed mitochondrial dysfunction of the thyroid by mediating fatty acid oxidation, Kreb's cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. Significant metabolic toxicity on the thyroid might be linked to the characteristics of the chlorine content of MCCPs. This study revealed the toxicity of MCCPs to the thyroid gland via triggering thyroid hormone synthesis and interfering with mitochondrial function, which can provide new insights into the modes of action and mechanism-based risk assessment of MCCPs.

RESUMEN

The promotion of lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries is limited by the deficiency of suitable anode materials with desired electrochemical properties. In this work, the models of 2D single-layer SiP are constructed to explore its potential as an anode material for LIBs and SIBs using density functional theory (DFT). The diffusion of Li in bulk SiP is anisotropic. There is a low diffusion energy barrier of 0.28 eV along the X-axis. The low surface exfoliation energy suggests that there is a high probability of preparing 2D single-layer SiP experimentally. Its structure stability is verified by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations at 300 K and 400 K. The intercalation and diffusion behaviors of Li/Na on 2D single-layer SiP indicate that Li/Na tends to diffuse along the X-axis direction of 2D single-layer SiP. The diffusion energy barrier of Li/Na on 2D single-layer SiP is lower compared to that of bulk SiP. The conductivity of 2D single-layer SiP is improved after lithiation due to the upshift of Fermi levels. 2D single-layer SiP has a lower average open circuit voltage (1.50 V for LIBs and 1.08 V for SIBs) and a high theoretical capacity (520 mA h g-1). Hence, 2D single-layer SiP can be an ideal anode material for LIBs and SIBs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Insufficient endogenous nutrients in the broiler embryo can lead to muscle gluconeogenesis, which ultimately affects the post-hatching performance of chicks. This study investigated the effects of in ovo feeding (IOF) of N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) on the growth hormones, carcass yield, and meat quality in broilers. Fertile eggs from a 30-week-old Ross 308 breeder flock were divided into three treatment groups: NC (non-injection), SC (100 µL saline-injection), and NCG (2 mg NCG injection). Each group had six replicates, with 70 eggs per replicate during incubation. Injections were administered on the 17.5th day of embryonic development. After hatching, 270 chicks were selected for 42-day rearing for further sampling. RESULTS: Chicks in the NCG group had significantly higher body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) at the growing phase, increased growth and testosterone hormone in both feeding phases (21 and 42 days), and improved average daily gain (ADG) and food conversion ratio (FCR) in both grower and entire feeding phases (P < 0.05). Triiodothyronine (T3) and tetraiodothyronine (T4) levels, carcass yield, dressing, drum weight, breast muscle weight, drumstick weights, thighs, pectoralis major, and their part percentage of carcass were improved in the NCG group (P < 0.05), these effects were varied along feeding phases. Moreover, IOF of the NCG also improved pectoralis breast muscle color values at 24 h post mortem (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that NCG injection at the late embryonic age of broiler enhances growth performance and meat quality throughout the lifespan and this can probably be attributed to an increase in thyroid and testosterone hormones, indicating potential involvement in metabolic and nutrient partitioning pathway regulation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

Large-scale metal contamination across the food web is an intractable problem due to increasing pollutant emissions, atmospheric transport, and dry and wet deposition of elements. The present study focus on several trace metals that are rarely studied but have special toxicity, including tin (Sn), antimony (Sb), gold (Au), hafnium (Hf), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), tellurium (Te) and iridium (Ir). We investigated trace metals residues and distribution characteristics, and further evaluated the potential health risks from major daily food intakes in 33 cities in China. Sn, Sb, Ir, Hf, and Au were frequently detected in food samples with the concentrations ranged from ND (not detected) to 24.78 µg/kg ww (wet weight). Eggs exhibited the highest residual level of all detected metals (13.70 ± 14.70 µg/kg ww in sum), while the lowest concentrations were observed in vegetables (0.53 ± 0.17 µg/kg ww in sum). Sn accounting for more than 50% of the total trace metals concentration in both terrestrial and aquatic animal origin foods. In terrestrial plant origin foods, Sn and Ir were the most abundant elements. Hf and Au were the most abundant elements in egg samples. In addition, Sb and Ir showed a clear trophic dilution effect in terrestrial environments, while in aquatic ecosystems, Sn, Hf, and Au exhibited obvious trophic amplification effects. The calculated average estimated daily intake (EDI) via food consumption in five regions of China was 0.09 µg/(kg·day), implying the health risk of aforementioned elements was acceptable.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of EVA1A as a prognostic biomarker for Colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: The study utilized public databases to analyze the difference in Evala mRNA expression between CRC tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues. Additionallymunohistochemical staining was performed on 90 paired tissue samples to detect EVA1A expression. The relationship between EVA1A and clinicopathological features was examined, and a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was conducted. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were employed to identify prognostic factors affecting the overall survival (OS) of CRC patients. Results: The analysis revealed a significant increase in Evala mRNA expression in CRC tumor cells compared to normal controls from public databases (P< 0.05). Immunohistochemical staining further confirmed a significant upregulation of EVA1A expression in CRC tissues (P< 0.05). High EVA1A expression was associated with age, pathological M stage, total tumor stage, and Carbohydrate antigen CA19-9 (CA19-9). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated a significant association between high EVA1A expression and poor OS. Univariate and multivariate analysis identified EVA1A as an independent risk factor for CRC prognosis. Conclusion: The study suggests that EVA1A is increased in CRC tumor tissues and may serve as a potential biomarker for poor prognosis in CRC.

RESUMEN

Meningococcal vaccination strategies in China are intricate, including multiple vaccines targeting different serogroups. The current National Immunization Program (NIP) includes two polysaccharide vaccines for serogroups A and C (MPV-A and MPV-AC), covering limited serogroups and requiring adaptation. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of replacing the current strategy with alternative strategies utilizing non-NIP vaccines to inform policy decisions. From a societal perspective, a decision tree-Markov model was constructed to simulate the economic and health consequences of meningococcal disease in a 2019 birth cohort with four vaccination strategies. Epidemiology, vaccine efficacy, cost, and other parameters were derived from previous studies. We conducted sensitivity analyses to assess the robustness of the findings and explored prices for non-NIP vaccines that enable cost-effective strategies. Compared to the current strategy, alternative strategies using quadrivalent polysaccharide vaccine (MPV-4), bivalent conjugate vaccine (MCV-AC), and quadrivalent conjugate vaccine (MCV-4) could avoid 91, 286, and 455 more meningococcal cases. The ICERs were estimated at approximately $250 thousand/QALY, $450 thousand/QALY, and $1.5 million/QALY, all exceeding the threshold of three times GDP per capita. The alternative strategies were not cost-effective. However, if vaccine prices were reduced to $3.9 for MPV-4, $9.9 for MCV-AC, and $12 for MCV-4, the corresponding strategy would be cost-effective. The current meningococcal vaccination strategy in China could effectively prevent the disease at a low cost, but with limited serogroup coverage. Strategies using MPV-4, MCV-AC, or MCV-4 could increase health benefits at a substantial cost, and might become cost-effective if vaccine prices decrease.

RESUMEN

The solid waste produced from the germanium extraction process has attached much attention to its potential germanium sources. However, the elemental distribution of solid waste is still unclear. Therefore, the solid waste was studied using a sequential extraction procedure and characterizations including XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDS, and XAFS. It has been found that Ca, S, Fe, and Si could present crystal occurrence forms such as calcium sulfate, iron oxide hydroxide, or quartz. Furthermore, Si and Al can form a certain amount of amorphous substance. Accordingly, the sequential leaching results tell that Ca and S can be mostly leached out in pure water or weak acid solution, and more than 50% of Fe, Al, and Si were leached out in the reducible or oxidizable environment. Additionally, a part of S could be associated with Pb, generating a mostly Pb-bearing sulfate structure. Most of Zn was leached out from the reducible step, and only a very small part of Zn presented in the residual state, indicating that the majority of Zn might exist in an oxidation state and a small amount of Zn is associated in the amorphous phase. In terms of Ge, As, and Cr, almost all of them existed in the residual state. Ge should be in the occurrence of Si/Al amorphous structure. Similarly, Cr should be most likely to associate with silicates. Furthermore, As is mainly associated with iron mineral through the formation of the binuclear bidentate corner-sharing complex.

RESUMEN

N,N'-substituted p-phenylenediamines (PPDs) are widely used antioxidants in rubber tires, which could be released and accumulated in road dusts with rubber tires wear. As ozonation product of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) exhibited higher toxicity to coho salmon. However, studies on their environmental behaviors are still limited. Road dust is the major medium PPDs exist, which significantly affects the levels of PPDs in other mediums, especially surface water and particulate matter. In this study, road dust samples were collected in 55 major cities of China to explore the distribution characteristics of PPDs and 6PPD-Q. The concentrations of total PPDs (ΣPPDs) and 6PPD-Q in urban trunk road dust samples were in the ranges of 7.90-727 and 3.00-349 ng/g, with median concentrations of 68 and 49 ng/g, respectively. 6PPD and 6PPD-Q are the dominant components in most road dusts. The functional region-dependent pollution characteristics of PPDs and 6PPD-Q give the first finding that urban tunnel road was the highly polluted region, followed by urban trunk roads. Suburban road dusts had a lower pollution level. Moreover, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of PPDs and 6PPD-Q for children was much higher than adults.

RESUMEN

With the phase-out of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its replacement by perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs), there is a potential for increased exposure to various new PFECAs among the general population in China. While there are existing studies on dietary exposure to legacy perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), research on dietary exposure to PFECAs, especially among the general Chinese populace, remains scarce. In the present study, we investigated the distribution of PFECAs in dietary sources from 33 cities across five major regions in China, along with the associated dietary intake. Analysis indicated that aquatic animal samples contained higher concentrations of legacy PFASs compared to those from terrestrial animals and plants. In contrast, PFECAs were found in higher concentrations in plant and terrestrial animal samples. Notably, hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer (HFPO-DA) was identified as the dominant compound in vegetables, cereals, pork, and mutton across the five regions, suggesting widespread dietary exposure. PFECAs constituted the majority of PFAS intake (57 %), with the estimated daily intake (EDI) of HFPO-DA ranging from 2.33 to 3.96 ng/kg bw/day, which corresponds to 0.78-1.32 times the reference dose (RfD) (3.0 ng/kg bw/day) set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Given the ubiquity of HFPO-DA and many other PFECAs in the nationwide diet of China, there is an urgent need for further research into these chemicals to establish relevant safety benchmarks or consumption advisory values for the diet.

RESUMEN

Gullies with lower altitudes compared to the surrounding environment are widely distributed in farmland of the watershed and their numbers are still expanding. However, it is still unclear how these gullies regulate the functional insects in farmland. In this study, land use types combined with the herbaceous plant, herbicide application, soil moisture, topography and climatic factors during crop growth were considered to understand how gullies influence the dynamics of functional insects in farmland from a watershed (240 ha) of Northeast China. The primary findings demonstrate that the richness and abundance of functional insects are generally greatest in gullies, particularly in stable gullies, and decrease in the following order: forest belts, grasslands, and farmlands within the watershed. Notably, the ratios of beneficial insects to pests (BI/Pest) in terms of richness and abundance were lower in gullies before July but reversed after July, in comparison to farmland. Stable gullies exhibited higher BI/Pest abundance and diversity ratios than developing gullies. The richness and abundance of functional insects were higher in the middle sections of gullies compared to their heads and tails. Furthermore, the ratios of BI/Pest were generally lower in farmlands than in any gully position. Functional insect dynamics were mainly determined by season, followed by plant abundance and biomass in the gullies, and rarely by soil moisture in the both watershed and single gullies scales. Generally, the richness and abundance of functional insects in farmland were mainly influenced by gullies, especially influenced by the gully middle position. Insect composition in farmland influenced by stable gullies was stronger than by developing gullies, and stable gullies were more beneficial in reducing the threat of pests to crops in the farmland of the watershed.

RESUMEN

Pulmonary fibrosis is a debilitating lung disease marked by excessive fibrotic tissue accumulation, which significantly impairs respiratory function. Given the limitations of current therapies, there is an increasing interest in exploring traditional herbal formulations like Jie Geng Tang (JGT) for treatment. This study examines the potential of JGT and its bioactive component, quercetin, in reversing bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice. We employed a BLM-induced MLE-12 cell damage model for in vitro studies and a bleomycin-induced fibrosis model in C57BL/6 mice for in vivo experiments. In vitro assessments showed that JGT significantly enhanced cell viability and reduced apoptosis in MLE-12 cells treated with BLM. These findings underscore JGT's potential for cytoprotection against fibrotic agents. In vivo, JGT was effective in modulating the expression of E-cadherin and vimentin, key markers of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) pathway, indicating its role in mitigating EMT-associated fibrotic changes in lung tissue. Quercetin, identified through network pharmacology analysis as a potential key bioactive component of JGT, was highlighted for its role in the regulatory mechanisms underlying fibrosis progression, particularly through the modulation of the IL-17 pathway and Il6 expression. By targeting inflammatory pathways and key processes like EMT, JGT and quercetin offer a potent alternative to conventional therapies, meriting further clinical exploration to harness their full therapeutic potential in fibrotic diseases.

RESUMEN

Most trackers formulate visual tracking as common classification and regression (i.e., bounding box regression) tasks. Correlation features that are computed through depth-wise convolution or channel-wise multiplication operations are input into both the classification and regression branches for inference. However, this matching computation with the linear correlation method tends to lose semantic features and obtain only a local optimum. Moreover, these trackers use an unreliable ranking based on the classification score and the intersection over union (IoU) loss for the regression training, thus degrading the tracking performance. In this paper, we introduce a deformable transformer model, which effectively computes the correlation features of the training and search sets. A new loss called the quality-aware focal loss (QAFL) is used to train the classification network; it efficiently alleviates the inconsistency between the classification and localization quality predictions. We use a new regression loss called α-GIoU to train the regression network, and it effectively improves localization accuracy. To further improve the tracker's robustness, the candidate object location is predicted by using a combination of online learning scores with a transformer-assisted framework and classification scores. An extensive experiment on six testing datasets demonstrates the effectiveness of our method. In particular, the proposed method attains a success score of 71.7% on the OTB-2015 dataset and an AUC score of 67.3% on the NFS30 dataset, respectively.

RESUMEN

To elucidate the regulatory mechanisms that impact variability in albumen quality of laying hens from the peak of lay to the late production phase. A 60-wk study was conducted on a cohort of 20,000 Hy-Line Brown laying hens from 20 to 80 wk old. Before commencement at 20 wk, the 10-wk-old hens were acclimatized for 10 wk. This study examined changes in albumen quality, serum, and liver antioxidant capacity, magnum morphology, and expression of albumen-protein-related genes in the magnum. To reduce sampling error, we collected eggs (n = 90) from pre-determined cages at every sampling point (5-wk intervals), and 8 hens were selected at 10-wk intervals for blood and tissue collection. Our findings revealed that age significantly affected most evaluated parameters. Albumen gel properties, including hardness, gumminess, and chewiness, increased significantly with age (P < 0.05). With the increasing of hens' age from 20 to 80 wk, the albumen proportion of eggs was decreased, but eggshell proportion, yolk proportion, thick albumen proportion, thick to thin ratio, thick albumen solid content, albumen height, Haugh units (HU), and yolk color were increased and then decreased (P < 0.05). Compared to hens aged 20 to 60 wk, the hens (70-80 wk) had significantly reduced total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and glutathione levels (GSH) in the liver and lower serum TAC and superoxide dismutase levels (SOD) (P < 0.05). The magnum mucosal folds were highest in 40 to 60 wk-old hens, and the luminal diameter increased with age (P < 0.05). In the magnum, the mRNA expression levels for OVA, CPE, and NUP205 increased significantly between 30 and 40 wk, while FBN1 expression was higher between 30 and 50 wk (P < 0.05). At 70 to 80 wk, the expression of BRCA2 was significantly downregulated (P < 0.05). Albumen height, thick albumen proportion with protein secretion-related genes, enhanced antioxidant function, and luminal diameter correlated positively. However, the thick-to-thin albumen ratio negatively correlated with BRCA2, downregulated in aged laying hens. We used principal component and cluster analysis to deduce albumen quality changes during 3 phases: 25 to 35, 40 to 55, and 60 to 80 wk. The decline in albumen quality in aging hens is linked with decreased antioxidant capacity, magnum health, and downregulation of key genes involved in protein synthesis and secretion. These findings emphasize critical albumen quality changes in laying hens and suggest molecular pathways underlying age-related albumen quality alterations.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a meta-analysis of the association between postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), baseline characteristics of patients with herpes zoster (HZ), and early interventions. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted in seven databases, in June 2021 and updated in June 2022. Two investigators independently conducted literature screening and data extraction, and the studies were evaluated according to the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS: A total of 53 cohort studies were included. The meta-analyses identified skin lesions, timing of initial treatment (≥3 days), and comorbidities as potential risk factors for PHN. In contrast, female sex (odds ratio [OR] = 1.13, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.99-1.29), cervical herpes (OR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.21-2.99), lumbar herpes (OR = 1.29, 95% CI: 0.61-2.74), and immunosuppressive therapy (OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 0.22-17.12), were not significantly associated with PHN. In addition, glucocorticoid use (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.22-1.70) may be a protective factor for the development of PHN; however, the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: A series of baseline characteristics were identified among populations at high risk of developing PHN from HZ. Additionally, the timing of initial treatment is associated with PHN occurrence. The preventive effect of glucocorticoids warrants further validation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In late 2022, China became the first country to roll out mucosal COVID-19 vaccines. No prior study has yet compared the immunization stress-related responses (ISRR) among different routes of COVID-19 vaccine delivery. We aimed to compare the immunization-related psychological stress and ISRR between mucosal and intramuscular COVID-19 vaccines. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey using a biopsychosocial framework design was performed from January 11 to 20, 2023. Adults with COVID-19 vaccination were eligible for the study, and a total of 1073 adults participated with community-based sample. Primary outcomes were the psychological stress levels and prevalence of ISRR. Multivariate regression models were employed to compare these outcomes between the two vaccination groups. The potential mediating effects of stress on vaccination and ISRR were examined using bootstrap sampling method. To further ensure the robustness of our results, sensitivity analysis with propensity score matching was performed. FINDINGS: In the univariate analysis, participants who received mucosal vaccination reported significantly lower stress levels compared to those who received intramuscular vaccination (3.39 ± 3.02 vs. 3.93 ± 3.24, P = .006). The prevalence of overall ISRR was significantly lower in the mucosal group compared to the intramuscular group (38.4% vs. 47.9%, P = .002). Multivariate regression models revealed that participants who received mucosal vaccination had a significantly lower stress level (ß = -0.516, 95% CI: -0.852 to -0.180; P = .003) and 38.7% fewer overall ISRR (OR = 0.613, 95% CI: 0.427 to 0.881; P = .008), particularly in terms of neurological symptoms. The immunization-related stress mediated the association between vaccination type and ISRR, with indirect effects estimated at 0.0663 (95% CI: 0.0195 to 0.1346) for overall ISRR. CONCLUSIONS: Mucosal COVID-19 vaccination was associated with reduced psychological stress and physical responses, as compared to intramuscular vaccination, which may contribute to increased trust and compliance with routine or mass vaccination efforts in the future.
