RESUMEN

Herein, we demonstrate video-rate color three-dimensional (3D) volumetric displays using elemental-migration-assisted full-color-tunable upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). In the heavily doped NaErF4:Tm-based core@multishell UCNPs, erbium migration was observed. By tailoring this migration through adjustment of the intermediate shell thickness between the core and the sensitizer-doped second shell, red-green orthogonal upconversion luminescence (UCL) was achieved. Furthermore, highly efficient red-green-blue orthogonal UCL and full-color tunability were achieved in the UCNPs through a combination of elemental-migration-assisted color tuning and selective photon blocking. Finally, 3D volumetric displays were fabricated using a UCNP-polydimethylsiloxane composite. More specifically, 3D color images were created and motion pictures based on the expansion, rotation, and up/down movement of the displayed images were realized in the display matrix. Overall, our study provides new insights into upconversion color tuning and the achievement of motion pictures in the UCNP-polydimethylsiloxane composite is expected to accelerate the further development of solid-state full-color 3D volumetric displays.

RESUMEN

The ability to harness charges and spins for control of organic excitonic states is critical in developing high-performance organic luminophores and optoelectronic devices. Here we report a facile strategy to efficiently manipulate the electronic energy states of various organic phosphors by coupling them with inorganic lanthanide nanocrystals. We show that the metallic atoms exposed on the nanocrystal surface can introduce strong coupling effects to 9-(4-ethoxy-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole (OCzT) and some organic chromophores with carbazole functional groups when the organics are approaching the nanocrystals. This unconventional organic-inorganic hybridization enables a nearly 100 % conversion of the singlet excitation to fast charge transfer luminescence that does not exist in pristine organics, which broadens the utility of organic phosphors in hybrid systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The long-term effect of intraoperative usage of carbon nanoparticles (CN) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) test strip using immune colloidal gold technique (ICGT) is unclear. This study aims to compare the effect of intraoperative usage of CN and ICGT test strips on PG function. METHODS: This randomized clinical study involved adult patients who underwent total thyroidectomy. They were randomly allocated into three groups (control, CN, and ICGT group). Clinical data were analyzed. RESULTS: Each group involved 98 patients. Serum calcium and PTH concentrations at 24 h postoperatively (PTH24h) were higher in CN group. The parathyroid function recovered quicker in CN group. Use of CN increased in situ PG preservation and PTH24h. Mediation analysis indicated that 23.05% of the total effect of CN on PTH24h was attributed to PGRIS. CONCLUSION: CN holds promise to improve in situ PG preservation and protect PG vasculature, thereby reducing the incidence of early hypoparathyroidism. The value of ICGT test strips for PG protection is dubious.

RESUMEN

Adavosertib (ADA) is a WEE1 inhibitor that exhibits a synthetic lethal effect on p53-mutated gallbladder cancer (GBC). However, drug resistance due to DNA damage response compensation pathways and high toxicity limits further applications. Herein, estrone-targeted ADA-encapsulated metal-organic frameworks (ADA@MOF-EPL) for GBC synthetic lethal treatment by inducing conditional factors are developed. The high expression of estrogen receptors in GBC enables ADA@MOF-EPL to quickly enter and accumulate near the cell nucleus through estrone-mediated endocytosis and release ADA to inhibit WEE1 upon entering the acidic tumor microenvironment. Ultrasound irradiation induces ADA@MOF-EPL to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which leads to a further increase in DNA damage, resulting in a higher sensitivity of p53-mutated cancer cells to WEE1 inhibitor and promoting cell death via conditional synthetic lethality. The conditional factor induced by ADA@MOF-EPL further enhances the antitumor efficacy while significantly reducing systemic toxicity. Moreover, ADA@MOF-EPL demonstrates similar antitumor abilities in other p53-mutated solid tumors, revealing its potential as a broad-spectrum antitumor drug.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Routine prophylaxis for at-risk patients may reduce the occurrence of postoperative hypocalcemia but is not widely adopted due to a lack of evidence on the efficacy of available prophylactic strategies. In this study, we compared the relative efficacy of prophylactic strategies for postthyroidectomy hypocalcemia with a systematic review and network meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched, covering the period from 1980 to May 2022, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing calcium, vitamin D 3 , activated vitamin D 3 , teriparatide, steroids, and magnesium with placebo or each other in patients receiving total or completion thyroidectomy. Involved RCTs reporting symptomatic or biochemical hypocalcemia. The primary outcome was symptomatic hypocalcemia, defined as circumoral tingling, and Chvostek and Trousseau signs. The secondary outcome was biochemical hypocalcemia. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool for randomized trials. Pooled estimates were calculated using a random-effects inverse-variance weighting model. The network meta-analysis was performed under the frequentist framework. This meta-analysis was registered on the PROSPERO (International prospective register of systematic reviews) (CRD42022299982). RESULTS: Twenty-seven RCTs comprising 3382 patients are included. Prophylactic strategies of teriparatide, oral calcium plus vitamin D 3 , and oral calcium plus activated vitamin D 3 are superior to placebo in reducing symptomatic hypocalcemia. Teriparatide emerged as the most effective strategy for symptomatic hypocalcemia [relative risk (RR): 0.18; 95% CI: 0.03-0.98], followed by oral calcium plus activated vitamin D 3 (RR: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.25-0.73) and oral calcium plus vitamin D 3 (RR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.26-0.71). Evidence on monotherapy with either oral calcium or vitamin D 3 in reducing symptomatic hypocalcemia is insufficient. Intravenous calcium and oral calcium are effective in reducing biochemical hypocalcemia. CONCLUSIONS: This network meta-analysis provides information on the relative efficacy of current prophylactic strategies for postthyroidectomy hypocalcemia. Teriparatide performed better than other interventions and would seem appropriate for deployment among high-risk populations.

RESUMEN

Tissue-like cultured meats of some livestock have successfully been established by different approaches. However, the production of a structure similar to fish fillets is still challenging. Here, we develop tissue-like cultured fish fillets by assembly of large yellow croaker muscle fibers and adipocytes with 3D-printed gel. Inhibition of Tgf-ß and Notch signals significantly promoted myogenic differentiation of piscine satellite cells (PSCs). The mixture of fish gelatin and sodium alginate combined with a p53 inhibitor and a Yap activator supported PSC viability and proliferation. Based on the texture of fish muscle tissue, a 3D scaffold was constructed by gelatin-based gel mixed with PSCs. After proliferation and differentiation, the muscle scaffold was filled with cultured piscine adipocytes. Finally, tissue-like fish fillets with 20 × 12 × 4 mm were formed, consisting of 5.67 × 107 muscles and 4.02 × 107 adipocytes. The biomanufacture of tissue-like cultured fish fillet here could be a promising technology to customize meat production with high fidelity.

RESUMEN

Objective: Some cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy (CTL) presents no evidence of tuberculosis (TB), even after thorough examination of a fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimen. After the examination of excisional specimens, when the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis identifies the nucleic acid of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) or the culture results are positive, then the diagnosis of CTL is established. We refer to this condition as occult CTL (OCTL). Patient and Methods: The present work is a retrospective review of a consecutive series of OCTL cases that were treated at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, between June 2015 and September 2020. When the diagnosis of OCTL was established, the patients received the standard anti-TB chemotherapy. Results: Fourteen cases of OCTL, including 9 female and 5 male patients, aged 24 to 71 years (median age 42 years), were included in the present study. The most commonly observed levels of lymph node involvement were level V and level II. Each level of the involved lymph nodes was removed entirely through en bloc surgical resection. An evaluation of the excisional specimens led to positive PCR results in all 14 cases, with 2 cases presenting positive culture and 3 cases exhibiting positive acid-fast bacilli (AFB) staining. Recovery was uneventful, and the anti-TB chemotherapy was completed in all cases. The median duration of follow-up was 29 months, during which no case of TB relapse was observed. Conclusions: Wide surgical excision is crucial for the diagnosis and management of OCTL, and when used in combination with anti-TB chemotherapy, it results in satisfactory patient outcomes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of reconstruction of hypopharyngeal non-circumferential defects with a submental island flap after ablation of hypopharyngeal carcinoma. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of our study was to identify advantages and limitations of the submental flap for reconstruction of non-circumferential hypopharyngeal defects. METHODS: A total of 27 patients who had stage II-IV hypopharyngeal cancer and underwent pharyngeal reconstruction with a submental flap by the senior author in both Department of Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery, Chinese PLA General Hospital and Department of Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University. RESULTS: 96.3% (26/27) cases of submental island flap survived. There were two pharyngocutaneous fistulas, one recovered spontaneously, and the other was associated with flap necrosis, underwent neck debridement and flap removal. All except for one patient had decannulation of their nasogastric tube 2 weeks postoperatively. There was no evidence of a stricture or stenosis of the laryngopharynx, nor any sign of aspiration, except for one with esophageal inlet stricture caused by radiotherapy. There were two cases of obvious paraesthesia pharynges due to beard growth at the submental flap after reconstruction. 63.0% (17/27) patients are alive and 37% (10/27) have died of disease. The 3-year survival rate is 56.3% and the 5-year survival rate is 50.0%. CONCLUSION: The submental flap reconstruction for moderately sized non-circumferential hypopharyngeal defects is a recommended treatment option.

RESUMEN

All-inorganic CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) nanocrystals (NCs) are emerging as attractive semiconductor materials because of their outstanding optical properties. The low resistance of CsPbX3 NCs to light, heat, oxygen, and water has been recognized as a major obstacle to their practical applications. Here, we demonstrate that the stability of CsPbX3 NC films can be dramatically enhanced by Ar plasma treatment. It is revealed that plasma irradiation can induce ligand polymerization in the NC films if the ligands contain unsaturated carbon bonds. The ligand polymerization leads to encapsulation of the NCs in the ligand polymers. Because of the precise localization of the in situ ligand polymerization under plasma irradiation and the high NC content in the films without extra additives, the polymerized area can be precisely defined down to several micrometers. This enables easy fabrication of high-resolution NC pixels for next generation displays.

RESUMEN

Darier's disease (DD) is an autosomal dominant skin disorder that is characterized by multiple keratotic papules, focal loss of adhesion and abnormal keratinization. Mutations in the ATP2A2 gene encoding sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium pumping ATPase type 2 have been identified as the molecular basis of DD. We report here a three-generation family with DD, and examined ATP2A2 gene mutations in this family by direct sequencing. A novel missense mutation A-->G was identified in exon 12, nucleotide 1704, which leads to the substitution of lysine by arginine at codon 514 (K514R). This study contributes to the database on ATP2A2 in DD, and further illustrates the extensive diversity of mutational events that lead to the different phenotypes of DD.
