RESUMEN

Alternative treatment for recurrent labial infection by herpes simplex virus (HSV) have been considered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of laser phototherapy in prevention and reduction of severity of labial manifestations of herpes labialis virus. Seventy-one patients, divided into experimental (n = 41) and control (n = 30) groups were followed up for 16 months. Patients in the control group were treated topically with aciclovir and patients in the experimental group were subjected to laser phototherapy (one session per week, 10 weeks): 780 nm, 60 mW, 3.0 J/cm(2) or 4.5 J/cm(2) on healthy (no HSV-1 infection) and affected (with HSV-1 infection) tissues. Patients in the experimental group presented a significant decrease in dimension of herpes labialis lesions (P = 0.013) and inflammatory edema (P = 0.031). The reduction in pain level (P = 0.051) and monthly recurrences (P = 0.076) did not reach statistical significance. This study represents an in vivo indication that this treatment should be further considered as an effective alternative to therapeutic regimens for herpes labialis lesions.

An immunoperoxidase technique was used to compare the number of CD1a+ and factor XIIIa+ dendritic cells (DCs), and CD68+ Macrophages (M) in 30 gingival samples from subjects with clinically healthy periodontitium (HP) and 10 samples from subjects with drug-induced gingival enlargement (DIGE). Fewer CD1a+ and factor XIIIa+ DCs were found in areas with inflammatory infiltration (II) of the lamina propria (LP) in the group with immunosuppressed DIGE (IDIGE) compared to the group with HP. In the sulcular and junctional/pocket epithelia, the number of CD1a+ DCs was decreased in the group with IDIGE (p<0.05). There was a tendency toward a reduced number of CD1a+ DCs and CD68+ M in areas without inflammatory infiltrate of the LP in the group with IDIGE. The alterations in the number of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) may be the reason for the decreased periodontal inflammation and breakdown clinically observed in subjects who are immunosuppressed.

UNLABELLED: Some oral cancers are known to develop from dysplastic oral epithelium. In the present study, the expression of c-Jun, c-Fos, and cyclin D1 proteins in oral epithelial lesions with different degrees of dysplasia, and in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) was evaluated. Eighteen cases of mild dysplasia, 23 cases of moderate to severe dysplasia and 24 OSCCs were studied immunohistochemically. Additionally, 15 sections of oral mucosa without any evidence of dysplasia were included in the study. RESULTS: c-Jun expression increased according to the degree of oral dysplasia, with the greatest expression found in OSCC. c-Fos expression was intense in normal mucosa, reduced in mild dysplasia and high in moderate to severe dysplasia and in OSCCs. Cyclin D1 was expressed in only a few cases of moderate to severe dysplasia and in most of the OSCCs. Statistical analysis showed a correlation between the three proteins and the degree of epithelial alteration. The present results indicate a possible role of c-Jun and c-Fos in malignant transformation of oral mucosa.

RESUMEN

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by a short neck, a low posterior hairline, and limited head movement. Occasionally, patients with KFS may also show signs of deafness, intellectual disability, cardiac malformation, palpebral ptosis, facial nerve paralysis, cleft palate, and scoliosis. Although some researchers have documented this syndrome, scant attention has been paid to craniomaxillofacial manifestations and dental treatment of patients with KFS. The objective of this case report was to describe the planning and execution of dental treatment for a 10-year-old male patient with KFS.

Histopathological findings in cases of hairy leukoplakia (HL) are not exclusive to this lesion. A total of 36 tissue samples from patients previously diagnosed with HL based solely on morphological aspects were used in this study. Our purpose was to confirm the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in these tissue samples by in situ hybridization (ISH), and to compare the detection of EBV with specific histopathological findings observed in each case. Among the 36 specimens, 80.55% were EBV positive, confirming the previous clinical and histhophatological diagnosis. None of the histopathological findings analyzed correlated with the presence or absence of EBV. This shows that a definitive diagnosis of HL cannot be established based on histopathological findings alone. Because there are many important implications on the establishment of definitive diagnosis of HL, the detection of EBV by ISH is obligatory.
