BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To explore male-female differences in aneurysm growth and clinical outcomes in a two-centre retrospective Dutch cohort study of adult patients with ascending aortic aneurysm (AscAA). METHODS: Adult patients in whom imaging of an AscAA (root and/or ascending: ≥40â mm) was performed between 2007 and 2022 were included. Aneurysm growth was analysed using repeated measurements at the sinuses of Valsalva (SoV) and tubular ascending aorta. Male-female differences were explored in presentation, aneurysm characteristics, treatment strategy, survival, and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: One thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight patients were included (31.6% female). Median age at diagnosis was 65.4 years (interquartile range: 53.4-71.7) for females and 59.0 years (interquartile range: 49.3-68.0) for males (P < .001). At diagnosis, females more often had tubular ascending aortic involvement (75.5% vs. 70.2%; P = .030) while males more often had SoV involvement (42.8% vs. 21.6%; P < .001). Maximum absolute aortic diameter, at any location, at diagnosis did not differ between females (45.0â mm) and males (46.5â mm; P = .388). In females, tubular ascending growth was faster (P < .001), whereas in males, SoV growth was faster (P = .005), corrected for covariates. Unadjusted 10-year survival was 72.5% [95% confidence interval (CI) 67.8%-77.6%] for females and 78.3% (95% CI 75.3%-81.3%) for males (P = .010). Twenty-three type A dissections occurred, with an incidence rate of 8.2/1000 patient-years (95% CI 4.4-14.1) in females and 2.4/1000 patient-years (95% CI 1.2-4.5) in males [incidence rate ratio females/males: 3.4 (95% CI 1.5-8.0; P = .004)]. CONCLUSIONS: In patients having entered a diagnostic programme, involvement of aortic segments and age- and segment-related growth patterns differ between women and men with AscAA, particularly at an older age. Unravelling of these intertwined observations will provide a deeper understanding of AscAA progression and outcome in women and men and can be used as an evidence base for patient-tailored clinical guideline development.

Animal social and spatial behaviours are inextricably linked. Animal movements are driven by environmental factors and social interactions. Habitat structure and changing patterns of animal space use can also shape social interactions. Animals adjust their social and spatial behaviours to reduce the risk of offspring mortality. In territorial infanticidal species, two strategies are possible for males: they can stay close to offspring to protect them against rivals (infant-defence hypothesis) or patrol the territory more intensively to prevent rival intrusions (territorial-defence hypothesis). Here, we tested these hypotheses in African lions (Panthera leo) by investigating how males and females adjust their social and spatial behaviours in the presence of offspring. We combined datasets on the demography and movement of lions, collected between 2002 and 2016 in Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe), to document the presence of cubs (field observations) and the simultaneous movements of groupmates and competitors (GPS tracking). We showed a spatial response of lions to the presence of offspring, with females with cubs less likely to select areas close to waterholes or in the periphery of the territory than females without cubs. In contrast, these areas were more selected by males when there were cubs in the pride. We also found social responses. Males spent more time with females as habitat openness increased but the presence of cubs in the pride did not influence the average likelihood of observing males with females. Furthermore, rival males relocated further after an encounter with pride males when cubs were present in the prides, suggesting that the presence of cubs leads to a more vigorous repulsion of competitors. Males with cubs in their pride were more likely to interact with male competitors on the edge of the pride's home range and far from the waterholes, suggesting that they are particularly assiduous in detecting and repelling rival males during these periods. In general, the strategies to avoid infanticide exhibited by male lions supported the territorial-defence hypothesis. Our study contributes to answer the recent call for a behavioural ecology at the spatial-social interface.

Schistosomiasis is a major cause of morbidity in the world and almost 800 million people worldwide are at risk for schistosomiasis; it is second only to malaria as a major infectious disease. Globally, it is estimated that the disease affects more than 250 million people in 78 countries of the world and is responsible for some 280,000-500,000 deaths each year. The three major schistosomes infecting humans are Schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum, and S. haematobium. This chapter covers a wide range of aspects of schistosomiasis, including basic biology of the parasites, epidemiology, immunopathology, treatment, control, vaccines, and genomics/proteomics. In this chapter, the reader will understand the significant toll this disease takes in terms of mortality and morbidity. A description of the various life stages of schistosomes is presented, which will be informative for both those unfamiliar with the disease and experienced scientists. Clinical and public health aspects are addressed that cover acute and chronic disease, diagnosis, current treatment regimens and alternative drugs, and schistosomiasis control programs. A brief overview of genomics and proteomics is included that details recent advances in the field that will help scientists investigate the molecular biology of schistosomes. The reader will take away an appreciation for general aspects of schistosomiasis and the current research advances.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore male-female differences in suicide ideation (SI) and suicide risk factors in major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We analysed 482 adults (sample 1) and 438 elderly outpatients (sample 2) with MDD. Sample 1 was treated with different antidepressant combinations (escitalopram; bupropion plus escitalopram; venlafaxine plus mirtazapine) and assessed by means of the Concise Health Risk Tracking (SI), Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology, Altman Mania Rating Scale and Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire. Sample 2 was treated with venlafaxine and assessed using the Hamilton scale for depression, Anxiety Sensitivity Index and Penn State Worry Questionnaire for anxiety, Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation and Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. RESULTS: In sample 1, females had greater depression severity (O.R 0.961 99%CI: 0.929 - 0.995), males reported more alcohol abuse (O.R 1.299 99%CI: 1.118 - 1.509) and active SI (O.R 1.109 99%CI: 1.005 - 1.255). In sample 2 men showed more severe SI (O.R 1.067; 99%CI: 1.014 - 1.122) and weight loss (OR = 5.89 99%CI: 1.01 - 34.19), women more gastrointestinal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: In these selected samples, although women had more severe depression, men had more suicide risk factors. Such differences might contribute to men's increased suicide risk.
In major depressive disorder sex differences affect the clinical expression of depressive episodes. In comparison to men, women endorse higher levels of overall depression in adult MDD and more somatic anxiety and gastrointestinal symptoms in late-life MDD.After controlling for confounding variables, males have more severe SI and a larger number of suicide risk factors (eg. alcohol abuse; weight loss). The association between male sex and SI is detectable in both adults and elderly patients with MDD.Further studies are necessary to elucidate how sex differences in suicide ideation and suicide risk factors are related to men's increased suicide risk.

PURPOSE: Graded exercise tests (GXTs) are commonly used to determine the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) of firefighter applicants. However, the criteria used to confirm VO2max are inconsistent and have a high inter-subject variability, which can compromise the reliability of the results. To address this, a verification phase (VP) after the GXT has been proposed as a "gold standard" protocol for measuring VO2max. METHODS: 4179 male and 283 female firefighter applicants completed a GXT and a VP to measure their VO2max. VO2peak values measured during the GXT were compared to the VO2 values measured during the VP. The proportion of participants who met the job-related aerobic fitness standard during the GXT was compared to that of those who met the required standard during the VP. RESULTS: For male and female participants that required the VP to attain their VO2max, the VO2peak values measured during the GXT (47.3 ± 6.0 and 41.6 ± 5.3 mL kg-1 min-1) were, respectively, 10.1% and 10.3% lower than the VO2 values measured during the VP (52.1 ± 6.7 and 45.9 ± 6.4 mL kg-1 min-1), p < 0.001. Furthermore, the proportion of male and female participants who met the job-related aerobic fitness standard significantly increased from the GXT to the VP by 11.6% and 29.9%, respectively, p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: These results strongly support the use of a VP to confirm VO2max, especially for females, older and overweight individuals. These findings are applicable to other physically demanding public safety occupations and when examining the efficacy of training interventions on VO2max.

AbstractSpecies with environmental sex determination (ESD) have persisted through deep time, despite massive environmental perturbation in the geological record. Understanding how species with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), a type of ESD, persist through climate change is particularly timely given the current climate crisis, as highly biased sex ratios and extinction are predicted. Since 1982, we have studied primary sex ratios of a reptile with TSD (Chelydra serpentina). Primary sex ratios remained unchanged over time, despite warming in the environment. Resilience of the primary sex ratio occurred via a portfolio effect, realized through remarkable intra-annual variation in nest-level sex ratios, leading to a relatively consistent mean annual sex ratio. Intra-annual variation in nest-level sex ratios was related to variation in egg burial depth coupled with large clutch sizes, creating thermal gradients in the nest and promoting mixed-sex clutches. Furthermore, both locally and globally, sustained increases in nighttime air temperature contribute more to warming than increases in daily maximum temperature, but development rate was affected more strongly by maximum daily air temperature, conferring additional resilience to overall warming. Our study suggests that some TSD species may be resilient to warming and provides an example of how ESD may persist under environmental change.

Young men with few prospects of attracting a mate have historically threatened the internal peace and stability of societies. In some contemporary societies, such involuntary celibate-or incel-men promote much online misogyny and perpetrate real-world violence. We tested the prediction that online incel activity arises via local real-world mating-market forces that affect relationship formation. From a database of 4 billion Twitter posts (2012-2018), we geolocated 321 million tweets to 582 commuting zones in the continental United States, of which 3,649 tweets used words peculiar to incels and 3,745 were about incels. We show that such tweets arise disproportionately within places where mating competition among men is likely to be high because of male-biased sex ratios, few single women, high income inequality, and small gender gaps in income. Our results suggest a role for social media in monitoring and mitigating factors that lead young men toward antisocial behavior in real-world societies.

OBJECTVIES: This study is aimed at establishing reference intervals (RIs) of 40 chemistry and immunochemistry analytes for Ghanaian adults based on internationally harmonized protocol by IFCC Committee on Reference Intervals and Decision Limits (C-RIDL). METHODS: A total of 501 healthy volunteers aged ≥18 years were recruited from the northern and southern regions of Ghana. Blood samples were analyzed with Beckman-Coulter AU480 and Centaur-XP/Siemen auto-analyzers. Sources of variations of reference values (RVs) were evaluated by multiple regression analysis (MRA). The need for partitioning RVs by sex and age was guided by the SD ratio (SDR). The RI for each analyte was derived using parametric method with application of the latent abnormal values exclusion (LAVE) method. RESULTS: Using SDR≥0.4 as threshold, RVs were partitioned by sex for most enzymes, creatinine, uric acid (UA), bilirubin, immunoglobulin-M. MRA revealed age and body mass index (BMI) as major source of variations of many analytes. LAVE lowered the upper limits of RIs for alanine/aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transaminase and lipids. Exclusion of individuals with BMI≥30 further lowered the RIs for lipids and CRP. After standardization based on value-assigned serum panel provided by C-RIDL, Ghanaian RIs were found higher for creatine kinase, amylase, and lower for albumin and urea compared to other collaborating countries. CONCLUSIONS: The LAVE effect on many clinical chemistry RIs supports the need for the secondary exclusion for reliable derivation of RIs. The differences in Ghanaian RIs compared to other countries underscore the importance of country specific-RIs for improved clinical decision making.

PURPOSE: Vitamin B3 provides nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), an essential coenzyme in oxidoreductase reactions. Severe vitamin B3 deficiency leads to the disease Pellagra, while mild vitamin B3 deficiency has been linked to age-related and metabolic diseases. Mild vitamin B3 deficiency is understudied, especially in females. Therefore, we examined how female mice responded to a diet that induced mild vitamin B3 deficiency in male mice. METHODS: Female C57BL/6RccHsd mice were subjected for 18 weeks to a diet without vitamin B3 and low but sufficient tryptophan (0.115%) (0NR) and were compared to control female mice on the same diet with the reference dose of vitamin B3 (30NR, 30 mg nicotinamide riboside/ kg diet). RESULTS: In the female mice, no differences between the two dietary groups were found in liver nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) levels, body composition, whole body energy and substrate metabolism measured by indirect calorimetry, or liver triacylglycerol metabolism. Expression of seven genes that previously were shown to respond to mild vitamin B3 deficiency in male white adipose tissue were not differentially expressed between the female dietary groups, neither was insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSION: We concluded that the female 0NR mice were not vitamin B3 deficient; the role of age, sex and health status is discussed. Demonstrated by clear differences between females and males, the latter showing mild deficiency under the same conditions, this study highlights the importance of studying both sexes.

BACKGROUND: Previous observational studies have shown similarities in cardiometabolic risk factors between spouses. It is still possible that this result reflects the age similarity of spouses rather than environmental factors of spouses (e.g. cohabitation effect). To clarify the importance of mate cardiometabolic risk factors for similarity of environmental factors, it is necessary to examine whether they are observed in random male-female pairs while maintaining the age of the spousal pairs. This study aimed to determine whether the similarities found between spousal pairs for cardiometabolic risks were also observed between random male-female pairs. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 5,391 spouse pairs from Japan; data were obtained from a large biobank study. For pairings, women of the same age were randomly shuffled to create new male-female pairs of the same age as that of the original spouse pairs. Similarities in cardiometabolic risk factors between the random male-female pairs were analysed using Pearson's correlation or age-adjusted logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The mean ages of the men and women were 63.2 and 60.4 years, respectively. Almost all cardiometabolic risk factors similarities were not noted in cardiometabolic risk factors, including the continuous risk factors (anthropometric traits, blood pressure, glycated haemoglobin level, and lipid traits); lifestyle habits (smoking, drinking, and physical activity); or diseases (hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome) between the random male-female pairs. The age-adjusted correlation coefficients ranged from - 0.007 for body mass index to 0.071 for total cholesterol. The age-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for current drinkers was 0.94 (0.81 - 1.09); hypertension, 1.07 (0.93 - 1.23); and type 2 diabetes mellitus, 1.08 (0.77 - 1.50). CONCLUSION: In this study, few similarities in cardiometabolic risk factors were noted among the random male-female pairs. As spouse pairs may share environmental factors, intervention strategies targeting lifestyle habits and preventing lifestyle-related diseases may be effective.

Adverse early life experiences are associated with an enhanced risk for mental and physical health problems, including substance abuse. Despite clinical evidence, the mechanisms underlying these relationships are not fully understood. Maternal separation (MS) is a commonly used animal model of early neglect. The aim of the current study is to determine whether the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)/glycine sites are involved in vulnerability to alcohol consumption (two-bottle choice paradigm) and reversal learning deficits (Barnes maze task) in adolescent rats subjected to the MS procedure and whether these effects are sex dependent. By using ELISA, we evaluated MS-induced changes in the NMDAR subunits (GluN1, GluN2A, GluN2B) expression, especially in the glycine-binding subunit, GluN1, in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and ventral striatum (vSTR) of male/female rats. Next, we investigated whether Org 24598, a glycine transporter 1 (GlyT1) inhibitor, was able to modify ethanol drinking in adolescent and adult male/female rats with prior MS experience and reversal learning in the Barnes maze task. Our findings revealed that adolescent MS female rats consumed more alcohol which may be associated with a substantial increase in GluN1 subunit of NMDAR in the PFC and vSTR. Org 24598 decreased ethanol intake in both sexes with a more pronounced decrease in ethanol consumption in adolescent female rats. Furthermore, MS showed deficits in reversal learning in both sexes. Org 24598 ameliorated reversal learning deficits, and this effect was reversed by the NMDAR/glycine site inhibitor, L-701,324. Collectively, our results suggest that NMDAR/glycine sites might be targeted in the treatment of alcohol abuse in adolescents with early MS, especially females.

BACKGROUND: Fertilization in flowering plants depends on the early contact and acceptance of pollen grains by the receptive papilla cells of the stigma. Deciphering the specific transcriptomic response of both pollen and stigmatic cells during their interaction constitutes an important challenge to better our understanding of this cell recognition event. RESULTS: Here we describe a transcriptomic analysis based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) present in two Arabidopsis thaliana accessions, one used as female and the other as male. This strategy allowed us to distinguish 80% of transcripts according to their parental origins. We also developed a tool which predicts male/female specific expression for genes without SNP. We report an unanticipated transcriptional activity triggered in stigma upon incompatible pollination and show that following compatible interaction, components of the pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) pathway are induced on the female side. CONCLUSIONS: Our work unveils the molecular signatures of compatible and incompatible pollinations both at the male and female side. We provide invaluable resource and tools to identify potential new molecular players involved in pollen-stigma interaction.

BACKGROUND: In Russia, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality is high and the mortality gap between men and women is large. Conventional risk factors cannot explain these phenomena. Ventricular arrhythmia (VA) is an important contributor to the death toll in community-based populations. The study examines the prevalence and the mortality impacts of VA in men and women and the role of VA in the male mortality excess at older ages. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data from the Stress, Aging, and Health in Russia (SAHR) study that was fielded in 2007-9 in Moscow (1800 individuals, mean age 68.8 years), with mean mortality follow-up of 7.4 years (416 deaths, 248 CVD deaths). Indicators reflecting the frequency and the complexity of VA were derived from 24-h ambulatory ECG recordings. Other covariates were: socio-demographic characteristics, conventional risk factors, markers of inflammation, reported myocardial infarction, and stroke. The impacts of VA and other variables on CVD and all-cause mortality among men and women were estimated with the proportional hazard models. We assessed the contributions of VAs to the male-female mortality gap using hazard models that do and do not include groups of the predictors. Logistic models were used to assess the associations between VA and other biomarkers. RESULTS: VAs were about twice as prevalent among men as among women. In both sexes, they were significantly associated with CVD and all-cause mortality independently of conventional risk factors. The highest hazard ratios (HRs) for CVD death were found for the runs of ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) HR = 2.45, 95% CI 1.63-3.68 for men and 2.75, 95% CI 1.18-6.40 for women. The mortality impacts of the polymorphic VPCs were significant among men only (HR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.08-2.07). VA indicators can potentially explain 12.3% and 9.1% of the male-female gaps in mortality from CVD and all causes, respectively. VAs were associated with ECG-registered ischemic problems and reported MI, particularly among men. CONCLUSIONS: VA indicators predicted mortality in older Muscovites independently of other risk factors, and have the potential to explain a non-trivial share of the excess male mortality. The latter may be related to more severe coronary problems in men compared to women.

OBJECTIVE: To explore inherent associations between psychological distress and resilience, and its effect on quality of life among medical and non-medical students. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2018 to January 2020 after approval from the Department of Psychology Ethics Committee of the International Islamic University, Islamabad, and comprised medical and non-medical students of either gender enrolled with different institutions of higher learning in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Data were obtained using Brief Resilience Scale, Kessler Psychological Distress Scale and Quality of Life Scale. Data was analysed using SPSS. RESULTS: Of the 300 subjects, 150(50%) each were medical and non medical students. Within both groups, 75(50%) each were males and females. Psychological resilience was a positive predictor of quality of life ( =0.30) whereas psychological distress served as a negative predictor of quality of life ( =-0.54). Medical students were significantly higher on psychological distress (p=0.001), whereas non-medical students were higher on quality of life (p=0.001) and resilience (p=0.001). Female students were higher on quality of life and male students were higher on psychological distress (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Resilience needs to be promoted among students, particularly medical students, as it may help in reduction and adequate management of academic distress levels.

BACKGROUND: Early changes in acid/base and electrolyte concentrations could provide insights into the development of neuropathology at the onset of stroke. We evaluated associations between acid/base and electrolyte concentrations, and outcomes in permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) model. METHODS: 18-month-old male and female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent pMCAO. Pre-, post- (7 min after occlusion), and at 72 hr of pMCAO venous blood samples provided pH, carbon dioxide, oxygen, glucose, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and electrolyte values of ionized calcium, potassium, and sodium. Multiple linear regression determined predictors of infarct and edema volumes from these values, Kaplan-Meier curve analyzed morality between males and females at 72 hr, and a Cox regression model was used to determine predictors for mortality. RESULTS: Analysis indicated significant differences in acid/base balance and electrolyte levels in aged rats not dependent on sex between the three time points in the pMCAO model. Changes in pH (from pre- to post and post- to 72 hr) and changes in sodium and ionized calcium (from post- to 72 hr) were predictors of infarct volume and edema volume, respectively. Cox Regression revealed there is a 3.25 times increased risk for mortality based on changes in bicarbonate (pre- to post-MCAO). CONCLUSIONS: These early venous blood changes in acid/base balance and electrolytes can be used to predict stroke outcomes in our rat model of stroke. This study provides potential biomarkers to be examined in the human condition that could provide profound prognostic tools for stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: The study aims at identifying long-term trends and patterns of current smoking by age, gender, and education in Russia, including the most recent period from 2008 during which tobacco control policies were implemented, and to estimate the impact on mortality of any reductions in prevalence. We present an in-depth analysis based on an unprecedentedly large array of survey data. METHODS: We examined pooled micro-data on smoking from 17 rounds of the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Study of 1996-2016, 11 other surveys conducted in Russia in 1975-2017, and two comparator surveys from England and the USA. Standardization by age and education, regression and meta-analysis were used to estimate trends in the prevalence of current smoking by gender, age, and educational patterns. RESULTS: From the mid-1970s to the mid-2000s smoking prevalence among men was relatively stable at around 60%, after which time prevalence declined in every age and educational group. Among women, trends in smoking were more heterogeneous. Prevalence more than doubled above the age of 55 years from very low levels (< 5%). At younger ages, there were steep increases until the mid-2000s after which prevalence has declined. Trends differed by educational level, with women in the lowest educational category accounting for most of the long-term increase. We estimate that the decline in male smoking may have contributed 6.2% of the observed reduction in cardiovascular deaths among men in the period 2008-16. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of an effective tobacco control strategy in Russia starting in 2008 coincided with a decline in smoking prevalence among men from what had been stable, high levels over many decades regardless of age and education. Among women, the declines have been more uneven, with young women showing recent downturns, while the smoking prevalence in middle age has increased, particularly among those with minimal education. Among men, these positive changes will have made a small contribution to the reduction in mortality seen in Russia since 2005.

In flowering plants, the interaction of pollen tubes with female tissues is important for the accomplishment of double fertilization. Little information is known about the mechanisms that underlie signalling between pollen tubes and female tissues. In this study, two Arabidopsis pollen tube-expressed CrRLK1L protein kinases, Buddha's Paper Seal 1 (BUPS1) and BUPS2, were identified as being required for normal tip growth of pollen tubes in the pistil. They are expressed prolifically in pollen and pollen tubes and are localized on the plasma membrane of the pollen tube tip region. Mutations in BUPS1 drastically reduced seed set. Most of the bups1 mutant pollen tubes growing in the pistil exhibited a swollen pollen tube tip, leading to failure of fertilization. The bups2 pollen tubes had a slightly abnormal morphology but could still accomplish double fertilization. The bups1 bups2 double mutant exhibited a slightly enhanced phenotype compared to the single bups1 mutants. The BUPS1 proteins could form homomers and heteromers with BUPS2, whereas BUPS2 could only form heteromers with BUPS1. The BUPS proteins could interact with the Arabidopsis pollen-expressed RopGEFs in the yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assays. The results indicated that the BUPSs may mediate normal polar growth of pollen tubes in the pistil.

Deliveries from Indian and Chinese mothers present a higher than expected male:female ratio in their own countries, in northern Europe, EEUU and Canada. No studies have been carried out in southern European countries. We explored whether the high male-to-female ratio common in Indian and Chinese communities, also exists among families from those regions who live in Spain. For that purpose we designed a cross-sectional population-based study containing data on 3,133,908 singleton live births registered in the Spanish Vital Statistics Registry during the period 2007-2015. The ratio of male:female births by area of origin was calculated using binary intercept-only logistic regression models without reference category for the whole sample of births and taking into account a possible effect modification of birth order and sex of the previous males. Interaction effects of sociodemographic mothers' and fathers' characteristics was also assesed. In Spain, the ratio male:female is higher than expected for Indian-born mothers, especially for deliveries from mothers with no previous male births and, to a lesser extent, for Chinese-born women, specifically for third or higher order births and slightly influenced by the sex of the previous births. Therefore, the increased sex male:female ratio observed in other countries among Indian and Chinese mothers is also observed in Spain. This reinforces the notion that culture and values of the country of origin are more influential than the country of residence.

Grooming in primates is often considered a "currency" that can be exchanged for other "services" or "commodities" such as reciprocal grooming, coalitionary support, infant handling, tolerance around food sources, active food sharing, or mating opportunities. Previous studies on primate grooming-for-sex exchange viewed the males as the demanding class, with the females as suppliers of mating opportunities. In this study, we examine the broader context of grooming-for-mating exchange in Barbary macaques in Gibraltar. Our data show that Barbary macaque males groom females with whom they are mating more frequently and for longer periods than other females, and the relationship between grooming and mating remains significant in both sexual and nonsexual contexts. In addition, females groomed males with whom they were mating more frequently and for longer periods than other males. In both sexes, grooming was observed to be far more frequent and to occur for longer durations in sexual compared to nonsexual contexts. We did not find any difference in grooming behavior between presexual and postsexual contexts. Our data suggest that there is no simple model to describe Barbary macaque grooming patterns in sexual contexts. Although our results are partly consistent with male use of grooming as payment for mating, broadly assessed grooming-mating patterns cannot be solely explained by a male-driven grooming-for-mating exchange.

Schistosomiasis is a major cause of morbidity in the world; it is second only to malaria as a major infectious disease. Globally, it is estimated that the disease affects over 250 million people in 78 countries of the world and is responsible for some 280,000 deaths each year. The three major schistosomes infecting humans are Schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum, and S. haematobium. This chapter covers a wide range of aspects of schistosomiasis, including basic biology of the parasites, epidemiology, immunopathology, treatment, control, vaccines, and genomics/proteomics. In this chapter, the reader will understand the significant toll this disease takes in terms of mortality and morbidity. A description of the various life stages of schistosomes is presented, which will be informative for both those unfamiliar with the disease and experienced scientists. Clinical and public health aspects are addressed that cover acute and chronic disease, diagnosis, current treatment regimens and alternative drugs, and schistosomiasis control programs. A brief overview of genomics and proteomics is included that details recent advances in the field that will help scientists investigate the molecular biology of schistosomes. The reader will take away an appreciation for general aspects of schistosomiasis and research advances.
