In a previous study, our group detected the cholecystokinin (CCK) protein in the porcine oviduct. This fact, together with the involvement of CCK in the regulation of sperm protein tyrosine phosphorylation by the modulation of HCO3 - uptake (in mice and humans) suggests a role for CCK during sperm capacitation. Therefore, on the one hand, the expression of CCK receptors (CCK1R and CCK2R) on boar testes has been investigated and probed; on the other hand, boar spermatozoa (from seminal doses of 1-day and 5-day storage) were exposed to different concentrations of CCK (0-control, 25 or 50 µM) in a medium supporting capacitation supplemented with 0, 5 or 25 mmol/L of HCO3 - for 1 h at 38.5°C. Sperm motion (total and progressive motility), kinetic parameters, viability, acrosome status, and mitochondrial activity were determined. No differences between groups (0, 25 or 50 µM of CCK) were observed when HCO3 - was absent in the media (p > .05). However, the results showed that when the media was supplemented with 5 mmol/L HCO3 - in 1-day seminal dose storage, the linearity index (LIN, %), straightness index (STR, %) and oscillation index (WOB, %) (sperm kinetics parameters) increased in the presence of CCK regardless the concentration (p < .05). Nevertheless, CCK in sperm from 5-day storage only increased the WOB parameter in comparison to the control (p < .05). Furthermore, the average amplitude of the lateral displacement of the sperm head (ALH, µm) and curvilinear velocity (VCL, µm/s) decreased when CCK was present, depending on its concentration and sperm aging (1-day vs. 5-days) (p < .05). In the case of the media supporting capacitation supplemented with 25 mmol/L HCO3 - , any differences were observed except for sperm viability in the 5-day seminal doses, which increased in the 50 µM-CCK group compared to the control (p < .05). In conclusion, these data suggest an implication of CCK protein during sperm capacitation under low bicarbonate concentration increasing the sperm linear trajectory.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the ability of first-trimester combined screening for pre-eclampsia (PE) to predict early-onset and preterm PE when pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and placental growth factor (PlGF) were assessed before vs after 11 weeks' gestation. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies undergoing routine first-trimester screening conducted at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, between October 2015 and September 2017. Demographic characteristics, obstetric history, maternal history and biophysical markers (mean uterine artery pulsatility index and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP)) were recorded at the first-trimester scan (at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks' gestation). Maternal serum concentrations of PAPP-A and PlGF were assessed from the routine first-trimester blood test (at 8 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks). Women were classified into two groups depending on whether serum biomarkers were assessed at 8 + 0 to 10 + 6 weeks or at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks. Probability scores for early-onset and preterm PE were calculated by using two different algorithms: the multivariate Gaussian-distribution model and The Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) competing-risks model. Receiver-operating-characteristics (ROC) curves were produced and detection rates at fixed 5% and 10% false-positive rates were computed to compare the performance of these algorithms when PAPP-A and PlGF were assessed before vs after 11 weeks. RESULTS: Of the 2641 women included, serum biomarkers were assessed before 11 weeks in 1675 (63.4%) and at or after 11 weeks in 966 (36.6%). Of these, 90 (3.4%) women developed PE, including 11 (0.4%) cases of early-onset PE and 30 (1.1%) of preterm PE. Five (45.5%) cases of early-onset and 16 (53.3%) of preterm PE were identified in the group in which serum biomarkers were assessed at 8 + 0 to 10 + 6 weeks and six (54.5%) cases of early-onset and 14 (46.7%) of preterm PE in the group in which serum biomarkers were assessed at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks. In the prediction of early-onset and preterm PE using the Gaussian algorithm, no differences were observed between the areas under the ROC curves (AUCs) when PAPP-A and PlGF were measured before or after 11 weeks. In the prediction of early-onset and preterm PE using the FMF algorithm, no differences were observed between AUCs for any of the combinations used for risk calculation when the serum biomarkers were obtained before vs after 11 weeks, except for the combination of PAPP-A and MAP, which showed a greater AUC for the prediction of early-onset PE when PAPP-A was measured at or after 11 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The prediction of early-onset and preterm PE is similar when serum biomarkers are measured before or after 11 weeks. This allows the use of a two-step approach for PE risk assessment that permits immediate risk calculation at the time of the first-trimester scan. © 2020 The Authors. The consumption of quinolones as first-line treatment has increased in recent years, leading to an increase in the incidence of hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) to this antibiotic group. Both diagnosis and management of HSRs to quinolones are complex and controversial. These practical guidelines aim to provide recommendations for effective clinical practice. The recommendations were drafted by an expert panel that reviewed the literature regarding HSRs to quinolones and analyzed controversies in this area. Most HSRs to quinolones are immediate and severe. The risk for HSRs is higher in patients who report allergy to ß-lactams, moxifloxacininduced anaphylaxis, and immediate reactions than in patients who report reactions to quinolones inducing other symptoms. The usefulness of skin tests in diagnosing HSRs to quinolones is controversial, with sensitivity and specificity varying between studies. Most in vitro tests are produced in-house, with no validated commercial options. The basophil activation test has proven useful for diagnosing immediate reactions, albeit with diverse results regarding sensitivity. Drug provocation testing is currently the gold standard for confirming or excluding the diagnosis and for finding safe alternatives, although it is contraindicated in patients with severe reactions. Cross-reactivity between quinolones has proven controversial in several studies, with the lowest cross-reactivity reported for levofloxacin. Desensitization may be considered in allergy to quinolones when no other alternatives are available.

This study reviews non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS)-related hospitalisations at National level in Spain between 2010 and 2015. NTS hospitalisations were obtained from the National Registry of Hospitalisations. A descriptive analysis of the hospitalisations was performed, including hospitalisation rates (HR) and case-fatality rates (CFR%) calculation. For those with NTS as Main Diagnosis logistic regression were used to estimate the relationship between the different factors and death outcome. 21,660 registered NTS-related hospitalisations were described (88.8% with Salmonella coded as Main Diagnosis). Average HR2010-2015 was 7.7 (range, 7.3 to 8.1) hospitalisations/100,000 population. Those with NTS infections as Secondary Diagnosis were on average (p < 0.001) older (47.9 vs. 36.5 years), presented worse Charlson Comorbidity Index (2.1 vs. 1.2), higher CFR% (4.8% vs. 0.7%), spent more days hospitalised (15.1 vs. 5.8 days), and generated more costs (6173 vs. 4272 euros/per hospitalisation) than those with NTS as Main Diagnosis. For those with NTS as Main Diagnosis increased risk of death was related to being > 64 years old (OR = 20.99; p < 0.001); presenting septicaemia (OR = 15.82; p < 0.001) or localised infections (OR = 3.98; p = 0.061); Charlson Comorbidity Index > 3 (OR = 4.57; p < 0.001); a non-HIV co-infection (OR = 1.80; p = 0.013); other risk factors (OR = 5.70; p < 0.001); bowel perforation (OR = 70.30; p < 0.001); or acute renal failure (OR = 1.95; p = 0.001). In those with Salmonella as Main Diagnosis, among all complications, bowel perforation presented the strongest association with death outcome. Clinical practice guidelines can help to identify patients at risk of bowel perforation to reduce the fatality of the disease.

The zona pellucida (ZP) is an extracellular envelope that surrounds mammalian oocytes. This coat participates in the interaction between gametes, induction of the acrosome reaction, block of polyspermy and protection of the oviductal embryo. Previous studies suggested that carnivore ZP was formed by three glycoproteins (ZP2, ZP3 and ZP4), with ZP1 being a pseudogene. However, a recent study in the cat found that all four proteins were expressed. In the present study, in silico and molecular analyses were performed in several carnivores to clarify the ZP composition in this order of mammals. The in silico analysis demonstrated the presence of the ZP1 gene in five carnivores: cheetah, panda, polar bear, tiger and walrus, whereas in the Antarctic fur seal and the Weddell seal there was evidence of pseudogenisation. Molecular analysis showed the presence of four ZP transcripts in ferret ovaries (ZP1, ZP2, ZP3 and ZP4) and three in fox ovaries (ZP2, ZP3 and ZP4). Analysis of the fox ZP1 gene showed the presence of a stop codon. The results strongly suggest that all four ZP genes are expressed in most carnivores, whereas ZP1 pseudogenisation seems to have independently affected three families (Canidae, Otariidae and Phocidae) of the carnivore tree.

BACKGROUND: With the availability of high-quality asthma guidelines worldwide, one possible approach of developing a valid guideline, without re-working the evidence, already analysed by major guidelines, is the ADAPTE approach, as was used for the development of National Guidelines on asthma. METHODS: The guidelines development group (GDG) covered a broad range of experts from medical specialities, primary care physicians and methodologists. The core group of the GDG searched the literature for asthma guidelines 2005 onward, and analysed the 11 best guidelines with AGREE-II to select three mother guidelines. Key clinical questions were formulated covering each step of the asthma management. RESULTS: The selected mother guidelines are British Thoracic Society (BTS), GINA and GEMA 2015. Responses to the questions were formulated according to the evidence in the mother guidelines. Recommendations or suggestions were made for asthma treatment in Mexico by the core group, and adjusted during several rounds of a Delphi process, taking into account: 1. Evidence; 2. Safety; 3. Cost; 4. Patient preference - all these set against the background of the local reality. Here the detailed analysis of the evidence present in BTS/GINA/GEMA sections on prevention and diagnosis in paediatric asthma are presented for three age-groups: children with asthma ≤5 years, 6-11 years and ≥12 years. CONCLUSIONS: For the prevention and diagnosis sections, applying the AGREE-II method is useful to develop a scientifically-sustained document, adjusted to the local reality per country, as is the Mexican Guideline on Asthma.

Animal health surveillance enables the detection and control of animal diseases including zoonoses. Under the EU-FP7 project RISKSUR, a survey was conducted in 11 EU Member States and Switzerland to describe active surveillance components in 2011 managed by the public or private sector and identify gaps and opportunities. Information was collected about hazard, target population, geographical focus, legal obligation, management, surveillance design, risk-based sampling, and multi-hazard surveillance. Two countries were excluded due to incompleteness of data. Most of the 664 components targeted cattle (26·7%), pigs (17·5%) or poultry (16·0%). The most common surveillance objectives were demonstrating freedom from disease (43·8%) and case detection (26·8%). Over half of components applied risk-based sampling (57·1%), but mainly focused on a single population stratum (targeted risk-based) rather than differentiating between risk levels of different strata (stratified risk-based). About a third of components were multi-hazard (37·3%). Both risk-based sampling and multi-hazard surveillance were used more frequently in privately funded components. The study identified several gaps (e.g. lack of systematic documentation, inconsistent application of terminology) and opportunities (e.g. stratified risk-based sampling). The greater flexibility provided by the new EU Animal Health Law means that systematic evaluation of surveillance alternatives will be required to optimize cost-effectiveness.

The oviduct undergoes changes under the influence of steroid hormones during the oestrous cycle. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying oviductal regulation are not fully understood. The aim of the present study was to identify the gene expression profile of the porcine oviduct in different stages of the cycle using microarray technology. A systematic study was performed on animals at four different stage: prepubertal gilts, and sows in the preovulatory, postovulatory and luteal phase of the oestrous cycle. The porcine oviduct expressed a total of 4929 genes. Moreover, significant differences in the expression of several genes were detected as the oestrous cycle progressed. Analysis of the differentially expressed genes indicated that a total of 86, 89 and 15 genes were upregulated in prepubertal gilts, preovulatory and luteal sows respectively compared with levels observed in postovulatory sows. Moreover, 80, 51 and 64 genes were downregulated in prepubertal, preovulatory and luteal animals respectively compared with the postovulatory sows. The concentrations of 10 selected transcripts were quantified by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to validate the cDNA array hybridisation data. Conversely, for some genes, localisation of corresponding protein expression in the oviduct was analysed by immunohistochemistry (i.e. cholecystokinin, glutathione peroxidase 2, mucin 1, phosphatidylethanolamine binding protein 4 and tachykinin 3) and mass spectrometry analysis of oviductal fluid allowed identification of peptides from all five proteins. The results of the present study demonstrate that gene expression in the porcine oviduct is clearly regulated during the oestrous cycle, with some oviductal proteins that could be related to several reproductive processes described here for the first time.

In this globalized world, the spread of new, exotic and re-emerging diseases has become one of the most important threats to animal production and public health. This systematic review analyses conventional and novel early detection methods applied to surveillance. In all, 125 scientific documents were considered for this study. Exotic (n = 49) and re-emerging (n = 27) diseases constituted the most frequently represented health threats. In addition, the majority of studies were related to zoonoses (n = 66). The approaches found in the review could be divided in surveillance modalities, both active (n = 23) and passive (n = 5); and tools and methodologies that support surveillance activities (n = 57). Combinations of surveillance modalities and tools (n = 40) were also found. Risk-based approaches were very common (n = 60), especially in the papers describing tools and methodologies (n = 50). The main applications, benefits and limitations of each approach were extracted from the papers. This information will be very useful for informing the development of tools to facilitate the design of cost-effective surveillance strategies. Thus, the current literature review provides key information about the advantages, disadvantages, limitations and potential application of methodologies for the early detection of new, exotic and re-emerging diseases.

In Europe, chestnut blight caused by Cryphonectria parasitica (Murrill) Barr was first seen in Italy in 1938 (1). In Spain, the disease was first detected in Basque country in 1947 and later in other areas of northern Spain: Galicia, León, Navarra, and Catalonia, and in Trás-os-Montes in Portugal (2). In November 2012, in an orchard (2 ha) in Almonaster la Real (Huelva, Spain), approximately 20 cankered Castanea sativa (sweet chestnut) trees cv. Vazqueño, 40 to 50 years old, were observed. The trees were grafted 2 years before. In May and June 2013, six new disease focuses were detected near the first one. Five focuses were located in the same village and the other in Jabugo (a neighboring village). Diseased trees exhibited sunken cankers, cracked bark with mycelial fan spreads under the bark, and in some cases, orange fungal sporulation was visible on the bark. Samples were collected from two affected trees and symptom-bearing bark pieces were then placed in moist chambers at 20°C for up to 8 days to induce fungal sporulation. Cultures were made from spore masses extruding from the cankered bark and from the edge of necrotic lesions visible in the phloem of cankered bark tissue onto potato dextrose agar (PDA). Monoconidial fungal isolates were obtained from both trees. The morphological structure of two isolated fungi was identical to that described as C. parasitica (3). Species identity was confirmed by analysis of nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA, using ITS1-ITS4 (4) as primer pairs, respectively. BLAST searches showed a high similarity between collected isolates' DNA sequences and C. parasitica sequences found on GenBank (96% coverage, 99% identity). Our isolates have been included in GenBank as KF220298 and KF220299. The pathogenicity assay of these two isolates was conducted using two cultivars of sweet chestnut (seedlings from Huelva and Granada nurseries). Isolate pathogenicity was tested on 3-year-old chestnut seedlings in a growth chamber at 25°C (day) and 20°C (night) with a 14-h photoperiod. The isolates were cultured on PDA at 25°C for 7 days. Stems were wounded at 10 cm height with a drill. Each isolate was inoculated to 25 replicates per cultivar by placing a mycelia agar plug (4 to 5 mm diameter) in the hole and wrapping the stem with Parafilm. Plants treated identically with sterile agar plugs were used as controls. Plants were then maintained at 100% relative humidity for 2 h. Both isolates induced diseases symptoms and death of seedlings of both cultivars at a mean time of 37.5 days after inoculation. No significant differences between isolates or between cultivars were detected. Twenty control plants similarly treated with sterile PDA discs did not display symptoms. C. parasitica was re-isolated from lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. Andalusia has 14,000 ha of chestnut crops with high commercial value due to their precocity. Dispersion of chestnut blight in this zone can reduce crop productivity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. parasitica causing chestnut blight in Andalusia (southern Spain), one of the few areas left in southwestern Europe free of chestnut blight. STUDY QUESTION: Is zona pellucida (ZP) resistance to proteolysis, induced by oviductal fluid (OF), a mechanism common to species other than the pig and cow? SUMMARY ANSWER: ZP resistance to proteolysis induced by OF was observed in the mouse, rat, hamster, rabbit, sheep, goat, pig and cow, but not in humans. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Oviductal ZP resistance to proteolysis occurs in the pig and cow where it influences the incidence of fertilization and polyspermy. The effect is observed after incubation of ZP in OFs from pig (pOF), cow (cOF), rabbit (rOF) and sheep (sOF). STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Oocytes from nine different species, including ungulates, rodents, lagomorphs and primates were incubated in rOF, sOF, gOF, cOF, pOF and human oviductal fluid (hOF). ZP digestion times for the matured oocytes of these nine species, without any treatment or incubated in 5 (mouse, rat, hamster, rabbit, cow, ewe and goat) or 6 (pig and humans) of the OFs collected were compared using three replicates per treatment and at least three oocytes per replicate. MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: In vivo matured oocytes from rat, hamster, mouse, rabbit and humans, in vitro matured oocytes from cow, goat, ewe and pig and rOF, cOF, gOF, sOF, pOF and human (hOF) were collected and processed for the study. Oocytes from each species were incubated in the different OFs for 30 min. The resistance of the ZP of the oocytes to enzymatic digestion in a pronase solution (0.5% in PBS) was measured and registered as ZP digestion time. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: rOF increased ZP resistance to proteolytic digestion in the range of between 96 and 720 h for any of the species tested, whereas the corresponding increase in human ZP was only 1 min. OFs from the remaining species also had a significant effect, with variations among the cross-species experiments (P < 0.05). hOF, which was only tested on human and porcine oocytes, had no effect on ZP chemical hardening. Measurements of ZP digestion times are not of extreme accuracy and errors of a few seconds can be assumed in the experimental data. However, when differences are in the range of hours among treatments, variations measured in seconds do not alter the robustness of the findings. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Human oocytes and OF were of limited access, compared with oocytes from species collected in slaughterhouses. OFs from mouse, rat and hamster were not tested due to the small size of the genital tract in these species and the small volume of fluid available. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Since oviductal modification of ZP resistance to proteolytic digestion has been demonstrated to influence fertilization and this pre-fertilization mechanism is considered to contribute to the control of polyspermy, the apparent absence of this mechanism in humans suggests that the regulation of polyspermy depends mainly on other mechanisms, most probably of cortical granule origin. Investigation into a possible relationship between the lack of oviductal ZP hardening in human oocytes and the existence of tubal ectopic pregnancies in this species is proposed. Nonimmediate drug hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) are difficult to manage in daily clinical practice, mainly owing to their heterogeneous clinical manifestations and the lack of selective biological markers. In vitro methods are necessaryto establish a diagnosis, especially given the low sensitivity of skin tests and the inherent risks of drug provocation testing. In vitro evaluation of nonimmediate DHRs must include approaches that can be applied during the different phases of the reaction. During the acute phase, monitoring markers in both skin and peripheral blood helps to discriminate between immediate and nonimmediate DHRs with cutaneous responses and to distinguish between reactions that, although they present similar clinical symptoms, are produced by different immunological mechanisms and therefore have a different treatment and prognosis. During the resolution phase, in vitro testing is used to detect the response of T cells to drug stimulation; however, this approach has certain limitations, such as the lack of validated studies assessing sensitivity. Moreover, in vitro tests indicate an immune response that is not always related to a DHR. In this review, members of the Immunology and Drug Allergy Committee of the Spanish Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) provide an overview of the most widely used in vitro tests for evaluating nonimmediate DHRs.

A field survey conducted in September 2009 at five plantations of six different cultivars of southern highbush blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) in Huelva, Spain, yielded 35 diseased plants. Diseased plants exhibited red-brown cankers and stem dieback. Blueberry cultivation in Huelva rose from 290 ha in 2007 to 777 ha in 2012, and the increase of these symptoms is of concern to producers. Stem pieces cut from the edge of lesions on infected plants were surface-disinfected with 5% sodium hypochlorite and cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Based on colony characteristics on PDA, 18 colonies (one each from 18 different plants) were identified as Botryosphaeria spp. Species identities were confirmed by analysis of nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), rDNA, and elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α) sequences, using ITS1-ITS4 (3) and EF728f-EF986r (2) as primer pairs, respectively. BLAST searches of GenBank showed a high similarity of the isolate sequences to the reference sequences. Molecular results confirmed these species as Neofusicoccum parvum, N. australe, and B. dothidea. N. parvum was the most prevalent (on 34% of the plants analyzed), followed by N. australe and B. dothidea (9% each). In phylogenetic analyses, isolates that clustered in the same group belonged to the same species with a high homogeneity index (>99%). One representative isolate of each species was selected for a pathogenicity assay. Amplified sequences from each selected isolate were deposited in GenBank with the following accession numbers: N. parvum, KC556958 (ITS) and KC556961 (EF); N. australe, KC556959 (ITS) and KC556962 (EF); and B. dothidea, KC556960 (ITS) and KC556963 (EF). The pathogenicity assay of these three isolates was conducted using two cultivars of southern highbush blueberry, 'Misty' and 'Star.' The isolates were cultured on acidified PDA at 25°C for 5 days. Stems of the plants were wounded at a height of 10 cm with a drill (5 mm diameter and ~4 mm deep). Six replicates per cultivar were inoculated per isolate by placing a colonized agar plug (4 to 5 mm diameter) in the hole and wrapping the stem with Parafilm. Plants treated identically with sterile agar plugs were used as controls. The plants were then maintained at 100% relative humidity for 2 h. This trial was conducted in a growth chamber at 28°C (night) and 30°C (day) with a 14-h photoperiod for 3 months. Disease was measured on a six-point scale: 0 = healthy plant; 1 = plant with a canker smaller than 3.5 cm; 2 = plant with a canker bigger than 3.5 cm; 3 = plant with one dry shoot; 4 = plant with some dry shoots; 5 = dead plant. At the end of the trial, disease was expressed as area under the disease progress curve. The results showed the N. parvum isolate to be the most aggressive, followed by the N. australe isolate. Espinoza et al. (1) also found that N. parvum showed more aggressiveness than N. australe on blueberries in Chile. B. dothidea was not pathogenic and behaved similarly to the controls (P < 0.05). Each pathogen was reisolated from all the inoculated plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of isolates of these pathogens, N. parvum and N. australe, causing stem canker and dieback on blueberry bushes in Spain. References: (1) J. G. Arsenic (As) in groundwater for domestic use poses a worldwide threat to public health, most notably in rural areas. The aims of this study were: first, determine groundwater composition in a mining area in central Mexico (Huautla); second, assess As exposure through human groundwater consumption and; third, develop and test a household filter to obtain drinking water for these rural communities. From the 17th century through the 1990s, mines in the area produced Ag-galena and sphalerite from volcanic rock. Groundwater flooded the mines when they were abandoned due to low silver prices. Local households now use the water to meet domestic needs. Water from the mines was found to have high As content (0.04-0.26 mg L(-1)) and Fe, Mn, Pb and Cd were also above Mexican drinking water standards and WHO guidelines. All the population in the Huautla community was exposed to the metalloid through water used in food preparation. The best As removal was obtained with a filter using oxidized commercial fiber (HCl 2N as oxidant). Concentrations in the effluent were below Mexican drinking water standards (0.025 mg As L(-1) water) during the 105-day (2520 h) filter operation, with a maximum As removal efficiency of 95.4%. The household filter was simple, low-cost and may be very attractive for As removal in rural areas in developing countries.

The oviduct or Fallopian tube is the anatomical region where every new life begins in mammalian species. After a long journey, the spermatozoa meet the oocyte in the specific site of the oviduct named ampulla and fertilization takes place. The successful fertilization depends on several biological processes that occur in the oviduct some hours before this rendezvous and affect both gametes. Estrogen and progesterone, released from the ovary, orchestrate a series of changes by genomic and nongenomic pathways in the oviductal epithelium affecting gene expression, proteome, and secretion of its cells into the fluid bathing the oviductal lumen. In addition, new regulatory molecules are being discovered playing important roles in oviductal physiology and fertilization. The present review tries to describe these processes, building a comprehensive map of the physiology of the oviduct, to better understand the importance of this organ in reproduction. With this purpose, gamete transport, sperm and oocyte changes in the oviductal environment, and other interactions between gametes and oviduct are discussed in light of recent publications in the field.

The mammalian oviduct is an anatomical part of the female reproductive tract, which plays several important roles in the events related to fertilization and embryo development. This review examines and compares several studies related to the proteomic and transcriptomic profile of the oviduct in different domestic animals. This information could be important for clarifying the role of oviductal factors in different events regulating fertilization and early embryo development, as well as for improving synthetic media for in vitro maturation/in vitro fertilization/embryo culture techniques (IVM/IVF/EC).

The Drug Allergy Committee of the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology reviewed the allergenic potential of several substances of food origin that are found in the composition of some drugs. Despite recent legislation on labeling, many labels do not clearly state whether the drug contains raw material (active ingredients, excipient, or other manufacturing intermediate) with an origin in any of the substances in the list of the 14 groups of food allergens that are subject to mandatory declaration. The objective of legislation is that the drug package, the Summary of Product Characteristics, and the patient information leaflet clearly state the food content in order to improve the safety of allergic patients. Therefore, any food or allergen derivative that must be declared should be clearly stated on the drug label. Of all the evaluated products, egg and milk derivatives are the most frequently discussed in literature reviews. The natural or synthetic origin of potentially allergenic substances such as lysozyme, casein, lactose, albumin, phosphatide, and aromatic essences should be clearly stated. Providing this information has 2 clear advantages. First, allergic reactions to drugs in patients with food allergy could be avoided (if the substances have a natural origin). Second, prescription would improve by not restricting drugs containing synthetic substances (which do not usually induce allergic reactions).

The country of Mexico is facing serious problems with water quality and supply for human use and consumption in rural communities, mainly due to topographic and isolation. In Mexico the average annual precipitation is 1,500 cubic kilometers of water, if 3% of that amount were used, 13 million Mexicans could be supplied with drinking water that they currently do not have access. Considering the limited infrastructure and management in rural communities, which do not receive services from the centralized systems of large cities, a modified pilot multi-stage filtration (MMSF) system was designed, developed, and evaluated for treating collected rainwater in three rural communities, Ajuchitlan and Villa Nicolas Zapata (Morelos State) and Xacxamayo (Puebla State). The efficiencies obtained in the treatment system were: colour and turbidity >93%. It is worth mentioning that the water obtained for human use and consumption complies with the Mexican Standard NOM-127-SSA1-1994.

Nanoscale bimetallic Pd-Ti catalysts on carbon supports were prepared in liquid using ammonium tetrachloropalladate and titanium isopropoxide. The size of the metal particles ranged from subnanometer to greater than 10 nm, and the X-ray diffraction pattern of metal particles was dominated by a cubic crystalline structure. Depending upon the preparation conditions, the catalysts were comprised of Pd and TiO2 or Pd3Ti-like alloy. The surface Ti/Pd ratio was much greater than the original metal loading. We propose that the bimetallic particles were comprised of short-range Pd and TiO2 or Pd-Ti alloy nanocrystal covered by a thin TiO2 layer.
