RESUMO

The most recent version of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of localised colon cancer was published in 2020. It was decided by both the ESMO and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO) to convene a special virtual guidelines meeting in March 2021 to adapt the ESMO 2020 guidelines to take into account the ethnic differences associated with the treatment of localised colon cancer in Asian patients. These guidelines represent the consensus opinions reached by experts in the treatment of patients with localised colon cancer representing the oncological societies of Japan (JSMO), China (CSCO), India (ISMPO), Korea (KSMO), Malaysia (MOS), Singapore (SSO) and Taiwan (TOS). The voting was based on scientific evidence and was independent of the current treatment practices and drug availability and reimbursement situations in the different Asian countries.

BACKGROUND: Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG) 0212 (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00190541) was a non-inferiority phase III trial of patients with clinical stage II-III rectal cancer without lateral pelvic lymph node enlargement. The trial compared mesorectal excision (ME) with ME and lateral lymph node dissection (LLND), with a primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival (RFS). The planned primary analysis at 5 years failed to confirm the non-inferiority of ME alone compared with ME and LLND. The present study aimed to compare ME alone and ME with LLND using long-term follow-up data from JCOG0212. METHODS: Patients with clinical stage II-III rectal cancer below the peritoneal reflection and no lateral pelvic lymph node enlargement were included in this study. After surgeons confirmed R0 resection by ME, patients were randomized to receive ME alone or ME with LLND. The primary endpoint was RFS. RESULTS: A total of 701 patients from 33 institutions were assigned to ME with LLND (351) or ME alone (350) between June 2003 and August 2010. The 7-year RFS rate was 71.1 per cent for ME with LLND and 70·7 per cent for ME alone (hazard ratio (HR) 1·09, 95 per cent c.i. 0·84 to 1·42; non-inferiority P = 0·064). Subgroup analysis showed improved RFS among patients with clinical stage III disease who underwent ME with LLND compared with ME alone (HR 1·49, 1·02 to 2·17). CONCLUSION: Long-term follow-up data did not support the non-inferiority of ME alone compared with ME and LLND. ME with LLND is recommended for patients with clinical stage III disease, whereas LLND could be omitted in those with clinical stage II tumours.


ANTECEDENTES: El JCOG0212 (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00190541) fue un ensayo fase III de no inferioridad en pacientes con cáncer de recto en estadio clínico II/III sin ganglios linfáticos aumentados de tamaño en la pared pélvica lateral. El ensayo comparó la escisión del mesorrecto (mesorectal excision, ME) con la ME con disección de los ganglios linfáticos laterales (lateral lymph node dissection, LLND), siendo el criterio de valoración principal la supervivencia libre de recidiva (recurrence free survival, RFS). El análisis primario planificado a los 5 años de seguimiento no pudo confirmar la no inferioridad de la ME frente a la ME con LLND. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comparar la ME como procedimiento único y la ME con LLND utilizando datos de seguimiento a largo plazo del ensayo JCOG0212. MÉTODOS: En este estudio se incluyeron pacientes con cáncer de recto en estadio clínico II/III por debajo de la reflexión peritoneal sin ganglios linfáticos aumentados de tamaño en la pared pélvica lateral. Después de que los cirujanos confirmaran la resección R0 mediante la ME, los pacientes fueron asignados al azar al brazo de ME sola o al brazo de ME con LLND. El criterio de valoración principal fue la supervivencia libre de recidiva (RFS). RESULTADOS: Un total de 701 pacientes de 33 instituciones fueron asignados al azar para ser tratados mediante una ME con LLND (n = 351) o EM sola (n = 350) entre junio de 2003 y agosto de 2010. Las tasas de RFS a 7 años fueron del 71,1% para ME con LLND y 70,7 % para ME sola (cociente de riesgos instantáneos, hazard ratio, HR: 1,09 (i.c. del 95% 0,84-1,42), no inferioridad P = 0,064)). Pluripotent stem cells offer the potential for an unlimited source for cell therapy products. However, there is concern regarding the tumorigenicity of these products in humans, mainly due to the possible unintended contamination of undifferentiated cells or transformed cells. Because of the complex nature of these new therapies and the lack of a globally accepted consensus on the strategy for tumorigenicity evaluation, a case-by-case approach is recommended for the risk assessment of each cell therapy product. In general, therapeutic products need to be qualified using available technologies, which ideally should be fully validated. In such circumstances, the developers of cell therapy products may have conducted various tumorigenicity tests and consulted with regulators in respective countries. Here, we critically review currently available in vivo and in vitro testing methods for tumorigenicity evaluation against expectations in international regulatory guidelines. We discuss the value of those approaches, in particular the limitations of in vivo methods, and comment on challenges and future directions. In addition, we note the need for an internationally harmonized procedure for tumorigenicity assessment of cell therapy products from both regulatory and technological perspectives.

This randomized, multicenter study compared the efficacy of docetaxel with or without capecitabine following fluorouracil/epirubicin/cyclophosphamide (FEC) therapy in operable breast cancer and investigated the role of Ki67 as a predictive biomarker. Patients were randomized to 4 cycles of docetaxel/capecitabine (docetaxel: 75 mg/m2 on day 1; capecitabine: 1,650 mg/m2 on days 1­14 every 3 weeks) or docetaxel alone (75 mg/m2 on day 1 every 3 weeks) after completion of 4 cycles of FEC (5-fluorouracil 500 mg/m2, epirubicin 100 mg/m2 and cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2 on day 1 every 3 weeks). The primary endpoint was the pathological complete response (pCR) rate. Predictive factor analysis was conducted using clinicopathological markers, including hormone receptors and Ki67 labeling index (Ki67LI). A total of 477 patients were randomized; the overall response in the docetaxel/capecitabine and docetaxel groups was 88.3 and 87.4 %, respectively. There were no significant differences in the pCR rate (docetaxel/capecitabine: 23 %; docetaxel: 24 %; p = 0.748), disease-free survival, or overall survival. However, patients with mid-range Ki67LI (10­20 %) showed a trend towards improved pCR rate with docetaxel/capecitabine compared to docetaxel alone. Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed pre-treatment Ki67LI (odds ratio 1.031; 95 % CI 1.014­1.048; p = 0.0004) to be a significant predictor of pCR in this neoadjuvant treatment setting. Docetaxel/capecitabine (after 4 cycles of FEC) did not generate significant improvement in pCR compared to docetaxel alone. However, exploratory analyses suggested that assessment of pre-treatment Ki67LI may be a useful tool in the identification of responders to preoperative docetaxel/capecitabine in early-stage breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: We conducted comprehensive clinical and molecular characterization of claudin 18.2 expression (CLDN18.2) in advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancer (GC/GEJC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with advanced GC/GEJC who received systemic chemotherapy from October 2015 to December 2019 with available tumor specimens were analyzed. We evaluated clinicopathological features of CLDN18.2 expression with four molecular subtypes: mismatch repair deficient, Epstein-Barr virus-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive, and others. In addition, programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) combined positive score (CPS), genomic alterations, and the expression of immune cell markers were assessed. Clinical outcomes of standard first- or second-line chemotherapy and subsequent anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (anti-PD-1) therapy were also investigated according to CLDN18.2 expression. RESULTS: Among 408 patients, CLDN18.2-positive (moderate-to-strong expression in ≥75%) was identified in 98 patients (24.0%) with almost equal distribution in the four molecular subtypes or CPS subgroups. CLDN18.2-positive was associated with Borrmann type 4, KRAS amplification, low CD16, and high CD68 expression. Overall survival with first-line chemotherapy was not significantly different between CLDN18.2-positive and -negative groups [median 18.4 versus 20.1 months; hazard ratio 1.26 (95% confidence interval 0.89-1.78); P = 0.191] regardless of stratification by PD-L1 CPS ≥5. Progression-free survival and objective response rates of first- and second-line chemotherapy, and anti-PD-1 therapy also showed no significant differences according to CLDN18.2 status. CONCLUSIONS: CLDN18.2 expression in advanced GC/GEJC was associated with some clinical and molecular features but had no impact on treatment outcomes with chemotherapy or checkpoint inhibition. CLDN18.2-positive also had no impact on overall survival. This information could be useful to interpret the results from currently ongoing clinical trials of CLDN18.2-targeted therapies for advanced GC/GEJC and to consider a treatment strategy for CLDN18.2-positive GC/GEJC.

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), published in late 2022, were adapted in December 2022, according to previously established standard methodology, to produce the Pan-Asian adapted (PAGA) ESMO consensus guidelines for the management of Asian patients with mCRC. The adapted guidelines presented in this manuscript represent the consensus opinions reached by a panel of Asian experts in the treatment of patients with mCRC representing the oncological societies of China (CSCO), Indonesia (ISHMO), India (ISMPO), Japan (JSMO), Korea (KSMO), Malaysia (MOS), the Philippines (PSMO), Singapore (SSO), Taiwan (TOS) and Thailand (TSCO), co-ordinated by ESMO and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO). The voting was based on scientific evidence and was independent of the current treatment practices, drug access restrictions and reimbursement decisions in the different Asian countries. The latter are discussed separately in the manuscript. The aim is to provide guidance for the optimisation and harmonisation of the management of patients with mCRC across the different countries of Asia, drawing on the evidence provided by both Western and Asian trials, whilst respecting the differences in screening practices, molecular profiling and age and stage at presentation, coupled with a disparity in the drug approvals and reimbursement strategies, between the different countries.

BACKGROUND: KRAS mutations are predictive markers for the efficacy of anti-EGFR antibody therapies in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Although the mutational status of KRAS is reportedly highly concordant between primary and metastatic lesions, it is not yet clear whether genotoxic chemotherapies might induce additional mutations. METHODS: A total of 63 lesions (23 baseline primary, 18 metastatic and 24 post-treatment metastatic) from 21 patients who were treated with FOLFOX as adjuvant therapy for stage III/IV colorectal cancer following curative resection were examined. The DNA samples were obtained from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens, and KRAS, NRAS, BRAF and PIK3CA mutations were evaluated. RESULTS: The numbers of primary lesions with wild-type and mutant KRAS codons 12 and 13 were 8 and 13, respectively. The mutational status of KRAS remained concordant between the primary tumours and the post-FOLFOX metastatic lesions, irrespective of patient background, treatment duration and disease-free survival. Furthermore, the mutational statuses of the other genes evaluated were also concordant between the primary and metastatic lesions. CONCLUSION: Because the mutational statuses of predictive biomarker genes were not altered by FOLFOX therapy, specimens from both primary tumours and post-FOLFOX tumour metastases might serve as valid sources of DNA for known genomic biomarker testing.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common malignancy in Japan. Treatment with inhibitors of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signalling pathway has proven benefit in metastatic CRC. Cediranib is an oral highly potent VEGF signalling inhibitor that inhibits all three VEGF receptors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this phase II, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 172 patients with metastatic CRC were randomised to receive once-daily cediranib (20 or 30 mg) or placebo, each combined with modified FOLFOX6 (mFOLFOX6). The primary objective was comparison of progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS: The comparison of cediranib 20 mg versus placebo met the primary objective of PFS prolongation [hazard ratio = 0.70 (95% confidence interval 0.44-1.11), P = 0.167], which met the protocol-defined criterion of P < 0.2. Median PFS was 10.2 versus 8.3 months, respectively. The PFS comparison for cediranib 30 mg versus placebo did not meet the criterion. The most common adverse events (AEs) in the cediranib-containing groups were diarrhoea and hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: Cediranib 20 mg plus mFOLFOX6 met the predefined criteria in terms of improved PFS compared with placebo plus mFOLFOX6. Cediranib 20 mg was generally well tolerated and the AE profile was consistent with previous studies.

Nomogram, a standard technique that utilizes multiple characteristics to predict efficacy of treatment and likelihood of a specific status of an individual patient, has been used for prediction of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer patients. The aim of this study was to develop a novel computational technique to predict the pathological complete response (pCR) to NAC in primary breast cancer patients. A mathematical model using alternating decision trees, an epigone of decision tree, was developed using 28 clinicopathological variables that were retrospectively collected from patients treated with NAC (n = 150), and validated using an independent dataset from a randomized controlled trial (n = 173). The model selected 15 variables to predict the pCR with yielding area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) values of 0.766 [95 % confidence interval (CI)], 0.671-0.861, P value < 0.0001) in cross-validation using training dataset and 0.787 (95 % CI 0.716-0.858, P value < 0.0001) in the validation dataset. Among three subtypes of breast cancer, the luminal subgroup showed the best discrimination (AUC = 0.779, 95 % CI 0.641-0.917, P value = 0.0059). The developed model (AUC = 0.805, 95 % CI 0.716-0.894, P value < 0.0001) outperformed multivariate logistic regression (AUC = 0.754, 95 % CI 0.651-0.858, P value = 0.00019) of validation datasets without missing values (n = 127). Several analyses, e.g. bootstrap analysis, revealed that the developed model was insensitive to missing values and also tolerant to distribution bias among the datasets. Our model based on clinicopathological variables showed high predictive ability for pCR. This model might improve the prediction of the response to NAC in primary breast cancer patients.

Formation of electron pairs is essential to superconductivity. For conventional superconductors, tunnelling spectroscopy has established that pairing is mediated by bosonic modes (phonons); a peak in the second derivative of tunnel current d2I/dV2 corresponds to each phonon mode. For high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) superconductivity, however, no boson mediating electron pairing has been identified. One explanation could be that electron pair formation and related electron-boson interactions are heterogeneous at the atomic scale and therefore challenging to characterize. However, with the latest advances in d2I/dV2 spectroscopy using scanning tunnelling microscopy, it has become possible to study bosonic modes directly at the atomic scale. Here we report d2I/dV2 imaging studies of the high-T(c) superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find intense disorder of electron-boson interaction energies at the nanometre scale, along with the expected modulations in d2I/dV2 (refs 9, 10). Changing the density of holes has minimal effects on both the average mode energies and the modulations, indicating that the bosonic modes are unrelated to electronic or magnetic structure. Instead, the modes appear to be local lattice vibrations, as substitution of 18O for 16O throughout the material reduces the average mode energy by approximately 6 per cent--the expected effect of this isotope substitution on lattice vibration frequencies. Significantly, the mode energies are always spatially anticorrelated with the superconducting pairing-gap energies, suggesting an interplay between these lattice vibration modes and the superconductivity.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to compare the sensitive and quality-controlled KRAS testing with direct sequencing and to assess the impact on decision making of treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed genomic DNA isolated from macrodissected formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens by direct sequencing and an amplification refractory mutation system-Scorpion assay (ARMS/S) method. Cetuximab was administered to patients identified as having wild-type (WT) KRAS using direct sequencing. Therapeutic effects were evaluated according to their KRAS status as determined by ARMS/S. RESULTS: Among the 159 patients, the overall mutation rate was determined to be 37.0% by direct sequencing and 44.0% by ARMS/S. For the patients diagnosed as WT by direct sequencing and treated with cetuximab (n=47), a response rate of 16.0% was observed for 38 ARMS/S WT patients, whereas 9 ARMS/S mutant (MUT) patients failed to respond. The ARMS/S WT patients showed significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) compared with ARMS/S MUT patients (PFS median 5.0 vs 1.7 months, hazards ratio (HR)=0.29, P=0.001; OS median 12.1 vs 3.8 months, HR=0.26, P=0.001). CONCLUSION: Sensitive and quality-controlled KRAS testing may provide improved predictive power to determine the efficacy of anti-epidermal growth factor antibodies.

RESUMO

The effect of Mn substitution in paramagnetic metal CaRuO(3) was studied by magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. Development of ferromagnetic order is observed for x≥0.2 in CaRu(1-x)Mn(x)O(3). For the sample with x = 0.4, the Curie temperature of ∼160 K is obtained from the Arrott plot and the ratio of effective moment and saturation moment P(eff)/M(0) is estimated to be ∼4.8. We further found that the magnetization is significantly suppressed with decreasing temperature T below ∼90 K. In the neutron diffraction experiment at T = 15 K, we observed the evolution of a magnetic Bragg peak originating from the G-type antiferromagnetic order as well as the ferromagnetic one. This strongly suggests that both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states are coexistent with each other at low temperatures. In the M(T)(0)(2) against T(2) plot (here, M(T)(0) is a spontaneous magnetization estimated from the Arrott plot), M(T)(0)(2) linearly increases with decreasing T(2) in the ferromagnetic region between ∼90 and 160 K. The ferromagnetic properties of the CaRu(1-x)Mn(x)O(3) system (x≤0.5) are well explained in terms of spin fluctuation theory based on the itinerant electron model rather than the localized spin model.

BACKGROUND: Dual blockade of HER2 promises increased pathological complete response (pCR) rate compared with single blockade in the presence of chemotherapy for HER2-positive (+) primary breast cancer. Many questions remain regarding optimal duration of treatment and combination impact of endocrine therapy for luminal HER2 disease. METHODS: We designed a randomised phase II, five-arm study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of lapatinib and trastuzumab (6 weeks) followed by lapatinib and trastuzumab plus weekly paclitaxel (12 weeks) with/without prolongation of anti-HER2 therapy prior to chemotherapy (18 vs. 6 weeks), and with/without endocrine therapy in patients with HER2+ and/or oestrogen receptor (ER)+ disease. The primary endpoint was comprehensive pCR (CpCR) rate. Among the secondary endpoints, pCR (yT0-isyN0) rate, safety, and clinical response were evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 215 patients were enrolled; 212 were included in the full analysis set (median age 53.0 years; tumour size = T2, 65%; and tumour spread = N0, 55%). CpCR was achieved in 101 (47.9%) patients and was significantly higher in ER- patients than in ER+ patients (ER- 63.0%, ER+ 36.1%; P = 0.0034). pCR with pN0 was achieved in 42.2% of patients (ER- 57.6%, ER+ 30.3%). No significant difference was observed in pCR rate between prolonged exposure groups and standard groups. Better clinical response outcomes were obtained in the prolongation phase of the anti-HER2 therapy. No surplus was detected in pCR rate by adding endocrine treatment. No major safety concern was recognised by prolonging the anti-HER2 treatment or adding endocrine therapy. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed the therapeutic impact of lapatinib, trastuzumab, and paclitaxel therapy for each ER- and ER+ subgroup of HER2+ patients. Development of further strategies and tools is required, particularly for luminal HER2 disease.

A computer-assisted analysis identified tentative target sequences for regulatory proteins including ecdysone-inducible factors such as BmFTZ-F1 and Broad-Complex Z4 (BR-C Z4) in the ie1 promoter of BmNPV. A transient expression experiment using BmN cells and a series of truncated ie1 promoter constructs demonstrated that the activity of the ie1 promoter responded to alpha-ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone, which required a tridecameric nucleotide stretch (ie1EcRE, 5'-GTGTTATCGACCT-3') homologous to the ecdysone response element reported for Drosophila (DmEcRE). RT-PCR demonstrated the expression of BmEcR and BmUSP, which are required as ecdysone-specific activators for EcRE-mediated activation, in BmN cells. Furthermore, the ie1 EcRE-mediated response was confirmed by using a recombinant BmNPV possessing a luciferase gene under the control of the ie1 promoter with or without ie1 EcRE. This is the first report of an ecdysone response element in a baculoviral gene promoter. These results also suggested that the regulation of the ie1 by ecdysone may militate viral replication at least under certain conditions during natural infections in vivo.

Tumor cells stimulate the formation of stroma that secretes various mediators pivotal for tumor growth, including growth factors, cytokines, and proteases. However, little is known about the local regulation of these soluble mediators in the human tumor microenvironment. In this study, the local expression of cytokines, chemokines, and angiogenic factors was investigated in primary breast cancer tissue. The concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-8, macrophage chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, epithelial-neutrophil activating peptide-78, vascular endothelial growth factor, and thymidine phosphorylase (TP) were measured in 151 primary breast cancer extracts by ELISA. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) were also examined by immunohistochemistry with anti-CD68 antibodies. The correlation between soluble mediators and the relationship between TAM count and soluble mediators were evaluated. MCP-1 concentration was correlated significantly with the level of vascular endothelial growth factor, TP, TNF-alpha, and IL-8, which are potent angiogenic factors. IL-4 concentration was correlated significantly with IL-8 and IL-10. On the other hand, an inverse association was observed between TP and IL-12. The level of MCP-1 was associated significantly with TAM accumulation. In the immunohistochemical analysis, MCP-1 expression was observed in both infiltrating macrophages and tumor cells. Prognostic analysis revealed that high expression of MCP-1, as well as of VEGF, was a significant indicator of early relapse. These findings indicate that interaction between the immune network system and angiogenesis is important for progression of human breast cancer, and that MCP-1 may play an important role in the regulation of angiogenesis and the immune system.

Tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) has a high affinity for fibrin and induces lysis of fibrin (fibrinolysis) on the surface of fibrin without degrading circulating fibrinogen. cDNA for t-PA which lacks the 'finger-domain' (the site for fibrin affinity) was isolated from Detroit 562 cells. Analysis of the nucleotide sequence revealed a lack of the sequences which code for the finger-domain. A plasmid (pDPAT 1) containing the Escherichia coli tac promoter/operator and the cDNA sequence coding for 'finger-domain lacking t-PA' was constructed for expression in E. Coli. The polypeptide so produced was a new type of t-PA lacking finger-domain, but revealed plasminogen activator activity with the function of fibrin affinity.

To determine hypophysiotrophic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-producing neurons in the rat hypothalamus, we employed a combination of the immunohistochemistry for TRH prohormone (pro-TRH) and the retrograde tracing of neurons that project to the median eminence (ME) by injecting biotinylated wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) into the ME. In intact rats, immunoreactive pro-TRH-positive neurons occurred in the parvicellular paraventricular nucleus (parvi-PVN), basal part of the anterior and lateral hypothalamus, perifornical area and dorsomedial nucleus, especially accumulating in the parvi-PVN. Twenty-four hours after injection of the WGA into the middle portion of the ME, we found neurons that incorporated the lectin in the anterior periventricular area, the PVN, and the arcuate nucleus. When we examined serial sections consecutively stained with anti-WGA, anti-pro-TRH, and anti-WGA, most of the pro-TRH-labeled neurons in the medial parvi-PVN and a part of the neurons in the anterior periventricular area and in the anterior, lateral, and dorsal parvi-PVN appeared to incorporate WGA. These neurons may correspond with the hypophysiotrophic TRH-synthesizing neurons in the rat hypothalamus.

During apoptosis, a number of intracellular proteins are cleaved by caspases. The intermediate filament protein cytokeratin 18 (CK18) is cleaved at Asp238 and Asp396. A monoclonal antibody, M30, specifically recognises a fragment of CK18 cleaved at Asp396 (M30-antigen). We used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure M30-antigen levels in the sera of 82 healthy subjects and 201 patients with breast cancer. Patients with primary cancer had higher M30-antigen levels than healthy subjects (P=0.0001). Patients with recurrent cancer showed higher M30-antigen levels than healthy controls and patients with primary cancer (P<0.0001 and P=0.008, respectively). In patients with primary cancer, M30-antigen levels were higher in the oestrogen receptor (ER)-negative subgroup than the ER-positive subgroup. In patients with recurrent cancer, M30-antigen levels correlated with the number of involved organs and performance status (P=0.041 and P=0.014, respectively). There was no association between serum M30-antigen levels and patient prognosis. We conclude that the levels of circulating M30-antigen are increased in patients with breast cancer.
