RESUMO

The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum invades and replicates asexually within human erythrocytes. CD44 expressed on erythrocytes was previously identified as an important host factor for P falciparum infection through a forward genetic screen, but little is known about its regulation or function in these cells, nor how it may be used by the parasite. We found that CD44 can be efficiently deleted from primary human hematopoietic stem cells using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and that the efficiency of ex vivo erythropoiesis to enucleated cultured red blood cells (cRBCs) is not affected by lack of CD44. However, the rate of P falciparum invasion was reduced in CD44-null cRBCs relative to isogenic wild-type control cells, validating CD44 as an important host factor for this parasite. We identified 2 P falciparum invasion ligands as binding partners for CD44, erythrocyte binding antigen 175 (EBA-175) and EBA-140 and demonstrated that their ability to bind to human erythrocytes relies primarily on their canonical receptors, glycophorin A and glycophorin C, respectively. We further show that EBA-175 induces phosphorylation of erythrocyte cytoskeletal proteins in a CD44-dependent manner. Our findings support a model in which P falciparum exploits CD44 as a coreceptor during invasion of human erythrocytes, stimulating CD44-dependent phosphorylation of host cytoskeletal proteins that alter host cell deformability and facilitate parasite entry.

RESUMO

A novel Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented, short rod-shaped bacterial strain, HBC34T, was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from Daechung Reservoir, Republic of Korea. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that HBC34T was affiliated with the genus Sphingobium and shared the highest sequence similarity to the type strains of Sphingobium vermicomposti (98.01 %), Sphingobium psychrophilum (97.87 %) and Sphingobium rhizovicinum (97.59 %). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridisation (dDDH) values between HBC34T and species of the genus Sphingobium with validly published names were below 84.01 and 28.1 %, respectively. These values were lower than the accepted species-delineation thresholds, supporting its recognition as representing a novel species of the genus Sphingobium. The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were identified as summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The main polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, two phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids. The respiratory quinone was Q-10. The genomic DNA G+C content of HBC34T was 64.04 %. The polyphasic evidence supports the classification of HBC34T as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Sphingobium, for which the name Sphingobium cyanobacteriorum sp. nov is proposed. The type strain is HBC34T (= KCTC 8002T= LMG 33140T).

Free-living litostomatean ciliates, prominent microeukaryote predators commonly encountered in freshwater and marine habitats, play vital roles in maintaining energy flow and nutrient cycles. Nevertheless, understanding their biodiversity and phylogenetic relationships remains challenging due to insufficient morphological information and molecular data. As a new contribution to this group, three haptorian ciliates, including two new species (Actinobolina bivacuolata sp. nov. and Papillorhabdos foissneri sp. nov.) and the insufficiently described type species, Actinobolina radians, were isolated from wetlands around Lake Weishan, China and investigated by a combination of living morphology, stained preparations, and 18S rRNA gene sequence data. An illustrated key of the valid species within the two genera is provided. In addition, we reveal the phylogenetic positions of these two genera for the first time. Although they differ in all key morphologic characters such as general appearance (ellipsoidal with numerous tentacles vs. cylindrical), extrusomes (stored in tentacles vs. anchored to pellicle), circumoral kinety (present vs. absent), composition of somatic kineties (kinetosome clusters vs. monokinetids), and number of dorsal brush rows (1 vs. 4), they both cluster in a fully supported clade in the phylogenetic tree, which indicates that the biodiversity and additional molecular markers of this group need further exploration.

The massive proliferation of Microcystis threatens freshwater ecosystems and degrades water quality globally. Understanding the mechanisms that contribute to Microcystis growth is crucial for managing Microcystis blooms. The lifestyles of bacteria can be classified generally into two groups: particle-attached (PA; > 3 µm) and free-living (FL; 0.2-3.0 µm). However, little is known about the response of PA and FL bacteria to Microcystis blooms. Using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, we investigated the stability, assembly process, and co-occurrence patterns of PA and FL bacterial communities during distinct bloom stages. PA bacteria were phylogenetically different from their FL counterparts. Microcystis blooms substantially influenced bacterial communities. The time decay relationship model revealed that Microcystis blooms might increase the stability of both PA and FL bacterial communities. A contrasting community assembly mechanism was observed between the PA and FL bacterial communities. Throughout Microcystis blooms, homogeneous selection was the major assembly process that impacted the PA bacterial community, whereas drift explained much of the turnover of the FL bacterial community. Both PA and FL bacterial communities could be separated into modules related to different phases of Microcystis blooms. Microcystis blooms altered the assembly process of PA and FL bacterial communities. PA bacterial community appeared to be more responsive to Microcystis blooms than FL bacteria. Decomposition of Microcystis blooms may enhance cooperation among bacteria. Our findings highlight the importance of studying bacterial lifestyles to understand their functions in regulating Microcystis blooms. A novel Gram-negative, white-pigmented, and auxin-producing strain, 20NA77.5T, was isolated from fresh water during cyanobacterial bloom period. Pairwise comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 20NA77.5T belonged to the genus Undibacterium and exhibited the highest sequence similarity to the type strains of Undibacterium danionis (98.00%), Undibacterium baiyunense (97.93%), Undibacterium macrobrachii (97.92%), and Undibacterium fentianense (97.71%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain 20NA77.5T and its related type strains were below 79.93 and 23.80%, respectively. The predominant fatty acids (> 10% of the total fatty acids) were C16:0 and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c). The genomic DNA G + C content of strain 20NA77.5T was found to be 48.61%. Based on the phylogenetic distinctness, chemotaxonomic features, and phenotypic features, strain 20NA77.5T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Undibacterium, for which the name Undibacterium cyanobacteriorum sp. nov is proposed. The type strain is 20NA77.5T (= KCTC 8005T = LMG 33136T).

RESUMO

Antibiotic pollution is an emerging environmental challenge. Residual antibiotics from various sources, including municipal and industrial wastewater, sewage discharges, and agricultural runoff, are continuously released into freshwater environments, turning them into reservoirs that contribute to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. Thus, it is essential to understand the impacts of antibiotic residues on aquatic organisms, especially microalgae and cyanobacteria, due to their crucial roles as primary producers in the ecosystem. This review summarizes the effects of antibiotics on major biological processes in freshwater microalgae and cyanobacteria, including photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and the metabolism of macromolecules. Their adaptive mechanisms to antibiotics exposure, such as biodegradation, bioadsorption, and bioaccumulation, are also discussed. Moreover, this review highlights the important factors affecting the antibiotic removal pathways by these organisms, which will promote the use of microalgae-based technology for the removal of antibiotics. Finally, we offer some perspectives on the opportunities for further studies and applications.

A rod-shaped, non-motile, Gram-negative bacterium, strain RS28T, was isolated from rice straw used as material for periphyton growth. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain RS28T was affiliated with the genus Mucilaginibacter and had the highest sequence similarity to Mucilaginibacter ginkgonis HMF7856T (96.47 %) and Mucilaginibacter polytrichastri DSM 26907T (96.12 %). Strain RS28T was found to grow at pH 5.5-8.0, 17-40 °C and in the presence of 0-1.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain RS28T contained summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids (> 10.0 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids, two unidentified aminophospholipids, three unidentified aminolipids and one unidentified lipid. The respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7. The genomic DNA G+C content was 44.7 mol%. Strain RS28T possessed six putative secondary metabolite gene clusters involved in the synthesis of resorcinol, NRPS-like, terpene, lassopeptide, T3PKS and arylpolyene. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and phylogenetic characteristics, strain RS28T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter straminoryzae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RS28T (=KCTC 92039T=LMG 32424T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterial strain, HBC54T, was isolated from periphyton during a Microcystis bloom. Based on the results of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HBC54T was closely related to Novosphingobium aerophilum 4Y4T (98.36 %), Novosphingobium aromaticivorans DSM 12444T (98.08 %), Novosphingobium huizhouense c7T (97.94 %), Novosphingobium percolationis c1T (97.65 %), Novosphingobium subterraneum DSM 12447T (97.58 %), Novosphingobium olei TW-4T (97.58 %) and Novosphingobium flavum UCT-28T (97.37 %). The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between HBC54T and its related type stains were below 78.97 and 23.7 %, which are lower than the threshold values for species delineation. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) were identified as C14 : 0 2-OH, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c) and the respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. The main polar lipids detected in the strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol and three unidentified phospholipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.8 mol%. Strain HBC54T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Novosphingobium, for which the name Novosphingobium cyanobacteriorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HBC54T (=KCTC 92033T=LMG 32427T).

A Gram-negative, red-colored, and rod-shaped bacterial strain, DH14T, was isolated from a eutrophic reservoir. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain DH14T was most closely related to Hymenobacter terrigena (98.3% similarity) and Hymenobacter terrae (98.1%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain DH14T and its related type strains were below 82.9% and 27.2%, respectively. Strain DH14T contained iso-C15:0 (32.6%), anteiso-C15:0 (14.0%), and summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω6c and/or C16:1 ω7c) (25.8%) as major cellular fatty acids. The main polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids, and one unidentified lipid. The respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The genomic DNA G + C content was 62.1%. These evidences support the classification of strain DH14T as a novel species in the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter cyanobacteriorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DH14T (= KCTC 92040T = LMG 32425T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain DH6T was isolated from fresh water of the Daechung Reservoir during the Microcystis bloom period. The strain grew at pH 6.0-8.5, at temperature 17-40 °C, and at 0-1% (w/v) NaCl concentration. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain DH6T exhibits the highest similarity with Panacibacter ginsenosidivorans Gsoil 1550T (96.6%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI), digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), and average amino acid identity (AAI) values of strain DH6T compared to its related type strains were below 74.2%, 22.3%, and 74.8%, respectively. The predominant fatty acids (> 5.0%) were identified as iso-C17:0 3-OH, iso-C13:0, iso-C15:0, C17:0 2-OH, iso-C11:0, anteiso-C13:0, and iso-C15:1 G. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, four unidentified aminolipids, and three unidentified lipids. The respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The genomic DNA G + C content was 42.6%. Collectively, strain DH6T should be classified as a novel species within the genus Panacibacter, for which the name Panacibacter microcysteis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DH6T (= KCTC 82471T = LMG 32426T).

A microcystin-degrading bacterial strain, Blastomonas fulva T2, was isolated from the culture of a microalgae Microcystis. The strain B. fulva T2 is Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic, non-spore-forming and phototrophic. The cells of B. fulva T2 are able to grow in ranges of temperature from 15 to 37 °C, with a pH of 6 to 8 and a salinity of 0 to 1% NaCl. Here, we sequenced the complete genome of B. fulva T2, aiming to better understand the evolutionary biology and the function of the genus Blastomonas at the molecular level. The complete genome of B. fulva T2 contained a circular chromosome (3,977,381 bp) with 64.3% GC content and a sizable plasmid (145.829 bp) with 60.7% GC content which comprises about 3.5% of the total genetic content. A total of 3842 coding genes, including 46 tRNAs and 6 rRNAs, were predicted in the genome. The genome contains genes for glycolysis, citric acid cycle, Entner-Doudoroff pathways, photoreaction center and bacteriochlorophylla synthesis. A 7.9 K gene cluster containing mlrA, mlrB, mlrC and mlrD1,2,3,4 of microcystin-degrading enzymes was identified. Notably, eight different efflux pumps categorized into RND, ABC and MFS types have been identified in the genome of strain T2. Our findings should provide new insights of the alternative reaction pathway as well as the enzymes which mediated the degradation of microcystin by bacteria, as well as the evolution, architectures, chemical mechanisms and physiological roles of the new bacterial multidrug efflux system.

Biological control agents including microbes and their products have been studied as sustainable crop protection strategies. Although aquatic microalgae have been recently introduced as a biological control agent, the underlying molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying biological control by microalga Chlorella fusca. Foliar application of C. fusca elicits induced resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 that activates plant immunity rather than direct antagonism. To understand the basis of C. fusca-triggered induced resistance at the transcriptional level, we conducted RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis. RNA-seq data showed that, upon pathogen inoculation, C. fusca treatment primed the expression of cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases, WRKY transcription factor genes, and salicylic acid and jasmonic acid signalling-related genes. Intriguingly, the application of C. fusca primed pathogen-associated molecular pattern -triggered immunity, characterized by reactive oxygen species burst and callose deposition, upon flagellin 22 treatment. The attempts to find C. fusca determinants allowed us to identify d-lactic acid secreted in the supernatant of C. fusca as a defence priming agent. This is the first report of the mechanism of innate immune activation by aquatic microalga Chlorella in higher plants.

Cryptosporidium parvum is a highly prevalent zoonotic and anthroponotic protozoan parasite that causes a diarrheal syndrome in children and neonatal livestock, culminating in growth retardation and mortalities. Despite the high prevalence of C. parvum, there are no fully effective and safe drugs for treating infections, and there is no vaccine. We have previously reported that the bacterial-like C. parvum lactate dehydrogenase (CpLDH) enzyme is essential for survival, virulence and growth of C. parvum in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, we screened compound libraries and identified inhibitors against the enzymatic activity of recombinant CpLDH protein in vitro. We tested the inhibitors for anti-Cryptosporidium effect using in vitro infection assays of HCT-8 cells monolayers and identified compounds NSC158011 and NSC10447 that inhibited the proliferation of intracellular C. parvum in vitro, with IC50 values of 14.88 and 72.65 µM, respectively. At doses tolerable in mice, we found that both NSC158011 and NSC10447 consistently significantly reduced the shedding of C. parvum oocysts in infected immunocompromised mice's feces, and prevented intestinal villous atrophy as well as mucosal erosion due to C. parvum. Together, our findings have unveiled promising anti-Cryptosporidium drug candidates that can be explored further for the development of the much needed novel therapeutic agents against C. parvum infections.

The class Oligohymenophorea is one of the most diverse assemblage of ciliated protists, which are particularly important in fundamental biological studies including understanding the evolutionary relationships among the lineages. Phylogenetic relationships within the class remain largely elusive, especially within the subclass Peniculia, which contains the long-standing problematic taxa Urocentrum and Paranassula. In the present study, we sequenced the genomes and/or transcriptomes of six non-culturable oligohymenophoreans using single-cell sequencing techniques. Phylogenomic analysis was performed based on expanded taxon sampling of 85 taxa, including 157 nuclear genes encoding 36,953 amino acids. The results indicate that: (1) urocentrids form an independent branch that is sister to the clade formed by Scuticociliatia and Hymenostomatia, which, together with the morphological data, supports the establishment of a new subclass, Urocentria n. subcl., within Oligohymenophorea; (2) phylogenomic analysis and ortholog comparison reveal a close relationship between Paranassula and peniculines, providing corroborative evidence for removing Paranassula from Nassulida and elevating it as an order, Paranassulida, within the subclass Peniculia; (3) based on the phylogenomic analyses and morphological data, we hypothesize that Peritrichia is the earliest diverging clade within Oligohymenophorea while Scuticociliatia and Hymenostomatia share the most common ancestor, followed successively by Urocentria and Peniculia. In addition, stop codon analyses indicate that oligohymenophoreans widely use UGA as the stop codon, while UAR are reassigned to glutamate (peritrichs) or glutamine (others), supporting the evolutionary hypothesis.

Harmful algal blooms caused by Cochlodinium polykrikoides result in enormous economic damage to the aquaculture industry. Biological control methods have attracted wide attention due to their environmental-friendliness. In this study, a novel algicidal bacterium, designated strain M26A2MT, was determined for its taxonomic position and was evaluated for its potential to mitigate C. polykrikoides blooms. Strain M26A2MT exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of Planktotalea lamellibrachiae (97.3%), Halocynthiibacter namhaensis (97.2%), Pseudohalocynthiibacter aestuariivivens (96.8%) and Halocynthiibacter arcticus (96.4%) in the family Rhodobacteraceae. The predominant fatty acids were C10 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified lipids. Q-10 was the respiratory quinone. Strain M26A2MT exerted significant algicidal activity against C. polykrikoides cells by destroying the membrane integrity and the photosynthetic system. Our findings suggest that strain M26A2MT shows a high potential to control outbreaks of C. polykrikoides. Based on the polyphasic characterization, strain M26A2MT is considered to represent a novel species within a novel genus of the family Rhodobacteraceae, for which the name Cochlodiniinecator piscidefendens gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M26A2MT (=KCTC 82083T=JCM 34119T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, non-motile bacterial strain, designated M5A1MT, was isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea of the Republic of Korea. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain M5A1MT was closely related to Mariniflexile gromovii KMM 6038T (95.3 %), Mariniflexile fucanivorans SW5T (95.2 %), Mariniflexile soesokkakense RSSK-9T (95.1 %), Yeosuana aromativorans GW1-1T (94.6 %) and Confluentibacter lentus HJM-3T (94.6 %). Genome-based phylogenetic analyses revealed that strain M5A1MT formed a distinct cluster with the type strains of the genus Mariniflexile. The major cellular fatty acid constituents (>5 % of the total fatty acids) were iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C16:03-OH and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The respiratory quinone was identified as MK-6. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified polar lipid. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain M5A1MT was determined to be 37.7 mol%. On the basis of its phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain M5A1MT is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Mariniflexile, for which the name Mariniflexile maritimum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M5A1MT (=KCTC 72895T=JCM 33982T).

A novel bacterium, strain SJAQ100T, was isolated from a freshwater aquarium and was characterized taxonomically and phylogenetically. Strain SJAQ100T was a Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium. The strain grew optimally with 0 % NaCl and at 25-37 °C on Reasoner's 2A agar. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain SJAQ100T clustered with members of Burkholderiales incertae sedis in the order Burkholderiales, but sequence similarities to known species were less than 96.5 %. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SJAQ100T was 71.2 mol%. Genomic comparisons of strain SJAQ100T with species in the order Burkholderiales were made using the Genome-to-Genome Distance Calculator, average nucleotide identity and average amino acid identity analyses (values indicated ≤22.1, ≤78.1, and ≤68.1 % respectively). Strain SJAQ100T contained C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c as major fatty acids and Q-8 as the major quinone. The major polyamines were putrescine and cadaverine. Strain SJAQ100T contained phosphatidylethanolamine and diphosphatidylglycerol as major polar lipids. Based on the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic results, strain SJAQ100T represents a novel genus and species, Aquariibacter albus gen. nov., sp. nov., which belongs to order Burkholderiales and the class Betaproteobacteria. The type strain is SJAQ100T (=KCTC 72203T=CGMCC 1.18869T=MCC 4385T).

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the long-term outcome of patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and a chronic total occlusion (CTO) in a non-infarct-related artery (IRA) and the risk factors for mortality. METHODS: The enrolled cohort comprised 323 patients with STEMI and multivessel diseases (MVD) that received a primary percutaneous coronary intervention between January 2008 and November 2013. The patients were divided into two groups: the CTO group (n = 97) and the non-CTO group (n = 236). The long-term major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) experienced by each group were compared. RESULTS: The rates of all-cause mortality and MACCE were significantly higher in the CTO group than they were in the non-CTO group. Cox regression analysis showed that an age ≥ 65 years (OR = 3.94, 95% CI: 1.47-10.56, P = 0.01), a CTO in a non-IRA(OR = 5.09, 95% CI: 1.79 ~ 14.54, P < 0.01), an in-hospital Killip class ≥ 3 (OR = 4.32, 95% CI: 1.71 ~ 10.95, P < 0.01), and the presence of renal insufficiency (OR = 5.32, 95% CI: 1.49 ~ 19.01, P = 0.01), stress ulcer with gastraintestinal bleeding (SUB) (OR = 6.36, 95% CI: (1.45 ~ 28.01, P = 0.01) were significantly related the 10-year mortality of patients with STEMI and MVD; an in-hospital Killip class ≥ 3 (OR = 2.97,95% CI:1.46 ~ 6.03, P < 0.01) and the presence of renal insufficiency (OR = 5.61, 95% CI: 1.19 ~ 26.39, P = 0.03) were significantly related to the 10-year mortality of patients with STEMI and a CTO. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of a CTO in a non-IRA, an age ≥ 65 years, an in-hospital Killip class ≥ 3, and the presence of renal insufficiency, and SUB were independent risk predictors for the long-term mortality of patients with STEMI and MVD; an in-hospital Killip class ≥ 3 and renal insufficiency were independent risk predictors for the long-term mortality of patients with STEMI and a CTO.

Chlorinated contaminants are a cause of significant concern in the development of municipal solid waste (MSW) thermal treatment techniques. This study investigates the efficacy of two calcium (Ca)-based in-furnace additives, calcium oxide (CaO), and calcined dolomite (CD), at reducing the levels of chlorinated contaminants during MSW thermal treatment. The results reveal that Ca-based additives could effectively reduce the chlorine (Cl) content by more than 76.8% and 37.3% in the gas and tar phases, respectively. The total concentration and the international total equivalent (I-TEQ) value of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs) were significantly higher under the incineration condition than pyrolysis and gasification conditions. Adding CaO could reduce the total concentration and the I-TEQ value of PCDD/Fs by more than 43.4% and 36.7%, respectively. The reduction effect on PCDD/Fs was more significant in the gaseous phase and the tar phase than the solid phase. CD was more effective than CaO at reducing the chlorinated contaminants, including hydrogen chloride, Cl in the tar phase, and PCDD/Fs. Thus, adding Ca-based sorbents in the furnace during MSW pyrolysis and gasification can effectively reduce PCDD/Fs generation. Based on the experimental results, the mechanism of Ca-based sorbents on the high-temperature homogeneous reaction of PCDD/Fs formation was analysed.

Kitchen waste (KW) has gradually become a prominent problem in municipal solid waste treatment. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising method used to make fuel oil from food and KW. However, the upgrading of bio-oil is particularly important for the sake of industrial reuse. In this study, the KW from university restaurants was subjected to HTL experiments in order to study theoretical feasibility. With the change of conversion temperature and residence time, the optimal conversion working conditions in this study were determined according to the quality and yield of the bio-oil. Moreover, the bio-oil upgrading effects of different additives (hydrogen chloride, sodium hydroxide, and iron(III) chloride) on the HTL of KW were studied. Alkaline additives have an inhibitory effect on the bio-oil yield and positive effect on coke yield. Acidic additives and iron (Fe)-containing additives can promote bio-oil yield. As an important aspect of upgrading, the effect on the nitrogen content of bio-oil with additives was revealed. The alkaline and Fe-containing additives have little effect on reducing the viscosity of the bio-oil while with the appropriate ratio (2.5 mol•kg-1) of acidic additives to the raw material, the static and dynamic fluidity of the oil phase products are reduced to about 0.1 Pa•s.
