RESUMO

PURPOSE: Several preliminary studies suggest dietary guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) might impact methyl group availability and/or methylation biomarkers, fueling ongoing debates. This study aimed to explore the relationship between dietary GAA intake and plasma indicators of the methylation cycle in individuals aged one year and older, using data from the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: Dietary information was obtained from individuals who completed a 24-hour Dietary Recall, with total daily intake of GAA calculated by aggregating all relevant food items. Relevant variables related to the methylation cycle, such as red blood cell (RBC) folate and serum folate, vitamin B12, total homocysteine (tHCy), and methylmalonic acid (MMA), were identified from the NHANES 2001-2002 laboratory assessments. RESULTS: A total of 9,115 individuals (51.3% females) were included in the final analysis. Linear regression unveiled a significant association between higher GAA intake and diminished RBC folate (p < 0.001), serum folate (p < 0.001), and MMA levels (p = 0.007). It also revealed an elevation in tHCy levels with increased GAA intake (p < 0.001). These associations remained significant even after adjusting for demographic variables and dietary factors pertinent to the methylation cycle (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that dietary exposure to GAA (resulting in conversion to creatine) could be considered a nutritional factor associated with the consumption of methyl groups in the general population.

RESUMO

Grape processing by-products (particularly grape pomace) are known to contain high amounts of phenolic compounds. To improve the extraction of phenols from this by-product, it is necessary to develop a method and set and model optimal conditions for their extraction. By applying the design of experiments (DoE) approach, optimal experimental factors of Ultrasound-assisted extraction (USAE) were determined to obtain grape pomace extracts with a satisfactory yield of phenols anthocyanins, as well as extracts with high antioxidant capacity using reagents approved in the food industry. Initial method optimization covered two experimental factors: solvent concentration and the weight ratio of the sample and solvent using fixed USAE conditions from literature. For the final method optimization, the three investigated experimental factors were: pH value, the temperature of extraction, and extraction time. The optimal experimental conditions for the development of the method were 55% ethanol, sample/solvent ratio 1:40, pH 4.5, T 55 °C, and 30 min. Depending on the primary goal of the extraction process (the antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, content of individual phenols, or content of individual anthocyanins), these parameters can easily be modified to obtain the desired recovery. RESUMO

In this study we investigated resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) solubilization with sodium 3α,12 α-dihydroxy-7-oxo-5 ß-cholanoate (S7-OD) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The investigation was aimed at determining whether large spherical micelles (SDS) or small longitudinal micelles (S7-OD) are more convenient for incorporation of resveratrol. Also, we studied resveratrol behavior in mixed micelles with mentioned surfactants using spectroflourimetric method as well as the effects of sodium chloride and urea on resveratrol solubilization capacity in the applied surfactants. Resveratrol solubilization curve was different in the investigated surfactants. Resveratrol solubilization curve for sodium 3α,12 α-dihydroxy-7-oxo-5 ß-cholanoate at concentration 0.9 CMC reached saturation level of 60% dissolved resveratrol. The curve for sodium dodecyl sulfate was linear within the whole range of the investigated concentration; resveratrol solubilization rate reached 13% at 2 CMC. In S7-OD, NaCl increased capacity of resveratrol solubilization up to 1.4 CMC surfactant concentration, whilst maximum level of dissolved resveratrol (90%) was observed at 0.9 CMC. In SDS, NaCl decreased resveratrol solubilization capacity. Urea reduced resveratrol solubilization rate in sodium 3α ,12 α-dihydroxy-7-oxo-5 ß-cholanoate, whereas it had inverse effect in sodium dodecyl sulfate. The obtained results strongly suggest that structure, that is, shape, of the surfactant micelles significantly affects their capacity of resveratrol solubilization. Also, presence of NaCl and urea influences solubilization capacities of investigated surfactants.

RESUMO

Herb-drug interactions are an important safety concern and this study was conducted regarding the interaction between the natural top-selling antidepressant remedy Hypericum perforatum (Hypericaceae) and conventional drugs. This study examined the influence of acute pretreatment with different extracts of Hypericum perforatum from Serbia on pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, impairment of motor coordination caused by diazepam and paracetamol pharmacokinetics in mice. Ethanolic extract, aqueous extract, infusion, tablet and capsule of Hypericum perforatum were used in this experiment. The profile of Hypericum perforatum extracts as well as paracetamol plasma concentration was determined using RP-HPLC analysis. By quantitative HPLC analysis of active principles, it has been proven that Hypericum perforatum ethanolic extract has the largest content of naphtodianthrones: hypericin (57.77 µg/mL) and pseudohypericin (155.38 µg/mL). Pretreatment with ethanolic extract of Hypericum perforatum potentiated the hypnotic effect of pentobarbital and impairment of motor coordination caused by diazepam to the greatest extent and also increased paracetamol plasma concentration in comparison to the control group. These results were in correlation with naphtodianthrone concentrations. The obtained results have shown a considerable influence of Hypericum perforatum on pentobarbital and diazepam pharmacodynamics and paracetamol pharmacokinetics.

RESUMO

Low creatine availability may be linked to an elevated risk of neuronal damage, yet this association remains inadequately explored at the population level. Utilizing 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, the current study found a negative correlation between dietary creatine intake and serum levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL; a biomarker for neuronal damage) in a cohort of 1912 individuals (52.2% females) aged 20-75 years. This inverse association persisted even after adjusting for other nutritional variables known to influence neuronal viability. The observed pattern, where increased dietary creatine intake was associated with reduced circulating NfL levels, suggests potential protective effects of creatine against neuronal injury.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of medium-term supplementation with dihydrogen and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) on mitochondrial biomarkers, brain metabolism, and cognition in elderly individuals diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. DESIGN: A parallel-group, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind experimental design, maintaining a 1:1 allocation ratio between the experimental group (receiving the dihydrogen-producing minerals and PQQ) and the control group (receiving the placebo) throughout the trial. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-four elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment (mean age 71.9 ± 3.8 years; 28 females) voluntarily provided written consent to participate in this trial. Participants were assigned in a double-blind parallel-group design to receive either a dihydrogen-PQQ mixture (Alpha Hope®, CalerieLife, Irvine, CA) or placebo twice daily for a 6-week intervention period. METHODS: The primary endpoint was the change in serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) from baseline to the 6-week follow-up; secondary outcomes included cognitive function indices, specific metabolites in brain tissue, brain oxygenation, and the prevalence and severity of side effects. Interaction effects (time vs. intervention) were evaluated using two-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Friedman's 2-way ANOVA by ranks, for normally distributed data with homogeneous variances and non-homogeneous variances, respectively. RESULTS: Dihydrogen-PQQ resulted in a significant elevation in serum BDNF levels at the six-week follow-up (P = 0.01); conversely, no changes in BDNF levels were observed in the placebo group throughout the study duration (P = 0.27). A non-significant trend in the impact of interventions on BDNF levels was observed (treatment vs. time interaction, P = 0.14), suggesting a tendency for dihydrogen-PQQ to upregulate BDNF levels compared to the placebo. A significant interaction effect was observed for the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog) scores in the orientation domain (P = 0.03), indicating the superiority of dihydrogen-PQQ over placebo in enhancing this cognitive aspect. Cerebral oxygenation saturation exhibited a significant increase following the administration of the dihydrogen-PQQ mixture, from 48.4 ± 7.2% at baseline to 52.8 ± 6.6% at 6-week post-administration (P = 0.005). In addition, brain N-acetyl aspartate levels significantly increased at seven out of thirteen locations post-intervention in participants receiving the mixture (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Despite the limited number of participants included in the study for interpreting clinical parameters, the dihydrogen-PQQ mixture blend shows promise as a potential dietary intervention for enhancing mental orientation and brain metabolism in individuals with age-related mild cognitive decline.

RESUMO

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that can affect almost any organ. Although the acute form can have spontaneous regression, a certain number of patients can have a chronic form, which leads to an increase in mortality and a decrease in the quality of life. Considering that the risk factors are still unknown, we wanted to compare the characteristics of patients with acute and chronic forms of sarcoidosis in Serbia in order to determine significant differences between them with hopes of contributing to everyday clinical practice. A total of 2380 patients treated in our clinic were enrolled in this study. They were separated into the following two groups: 1126 patients with acute form and 1254 patients with chronic form. They were further compared by gender, smoking status, radiological status, exposition, biomarkers for sarcoidosis, organ involvement, and other comorbidities; the distribution of patients according to regions of Serbia was also noted. Statistical significance was found in radiological findings (p < 0.001), biomarkers (calcium in 24 h urine p < 0.001; chitotriosidase p = 0.001), and the affliction of organs (p < 0.001). The differences noted in this paper could help improve our understanding of this disease.

RESUMO

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is an important legume that is also known as a rich source of isoflavones, which are compounds with mild estrogenic activity. Therefore, this plant is often used as a raw material in the production of dietary supplements recommended in menopause. Many factors can influence isoflavone content, but those genetically related are considered to be the most important. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical profile of different plant parts of 30 red clover genotypes grouped according to ploidy and country of seed origin by analyzing the content of dominant isoflavones, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity. It was found that there are significant differences in the examined traits among plant parts. Red clover leaves had the highest total isoflavone content, with biochanin A as the dominant compound, while flower extracts had the highest TPC and antioxidant activity. Diploid and tetraploid genotypes were significantly different concerning the content of daidzein, genistein, formononetin and TPC with higher quantities in tetraploid samples. On the other hand, seed origin was not a useful separating factor for the analyzed samples. The results of this research indicate that ploidy, as a previously poorly studied factor, could influence isoflavone content in red clover.

RESUMO

Supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids is considered a valuable strategy to supply the low intake of these fatty acids. Thus, the safety of the supplements is an important milestone. Because of that, we analyzed 20 unflavored supplements sold in the French market for fatty acid and triglyceride composition, for EPA and DHA, and for tocol content, as well as for oxidative status. This study found that only 2.5% of the supplements did not meet their label claims for omega-3 content. TAG analysis showed high variability among the triglyceride distribution, and the same trend was also noticed for the tocol content; in fact, a high variability of the distribution of the six tocols (four tocopherols and two tocotrienols) was found among the samples. Of the tested products, all of them complied with peroxide value, p-anisidine value, and Totox values established by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) and were not oxidized.

RESUMO

Background: Immune dysregulation and associated inefficient anti-viral immunity during Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause tissue and organ damage which shares many similarities with pathogenetic processes in systemic autoimmune diseases. In this study, we investigate wide range autoimmune and immunoserological markers in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: Study included 51 patients with confirmed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 infection and hospitalized due to COVID-19 pneumonia. Wide spectrum autoantibodies associated with different autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases were analyzed and correlated with clinical and laboratory features and pneumonia severity. Results: Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) positivity was found in 19.6%, anti-cardiolipin IgG antibodies (aCL IgG) in 15.7%, and anti-cardiolipin IgM antibodies (aCL IgM) in 7.8% of patients. Positive atypical x anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (xANCA) were detected in 10.0% (all negative for Proteinase 3 and Myeloperoxidase) and rheumatoid factor was found in 8.2% of patients. None of tested autoantibodies were associated with disease or pneumonia severity, except for aCL IgG being significantly associated with higher pneumonia severity index (p = 0.036). Patients with reduced total serum IgG were more likely to require non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) (p < 0.0001). Serum concentrations of IgG (p = 0.003) and IgA (p = 0.032) were significantly lower in this group of patients. Higher total serum IgA (p = 0.009) was associated with mortality, with no difference in serum IgG (p = 0.115) or IgM (p = 0.175). Lethal outcome was associated with lower complement C4 (p = 0.013), while there was no difference in complement C3 concentration (p = 0.135). Conclusion: Increased autoimmune responses are present in moderate and severe COVID-19. Severe pneumonia is associated with the presence of aCL IgG, suggesting their role in disease pathogenesis. Evaluation of serum immunoglobulins and complement concentration could help assess the risk of non-invasive mechanical ventilation NIMV and poor outcome.

RESUMO

Objectives: Considering high prevalence of use of dietary supplements and their easy access on the internet, the aim of this research was to examine and assess the prevalence of the internet marketing of heart-protective supplements as the most popular supplements of today, and to investigate the quality and quantity of information that are available to consumers on the sale websites. Design: Three major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) and keywords "cardiovascular supportive supplements online buy" were used to identify websites that sell cardioprotective dietary supplements. Content of first 50 listed websites in each engine was evaluated for its compliance with regulatory acts while information about supplements' efficacy and safety was compared with the results of the latest scientific research. Results: Of a total of 150 listed websites, 89 selling supplements for the specific indication underwent further analysis. The most commonly registered cardioprotective dietary supplements on the internet were supplements based on omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3) (57 websites, 64.05%). Related to the websites selling omega-3 supplements, risk reduction claims were presented at 23 (40.35%), whereas structure or function claims were present at 50 (87.72%) analyzed websites, but followed with Food and Drug Administration disclaimer only on 68.00% of them. Information about adverse effects were rarely pointed out (1 website, 1.75%) unlike warnings, which were significantly more available to consumers (38, 66.67%). Conclusions: According to obtained results, most of the analyzed websites that sell omega-3 supplements did not contain all important medical information required by Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. Since use of internet marketing is in expansion and since consumers have no access to relevant medical information about dietary supplements on the selling websites, there is a clear need for better quality control of websites and greater public awareness of these widely used products.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Lamotrigine (LTG, 3,5-diamino-6- (2,3-dichlorphenyl)-,2,4-triazine) is an antiepileptic drug used mainly for partial and generalized seizures. The efficacy of LTG in treating resistant partial seizures was optimized when it was combined with valproate (VPA). The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of VPA on LTG pharmacokinetics in epileptic patients. METHODS: 38 patients were randomly divided into two groups, one given LTG (n = 18) and the other given LTG + VPA(n = 20). The first group consisted of 10 females (32.50 +/- 12.46 years old, 67.80 +/- 15.18 kg) and 8 males (24.88 +/- 8.92 years old, 69.88 +/- 11.41 kg) and the second group consisted of 9 females (28.33 +/- 6.52 years old, 62.89 +/- 13.28 kg) and 11 males (37.64 +/- 10.43 years old, 85.64 +/- 15.4 kg). Patients were either administered an oral dose of LTG (157 +/- 74 mg/day) or LTG + VPA (150 +/- 83.11 mg/day & 774 +/- 330 mg/day respectively). LTG steady state serum concentrations were determined 1.5-8 h post dose. Analyses were performed by a validated HPLC method. RESULTS: LTG serum concentrations were increased significantly from 4.67 +/- 3.66 and 9.56 +/- 5.27 microg/ml by concomitant administration of VPA. DISCUSSION: The inhibition of LTG metabolism by VPA was shown to have a marked effect on LTG kinetics. This inhibitory effect was complicated further by inter-patients variation in body weight and gender. This emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring of LTG serum concentrations on an individual basis. Accordingly, if the use of potentially interacting drugs cannot be avoided, adverse reactions can be minimized by dose adjustments guided by careful monitoring of clinical response and measurement of LTG serum concentrations.

RESUMO

Isoflavones are a group of phytoestrogens, naturally-occurring substances important for their role in human health. Legumes, particularly soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), are the richest source of isoflavones in human diet. Since there is not much current data on genetics of isoflavones in soybean, particularly in the aglycone form, elucidation of the mode of inheritance is necessary in order to design an efficient breeding strategy for the development of high-isoflavone soybean genotypes. Based on the isoflavone content in 23 samples of soybeans from four different maturity groups (00, 0, I and II), three crosses were made in order to determine the inheritance pattern and increase the content of total isoflavones and their aglycone form. Genotype with the lowest total isoflavone content (NS-L-146) was crossed with the low- (NS Zenit), medium (NS Maximus), and high- (NS Virtus) isoflavone genotypes. There were no significant differences in the total isoflavone content (TIF) between F2 populations, and there was no transgression among genotypes within the populations. Each genotype within all three populations had a higher TIF value than the lower parent (NS-L-146), while genotypes with a higher TIF value than the better parent were found only in the NS-L-146 × NS Zenit cross. However, significant differences in the aglycone ratio (ratio of aglycone to glycone form of isoflavones) were found between the populations. The highest aglycone ratio was found in the NS-L-146 × NS Maximus cross. The results indicate that the genetic improvement for the trait is possible.

RESUMO

In this paper, the study of antioxidant activity and phenolic composition of three different extracts (EtOAc, n-BuOH and H(2)O) of field horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) is presented. The antioxidant activity has been evaluated measuring the total reducing power (expressed by Ascorbate Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity - AEAC), inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and free radical scavenging capacity (RSC) towards 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH radical) and nitric oxide (NO), respectively. In addition, the total flavonoid content (TFC) and phenolic constituents of each extract have been determined. The results obtained show that the highest RSC regarding both DPPH and NO radicals is expressed by EtOAc extract (EC(50)=2.37 microg/mL and EC(50)=90.07 microg/mL, respectively), and the lowest by H(2)O extract (EC(50)=37.2 microg/mL and EC(50)>333.33 microg/mL, respectively). n-BuOH extract showed the highest total reducing power (AEAC=13.40 microg/mL). Differences in the phenolic composition of examined extracts are found comparing the HPLC chemical profiles. Although, isoquercitrin is the main flavonoid in both EtOAc and n-BuOH extracts, a considerable amount of di-E-caffeoyl-meso-tartaric acid was presented in the n-BuOH extract. In H(2)O extract high content of phenolic acids and low percentage of flavonoids were detected.

RESUMO

The antioxidant activity and contents of various polyphenol classes in the seeds of seven soybean varieties of different seed color and one yellow seed cultivar, representing a reference genotype, were evaluated. Total polyphenols and tannins were determined after extraction of plant material with 70% aqueous acetone, and total flavonoids were extracted with methanol and acetic acid, whereas anthocyanins were extracted with 20% aqueous ethanol. In addition, isoflavone content and composition were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Antioxidant activity of seed extracts was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity assay. A positive linear correlation between antioxidant activity and contents of total polyphenols and anthocyanins was established. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in the extracts of black and brown varieties, which also showed high levels of all polyphenol classes examined. Yellow seed had the highest total isoflavone content (3.62 mg/g of dry material). The highest concentration of total daidzein was determined in black seeds (>2.0 mg/g of dry material), and the highest total glycitein and genistein contents occurred in the yellow cultivar (0.53 and 1.49 mg/g of dry material, respectively). According to our results, varieties of black and brown seeds could be of special interest not only for their large content of total polyphenols, ranging from 4.94 to 6.22 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of dry material, but also for their high content of natural antioxidants such as anthocyanins.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since 2005, the antiepileptic drug lamotrigine has been present in the market in various generic products, in addition to the original brand of Lamictal®. The linear pharmacokinetics and wide therapeutic window of lamotrigine enable seizure-free patients to easily switch from brand to generic antiepileptic drugs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the extent of variations in lamotrigine serum concentrations between two immediate-release tablet formulations. Data were compared with in vitro difference and similarity tests on dissolution profiles of the two formulations. METHODS: Dissolution characteristics of formulations A (reference) and B (test) were evaluated at three points spanning the physiologic pH range (pH 1.2, pH 4.5, pH 6.8). A model-independent approach of difference (f1) and similarity (f2) tests were applied to dissolution data. A clinical study was performed with 16 patients who were divided into two groups - one group received formulation A (n = 9) and the other received formulation B (n = 7). Lamotrigine steady-state concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography on a reverse-phase column. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in lamotrigine serum concentrations between the two groups, although formulation B had slightly higher mean concentration values (formulation A: 3.97 ± 4.1 µg/mL; formulation B: 5.78 ± 2.7 µg/mL). Dissolution profiles of the two formulations were similar in the pH 1.2 dissolution medium; however, the dissolution profiles of formulation B were outside the dissolution limit (≥85% at 15 minutes) in the pH 4.5 and 6.8 dissolution media. CONCLUSIONS: No significant changes in the serum concentrations of lamotrigine were seen between the two investigated formulations. There is no evidence to suggest that the differences in dissolution profiles at pH 4.5 and pH 6.8 affect the therapeutic efficacy of the formulations. It is evident that the doses of test formulation given to the patients were higher as a consequence of common assumption that generic products have a lower absorption rate, which is proven unnecessary in this study. This investigation was a pilot study and thus further investigations with a larger sample size are necessary to determine if there is a connection between dissolution profiles and the therapeutic effect of investigated formulations.

RESUMO

In order to discover an agent that can prevent spasm of the human radial artery, the aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of the K(+) channel opener, pinacidil, on contractions in the radial artery. Contractions of the radial artery were evoked by exogenously applied noradrenaline or by electrical field stimulation (EFS, 20Hz, neurogenic). Pinacidil induced concentration-dependent inhibition of both EFS- and noradrenaline-evoked contractions of the radial artery. Glibenclamide, a selective blocker of ATP-sensitive K(+) channels (Kir6.x containing subunit) antagonized in the same manner the pinacidil-induced inhibition of neurogenic contractions and contractions evoked by exogenous noradrenaline. The inhibition of pinacidil relaxation by tetraethylammonium (TEA), a blocker of Ca-sensitive K(+) (K(Ca)) channels, was more pronounced in EFS-contracted preparations. A blocker of voltage-sensitive K(+) (K(V)) channels, 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), inhibited pinacidil relaxation only in EFS-contracted preparations. In order to test the presence of different K(+) channels, immunohistochemistry of K(+) channels expression in the radial artery was performed. The vascular wall of the human radial artery showed variable positivity with the following applied antibodies: Kv1.2, Kv1.3, Kir6.1, and K(Ca)1.1. The antibodies against Kv1.6, Kv2.1, and Kir6.2 channel subunits were completely negative. These results suggest that the inhibitory effect of pinacidil on contractions of the human radial artery might be postsynaptic and associated with opening of smooth muscle Kir6.1-containing K(ATP) channels. TEA- and 4-AP-sensitive K(+) channels may also contribute to pinacidil effect in the human radial artery.

RESUMO

Twenty soybean cultivars, originating from the United States, Russia, Serbia, and China, were analyzed for their isoflavone composition, total polyphenolic content, and antioxidant activity. Isoflavones were extracted by aqueous methanol (80%) and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography/diode array detection. Precision and linearity of the applied method were within the standard limits of validation. The highest and the lowest total isoflavone contents were 4.59 and 1.45 mg/g of dried soybean weight, respectively. A significant difference (P < .05) was found in isoflavone concentration among the different cultivars, but it was observed that origin is not a significant factor that could influence isoflavone content in soybeans. Total polyphenolic content varied between 2.13 and 3.45 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of dried soybean weight. The free radical scavenging activity of soybean extracts assayed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl in terms of 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) ranged from 1.40 to 3.35 mg/mL. Negative correlation between total polyphenolic content and IC(50) was observed, but there was no correlation between total isoflavone content and IC(50). On the basis of this study, soybean cultivars with larger potency for biological activity could be recognized.

RESUMO

Resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a phytoalexin produced by grapevines in response to fungal infection, particularly to Botrytis cinerea. It has been shown that it possess various biological effects such as prevention of cardiovascular diseases and anti-inflammatory and anticancerogenic properties. Red wines are a primary source of resveratrol. Although a number of investigations have focused on the determination of resveratrol in wines of different countries, there is no similar study about the wines produced in Serbia. As authors are aware, the only study concerning resveratrol content in wine in the Balkan region was conducted in Greece. In this study, the trans- and cis-resveratrol content in samples obtained from 18 commercial Serbian wines (10 red, 7 white, and 1 rose) were analyzed. Analyses were performed after solid-phase extraction by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detection system using an RP-C(18) column with gradient elution [solvent A: acetonitrile-acetic acid-water (20:2:78 v/v), solvent B: acetonitrile-acetic acid-water (90:2:8 v/v)]. Detection of trans- and cis-resveratrol was performed on 306 and 286 nm, respectively. It was clearly established that there was a presence of trans-resveratrol isomers in all analyzed wines (0.11-1.69 mg/L) except in one white wine. Cis-resveratrol was present in 12 from 18 samples in different amounts (0.12-1.49 mg/L).
