RESUMO

We investigated the physiology that underlies the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization on outcomes of interactions between plants. We grew Medicago truncatula A17 and its AM-defective mutant dmi1 in intragenotypic (two plants per pot of the same genotype, x2) or intergenotypic (one plant of each genotype, 1 + 1) combinations, inoculated or not with Rhizophagus irregularis (formerly Glomus intraradices) or Gigaspora margarita. We measured plant growth, colonization, contributions of AM and direct P uptake pathways using (32)P, and expression of plant Pi transporter genes at two levels of P supply. A17 (x2) responded positively to inoculation only at low P. The response was enhanced with 1 + 1 even at high P where colonization in A17 was reduced. With R. irregularis P uptake by the AM pathway was unaffected by P supply, whereas with G. margarita, the AM pathway was lower at high P, and direct uptake higher. Gene expression varied and was unrelated to P uptake through the two pathways. There was no evidence of plant control of P uptake via R. irregularis at high P but there was via G. margarita. Importantly, growth responses of plant genotypes grown alone did not predict outcomes of intergenotypic interactions.

We performed a field experiment to test whether the presence of litter produced by the dominant species in the first successional year affects the plant community structure in the following year. We removed the litter of Setaria faberii (the first-year dominant) in midfall, early spring, mid-spring, or late spring. Both the fall and early spring removal increased the biomass of Erigeron annuus, which became dominant, and reduced the biomass of S. faberii. In the fall-removal treatment more plants of E. annuus flowered, while early spring removal increased the biomass of rosettes (non-flowering individuals) at the end of the growing season. In the other treatments and in the control S. faberii retained dominance, but its biomass was the highest in mid-spring removal plots. The removal of litter of S. faberii in the fall and in early spring allowed E. annuus to pre-empt the site and dominate the community. When litter was not removed, it strongly hindered the growth of E. annuus, favoring S. faberii. These results highlight the importance of litter as a historical factor linking interactions across successive generations, and controlling the community structure.

Despite comparatively good rates of pollination and seed production, some populations of the endangered terrestrial orchid Caladenia rigida continue to decline. To determine whether seed quality may be limiting reproductive potential, we assessed seed viability among declining populations of C. rigida (in the southern part of its distribution) and among populations that are regarded as stable (in the northern part of its distribution). We also compared differences in seed viability to plant traits, population size and habitat characteristics (soil properties, canopy cover, presence of proximate vegetation). Seed capsules from southern populations were significantly smaller, with only 9% of seeds being viable, compared to 36% in capsules from northern populations. Soil phosphorus concentrations differed between regions, but other habitat characteristics did not correlate with seed viability. Using calculations based on seedling recruitment data from other Caladenia species, we predict that seed output is insufficient to ensure the long-term persistence of the smallest C. rigida populations.
