RESUMO

Counseling interventions with paranoid schizophrenics can be daunting. While chemical, directive, and behavioral controls often are considered important, nondirective counseling techniques used by the therapeutic staff may help schizophrenic patients explore their thoughts and feelings. Several nondirective concepts pioneered by Carl Rogers are examined. These methods, which represent basic concepts of the person-centered approach, are empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence. A brief illustration of an interaction with a patient diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic is presented to suggest the effectiveness of Rogerian counseling.

RESUMO

Viktor Frankl has written that people can survive in the most adverse of situations. He emphasized that the will to meaning has actual survival value. Frankl said people who were oriented toward the future or who had loved ones to see again were most likely to have survived the Holocaust. But is this belief valid? Does love have survival value? Six survivors of the Holocaust were interviewed to assess whether they experienced thoughts and feelings as those described by Frankl. Analysis of results from these interviews showed that love was important but so were other factors.

RESUMO

Clients in treatment for substance-related disorders are excellent candidates for discussing Frankl's concept of the existential vacuum as such people fill their existential vacuum with alcohol and other drugs. A keen therapist can make this connection and help clients fill their voids with meaningful activities.

RESUMO

Viktor Frankl's death in September of 1997 left a void in psychology and psychiatry. Frankl stressed that meaning and purpose are of paramount importance throughout people's lives. Frankl's own life was an example of his philosophy put into action.

RESUMO

Kovacs (1999) raises several important points in his discussion of logotherapy. The practical dimension (applicability) of logotherapy has always been its most valuable asset. Patients on their own may recognize voids in their lives even without having any explicit knowledge of Frankl's thought.

RESUMO

The Purpose-in-Life Test (PIL) was administered to a group of 118 elderly persons from three senior citizen centers. Data were obtained on religious denomination. Results suggested that whether a person was Protestant or Catholic had no significant effect on PIL scores, with mean scores almost identical. What seemed to be important was how meaningful spirituality was to the person. Those who scored high on an index of spirituality also scored high on the PIL.
