1. In recent months, several outbreaks with clinical signs of MDV-1 were reported in Iranian parent and laying hen farms, in addition to backyard chickens. Several meq gene sequences from these outbreaks were amplified and molecularly characterised.2. The meq protein sequences revealed three different sizes, namely the standard 339 aa, a shorter form of 338 aa lacking a proline residue at position 191, and a very short (vs) size of 265 aa. Based on sequence and size, the 265 aa meq has never been reported from international research groups before. The protein has only one PPPP repeat motif suggesting it belongs to a highly virulent strain.3. The standard meq sequences showed 100% BLAST identity to the vv+ isolate Polen5. However, the 338 aa form clustered to the clade usually reported from North America.4. This is the first report on genetic analysis of MDV-1 from Iran, but further study is required to obtain a better picture of the diversity and prevalence of different MDV-1 strains circulating in the country's farms, backyard poultry and other bird species.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Stroke symptoms in the absence of diagnosed stroke are common worldwide and associated with stroke risk factors and great impact on the physical and mental health functioning. The aim of this study was to assess, at the national level, the association of stroke symptoms with mental and physical health. METHODS: Quality of life was assessed using physical and mental component summary scores (PCS and MCS) of the Short Form 12v2 Health Survey in the Lebanese population. We assessed the differences in the mean PCS and MCS scores among asymptomatic individuals with no stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) history (n=1167), symptomatic individuals with no stroke/TIA history (n=125) and those with stroke/TIA history (n=46). Psychometric properties of the Lebanese version of the SF- 12v2 were evaluated using principal component analysis. RESULTS: Symptomatic individuals had an average PCS scores of 2.31 (95%CI: 0.75-3.88) points lower and those with stroke/TIA history had 3.26 (95%CI: 1.01-5.51) points lower when compared with asymptomatic individuals with no stroke/TIA history. Similarly, MCS scores for symptomatic individuals were 2.58 (95%CI: 1.02-4.13) points lower and those with stroke/TIA history had 3.28 (95%CI: 1.06-5.50) points lower than asymptomatic individuals. CONCLUSION: Physical and mental health functioning declined among symptomatic individuals and those with stroke/TIA history. Thus, frequent monitoring for the early detection of stroke symptoms may be recommended.

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection represent a clinical challenge because they encompass a broad neurological spectrum and may occur before the diagnosis of COVID-19. METHODS: In this monocentric retrospective case series, medical records from patients with acute neurological disorders associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection from medicine departments of an academic center in Paris area were collected between March 15th and May 15th 2020. Diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 was ascertained through specific RT-PCR in nasopharyngeal swabs or based on circulating serum IgG antibodies. RESULTS: Twenty-six patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection presented with neurological disorders: encephalitis (N=8), encephalopathy (N=6), cerebrovascular events (ischemic strokes N=4 and vein thromboses N=2), other central nervous system (CNS) disorders (N=4), and Guillain-Barré syndrome (N=2). The diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 was delayed on average 1.6 days after the onset of neurological disorder, especially in case of encephalitis 3.9 days, encephalopathy 1.0 day, and cerebrovascular event 2.7 days. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms that COVID-19 can yield a broad spectrum of neurological disorders. Because neurological presentations of COVID-19 often occur a few days before the diagnosis of SARS-COV-2 infection, clinicians should take preventive measures such as patient isolation and masks for any new admission to avoid nosocomial infections. Anti-SARS-CoV2 antibody detection in RT-PCR SARS CoV-2 negative suspected cases is useful to confirm a posteriori the diagnosis of atypical COVID-19 presentations.

Biomolecules in solutions subjected to extensional strain can form aggregates, which may be important for our understanding of pathologies involving insoluble protein structures where mechanical forces are thought to be causative (e.g., tau fibers in chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)). To examine the behavior of biomolecules in solution under mechanical strains requires applying rheological methods, often to very small sample volumes. There were two primary objectives in this investigation: (1) To probe flow-induced aggregation of proteins in microliter-sized samples and (2) To test the hypothesis that tau protein aggregates under extensional flow. Tau protein (isoform:3R 0 N; 36.7 kDa) was divided into 10 µl droplets and subjected to extensional strain in a modified tensiometer. Sixteen independent tests were performed where one test on a single droplet comprised three extensional events. To assess the rheological performance of the fluid/tau mixture, the diameter of the filament that formed during extension was tracked as function of time and analyzed for signs of aggregation (i.e., increased relaxation time). The results were compared to two molecules of similar and greater size (Polyethylene Oxide: PEO35, 35 kDa and PEO100, 100 kDa). Analysis showed that the tau protein solution and PEO35 are likely to have formed aggregates, albeit at relatively high extensional strain rates (∼10 kHz). The investigation demonstrates an extensional rheological method capable of determining the properties of protein solutions in µl volumes and that tau protein can aggregate when exposed to a single extensional strain with potentially significant biological implications.

This study developed a well-standardized and reproducible approach for micro-finite element (mFE) and homogenized-FE (hFE) analyses that can accurately predict the distal radius failure load using either mFE or hFE models when using the approaches and parameters developed in this study. INTRODUCTION: Micro-FE analyses based on high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT) images are frequently used to predict distal radius failure load. With the introduction of a second-generation HR-pQCT device, however, the default modelling approach no longer provides accurate results. The aim of this study was to develop a well-standardized and reproducible approach for mFE and hFE analyses that can provide precise and accurate results for distal radius failure load predictions based on second-generation HR-pQCT images. METHODS: Second-generation HR-pQCT was used to scan the distal 20-mm section of 22 cadaver radii. The sections were excised and mechanically tested afterwards. For these sections, mFE and hFE models were made that were used to identify required material parameters by comparing predicted and measured results. Using these parameters, the models were cropped to represent the 10-mm region recommended for clinical studies to test their performance for failure load prediction. RESULTS: After identification of material parameters, the measured failure load of the 20-mm segments was in good agreement with the results of mFE models (R2 = 0.969, slope = 1.035) and hFE models (R2 = 0.966, slope = 0.890). When the models were restricted to the clinical region, mFE still accurately predicted the measured failure load (R2 = 0.955, slope = 1.021), while hFE predictions were precise but tended to overpredict the failure load (R2 = 0.952, slope = 0.780). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that it is possible to accurately predict the distal radius failure load using either mFE or hFE models when using the approaches and parameters developed in this study.

AIMS: The current study aimed to investigate the ability of lactic acid bacteria (LABs) in removing four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) namely, benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benz(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Chr) and benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) from contaminated phosphate buffer saline (PBS). METHOD AND RESULTS: The effect of initial PAH concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20 µg ml-1 ), bacterial population (107 , 108 , 109 , 1010 CFU per ml) and pH (3, 5, 7) was studied to evaluate bacterial binding ability. All the tested bacteria could remove BaA, Chr, BbF and BaP from phosphate buffer solution and in almost all assays, removing of PAHs was as follows: BaP>Chr>BaA>BaF. Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12 had the lowest binding rate for all four PAHs, while the highest binding ability was related to Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5. Moreover, cell viability was not required for the binding ability and even acid-treated, heat-treated and ultrasonic-treated bacterial cells showed more binding ability. The results showed that the bacteria-PAH complex was irreversible after washing with PBS. CONCLUSIONS: The removal of PAHs was significantly related to pH of media, strains of bacteria, type and concentration of PAHs SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study has been focused on the reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using LABs and probiotics. Our results showed that not only live strains but also inactivated tested strains are able to remove PAHs from aqueous media, presenting new methods to diminish the amount of these contaminants in foods. Furthermore, the results of this study can be used in future research on evaluating the effects of oral administration of probiotic supplements and even dead probiotic strains on reducing PAHs in humans.

Infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus causes a highly contagious immunosuppressive disease in chickens. A total number of 12 pooled bursal samples were collected during 2014-2015 from broiler farms in different regions of Iran. Typical macroscopical and histopathological lesions of the bursa of Fabricius were found similar to reports by other researchers. A 474-bp part of hypervariable region of VP2 (hvVP2) was sequenced and analyzed. Ten isolates had the characteristic amino acid residues of very virulent IBD (vvIBD) viruses and the other two were identified as attenuated (vaccine) strains. The vvIBD isolates had a unique G to S mutation at position 254, compared to other Iranian vvIBD isolates. Two attenuated isolates had the mutation 253Q, not found in D78 strain, creating virulent variant of vaccine strains. Degree of similarity among the studied vvIBD isolates was relatively high (97.6-100%), proposing a common ancestor for them. However, they were partly different from previous Iranian and neighbor countries' isolates (96.2-97.3% similarity to Shiraz isolate and 95.7-96.7% to Iraq and Turkey isolates). In phylogenetic analysis, the studied vvIBD isolates classified as a separate subgroup in the group of isolates from Iran and neighbor countries. More studies on genetic and antigenic characteristics of these isolates as well as probable modifications in their pathogenicity are needed to evaluate the significance of the mentioned differences.

Potato virus Y (PVY) is an important plant pathogen with a wide host range including economically important crops of potato, tobacco, tomato, and pepper. The coat protein gene has been commonly used in studying molecular biology of plant viruses including PVY. In this study, we used a large dataset of CP sequences from isolates collected across the world to assess the detailed molecular evolution of PVY populations with a focus on the Iranian PVY population. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the world PVY population had two major lineages (O:C and N:NTN); each comprising several divergent sublineages. Results showed that the Iranian PVY isolates were distributed across the tree suggesting polyphyletic origin of the Iranian PVY population. Statistical analysis revealed great genetic differences between pairs of the PVY phylogenetic populations. Host populations and also geographical populations of PVY were genetically differentiated. The extent of the genetic diversification among PVY host and geographical populations were mild or moderate. Purifying selection was detected on the CP gene sequences of the PVY populations, suggesting that most of the mutations in the gene were harmful, thereby were eliminated by natural selection. We also detected a variety of recombination patterns to occur along the CP gene of the PVY strains. A significant number of the Iranian PVY isolates were found to be recombinant. Different analyses suggest that Iranian PVY population is highly diverse. In conclusion, results of this study demonstrated that different factors including mutation, host adaptation, geographical distinction and selection pressure shaped the genetic structure of the PVY populations.

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is a zoonotic illness caused by Brucella bacteria, primarily transmitted through contaminated dairy products or direct contact with infected animals. Brucellosis is highly prevalent in Iran, with Brucella melitensis biovar 1 being the primary causative agent. Musculoskeletal symptoms, including spondylitis, sacroiliitis, and peripheral arthritis, are common in brucellosis patients, but avascular necrosis of the hip joint is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents a middle-aged woman from Iran with untreated brucellosis infection, who developed rapidly progressing avascular necrosis affecting both hip joints. The patient's social history did not indicate any use of tobacco or alcohol. Furthermore, there was no indication of any traumatic events affecting the patient's hip joints. The patient's family history did not reveal any rheumatologic disorders, and the patient had not been diagnosed with or reported using immune suppressant medications. Laboratory results confirmed that the patient was not diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. The patient had been intolerant to the prescribed medications, Rifampin and Doxycycline. Initially, she presented with severe bilateral hip pain, anorexia, vomiting, periodic chills and fever, myalgia, and night sweats. Pelvis X-ray confirmed bilateral hip avascular necrosis, and total hip arthroplasty was scheduled but subsequently canceled due to persistent brucellosis infection. Physical examination revealed limited hip motion, pain, and inability to bear weight. Laboratory tests indicated leukocytosis, elevated levels of CRP, and high titers on Wright and 2ME tests. Intravenous Ciprofloxacin was initiated, and further investigations were scheduled. DISCUSSION: Osteoarticular complications are common in individuals with brucellosis. The sacroiliac joints are affected in 80 % of cases, while the spinal joints are affected in 50 %. Brucella-induced arthritis can be found in over 50 % of patients, with the lower limb joints being the most commonly affected. Failure to diagnose and treat hip arthritis caused by brucellosis promptly can lead to severe complications, including dislocation and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Avascular necrosis is a condition where bone tissue dies due to compromised blood supply. It often remains asymptomatic initially and is usually found incidentally during radiographic imaging. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head can manifest as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease or as a complication of other medical conditions. Various factors can contribute to avascular necrosis, including hip dislocation or fracture, prolonged use of certain medications, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging is considered the standard method for diagnosing avascular necrosis. Delay in diagnosing and treating brucellosis can result in permanent bone complications. CONCLUSION: Brucellosis, a disease prevalent in endemic regions, should be considered as a cause of severe hip pain and other vague symptoms. Timely diagnosis and management are important, especially for high-risk patients with other health conditions and poor drug compliance, to prevent complications such as avascular necrosis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety of different doses of subconjunctival bevacizumab and their effects on the recurrence rate after primary pterygium excision. METHODS: This prospective randomized placebo-controlled clinical study was conducted on 59 eyes (59 patients). The visual acuity, refractive astigmatism, horizontal length of the pterygium, and recurrence risk factors were recorded. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups for age, sex, horizontal length of pterygium, preoperative visual acuity, astigmatism, and recurrence risk factors. The pterygium was excised from the conjunctival side and then peeled off the cornea. The bare sclera was covered with a rotational conjunctival flap from the superonasal area. After surgery, Group 1 (22 patients), Group 2 (17 patients) and Group 3 (20 patients) received 7.5 mg bevacizumab, 2.5 mg bevacizumab, and Balanced Salt Solution (BSS) subconjunctivally, respectively. Postoperatively, horizontal length of corneal epithelial defect, conjunctival congestion, and lacrimation were checked on the first and seventh day. The rate of recurrence (>1.5 mm fibrovascular overgrowth on the cornea) at month 6 was compared between the groups. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the groups for all measured variables except for moderate conjunctival congestion on the first postoperative day which was more common in the bevacizumab groups (P=0.002). Four eyes in Groups 1 (20%) and 2 (26.7%) and 3 in Group 3 (15.8%) experienced recurrence (p=0.73). All recurrences occurred at month 3 and subsequently thereafter. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, perioperative injections of subconjunctival bevacizumab had no effect on primary pterygium recurrence and were not associated with any specific local complications.

In the title hydrated mixed-cation salt, (C(5)H(8)N(3))(2)[Co(H(2)O)(6)](SO(4))(2)·2H(2)O, the complete octa-hedral hexa-aqua complex cation is generated by crystallographic inversion symmetry. In the crystal, the components are linked by O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, the latter, involving pyrimidinium cations and sulfate anions, generating R(2) (2)(8) loops. These, together with π-π inter-actions between centrosymmetrically related pyrimidinium cations [centroid-centroid separation = 3.5460 (8) Å], lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network.

Cysteine, as a non-aromatic precursor, was used to produce Nitrogen (N) and Sulfur (S) sources for preparing N, S-doped carbon dots (CDs) with tunable luminescence emission. Despite the tremendous investigations, the photoluminescence (PL) mechanism of CDs is still unclear due to its complex core-shell structure, variety of surface functional groups, and structure dependency. This study focuses on controlling aromatization and graphitization processes during the hydrothermal synthesis on CDs by using Citric Acid (CA) and Ammonium persulfate. Detailed characterizations by FTIR spectroscopy, XPS, and HR-TEM are provided to suggest both chemical and bandgap structures. Results reveal that the red-shift of PL occurred due to the graphitization and increasing content of graphitic nitrogen in the core, as well as the Pyridinic and Amine groups creating sub-bands on the surface. These findings resolve the controversy on the PL mechanism of Cysteine-based CDs and provide a general guide for increasing the aromatization and graphitization degree from non-aromatic precursors which clarify the mechanism exploration and structural analysis of other types of CDs.

The Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a member of the paramyxoviridea family and has great significance in the poultry production industry, which spends a huge amount of money every year on prevention and economic loss caused by this disease. A wide range of symptoms, including respiratory and nervous disorders, as well as hemorrhage lesions in the digestive system are observed in this disease. This research investigated the presence of NDV in 10 poultry farms with high mortality and respiratory symptoms in Kerman province, Iran (between January 2020 to October 2020). Tissue samples were collected from mortalities of 10 flocks in different parts of Kerman province and inoculated into embryonated eggs. The NDV was detected in the allantoic fluid by polymerization of partial F gene protein. The virus was positive in the samples of 5 flocks. The results of the phylogenetic analysis also showed that the sequence of isolates was related to genotype II (three isolates) and sub-genotype VIId (two isolates) of NDVs. It was also found that the amino acid sequences of sub-genotype VIId isolates in the 113 to 116 positions were RRQKR and in the 117 positions was the presence of F (phenylalanine). The other three isolates were grouped with B1, Clone, and LaSota vaccines, and the amino acid sequence in the cleavage site included GRQGRL. The similarity between the studied isolates was 99.6%-98.4%. In this study, virulent viruses were isolated and tracked in broiler farms that were vaccinated with live and killed vaccines. It is recommended to pay more attention to designing the vaccination program.

Myeloablative transplantation of bone marrow (BM) engineered to express myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) establishes central intrathymic tolerance and completely prevents MOG-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in mice. Here we asked whether non-myeloablative transplantation of MOG expressing BM (pMOG-bone marrow transplantation (BMT)) can also provide the same protection. Using stepwise reduction of irradiation doses, 275 cGy irradiation with pMOG-BMT protected 100% of mice from EAE development even with two subsequent re-challenge with MOG. Irradiation doses <275 cGy produced dose-dependent partial protection with significant disease protection still evident at 50 cGy. Splenocytes from 275 cGy recipients proliferated to MOG stimulation in vitro, indicating that MOG-reactive cells are present in the periphery but failed to induce disease. MOG-stimulated splenocytes produced little or no interleukin-17, interferon-γ, granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor and tumor necrosis factor-α compared with EAE control. Adoptive transfer of CD4 T cells from EAE-resistant mice into Rag2(-/-) mice devoid of MOG expression resulted in MOG-induced EAE in ~74% of mice. Treatment of EAE-resistant mice with anti-programmed death 1 (PD-1) monoclonal antibody-induced EAE in 67% of mice. We conclude that non-myeloablative transplantation of self-antigen expressing BM induces robust peripheral tolerance that completely prevented EAE development. Our findings implicate clonal anergy and the PD-1 pathway in the maintenance of peripheral tolerance.

4-Hydroxypyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (chelidamic acid, cdaH(3)) reacts with MnCl(2)·2H(2)O in the presence of 2-amino-4-methylpyrimidine in water to afford the tetranuclear title complex, [Mn(4)(C(8)H(3)NO(5))(4)(H(2)O)(10)]·3.34H(2)O, built through carboxylate bridging. The tetranuclear complex sits on a centre of inversion at (½, ½, ½). In the crystal, discrete undecameric (H(2)O)(10.34) water clusters (involving both coordinated and uncoordinated water molecules, with one site of an uncoordinated water molecule not fully occupied) assemble these tetranuclear Mn(II) complex units via an intricate array of hydrogen bonding into an overall three-dimensional network. The degree of structuring of the (H(2)O)(10.34) supramolecular association of water molecules observed in the present compound, imposed by its environment and vice versa, will be discussed in comparison to that observed for the (H(2)O)(14) supramolecular clusters in the case of the dinuclear complex [Mn(2)(cdaH)(2)(H(2)O)(4)]·4H(2)O [Ghosh et al. In the title compound, (C(13)H(11)N(2))(2)[Zn(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(2)]·3H(2)O, the Zn(II) ion is six-coordinated with the N(4)O(2) donor set being a distorted octa-hedron through two almost perpendicular (r.m.s. deviation of ligand atoms from the mean plane is 0.057 Å) tridentate pyridine-2,6-dicarboxyl-ate ligands [dihedral angle between the ligands = 86.06 (4)°]. The charge is compensated by two 9-amino-acridinium cations protonated on the ring N atom. A variety of inter-molecular contacts, such as ion-ion, N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, and π-π stacking [centroid-centroid distances = 3.4907 (9)-4.1128 (8) Å], between cations and between anions, play important roles in the formation of the three-dimensional network.

In the binuclear centrosymmetric title compound, [In(2)(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(2)(C(7)H(4)NO(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)]·4H(2)O, which contains both pyridine-2,3-dicarboxyl-ate and 3-carb-oxy-pyridine-2-carboxyl-ate ligands, the In(III) atom is six-coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. One pyridine ligand is N,O-chelated while the other is N,O-chelated and at the same time bridging to the other via the second carboxyl group. In the crystal, an extensive O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding network, involving the coordinated and lattice water mol-ecules and the carboxyl groups of the ligands, together with C-H⋯O and π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.793 (1) Å], leads to the formation of a three-dimensional structure.

Background: Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes severe economic losses worldwide. IBV has a broad tissue distribution with different viral loads in different tissues. Additionally, IBV can induce apoptosis in infected cells. Aims: The present study aimed to evaluate the role of the genetic background of chickens in viral load and the expression level of apoptotic genes in different tissues of two hybrids of commercial broiler chickens (Ross 308 and Cobb 500) challenged with IBV. Methods: Chickens at 21 days of age were nasally challenged with 200 µL of allantoic fluid containing 104 EID50/ml of Iranian variant-2-like IBV (IS/1494). The expression level of apoptotic genes (Fas, FasL, Bax, and Bcl-2) in the tracheal and renal tissues and the amount of viral load in the tracheal, renal, and cloacal swab samples were investigated two, five, and seven days after IBV infection by RT-qPCR assay. Results: The amount of viral load and apoptotic the expression level of apoptotic genes in the tracheal (two and five days after infection) and renal samples (seven days after infection) were significantly higher in the Ross challenged group than in the Cobb challenged group.Furthermore, no difference was observed in the cloaca viral load on sampling days. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report that evaluated the role of the chickens' genetic background in the amount of viral load and the expression level of apoptotic genes against IBV. Further studies are needed to investigate the pathogenic characteristics of IBV in Ross 308 and Cobb 500 chickens.

Systemic chemotherapy has lost its position to treat cancer over the past years mainly due to drug resistance, side effects, and limited survival ratio. Among a plethora of local drug delivery systems to solve this issue, the combinatorial strategy of chemo-hyperthermia has recently received attention. Herein we developed a magneto-thermal nanocarrier consisted of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated by a blend formulation of a three-block copolymer Pluronic F127 and F68 on the oleic acid (OA) in which Curcumin as a natural and chemical anti-cancer agent was loaded. The subsequent nanocarrier SPION@OA-F127/F68-Cur was designed with a controlled gelation temperature of the shell, which could consequently control the release of curcumin. The release was systematically studied as a function of temperature and pH, via response surface methodology (RSM). The bone tumor killing efficacy of the released curcumin from the carrier in combination with the hyperthermia was studied on MG-63 osteosarcoma cells through Alamar blue assay, live-dead staining and apoptosis caspase 3/7 activation kit. It was found that the shrinkage of the F127/F68 layer stimulated by elevated temperature in an alternative magnetic field caused the curcumin release. Although the maximum release concentration and cell death took place at 45 °C, treatment at 41 °C was chosen as the optimum condition due to considerable cell apoptosis and lower side effects of mild hyperthermia. The cell metabolic activity results confirmed the synergistic effects of curcumin and hyperthermia in killing MG-63 osteosarcoma cells.

Deep learning techniques have been widely employed in semantic segmentation problems, especially in medical image analysis, for understanding image patterns. Skin cancer is a life-threatening problem, whereas timely detection can prevent and reduce the mortality rate. The aim is to segment the lesion area from the skin cancer image to help experts in the process of deeply understanding tissues and cancer cells' formation. Thus, we proposed an improved fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) architecture for lesion segmentation in dermoscopic skin cancer images. The FCNN network consists of multiple feature extraction layers forming a deep framework to obtain a larger vision for generating pixel labels. The novelty of the network lies in the way layers are stacked and the generation of customized weights in each convolutional layer to produce a full resolution feature map. The proposed model was compared with the top four winners of the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) challenge using evaluation metrics such as accuracy, Jaccard index, and dice co-efficient. It outperformed the given state-of-the-art methods with higher values of the accuracy and Jaccard index.
