RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is a high risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Conventional thromboprophylactic agents have limitations, such as route of administration, the need for monitoring, narrow therapeutic windows and interactions. Apixaban is a new oral anticoagulant with the potential to overcome these limitations. AIMS: To report the efficacy and safety of apixaban and low-molecular-weight heparin, enoxaparin, in VTE prophylaxis following TKA. METHODS: This single-centre, single-surgeon, retrospective analysis included 506 consecutive patients who underwent TKA between 2009 and 2015 and received enoxaparin or apixaban as thromboprophylaxis. Baseline characteristics of patients, in-hospital rates of VTE, total DVT, proximal or distal DVT, pulmonary embolism, bleeding outcomes and mortality were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: In-hospital VTE occurred in 22 (8.9%) patients in the enoxaparin group and 11 (4.5%) patients in the apixaban group (P = 0.049). Nine (3.6%) patients in the enoxaparin group and one (0.4%) in the apixaban group experienced a postoperative drop in haemoglobin ≥20 g/L that either necessitated transfusion of ≥2 units blood, caused haemodynamic instability or both (P = 0.020). Thirty-five patients experienced other bleeding events, with 25 (9.9%) in the enoxaparin group and 10 (4.0%) in the apixaban group (P = 0.009). There were no statistically significant differences in rates of total DVT, proximal or distal DVT, pulmonary embolism or mortality between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with enoxaparin, thromboprophylaxis with apixaban resulted in a lower VTE incidence and fewer haemorrhagic complications.

RESUMO

Reduction in muscle glycogen triggered by adverse antemortem handling events alters postmortem energy metabolism and results in a high ultimate pH and dark, firm and dry beef, often referred to as 'dark-cutting'. However, the relationship between atypical dark (AT) beef, postmortem energy metabolism and underlying tissue characteristics remains somewhat unclear. Cattle harvested in the US and Canada representing normal (pH < 5.6), AT dark (pH 5.6-5.8) and dark cutting (DC; pH > 5.8) beef were analyzed for tissue characteristics related to energy metabolism. Results show AT dark beef is more oxidative but similar to normal beef in glycolytic potential and nucleotide abundance. Mitochondria DNA content (P < 0.05, Canada; P < 0.005, US) and oxidative enzymes for DC and AT dark beef were greater (P < 0.01; Canada and US) compared to normal beef. Myoglobin tracked (P < 0.01) with color classification. These findings show both DC and AT beef are inherently more oxidative and raise the possibility that more oxidative muscle may be more prone to develop dark beef.

RESUMO

The inter-cattle growth variations stem from the interaction of many metabolic processes making animal selection difficult. We hypothesized that growth could be predicted using metabolomics. Urinary biomarkers of cattle feed efficiency were explored using mass spectrometry-based untargeted and targeted metabolomics. Feed intake and weight-gain was measured in steers (n = 75) on forage-based growing rations (stage-1, 84 days) followed by high-concentrate finishing rations (stage-2, 84 days). Urine from days 0, 21, 42, 63, and 83 in each stage were analyzed from steers with the greater (n = 14) and least (n = 14) average-daily-gain (ADG) and comparable dry-matter-intake (DMI; within 0.32 SD of the mean). Steers were slaughtered after stage-2. Adjusted fat-thickness and carcass-yield-grade increased in greater-ADG-cattle selected in stage-1, but carcass traits did not differ between ADG-selected in stage-2. Overall 85 untargeted metabolites segregated greater- and least-ADG animals, with overlap across diets (both stages) and breed type, despite sampling time effects. Total 18-bile acids (BAs) and 5-steroids were quantified and associated with performance and carcass quality across ADG-classification depending on the stage. Stepwise logistic regression of urinary BA and steroids had > 90% accuracy identifying efficient-ADG-steers. Urine metabolomics provides new insight into the physiological mechanisms and potential biomarkers for feed efficiency.

RESUMO

AIM: There is scarce information on rugby league injuries in female players. This paper provides an overview of the epidemiology of women's rugby league injuries requiring medical treatment and associated costs in New Zealand. METHOD: New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation injury data for the period 1999-2007 were searched for rugby league injury cases occurring in females. Data were analysed by demographics, body region, nature/severity of injury, and medical procedure and costs. RESULTS: There were 320 moderate to serious injury claims recorded for females participating in rugby league activities over the study period. There was a mean (SD) of 37.9 (9.5) injury claims per year. The mean cost per year for the study period was $196 514 ($99,133) (£76,066 (£38,374)) with half of the injury claims occurring in New Zealand Maori. Concussion/brain injuries accounted for 3.8% of total female moderate to serious injury claims but accounted for 5.4% of female injury costs ($84,399 (£32,688)) with the highest mean cost per claim ($7033 (£2724)). The lower limb accounted for 65% of the total female injury claims and 58.7% of total injury costs ($922,296 (£356,968)). The mean cost per claim was higher for the lower limb ($4434 (£1714)) than the upper ($3331 (£1288)) limb. Clerks recorded 16.3% of the total injury claims, 20.3% of total injury costs ($319,474 (£123,211)) and had the highest mean cost per claim ($6144 (£2370)). The 25-29 age group recorded 31.9% of injury claims and 33.8% of injury costs. The 35-39 age group recorded the highest mean cost per claim ($6200 (£2392)) but only 10.9% of total claims and 13.8% of total costs. DISCUSSION: When compared with other studies in rugby league injuries, it appears that females incur substantially fewer injuries (5.7%) than males (94.3%). Although no participation data by sex are available, it is likely that participation percentages are reflected in the injury percentages. The high frequency (65%) and cost proportion (58.7%) for lower limb injuries was higher in females than in male rugby league players (previously reported as 42.4% of the injury claims and 31.5% of the total injury claim costs for the lower limb). CONCLUSIONS: Injury prevention programmes for women's rugby league should focus on the 25-29 age group and address ways to prevent concussion and lower limb injuries.

RESUMO

This work combines modeling and experiment to assess encapsulated microbubble oscillations associated with broadband pressure peaks detected after microbubble excitation (postexcitation signals). Data were acquired from albumin-shelled and phospholipid-shelled microbubbles using a passive cavitation detector consisting of a confocally aligned 2.8-MHz transmitter and 13-MHz receiver. Microbubbles in weak solutions were insonified with a 5-cycle pulse at a peak rarefactional pressure of 2.0+/-0.2 MPa. For each microbubble type, at least 100 received signals were identified as individual-microbubble responses. The average broadband noise from signals with postexcitation response was 4.2-7.2 dB higher than from signals without postexcitation. Pressure-time responses for each microbubble type were simulated using the model by Marmottant et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 118, 3499-3505 (2005)], with insonification conditions matching the experiment. Increased broadband noise predicted for microbubbles with postexcitation response was consistent with that observed experimentally (4.0-8.9 dB). The model predicted that postexcitation signals occur only when the radial oscillation exceeds both the shell break-up threshold and twice the initial radius (free bubble inertial cavitation threshold).

RESUMO

A recently designed single-crystal surface calorimeter has been deployed to measure the energy difference between two solid surface structures. The clean Pt{100} surface is reconstructed to a stable phase in which the surface layer of platinum atoms has a quasi-hexagonal structure. By comparison of the heats of adsorption of CO and of C(2)H(4) on this stable Pt{100}-hex phase with those on a metastable Pt{100}-(1x1) surface, the energy difference between the two clean phases was measured as 20 +/- 3 and 25 +/- 3 kilojoules per mole of surface platinum atoms.

RESUMO

AIM: This paper provides an overview of the epidemiology of rugby league injuries and associated costs in New Zealand requiring medical treatment. METHOD: New Zealand national Accident Compensation Corporation injury data for the period 1999 to 2007 were searched for rugby league injury cases. Data were analysed by demographics, body region, nature/severity of injury, and medical procedure and costs. RESULTS: A total of 5941 injury entitlement claims were recorded over the study period with a significant decrease observed in the injury rate between the 1999-2000 and 2002-2003 reporting years. The total cost of the injuries for the study period was $42,822,048 (equivalent to pound15,916,072). The mean (SD) number of injury entitlement claims per year was 743 (271) and yearly cost was $5,352,760 (pound1,989,880) ($2,485,535 (pound923,994)). The knee was the most commonly reported injury site (225 per 1000 entitlement claims; $8,750,147 (pound3,252,020)) and soft tissue injuries were the most common injury types (474 per 1000 entitlement claims; $17,324,214 (pound6,438,599)). Accounting for only 1.8% of total injury entitlement claims, concussion/brain injuries accounted for 6.3% of injury entitlement costs and had the highest mean cost per claim ($25 347 (pound9420)). The upper and lower arm recorded the highest mean injury site claim cost of $43,096 (pound16,016) per claim. The 25-29 age group recorded 27.7% of total injury entitlement claims and 29.6% of total injury entitlement costs, which was slightly more than the 20-24 age group (27.3% claims; 24.7% costs). Nearly 15% of total moderate to serious injury entitlement claims and 20% of total costs were recorded from participants 35 years or older. DISCUSSION: This study identified that the knee was the most common injury site and soft tissue injuries were the most common injury type requiring medical treatment, which is consistent with other international studies on rugby league epidemiology. This study also highlights that the rate of injury and the average age of injured rugby league players increased over time. The high cost of concussion/brain injuries is a cause for concern as it reflects the severity of the injuries. CONCLUSION: Injury prevention programmes for rugby league should focus on reducing the risk of concussion/brain injury and knee and soft tissue injury, and should target participants in the 20-30 years old age range. More longitudinal epidemiological studies with specific details on injury mechanisms and participation data are warranted to further identify the injury circumstances surrounding participation in rugby league activities.

RESUMO

Studies on rugby league injuries use a variety of definitions and methodologies. Consequently, comparisons of published studies are difficult. Researchers with an interest in understanding the epidemiology of rugby league injury participated in a majority agreement process. This paper provides suggestions for the definitions, data collection and reporting methods for future studies of rugby league injuries. The proposed methods and definitions were developed through the use of a majority agreement process on draft versions by all authors. Recommended definitions for injury incidence, recurrence, severity and match exposure are provided as well as injury site, type, diagnosis and causation. Suggestions for match and training injury incidence calculations are also provided for the purposes of comparison. This paper provides standard definitions that, if utilised, will enable meaningful comparison of future rugby league injury surveillance data from different countries and playing levels.

RESUMO

Beef knuckles (n=150) and center-cut top sirloin butts (n=150) were used to determine portion-controlled steak cutting yields, palatability characteristics, and consumer acceptance of rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and gluteus medius (GM) steaks. Steak yields were higher (P<0.05) for top sirloins than knuckles. Trained sensory panel ratings for overall tenderness, juiciness, and flavor were similar between RF and GM. Consumer panel ratings for tenderness and juiciness were higher (P<0.05) for GM than RF; however, consumer perceptions of overall like and flavor were similar for GM and RF. Vastus lateralis received lower (P<0.05) trained panel and consumer ratings for all traits than either RF or GM. Palatability of VL will need improvement to be a viable foodservice offering. Yet, these data suggest that RF would amply substitute for GM in foodservice settings, and that knuckle steak yields would be adequate for foodservice applications.

RESUMO

To test the influence of transportation stress and temperament on shedding of Escherichia coli O157:H7, cattle (n=150) were classified at various stages of production as Excitable, Intermediate or Calm based on a variety of disposition scores. Presence of E. coli O157:H7 was determined by rectal swabs from live animals and from colons collected postmortem. Percentage of cattle shedding E. coli O157:H7 at arrival at the feedlot was approximately equal among temperament groups. Before shipment to the processing facility, a higher (P=0.03) proportion of cattle from the Calm group shed E. coli O157:H7 compared to the other temperament groups. When pooled across all sampling periods, cattle from the Calm group had a greater percentage test positive for E. coli O157:H7. Neither the acute stressor of transportation nor a more excitable temperament led to increased shedding of E. coli O157:H7 in cattle.

RESUMO

With the advent of the Heliophysics/Geospace System Observatory (H/GSO), a complement of multi-spacecraft missions and ground-based observatories to study the space environment, data retrieval, analysis, and visualization of space physics data can be daunting. The Space Physics Environment Data Analysis System (SPEDAS), a grass-roots software development platform (www.spedas.org), is now officially supported by NASA Heliophysics as part of its data environment infrastructure. It serves more than a dozen space missions and ground observatories and can integrate the full complement of past and upcoming space physics missions with minimal resources, following clear, simple, and well-proven guidelines. Free, modular and configurable to the needs of individual missions, it works in both command-line (ideal for experienced users) and Graphical User Interface (GUI) mode (reducing the learning curve for first-time users). Both options have "crib-sheets," user-command sequences in ASCII format that can facilitate record-and-repeat actions, especially for complex operations and plotting. Crib-sheets enhance scientific interactions, as users can move rapidly and accurately from exchanges of technical information on data processing to efficient discussions regarding data interpretation and science. SPEDAS can readily query and ingest all International Solar Terrestrial Physics (ISTP)-compatible products from the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF), enabling access to a vast collection of historic and current mission data. The planned incorporation of Heliophysics Application Programmer's Interface (HAPI) standards will facilitate data ingestion from distributed datasets that adhere to these standards. Although SPEDAS is currently Interactive Data Language (IDL)-based (and interfaces to Java-based tools such as Autoplot), efforts are under-way to expand it further to work with python (first as an interface tool and potentially even receiving an under-the-hood replacement). We review the SPEDAS development history, goals, and current implementation. We explain its "modes of use" with examples geared for users and outline its technical implementation and requirements with software developers in mind. We also describe SPEDAS personnel and software management, interfaces with other organizations, resources and support structure available to the community, and future development plans. ELECTRONIC SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL: The online version of this article (10.1007/s11214-018-0576-4) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

RESUMO

This study investigated the incidence, site, nature and severity of training injuries in a New Zealand amateur rugby league team. The incidence of injuries was prospectively studied in a senior amateur rugby league club over one domestic season. All injuries sustained during training sessions were recorded. Injury data was collected from a total of 77 training sessions. Information recorded included the date, time, site, nature, cause and severity of injury. A total of 66 training injuries were recorded. The total injury incidence was 22.4 per 1000 training hours. Injuries resulting in missed training sessions were 16.9 per 1000 h. The most common injury site was the thigh for both overall injuries and injuries resulting in missed training weeks. The incidence of overexertion injuries peaked immediately prior to the commencement of the competitive season. The high rates of overexertion injuries suggest that an increase in intensity may contribute to training injuries in amateur rugby league players. An understanding of the demands of training, and the effects that injuries have on players is essential for the identification of injury prevention strategies.

RESUMO

The objective was to determine the interactions between packaging type and degree of doneness on sensory traits of pork loins classified based on the newly proposed USDA quality grades. A total of 144 loins were selected from 2 groups of pigs (lean growth or meat quality production focus) to represent as much variation in visual color and marbling as possible. Selection was achieved with a VQG grading camera. The ventral surface of the loins was evaluated for loin quality traits at 1 d postmortem. At 2 d postmortem loins were sliced into 28-mm-thick chops. Chop within each loin was randomly assigned to either individual vacuum packages or to individual Styrofoam trays and overwrapped in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) oxygen permeable film. Overwrapped PVC packages were then placed in bulk packages and flushed with a gas mixture that contained approximately 0.4% carbon monoxide, 30% carbon dioxide, and 80% nitrogen. Vacuum-packaged chops were aged until 14 d postmortem. Chops packaged in PVC overwrap were aged until 9 d postmortem in the bulk packages, then placed on simulated retail display until 14 d postmortem. Chops from each packaging type were cooked to an internal temperature of either 63 °C or 71 °C for the evaluation of slice shear force (SSF) or for evaluation of tenderness, juiciness, and flavor by a trained panel. Data were analyzed as split-split plot design with production focus of the pigs, proposed USDA quality grade, packaging type, and degree of doneness as fixed effects. While there were main effect differences between production focuses, there were no interactions with production focus. There were also no 3-way (P ≥ 0.19) interactions and only one 2-way interaction among quality grade, packaging type, or degree of doneness. There were no differences in sensory tenderness (P = 0.30), juiciness (P = 0.49), flavor (P = 0.89), SSF (P = 0.13), or cook loss (P = 0.06) among USDA quality grades. There were no differences in sensory tenderness (P = 0.06), juiciness (P = 0.32), flavor (P = 0.74), SSF (P = 0.99), or cook loss (P = 0.12) between chops aged in vacuum packages or PVC packages. Chops cooked to 63 °C were 4.6% more tender (P < 0.0001), 10.1% juicier (P < 0.0001), and 2.9% less flavorful (P = 0.01) than chops cooked to 71 °C. These data suggest that cooking chops to 63 °C rather than 71 °C was a more effective way to improve tenderness and juiciness than selecting chops of a certain quality grade or altering packaging postmortem.

RESUMO

The utility of Raman spectroscopic signatures of fresh pork loin (1 d & 15 d postmortem) in predicting fresh pork tenderness and slice shear force (SSF) was determined. Partial least square models showed that sensory tenderness and SSF are weakly correlated (R2 = 0.2). Raman spectral data were collected in 6 s using a portable Raman spectrometer (RS). A PLS regression model was developed to predict quantitatively the tenderness scores and SSF values from Raman spectral data, with very limited success. It was discovered that the prediction accuracies for day 15 post mortem samples are significantly greater than that for day 1 postmortem samples. Classification models were developed to predict tenderness at two ends of sensory quality as "poor" vs. "good". The accuracies of classification into different quality categories (1st to 4th percentile) are also greater for the day 15 postmortem samples for sensory tenderness (93.5% vs 76.3%) and SSF (92.8% vs 76.1%). RS has the potential to become a rapid on-line screening tool for the pork producers to quickly select meats with superior quality and/or cull poor quality to meet market demand/expectations.

RESUMO

Bos indicus crossbred cattle (n=79) were fed vitamin D(3) (0 or 3 million IU/hd/d) for 5d. Afterwards, half of each group was slaughtered immediately, while half was fed, without supplementation, for 7d before processing. Serum calcium concentration was increased (P<0.05) in cattle after supplement removal, but not immediately following supplementation. This also was observed in the M. longissimus lumborum and M. triceps brachii, but not in the M. semitendinosus. Liver biopsy vitamin D(3) concentrations were higher (P<0.05) in supplemented cattle immediately following supplementation, but were not different from controls after supplement removal. Vitamin D(3) did not affect tenderness at supplement removal day 0, but increased the tenderness of the M. longissimus lumborum and M. semitendinosus at supplement removal day 7. Vitamin D(3) supplementation improves muscle tenderness and may be more effective when supplementation is ceased 7d before slaughter, with minimum food safety concerns.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to determine factors that influence tenderness independent of variation in pH, color, or marbling. To achieve the objective, 2 sample groups were chosen from a population of 159 pork loins aged 11 to 16 d. Predetermined ranges (ultimate pH, 5.54 to 5.86; marbling score, 1.0 to 3.0; percent total lipid, 1.61 to 3.37%) were defined for inclusion of individual loins in the study. The pork loins with the greatest ( = 12) and least ( = 12) Instron star probe values were assigned to 2 classification groups. The high star probe group had an average star probe that was 2.8 kg greater than the low star probe group (7.75 vs. 4.95 kg). Pork quality and sensory characteristics of pH, subjective and instrumental color values, cook loss, sensory tenderness, chewiness, juiciness, pork flavor, and off flavor were determined on fresh, never frozen pork chops. Lipid content, sarcomere length, myosin heavy-chain profile, and calpain autolysis were determined. Degradation of troponin-T, desmin, filamin, and titin were evaluated on the protein extracts from each sample. Pork loin pH, subjective color scores, Minolta L values, sarcomere length, and myosin heavy-chain composition were not different across groups. Chops from the low star probe group had a significantly greater marbling score (2.3 vs. 1.9) and lipid content (2.61 vs. 2.23%). Calpain-1 was completely autolyzed in both high and low star probe samples, demonstrating that calpain-1 potentially had been active in all samples. Low star probe whole-muscle protein extracts had more troponin-T ( < 0.01), desmin ( < 0.01), and filamin degradation ( < 0.01) than high star probe samples. Both classification groups showed degradation of titin. Remarkably, some high star probe samples still had observable intact bands of titin on SDS-PAGE gels. These results demonstrate that significant variation in instrumental tenderness is observed within a moderate pH range. Lipid content and proteolysis both appear to contribute to this variation.

RESUMO

The objective was to determine the predictive abilities of HCW for loin, ham, and belly quality of 7,684 pigs with carcass weights ranging from 53.2 to 129.6 kg. Carcass composition, subjective loin quality, and ham face color were targeted on all carcasses, whereas in-plant instrumental loin color and belly quality were assessed on 52.0 and 47.5% of carcasses, respectively. Loin chop slice shear force (SSF), cured ham quality, and adipose iodine value (IV) were evaluated on at least 10% of the population. The slope of regression lines and coefficients of determination between HCW and quality traits were computed using PROC REG of SAS and considered significant at ≤ 0.05. As HCW increased, boneless loins became darker and redder, evidenced by lower L* (ß = -0.0243, < 0.001) and greater a* values (ß = 0.0106, < 0.001); however, HCW accounted for only ≤0.80% of the variability in loin L* and a* values. Similarly, subjective loin color score (ß = 0.0024, < 0.001) increased with increasing carcass weight, but subjective marbling score was not affected by HCW (ß = -0.0022, = 0.06). After 20 d of aging, HCW explained only 0.98% of the variability in loin L* values (ß = -0.0287, < 0.01). Heavier carcasses had lower SSF values (ß = -0.1269, < 0.001) of LM chops, although HCW explained only 4.46% of the variability in SSF. Although heavier carcasses produced loins that exhibited lower ultimate pH values (ß = -0.0018, < 0.001), HCW explained only 1.23% of the variability in ultimate loin pH. Interestingly, cook loss decreased (ß = -0.0521, < 0.001) as HCW increased, with HCW accounting for 5.60% of the variability in cook loss. Heavier carcasses resulted in darker, redder ham face color ( < 0.001), but HCW accounted for only ≤2.87% of the variability in ham face L* values and 0.47% of the variability in a* values. Heavier carcasses produced thicker and firmer bellies, with HCW accounting for 37.81% of the variability in belly thickness (ß = 0.0272, < 0.001), 20.35% of the variability in subjective flop score (ß = 0.0406, < 0.001), and 10.35% of the variability in IV (ß = -0.1263, < 0.001). Overall, the proportion of variability in loin and ham quality explained by HCW was poor (≤5.60%), suggesting that HCW is a poor predictor of the primal quality of pigs within this weight range. Nonetheless, HCW was a moderate predictor of belly quality traits. The findings of this study suggest that increasing HCW did not compromise loin, ham, or belly quality attributes.

RESUMO

The objective was to characterize the factors and production practices that contribute to variation in pork composition and quality. It is possible the variation in pork quality traits, such as color, marbling, and tenderness, contributes to reduced customer confidence in the predictability of finished product quality and, therefore, pork products becoming less competitive for consumer dollars. Pigs raised in 8 different barns representing 2 seasons (hot and cold) and 2 production focuses (lean and quality) were used in this study. Pigs were marketed in 3 groups from each barn and marketing procedures followed commercial marketing procedures. Data were collected on a total of 7,684 pigs. The mivque0 option of the VARCOMP procedure in SAS was used to evaluate the proportion of variation each independent variable (season, production focus, marketing group, sex, and random variation) contributed to total variance. Random variation including inherent biological differences, as well as factors not controlled in this study, contributed the greatest proportion to total variation for each carcass composition and quality trait. Pig and other factors contributed to 93.5% of the variation in HCW, and marketing group, sex, season, and production focus accounted for 4.1, 1.4, 0.8, and 0.3%, respectively. Variation in percent carcass lean was attributed to production focus (36.4%), sex (15.8%), and season (10.2%). Pig and other factors contributed the greatest percentage of total variation (39.4%). Loin weight variation was attributed to production focus (21.4%), sex (5.4%), season (2.7%), marketing group (1.8%), and pig (68.7%). Belly weight variation was attributed to pig (88.9%), sex (4.1%), marketing group (3.8%), production focus (3.0%), and season (0.1%). Variation in ham weight was attributed to pig and other factors (93.9%), marketing group (2.8%), production focus (2.2%), and season (1.1%). Ultimate pH variation was attributed to pig (88.5%), season (6.2%), production focus (2.4%), marketing group (2.2%), and sex (0.7%). Aside from pig (71.9%), production focus (14.0%) was the next largest contributor to variation in iodine value followed by sex (13.2%) and marketing group (0.9%). Variation in carcass quality and composition could be accounted for, but the greatest percentage of variation was due to factors not accounted for in normal marketing practices.

RESUMO

The chemisorption of molecular oxygen on the missing-row reconstructed Pt[110](1 x 2) surface has been investigated using ab initio calculations based on spin-density functional theory. The calculated energetic, structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of the chemisorbed O2 species are discussed in terms of the available experimental data. We find that adsorption in the ridge-bridge site is strongly preferred on energetic grounds, relative to adsorption on the [111] microfacets or in the valley sites of the reconstructed surface. We argue in favor of initial adsorption in the ridge-bridge sites, followed by adsorption in the valley long-bridge sites at higher coverages, without excluding the possibility of bridge-site adsorption on the [111] microfacets.
