Background and Objectives: Sustainability in agricultural systems without compromising the environmental quality and conservation is one of the major concerns of today's world. The excessive use of agrochemicals is posing serious threats to the environment. Therefore identification of efficient plant growth promoting (PGP) bacteria as an alternative to chemically synthesized fertilizers is of great interest. Materials and Methods: In the present investigation, forest soil samples collected were used for isolation of efficient plant growth promoting bacteria. Results: Total of 14 bacteria were isolated, and tested for various PGP properties. Out of the 14 isolates, four isolates labelled as BKOU-1, BKOU-8, BKOU-13 and BKOU-14 showed significant plant growth promoting traits, hydrolytic enzyme production and effectively restricted the mycelial development of phyto-pathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum and Macrophomina phaseolina). 16 S rRNA gene sequences of the bacterial isolates BKOU-1, BKOU-8, BKOU-13 and BKOU-14 were found to have maximum identity with Bacillus aerius, Bacillus infantis, Alcaligenes faecalis and Klebsiella Oxytoca respectively. All four bacterial isolates nucleotide sequences were submitted to GenBank and NCBI accession numbers were generated as follows: OL721916, OL721918, OL721919 and OL721926. Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, these PGPR could be employed as biofertilizers/biopesticides to boost crop yield of different crops in sustainable manner.

In our earlier investigations, we have demonstrated the alteration of antioxidant enzymes in adult rat brain exposed to lead. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of lead on inducing apoptosis by choosing poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), bcl-2 and caspase-3 expression as marker proteins in the cerebellum, the hippocampus, the brain stem and the frontal cortex. Adult male rats were treated with lead acetate (500ppm) through drinking water for a period of 8 weeks and parallel controls were maintained on sodium acetate. Both control and exposed rats were sacrificed at intervals of 4 and 8 weeks, brains were isolated and different regions namely the cerebellum, the hippocampus, the frontal cortex and the brain stem were separated and processed to investigate PARP, bcl-2 and caspase-3 expression using western blotting. The results suggest that lead induces region-specific response of expression in apoptotic proteins of rat brain showing more effect in hippocampus and cerebellum and less effect in frontal cortex and brain stem and it is tissue specific. However, results appear to conclude that PARP induced expression in hippocampus and cerebellum was more followed by mitochondrial and cytosolic damage.

Wistar is the oldest rat strain to be introduced in biomedical research, and various stocks of this strain are maintained in laboratories across the globe. The Wistar strain maintained in our facilities is 85 years old and is not typed genetically so far. Recently, two obese mutant rat strains evolved from this stock, one with euglycemia and the other with impaired glucose tolerance. These mutant rat strains, along with the parental Wistar stock and two other rat strains maintained in our facilities (WKY and F-344), were subjected to PCR-based DNA fingerprinting using microsatellite markers to evolve molecular signatures unique to them. Of the 96 markers screened, we identified a marker, leukosianin, that shows polymorphism between the strains tested and thus appears to be quite useful for rat strain identification. Also, the microsatellite data generated were subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a dendrogram and to estimate the phylogenetic closeness and distance between the rat strains tested. It was observed that the Wistar strain and its mutants maintained in our facility are genetically distinct and phylogenetically separate from the other two standard strains WKY and F-344.

RESUMO

Pediatricians and family practitioners have the responsibility of providing the crucial primary care for the children. They are considered to be in a unique position to contribute to the dental health of their young patients. In view of this a study was conducted in Mangalore city (India) to assess pediatricians' views about oral health care and their advice regarding oral hygiene maintenance. Fifty pediatricians were personally interviewed with a questionnaire. All pediatricians acknowledged their role in oral hygiene maintenance of their patients. This study showed that there is a need for more communication between the two pediatric specialties of medicine and dentistry so as to deliver better child health care.
