Cu-Zn disorder is known to deeply affect kesterite (Cu2ZnSnS4, CZTS) due to the low temperature order-disorder phase transition, leading to a random occupation of the two cations in the shared crystallographic planes. This defect complex has been extensively studied in the thin film photovoltaic sector, with considerable efforts in developing methods to quantify disorder. In this study, a preliminary investigation of thermoelectric properties in temperature for thin film CZTS is presented. It is found that Cu-Zn disorder enhances both electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. This can positively affect the thermoelectric performance, showing a mechanism of potential interest for a broad class of quaternary chalcogenides. The order-disorder transition is clearly visible in the electronic properties. This feature is repeatable, with samples from different preparations and groups showing consistent results, qualitatively suggesting electronic measurements as possible methods to quantify disorder. Furthermore, the reversibility of the transition allows the electronic properties to be tuned via specific thermal treatments, pointing to interesting applications in tunable electronics.

Mode creation and temporal response of broad-area quantum cascade lasers (BA-QCL) placed within an external feedback cavity are described in this publication. The critical feedback parameter becomes the mirror angle relative to the BA-QCL facet. With judicious angle choices, a plethora of curious modes can be created, each with their particular threshold and slope efficiency. These range from a nearly single far-field intensity peak to highly multimode emission similar to their diode counterparts. Dynamics are strongly dominated by transverse mode competition ranging for less than 20MHz to greater than 100MHz. When the mirror is parallel to the facet, higher frequency external cavity oscillations become undamped.

Harmonic mode ultrasound with injection of a contrast enhancement agent allows visualization of mobile microbubbles in the carotid plaque corresponding to neovessels secondary to an inflammation or hypoxia. These neovessels could be considered "precursor" markers of the vulnerable plaque. The aim of this work was to give an update on ultrasound contrast imaging acquisition in the exploration of carotid artery both for atheromatous lesions and for large vessel vasculitis. A precise description of the material to be used, the image acquisition methodology and the environmental conditions is discussed, emphasizing the pitfalls to be avoided as well as proper image interpretation. Microbubbles in a plaque are significantly associated with an increase in cardiovascular events (infarction and acute coronary syndrome) and ipsilateral cerebral ischemic events. Wall irregularities, microfissures and ulcer plaque detection are facilitated by the use of contrast compared to the CT scan. No studies have yet validated contrast enhanced ultrasound in the exploration of asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Contrast enhanced ultrasound also allows to detect vasculitis of the large vessels active phases by the presence of microbubbles in the carotid wall thickening and to monitor the regression under appropriate medical treatment. Future validation studies or even registries are needed to allow better use of this tool in everyday clinical practice.

We hypothesized that adenosine, known to be release from inflammatory sites, could lessen the potentially damaging activity of neutrophils (PMN) primed by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) at sites of infection. We investigated the effect of adenosine on PMN primed with cell-free medium from mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) that had been treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) yielding a conditioned medium rich in TNF alpha and on PMN primed with recombinant human TNF alpha (rhTNF alpha). LPS (10 ng/mL) minimally primed PMN, but LPS-MNL-conditioned medium increased PMN chemiluminescence in response to f-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLP) 1242% compared with unprimed PMN. LPS-MNL-conditioned medium contained adenosine (approximately 30 nM). Converting the adenosine in the LPS-MNL-conditioned medium to inosine with adenosine deaminase (ADA) or blocking adenosine binding to PMN with the adenosine receptor antagonist 1,3-dipropyl-8-(phenyl-p-acrylate)-xanthine (BW A1433U) resulted in a near doubling of chemiluminescence. The LPS-MNL-conditioned medium contained TNF alpha (836 pg/mL; approximately 1 U/mL). Recombinant human TNF alpha (1 U/mL) primed PMN for a 1033% increase in chemiluminescence. Added adenosine decreased rhTNF alpha-primed PMN chemiluminescence (IC50 approximately 100 nM), and adenosine (100 nM) decreased both superoxide and myeloperoxidase release from rhTNF alpha-primed fMLP-stimulated PMN. The activity of adenosine was counteracted by ADA and BW A1433U, and the modulating effect of adenosine was on the primed response rather than on priming per se. Thus, physiological concentrations of adenosine reduce the effects of recombinant human TNF alpha and native human TNF alpha (released from LPS-treated MNL) on PMN activity. Endogenous adenosine may preclude or minimize damage to infected tissue by damping the TNF alpha-primed PMN oxidative response.
