RESUMO

The present study evaluated the cardioprotective effect of astaxanthin (ASX) against isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarction in rats via the pathway of mitochondrial biogenesis as the possible molecular target of astaxanthin. The control group was injected with normal physiological saline subcutaneously for 2 days. The second group was injected with ISO at a dose of 85 mg/kg bwt subcutaneously for 2 days. The third, fourth and fifth groups were supplemented with ASX at doses of 10, 20, 30 mg/kg bwt, respectively daily by oral gavage for 21 days then injected with ISO dose of 85 mg/kg bwt subcutaneously for 2 successive days. Isoproterenol administration in rats elevated the activities of Creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), aspartate transaminase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and other serum cardiac biomarkers Troponin-I activities, oxidative stress biomarkers, malondialdehyde(MDA), Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-KB), while it decreased Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator (PGC-1α), Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nfe212), mitochondrial transcriptional factor A (mt TFA), mitochondrial DNA copy number and glutathione system parameters. However, Astaxanthin decreased the activities of serum AST, LDH, CK-MB, and Troponin I that elevated by ISO. In addition, it increased glutathione peroxidase and reductase activities, total glutathione and reduced GSH content, and GSH/GSSG ratio, mtDNA copy number, PGC-1α expression and Tfam expression that improved mitochondrial biogenesis while it decreased GSSG and MDA contents and NF-KB level in the cardiac tissues. This study indicated that astaxanthin relieved isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction via scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative damage and apoptosis in cardiac tissue.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vaginal progesterone (P) administration during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy on Doppler velocimetry of uterine, umbilical, and middle cerebral vessels. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort study conducted on 80 women at risk for preterm labor. Uterine artery, umbilical artery, and middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler indices were measured before and after 1 week of administration of 200 mg twice daily vaginal P. The primary outcome parameter was the change of MCA pulsatility index (PI) after P administration. Secondary outcomes included changes in uterine artery and umbilical artery Doppler measurement. RESULTS: There was no significant changes of umbilical artery resistance index (RI) (0.69 ± 0.049 vs. 0.68 ± 0.041), umbilical artery PI (1.14 ± 0.118 vs. 1.11 ± 0.116), uterine artery RI (0.66 ± 0.12 vs. 0.66 ± 0.107), uterine artery PI (1.00 ± 0.26 vs. 1.016 ± 0.24), and MCA PI (1.27 ± 0.18 vs. 1.26 ± 0.23) measurements before and after 1 week of P administration, respectively. CONCLUSION: Administration of vaginal P has no significant effects on uterine artery, umbilical artery, and MCA Doppler indices.

BACKGROUND: Phenylephrine is the most commonly used vasopressor for prophylaxis against maternal hypotension during cesarean delivery; however, the best regimen for its administration is not well established. Although variable infusion protocols had been suggested for phenylephrine infusion, evidence-based evaluation of variable infusion regimens are lacking. The aim of this work is to compare variable infusion, fixed on-and-off infusion, and intermittent boluses of phenylephrine for prophylaxis against maternal hypotension during cesarean delivery. METHODS: A randomized controlled study was conducted, including full-term pregnant women scheduled for elective cesarean delivery. Participants were divided into three groups which received phenylephrine by either intermittent boluses (1.5 mcg/Kg phenylephrine), fixed on-and-off infusion (with a dose of 0.75 mcg/Kg/min), or variable infusion (with a starting dose of 0.75 mcg/Kg/min). The three groups were compared with regard to frequency of: maternal hypotension (primary outcome), second episode hypotension, reactive hypertension, and bradycardia. Other outcomes included heart rate, systolic blood pressure, physician interventions, and neonatal outcomes. RESULTS: Two-hundred and seventeen mothers were available for final analysis. The 2 infusion groups showed less incidence of maternal hypotension {26/70 (37%), 22/71 (31%), and (51/76 (67%)} and higher incidence of reactive hypertension compared to the intermittent boluses group without significant differences between the two former groups. The number of physician interventions was highest in the variable infusion group compared to the other two groups. The intermittent boluses group showed lower systolic blood pressure and higher heart rate compared to the two infusion groups; whilst the two later groups were comparable. CONCLUSION: Both phenylephrine infusion regimens equally prevented maternal hypotension during cesarean delivery compared to intermittent boluses regimen. Due to higher number of physician interventions in the variable infusion regimen, the current recommendations which favor this regimen over fixed infusion regimen might need re-evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Post-spinal hypotension is a common maternal complication during cesarean delivery. Aortocaval compression by the gravid uterus has been assumed as a precipitating factor for post-spinal hypotension. The role of left lateral tilting position in improving maternal cardiac output after subarachnoid block (SAB) is unclear. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of left lateral tilting on maternal hemodynamics after SAB. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted including 105 full term pregnant women scheduled for cesarean delivery. Mean arterial pressure, heart rate, cardiac output (measured by electrical cardiometry), stroke volume, and systemic vascular resistance were recorded in three positions (supine, 150, and 300 left lateral positions) before SAB, after SAB, and after delivery of the fetus. RESULTS: Before SAB, no significant hemodynamic changes were reported with left lateral tilting. A significant decrease was reported in mean arterial pressure, cardiac output, stroke volume, and systemic vascular resistance after SAB (in supine position). When performing left lateral tilting, there was an increase in cardiac output, heart rate, and mean arterial pressure. No difference was reported between the two tilt angles (150 and 300). CONCLUSIONS: Changing position of full term pregnant woman after SAB from supine to left lateral tilted position results increased cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. There is no difference between the two tilt angles (150 and 300). TRIAL REGISTRATION: clinicaltrials.gov ( NCT02828176 ) retrospectively registered.

Objective This study aims to detect possible differences in fetal brain volumes between growth-restricted fetuses (FGR), small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses with normal Doppler indices, and appropriate-for-gestational-age fetuses (AGA). Study Design Three-dimensional measurements of fetal brain volume and umbilical artery and middle cerebral artery (MCA) pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) were made in 80 AGA fetuses, 68 SGA fetuses with normal Doppler indices, and 68 FGR with brain-sparing effect between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation. Results MCA-PI and MCA-RI were significantly lower in FGR group compared with the other two groups (p < 0.001). Brain volume was significantly lower in SGA and FGR groups compared with AGA group (p < 0.001). Conclusion Brain volume is significantly lower in SGA and FGR groups compared with AGA group.

Biopharmaceutical and biomedical applications of chitosan has evolved exponentially in the past decade, owing to its unique physicochemical properties. However, further applications can be garnered from modified chitosan, specifically, depolymerized chitosan, with potentially useful applications in drug delivery or biomedicine. The use of microwave irradiation in depolymerization of chitosan appears to be more consequential than other methods, and results in modification of key physicochemical properties of chitosan, including molecular weight, viscosity and degree of deacetylation. In-depth review of such microwave-depolymerized chitosan and subsequent potential biopharmaceutical or biomedical applications has not been presented before. Herein, we present a detailed review of key physicochemical changes in chitosan following various depolymerization approaches, with focus on microwave irradiation and how these changes impact relevant biopharmaceutical or biomedical applications.

Despite the proven efficacy of the disease-modifying therapy (DMT) for multiple sclerosis (MS), the rates of non-adherence are frequently high. We aimed to evaluate the rate of non-adherence to the first DMT in Upper Egypt and identify different contributing factors. Out of 310 patients, ninety-seven adult patients with RRMS were recruited from three MS units located in Upper Egypt and were subjected to the following: complete clinical history, expanded disability status score (EDSS), Eight-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), abbreviated Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication-9 (TSQM-9), Hamilton depression scale, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). According to MMAS-8 scores, 63 (64.9%) of patients were non-adherent to their first DMT. Non-adherent patients are more likely to have longer disease duration (p = 0.002), longer duration on first DMT (p = 0.030), first DMT-start date before 2019 (p = 0.040), and lower treatment satisfaction scores (p = 0.016). However, there was no significant relation with physical disability, depression, fatigue, or sleep quality. On the regression analysis model, a lower treatment satisfaction score was the only predictor of DMT non-adherence (p = 0.012). Despite expanding DMT options, non-adherence among MS patients in Upper Egypt is high. Treatment satisfaction with DMT is the only predictor of adherence among MS patients of Upper Egypt. Adherence and satisfaction with the prescribed DMT should be assessed carefully to maximize DMT benefits.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the impact of patients' baseline clinical, neurophysiological data, and management plan of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) on long-term quality of life (QoL) and to identify its potential predictors. METHODS: Seventy-nine GBS patients were recruited. On admission, participants were evaluated using the Medical Research Council (MRC) sumscore, GBS disability scale (GDS), and Erasmus GBS Respiratory Insufficiency Score (EGRIS). Neurophysiological data were collected, and a management plan was devised. MRC sumscore was repeated at nadir. MRC, GDS and Short Form Survey (SF-36) were assessed at first-year follow-up. RESULTS: The mean age was 37.84 ± 17.26 years, with 43 male patients (54.4%). QoL at one year correlated significantly with baseline clinical variables (age, number of days between weakness and admission, MRC sumscore at onset and nadir, high GDS, and EGRIS scores). Antecedent events, especially diarrhoea, neck muscle weakness, autonomic dysfunction, cranial nerve involvement, and mechanical ventilation (MV), associated with worse QoL. Axonal GBS patients had lower QoL than AIDP patients, and PE patients exhibited lower QoL than IVIG patients. Multiple regression analysis showed that older age, diarrhoea, number of days between weakness and admission, neck muscle weakness, cranial nerve involvement, autonomic dysfunction, early MV, and MRC at onset and nadir and high GDS could predict poor QoL. CONCLUSION: Older age, more days between weakness and admission, neck muscle weakness, cranial nerve involvement, autonomic dysfunction, early MV, diarrhoea, low MRC at onset and nadir, high GDS at onset, axonal type, and PE treatment were potential predictors of poor QoL in GBS.

To mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection in cancer patients, it is recommended to utilize hypo-fractionated treatment schedules that aim to minimize the overall duration of treatment. In this study, we aimed to determine whether hypo-fractionated intensity-modulated radiotherapy (hypo-IMRT) with concurrent chemotherapy was practical, effective, and could achieve acceptable tumor control rates for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). We enrolled 62 patients with high-risk stage II, stage III, and IVA SCCHN who received hypo-IMRT (62.5 Gy in 25 fractions over 5 weeks 2.5Gy/fraction with weekly cisplatin 40 mg/m2). Our primary endpoint was to assess acute toxicity, while our secondary endpoints were late toxicity, loco-regional control, disease-free survival, and overall survival. The percentages of grade 3 acute pain, dermatitis, mucositis, and dysphagia were 71%, 19.4%, 72.6%, and 41.9%, respectively. The rates of late xerostomia, dysphagia, dental complications, grade 3 pain, and grade 3 weight loss were 72.6%, 62.9%, 27.4%, 4.8%, and 4.3%, respectively. At a median follow-up time of 24 months, 2-year loco-regional control and overall survival were 87.1% and 83.9%, respectively. Disease-free survival was 100%, 89.5%, and 69% in stages II, III, and IV%, respectively, with a significant p-value of 0.024. This regimen was effective and relatively safe, with acceptable and tolerable acute and late toxicity. Given the reduced need for hospital visits, hypo-fractionated schedules may represent an alternative treatment during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The earlier the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), the sooner disease-modifying treatments can be initiated. However, significant delays still occur in developing countries. We aimed to identify factors leading to delayed diagnosis of MS in Upper Egypt. One hundred forty-two patients with remitting relapsing MS (RRMS) were recruited from 3 MS units in Upper Egypt. Detailed demographic and clinical data were collected. Neurological examination and assessment of the Disability Status Scale (EDSS) were performed. The mean age was 33.52 ± 8.96 years with 72.5% of patients were females. The mean time from symptom onset to diagnosis was 18.63 ± 27.87 months and the median was 3 months. Seventy-two patients (50.7%) achieved diagnosis within three months after the first presenting symptom (early diagnosis), while seventy patients (49.3%) had more than three months delay in diagnosis (delayed diagnosis). Patients with a delayed diagnosis frequently presented in the period before 2019 and had a significantly higher rate of initial non-motor presentation, initial non-neurological consultations, prior misdiagnoses, and a higher relapse rate. Another possible factor was delayed MRI acquisition following the initial presentation in sixty-six (46.5%) patients. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that earlier presentation, initial non-neurological consultation, and prior misdiagnosis were independent predictors of diagnostic delay. Despite advances in MS management in Egypt, initial non-neurological consultation and previous misdiagnoses are significant factors responsible for delayed diagnosis in Upper Egypt.

Background: Drug-induced QTc interval prolongation (QTcIP) can lead to serious consequences and is often a concern for mental health practitioners, as access to experts such as cardiologists, for consultation is time-limiting and can delay treatment decisions. This research aimed at validating the content of an algorithm for the assessment, management and monitoring of drug-induced QTcIP in mental health practice. Methods: Following an initial face validity by content experts, a cross-sectional survey of mental health care practitioners with a 4-point Likert-type scale was used to assess the validity of the decision steps on the QTcIP algorithm (QTcIPA) by estimating the content validity index (CVI) and the modified kappa statistic (κ*). Participants' open-ended comments were also thematically analyzed. Results: Mental health practitioners found the QTcIPA to be appropriate, safe, and evidence-based, as indicated by the high individual item CVI scores ranging from 0.89 to 1 for all of the steps/decision statements in the three domains assessed: appropriateness, safety and reliability of the references used. Five themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of the open-ended comments, of which three were identified as strengths, including practical usability, reliable references and beneficial for pharmacists. Two themes were recognized as limitations, namely, the need for additional clinical content and application barriers. Conclusion: These results suggest that the QTcIPA may be a useful tool for mental health clinicians at the time of prescribing medications with potential risk of QTcIP. Future research will explore the implementation of the QTcIPA into clinical practice using computerized decision support tools through web-based and mobile applications.

Fatigue is a common disabling symptom of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Many studies have linked grey matter atrophy to fatigue, but white matter lesion load (WM-LL) has received less attention. Here we assess the relation between fatigue and regional WM-LL volumetric measures. 63 patients with RRMS participated in this study; mean age was 31.9 ± 8.1 years. Each patient provided demographic details and was scored on the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and fatigue severity scale (FSS). VolBrain, a fully automated, operator-independent tool was used to assess WM-LL and whole brain volume. The patients were classified into three groups: no fatigue (FSS < 4), low to moderate fatigue (FSS ≥ 4 ≤ 5) and high fatigue (FSS > 5). 33.3% of patients had no significant fatigue, 25.4% had mild-to-moderate fatigue, and 41.3% had significant fatigue. Age, disease duration, relapses, and EDSS were positively correlated to fatigue severity (P = 0.034, 0.002, 0.009 and 0.001 respectively). Whole brain volume, total and regional WM-LL (juxtacortical, periventricular, infratentorial) were also correlated with fatigue severity. Ordinal regression analysis for fatigue severity showed EDSS and infratentorial lesion volume were the best predictors. In conclusion, EDSS and infratentorial lesion volume (cerebellar and brainstem) are the best predictors of fatigue severity.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a typical microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and it remains one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide. Studies postulated that a distinct metabolic signature of DR exists and can be resolved from that of diabetes alone. Serum Semaphorin3A (Sema3A) levels have also been found to be correlated with the phenotypes of diabetic retinopathy. We aimed to analyze and identify serum metabolites and serum Sema3A levels that could be useful biomarkers of DR progression. This cross-sectional study included 45 type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. Diabetic patients were divided into three groups based on the status of their complications: non-DR (NDR, n=15), non-proliferative DR (NPDR, n=15), and proliferative DR (PDR, n=15) groups. Serum metabolomic profiles of these patients were determined by using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), and serum Sema3A levels measured by ELISA. Metabolomics analysis revealed a set of metabolites that were altered in the serum of PDR patients as compared with NPDR and NDR groups. Among these metabolites total asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and Kynurenine were potential predictors of PDR patients. Significantly higher serum levels of Sema3A in PDR patients as compared with NPDR and NDR groups (p < 0.001), their serum levels were positively correlated with the central macular thickness (r= 0.952, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with the superficial macular density (r=-0.952, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the metabolite signatures identified in this study and serum Sema3A levels could be proposed as biomarkers for DR development and progression in T2D patients. However, Sema3A was superior to metabolomics in the prediction of the severity of DR.

The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) association between income and pollution emissions proxies has been extensively tested in the environmental literature. However, testing of the energy-EKC is scanty. This present research examined the energy-EKC in the cubic relationship of economic growth and different renewable and nonrenewable energy proxies in Egypt from 1965-2019. In the long run, we corroborate the N-shaped relationships in the case of primary energy, oil, and coal consumption models, and confirm the long run energy-EKC association in these energy proxies. Moreover, we find turning points of the N-curve for these energy sources in 1998, 2000, and 1979-2005, in primary energy, oil, and coal consumption models, respectively. Hence, economic growth is responsible for increasing nonrenewable energy consumption and has environmental consequences in Egypt. In the short run, we find N-shaped relationships in the case of primary energy, oil, and coal consumption. Further, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship in the case of natural gas consumption. In addition, we corroborate an inverted N-shaped relationship in the case of hydroelectricity consumption, a renewable energy source. Hence, we confirm the short-run energy-EKC relationship in all investigated renewable and nonrenewable energy proxies.

BACKGROUND: QTc interval (QTcI) prolongation leads to serious complications, making it a concern for clinicians. Assessing the risk of QTcI prolongation in the psychiatric population is important because they are exposed to multiple medications known to increase the risk of life-threatening arrhythmias. AIM: The study aims to validate the content of an algorithm for the assessment, management and monitoring of drug-induced QTc prolongation in the psychiatric population. METHODOLOGY: Qualitative semi-structured interviews of cardiologists, to gather information regarding their approach in assessing the risk of drug-induced QTc prolongation at the time of prescribing. After the interview, an orientation to the algorithm was provided with a link to a cross-sectional, anonymous survey. The online survey included quantitative and qualitative components to gather feedback on the relevance and appropriateness of each step in the algorithm. RESULTS: Interview responses were incorporated into 4 themes. Responses indicated a lack of a unified protocol when assessing QTcI prolongation, which supports the need of an algorithm that includes a verified risk scoring tool. Quantitative survey results showed a mean score ranging from 3.08 to 3.67 out of 4 for the appropriateness of the algorithm's steps, 3.08 to 3.58 for the safety and 3.17 to 3.75 for the reliability of references used. Additional analysis using the modified kappa and I-CVI statistical measures indicate high validity of contents and high degree of agreement between raters. As per the open-ended questions, cardiologists supported the implementation of the algorithm; however, they recommended simplification of the steps as they appear to be cumbersome. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that the implementation of the algorithm after minor alterations can prove to be useful as a tool for the risk assessment of QTc prolongation. Further validation of the algorithm with mental health pharmacists and clinicians will be conducted as a separate phase of the study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of performing Zumba exercise on the severity and duration of pain in patients with primary dysmenorrhea. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Cairo University gynecology Hospital and Bahgat gym and fitness center. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-eight women diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhea. INTERVENTIONS: Study participants were divided randomly into 2 equal groups: group I included women who engaged in Zumba exercise for 60 minutes twice weekly for 8 weeks, and group II was a control group with no intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the menstrual pain intensity measured using the visual analogue scale scores at 4 and 8 weeks after starting Zumba exercise. The secondary outcome was the difference in the duration of pain in both groups. RESULTS: Both groups were homogeneous regarding the baseline demographic characteristics. The severity of primary dysmenorrhea at the beginning of the study was not significantly different between the 2 groups. Menstrual pain intensity was significantly decreased in the Zumba group after 4 and 8 weeks of Zumba compared with the control group (mean difference, -2.94 [95% confidence interval, -3.39 to -2.48] and -3.79 [95% confidence interval, -4.16 to -3.43], respectively; P = .001). Also, the duration of pain was shorter in the Zumba group compared with the control group at 8 weeks (4.92 ± 1.90 vs 9.10 ± 2.92 hours, respectively; P = .001). CONCLUSION: The Zumba intervention can reduce the severity and duration of menstrual pain thus suggesting that regularly performing Zumba might be a possible complementary treatment for primary dysmenorrhea.

A screening questionnaire is an important tool for early diagnosis of neurological disorders, and for epidemiological research. This screening instrument must be both feasible and valid. It must be accepted by the community and must be sensitive enough. So, the aim of this study was to prepare different Arabic screening questionnaires for screening different neurological disorders. This study was carried out in three stages. During the first stage, construction of separate questionnaires designed for screening the five major neurological disorders: cerebrovascular stroke, dementias, epilepsy, movement disorders, and muscle and neuromuscular disorders were done. Validation of the screening questionnaires was carried out in the second stage. Finally, questionnaire preparation was done in the third stage. Questions with the accepted sensitivity and specificity in each questionnaire formed the refined separate questionnaires.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of 12-week honey consumption on patients suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM). This was a randomized crossover clinical trial done in the National Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Cairo, Egypt. Twenty patients of both sexes aged 4-18 years with type 1 DM and HbA1C<10% participated in the study. They were randomized into two equal groups (intervention to control and control to intervention). The dietary intervention was 12-week honey consumption in a dose of 0.5 mL/kg body weight per day. The main outcome measures were serum glucose, lipids, and C-peptide, and anthropometric measurements. None of participants were lost in follow-up. The intervention resulted in significant decreases in subscapular skin fold thickness (SSFT; P=.002), fasting serum glucose (FSG; P=.001), total cholesterol (P=.0001), serum triglycerides (TG; P=.0001), and low-density lipoprotein (P=.0009), and significant increases in fasting C-peptide (FCP; P=.0004) and 2-h postprandial C-peptide (PCP; P=.002). As possible long-term effects of honey after its withdrawal, statistically significant reductions in midarm circumference (P=.000), triceps skin fold thickness (P=.006), SSFT (P=.003), FSG (P=.005), 2-h postprandial serum glucose (P=.000), TG (P=.003), and HbA1C (P=.043), and significant increases in FCP (P=.002) and PCP (P=.003) were observed. This small clinical trial suggests that long-term consumption of honey might have positive effects on the metabolic derangements of type 1 DM.

60P2O5-20CaO-(20-x) Na2O-xAg2O and 60P2O5-30CaO-(10-x) Na2O-xAg2O glasses, x = 0, 0.5,1, and 2 mol % were prepared using normal glass melting technique. The antibacterial activity of pressed disks of powdered glass (undoped and silver-doped glass) was investigated against S.aureus, P.aeruginosa, and E.coli micro-organisms using agar disk-diffusion assays at 37 °C for 24 h. The antibacterial activity was deduced from the inhibition zone diameter (IZD), zone of no bacterial growth, measured under the stated experimental conditions. The antibacterial activity increases with the increase in IZD and vice versa. Dissolution of glass in water at 37 °C, pH changes of water during glass dissolution, and concentrations of silver ions released from silver-doped glasses into water during their dissolution were determined. An increase in the concentration of silver ions released from silver-doped glasses into water was observed with increasing time of glass dissolution and with increasing Ag2O content. The tested silver-free and silver-doped glasses demonstrated different antibacterial activity against the tested micro-organisms. For silver-free glasses, an increase in IZD was observed with the increase in the glass dissolution rate and with the decrease in pH of water. Also, the IZD showed an increase with increasing Ag2O content of silver-doped glasses.
