RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: As part of the value-based healthcare programme in our hospital, a set of patient-reported outcome measures was developed together with patients and implemented in the dedicated Turner Syndrome (TS) outpatient clinic. This study aims to investigate different aspects of health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and psychosocial functioning in women with TS in order to establish new possible targets for therapy. DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS: A comprehensive set of questionnaires (EQ-5D, PSS-10, CIS-20, Ferti-QoL, FSFI) was developed and used to capture different aspects of HR-QoL and psychosocial functioning in a large cohort of adult women with Turner syndrome. All consecutive women, ≥18 years, who visited the outpatient clinic of our tertiary centre were eligible for inclusion. RESULTS: Of the eligible 201 women who were invited to participate, 177 women (age 34 ± 12 years, mean ± SD) completed at least one of the validated questionnaires (88%). Women with TS reported a lower health-related quality of life (EQ-5D: 0.857 vs 0.892, P = .003), perceived more stress (PSS-10:14.7 vs 13.3; P = .012) and experienced increased fatigue (CIS-20: P < .001) compared to the general Dutch population. A relationship between noncardiac comorbidities (eg diabetes, orthopaedic complaints) and HR-QoL was found (R = .508). CONCLUSIONS: We showed that TS women suffer from impaired HR-QoL, more perceived stress and increased fatigue compared to healthy controls. A relationship between noncardiac comorbidities and HR-QoL was found. Especially perceived stress and increased fatigue can be considered targets for improvement of HR-QoL in TS women.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence from preclinical and clinical studies indicates that prenatal exposure to stress impairs the development of the offspring brain and facilitates the emergence of mental illness. This study aims to describe the impact of prenatal restraint stress on cognition and exploration to an unfamiliar environment at adulthood in an outbred strain of mice. METHODS: Late pregnant mice were exposed to restraint stress and adult offspring (60 days of age) behaviours were assessed in the object recognition task and open field test. FINDINGS: Prenatal stress (PNS) impaired new object recognition in male and female mice. Importantly, the learning deficits in female PNS mice were linked to their estrous cycle. Actually, PNS females in metestrus/diestrus but not in proestrus/estrus phases displayed recognition deficits compared to controls. Concerning locomotion in an unfamiliar environment, male but not female PNS mice displayed significant increase, but showed no differences in the distance travelled within the centre zone of the arena. CONCLUSION: Present findings support the view that maternal restraint-stress during late pregnancy impairs recognition memory in both male and female offspring, and in females, this cognitive deficit is dependent on the estrous cycle phase. Ultimately, these data reinforce that PNS is an aetiological component of psychiatric disorders associated with memory deficits.

RESUMO

Spinosad and temephos are two of the most used pesticides in Mexico for the control of vector causing disease such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika. The aim of this study was to compare the neurotoxic effects of these two pesticides using guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) as a model organism. Guppies were exposed for 7 and 21 days to technical grade temephos and spinosad at 1.0 and 0.07 g/L, respectively, (10 and 0.5 mg/L of active substance; concentrations recommended by the Ministery of Health of the State (Secretaría de Salud de Nayarit (SSN) Mexico)). Subsequently, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) and acetylcholine concentrations (ACh) in muscle tissue were determined. Temephos exposure decreased AChE activity and increased ACh concentration, whereas exposure to spinosad only increased ACh concentration. Though cholinergic alterations were more severe in fish exposed to temephos, both pesticides were equally lethal during the first seven days after exposure. Nonetheless, temephos was more lethal after 21 days.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hysteroscopy is often done in infertile women starting in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to improve their chance of having a baby. However, no data are available from randomised controlled trials to support this practice. We aimed to assess whether routine hysteroscopy before the first IVF treatment cycle increases the rate of livebirths. METHODS: We did a pragmatic, multicentre, randomised controlled trial in seven university hospitals and 15 large general hospitals in the Netherlands. Women with a normal transvaginal ultrasound of the uterine cavity and no previous hysteroscopy who were scheduled for their first IVF treatment were randomly assigned (1:1) to either hysteroscopy with treatment of detected intracavitary abnormalities before starting IVF (hysteroscopy group) or immediate start of the IVF treatment (immediate IVF group). Randomisation was done with web-based concealed allocation and was stratified by centre with variable block sizes. Participants, doctors, and outcome assessors were not masked to the assigned group. The primary outcome was ongoing pregnancy (detection of a fetal heartbeat at >12 weeks of gestation) within 18 months of randomisation and resulting in livebirth. Analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01242852. FINDINGS: Between May 25, 2011, and Aug 27, 2013, we randomly assigned 750 women to receive either hysteroscopy (n=373) or immediate IVF (n=377). 209 (57%) of 369 women eligible for assessment in the hysteroscopy group and 200 (54%) of 373 in the immediate IVF group had a livebirth from a pregnancy during the trial period (relative risk 1·06, 95% CI 0·93-1·20; p=0·41). One (<1%) woman in the hysteroscopy group developed endometritis after hysteroscopy. INTERPRETATION: Routine hysteroscopy does not improve livebirth rates in infertile women with a normal transvaginal ultrasound of the uterine cavity scheduled for a first IVF treatment. Women with a normal transvaginal ultrasound should not be offered routine hysteroscopy. FUNDING: The Dutch Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMW).

RESUMO

Biosurfactants are important in many areas; however, costs impede large-scale production. This work aimed to develop a global sustainable strategy for the production of biosurfactants by a novel strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Initially, Bacillus sp. strain 0G was renamed B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum (syn. Bacillus velezensis) after analysis of the gyrA and gyrB DNA sequences. Growth in modified Landy's medium produced 3 main recoverable metabolites: surfactin, fengycin, and acetoin, which promote plant growth. Cultivation was studied in the presence of renewable carbon (as glycerol) and nitrogen (as arginine) sources. While diverse kinetics of acetoin production were observed in different media, similar yields (6-8 g·L-1) were obtained after 72 h of growth. Glycerol increased surfactin-specific production, while arginine increased the yields of surfactin and fengycin and increased biomass significantly. The specific production of fengycin increased ∼10 times, possibly due to a connecting pathway involving arginine and ornithine. Adding value to crude extracts and biomass, both were shown to be useful, respectively, for the removal of p-xylene from contaminated water and for biodiesel production, yielding ∼70 mg·g-1 cells and glycerol, which could be recycled in novel media. This is the first study considering circular bioeconomy to lower the production costs of biosurfactants by valorisation of both microbial cells and their primary and secondary metabolites.

RESUMO

This study presents a combined use of site characterization, laboratory experiments, single-well push-pull tests (PPTs), and reactive transport modeling to assess potential impacts of CO2 leakage on groundwater quality and leakage-detection ability of a groundwater monitoring network (GMN) in a potable aquifer at a CO2 enhanced oil recovery (CO2 EOR) site. Site characterization indicates that failures of plugged and abandoned wells are possible CO2 leakage pathways. Groundwater chemistry in the shallow aquifer is dominated mainly by silicate mineral weathering, and no CO2 leakage signals have been detected in the shallow aquifer. Results of the laboratory experiments and the field test show no obvious damage to groundwater chemistry should CO2 leakage occur and further were confirmed with a regional-scale reactive transport model (RSRTM) that was built upon the batch experiments and validated with the single-well PPT. Results of the RSRTM indicate that dissolved CO2 as an indicator for CO2 leakage detection works better than dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, and alkalinity at the CO2 EOR site. The detection ability of a GMN was assessed with monitoring efficiency, depending on various factors, including the natural hydraulic gradient, the leakage rate, the number of monitoring wells, the aquifer heterogeneity, and the time for a CO2 plume traveling to the monitoring well.

RESUMO

This study developed a multicomponent geochemical model to interpret responses of water chemistry to introduction of CO2 into six water-rock batches with sedimentary samples collected from representative potable aquifers in the Gulf Coast area. The model simulated CO2 dissolution in groundwater, aqueous complexation, mineral reactions (dissolution/precipitation), and surface complexation on clay mineral surfaces. An inverse method was used to estimate mineral surface area, the key parameter for describing kinetic mineral reactions. Modeling results suggested that reductions in groundwater pH were more significant in the carbonate-poor aquifers than in the carbonate-rich aquifers, resulting in potential groundwater acidification. Modeled concentrations of major ions showed overall increasing trends, depending on mineralogy of the sediments, especially carbonate content. The geochemical model confirmed that mobilization of trace metals was caused likely by mineral dissolution and surface complexation on clay mineral surfaces. Although dissolved inorganic carbon and pH may be used as indicative parameters in potable aquifers, selection of geochemical parameters for CO2 leakage detection is site-specific and a stepwise procedure may be followed. A combined study of the geochemical models with the laboratory batch experiments improves our understanding of the mechanisms that dominate responses of water chemistry to CO2 leakage and also provides a frame of reference for designing monitoring strategy in potable aquifers.

RESUMO

This study presents two field pulselike CO2-release tests to demonstrate CO2 leakage detection in a shallow aquifer by monitoring groundwater pH, alkalinity, and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) using the periodic groundwater sampling method and a fiber-optic CO2 sensor for real-time in situ monitoring of dissolved CO2 in groundwater. Measurements of groundwater pH, alkalinity, DIC, and dissolved CO2 clearly deviated from their background values, showing responses to CO2 leakage. Dissolved CO2 observed in the tests was highly sensitive in comparison to groundwater pH, DIC, and alkalinity. Comparison of the pulselike CO2-release tests to other field tests suggests that pulselike CO2-release tests can provide reliable assessment of geochemical parameters indicative of CO2 leakage. Measurements by the fiber-optic CO2 sensor, showing obvious leakage signals, demonstrated the potential of real-time in situ monitoring of dissolved CO2 for leakage detection at a geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) site. Results of a two-dimensional reactive transport model reproduced the geochemical measurements and confirmed that the decrease in groundwater pH and the increases in DIC and dissolved CO2 observed in the pulselike CO2-release tests were caused by dissolution of CO2 whereas alkalinity was likely affected by carbonate dissolution.

RESUMO

This study presents a regional assessment of CO2-solubility trapping potential (CSTP) in the Texas coastal and offshore Miocene interval, comprising lower, middle, and upper Miocene sandstone. Duan's solubility model [Duan et al. Mar. Chem. 2006, 98, 131-139] was applied to estimate carbon content in brine saturated with CO2 at reservoir conditions. Three approaches (simple, coarse, and fine) were used to calculate the CSTP. The estimate of CSTP in the study area varies from 30 Gt to 167 Gt. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the CSTP in the study area is most sensitive to storage efficiency, porosity, and thickness and is least sensitive to background carbon content in brine. Comparison of CSTP in our study area with CSTP values for seven other saline aquifers reported in the literature showed that the theoretical estimate of CO2-solubility trapping potential (TECSTP) has a linear relationship with brine volume, regardless of brine salinity, temperature, and pressure. Although more validation is needed, this linear relationship may provide a quick estimate of CSTP in a saline aquifer. Results of laboratory experiments of brine-rock-CO2 interactions and the geochemical model suggest that, in the study area, enhancement of CSTP caused by interactions between brine and rocks is minor and the storage capacity of mineral trapping owing to mineral precipitation is relatively trivial.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare perinatal singleton and multiple outcomes in a large Dutch in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) population and within risk subgroups. Newborns were assigned to a risk category based on gestational age, birthweight, Apgar score and congenital malformation. DESIGN: Register-based retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Netherlands Perinatal Registry data. SAMPLE: A total of 3041 singletons and 1788 multiple children born from IVF/ICSI in 2003-2005. METHODS: Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test was used to analyze continuous data, chi-squared analyses were used for categorical data. Multivariate logistic and linear regression analysis was performed to analyze whether the risk stratification criteria were associated with neonatal hospital admission and length of stay. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Start of labor, mode of delivery, gestational age, birthweight, 5-min Apgar score, congenital malformation, neonatal hospital admission, neonatal intensive care unit admission and mortality. RESULTS: IVF/ICSI-conceived multiples had considerably poorer outcomes than singletons in terms of cesarean section rate, preterm birth, birthweight, being small-for-gestational-age, Apgar score, neonatal hospital admission, neonatal intensive care unit admission and neonatal mortality. As opposed to the results found in the total study population and the low-risk and moderate-risk populations, high-risk multiples showed better outcomes than high-risk singletons regarding cesarean section rate, birthweight and Apgar score. All risk stratification variables were associated with being hospitalized after birth. Length of stay was associated with all risk stratification criteria except Apgar score. CONCLUSIONS: Perinatal outcomes in IVF/ICSI-conceived multiples are considerably poorer than in singletons. This finding mainly pertains to low-risk children. High-risk multiples had significantly better perinatal outcomes than high-risk singletons.

RESUMO

The anion conductance in primary cultures of rat inner medullary collecting duct cells was studied using perforated-patch whole-cell clamp technique. Depolarizations above 0 mv induced an outward anionic current with a time-dependent activation (Iovt) exhibiting a similar conductivity to Cl- and HCO3-. Iovt showed half-maximal activation around 32 mV with a slope factor of 23 mV, and showed a voltage-dependent activation time course that was well fitted by a sum of two exponential functions. Iovt was potentiated when external pH or external Ca2+ was increased and was blocked by external DIDS, DPC and furosemide. These characteristics of Iovt resemble that of the ClC-K1 channels mediated currents; however, anion substitution studies showed that Iovt exhibits a Br->Cl->I->NO3- conductivity sequence, different from that observed in the ClC-K1 channels-mediated conductance. We suggest that, in inner medullary collecting duct cells, ClC-K channels of an unidentified type give rise to this Cl- and HCO3- conductance. This is the first study of a channel-mediated HCO3- current in kidney tubular cells.

RESUMO

Late post-training activation of the ventral tegmental area (VTA)-hippocampus dopaminergic loop controls the entry of information into long-term memory (LTM). Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) modulate VTA function, but their involvement in LTM storage is unknown. Using pharmacological and behavioral tools, we found that α7-nAChR-mediated cholinergic interactions between the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus and the medial prefrontal cortex modulate the duration of fear-motivated memories, maybe by regulating the activation state of VTA-hippocampus dopamine connections.

RESUMO

Background: In women, exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals might accelerate the depletion of the ovarian reserve and might be associated with accelerative reproductive aging and fertility. We examined the longitudinal associations of exposure to bisphenols and phthalates with anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations. Methods: Pregnant women of 18 years or older that resided in Rotterdam between 2002 and 2006 were eligible for participation in this longitudinal prospective cohort study. We measured urinary bisphenol and phthalate concentration at three time-points in pregnancy among 1405 women, of whom 1322 women had serum Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) measurements 6 and/or 9 years postpartum. We performed linear regression models to assess the association of urinary bisphenol and phthalate metabolites with AMH after 6 and 9 years, and linear mixed-effect model to assess the association with AMH over time. Models were adjusted for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Findings: In our multivariable linear regression models we observed associations of higher urinary pregnancy-averaged mono-isobutyl phthalate (mIBP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (mEOHP), and monobenzyl phthalate (mBzBP) with lower serum AMH after both 6 and 9 years. However, these associations did not remain after adjustment for multiple testing. No significant associations of bisphenol A with AMH were present in our study sample. In our linear mixed-effects models, higher mIBP, mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (mEHHP), mEOHP, and mBzBP were associated with lower overall AMH levels (differences -0.07 (95% CI -0.13, -0.02), -0.09 (-0.15, -0.02), -0.08 (95% CI -0.14, -0.02), and -0.08 (-0.13, -0.03) µg/L per doubling in mIBP, mEHHP, mEOHP, and mBzBP respectively) (all False Discovery Rate adjusted p-values < 0.05). Interpretation: We identify decreases in indices of ovarian reserve in relationship to prenatal phthalate exposures. Studies are needed replicating our results among large multi-ethnic non-pregnant populations and assessing transgenerational effects of exposure on ovarian reserve. RESUMO

Local control of protein synthesis at synapses is crucial for synaptic plasticity and memory formation. However, little is known about the signals coupling neurotransmitter release with the translational machinery during these processes. Here, we studied the involvement of heme-regulated inhibitor (HRI) kinase, a kinase activated by nitric oxide that phosphorylates eukaryotic initiation factor 2α (eIF2α), in object recognition (OR) memory consolidation. Phosphorylated eIF2α mediates two opposing effects upon translation: translational arrest of most mRNAs and translational activation of selected mRNAs bearing specific features in their 5'untranslated regions (5'UTRs). We found that HRI kinase activation in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus is necessary for retention of OR memory in rats. Accordingly, learning induced a transient increase in the phosphorylation state of eIF2α in dorsal CA1 which was abolished by the HRI kinase inhibitor N-(2,6-dimethylbenzyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-2H-[1]benzofuro[3,2-c]pyrazol-3-amine hydrochloride (AMI). The increase in p-eIF2α was associated with increased expression of BACE1 and activating transcription factor 4, two proteins containing eIF2α-responsive 5'UTRs in their mRNAs that play a key role in synaptic plasticity. Our data suggests that learning promotes the transient phosphorylation of eIF2α to allow for translation of specific 5'UTR-mRNAs through a process requiring HRI kinase activation.

RESUMO

The impact on coastal ecosystems of suspended solids, organic matter, and bacteria in shrimp farm effluents is presented. Sites around Bahía de Kino were selected for comparative evaluation. Effluent entering Bahia Kino (1) enters Laguna La Cruz (2). A control site (3) was outside the influence of effluents. Water quality samples were collected every two weeks during the shrimp culture period. Our data show that the material load in shrimp farm effluents changes biogeochemical processes and aquatic health of the coastal ecosystem. Specifically, the suspended solids, particulate organic matter, chlorophyll a, viable heterotrophic bacteria, and Vibrio-like bacteria in the bay and lagoon were two- to three-fold higher than the control site. This can be mitigated by improvements in the management of aquaculture systems.

RESUMO

The incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) has increased globally in the past decades, including in the United States. However, little is known about the differences in trends across states, gender, and age groups within the United States. Using the Global Burden of Disease database, we analyzed the incidence and mortality trends of IE in the United States between 1990 and 2019 using Joinpoint regression analyses, and compared between states, gender, and age groups. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of IE in the United States increased from 10.2/100,000 population in 1990 to 14.4 in 2019. The increase in ASIR was greater among men than women (45.8% vs 34.1%). The incidence increase was driven by 55+ year-olds (112.7% increase), with rapid increases in the 1990s and early 2000s, followed by a plateau around the mid-2000s. In contrast, the incidence among 5-to-19-year-olds decreased by -36.6% over the 30-year period. The incidence increased among all age groups in the last 5 years of observation (2015 to 2019), with the largest increase in 5-to-19-year-olds (3.3% yearly). The 30-year increase in ASIR was greatest in Utah (66.2%) and smallest in California (30.2%). The overall age-standardized mortality attributable to IE increased in the United States by 126% between 1990 and 2019 versus 19.6% globally. In conclusion, although the overall incidence and mortality of IE increased over the past 30 years in the United States, there are significant differences between regions, gender, and age groups. These findings indicate unevenly distributed disease burden of IE across the nation.

RESUMO

Healthy human volunteers 16-82 years of age with at least 10 years of schooling were exposed to two different memory tasks. The first task involved incidental memory. The subjects were asked, as casually as possible: "Did you watch any movie on TV 2 days ago? And 7 days ago? If so, do you remember the title of the movie(s) and the name of the first two actors (actresses)?" Retention scores (maximum = 3: title, actor 1, and actor 2) were equally high (overall mean = 2.6, n = 61) in all age groups (16-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-60, and 61-82 years) for the day 2 scores. Scores for the movie seen 7 days before decreased significantly and progressively in the three older groups in relation to age, which indicates reduced persistence of this type of memory beginning at the age of 41-50 years and becoming more extensive over the years. The other task was a formal memory procedure. Subjects were asked to study a brief text with factual information on the 1954 World Soccer Cup for 10 min. They were then exposed to 10 questions on the text 2 days and, again, 7 days later. Retention scores declined between the two tests, but in this task, the decline of persistence occurred to a similar extent in all age groups, and thus was not dependent on age. Methylphenidate (10 mg p.o.) given 12 hours after acquisition markedly enhanced persistence of the two memory types. This suggests an involvement of dopaminergic processes in persistence in the late posttraining period.

RESUMO

There is abundant literature on the role of the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and the CA1 region of the hippocampus in memory formation of inhibitory avoidance (IA) and other behaviorally arousing tasks. Here, we investigate molecular correlates of IA consolidation in the two structures and their relation to NMDA receptors (NMDArs) and beta-adrenergic receptors (beta-ADrs). The separate posttraining administration of antagonists of NMDAr and beta-ADr to BLA and CA1 is amnesic. IA training is followed by an increase of the phosphorylation of calcium and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) and ERK2 in CA1 but only an increase of the phosphorylation of ERK2 in BLA. The changes are blocked by NMDAr antagonists but not beta-ADr antagonists in CA1, and they are blocked by beta-ADr but not NMDAr antagonists in BLA. In addition, the changes are accompanied by increased phosphorylation of tyrosine hydroxylase in BLA but not in CA1, suggesting that beta-AD modulation results from local catecholamine synthesis in the former but not in the latter structure. NMDAr blockers in CA1 do not alter the learning-induced neurochemical changes in BLA, and beta-ADr blockade in BLA does not hinder those in CA1. When put together with other data from the literature, the present findings suggest that CA1 and BLA play a role in consolidation, but they operate to an extent in parallel, suggesting that each is probably involved with different aspects of the task studied.

RESUMO

Aging affects the overall physiology, including the image-forming and non-image forming visual systems. Among the components of the latter, the thalamic retinorecipient inter-geniculate leaflet (IGL) and ventral lateral geniculate (vLGN) nucleus conveys light information to subcortical regions, adjusting visuomotor, and circadian functions. It is noteworthy that several visual related cells, such as neuronal subpopulations in the IGL and vLGN are neurochemically characterized by the presence of calcium binding proteins. Calretinin (CR), a representative of such proteins, denotes region-specificity in a temporal manner by variable day-night expression. In parallel, age-related brain dysfunction and neurodegeneration are associated with abnormal intracellular concentrations of calcium. Here, we investigated whether daily changes in the number of CR neurons are a feature of the aged IGL and vLGN in rats. To this end, we perfused rats, ranging from 3 to 24 months of age, within distinct phases of the day, namely zeitgeber times (ZTs). Then, we evaluated CR immunolabeling through design-based stereological cell estimation. We observed distinct daily rhythms of CR expression in the IGL and in both the retinorecipient (vLGNe) and non-retinorecipient (vLGNi) portions of the vLGN. In the ZT 6, the middle of the light phase, the CR cells are reduced with aging in the IGL and vLGNe. In the ZT 12, the transition between light to dark, an age-related CR loss was found in all nuclei. While CR expression predominates in specific spatial domains of vLGN, age-related changes appear not to be restricted at particular portions. No alterations were found in the dark/light transition or in the middle of the dark phase, ZTs 0, and 18, respectively. These results are relevant in the understanding of how aging shifts the phenotype of visual related cells at topographically organized channels of visuomotor and circadian processing.

RESUMO

Composition and abundance of phytoplankton in two areas of Gulf of California, one near (ND) and one far (FD) from shrimp farms discharge, were studied in 3 seasons: late fall (farms finishing operations); spring (farms not operating); and summer (farms operating). In ND, 61 diatoms, 33 dinoflagellates, 4 cyanobacteria, and 2 silicoflagellates were identified; in FD, 72 diatoms, 38 dinoflagellates, 5 cyanobacteria, and 4 silicoflagellates were found. Thirty-three species were recorded only in ND (20 diatoms, 11 dinoflagellates, 1 silicoflagellate), whereas 39 species appeared exclusively in the FD (28 diatoms, 9 dinoflagellates, 1 cyanobacteria, 1 silicoflagellate). Thirty-seven species were common for both areas (23 diatoms, 10 dinoflagellates, 3 cyanobacteria and 1 silicoflagellate). In ND, 9 species potentially toxic (3 diatoms, 5 dinoflagellates, 1 cyanobacteria) were identified. From FD, 3 species potentially toxic (2 diatoms and 1 cyanobacteria) were found. Total abundance of phytoplankton was more than double in ND than in FD. The species richness and diversity, were greater in FD. Higher phytoplankton abundance was observed when farms were operating or finishing operations. The composition and abundance of phytoplankton is a good indicator of shrimp effluents impact, diminishing the species richness and diversity, but augmenting the abundance.
