PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to systematically analyze the clinical characteristics of a large cohort of parasagittal meningioma (PM) and to evaluate the patients' outcomes and best treatment strategies based on tumor features. METHODS: To minimize selection bias we performed a single-institutional review of PM with restricted criteria. One hundred and ninety-two consecutive patients who met criteria for inclusion were reviewed from 2003 to 2011 in our general hospital. RESULTS: A total of 131 cases (68.2%) were with WHO grade I, while grade II and grade III PMs constituted 40 (20.8%) and 21 cases (10.9%). Higher histological grade was associated with loss of trimethylation of H3K27 (P = 0.000). For WHO grade I PMs, GTR was significantly associated with a better PFS (P = 0.023); however, adjuvant radiotherapy did not benefit patients with STR (P = 0.215). For de novo high-grade (WHO grade II and III) PMs (n = 37), adjuvant radiotherapy was associated with a significantly longer OS (P = 0.013), while no difference was observed between GTR and STR (P = 0.654). In recurrent high-grade PM patients (n = 24), GTR combined with adjuvant radiotherapy increased PFS (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that PMs were a heterogeneous group of tumors with a high proportion of high-grade tumors that often displayed aggressive clinical behaviors. Low-grade PM benefited from radical resection, whereas high-grade de novo PM did not. Adjuvant radiotherapy significantly prolonged OS for high-grade primary PM, but did not impact survival of patients with subtotally resected low-grade tumors. Long-term outcome of high-grade recurrent PMs was dismal. We thus show that extent of tumor resection, tumor grade and tumor recurrent status inform therapeutic decisions for PMs.

In urban environments, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals are frequently attenuated, blocked or reflected, which degrades the positioning accuracy of GNSS receivers significantly. To improve the performance of GNSS receiver for vehicle urban navigation, a GNSS/INS deeply-coupled software defined receiver (GIDCSR) with a low cost micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) inertial measurement unit (IMU) ICM-20602 is presented, in which both GPS and BDS constellations are supported. Two key technologies, that is, adaptive open-close tracking loops and INS aided pseudo-range weight control algorithm, are applied in the GIDCSR to enhance the signal tracking continuity and positioning accuracy in urban areas. To assess the performance of the proposed deep couple solution, vehicle field tests were carried out in GNSS-challenged urban environments. With the adaptive open-close tracking loops, the deep couple output carrier phase in the open sky, and improved pseudo-range accuracy before and after GNSS signal blocked. Applying the INS aided pseudo-range weight control, the pseudo-range gross errors of the deep couple decreased caused by multipath. A popular GNSS/INS tightly-coupled vehicle navigation kit from u-blox company, M8U, was tested side by side as benchmark. The test results indicate that in the GNSS-challenged urban areas, the pseudo-range quality of GIDCSR is at least 25% better than that of M8U, and GIDCSR's horizontal positioning results are at least 69% more accurate than M8U's.

The fully autonomous operation of multirotor unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) in many applications requires support of precision landing. Onboard camera and fiducial marker have been widely used for this critical phase due to its low cost and high effectiveness. This paper proposes a six-degrees-of-freedom (DoF) pose estimation solution for UAV landing based on an artificial marker and a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) inertial measurement unit (IMU). The position and orientation of the landing maker are measured in advance. The absolute position and heading of the UAV are estimated by detecting the marker and extracting corner points with the onboard monocular camera. To achieve continuous and reliable positioning when the marker is occasionally shadowed, IMU data is fused by an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The error terms of the IMU sensor are modeled and estimated. Field experiments show that the positioning accuracy of the proposed system is at centimeter level, and the heading error is less than 0.1 degrees. Comparing to the marker-based approach, the roll and pitch angle errors decreased by 33% and 54% on average. Within five seconds of vision outage, the average drifts of the horizontal and vertical position were 0.41 and 0.09 m, respectively.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to thoroughly analyze the clinical characteristics of a large cohort of spinal meningioma (SM) from a single neurological center and identify risk factors associated with worse progression free survival and neurological function outcome. METHODS: Clinical information was retrieved from 483 SM and 9806 cranial meningioma cases who were operated in our center between 2003 and 2013. 194 SM patients who were followed at the main branch were used for prognostic analyses that included both recurrence free survival and neurological functions based on Modified McCormick scale (MMS). RESULTS: Females were predominant (P < 0.001). High grade tumors were not common (WHO grade II, 2.9%; grade III, 1.7%), while the clear cell subtype was frequent within grade II SMs (6/14, 42.9%). Macroscopic total resection was achieved in all SMs (Simpson grade I, 30.9%; grade II, 65.5%; grade III, 3.6%) with a low complications rate (4.6%) and provided neurological improvement in 80 patients (41.2%). Recurrence was seen in 9 cases (4.6%) and associated with high WHO grade, male, prior recurrence, and Simpson grade III. High WHO grade and high Ki-67 index were identified to be independent factors predictive of both neurological function deterioration and impaired post-operative neurological status. CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis of the largest SM cohort in scale from a single institution offers a comprehensive view of the clinical characteristics of surgically treated SM, revealing the distinct biology of SM in comparison to its cranial counterparts, and providing guidance to improve surgical management of SM.

BACKGROUND: The ability of preoperative MRI-sequences to predict the consistency of intracranial meningiomas has not yet been clearly defined. We aim to demonstrate that diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) improves the prediction of intracranial meningiomas consistency. METHODS: We prospectively studied 110 meningioma patients operated on in a single center from March 1st to the 25th of May 2012. Demographic data, location and size of the tumor, peritumoral edema, T1WI, T2WI, proton density weighted (PDWI), fluid-attenuated inversion recover (FLAIR) sequences, and arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion were studied and compared with the gray matter signal to predict meningioma consistency. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) maps were included in the preoperative MRI. Meningioma consistency was evaluated by the operating surgeon who was unaware of the neuroradiological findings. RESULTS: In univariate analysis, meningioma size (diameter > 2 cm) and supratentorial or sphenoidal wing location were more frequently associated with hard-consistency meningiomas (p < 0.05). In addition, isointense signal on MD maps (p = 0.009), hyperintense signal on FA maps, and FA value > 0.3 (p = 0.00001) were associated with hard-consistency tumors. Age and sex, T1WI, T2WI, PDWI, FLAIR, or ASL perfusion sequences and peritumoral edema were not significantly associated with meningioma consistency. In logistic regression analysis, the most accurate model (AUC: 0.9459) for predicting a hard-consistency meningioma shows that an isointense signal in MD-maps, a hyperintense signal in FA-maps, and an FA value of more than 0.3 have a significant predictive value. CONCLUSIONS: FA value and MD and FA maps are useful for prediction of meningioma consistency and, therefore, may be considered in the preoperative routine MRI examination of all patients with intracranial meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Here, we introduced our short experience on the application of a new CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system, which was provided by Integra Lifesciences corporation, in skull base meningiomas resection. METHODS: Ten patients with anterior, middle skull base and sphenoid ridge meningioma were operated using the CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system at the Neurosurgery Department of Shanghai Huashan Hospital from August 2014 to October 2014. There were six male and four female patients, aged from 38 to 61 years old (the mean age was 48.5 years old). Five cases with tumor located at anterior skull base, three cases with tumor on middle skull base, and two cases with tumor on sphenoid ridge. RESULTS: All the patents received total resection of meningiomas with the help of this new tool, and the critical brain vessels and nerves were preserved during operations. All the patients recovered well after operation. CONCLUSIONS: This new CUSA Excel ultrasonic aspiration system has the advantage of preserving vital brain arteries and cranial nerves during skull base meningioma resection, which is very important for skull base tumor operations. This key step would ensure a well prognosis for patients. We hope the neurosurgeons would benefit from this kind of technique.

The apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele (APOE4) is universally acknowledged as the most potent genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). APOE4 promotes the initiation and progression of AD. Although the underlying mechanisms are unclearly understood, differences in lipid-bound affinity among the three APOE isoforms may constitute the basis. The protein APOE4 isoform has a high affinity with triglycerides and cholesterol. A distinction in lipid metabolism extensively impacts neurons, microglia, and astrocytes. APOE4 carriers exhibit phenotypic differences from non-carriers in clinical examinations and respond differently to multiple treatments. Therefore, we hypothesized that phenotypic classification of AD patients according to the status of APOE4 carrier will help specify research and promote its use in diagnosing and treating AD. Recent reviews have mainly evaluated the differences between APOE4 allele carriers and non-carriers from gene to protein structures, clinical features, neuroimaging, pathology, the neural network, and the response to various treatments, and have provided the feasibility of phenotypic group classification based on APOE4 carrier status. This review will facilitate the application of APOE phenomics concept in clinical practice and promote further medical research on AD.

The zinc finger transcription factor ZFX functions as an important regulator of self-renewal in multiple stem cell types, as well as a sex determinant of mammals. Moreover, ZFX expression is abnormally elevated in several cancers, and correlates with malignancy grade. To investigate its role in the pathogenesis of gliomas, we used lentivirus-mediated RNA interference (RNAi) to knockdown ZFX expression in human glioma cell lines. Our results demonstrate that ZFX plays a crucial role in glioma proliferation and survival, confirming recent reports. We also show for the first time that ZFX knockdown decreases the in vivo growth potential of U87 glioma xenografts in both subcutaneous and intracranial models in nude mice. We conclude that lentivirus-mediated RNAi targeting of ZFX may serve as a promising strategy for glioma therapy.

Glucose metabolism-related protein 1 (GMRP1), also known as BTBD10, has been reported to inhibit apoptosis of neuronal and islet beta cells via the Akt pathway. The present study attempted to investigate whether GMRP1 and its mediated Akt pathway were involved in brain injury of rats after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Rat models of ICH had been established successfully. Western blotting was used to investigate the levels of GMRP1 protein in the caudate nuclei tissues of the hemorrhagic and contralateral sides at 6 h, day 1, day 3, day 5, and day 7 after ICH. Phosphorylations of Akt was determined in caudate nuclei mentioned above. TUNEL assay was used to measure the cell apoptosis. GMRP1 protein levels, as well as phosphorylations of Akt, significantly decreased in caudate nuclei of the hemorrhagic side, compared with those of the contralateral side on day 1 and day 3 after ICH. Enhanced cell apoptosis was observed on the hemorrhagic side using TUNEL assay. We presented here evidence that a decreased GMRP1-mediated Akt pathway contributed to cell apoptosis on the hemorrhagic side, suggesting that GMRP1 plays an important role in brain damage after ICH.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) can lead to tragic disability and mortality. Accumulating evidence has shown that sodium calcium exchanger (NCX) may contribute to the secondary injury of a stroke. Recently, a novel member of NCX, SLC24A6, was discovered with knowledge of its abundant distribution in brain. In the present study, we examined the time course of expression of SLC24A6 and its mediated intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) to investigate its potential roles in brain damage after ICH. An ICH model was established as previously reported. Real-time PCR and Western blotting were used to test the mRNA and protein levels of SLC24A6 on the hemorrhagic side and on the contralateral side caudate nucleus tissues at 6 h, and on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after ICH. Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze the morphological changes. Fura-2/AM loaded, dual wavelength spectrophotofluorometry was used to test [Ca(2+)]i. The data presented a remarkable decrease in SLC24A6 early after ICH, along with a comparable increase in [Ca(2+)]i. Our results indicated that SLC24A6 presents specific and remarkable alterations in both mRNA and protein levels after ICH. Decreases in SLC24A6 level were correlated with [Ca(2+)]i elevation. These data suggest that SLC24A6-mediated calcium overload plays an important role in brain damage after ICH.

PURPOSES: We reported the roles and functions of nurses in home visits for brain tumor patients using the family health assessment guide in the study. METHODS: One patient of brain glioma was chosen as the case illustration. The nurses assessed the patients' situation, their families and living environment individually. All these factors were analyzed together. RESULTS: The nurses then implemented their knowledge and skills to adopt different measures in different conditions, investigated the patients' health problems and carried out personalized effective actions. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses should put effort into community nursing to allow patients to live in a safe environment, to satisfy the health needs of human being and their needs for health knowledge, and enhance their self-care abilities.

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial meningiomas, especially those located at anterior and middle skull base, are difficult to be completely resected due to their complicated anatomy structures and adjacent vessels. It's essential to locate the tumor and its vessels precisely during operation to reduce the risk of neurological deficits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intraoperative ultrasonography in displaying intracranial meningioma and its surrounding arteries, and evaluate its potential to improve surgical precision and minimize surgical trauma. METHODS: Between December 2011 and January 2013, 20 patients with anterior and middle skull base meningioma underwent surgery with the assistance of intraoperative ultrasonography in the Neurosurgery Department of Shanghai Huashan Hospital. There were 7 male and 13 female patients, aged from 31 to 66 years old. Their sonographic features were analyzed and the advantages of intraoperative ultrasonography were discussed. RESULTS: The border of the meningioma and its adjacent vessels could be exhibited on intraoperative ultrasonography. The sonographic visualization allowed the neurosurgeon to choose an appropriate approach before the operation. In addition, intraoperative ultrasonography could inform neurosurgeons about the location of the tumor, its relation to the surrounding arteries during the operation, thus these essential arteries could be protected carefully. CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative ultrasonography is a useful intraoperative technique. When appropriately applied to assist surgical procedures for intracranial meningioma, it could offer very important intraoperative information (such as the tumor supplying vessels) that helps to improve surgical resection and therefore might reduce the postoperative morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: Metaplastic meningioma is a rare subtype of benign meningiomas, classified as WHO grade I with well prognosis. Here we presented our experiences on 15 cases of metaplastic meningioma, to investigate the clinicopathological features, therapies and prognosis of these cases. METHODS: 15 patients underwent surgical treatment for intracranial metaplastic meningioma between 2001 and 2010 at Neurosurgery Department of Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. The clinical data, radiological manifestation, treatment strategy, pathological findings and prognosis of all patients were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Among the 15 cases (10 males and 5 females), the age ranged from 22 to 74 years old (the mean age was 50.67-year old). The clinical manifestations include headache, dizziness, seizure attack, vision decrease, and weakness of bilateral lower limbs. All the patients received surgical treatment, combined with radiotherapy in some cases. In the follow-up period, recurrence occurred in 2 cases, of which 1 patient died of other system complications. CONCLUSIONS: Metaplastic meningiomas are characterized by focal or widespread mesenchymal differentiation with formation of bone, cartilage, fat, and xanthomatous tissue elements. Surgical removal is the optimal therapy, and the overall prognosis is well. But recurrence may occur in some cases, thus radiotherapy is necessary for such kind of patients.

Auroras are bright occurrences when high-energy particles from the magnetosphere and solar wind enter Earth's atmosphere through the magnetic field and collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere. The morphological and temporal characteristics of auroras are essential for studying large-scale magnetospheric processes. While auroras are visible to the naked eye from the ground, scientists use deep learning algorithms to analyze all-sky images to understand this phenomenon better. However, the current algorithms face challenges due to inefficient utilization of global features and neglect the excellent fusion of local and global feature representations extracted from aurora images. Hence, this paper introduces a Hash-Transformer model based on Vision Transformer for aurora retrieval from all-sky images. Experimental results based on real-world data demonstrate that the proposed method effectively improves aurora image retrieval performance. It provides a new avenue to study aurora phenomena and facilitates the development of related fields.

Ischemic stroke is a very common cerebrovascular accident that occurred in adults and causes higher risk of neural deficits. After ischemic stroke, patients are often left with severe neurological deficits. Therapeutic strategies for ischemic stroke might mitigate neuronal loss due to delayed neural cell death in the penumbra or seek to replace dead neural cells in the ischemic core. Currently, stem cell therapy is the most promising approach for inducing neurogenesis for neural repair after ischemic stroke. Stem cell treatments include transplantation of exogenous stem cells but also stimulating endogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) proliferation and differentiation into neural cells. In this review, we will discuss endogenous NSCs-induced neurogenesis after ischemic stroke and provide perspectives for the therapeutic effects of endogenous NSCs in ischemic stroke. Our review would inform future therapeutic development not only for patients with ischemic stroke but also with other neurological deficits.

Meningioma is one of the most common primary neoplasms in the central nervous system, whereas there is still no specific molecularly targeted therapy that has been approved for the clinical treatment of aggressive meningiomas. There is therefore an urgent demand to decrypt the biological and molecular landscape of malignant meningioma. Here, through the in-silica prescreening and 10-year follow-up of 445 meningioma patients, we uncovered that CBX7 is progressively decreased with malignancy grade and neoplasia stage in meningioma and a high CBX7 expression level predicts a favorable prognosis in meningioma patients. CBX7 restoration significantly induces cell cycle arrest and inhibits meningioma cell proliferation. iTRAQ-based proteomics analysis indicated that CBX7 restoration triggers the metabolic shift from glycolysis to oxidative phosphorylation. The mechanistic study demonstrated that CBX7 promotes the proteasome-dependent degradation of c-MYC proteins by transcriptionally inhibiting the expression of a c-MYC deubiquitinase, USP44, which attenuates c-MYC-mediated transactivation of LDHA transcripts and further inhibits glycolysis and subsequent cellular proliferation. More importantly, the functional role of CBX7 was further confirmed in both subcutaneous and orthotopic meningioma xenografts mouse models and human meningioma patients. Together, our results shed light on the critical role of CBX7 during meningioma malignancy progression and identified the CBX7/USP44/c-MYC/LDHA axis as a promising therapeutic target against meningioma progression.

Owing to lack of appropriate model systems, investigations of meningioma biology have come to a stop. In this study, we developed a comprehensive digestion method and defined a culture system. Using this method and system, primary meningioma cells in conditioned suspension medium and a hypoxic environment could be amplified in spheres and were passaged for more than ten generations. Meningioma sphere cells were positive for meningioma cell markers and negative for markers of neural cell types. Importantly, we found the cells expressed the stem cell marker, CD133, but not nestin. All of the tumor sphere cell populations showed a slower degree of cell proliferation than that of human glioma cells and fetal neural stem cells (NSCs). Further studies showed that the proliferative rate was positively correlated with CD133 expression. The higher the CD133 expression, the faster the cell proliferation. With the increase in cell generations, the cell proliferation rate gradually slowed down, and CD133 expression also decreased. Single CD133(+) cells rather than CD133(-) cells could form spheres. Thus, the results above indicated that those cells expressing CD133 in spheres might be stem-like cells, which may be responsible for efficient amplification of human meningioma cells. Decreased expression of CD133 may lead to the failure of long-term passaging.

Ischemic stroke, with its high morbidity and mortality, is the most common cerebrovascular accident and results in severe neurological deficits. Despite advances in medical and surgical intervention, post-stroke therapies remain scarce, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Over the past decades, stem cell transplantation has been recognized as very promising therapy for neurological diseases. Neural stem cell (NSC) transplantation is the optimal choice for ischemic stroke as NSCs inherently reside in the brain and can potentially differentiate into a variety of cell types within the central nervous system. Recent research has demonstrated that NSC transplantation can facilitate neural recovery after ischemic stroke, but the mechanisms still remain unclear, and basic/clinical studies of NSC transplantation for ischemic stroke have not yet been thoroughly elucidated. We thus, in this review, provide a futher understanding of the therapeutic role of NSCs for ischemic stroke, and evaluate their prospects for future application in clinical patients of ischemic stroke.

Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumors accounting for about 30% of all brain tumors. The vast majority of meningiomas are slow-growing and of benign histopathology rendering them curable by surgery alone. Symptomatic lesions depend on the location with signs of mass effect or neurological deficits. Seizures are the presenting symptoms in approximately 30% of cases, which negatively affect quality of life, limit independence, impair cognitive functioning, as well as increase the risk for psychiatric comorbidities including depression. Although surgical resection may offer seizure freedom in 60-90% of meningiomas, seizures persist after surgical resection in approximately 12-19% of patients. Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are employed in management, however, are limited by adverse neurocognitive side-effects and inefficacy in some patients. The potential predictors of pre- and post-operative seizures in meningioma patients have been identified in the literature. Understanding various factors associated with seizure likelihood in meningioma patients can help guide more effective seizure control and allow for better determination of risk before and after surgery.
