RESUMO

AIMS: To describe the results of a study of images of men in nursing on television. BACKGROUND: Previous research has highlighted stereotypical images around nursing, such as the battle-axe, naughty nurse and handmaiden. More recent research focuses on images of nurses who are men, because of the growing numbers of men in the nursing workforce. Given that negative images can harm recruitment and retention in the profession, it is important to interrogate how men in nursing are portrayed in popular culture. Representations on television are particularly critical to explore because of the medium's wide audience. DESIGN: Qualitative study. METHODS: Five American medical television programmes appearing between 2007 and 2010 were analysed for their construction of men in nursing: Grey's Anatomy, Hawthorne, Mercy, Nurse Jackie and Private Practice. FINDINGS: Men in nursing on television were portrayed in ways that engaged with explicit and implicit stereotypes. The men were often subject to questions about their choice of career, masculinity and sexuality and their role usually reduced to that of prop, minority spokesperson or source of comedy. Thus, rather contradictorily, although the programmes often sought to expose common stereotypes about men in nursing, they nonetheless often reinforced stereotypes in more implicit ways. CONCLUSION: This research has implications for better understanding not only the status of nursing in our society but also for nursing practice and education and attracting more men to the profession.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to develop and test the psychometric properties of the Attitudes, Subjective Norms, Perceived Behavioural Control, and Intention to Pursue a Career in Mental Health Nursing (ASPIRE) scale, an instrument to assess nursing students' intention to work in mental health nursing. Understanding the factors influencing undergraduate nursing students' career intentions might lead to improved recruitment strategies. However, there are no standardized tools to measure and assess students' intention to pursue a career in mental health nursing. The present study used a cross-sectional survey design undertaken at a large tertiary institution in Western Sydney (Australia) between May and August 2013. It comprised three distinct and sequential phases: (i) items were generated representing the four dimensions of the theory of planned behaviour; (ii) face and content validity were tested by a representative reference group and panel of experts; and (iii) survey data from 1109 first- and second-year and 619 third-year students were used in exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to test the factorial validity of the scale. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha. Items generated for the ASPIRE scale were subject to face and content validity testing. Results showed good factorial validity and reliability for the final 14-item scale. Principal axis factoring revealed a one-factor solution, the hypothesized model being supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The ASPIRE scale is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring intention to pursue a career in mental health nursing among Bachelor of Nursing students.

RESUMO

We describe a previously unreported anatomical variant of the peroneal artery that was found both on preoperative angiography and at operation to be related to the fibula only in its distal third. In contrast to previously reported variations, the artery began descending on the medial aspect of the fibula about 26cm from the fibular head.

RESUMO

Chordoma is a rare tumor, arising from notochord remnants, which usually occurs in the axial skeleton and rarely metastasizes. Although there have been 3 previous reports of metastatic disease to the facial bones from sacrococcygeal chordoma, this is the first to describe spread to the mandible from a vertebral primary chordoma.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) degrades type IV collagen, the major constituent of lung basement membrane. We studied the effects of chorioamnionitis and antenatal corticosteroids on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid levels of MMP-9, and its inhibitor, TIMP-1 in preterm infants. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study was performed on serial BAL samples from 79 ventilated preterm infants at less than 33 weeks' gestation, 18 of whom were from pregnancies complicated by chorioamnionitis. MMP-9 levels were measured by gelatin zymography and TIMP-1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the median value for each infant was calculated. The presence and severity of chorioamnionitis were defined histologically. RESULTS: BAL fluid MMP-9 levels were higher in preterm infants in the chorioamnionitis group (86 [29-518] vs 13 [3-43] ng/mL, P =.001), and levels increased stepwise with the increasing severity of chorioamnionitis. Antenatal corticosteroids had no effect on median MMP-9 levels. Infants in the chorioamnionitis group were more likely to have chronic lung disease (CLD) develop (55% vs 28%, P <.05). TIMP-1 levels were no different between groups. CONCLUSION: Chorioamnionitis is associated with increased lung type IV collagenase levels in the ventilated preterm infant. Antenatal lung inflammation with up-regulation of MMP-9 may be important in the pathogenesis of CLD.
