RESUMO

Moiré superlattices have led to observations of exotic emergent electronic properties such as superconductivity and strong correlated states in small-rotation-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG)1,2. Recently, these findings have inspired the search for new properties in moiré plasmons. Although plasmon propagation in the tBLG basal plane has been studied by near-field nano-imaging techniques3-7, the general electromagnetic character and properties of these plasmons remain elusive. Here we report the direct observation of two new plasmon modes in macroscopic tBLG with a highly ordered moiré superlattice. Using spiral structured nanoribbons of tBLG, we identify signatures of chiral plasmons that arise owing to the uncompensated Berry flux of the electron gas under optical pumping. The salient features of these chiral plasmons are shown through their dependence on optical pumping intensity and electron fillings, in conjunction with distinct resonance splitting and Faraday rotation coinciding with the spectral window of maximal Berry flux. Moreover, we also identify a slow plasmonic mode around 0.4 electronvolts, which stems from the interband transitions between the nested subbands in lattice-relaxed AB-stacked domains. This mode may open up opportunities for strong light-matter interactions within the highly sought after mid-wave infrared spectral window8. Our results unveil the new electromagnetic dynamics of small-angle tBLG and exemplify it as a unique quantum optical platform.

Microbial interactions are key to maintaining soil biodiversity. However, whether negative or positive associations govern the soil microbial system at a global scale remains virtually unknown, limiting our understanding of how microbes interact to support soil biodiversity and functions. Here, we explored ecological networks among multitrophic soil organisms involving bacteria, protists, fungi, and invertebrates in a global soil survey across 20 regions of the planet and found that positive associations among both pairs and triads of soil taxa governed global soil microbial networks. We further revealed that soil networks with greater levels of positive associations supported larger soil biodiversity and resulted in lower network fragility to withstand potential perturbations of species losses. Our study provides unique evidence of the widespread positive associations between soil organisms and their crucial role in maintaining the multitrophic structure of soil biodiversity worldwide.

Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) possesses intriguing physical properties including unconventional superconductivity, enhanced light-matter interaction due to the formation of van Hove singularities (vHS), and a divergence of density of states in the electronic band structures. The vHS energy band gap provides optical resonant transition channels that can be tuned by the twist angle and interlayer coupling. Raman spectroscopy provides rich information on the vHS structure of tBLG. Here, we report the discovery of an ultralow-frequency Raman mode at ∼49 cm-1 in tBLG. This mode is assigned to the combination of ZA (an out-of-plane acoustic phonon) and TA (a transverse acoustic phonon) phonons, and the Raman scattering is proposed to occur at the so-called mini-valley. This mode is found to be particularly sensitive to the change in vHS in tBLG. Our findings may deepen the understanding of Raman scattering in tBLG and help to reveal vHS-related electron-phonon interactions in tBLG.

Renovascular hypertension (RVHT) is characterized by renal artery stenosis and overactivated renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Apelin, known for its negative modulation of RAS, has protective effects against cardiovascular diseases. The role and mechanisms of the primary active form of apelin, apelin-13, in RVHT are unclear. In this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, two-kidney one-clip (2K1C) model, and 2K1C with apelin-13 treatment groups. Renin expression was analyzed using immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques. Full-length (pro)renin receptor (fPRR) and soluble PRR (sPRR) levels were assessed via Western blotting, and cAMP levels were measured using ELISA. Plasma renin content, plasma renin activity (PRA), angiotensin II (ANG II), and sPRR levels were determined by ELISA. Human Calu-6 and mouse As4.1 cells were used to investigate renin production mechanisms. The 2K1C model exhibited increased systolic blood pressure, plasma renin content, PRA, sPRR, and ANG II levels, while apelin-13 treatment reduced these elevations. Apelin-13 inhibited cAMP production, renin mRNA expression, protein synthesis, and PRR/sPRR protein expression in renal tissue. In Calu-6 cells, cAMP-induced fPRR and site-1 protease (S1P)-derived sPRR expression, which was blocked by cAMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB) inhibition. Apelin-13 suppressed cAMP elevation, CREB phosphorylation, fPRR/sPRR protein expression, and renin production. Recombinant sPRR (sPRR-His) stimulated renin production, which was inhibited by the PRR decoy peptide PRO20 and S1P inhibitor PF429242. These findings suggest that apelin-13 inhibits plasma renin expression through the cAMP/PKA/sPRR pathway, providing a potential therapeutic approach for RVHT. Understanding the regulation of renin production is crucial for developing effective treatments.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our research elucidated that apelin-13 inhibits renin production through the cAMP/PKA/soluble (pro)renin receptor pathway, presenting a promising therapeutic approach for renovascular hypertension (RVHT) by targeting renin expression mechanisms. These findings underscore the potential of apelin-13 as a novel strategy to address RVHT.

The (pro)renin receptor ((P)RR) is an essential component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) as a specific single-pass transmembrane receptor for prorenin and renin and has now emerged as a multifunctional protein implicated in a wide variety of developmental and physio-pathological processes and pathways. The (P)RR may be of pathological significance in metabolic syndrome. The (P)RR has received much consideration; substantial efforts have been made to understand the localization, regulation, and function of the (P)RR at both a molecular and system level. (P)RR regulation of cell function depends on whether it is intact or cleaved into its constituent forms. Therefore, the present chapter describes immunohistochemical approaches to examine the expression of (P)RR in various organs. It was shown that different molecular forms of (P)RR could be present in different tissue compartments in almost all organs. Among them, the liver has high PRR activity. Our findings could elucidate more detailed distribution of different (P)RR molecular forms in different organs, which could provide useful information to further investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms of the development of various diseases in the future.

Recent progress of Raman spectroscopy on carbon nanotubes and 2D materials is reviewed as a topical review. The Raman tensor with complex values is related to the chiral 1D/2D materials without mirror symmetry for the mirror in the propagating direction of light, such as chiral carbon nanotube and black phosphorus. The phenomenon of complex Raman tensor is observed by the asymmetric polar plot of helicity-dependent Raman spectroscopy using incident circularly-polarized lights. First-principles calculations of resonant Raman spectra directly give the complex Raman tensor that explains helicity-dependent Raman spectra and laser-energy-dependent relative intensities of Raman spectra. In deep-ultraviolet (DUV) Raman spectroscopy with 266 nm laser, since the energy of the photon is large compared with the energy gap, the first-order and double resonant Raman processes occur in general k points in the Brillouin zone. First-principles calculation is necessary to understand the DUV Raman spectra and the origin of double-resonance Raman spectra. Asymmetric line shapes appear for the G band of graphene for 266 nm laser and in-plane Raman mode of WS2 for 532 nm laser, while these spectra show symmetric line shapes for other laser excitation. The interference effect on the asymmetric line shape is discussed by fitting the spectra to the Breit-Wigner-Fano line shapes.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness (AS) is an important predicting factor for cardiovascular disease. However, no epidemiological studies have ever explored the mediating role of biomarkers in the association between ozone and AS, nor weather fish oil modified such association. METHODS: Study participants were drawn from the UK biobank, and a total of 95,699 middle-aged and older adults were included in this study. Ozone was obtained from Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model matched to residential addresses, fish oil from self-reported intake, and arterial stiffness was based on device measurements. First, we applied a double robust approach to explore the association between ozone or fish oil intake and arterial stiffness, adjusting for potential confounders at the individual and regional levels. Then, how triglycerides, apolipoprotein B (Apo B)/apolipoprotein A (ApoA) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Non-HDL-C) mediate the relationship between ozone and AS. Last, the modifying role of fish oil was further explored by stratified analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 55 years; annual average ozone exposure was associated with ASI (beta:0.189 [95%CI: 0.146 to 0.233], P < 0.001), and compared to participants who did not consume fish oil, fish oil users had a lower ASI (beta: 0.061 [95%CI: -0.111 to -0.010], P = 0.016). The relationship between ozone exposure and AS was mediated by triglycerides, ApoB/ApoA, and Non-HDL-C with mediation proportions ranging from 10.90% to 18.30%. Stratified analysis showed lower estimates on the ozone-AS relationship in fish oil users (P = 0.011). CONCLUSION: Ozone exposure was associated with higher levels of arterial stiffness, in contrast to fish oil consumption, which showed a protective association. The association between ozone exposure and arterial stiffness was partially mediated by some biomarkers. In the general population, fish oil consumption might provide protection against ozone-related AS.

AIM: Despite the emphasis on sensory dysfunction phenotypes in the revised diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there has been limited research, particularly in the field of neurobiology, investigating the concordance in sensory features between individuals with ASD and their genetic relatives. Therefore, our objective was to examine whether neurobehavioral sensory patterns could serve as endophenotypic markers for ASD. METHODS: We combined questionnaire- and lab-based sensory evaluations with sensory fMRI measures to examine the patterns of sensory responsivity in 30 clinically diagnosed with ASD, 26 matched controls (CON), and 48 biological parents for both groups (27 parents of individuals with ASD [P-ASD] and 21 for individuals with CON [P-CON]). RESULTS: The ASD and P-ASD groups had higher sensory responsivity and rated sensory stimuli as more unpleasant than the CON and P-CON groups, respectively. They also exhibited greater hemodynamic responses within the sensory cortices. Overlapping activations were observed within these sensory cortices in the ASD and P-ASD groups. Using a machine learning approach with robust prediction models across cohorts, we demonstrated that the sensory profile of biological parents accurately predicted the likelihood of their offspring having ASD, achieving a prediction accuracy of 71.4%. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide support for the hereditary basis of sensory alterations in ASD and suggest a potential avenue to improve ASD diagnosis by utilizing the sensory signature of biological parents, especially in families with a high risk of ASD. This approach holds promising prospects for early detection, even before the birth of the offspring.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation with wavelengths of 10-121 nm has drawn considerable attention recently for its use in photolithography to fabricate nanoelectronic chips. This study demonstrates, for the first time, fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers as scintillators to image and characterize EUV radiations. The FNDs employed are ∼100 nm in size; they form a uniform and stable thin film on an indium-tin-oxide-coated slide by electrospray deposition. The film is nonhygroscopic and photostable and can emit bright red fluorescence from NV0 centers when excited by EUV light. An FND-based imaging device has been developed and applied for beam diagnostics of 50 nm and 13.5 nm synchrotron radiations, achieving a spatial resolution of 30 µm using a film of ∼1 µm thickness. The noise equivalent power density is 29 µW/(cm2 Hz1/2) for the 13.5 nm radiation. The method is generally applicable to imaging EUV radiation from different sources.

BACKGROUND: Gossypol is a unique secondary metabolite and sesquiterpene in cotton, which is mainly synthesized in the root system of cotton and exhibits many biological activities. Previous research found that grafting affected the density of pigment glands and the gossypol content in cotton. RESULTS: This study performed a transcriptome analysis on cotton rootstocks and scions of four grafting methods. The gene expression of mutual grafting and self-grafting was compared to explore the potential genes involved in gossypol biosynthesis. A total of six differentially expressed enzymes were found in the main pathway of gossypol synthesis-sesquiterpene and triterpene biosynthesis (map00909): lupeol synthase (LUP1, EC:5.4.99.41), beta-amyrin synthase (LUP2, EC:5.4.99.39), squalene monooxygenase (SQLE, EC:1.14.14.17), squalene synthase (FDFT1, EC:2.5.1.21), (-)-germacrene D synthase (GERD, EC:4.2.3.75), ( +)-delta-cadinene synthase (CADS, EC:4.2.3.13). By comparing the results of the gossypol content and the density of the pigment gland, we speculated that these six enzymes might affect the biosynthesis of gossypol. It was verified by qRT-PCR analysis that grafting could influence gene expression of scion and stock. After suppressing the expression of the LUP1, FDFT1, and CAD genes by VIGS technology, the gossypol content in plants was significantly down-regulated. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate the potential molecular mechanism of gossypol synthesis during the grafting process and provide a theoretical foundation for further research on gossypol biosynthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Although abundant research delving into the acute exercise-induced modulation of cognitive performance and the P300-ERP component has been conducted, there is a lack of consensus regarding whether or not this type of intervention has a beneficial effect on cognition and how it relates to the P300-ERP. METHODS: To examine the possible sources of this discrepancy, we conducted a meta-analysis of ERP results together with cognitive performance that were systemically stratified by relevant demographic and methodological moderators. RESULTS: Our results indicate that while acute exercise exerted an overall stable effect on cognitive improvement, associated with enlarged P300 amplitudes, the effect size varied across factors of age, biological sex, exercise intensity, exercise type, control type, and experimental design. Future research taking into consideration modulating factors as to avoid misestimating the beneficial effects of acute exercise are encouraged. CONCLUSION: All in all, and to our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis quantitatively summarizing the relevant literature on the associations between P300-ERP correlates, acute exercise, and its positive influence on attention and cognitive performance in healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: According to animal and human epidemiologic studies, exposure to outdoor light at night (LAN) may cause circadian disruption, which may disturb sleep quality and lead to incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: We followed 283,374 persons from 2006 through 2020. Outdoor LAN exposure was estimated using satellite data for individual address with 500 m2 scale buffer during follow-up. Incidence of T2DM was confirmed by hospital inpatient records. We identified potential confounders by a directed acyclic graph, including demographic, genetic, individual and regional level socioeconomic status, and environmental risk factors, and calculated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through time-varying Cox proportional hazard model. Furthermore, we examined the association of outdoor LAN with a defined health sleep scores and moderation of genetic predisposition and shift work on the relationship of outdoor LAN and incident T2DM. RESULTS: We identified 7,775 incident T2DM cases over 3,027,505 person-years. Higher outdoor LAN exposures were significantly associated with higher risk of T2DM. The estimated HR for incident T2DM with an interquartile range (IQR: 11.22 nW/cm2/sr) increase in outdoor LAN was 1.05 (95%CI: 1.01, 1.09) in the fully adjusted model. Participants who lived in the highest quarter of outdoor LAN area were more likely to develop T2DM (HR: 1.14,95%CI: 1.02, 1.27). Besides, those who were exposed to higher levels of outdoor LAN had poorer sleep quality. No moderation role of PRS on outdoor LAN-induced T2DM observed both on the multiplicated and additive scale. The hazards of outdoor LAN were observed in those who never owned a night shift work. CONCLUSION: Although further work is required to clarify potential mechanisms, our findings indicate that exposure to residential outdoor LAN may contribute to T2DM risk and low sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution may increase the risk of obesity, but living in greener space may reduce this risk. Epidemiological evidence, however, is inconsistent. METHODS: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2015), we conducted a nationwide cohort study of 7424 adults. We measured overweight/obesity according to body mass index. We used annual average ground-level air pollutants, including ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5), to demonstrate air pollution levels. We used the Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to measure greenness exposure. We used time-varying Cox proportional hazard regression models to analyze the connections among air pollution, greenness, and the development of overweight/obesity in middle-aged and older adults in China. We also conducted mediation analyses to examine the mediating effects of air pollution. RESULTS: We found that lower risk of overweight/obesity was associated with more greenness exposure and lower levels of air pollution. We identified that an interquartile increment in NDVI was correlated with a lower hazard ratio (HR) of becoming overweight or obese (HR = 0.806, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.754-0.862). Although a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and NO2 was correlated with higher risks (HR = 1.049, 95% CI = 1.022-1.075, HR = 1.376, 95% CI = 1.264-1.499). Effects of PM2.5 on being overweight or obese were stronger in men than in women. According to the mediation analysis, PM2.5 and NO2 mediated 8.85% and 19.22% of the association between greenness and being overweight or obese. CONCLUSIONS: An increased risk of being overweight or obese in middle-aged and older adults in China was associated with long-term exposure to higher levels of PM2.5 and NO2. This risk was reduced through NDVI exposure, and the associations were partially mediated by air pollutants. To verify these findings, fine-scale studies are needed.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a subtype of stroke that would cause high mortality and disability. Environmental factors may play an important role in the incident risk of ICH. Evidence on how long-term road traffic noise exposure affects incident ICH is still scarce, and whether green space has a modification effect is unknown. We conducted a prospective analysis based on UK Biobank to assess the longitudinal association between road traffic noise exposure and incident ICH, and the potential modification of green space. METHODS: Algorithms based on medical records and linkage were utilized to identify ICH incident cases in the UK Biobank. The Common Noise Assessment Methods in Europe noise model was used to calculate the road traffic noise exposure at the residential level. The relationship between weighted average 24-h road traffic noise level (Lden) and incident ICH was assessed using Cox proportional hazard models, and the modification effect of green space was examined using stratified analysis with interaction terms. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 12.5 years, 1 459 incident ICH cases were ascertained in the 402 268 baseline individuals. After adjustment for potential confounders, Lden was significantly related to an elevated risk of incident ICH with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.14 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.28) for a 10 dB [A] increment. The detrimental influence of Lden on ICH remained stable after adjustment for air pollution. Furthermore, green space modified the association between Lden exposure and incident ICH (Pinteraction = 0.035), and no association was found for higher green space. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term residential road traffic noise exposure was associated with an increased risk of ICH, but only for those who live in areas with less green space, indicating that green space may alleviate the negative impacts of road traffic noise exposure on ICH.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have linked exposure to road traffic noise or air pollution with incident type 2 diabetes (T2D), but investigation on their co-exposure was limited and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that long-term co-exposure to road traffic noise and air pollution increases the risk of incident T2D via the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS: This prospective study included 390,834 participants in UK Biobank. Cumulative risk index (CRI), the health-based weighted levels of multiple exposures, was applied to characterize the co-exposure to 24-hour road traffic noise (Lden), particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Lden was modeled by the Common Noise Assessment Methods in Europe and air pollutant levels were measured by the Land Use Regression model at participants' residential addresses. Incident T2D was ascertained through linkages to inpatient hospital records. MetS was defined by five (central obesity, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure) or six factors (C-reactive protein additionally). Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association between environmental exposures and incident T2D, and mediation analyses were applied to investigate the role of MetS. RESULTS: After a median of 10.9 years of follow-up, 13,214 (3.4%) incident T2D cases were ascertained. The exposure to Lden, PM2.5, and NO2, as well as their co-exposure, were significantly associated with an elevated risk of incident T2D, with HRs of 1.03 (95%CI: 1.00, 1.05) per 3.5 dB(A) increase in Lden, 1.05 (95%CI: 1.01, 1.10) per 1.3 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5, 1.07 (95%CI: 1.02, 1.11) per 9.8 µg/m3 increase in NO2, and 1.06 (95%CI: 1.02, 1.09) per interquartile range increase in CRI. MetS significantly mediated 43.5%- 54.7% of the CRI-T2D relationship. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term co-exposure to road traffic noise and air pollution is associated with an elevated risk of incident T2D, which may partly be mediated by MetS.

PURPOSE: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) often results in impaired functional hearing and accidental injuries; thus, reducing military performance and endangering flight safety. While a few studies addressing laterality (left-right ear differences) and NIHL incidence between fixed-winged (jet-fighter) and rotary-wing (helicopter) aircrafts yielded inconsistent results, little is known about the NIHL profile among different types of jet-fighter pilots. This study aims to conduct a fine-grained examination of NIHL among Airforce jet pilots, with planned comparisons of laterality and aircraft type, along with the goal to compare the sensitivity of different hearing indices in predicting military pilot NIHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilizes the health and hearing data of 1025 Taiwanese Air Force Military pilots from the 2019 Taiwanese physical examination database to assess the changes in their hearing thresholds, and evaluate their risk for NIHL. RESULTS: Our results showed that, among available military aircraft types, the trainer aircraft and M2000-5 jet-fighter had the highest risk of NIHL, in addition to a left ear inferiority found in the overall population of military pilots. Among the three hearing indices used in this study -the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) three-point hearing index, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) three-point hearing index, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's (AAO-HNS) high-frequency three-point hearing index-, the OSHA the AAO-HNS were the most sensitive. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest a better noise protection for trainer and M2000-5 pilots, especially for the left ear, is warranted.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted significant attention for promising applications in energy-saving logic and robust memory devices. However, most 2D magnets discovered so far typically feature drawbacks for practical applications due to low critical temperatures. Herein, we synthesize ultrathin room-temperature (RT) magnetic Fe7Se8 nanoflakes via the space-confined chemical vapor deposition method. It is found that the appropriate supply and control of Se concentration in the reaction chamber is crucial for synthesizing high-quality nonstoichiometric Fe7Se8 nanoflakes. Cryogenic electrical and magnetic characterizations reveal the emergence of spin reorientation at ∼130 K and the survival of long-range magnetic ordering up to room temperature. The RT magnetic domain structures with different thicknesses are also uncovered by magnetic force microscopy. Moreover, theoretical calculations confirm the spin configuration and metallic band structure. The outstanding characteristics exhibited by Fe7Se8 nanoflakes, including RT magnetism, spin reorientation property, and good electrical conductivity, make them a potential candidate for RT spintronics.

Damage-free transfer of large-area two-dimensional (2D) materials is indispensable to unleash their full potentials in a wide range of electronic, photonic, and biochemical applications. However, the all-surface nature of 2D materials renders many of them vulnerable to surrounding environments, especially etchants and water involved during wet transfer process. Up to now, a scalable and damage-free transfer method for sensitive 2D materials is still lacking. Here, we report a general damage-free transfer method for sensitive 2D materials. The as-transferred 2D materials exhibit well-preserved structural integrity and unaltered physical properties. We further develop a facile TEM sample preparation technique that allows direct recycling of materials on TEM grids with high fidelity. This recycling technique provides an unprecedented opportunity to precisely relate structural characterization with physical/chemical/electrical probing for the same samples. This method can be readily generalized to diverse nanomaterials for large-area damage-free transfer and enables in-depth investigation of structure-property relationship.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs). A recent study has shown that AOPP-induced renal tubular injury is mediated by the (pro)renin receptor (PRR). However, it is unclear whether the PRR decoy inhibitor PRO20 can protect against renal damage related to AOPPs in vivo. In this study, we examined the role of the PRR in rats with AOPP-induced renal oxidative damage. Male SD rats were subjected to unilateral nephrectomy, and after a four-day recuperation period, they were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6/group) for four weeks: control (CTR), unmodified rat serum albumin (RSA, 50 mg/kg/day via tail-vein injection), AOPPs-RSA (50 mg/kg/day via tail-vein injection), and AOPPs-RSA + PRO20 (50 mg/kg/day via tail-vein injection + 500 µg/kg/day via subcutaneous injection) groups. PRO20 was administered 3 days before AOPPs-RSA injection. Renal histopathology evaluation was performed by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining, and biochemical parameters related to renal injury and oxidative stress biomarkers were evaluated. The expression of related indicators was quantified by RT-qPCR and immunoblotting analysis. In the results, rats in the AOPPs-RSA group exhibited higher levels of albuminuria, inflammatory cell infiltration, and tubular dilation, along with upregulation of oxidative stress, profibrotic and proinflammatory factors, and elevation of AOPP levels. Meanwhile, in the PRO20 group, these were significantly reduced. Moreover, the levels of almost all components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and Nox4-dependent H2O2 production in urine and the kidneys were elevated by AOPPs-RSA, while they were suppressed by PRO20. Furthermore, AOPPs-RSA rats showed elevated kidney expression of the PRR and soluble PRR (sPRR) and increased renal excretion of sPRR. In summary, these findings suggest that PRR inhibition may serve as a protective mechanism against AOPP-induced nephropathy by inhibiting the intrarenal RAS and Nox4-derived H2O2 mechanisms.

In this study, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) and molecular dynamics simulations (MD) were used to construct models of activated carbon with hydroxyl-modified hexachlorobenzene basic unit contents of 0%, 12.5%, 25%, 35% and 50%. The mechanism of adsorption of carbon disulfide (CS2) by hydroxyl-modified activated carbon was then studied. It is found that the introduction of hydroxyl functional groups will improve the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for carbon disulfide. As far as the simulation results are concerned, the activated carbon model containing 25% hydroxyl modified activated carbon basic units has the best adsorption performance for carbon disulfide molecules at 318 K and atmospheric pressure. At the same time, the changes in the porosity, accessible surface area of the solvent, ultimate diameter and maximum pore diameter of the activated carbon model also led to great differences in the diffusion coefficient of carbon disulfide molecules in different hydroxyl-modified activated carbons. However, the same adsorption heat and temperature had little effect on the adsorption of carbon disulfide molecules.
