RESUMO

Hydrogen bonding greatly influences rates and equilibrium positions of chemical reactions, conformations, and sometimes even stereochemistry. This study reports on tetranitrofluorenone oximate, a novel dye capable of naked-eye detection of hydrogen-bond donating species (HBDs) and of rapid determination of H-bond donation strength by hypsochromic shift monitoring. In addition, the molecule possesses atropisomeric conformations, of M and P configuration, as evidenced in solid and solution state studies by X-ray diffraction and electronic circular dichroism (ECD), respectively. In the latter case, enantiopure bis-thioureas were the most effective HBDs to promote a chiral induction (diastereoselective recognition, Pfeiffer effect); the ECD results being rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. Based on these experiments, bis-thioureas were used as chiral reagents in asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of structurally-related nitrones; the ECD sensing of the stereoinduction between bis-thioureas and the oximate serving as an indirect method of selection of the most effective HBD for asymmetric synthesis.

RESUMO

Cationic triangulenes, and related helicenes, constitute a rich class of dyes and fluorophores, usually absorbing and emitting light at low energy, in the orange to red domains. Recently, to broaden the scope of applications, regioselective late-stage functionalizations on these core moieties have been developed. For instance, with the introduction of electron-donating groups (EDGs), important bathochromic shifts are observed pushing absorptions towards or in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral domain while emissive properties disappear essentially completely. Herein, to upset this drawback, acetylene derivatives of cationic diazaoxa triangulenes (DAOTA) and [4]helicenes are prepared (16 examples). Contrary to other EDG-functionalized derivatives, C≡C- functionalized products remain broadly fluorescent, with red-shifted absorptions (Δλabs up to 25 nm) and emissions (Δλem up to 73 nm, ΦPL up to 51 %). Quite interestingly, a general dynamic stereoisomerism phenomenon is evidenced for the compounds derived from achiral DAOTA cores. At low temperature in 1 H NMR spectroscopy (218 K), N-CH2 protons become diastereotopic with chemical shifts differences (Δδ) as high as +1.64 ppm. The signal coalescence occurs around 273 K with a barrier of ∼12 kcal mol-1 . This phenomenon is due to planar chiral conformations (Sp and Rp configurations), induced by the geometry of the alkyl (n-propyl) side-chains next to the acetylenic substituents. Ion pairing studies with Δ-TRISPHAT anion not only confirm the occurrence of the chiral conformations but evidence a moderate but definite asymmetric induction from the chiral anion onto the cations. Finally, DFT calculations offer a valuable insight on the geometries, the corresponding stereodynamics and also on the very large difference in NMR for some of the diastereotopic protons.

RESUMO

Chiral quinacridines react up to four times, step-by-step, with α-diazomalonates under RuII and RhII catalysis. By selecting the catalyst, [CpRu(CH3 CN)3 ][PF6 ] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl) or Rh2 (oct)4 , chemo and regioselective insertions of derived metal carbenes are achieved in favor of mono- or bis-functionalized malonate derivatives, respectively, (r.r.>49 : 1, up to 77 % yield, 12 examples). This multi-introduction of malonate groups is particularly useful to tune optical and chemical properties such as absorption, emission or Brønsted acidity but also cellular bioimaging. Density-functional theory further elucidates the origin of the carbene insertion selectivity and also showcases the importance of conformations in the optical response.

RESUMO

The high-spin (S = 5/2) meridional diastereoisomer of [FeIII(tpena)]2+ (tpena = N,N,N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylendiamine-N'-acetate), mer-[Fe(tpena)]2+, undergoes photolytic CO2 release to produce an iron(II) intermediate of a radical dihydroimidazopyridine ligand (L•). The structure of this unprecedented transient iron(II)(L•) complex is supported by UV-vis and Mössbauer spectroscopies, DFT calculations, as well as the X-ray structural characterization of an µ-oxo iron(III) complex of the oxidized derivative of L•, namely, [FeIII2O(Cl)2(L+)2](ClO4)4(MeCN)2 (L+ = 2-(2-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)ethyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-4-ium). [FeIII2O(Cl)2(L+)2]4+ is obtained only in the absence of O2. Under aerobic conditions, O2 will intercept the iron(II)(L•) complex to form a putative Fe(III)-alkylperoxide complex which cascades to an iron(II) complex of SBPy3 (SBPy3 = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine-N-ethyl-2-pyridine-2-aldimine). Thus, through different oxidative pathways, the unknown ligand L+ or SBPy3 forms by loss of a one-carbon-atom or a two-carbon-atom unit, respectively, from the glycyl arm of tpena. Acceleration of the photodecarboxylation step is achieved by addition of thiocyanate because of transient formation of a more photoreactive NCS- adduct of [Fe(tpena)]2+. This has allowed for kinetic observation of the reaction of [FeII(L•)]2+ with O2 which is, unexpectedly, promoted also by light. We propose that this corresponds to the energy needed for the conversion of the ring-closed radical ligand L• to a ring-opened tautomer to allow for O2 insertion between the C and Fe atoms of the iron(II) complex.

RESUMO

The computational characterization of the full catalytic cycle for the synthesis of indoline from the reaction between iodoacetanilide and a terminal alkene catalyzed by a nickel complex and a photoactive ruthenium species is presented. A variety of oxidation states of nickel, Ni0 , NiI , NiII , and NiIII , is shown to participate in the mechanism. Ni0 is necessary for the oxidative addition of the C-I bond, which goes through a NiI intermediate and results in a NiII species. The NiII species inserts into the alkene, but does not undergo the reductive elimination necessary for C-N bond formation. This oxidatively induced reductive elimination can be accomplished only after oxidation to NiIII by the photoactive ruthenium species. All the reaction steps are computationally characterized, and the barriers for the single-electron transfer steps calculated using a modified version of the Marcus Theory.

RESUMO

The dual function of the N-F bond as an effective oxidant and subsequent nitrogen source in intramolecular aliphatic C-H functionalization reactions is explored. Copper catalysis is demonstrated to exercise full regio- and chemoselectivity control, which opens new synthetic avenues to nitrogenated heterocycles with predictable ring sizes. For the first time, a uniform catalysis manifold has been identified for the construction of both pyrrolidine and piperidine cores. The individual steps of this new copper oxidation catalysis were elucidated by control experiments and computational studies, clarifying the singularity of the N-F function and characterizing the catalytic cycle to be based on a copper(I/II) manifold.

RESUMO

The iron(III) complex [Fe(tpena)]2+ (tpena = N, N, N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylendiamine- N'-acetate) undergoes irreversible O2-dependent N-demethylcarboxylation to afford [FeII(SBPy3)(MeCN)]2+ (SBPy3 = N, N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine- N-ethyl-2-pyridine-2-aldimine), when irradiated with near-UV light. The loss of a mass equivalent to the glycyl group in a process involving consecutive C-C and C-N cleavages is documented by the measurement of the sequential production of CO2 and formaldehyde, respectively. Time-resolved UV-vis absorption, Mössbauer, EPR, and Raman spectroscopy have allowed the spectroscopic characterization of two iron-based intermediates along the pathway. The first of these, proposed to be a low-spin iron(II)-radical ligand complex, reacts with O2 in the rate-determining step to produce a putative alkylperoxide complex. DFT calculations suggest that this evolves into an Fe(IV)-oxo species, which can abstract a hydrogen atom from a cis methylene group of the ligand to give the second spectroscopically identified intermediate, a high-spin iron(III)-hydroxide of the product oxidized ligand, [FeIII(OH)(SBPy3)]2+. Reduction and exchange of the cohydroxo/water ligand produces the crystallographically characterized products [FeII(SBPy3)(X)]2+/3+, X = MeCN, [Zn(tpena)]+.

RESUMO

We have recently developed a method for the synthesis of pyrrolidines and piperidines via intramolecular C-H amination of N-fluoride amides using [Tp x CuL] complexes as precatalysts [Tp x = tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand and L = THF or CH3CN]. Herein, we report mechanistic studies on this transformation, which includes the isolation and structural characterization of a fluorinated copper(II) complex, [(TpiPr2OH)CuF] [TpiPr = hydrotris(3,5-diisopropylpyrazolyl)borate], pertinent to the mechanistic pathway. The effects of the nature of the Tp x ligand in the copper catalyst as well as of the halide in the N-X amides employed as reactants have been investigated both from experimental and computational perspectives.

RESUMO

Mechanochemistry is an emerging field with many potential applications in sustainable chemistry. But despite the growing interest in the field, its underlying mechanistic foundations are not fully understood yet. This work presents the application of computational tools, such as DFT calculations in continuum and microkinetic modeling, to the analysis of mechanically activated procedures. Two reactions reported in previous experimental publications were studied: (i) a series of Diels-Alder reactions and (ii) the synthesis of sulfonylguanidines. Calculations succeed in reproducing experimentally reported reaction times. The procedures were mostly standard, coupled with some sensitive choices in terms of starting concentrations and dielectric constant. This means that these particular reactions accelerated by ball milling followed the same mechanism as the equivalent reactions in solution. The implications of this result on the general picture of mechanochemical processes are discussed.

RESUMO

Malonate enol ethers are afforded in one step by condensation of cyclic ketones with α-diazomalonates under [CpRu(CH3CN)3][BArF] catalysis. The dual reactivity of these 2-vinyloxymalonates can be used to expand the classical range of cyclizations derived from carbonyl ylide intermediates.

RESUMO

Hexahydropyrazinoindoles were prepared in a single step from N-sulfonyl triazoles and imidazolidines. Under dirhodium catalysis, α-imino carbenes were generated and formed nitrogen ylide intermediates that, after subsequent aminal opening, afforded the pyrazinoindoles predominantly via formal [1,2]-Stevens and tandem Friedel-Crafts cyclizations. Of mechanistic importance, a regiodivergent reactivity was engineered through the use of a specific unsymmetrically substituted imidazolidine that promoted the exclusive formation of 8-membered ring 1,3,6-triazocines. Based on DFT calculations, an original Curtin-Hammett-like situation was demonstrated for the mechanism. Further derivatizations led to functionalized tetrahydropyrazinoindoles in high yields.

RESUMO

Photoelectrochemical cells that utilize water as a source of electrons are one of the most attractive solutions for the replacement of fossil fuels by clean and sustainable solar fuels. To achieve this, heterogeneous water oxidation catalysis needs to be mastered and properly understood. The search continues for a catalyst that is stable at the surface of electro(photo)anodes and can efficiently perform this reaction at the desired neutral pH. Here, we show how oligomeric Ru complexes can be anchored on the surfaces of graphitic materials through CH-π interactions between the auxiliary ligands bonded to Ru and the hexagonal rings of the graphitic surfaces, providing control of their molecular coverage. These hybrid molecular materials behave as molecular electroanodes that catalyse water oxidation to dioxygen at pH 7 with high current densities. This strategy for the anchoring of molecular catalysts on graphitic surfaces can potentially be extended to other transition metals and other catalytic reactions.
