RESUMO

Granulomas are organized aggregates of macrophages, often with characteristic morphological changes, and other immune cells. These evolutionarily ancient structures form in response to persistent particulate stimuli-infectious or noninfectious-that individual macrophages cannot eradicate. Granulomas evolved as protective responses to destroy or sequester particles but are frequently pathological in the context of foreign bodies, infections, and inflammatory diseases. We summarize recent findings that suggest that the granulomatous response unfolds in a stepwise program characterized by a series of macrophage activations and transformations that in turn recruit additional cells and produce structural changes. We explore why different granulomas vary and the reasons that granulomas are protective and pathogenic. Understanding the mechanisms and role of granuloma formation may uncover new therapies for the multitude of granulomatous diseases that constitute serious medical problems while enhancing the protective function of granulomas in infections.

Mechano-immunity, the intersection between cellular or tissue mechanics and immune cell function, is emerging as an important factor in many inflammatory diseases. Mechano-sensing defines how cells detect mechanical changes in their environment. Mechano-response defines how cells adapt to such changes, e.g. form synapses, signal or migrate. Inflammasomes are intracellular immune sensors that detect changes in tissue and cell homoeostasis during infection or injury. We and others recently found that mechano-sensing of tissue topology (swollen tissue), topography (presence and distribution of foreign solid implant) or biomechanics (stiffness), alters inflammasome activity. Once activated, inflammasomes induce the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, but also change cellular mechanical properties, which influence how cells move, change their shape, and interact with other cells. When overactive, inflammasomes lead to chronic inflammation. This clearly places inflammasomes as important players in mechano-immunity. Here, we discuss a model whereby inflammasomes integrate pathogen- and tissue-injury signals, with changes in tissue mechanics, to shape the downstream inflammatory responses and allow cell and tissue mechano-adaptation. We will review the emerging evidence that supports this model.

Implants are widely used in medical applications and yet macrophage-mediated foreign body reactions caused by implants severely impact their therapeutic effects. Although the extensive use of multiple surface modifications has been introduced to provide some mitigation of fibrosis, little is known about how macrophages recognize the stiffness of the implant and thus influence cell behaviors. Here, we demonstrated that macrophage stiffness sensing leads to differential inflammatory activation, resulting in different degrees of fibrosis. The potential mechanism for macrophage stiffness sensing in the early adhesion stages tends to involve cell membrane deformations on substrates with different stiffnesses. Combining theory and experiments, we show that macrophages exert traction stress on the substrate through adhesion and altered membrane curvature, leading to the uneven distribution of the curvature-sensing protein Baiap2, resulting in cytoskeleton remodeling and inflammation inhibition. This study introduces a physical model feedback mechanism for early cellular stiffness sensing based on cell membrane deformation, offering perspectives for future material design and targeted therapies.

Macrophages undergo plasma membrane fusion and cell multinucleation to form multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) such as osteoclasts in bone, Langhans giant cells (LGCs) as part of granulomas or foreign-body giant cells (FBGCs) in reaction to exogenous material. How multinucleation per se contributes to functional specialization of mature mononuclear macrophages remains poorly understood in humans. Here, we integrate comparative transcriptomics with functional assays in purified mature mononuclear and multinucleated human osteoclasts, LGCs and FBGCs. Strikingly, in all three types of MGCs, multinucleation causes a pronounced downregulation of macrophage identity. We show enhanced lysosome-mediated intracellular iron homeostasis promoting MGC formation. The transition from mononuclear to multinuclear state is accompanied by cell specialization specific to each polykaryon. Enhanced phagocytic and mitochondrial function associate with FBGCs and osteoclasts, respectively. Moreover, human LGCs preferentially express B7-H3 (CD276) and can form granuloma-like clusters in vitro, suggesting that their multinucleation potentiates T cell activation. These findings demonstrate how cell-cell fusion and multinucleation reset human macrophage identity as part of an advanced maturation step that confers MGC-specific functionality.

SignificanceImplantable electronic medical devices (IEMDs) are used for some clinical applications, representing an exciting prospect for the transformative treatment of intractable conditions such Parkinson's disease, deafness, and paralysis. The use of IEMDs is limited at the moment because, over time, a foreign body reaction (FBR) develops at the device-neural interface such that ultimately the IEMD fails and needs to be removed. Here, we show that macrophage nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activity drives the FBR in a nerve injury model yet integration of an NLRP3 inhibitor into the device prevents FBR while allowing full healing of damaged neural tissue to occur.

Foreign body reaction (FBR) is a prevalent yet often overlooked pathological phenomenon, particularly within the field of biomedical implantation. The presence of FBR poses a heavy burden on both the medical and socioeconomic systems. This review seeks to elucidate the protein "fingerprint" of implant materials, which is generated by the physiochemical properties of the implant materials themselves. In this review, the activity of macrophages, the formation of foreign body giant cells (FBGCs), and the development of fibrosis capsules in the context of FBR are introduced. Additionally, the relationship between various implant materials and FBR is elucidated in detail, as is an overview of the existing approaches and technologies employed to alleviate FBR. Finally, the significance of implant components (metallic materials and non-metallic materials), surface CHEMISTRY (charge and wettability), and physical characteristics (topography, roughness, and stiffness) in establishing the protein "fingerprint" of implant materials is also well documented. In conclusion, this review aims to emphasize the importance of FBR on implant materials and provides the current perspectives and approaches in developing implant materials with anti-FBR properties.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular prosthetic grafts are widely used in vascular surgery; however, graft infection remains a major concern. Silver-coated vascular grafts have demonstrated anti-infection properties in clinical settings; however, whether the silver irons influence foreign body reaction or neointimal hyperplasia remains unclear. METHODS: Sodium alginate and hyaluronic acid (SA/HA) hydrogel patches loaded with rhodamine, with or without silver, were fabricated. Patches were implanted in the subcutaneous or abdominal cavity and inferior vena cava of rats. Samples were harvested on day 14 and examined via immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analyses. RESULTS: Silver hydrogel was found to decrease the foreign body reaction; after subcutaneous and abdominal cavity implantation in rats, the capsule was found to be thinner in the silver hydrogel group than in the control hydrogel group. The silver hydrogel group had fewer CD68-positive cells and proliferating cell nuclear antigen and interleukin-33 (IL-33) dual-positive cells than the control hydrogel group. Additionally, the silver hydrogel patch reduced the neointimal thickness after patch venoplasty in rats, and the number of IL-33- and IL-1ß-positive cells was lower than that in the control patch. CONCLUSION: Silver-loaded SA/HA hydrogel patches decreased the foreign body reaction and venous neointimal hyperplasia in rats by the inhibition of IL-33 expression.

Disease outbreaks are a major impediment to aquaculture production, and vaccines are integral for disease management. Vaccines can be expensive, vary in effectiveness, and come with adjuvant-induced adverse effects, causing fish welfare issues and negative economic impacts. Three-dimensional biopolymer hydrogels are an appealing new technology for vaccine delivery in aquaculture, with the potential for controlled release of multiple immunomodulators and antigens simultaneously, action as local depots, and tunable surface properties. This research examined the intraperitoneal implantation of a cross-linked TEMPO cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) hydrogel formulated with a Vibrio anguillarum bacterin in Atlantic salmon with macroscopic and microscopic monitoring to 600-degree days post-implantation. Results demonstrated a modified passive integrated transponder tagging (PITT) device allowed for implantation of the hydrogel. However, the Atlantic salmon implanted with TOCNF hydrogels exhibited a significant foreign body response (FBR) compared to sham-injected negative controls. The FBR was characterized by gross and microscopic external and visceral proliferative lesions, granulomas, adhesions, and fibrosis surrounding the hydrogel using Speilberg scoring of the peritoneum and histopathology of the body wall and coelom. Acutely, gross monitoring displayed rapid coagulation of blood in response to the implantation wound with development of fibrinous adhesions surrounding the hydrogel by 72 h post-implantation consistent with early stage FBR. While these results were undesirable for aquaculture vaccines, this work informs on the innate immune response to an implanted biopolymer hydrogel in Atlantic salmon and directs future research using cellulose nanomaterial formulations in Atlantic salmon for a new generation of aquaculture vaccine technology.

OBJECTIVES AND STUDY: Accidental foreign body ingestion (FBI) is a common pediatric referral concern. In contrast, recurrent and intentional FBI (RIFBI) is infrequent and associated with greater endoscopic and surgical intervention in adults. Although pediatric guidelines exist for FBI, the risk and therapeutic implications of RIFBI are not addressed. An anonymous international survey on pediatric gastroenterologist experience with RIFBI was distributed. METHODS: A 33-item REDCap© survey was distributed via email to pediatric gastroenterologists identified through mailing and email lists obtained from pediatric gastroenterology professional organizations. RESULTS: During 9-12/2021 we accrued 202 completed surveys. Respondents were from 27 countries and across the career span. Eighty percent reported experience with RIFBI; 74% reported seeing ≤ 3 patients with RIFBI within the past 24 months and 4% reported seeing ≥ 6. Of those who treated RIFBI, 38% reported an average number of annual ingestions per patient was ≥5. Frequent morbidity but not mortality was reported. Half reported adherence to FBI guidelines. Later-career endoscopists treated RIFBI more aggressively than accidental ingestion. Ninety-six percent noted that patients with RIFBI had psychiatric comorbidities. Providers at academic medical centers reported referring to behavioral health more than those in other settings. CONCLUSION: Most gastroenterologists surveyed reported encountering RFBI several times a year and in patients with psychiatric comorbidities. Greater likelihood of adverse outcomes associated with endoscopy was reported. Most reported referral to behavioral health and few had RIFBI management protocols. A broader spectrum of psychologic comorbidities in the pediatric population with RIFBI, notably depression and autism spectrum disorder, were reported.

Foreign body ingestion is a common clinical occurrence worldwide, with high morbidity in the pediatric population and in adult patients with intentional attempts. Coins and button battery ingestions are more common among children. Bone impaction and swallowed dentures are usually seen in older adults. While most ingested foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract spontaneously with no complications, some require endoscopic and/or surgical intervention. Complications such as pharyngoesophageal ulceration, perforation, stricture, and deep neck infection can develop without timely diagnosis and management. The purpose of this article is to familiarize radiologists with the imaging approach to assess for characteristics and impacted locations of ingested foreign bodies in the neck.

BACKGROUND: Upper gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion is a common digestive tract emergency, of which completely embedded ones were challenging for most endoscopists. We aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic submucosal fenestration in the treatment of completely embedded upper gastrointestinal foreign bodies. METHODS: From December 2018 to December 2021, 19 patients with completely embedded upper gastrointestinal foreign bodies who underwent endoscopic submucosal fenestration in Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University were included. The safety, efficacy, and outcome were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Among the 19 patients, 15 foreign bodies were embedded in the esophagus, 3 located in the gastric wall, and 1 located in the duodenal bulb. The foreign bodies were successfully managed in 12 cases, and 7 failed after attempts of repeated exploration. Two cases confirmed completely traversing into the mediastinum were successfully removed after transfer to surgery. One case had retrieval of a foreign body in a half-year examination. Till now, 3 failed patients had great relief of symptoms and only one patient claimed occasional thoracodynia. Of note, there were neither serious adverse events, nor long-term complications during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: In disposing of foreign bodies completely embedded in the upper gastrointestinal tract, ESF is a safe and effective alternative to surgery.

BACKGROUND: Ingested foreign bodies may become impacted in the upper gastrointestinal tract, requiring endoscopic removal. AIMS: To establish and validate a nomogram to determine the risk of complications following endoscopic foreign body removal. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 1510 adult patients who underwent endoscopic removal of ingested foreign bodies between January 2019 and December 2022. All participants were randomly allocated in a 7:3 ratio to the training (n = 1057) and validation (n = 453) cohorts. A nomogram for the development of major complications associated with endoscopic foreign body removal was established based on risk factors identified by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Four independent risk factors for the development of major complications were identified by multivariate regression analysis: older age, impaction time > 24 h, type of foreign body (animal bones and jujube pits), and number of pressure points exerted on the digestive tract wall (one and ≥ two). The nomogram constructed using these factors showed favorable discriminatory values, with an area under the curve of 0.76 (95% confidence interval, 0.73-0.78) in the training cohort and 0.74 (95% confidence interval, 0.72-0.76) in the validation cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Older patients who ingested bones or jujube pits with more pressure points exerted on the digestive tract wall more than 24 h earlier should be considered most at risk of major complications after endoscopic removal of foreign bodies. The nomogram established in this study can be conveniently used to assess patients and develop treatment plans for the management of foreign body ingestion.

BACKGROUND: Human fishing activities have significantly affect environmental concern for marine ecosystems, conservation of marine mammals, and human health. Coastal cetaceans are highly vulnerable to ingestion of fishing gear, bycatching, or entanglement, all of which can be fatal for these animals. In particular, certain coastal dolphins and porpoises are heavily impacted by fishing gear such as angling gear or stownet, as their food often overlap with the target fish species of human fisheries. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a case of an Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) beached on the coast of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, with ingestion of fishing gear and severe Anisakis infection. Although this species inhabits waters ranging from the Persian Gulf to Taiwan, several stranded carcasses have been reported on Jeju Island in recent years. Post-mortem computed tomography revealed a bundle of four fishing hooks in the forestomach, along with nylon lines and steel lines with connectors, which were assumed to be angling gear for Jeju hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus). Further necroscopic investigation revealed that the forestomach contained a large number of Anisakis spp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae). Histological examination revealed a thickened forestomach wall with pinpoint and volcanic ulcerations, a thickened layer of stratified squamous epithelium, and infiltrated stroma in the squamous epithelium. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes the urgent need to address the impact of fishing activities on marine mammals, marine litter pollution, and the bycatch problem in Korean seawater. In addition, the occurrence of N. phocaenoides in seawater around Jeju Island should be raised in future geographical ecology or veterinary pathology studies and when its distribution is updated.

Nitric oxide (NO) release from S-nitrosothiol-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles imbedded in the diffusion limiting layer of a glucose sensor has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for mitigating the foreign body response common to sensor implantation, resulting in improved analytical performance. With respect to potential clinical translation of this approach, the effects of sterilization on NO-releasing biosensors require careful evaluation, as NO donor chemistry is sensitive to temperature and environment. Herein, we evaluated the influence of multiple sterilization methods on 1) sterilization success; 2) NO payload; and 3) sensor performance to establish the commercialization potential of NO-releasing glucose sensors. Sensors were treated with ethylene oxide gas, the most common sterilization method for intricate medical devices, which led to undesirable (i.e., premature) release of NO. To reduce NO loss, alternative sterilization methods that were studied included exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and immersion in 70% ethanol (EtOH). Sterilization cycle times required to reach a 10-6 sterility assurance level were determined for both UV light and 70% EtOH against Gram-negative and -positive bacteria. The longest sterilization cycle times (258 s and 628 s for 70% EtOH and UV light, respectively) resulted in a negligible impact on benchtop sensor performance. However, sterilization with 70% ethanol resulted in a reduced NO-release duration. Ultraviolet light exposure for ~10 min proved successful at eliminating bacteria without compromising NO payloads or durations and presents as the most promising method for sterilization of these sensors. In addition, storage of NO-releasing sensor membranes at -20 and -80°C resulted in preservation of NO release for 6 and 12 months, respectively.

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a common cause of pediatric morbidity, but a standardized protocol to guide decision-making about bronchoscopy is lacking. We aimed to validate a new Foreign body aspiration score (FOBAS) for the pediatric emergency department (ED). Patients aged 0-18 years referred to the ED for suspected FBA were prospectively enrolled. FOBAS was calculated according to clinical features of a choking episode, sudden cough, exposure to nuts, absence of fever and rhinitis, stridor, and unilateral auscultatory and radiological findings. FBA risk was evaluated based on the total score (low, 1-3; moderate, 4-6; high, 7-10). Low-risk children were discharged from the ED and followed clinically. Moderate-risk children were hospitalized and evaluated by a pediatric pulmonologist, and high-risk children were referred directly for therapeutic bronchoscopy. Among the 100 enrolled children (59% males; median age 20 [interquartile range 11-39] months), a foreign body was diagnosed in 1/49 (2%), 14/41 (34.1%), and 9/10 (90%) with low, moderate, and high FOBAS, respectively (P < .001). Logistic regression indicated a higher risk for FBA with higher scores. The odds ratio for each additional point was 2.75 (95% confidence interval 1.78-4.24), and FOBAS showed a high predictive value for FBA (area under the curve 0.89). FOBAS implementation significantly reduced the rate of negative bronchoscopies, from 67.4% annually during 2016-2019 to 50% in 2020 (P = .042). CONCLUSION: FOBAS reliably predicts FBA in cases of suspected FBA and improves management and in-hospital decision-making. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Foreign body aspiration is a major cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality. • Currently, there is no unified protocol for children referred to the emergency department for suspected FBA, therefore, a well-defined algorithm is needed to improve the decision-making process. WHAT IS NEW: • The pediatric Foreign body aspiration score (FOBAS) is a new, prospectively validated clinical score that shows high sensitivity and specificity for the presence of FBA in children. • FOBAS reduces unnecessary admissions and invasive procedures and leads to better clinical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic intraocular foreign bodies can be removed with magnetized disposable forceps. Aim of this study is to compare the forceps magnetizability of different size, form and manufacturer. METHODS: The forceps were magnetized using an established procedure. The inducible magnetic flux density was measured at the tip of the forceps. The mass that can be lifted with the magnetized forceps was then tested using steel balls in BSS solution. The weight of the metal parts of the forceps was measured. RESULTS: The magnetic flux density that could be induced, the weight of the steel balls that could be lifted and the mass of stainless steel used in the forceps were as follows: Alcon end-grasping 23G: 7.12 mT, 87.43 mg, 1191 mg; Alcon end-grasping 25G: 6.43 mT, 87.43 mg, 1189 mg; Alcon serrated: 4.39 mT, 63.78 mg, 1284 mg; Alcon serrated 23G: 3.62 mT, 13.74 mg, 1200 mg; Alcon serrated 25G: 2.4 mT, 13.74 mg, 1195 mg; DORC end-grasping 23G: 5.52 mT, 32.54 mg, 153 mg; Synergetics end-grasping 23G: 4.35 mT, 16.37 mg, 193 mg; Vitreq BV end-grasping 23G: 2.65 mT, none, 88 mg. DISCUSSION: The magnetizability of a disposable microforceps seems to depend on the mass of steel at the tip of the forceps. The structure of the iron lattice could have an even greater influence. Not every disposable forceps can be sufficiently magnetized for this technique.

PURPOSE: Retained foreign objects (RFOs) can place patients undergoing cataract surgery at risk for significant vision-threatening complications. In this systematic review, we examine the characteristics, clinical outcomes, and management of RFOs originating from surgical instruments or the surgical field after routine cataract surgery. METHODS: Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched five databases in June 2023. The inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed, full-text, English-language articles describing RFOs after routine cataract surgery. Studies that described non-routine cataract surgeries, patients with a history of ocular trauma, or organic RFOs were excluded. Two investigators independently extracted data and appraised the methodological quality of each study using Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies were included in our qualitative synthesis describing metal, fiber, and plastic RFOs. Typically, the RFOs were detected during surgery or slit-lamp examination. Presentations of patients with metal or fiber RFOs varied, with some being asymptomatic. Patients with plastic RFOs were usually symptomatic, often with decreased visual acuity and/or anterior chamber inflammation. Metal RFOs may have originated from metal fatigue from prolonged instrument usage and contact between surgical instruments, fiber RFOs from surgical wipes and gauzes, and plastic RFOs from instrument wrapping and intraocular lens defects. Factors such as location, biocompatibility, and secondary intraocular inflammation influenced the decision to surgically remove RFOs. Following surgical removal, the signs and symptoms resolved in most patients with RFOs. The studies' GRADE ratings indicated limitations in risk of bias and imprecision. CONCLUSION: The presentation and management of RFOs varied depending on the type of material. To prevent RFOs, clinicians should carefully inspect surgical instruments and packs and use fiber-free wipes, towels, and gauzes. Future studies should investigate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of different RFO prevention strategies.

INTRODUCTION: We occasionally encounter irregular marginated masses discovered incidentally in young individuals. In most cases, further investigations are conducted to assess the presence of a primary malignancy, as these masses often raise suspicions of malignancy. However, rare exceptional cases leave us perplexed. Granulomas arising from common lung infections and those induced by foreign substances can often pose challenge in distinguishing them from lung cancer. Therefore, we aimed to present a case of multiple pulmonary granulomatosis following cosmetic procedure. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman visited the hospital after an incidental discovery of an abnormal chest radiograph during a routine health check-up. Subsequent computed tomography (CT) scans showed worrisome lung nodules, leading to biopsies and positron emission tomography CT scans. Histological examination of the biopsied specimens revealed a chronic inflammatory reaction surrounded by multinucleated foreign body giant cells. Upon sharing the biopsy results with the patient and conducting additional history-taking, she had undergone various cosmetic procedures (botox injection, dermal filler treatments, and thread lifts) around the face and neck, approximately 5-6 months ago. It was hypothesized that these cosmetic materials might have led to the observed pulmonary granulomatosis. After 3 months of conservative care, a follow-up CT showed no change in the lesions. CONCLUSION: We present this case to underscore the importance of considering pulmonary foreign body granulomatosis as a potential differential diagnosis, especially when it closely resembles lung cancer, particularly following cosmetic injections.

INTRODUCTION: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration is increasingly used as a minimally invasive procedure in clinical settings. It is generally regarded as a safe procedure with high diagnostic accuracy. However, a complication involving a needle fracture that penetrated a nearby artery has not been reported during this procedure. CASE PRESENTATION: A male patient, 58 years of age, underwent endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration for a mediastinal lymph node biopsy at a local hospital. The aspiration needle fractured and penetrated from the right middle segmental bronchus into the right pulmonary artery. The patient was then transferred to our hospital. After conducting repeated chest imaging examinations to confirm the presence of the foreign body and holding multidisciplinary team consultations, we first inserted a deflated balloon catheter near the puncture site in the right middle segmental bronchus. Following the needle retrieval through a flexible bronchoscope, the balloon catheter was inflated to ensure local hemostasis. Follow-up evaluations revealed no further complications for this patient. CONCLUSION: Intragenic vascular injury can occur during endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration. Careful pre-procedure preparations should be planned to minimize complications. In patients experiencing complications due to needle penetration, consultation and coordination with a multidisciplinary team are essential to ensure the safe retrieval of the broken needle.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and efficiency of self-assembled intraocular rare earth magnet and forceps in removing intraocular foreign bodies(IOFBs) undergoing 25-gauge(G) pars plana vitrectomy. METHODS: A total of 30 patients with metallic IOFB underwent 25-G PPV were enrolled into this study. Self-assembled intraocular rare earth magnet were used in 15 patients(bar group), and forceps were used in 15 patients(forceps group). Success rate of removing IOFB, time taken to remove IOFB, incidence of IOFB slippage and fall, iatrogenic retinal damages were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in success rate of removing IOFBs between the groups(93.3% and 100%, P > 0.99). The median time taken of removing FB was significantly shorter in bar group than in forceps group(112 and 295 s, P = 0.001). None of the patients in bar group had IOFB slippage and fall, or related iatrogenic retinal damage in the process of removal. In forceps group, IOFB slippage and fall during removal were observed in 7 of 15(47.6%) patients, related iatrogenic retinal injuries were recorded in 6 of 15(40.0%) patients, both were significantly higher than bar group(P = 0.003 and P = 0.017, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with forceps, the assembled intraocular magnet can greatly reduce the possibility of IOFB slippage and fall, prevent related iatrogenic retinal damage, and shorten the time taken to remove IOFB. The assembled intraocular magnet can be an useful tool in removing metallic IOFBs in PPV.
