Higher prevalence of depression in females might be associated with sex-specific cortisol levels. Evidence exists that cortisol levels differ between healthy females and males, however a sex-specific association in depression has not been systematically assessed. Thus, the current study quantifies the existing literature on different cortisol parameters, i.e., basal cortisol, hair cortisol, cortisol awakening response (CAR), and cortisol stress reactivity comparing depressed females and males as well as sex-specific comparisons with healthy controls. Following an extensive literature research, fifty original articles were included. Depressed females had significantly higher hair cortisol, higher CAR, and lower cortisol stress reactivity compared to depressed males. In comparison with sex-matched controls, female patients had significantly higher evening basal cortisol, higher CAR and lower cortisol stress reactivity, and male patients had significantly higher general, morning and evening basal cortisol. Overall, sex as a fundamental driver of cortisol levels in depression needs to be taken into account.

Childhood adversity (CA), including childhood adverse life events, increases the risk for development of psychiatric disorders later in life. Both CA and psychiatric disorders are associated with structural brain changes and dysfunctional hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis. However, many studies investigated single diagnostic and single regions of interest of the brain, and did not take stress reactivity into account. We investigated associations of CA and cortisol levels with gray matter volume and cortical thickness, in a whole-brain manner. Primary analysis constituted of a transdiagnostic approach, followed by a moderation analysis to investigate the influence of diagnosis. Patients with stress-related and/or neurodevelopmental disorders and matched healthy controls underwent an magnetic resonance imaging scan, next to assessing hair cortisol levels and CA/life events. CA was reported by 62-72% of the patients versus 33% of the controls. Primary transdiagnostic linear regression analyses revealed that CA was not associated with gray matter volume, while childhood life events were associated with lower right thalamic volume. Hair cortisol was not associated with any lobe volume. None of the associations were moderated by diagnosis. In conclusion, CA is a risk factor that needs to be taken into account when investigating psychiatric disorders. Yet the relationship with structural brain changes and stress reactivity is less clear than postulated on the basis of more seed-based studies.

Mindfulness-based interventions have become a popular means to reduce stress. However, the specific mechanisms driving observed stress reduction remain understudied. The Monitor and Acceptance Theory suggests that the cultivation of monitoring and acceptance skills are necessary moderators of practice-induced stress reduction. In the context of the ReSource Project, a large healthy adult sample underwent three 3-month mental training modules targeting either attentional (Presence module), socio-affective (Affect module) or socio-cognitive skills (Perspective module). In the current study, the development of a range of inter-individual differences in mindfulness-, interoception- and compassion-related traits - which mapped to either monitoring or acceptance categories - was tracked. The relationship of these training-induced changes with cortisol stress reactivity after the three distinct 3-month training modules was explored. We found that stress sensitivity was particularly modulated by a differential adaptivity of one cultivated attentional capacity - Attention regulation - which predicted higher cortisol reactivity after mere attention training (Presence) but was associated with lower stress-induced cortisol release after additional socio-affective and socio-cognitive practice (Affect and Perspective). However, this effect did not survive multiple comparisons correction, and analyses were limited by the sample size available. We conclude that our study provides preliminary support of the Monitor and Acceptance Theory, lending weight to the advantage of primary attentional increases in order to fully harness the beneficial effects of socio-affective training, ultimately leading to stress reduction. Although training-induced increases in acceptance were not directly shown to contribute to lowering cortisol stress reactivity, the data suggest an additional benefit of socio-affective and socio-cognitive training that is not directly captured within the current analyses. Our study corroborates the importance of going beyond the training of attention monitoring to foster stress resilience, and highlights that mental training relies on the co-development of several interacting processes to successfully attenuate stress. Further exploring the overarching concept of acceptance in future research may prove beneficial to the theoretical framework of MAT, and in understanding the processes by which stress reduction occurs.

Sense of Okayness (SOK) is an emerging concept that describes a person's ability to remain stable and unshaken in the face of life transitions and hardships. This quality enables effective stress regulation and heightened tolerance to uncertainty. To investigate the possible role of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) in mediating the relationship between SOK and stress regulation among older individuals, an analytical sample of N = 69 participants (74% women) with a mean age of 78.75 years (SD age = 6.78) was recruited for a standardized cognitive assessment and stress induction. Baseline heart rate variability (HRV), measured via electrocardiogram (ECG), and SOK assessments were conducted prior to stress induction, along with a baseline cognitive evaluation. Subsequently, participants were subjected to a psychosocial stress paradigm, followed by either a 30-minute SOK elevation intervention (n = 40) or a control condition with nature sounds (n = 29). A second cognitive assessment was administered post-intervention, with continuous HRV measurement through ECG. The results revealed significant HRV changes due to the experimental intervention, though no significant differences were observed between the SOK intervention and control groups. Interestingly, individuals with high trait SOK displayed more stable HRV trajectories, exhibiting a smaller decline during the stress intervention and a milder increase during both the stressor and SOK intervention phases. Overall, these findings do suggest a significant association between SOK, parasympathetic activity, and stress reactivity. These results prompt further investigation into whether personality patterns, such as a strong SOK, may be linked to reduced vagal reactivity and better coping in old age.

Social environments modulate endocrine function, yet it is unclear whether individuals can become like their social partners in how they physiologically respond to stressors. This social transmission of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis reactivity could have long-term consequences for health and lifespan of individuals if their social partners react to stressors with an exaggerated HPA axis response. We tested whether glucocorticoid levels in response to stress of breeding partners changes after breeding depending on whether partners had similar or dissimilar postnatal conditions. We manipulated postnatal conditions by mimicking early life stress in zebra finch chicks (Taeniopygia guttata) via postnatal corticosterone exposure. When they reached adulthood, we created breeding pairs where the female and male had experienced either the same or different early life hormonal treatment (corticosterone or control). Before and after breeding, we obtained blood samples within 3 min and after 10 min or 30 min of restraint stress (baseline, cort10, cort30). We found that corticosterone levels of individuals in response to restraint were affected by their own and their partner's early life conditions, but did not change after breeding. However, across all pairs, partners became more similar in cort30 levels after breeding, although differences between partners in cort10 remained greater in pairs with a corticosterone-treated female. Thus, we show that HPA axis response to stressors in adulthood can be modulated by reproductive partners and that similarity between partners is reduced when females are postnatally exposed to elevated glucocorticoids.

Outdoor adventure challenges are commonly used to enhance self-efficacy, but the physiological mechanisms involved remain unexplored. Additionally, while studies have documented the influence of self-efficacy on stress management, general self-efficacy has yet to be fully understood in the context of cardiovascular stress reactivity (CVR). This study investigated the influence of self-efficacy beliefs on CVR during acute psychological stress tasks. Additionally, it explored whether CVR serves as a novel mechanism underlying the outcomes of outdoor adventure challenges. As part of a wider randomized controlled trial, participants (n = 55) were invited to complete a laboratory session to assess CVR to an active (paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT)) and a passive (cold pressor test (CPT)) stress task. Randomized participants (n = 33) to the experimental condition also engaged in a high ropes challenge course after the laboratory session. It was found that greater self-reported self-efficacy was associated with larger CVR during the CPT and positively associated with perceived engagement and performance during the PASAT. Secondly, participants reporting positive change in self-efficacy post-intervention were associated with greater CVR and greater CVR was associated with higher ratings of intervention engagement and perceived challenge. This study provides preliminary evidence suggesting that greater efficacy beliefs may heighten CVR to passive acute psychological stressors. Habitual stress reactivity may represent a novel mechanism involved in outdoor and adventure-based interventions. Future research should continue to explore the impact of psychological variables on stress physiology and examine CVR as a potential mechanism in adventure experiences.

Our study proposes to examine how stress and emotion recognition interact with a history of maltreatment to influence sensitive parenting behaviors. A sample of 58 mothers and their children aged between 2 and 5 years old were recruited. Parents' history of maltreatment was measured using the Child Trauma Questionnaire. An emotion recognition task was performed. Mothers identified the dominant emotion in morphed facial emotion expressions in children. Mothers and children interacted for 15 minutes. Salivary cortisol levels of mothers were collected before and after the interaction. Maternal sensitive behaviors were coded during the interaction using the Coding Interactive Behavior scheme. Results indicate that the severity of childhood maltreatment is related to less sensitive behaviors for mothers with average to good abilities in emotion recognition and lower to average increases in cortisol levels following an interaction with their children. For mothers with higher cortisol levels, there is no association between a history of maltreatment and sensitive behaviors, indicating that higher stress reactivity could act as a protective factor. Our study highlights the complex interaction between individual characteristics and environmental factors when it comes to parenting. These results argue for targeted interventions that address personal trauma.

Stress affects executive functions and exploring the association between stress-induced physiological reactivity and executive functions could highlight the potential mechanism of the stress-cognitive function link. Our study examined the linear and nonlinear associations between cardiovascular stress reactivity and cool and hot executive functions among adolescents. In November 2021 (T1), 273 Chinese adolescents between 11 and 14 (Mage = 12.93, SDage = 0.79) underwent a speech task during which their cardiovascular data were recorded, and they completed a Flanker task and an Emotional Stroop task. In May 2023 (T2), 253 adolescents again completed the Flanker and Emotional Stroop tasks. Cool and hot executive functions were assessed using the intra-individual reaction time variability of the Flanker task and Emotional Stroop task, respectively. Results showed that cardiovascular stress reactivity was positively linearly associated with cool executive functions at T1 and quadratically (inverted U-shaped) associated with cool executive functions at T1 and hot executive functions at T1 and T2. These findings suggest that compared to very high and very low cardiovascular reactivity, moderate to high cardiovascular reactivity to a structured social challenge is associated with better cool and hot executive functions.

Under stress, parents tend to use more controlling feeding behaviors toward their children (Berge et al., 2017; Doan et al., 2022; Loth et al., 2016). However, the majority of prior work focuses on subjective reports of stress, and there is a dearth of research examining parental physiological stress and its impact on feeding behaviors. In the current study, we examined how parental physiological stress reactivity would influence their feeding behaviors under mild stress in a lab-based setting. Parents (n = 83, 50 % females) and their children (59% female, Mage = 42 months, SD = 4.48) participated. Stress was induced using the Trier Social Stress Test in the laboratory (Kirshbaum et al., 1993). Salivary samples were collected at 4 time points during the visit to index stress reactivity and later assayed for cortisol and DHEA. Parent-child interactions during the anticipatory period of the stress test were observationally coded for parent use of controlling feeding behaviors. To examine whether parent stress physiology predicts their feeding behaviors, we ran a Poisson regression using income, parent ethnicity, parent sex (mom/dad), time of day, and DHEA/cortisol ratio as predictors of controlling feeding behavior. Latinx parents used less controlling feeding behaviors, b = -0.323, p = 0.041 than non-Latinx parents. Parents with a higher DHEA/Cortisol ratio were less likely to use controlling feeding behaviors, b = -0.231, p = 0.008. To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that for both mothers and fathers, DHEA relative to cortisol has a protective role in controlling feeding practices, and lends support to the role of acute stress reactivity in predicting behavioral outcomes.

Cardiovascular stress reactivity (CVR) is considered as a physiological pathway linking emotional reactivity and emotion regulation with psychopathology. However, the associations between CVR and emotional reactivity and emotion regulation remain underexplored, with limited evidence showing that either excessive or blunted CVR is associated with emotional reactivity and emotional regulation. Recently, moderate CVR has been theoretically hypothesized to be related to optimal outcomes; however, whether CVR is nonlinearly associated with emotional reactivity and emotion regulation still needs to be investigated. Parents of 341 junior school students reported their children's emotional reactivity and emotion regulation on the Emotion Questionnaire, and the students were invited to participate in a mental arithmetic task with continuous cardiovascular monitoring indexed by heart rate (HR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP). Results did not reveal any linear relationships between CVR and emotional reactivity or emotion regulation. However, quadratic associations between HR, SBP reactivity and emotional reactivity and emotion regulation were found even after controlling for sex, age and BMI. Specifically, there was a U-shaped association between HR, SBP reactivity, and emotional reactivity, while there was an inverted U-shaped association between HR, SBP reactivity, and emotion regulation. These findings suggest that moderate to high rather than exaggerated or blunted CVR reflects adaptive emotional reactivity and better emotion regulation among adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence from laboratory studies suggests that progesterone may be effective in reducing stress and craving, and may improve cognitive performance in smokers and individuals with cocaine dependence. The objective of this study was to examine if progesterone would attenuate stress-induced craving, anxiety, affect and physiological measures, as well as improve stress-induced cognitive performance (processing speed and selective attention) in individuals diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: This laboratory study included (n = 13) participants who were diagnosed with current AUD and PTSD who were randomly assigned to recive either progesterone (200mg bid) or placebo in identical looking capsules for 3 days. On the fourth day they completed a laboratory session. In the morning of the test session, they received the last dose of medication and completed the rest of the laboratory procedures. The procedures included presentation in random order of personalized trauma and neutral scripts with relaxation in between. Main outcomes included measure of craving, anxiety, affect and cognitive performance. RESULTS: Consistent with other research, trauma scripts produced significantly greater increases in craving, anxiety and negative affect when compared with neutral scripts. Progesterone significantly reduced stress-induced symptoms of craving, anxiety, fear, anger and sadness but had no effect on positive emotions (joy, relaxation). Progesterone was effective in ameliorating stress-induced decreases in cognitive performance. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study demonstrate that progesterone can be effective in reducing stress-induced craving, anxiety and negative affect in a laboratory setting in individuals with comorbid AUD and PTSD. Interestingly, progesterone also improved cognitive performance. These findings require replication in a larger clinical trial and may have implications for treatment among individuals with AUD and PTSD.This study was registered as NCT02187224, at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

INTRODUCTION: Research on leader-member exchange (LMX) has shown that the relation between leaders and followers may be considered from different angles. Leaders may form individual relationships with followers (LMX quality), may agree with their followers on these relationships (LMX agreement), and may form different relationships within their work group (LMX variability). We posit that leaders' mental health may function as an antecedent for these different forms of LMX. We use conservation-of-resources theory as a theoretical model to describe how leaders' mental health may interact with relationship quality with followers on different levels. METHODS: We operationalized leaders' mental health using depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress reactivity. Our sample consisted of 322 followers of 75 leaders. Followers rated the LMX quality with their respective leader. Leaders rated depressive symptoms, anxiety, levels of stress reactivity, and LMX quality with their followers. RESULTS: Results of multilevel modeling showed that stress reactivity was negatively related to LMX quality and anxiety was positively linked to LMX agreement. Depressive symptoms were not related to aspects of LMX. CONCLUSION: By using multisource data on different analysis levels, we are able to include different perspectives on antecedents of LMX relationship quality. Implications for LMX at different levels of analysis as well as future research are discussed.

We examined age differences in the within-person relationships among perceived stress (PS), perceived stress reactivity (PSR), and depressive affect (DA) as well as potential mechanisms of depression with a longitudinal moderated mediation model. Participants from the Notre Dame Study of Health & Wellbeing (N = 572) completed two to four waves of yearly assessments. Sequentially built multilevel models, in which year was nested within person, illustrated that only midlife adults experience an exacerbated effect of within-person fluctuations in PSR on the relationship between within-person PS and DA levels (γ41 = -.004, p < .01). Findings further suggest that PSR accounts for the PS-DA relationship. Furthermore, older adults illustrate successful emotion regulation strategies at the yearly level-resisting the negative ramifications of years of greater PS and PSR, whereas midlife adults who experience years of greater PSR would particularly benefit from stress management interventions and monitoring of DA levels.

Alterations in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its effector hormone cortisol have been proposed as one possible mechanism linking child maltreatment experiences to health disparities. In this series of meta-analyses, we aimed to quantify the existing evidence on the effect of child maltreatment on various measures of HPA axis activity. The systematic literature search yielded 1,858 records, of which 87 studies (k = 132) were included. Using random-effects models, we found evidence for blunted cortisol stress reactivity in individuals exposed to child maltreatment. In contrast, no overall differences were found in any of the other HPA axis activity measures (including measures of daily activity, cortisol assessed in the context of pharmacological challenges and cumulative measures of cortisol secretion). The impact of several moderators (e.g., sex, psychopathology, study quality), the role of methodological shortcomings of existing studies, as well as potential directions for future research are discussed.

Non-Hispanic Black (BL) individuals have the highest prevalence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with all other racial/ethnic groups. Previous work focused on racial disparities in sympathetic control and blood pressure (BP) regulation between young BL and White (WH) adults, have mainly included men. Herein, we hypothesized that BL women would exhibit augmented resting sympathetic vascular transduction and greater sympathetic and BP reactivity to cold pressor test (CPT) compared with WH women. Twenty-eight young healthy women (BL: n = 14, 22 [Formula: see text] 4 yr; WH: n = 14, 22 [Formula: see text] 4 yr) participated. Beat-to-beat BP (Finometer), common femoral artery blood flow (duplex Doppler ultrasound), and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA; microneurography) were continuously recorded. In a subset (BL n = 10, WH n = 11), MSNA and BP were recorded at rest and during a 2-min CPT. Resting sympathetic vascular transduction was quantified as changes in leg vascular conductance (LVC) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) following spontaneous bursts of MSNA using signal averaging. Sympathetic and BP reactivity were quantified as changes in MSNA and MAP during the last minute of CPT. There were no differences in nadir LVC following resting MSNA bursts between BL (-8.70 ± 3.43%) and WH women (-7.30 ± 3.74%; P = 0.394). Likewise, peak increases in MAP following MSNA bursts were not different between groups (BL: +2.80 ± 1.42 mmHg; vs. WH: +2.99 ± 1.15 mmHg; P = 0.683). During CPT, increases in MSNA and MAP were also not different between BL and WH women, with similar transduction estimates between groups (ΔMAP/ΔMSNA; P = 0.182). These findings indicate that young, healthy BL women do not exhibit exaggerated sympathetic transduction or augmented sympathetic and BP reactivity during CPT.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study was the first to comprehensively investigate sympathetic vascular transduction and sympathetic and BP reactivity during a cold pressor test in young, healthy BL women. We demonstrated that young BL women do not exhibit exaggerated resting sympathetic vascular transduction and do not have augmented sympathetic or BP reactivity during cold stress compared with their WH counterparts. Collectively, these findings suggest that alterations in sympathetic transduction and reactivity are not apparent in young, healthy BL women.

Sleep reactivity is a predisposition to sleep disturbance during environmental perturbations, pharmacological challenges, or stressful life events. Consequently, individuals with highly reactive sleep systems are prone to insomnia disorder after a stressor, engendering risk of psychopathology and potentially impeding recovery from traumatic stress. Thus, there is tremendous value in ameliorating sleep reactivity to foster a sleep system that is robust to stress exposure, ultimately preventing insomnia and its downstream consequences. We reviewed prospective evidence for sleep reactivity as a predisposition to insomnia since our last review on the topic in 2017. We also reviewed studies investigating pre-trauma sleep reactivity as a predictor of adverse post-traumatic sequelae, and clinical trials that reported the effect of behavioural treatments for insomnia on mitigating sleep reactivity. Most studies measured sleep reactivity via self-report using the Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test (FIRST), demonstrating high scores on this scale reliably indicate a sleep system with a lower capacity to tolerate stress. Nascent evidence suggests elevated sleep reactivity prior to trauma increases the risk of negative posttraumatic outcomes, namely acute stress disorder, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Lastly, sleep reactivity appears most responsive to behavioural insomnia interventions when delivered early during the acute phase of insomnia. Overall, the literature strongly supports sleep reactivity as a premorbid vulnerability to incident acute insomnia disorder when faced with an array of biopsychosocial stressors. The FIRST identifies individuals at risk of insomnia a priori, thereby guiding early interventions toward this vulnerable population to prevent insomnia and promote resilience to adversity.

BACKGROUND: How sleep is impacted by stress ("sleep reactivity to stress") and how stress is impacted by sleep ("stress reactivity to sleep") are trait-like characteristics of individuals that predict depression, anxiety, and insomnia. However, pathways between reactivity and functional impairment (e.g., impairment in social relationships and interpersonal functioning) have not been explored, which may be a critical pathway in understanding the link between reactivity and the development of psychological disorders. PURPOSE: We examined associations between reactivity and changes in functional impairment among a cohort of 9/11 World Trade Center responders. METHODS: Data from 452 responders (Mage = 55.22 years; 89.4% male) were collected between 2014 and 2016. Four baseline sleep and stress reactivity indices (i.e., sleep duration and efficiency reactivity to stress; stress reactivity to sleep duration and efficiency) were calculated from 14 days of sleep and stress data using random slopes from multilevel models. Functional impairment was assessed approximately 1 year and 2 years after baseline via semi-structured interviews. Latent change score analyses examined associations between baseline reactivity indices and changes in functional impairment. RESULTS: Greater baseline sleep efficiency reactivity to stress was associated with decreases in functioning (ß = -0.05, p = .039). In addition, greater stress reactivity to sleep duration (ß = -0.08, p = .017) and sleep efficiency (ß = -0.22, p < .001) was associated with lower functioning at timepoint one. CONCLUSION: People who are more reactive to daily fluctuations in stress and sleep have poorer interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Identifying individuals with high reactivity who could benefit from preventative treatment may foster better social integration.

It is possible that individuals with high sleep-stress reactivity are more likely to experience long-term functional impairment (e.g., impairment in social relationships and interpersonal functioning)­a predisposing factor for psychological disorders, yet this pathway has not been explored. Therefore, we examined associations between sleep-stress reactivity and changes in functional impairment across a 1-year period in a large sample of 9/11 World Trade Center responders. The study results suggest that 9/11 World Trade Center responders who are more reactive to daily fluctuations in stress and sleep have poorer interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Identifying individuals with high sleep-stress reactivity who could benefit from preventative treatment may foster better social integration.

BACKGROUND: Uninterrupted prolonged sitting and exaggerated psychobiological reactivity to acute psychological stress are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Breaking up prolonged sitting with frequent, short bouts of light-intensity physical activity acutely lowers CVD risk markers under resting conditions. PURPOSE: To examine whether frequent interruptions to prolonged sitting with body-weighted resistance activity can acutely lower systolic blood pressure (SBP; primary outcome) and other cardiovascular (CV), inflammatory, and cortisol (secondary outcomes) responses to acute psychological stress. METHODS: This randomized crossover trial included 17 sedentary participants (9 men; mean ± SD age; 24.0 ± 0.5 years) who completed two conditions: (i) interrupting 4 hr of sitting with 4 min of light body-weighted resistance activity every 30-min (BREAK), and (ii) 4 hr of uninterrupted sitting (SIT). Following the BREAK and SIT intervention windows, CV, inflammatory, and cortisol markers were measured at rest, during stress tasks (8-min Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test [PASAT] and 3-min cold pressor [CP]), and 45-min recovery periods. RESULTS: There were main effects of time for CV parameters (SBP, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistance [all p < .001]), inflammatory markers (interleukin-6 [IL-6]), and cortisol (p < .05) in response to stress. Time-by-condition interaction effects revealed that in the BREAK-condition there was lower SBP during immediate recovery from the CP (mean {95% confidence interval [CI]}: 127.2 [121.3, 133.4] vs 133.4 [125.5, 141.7] mmHg; p = .020), higher concentrations of plasma IL-6 45-min post-PASAT (2.70 [1.97, 3.70] vs 1.71 [1.32, 2.22] pg/mL; p = .010), and larger (nonsignificant) salivary cortisol concentrations 8-min post-CP (6.29 [4.60, 8.58] vs 3.97 [3.16, 4.99] nmol/L; p = .079). CONCLUSIONS: Interrupting prolonged sitting with frequent bouts of light intensity body-weighted resistance activity alters psychobiological responses to acute psychological stress. Further research should explore the longer-term implications for CVD risk.


Sitting for long periods without interruption and the way in which we physically respond to short-term psychological stress are linked to heart disease risk. Breaking up sitting with short, frequent bouts of light activity can lower heart disease risk but how this may improve how we respond to stress is unknown. Our study investigated if interruptions to prolonged sitting with body-weighted resistance activity lowered changes seen under stress such as changes in blood pressure (BP) and inflammation. Seventeen participants undertook two testing sessions. One session interrupted 4 hr of sitting with 4-min of light activity every 30-min, and the other session was 4 hr of uninterrupted sitting. After each session, participants did two stress tasks: one math-based task and one where feet were submerged in cold water. The changes in BP and inflammation to stress were measured. We found when breaking-up sitting time with activity, BP was lower after the cold-water task compared to when people did not break up their sitting. In summary, breaking up sitting with frequent bouts of light activity may influence how we respond to short-term stress, but future research needs to explore what these short-term changes mean for the longer-term risks of heart disease.

Individuals exhibiting exaggerated blood pressure responses to stress are at increased risk for later cardiovascular disease. Engagement in brief bouts of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity may reduce instances of these exaggerated blood pressure responses. While observational work has shown that periods of light physical activity may also be associated with reduced blood pressure responses to stress in daily life, the few experimental studies involving light physical activity have methodological limitations that temper conclusions. The current investigation sought to understand the effects of brief bouts of light physical activity on blood pressure responses to psychological stress. In a between-person, single-session experimental design, 179 healthy, young adults were randomized to 15 min of light physical activity, moderate physical activity, or sitting before engaging in a 10-min computerized Stroop Color-Word Interference Task. Blood pressure readings were collected throughout the study session. Surprisingly, the light physical activity participants showed higher systolic blood pressure responses to stress than control participants by 2.9 mmHg (F (2, 174) = 3.49, ηp 2  = 0.038, p = .03), whereas no significant differences were shown between moderate physical activity and control groups (F (2, 174) = 2.59, ηp 2  = 0.028, p = .078). These findings show that light physical activity may not be related to reduced blood pressure responses to stress in an experimental session involving healthy, college-aged adults and question the extent to which brief bouts of physical activity may reduce acute blood pressure responses to stress.

Early-life stress (ELS) is associated with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation and can increase the risk of psychiatric disorders later in life. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of ELS on baseline HPA axis functioning and on the response to additional stress in adolescent male mice of strains C57BL/6J and BTBR. As a model of ELS, prolonged separation of pups from their mothers (for 3 h once a day: maternal separation [MS]) was implemented. To evaluate HPA axis activity, we assessed serum corticosterone levels and mRNA expression of corticotropin-releasing hormone (Crh) in the hypothalamus, of steroidogenesis genes in adrenal glands, and of an immediate early gene (c-Fos) in both tissues at baseline and immediately after 1 h of restraint stress. HPA axis activity at baseline did not depend on the history of ELS in mice of both strains. After the exposure to the acute restraint stress, C57BL/6J-MS mice showed less pronounced upregulation of Crh and of corticosterone concentration as compared to the control, indicating a decrease in stress reactivity. By contrast, BTBR-MS mice showed stronger upregulation of c-Fos in the hypothalamus and adrenal glands as compared to controls, thus pointing to greater activation of these organs in response to the acute restraint stress. In addition, we noted that BTBR mice are more stress reactive (than C57BL/6J mice) because they exhibited greater upregulation of corticosterone, c-Fos, and Cyp11a1 in response to the acute restraint stress. Taken together, these results indicate strain-specific and situation-dependent effects of ELS on HPA axis functioning and on c-Fos expression.
