Quantifying biodiversity trends in economically developed countries, where depopulation, associated secondary succession, and climate warming are ongoing, provides insights for global biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. However, few studies have assessed the impacts of secondary succession and climate warming on species' population trends at a national scale. We estimated the population trends of common breeding bird species in Japan and examined the associations between the overall population trend and species traits with the nationwide bird count data on 47 species collected from 2009 to 2020. The overall population trend varied among species. Four species populations increased moderately, 18 were stable, and 11 declined moderately. Population trends for 13 species were uncertain. The difference in overall trends among the species was associated with their habitat group and temperature niche. Species with relatively low-temperature niches experienced more pronounced declines. Multispecies indicators showed a moderate increase in forest specialists and moderate declines in forest generalists (species that use both forests and open habitats) and open-habitat specialists. Forest generalists and open-habitat specialists also declined more rapidly at sites with more abandoned farmland. All species groups showed an accelerated decline or decelerated increase after 2015. These results suggest that common breeding birds in Japan are facing deteriorating trends as a result of nationwide changes in land use and climate. Future land-use planning and policies should consider the benefits of passive rewilding for forest specialists and active restoration measures (e.g., low-intensive forestry and agriculture) for nonforest specialists to effectively conserve biodiversity in the era of human depopulation and climate warming.


Efectos de la despoblación humana y el calentamiento climático sobre las poblaciones de aves en Japón Resumen La cuantificación de las tendencias poblacionales en los países económicamente desarrollados, en donde la despoblación (asociada a la sucesión secundaria) y el cambio climático son continuos, proporciona información para la conservación mundial de la biodiversidad en el siglo XXI. Sin embargo, pocos estudios han evaluado el impacto de la sucesión secundaria y el calentamiento climático sobre las tendencias poblacionales a escala nacional. Usamos un conteo nacional de aves de 47 especies recolectado entre 2009 y 2020 para estimar las tendencias poblacionales de especies de aves en Japón y examinamos las asociaciones entre la tendencia poblacional general y las características de la especie. La tendencia poblacional general varió entre especies. Las poblaciones de cuatro especies incrementaron con moderación, 18 permanecieron estables y once declinaron con moderación. Las tendencias poblacionales para 13 especies no fueron claras. La diferencia entre las tendencias generales de las especies estuvo asociada con su grupo de hábitat y el nicho térmico. Conservation of biodiversity relies heavily on protected areas but their role and effectiveness under a warming climate is still debated. We estimated the climate-driven changes in the temperature niche compositions of bird communities inside and outside protected areas in southern Canada. We hypothesized that communities inside protected areas include a higher proportion of cold-dwelling species than communities outside protected areas. We also hypothesized that communities shift to warm-dwelling species more slowly inside protected areas than outside. To study community changes, we used large-scale and long-term (1997-2019) data from the Breeding Bird Survey of Canada. To describe the temperature niche compositions of bird communities, we calculated the community temperature index (CTI) annually for each community inside and outside protected areas. Generally, warm-dwelling species dominated communities with high CTI values. We modeled temporal changes in CTI as a function of protection status with linear mixed-effect models. We also determined which species contributed most to the temporal changes in CTI with a jackknife approach. As anticipated, CTI was lower inside protected areas than outside. However, contrary to our expectation, CTI increased faster over time inside than outside protected areas and warm-dwelling species contributed most to CTI change inside protected areas. These results highlight the ubiquitous impacts of climate warming. Currently, protected areas can aid cold-dwelling species by providing habitat, but as the climate warms, the communities' temperature compositions inside protected areas quickly begin to resemble those outside protected areas, suggesting that protected areas delay the impacts of climate warming on cold-dwelling species.


Cambios en la composición del nicho térmico dentro y fuera de las áreas protegidas bajo el calentamiento climático Resumen La conservación de la biodiversidad depende mucho de las áreas protegidas, aunque todavía se debate su papel y efectividad bajo el calentamiento climático. Estimamos los cambios causados por el clima en la composición de los nichos térmicos de las comunidades de aves dentro y fuera de las áreas protegidas al sur de Canadá. Supusimos que las comunidades dentro de las áreas protegidas incluyen una proporción mayor de especies de zonas frías que las comunidades fuera de las áreas protegidas. Suicide is a growing public health issue among adolescents. While the majority of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth are healthy, many experience suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB). Due to discrimination and stigma, TGD youth attempt suicide at higher rates then heterosexual, cisgender and even cisgender, LGBQ youth. Despite this vulnerability to suicide, few treatments have been developed and tested for this population. One treatment, attachment-based family therapy (ABFT) has been adapted to work with LGBQ youth and may be promising for TGD adolescents at risk for suicide. This article provides an overview of our ABFT modifications for TGD youth with thoughts of suicide. Specifically, we illustrate how treatment outcomes, in a single case study, relate to processes within clinical treatment tasks. The case study demonstrates the application of these ABFT modifications with a self-identified, gender nonconforming adolescent (who had recently attempted suicide) and his caregivers. Treatment evaluation measures were collected over the course of 24 weeks to illustrate the youth's clinical progress. The youth's suicidal symptoms diminished markedly by the end of treatment. Further, the family reported an increased ability for problem solving and more open communication by treatment conclusion.


El suicidio es un problema de salud pública cada vez mayor entre los adolescentes. Si bien la mayoría de los jóvenes transgénero y de géneros diversos (TGD) son saludables, muchos tienen pensamientos y conductas suicidas. Debido a la discriminación y al estigma, los índices de intento de suicidio en los jóvenes TGD son más altos que en los jóvenes heterosexuales, cisgénero e incluso LGBQ cisgénero. A pesar de esta vulnerabilidad al suicidio, se han desarrollado y se han evaluado pocos tratamientos para esta población. Un tratamiento, la terapia familiar basada en el apego (TFBA), se ha adaptado para trabajar con jóvenes LGBQ y puede ser prometedor para adolescentes TGD en riesgo de suicidio. Este artículo ofrece un resumen de nuestras modificaciones a la TFBA para los jóvenes TGD con pensamientos de suicidio. Específicamente, ilustramos cómo los resultados del tratamiento, en un solo caso práctico, se relacionan con los procesos dentro de las tareas del tratamiento clínico. Se recopilaron las valoraciones de una evaluación del tratamiento durante el transcurso de 24 semanas para ilustrar el avance clínico del joven. Los síntomas de suicidio del joven disminuyeron notablemente al final del tratamiento. Además, la familia informó una mayor capacidad para resolver problemas y una comunicación más abierta al concluir el tratamiento.

Suicide is a critical issue among Latina youth. In this study, we use family case analysis to explore how gendered oppression, silencing, and violence shape suicidal behaviors among a sample of Latina daughters (n = 10), and their parents. For comparison, we include family narratives from Latina adolescents with no histories of suicide attempts (n = 10). Results suggest how secrets and silence, as indicative of gendered oppression, may catalyze a suicide attempt. The risks are particularly salient when daughter and mother both have experienced violence that conflicts with gendered cultural scripts. Findings highlight the importance of parental engagement and exploration of histories of violence in the treatment of Latina suicide attempters. Future research should incorporate the risk factors of gendered oppression and violence to better understand the development of suicidality among Latina women.


El suicidio es un problema crítico entre las jóvenes latinas. En este artículo, usamos un análisis de casos familiares para averiguar cómo la opresión de género, el silenciamiento y la violencia determinan conductas suicidas entre una muestra de hijas latinas (n = 10) y sus padres. Para comparar, incluimos relatos familiares de adolescentes latinas sin historias de intentos de suicidio (n = 10). Los resultados sugieren cómo los secretos y el silencio, como indicadores de la opresión de género, pueden catalizar un intento de suicidio. Los riesgos son particularmente prominentes cuando la madre y la hija han sufrido una violencia que contradice los guiones culturales de género. Los resultados destacan la importancia de la participación de los padres y del análisis de las historias de violencia en el tratamiento de mujeres latinas que han intentado suicidarse. Within relatively small areas, there exist high spatial variations of mortality between villages. In rural Burkina Faso, with data from 1993 to 1998, clusters of particularly high child mortality were identified in the population of the Nouna Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), a member of the INDEPTH Network. In this paper, we report child mortality with respect to temporal trends, spatial clustering and disparity in this HDSS from 1993 to 2012. Poisson regression was used to describe village-specific child mortality rates and time trends in mortality. The spatial scan statistic was used to identify villages or village clusters with higher child mortality. Clustering of mortality in the area is still present, but not as strong as before. The disparity of child mortality between villages has decreased. The decrease occurred in the context of an overall halving of child mortality in the rural area of Nouna HDSS between 1993 and 2012. Extrapolated to the Millennium Development Goals target period 1990-2015, this yields an estimated reduction of 54%, which is not too far off the aim of a two-thirds reduction.

Accurate trend estimates are necessary for understanding which species are declining and which are most in need of conservation action. Imperfect species detection may result in unreliable trend estimates because this may lead to the overestimation of declines. Because many management decisions are based on population trend estimates, such biases could have severe consequences for conservation policy. We used an occupancy-modeling framework to estimate detectability and calculate nationwide population trends for 14 Swiss amphibian species both accounting for and ignoring imperfect detection. Through the application of International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List criteria to the different trend estimates, we assessed whether ignoring imperfect detection could affect conservation policy. Imperfect detection occurred for all species and detection varied substantially among species, which led to the overestimation of population declines when detectability was ignored. Consequently, accounting for imperfect detection lowered the red-list risk category for 5 of the 14 species assessed. We demonstrate that failing to consider species detectability can have serious consequences for species management and that occupancy modeling provides a flexible framework to account for observation bias and improve assessments of conservation status. A problem inherent to most historical records is that they contain presence-only data from which only relative declines can be estimated. A move toward the routine recording of nonobservation and absence data is essential if conservation practitioners are to move beyond this toward accurate population trend estimation.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) infection is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STD). However, the prevalence among young people is unknown in our country. In 2007, the monitoring of the prevalence and behaviours related to acquiring it began in Catalonia in young people ≤25years. OBJECTIVES: To determine and monitor the prevalence and determining factors of chlamydia among a young sexually active population ≤25years, treated in sexual and reproductive health care centras (CT/NG-ASSIR) and in prisons (CT/NG-Prisons). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An analysis was performed on 6 cross-sectional data studies in two sentinel populations of young people from the period 2007-2014. Behavioural indicators were recorded and urine specimens were collected for analysis by PCR. The prevalence and trends are described, and the variables associated with infection were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean prevalence for CT/NG-ASSIR was 7.4%, with an upward trend (P=.174), and an increase of 46.5%. CT/NG-Prisons had a mean 8.0%, with an upward trend (P=.282), and an increase of 31.6%. Age and foreign origin are presented as risk factors in both populations. The concurrent sexual partners added to CT/NG-ASSIR and the time spent in prison to CT/NG-Prisons. DISCUSSION: The results underscore the need for a more efficient approach to control activities related to chlamydia infection in Catalonia. Policies need to be strengthened to promote safer sexual behaviours and active case finding by opportunistic screening in less than 25year-old.

INTRODUCTION: In recent decades, mortality rates for cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) have declined significantly in many countries. This study analyses changes in CVD mortality rates in Spain (1980-2011) to determine if previously observed trends remain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data on CVD mortality rates and the population data needed for the analysis were provided by Spain's National Statistics Institute. We calculated age-specific mortality rate, age-standardised overall mortality, and age-truncated mortality (35-64 years) using the direct method and standard European population structure. Joinpoint analysis was used to estimate the percentage of annual change in rates and identify significant changes in trends. RESULTS: CVD mortality rate decreased considerably and continuously over the last 32 years in all age groups and in both sexes in Spain. For both sexes, joinpoint analysis identifies a final period with more marked decline: 2005-2011 in women (-6.3%) and 2007-2011 in men (-7.2%). CONCLUSIONS: CVD mortality rates displayed a marked and continuous decline in Spain between 1980 and 2011. Due to the ageing of the population, doctors expect an increase in CVD prevalence and therefore its magnitude in terms of disability and healthcare costs, which poses a challenge to our health system.

The recognition that growing proportions of species worldwide are endangered has led to the development of comparative analyses to elucidate why some species are more prone to extinction than others. Understanding factors and patterns of species vulnerability might provide an opportunity to develop proactive conservation strategies. Such comparative analyses are of special concern at national scales because this is the scale at which most conservation initiatives take place. We applied powerful ensemble learning models to test for biological correlates of the risk of decline among the Bolivian mammals to understand species vulnerability at a national scale and to predict the population trend for poorly known species. Risk of decline was nonrandomly distributed: higher proportions of large-sized taxa were under decline, whereas small-sized taxa were less vulnerable. Body mass, mode of life (i.e., aquatic, terrestrial, volant), geographic range size, litter size, home range, niche specialization, and reproductive potential were strongly associated with species vulnerability. Moreover, we found interacting and nonlinear effects of key traits on the risk of decline of mammals at a national scale. Our model predicted 35 data-deficient species in decline on the basis of their biological vulnerability, which should receive more attention in order to prevent their decline. Our results highlight the relevance of comparative analysis at relatively narrow geographical scales, reveal previously unknown factors related to species vulnerability, and offer species-by-species outcomes that can be used to identify targets for conservation, especially for insufficiently known species.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that socioeconomic shocks strongly affect wildlife populations, but quantitative evidence is sparse. The collapse of socialism in Russia in 1991 caused a major socioeconomic shock, including a sharp increase in poverty. We analyzed population trends of 8 large mammals in Russia from 1981 to 2010 (i.e., before and after the collapse). We hypothesized that the collapse would first cause population declines, primarily due to overexploitation, and then population increases due to adaptation of wildlife to new environments following the collapse. The long-term Database of the Russian Federal Agency of Game Mammal Monitoring, consisting of up to 50,000 transects that are monitored annually, provided an exceptional data set for investigating these population trends. Three species showed strong declines in population growth rates in the decade following the collapse, while grey wolf (Canis lupus) increased by more than 150%. After 2000 some trends reversed. For example, roe deer (Capreolus spp.) abundance in 2010 was the highest of any period in our study. Likely reasons for the population declines in the 1990s include poaching and the erosion of wildlife protection enforcement. The rapid increase of the grey wolf populations is likely due to the cessation of governmental population control. In general, the widespread declines in wildlife populations after the collapse of the Soviet Union highlight the magnitude of the effects that socioeconomic shocks can have on wildlife populations and the possible need for special conservation efforts during such times.

Persecution and overexploitation by humans are major causes of species extinctions. Rare species, often confined to small geographic ranges, are usually at highest risk, whereas extinctions of superabundant species with very large ranges are rare. The Yellow-breasted Bunting (Emberiza aureola) used to be one of the most abundant songbirds of the Palearctic, with a very large breeding range stretching from Scandinavia to the Russian Far East. Anecdotal information about rapid population declines across the range caused concern about unsustainable trapping along the species' migration routes. We conducted a literature review and used long-term monitoring data from across the species' range to model population trend and geographical patterns of extinction. The population declined by 84.3-94.7% between 1980 and 2013, and the species' range contracted by 5000 km. Quantitative evidence from police raids suggested rampant illegal trapping of the species along its East Asian flyway in China. A population model simulating an initial harvest level of 2% of the population, and an annual increase of 0.2% during the monitoring period produced a population trajectory that matched the observed decline. We suggest that trapping strongly contributed to the decline because the consumption of Yellow-breasted Bunting and other songbirds has increased as a result of economic growth and prosperity in East Asia. The magnitude and speed of the decline is unprecedented among birds with a comparable range size, with the exception of the Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), which went extinct in 1914 due to industrial-scale hunting. Our results demonstrate the urgent need for an improved monitoring of common and widespread species' populations, and consumption levels throughout East Asia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the overall and annual age-standardized incidence of pregnancy-related pulmonary embolism (PE) in Spain from 2016 to 2021, explore the distribution of PE events during pregnancy and the postpartum period, identify potential risk factors, and estimate mortality rates during hospital admission. METHODS: In a retrospective, observational, population-based study, data from the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database were analyzed to identify women with hospital episodes of pregnancy-related-PE. The primary outcome was the overall and annual age-standardized incidence of pregnancy-related-PE, with secondary aims including the distribution of events during pregnancy and postpartum and the calculation of age-standardized mortality rates during admission. RESULTS: Among 2,178,805 births from 2016 to 2021, 522 women were diagnosed with pregnancy-related PE, yielding an overall age-standardized incidence of 2.83 cases per 10,000 births. A non-significant increasing trend was observed from 2.43 to 4.18 cases per 10,000 births (p = 0.06). Comorbidities were low, with a notable association between PE and SARS-CoV-2 infection during the last two years. The mortality rate among women with pregnancy-related PE was 2.8%, with a higher incidence of PE reported during the postpartum period. CONCLUSION: The incidence of pregnancy-related-PE in Spain exhibits a non-significant increasing trend, with a significant risk of mortality. The association with SARS-CoV-2 infection underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring and management of pregnant women, particularly during pandemics. This study contributes specific data on the incidence and characteristics of pregnancy-related-PE in Spain, emphasizing the need to consider PE in the differential diagnosis and management strategies for pregnant and postpartum women.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the population incidence of hip arthroscopy from 1998 to 2018 and to project the trends for the year 2030, as well as to describe the variations in the population incidence between the autonomous communities. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective review of the minimum basic data set from 1998 to 2018 was carried out. Temporal evolution was analyzed and the variables associated with the indication (age, sex, regions) were identified. For each region, the crude rate per 100,000 inhabitants was calculated. The 2019-2030 projection was made using linear regression. RESULTS: In Spain between 1998 and 2018 a total of 10,663 arthroscopic hip surgeries were carried out. The population incidence in 1998 was 0.14 CAC per 100,000 inhabitants, while in 2018 it was 4.09. For the year 2030 an increase of 156.9% in the number of arthroscopic hip surgeries is expected (P<.001). On average, 57.7% of all procedures (95% CI 55.2-60.2) were done in men and the highest incidence was found in ages ≤44 years. The geographical variation was 81%, being up to 15.4 times the difference in incidence per 100,000 inhabitants between some regions. CONCLUSIONS: The number of hip arthroscopies in Spain has been increasing in the 1998-2018 period and this growing trend is expected to continue until 2030. In Spain, hip arthroscopic procedures are performed more frequently in male patients and in under 45 years old. The variability of the population incidence between the autonomous communities is high.

OBJECTIVE: We propose to update bladder cancer mortality rates in Spain from 1980 to 2021, by sex and age-group, by autonomous community (AC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The public online databases of the National Statistical Institute were used to obtain data on population and bladder cancer mortality. Age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs), all ages and truncated (<75 and ≥75) were estimated and reported as rates per 100,000 persons. Joinpoint regression software was used for estimation and trend analysis of ASMRs bladder cancer. RESULTS: In the last decade, the ASMR for bladder cancer (all ages, <75 years and ≥75 years) decreased significantly in Spain for both sexes. This trend was observed in 12 ACs for men and in 4 ACs (Andalusia, Canary Islands, Catalonia and Madrid) for women, although to different degrees. For men, ASMR remained stable in Castilla-León and La Rioja (<75 years), Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia (≥75 years) and the 2 Castilian regions (all ages). For women, ASMR also decreased in Valencia (<75 and ≥75), Castilla-León (≥75), Galicia (≥75 and all ages) and Navarre (<75 and all ages). CONCLUSION: Our results reveal significant variations in trends by AC, sex and age group, emphasizing the need for continued follow-up and targeted interventions to further reduce bladder cancer mortality rates in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The growing trend of STIs in recent years was altered after the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. OBJECTIVES: Describe the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on STI declarations received during the pre-pandemic to pandemic period and estimate the number of STI cases expected for the pandemic period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive analysis of STI declarations received during the pre-pandemic (2018-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods. The influence of the number of positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 with the number of positive cases of STIs during the months of the pandemic was studied using a correlation model. Using the Holt-Wilson time series model, an estimate was made of the number of STI cases expected for the pandemic period. RESULTS: The global incidence rate for all STIs in 2020 decreased by 18.3% compared to 2019. Chlamydia and syphilis presented a greater reduction in their incidence from 2019 to 2020 of 22.7% and 20.9%, respectively and 9.5% and 2.5% for gonorrhea and LGV. Estimates showed that in 2020 there would have been 44.6% more STIs than those declared. The proportions according to sex, country of birth and sexual orientation changed significantly in chlamydia and gonorrhea. CONCLUSIONS: The measures adopted for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infections were able to achieve an initial decrease in STI cases in 2020, however, this change was not maintained during 2021, which ended with higher incidences recorded to date.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, 282,421 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Spain, and urological neoplasms (UN) were among the most frequent ones. Cancer treatment in eldery people is challenging due to fragility and comorbidities of these patients. To meet the needs of treating UN in the eldery, it is necessary to optimize healthcare resources, for which a deep analysis of cancer registries becomes mandatory. The objective of this work was to provide a detailed analysis of the incidence and mortality of UN in Spanish people over 65 years old in the last year 2020, as well as the estimates for the year 2040. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Incidence and mortality estimates were obtained from the GLOBOCAN database. The urological neoplasms that were included were: testicle, bladder, penis, kidney and prostate. RESULTS: In 2020, 63,278 cases of UN were diagnosed in Spain. Most UN were much more frequent among patients >65 years old, except for testicular cancers. For the year 2040, an incidence increase of 41.5% is estimated, reaching 89,507 new cases of UN per year, with approximately 3 out of 4 patients being over 65 years old. Deaths in people over 65 will increase by 60.15% in 2040. CONCLUSION: In the next two decades, it is expected that new cases UN in people over 65 years will increase above 50%. For Healthcare systems to face it, greater financial and human resources, as well as multidisciplinary teams with experience and geriatric training will be necessary.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: To update the information on mortality from cardiovascular diseases and assess recent trends in Spain. METHODS: Deaths from cardiovascular diseases (codes I20-I25, I50, I05-I09, I00-I02, I26-I49, I51, I52, I60-I69, I10-I15, and I70-I79 of the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Causes of Death) were obtained from the National Statistics Institute. Trends were analyzed using Joinpoint regression models. The results revealed the years (periods) composing each trend, as well as the annual percent change for each of them. The direction and magnitude of recent trends (last available 5-year period) were assessed by using the average annual percent change. RESULTS: The decline in mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases slowed from -3.7% and -4.0% in 1999-2013 to -1.7% and -2.2% since 2013 in men and women, respectively. During the study period (1999-2018) all the analyzed causes decreased significantly. Nevertheless, recent trends differed according to age, sex, and the cause analyzed. Truncated rates (35-64 years) slowed (cardiovascular disease and stroke in men and ischemic heart disease in both sexes), stabilized (cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other heart diseases in women, and blood vessel disease in men), or increased (other diseases of the heart in men and diseases of the blood vessels in women). CONCLUSIONS: In Spain, as in other countries, the reduction in mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases slowed (overall rates for both sexes and truncated in men) or stabilized (truncated rates in women) from 2014 to 2018.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Current psoriasis guidelines do not usually include recommendations about first line classical or biologic treatment. The objectives of this study were: to describe shifts in the prescription of the first biological treatment, and to compare treatment withdrawal and rates of adverse events over ten years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Biobadaderm registry was analyzed to describe: first biological prescription in bio-naïve patients, adverse events rate and reasons for drug withdrawal comparing three periods of time (2008-2010, 2011-2014, 2015-2018). RESULTS: Anti-TNF drugs were the most prescribed biological drug from 2008 to 2010. Ustekinumab has become the most prescribed first biologic since 2014. The main reasons for drug discontinuation were adverse events, lack of efficacy and remission. In each period any treatment was less likely to be discontinued due to any of these three reasons comparing to the previous period. CONCLUSIONS: The present study identifies trends in prescription of the first biological antipsoriatic drug in clinical practice from 2008 to 2018. It suggests that we have become more comfortable with the safety profile and more exigent with the efficacy of the drugs.

PURPOSE: To determine the national and subnational prevalence of amblyopia and the respective provincial distribution and trend during 1990-2018 in Iran. METHODS: Amblyopia data retrieved from 26 original studies, systematic reviews, Data has been cleaned by STATA and a linear mixed effect spatio-temporal model was used to calculate Gaussian process regression mean functions. Using a Bayesian approach, by pooling empirical data based on the assumed prior, a posterior distribution obtained for age and sex specific prevalence prediction nationally during the study time and provincially. RESULTS: The overall age-adjusted prevalence of Amblyopia was 0.03 (95% CI, 0.022-0.035). The prevalence was comparable in boys and girls (p = 0.85), highest prevalence was in >30 years old (p = 0.038). Our extrapolation revealed a stable trend of prevalence of Amblyopia in Iran during 1990-2018 (national screening program has been active from 1990 onwards). While Amblyopia prevalence suggested a declining trend in three provinces of Hormozgan, Qom and Tehran and it went up in 13 other provinces. CONCLUSION: Amblyopia prevalence seems unchanged despite the concurrent screening program. It is noteworthy that the coverage of the program has been improved and has reached more than 85% in 2018. Our finding mandates a formal evaluation on the program.
