RESUMO

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the association between factors affecting decreased physical activity (PA) during the COVID-19 pandemic by matching groups based on age, gender, and BMI variables using public Community Health Survey (CHS) data. Methods: Data from the CHS was selected and used to investigate health-related factors related to PA, including demographic, psychological, behavioral characteristics, sociocultural, and chronic disease. Exact group matching was conducted based on age, gender, and BMI variables. Frequency analysis, Chi-square test (χ2 test), and multinominal logistic regression analysis were performed to analyze the data, and odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were presented. The study also examined the impact of COVID-19 on PA, the fear of PA infection. Results: The logistic regression analysis by gender showed that PA decreased in all age groups, males, and females during the COVID-19 pandemic. The decrease in PA was lower in age groups other than those aged 60 or older. Stress experience, residence area, housing type, drinking, smoking, education level, and fear of infection were found to affect decreased PA due to COVID-19. Specifically, experiencing stress (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.178; 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.054 ~ 1.317) and increased smoking (OR = 1.332; 95% CI = 1.073 ~ 1.653) had a slightly higher impact on decreased PA. Conversely, living in a suburban area (OR = 0.653; CI = 0.585 ~ 0.728), having public housing (OR = 0.836; CI = 0.754 ~ 0.928), having less than a high school education (OR = 0.813; CI = 0.729 ~ 0.907), staying the same with alcohol (OR = 0.567; CI = 0.507 ~ 0.633) and smoking (OR = 0.836; CI = 0.728 ~ 0.959), and having low fear of infection (OR = 0.817; CI = 0.737 ~ 0.905) had a slightly lower impact on decreased PA. Conclusion: PA should be maintained or increased, particularly in the context of social distancing measures during the pandemic. To ensure that PA can be sustained, a program should be developed that considers the individual's geographical location, economic status, lifestyle, and environment.

Aerobic exercise prescription is often set at specific heart rate (HR) values. Previous studies demonstrated that during exercise carried out at a HR slightly above that corresponding to the gas exchange threshold (GET), work rate (WR) has to decrease in order to maintain HR constant. We hypothesized a greater WR decrease at a fixed HR after simulated microgravity/inactivity (bed rest, BR). Ten male volunteers (23 ± 5 yr) were tested before (PRE) and after (POST) a 10-day horizontal BR and performed on a cycle ergometer 1) incremental exercise; b) 15-min HRCLAMPED exercise, in which WR was continuously adjusted to maintain a constant HR, corresponding to that at 120% of GET determined in PRE; 3) two moderate-intensity constant WR (MOD) exercises. Breath-by-breath O2 uptake (V̇o2), HR, and other variables were determined. After BR, peak V̇o2 (V̇o2peak) and GET significantly decreased, by ∼10%. During HRCLAMPED (145 ± 11 beats·min-1), the decrease in WR needed to maintain a constant HR was greater in POST versus PRE (-39 ± 10% vs. -29 ± 14%, P < 0.01). In six subjects the decreased WR switched from the heavy- to the moderate-intensity domain. The decrease in WR during HRCLAMPED, in PRE versus POST, was significantly correlated with the V̇o2peak decrease (R2 = 0.52; P = 0.02). A greater amplitude of the slow component of the HR kinetics was observed during MOD following BR. Exercise at a fixed HR is not associated with a specific WR or WR domain; the problem, affecting exercise evaluation and prescription, is greater after BR. The WR decrease during HRCLAMPED is a biomarker of exercise intolerance after BR.NEW & NOTEWORTHY During a 15-min exercise carried out at a heart rate (HR) slightly above that corresponding to the gas exchange threshold, to keep HR constant work rate significantly decreased; the decrease was more pronounced after a 10-day horizontal bed rest. The work rate decrease at a fixed HR can be considered a systemic biomarker of exercise intolerance during microgravity/inactivity and could also be easily and reliably determined during spaceflights or in patients.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the possible associations between childhood noninfectious uveitis and cardio-respiratory fitness, physical activity, health related quality of life and fatigue. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 23 patients with noninfectious uveitis, aged 8-18 years. BMI, exercise capacity, muscle strength and physical activity were measured. Health-related quality of life and fatigue were assessed. The results were compared to standardized values for age matched healthy children. RESULTS: Twenty-three patients were included. Children with uveitis had a higher bodyweight and body mass index. Children with uveitis had lower cardio-respiratory fitness and they were less physically active, but they experienced a normal quality of life and normal fatigue. Parents of children with uveitis reported a lower quality of life and more fatigue for their children than parents of healthy children. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that children with noninfectious uveitis are at risk of developing lower physical and psychosocial health.

Diabetic older adults are at a higher risk of muscle strength (MS) decline than their non-diabetic counterparts. Adequate protein and energy intakes and physical activity (PA) may preserve MS during aging. However, the role of diet quality (DQ) in MS maintenance is still unknown. This study aimed to determine the association between DQ - alone or combined with PA - and changes in MS over 3 years in diabetic participants aged 67 to 84 years at recruitment in a secondary analysis of the longitudinal observational NuAge study. Changes in handgrip, knee extensor and elbow flexor strengths were calculated as the difference between recruitment (T1) and after 3 years (T4) in 156 diabetic older adults. Baseline DQ was calculated from 3 non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls collected at T1 using the validated Canadian Healthy Eating Index (C-HEI). Change in PA was calculated from Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) as PASE T4-PASE T1. Four combinations of variables were created: C-HEI<70 with PASE change either < or > median and C-HEI ≥ 70 with PASE change either < or > median. The association between these four categories and MS maintenance was evaluated using General Linear Modeling (GLM). Analyses were stratified by sex and controlled for covariates. Baseline DQ alone was not associated with MS maintenance. Baseline DQ combined with PASE change showed associations with crude and baseline adjusted handgrip strength (p=0.031, p=0.018) and crude and baseline adjusted elbow flexor change (p=0.028, p=0.017) in males only; no significant results were found for knee extensor strength in either males or females. While findings for females were inconclusive, results demonstrate that better adherence to dietary guidelines combined with a more active lifestyle may prevent MS decline among diabetic older males. Additional research is needed on a larger sample since generalization of these results is limited by the small sample size.
