RESUMO

The inhibiting effects of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) were investigated with no change in reactor operation and with increased aeration rate and sludge retention time (SRT) to explore inhibition-alleviating solutions. Additionally, performance recoverability was evaluated. The results showed that the phosphorus removal efficiency in the presence of 0.002-0.092 mg/L CIP for 7 days was only 12.5%. Increasing the aeration rate relieved inhibition (33.5% phosphorus removal efficiency on Day 7), and increasing SRT slowed EBPR performance deterioration. The EBPR performance recovered from CIP inhibition and increases in the aeration rate and SRT resulted in different recovery phenomena. The maximum PO43--P release rate continued to decrease in the first 2 days of the recovery stage and then gradually increased. However, the maximum PO43--P uptake rate immediately increased at different rates among reactors, which might be attributed to variations in the microbial community structure, decreased poly-P content, and enhanced abundances of ABC transporters and quorum sensing. It was found that some microorganisms associated with phosphorus removal were more tolerant to CIP than glycogen accumulating organisms. Moreover, the increased relative abundance of the qepA gene indicated that the microorganisms in the EBPR system had strong antibiotic resistance capacity. The bacterial community structure was significantly affected by CIP and could not recover to the initial structure. The results help to provide technical support for the operation of the EBPR process in the presence of CIP and to increase the understanding of system recoverability.

RESUMO

For this study, we investigated efficient strategies for the recovery of individual links in power grids governed by the direct current (DC) power flow model, under random link failures. Our primary objective was to explore the efficacy of recovering failed links based solely on topological network metrics. In total, we considered 13 recovery strategies, which encompassed 2 strategies based on link centrality values (link betweenness and link flow betweenness), 8 strategies based on the products of node centrality values at link endpoints (degree, eigenvector, weighted eigenvector, closeness, electrical closeness, weighted electrical closeness, zeta vector, and weighted zeta vector), and 2 heuristic strategies (greedy recovery and two-step greedy recovery), in addition to the random recovery strategy. To evaluate the performance of these proposed strategies, we conducted simulations on three distinct power systems: the IEEE 30, IEEE 39, and IEEE 118 systems. Our findings revealed several key insights: Firstly, there were notable variations in the performance of the recovery strategies based on topological network metrics across different power systems. Secondly, all such strategies exhibited inferior performance when compared to the heuristic recovery strategies. Thirdly, the two-step greedy recovery strategy consistently outperformed the others, with the greedy recovery strategy ranking second. Based on our results, we conclude that relying solely on a single metric for the development of a recovery strategy is insufficient when restoring power grids following link failures. By comparison, recovery strategies employing greedy algorithms prove to be more effective choices.

RESUMO

We investigated the impact of nonequilibrium conditions on the transmission and recovery of information through noisy channels. By measuring the recoverability of messages from an information source, we demonstrate that the ability to recover information is connected to the nonequilibrium behavior of the information flow, particularly in terms of sequential information transfer. We discovered that the mathematical equivalence of information recoverability and entropy production characterizes the dissipative nature of information transfer. Our findings show that both entropy production (or recoverability) and mutual information increase monotonically with the nonequilibrium strength of information dynamics. These results suggest that the nonequilibrium dissipation cost can enhance the recoverability of noise messages and improve the quality of information transfer. Finally, we propose a simple model to test our conclusions and found that the numerical results support our findings.

RESUMO

Excess sludge management is a restrictive factor for the development of municipal wastewater treatment plants. The addition of metabolic uncouplers has been proven to be effective in sludge reduction. However, the long-term effect of metabolic uncoupler o-chlorophenol (oCP) on the biological wastewater treatment system operated in anaerobic-oxic mode is still unclear. To this end, two parallel reactors operated in anaerobic-oxic mode with and without 10 mg/L of oCP addition were investigated for 91 days. The results showed that 56.1 ± 2.3% of sludge reduction was achieved in the oCP-added system, and the nitrogen and phosphorus removal ability were negatively affected. Dosing oCP stimulated the formation of microbial products and increased the DNA concentration, but resulted in a decrease in the electronic transport activity of activated sludge. Microbial community analysis further demonstrated that a significant reduction of bacterial richness and diversity occurred after oCP dosing. However, after stopping oCP addition, the pollutant removal ability of activated sludge was gradually increased, but the sludge yield, as well as species richness and diversity, did not recover to the previous level. This study will provide insightful guidance on the long-term application of metabolic uncouplers in the activated sludge system.

RESUMO

Obstructive uropathy can have many causes and can manifest as supravesical, vesical, or infravesical levels of obstruction. Treatment of obstructive uropathy, whether definitive or temporary, has a risk of complications or could worsen the patient's quality of life. Thus, knowledge of the parameters that predict recoverability of renal function after obstructive uropathy treatment is essential for patients and their families. Several studies have evaluated many factors that might potentially predict recoverability of renal function after obstruction release and these essentially are divided into factors predicting unilateral or bilateral obstruction. Almost all unilateral obstruction studies used ureteropelvic junction obstruction cases as their subjects and utilized nuclear scan renography to evaluate kidney recoverability. Factors confirmed as predicting factors for recoverability of renal function were age, hemoglobin level, BUN-to-creatinine ratio, postoperative urine volume and sodium excretion, cortical thickness, type of renal pelvis, hydronephrosis grade, corticomedullary differentiation, parenchymal echogenicity, renal resistive index, and initial kidney function. Thus, these studies all had different criteria for defining the recovery of renal function, and this might explain the differences observed from study to study.

RESUMO

Biological materials exhibit excellent fracture toughness due to their ability to dissipate energy during crack propagating through the combination of various constituents with different stiffnesses. Replicating this mechanism in engineering materials is important in mechanical systems and emerging applications such as flexible electronics and soft robotics. Here a novel liquid metal (LM)-filled polymer microlattice metamaterial, fabricated by projection micro-stereolithography (PµSL) 3D printing and vacuum filling of gallium (Ga), exhibiting high fracture toughness of 0.8 MJ m-3 , is reported. Moreover, the LM metamaterials demonstrate shape memory effect and even essentially recover its original shape upon severe fractures. These unique features arise from the tunable properties of gallium at a relatively low temperature range. The result offers new insights into design and manufacturing mechanical metamaterials with tunable properties and high recoverability for soft robots, flexible electronics, and biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Mechanical metamaterials inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding have gained considerable attention because of their potential to yield deployable and highly tunable assemblies. The inherent foldability of origami structures enlarges the material design space with remarkable properties such as auxeticity and high deformation recoverability and deployability, the latter being key in applications where spatial constraints are pivotal. This work integrates the results of the design, 3D direct laser writing fabrication, and in situ scanning electron microscopic mechanical characterization of microscale origami metamaterials, based on the multimodal assembly of Miura-Ori tubes. The origami-architected metamaterials, achieved by means of microfabrication, display remarkable mechanical properties: stiffness and Poisson's ratio tunable anisotropy, large degree of shape recoverability, multistability, and even reversible auxeticity whereby the metamaterial switches Poisson's ratio sign during deformation. The findings here reported underscore the scalable and multifunctional nature of origami designs, and pave the way toward harnessing the power of origami engineering at small scales.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the role of the angiotensin receptor blocker losartan on the recoverability of renal function after de-obstruction in patients with anuria and oliguria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial in anuric or oliguric patients with calcular obstruction of solitary kidney. Patients with an anomalous kidney or those with an American Society of Anesthesiology score of >3 were excluded. After relief of obstruction, patients were allocated to receive either losartan potassium 25 mg or placebo for 3 months. Serum creatinine (sCr) and renographic glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were measured at nadir and after 3 months. Changes in sCr and renographic GFR were calculated by subtracting the values at nadir from those at 3 months. Improvement, stabilization or deterioration of sCr and renographic GFR were defined as percentage increase or decrease from nadir ≥10%, while changes <10% were considered as stabilization. RESULTS: A total of 76 patients completed 3 months of follow-up. Demographics and peri-operative data were comparable in the two groups. The median (range) sCr change was -1.05 (-1.8, 0.4) and -0.5 (-1.3, 0.1) mg/dL in the losartan and placebo, groups, respectively (P = 0.07). In the losartan group, renographic GFR had improved in 26 (59.1%) and deteriorated in six (13.6%) patients, while, in the placebo group, it had improved in eight (25%) and deteriorated in 10 patients (31.3%; P = 0.01). Losartan also enhanced renographic GFR improvement vs placebo by a median (range) of 6.9 (-9, 44) vs 1.4 (-10, 32) mL/min (P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with anuria and oliguria, losartan treatment contributes to renal function recoverability after relief of calcular obstruction of the solitary kidney.

RESUMO

Mechanical metamaterials with three-dimensional micro- and nanoarchitectures exhibit unique mechanical properties, such as high specific modulus, specific strength, and energy absorption. However, a conflict exists between strength and recoverability in nearly all the mechanical metamaterials reported recently, in particular the architected micro/nanolattices, which restricts the applications of these materials in energy storage/absorption and mechanical actuation. Here, we demonstrated the fabrication of three-dimensional architected composite nanolattices that overcome the strength-recoverability trade-off. The nanolattices under study are made up of a high-entropy alloy-coated (14.2-126.1 nm in thickness) polymer strut (approximately 260 nm in the characteristic size) fabricated via two-photon lithography and magnetron sputtering deposition. In situ uniaxial compression inside a scanning electron microscope showed that these composite nanolattices exhibit a high specific strength of 0.027 MPa/kg m3, an ultrahigh energy absorption per unit volume of 4.0 MJ/m3, and nearly complete recovery after compression under strains exceeding 50%, thus overcoming the traditional strength-recoverability trade-off. During multiple compression cycles, the composite nanolattices exhibit a high energy loss coefficient (converged value after multiple cycles) of 0.5-0.6 at a compressive strain beyond 50%, surpassing the coefficients of all the micro/nanolattices fabricated recently. Our experiments also revealed that, for a given unit cell size, the composite nanolattices coated with a high entropy alloy with thickness in the range of 14-50 nm have the optimal specific modulus, specific strength, and energy absorption per unit volume, which is related to a transition of the dominant deformation mechanism from local buckling to brittle fracture of the struts.

RESUMO

Creating materials that simultaneously possess ultralow thermal conductivity, high stiffness, and damage tolerance is challenging because thermal and mechanical properties are coupled in most fully dense and porous solids. Nanolattices can fill this void in the property space because of their hierarchical design and nanoscale features. We report that nanolattices composed of 24- to 182-nm-thick hollow alumina beams in the octet-truss architecture achieved thermal conductivities as low as 2 mW m-1 K-1 at room temperature while maintaining specific stiffnesses of 0.3 to 3 MPa kg-1 m3 and the ability to recover from large deformations. These nanoarchitected materials possess the same ultralow thermal conductivities as aerogels while attaining specific elastic moduli that are nearly 2 orders of magnitude higher. Our work demonstrates a general route to realizing multifunctional materials that occupy previously unreachable regions within the material property space.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify factors predicting the recoverability of renal function after pyeloplasty in adult patients with ureteropelvic junction obstruction. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 138 adults with unilateral renal obstruction-induced hydronephrosis and who underwent Anderson-Hynes dismembered pyeloplasty from January 2013 to January 2016. Hydronephrosis was classified preoperatively according to the Society for Fetal Urology (SFU) grading system. All patients underwent Doppler ultrasonography, excretory urography, computed tomography, and technetium-99m-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid radioisotope (99mTc DTPA) renography before and after surgery. Renal resistive index (RRI) and 99mTc DTPA renography were repeated at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis identified age, renal pelvic type, SFU grade, preoperative RRI, decline of RRI, and renal parenchyma to hydronephrosis area ratio (PHAR) as independent predictors of renal function recoverability after pyeloplasty. However, preoperative RRI and RRI decline were not significantly associated with recoverability of renal function in patients aged >35 years. Lower preoperative RRI, greater decline in RRI, higher PHAR, lower SFU grade, and extrarenal pelvis were associated with greater improvements in postoperative renal function. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative differential renal function cannot independently predict the recoverability of postoperative renal function in adult patients with unilateral renal obstruction-induced hydronephrosis. SFU grade, renal pelvic type, PHAR, preoperative RRI, and decline in RRI were significantly associated with the recoverability of renal function in adult patients aged <35 years, while only SFU grade, renal pelvic type, and PHAR were significantly associated with renal function recoverability in patients aged ≥35 years. Renal function recovery was better in patients younger than 35 years when compared with older patients.

RESUMO

This paper investigates a proposed phonetically-based account of developmental phonological patterns that lack counterparts in adult typology. Adult listeners perceive some phonemic contrasts more accurately than others, and these differences in perceptual recoverability are posited to represent one influence on phonological typology. One hypothesis suggests that children and adults could differ in their patterns of relative perceptual sensitivity, and these differences could form the basis for some child-specific phonological patterns in production. However, there has been a lack of empirical evidence to support this claim. This study used a nonword discrimination task to investigate differences in perceptual recoverability across contrasts and contexts in typically-developing preschool children. Participants heard nonwords that were identical or differed by a single segment in initial or final position. Results revealed general agreement between child and adult listeners in the relative discriminability of different featural contrasts. For certain contrasts, discrimination accuracy was significantly greater in initial than final position, mirroring an asymmetry seen in adults. Overall, these results suggest that perceptual discrimination in preschool-aged children is broadly congruent with patterns of relative sensitivity observed in adult listeners. These findings suggest that factors other than perceptual recoverability should be explored to account for child-specific phonological patterns.

RESUMO

Dyes pollution is well known for their hazardous impacts on human health and the environment. The removal of dyes from wastewater has become an important issue. In this study, magnetic micrometer-sized particles AL-CTS@MNPs were synthesized from alkaline lignin (AL) and chitosan (CTS) by "one-pot method". The adsorbent presented higher selectivity adsorption effect on anionic dyes than amphoteric and cationic dyes, and even no adsorption effect on cationic methylene blue (MB), which showed that the anionic dyes could be better separated from the other two types of dyes. The adsorption isotherms of the dyes were highly consistent with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 329.50 mg/g for methyl orange (MO) and 20.00 mg/g for rhodamine B (RhB). AL-CTS@MNPs showed good adsorption of anionic dyes (MO) in the pH range of 3-9. Meanwhile, the adsorbent AL-CTS@MNPs were also characterized, showing rough surface with specific surface areas of 37.38 m2/g, pore diameter of 95.8 nm and porosity of 17.62 %. The particle sizes were ranged from 800 µm to 1300 µm. The electrostatic attraction and π-π* electron donor-acceptor interactions were the main forces between the adsorbent and anionic dyes. While the electrostatic repulsive force between the adsorbent and the cationic dyes resulted in the non-absorption of MB by AL-CTS@MNPs. Subsequently, the adsorbent maintained a removal rate of >95 % after five adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating its excellent stability and recoverability. Ultimately, the prepared AL-CTS@MNPs illuminated good prospect on complex components dyes wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Superhydrophobic separation membranes are considered to be one of the most promising technologies for oil-water separation. However, the plastic waste generated from discarded membranes poses a challenge to the preparation of degraded superhydrophobic separation membranes for achieving eco-friendly separation. In this study, superhydrophobic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) membranes were fabricated using a non-solvent induced phase separation method assisted by l-cysteine modified carbon dots (Cys-CDs). The synergistic effect of Cys-CDs-induced crystallization behavior of PLA and the phase separation process results in the evolution of the surface of the PLA-based membrane from a pistil-like structure to a multi-level micro-nano structure composed of dense lamellar nanofibers and microspheres with an increase in Cys-CDs content. At a Cys-CDs content of 5 wt%, the surface roughness of PLA-based separation membrane reached its maximum, and the water contact angle was as high as 159°. Remarkably, the superhydrophobic Cys-CDs/PLA membrane exhibited promising performance in the separation of water-in-oil emulsions, with a rejection rate of 99.98% and a flux of 315.74 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1. Additionally, the superhydrophobic Cys-CDs/PLA separation membrane also demonstrates impressive properties such as acid-alkali resistance and rapid recycling into high-value chemicals. Consequently, this rapidly recoverable superhydrophobic porous Cys-CDs/PLA membrane shows great potential for practical applications in actual oil-water separation.

RESUMO

Carbon nitrides featuring three-dimensional frameworks of CN4 tetrahedra are one of the great aspirations of materials science, expected to have a hardness greater than or comparable to diamond. After more than three decades of efforts to synthesize them, no unambiguous evidence of their existence has been delivered. Here, the high-pressure high-temperature synthesis of three carbon-nitrogen compounds, tI14-C3 N4 , hP126-C3 N4 , and tI24-CN2 , in laser-heated diamond anvil cells, is reported. Their structures are solved and refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Physical properties investigations show that these strongly covalently bonded materials, ultra-incompressible and superhard, also possess high energy density, piezoelectric, and photoluminescence properties. The novel carbon nitrides are unique among high-pressure materials, as being produced above 100 GPa they are recoverable in air at ambient conditions.

RESUMO

Similar to natural muscle fibers, coiled artificial muscle fibers provide a straightforward contraction. However, unlike natural muscle fibers, their recovery from the contracted state to the initial state requires high stress, resulting in almost zero work during a full actuation cycle. Herein, a self-recoverable coiled artificial muscle fiber was prepared by conformally coating an elastic carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber with a very thin liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) sheath. The as-obtained muscle fiber demonstrated excellent actuation properties comprising 56.9% contractile stroke, 1522%/s contraction rate, 7.03 kW kg-1 power density, and 32,000 stable cycles. The LCE chains were helically aligned in a nematic phase, and the phase change of the LCE caused by Joule heating drove the actuation process. Moreover, the LCE/CNT fiber had a well-separated, torsionally stable, and elastic coiled structure, which permitted large contractile strokes and acted as an elastic template for external-stress-free recovery. Thus, the use of self-recoverable muscle fibers to mimic the natural muscles for object dragging, multidirectional bending, and quick striking was demonstrated.

RESUMO

Mg-doped HAP aerogel (MHAPA) was firstly in situ prepared via freeze-drying-calcination technology to capture U(VI). The U(VI) removal capacity by MHAPA even arrived 2685.6 mg g-1, which was about 2 times over purchased HAP, illustrating that the incorporation of Mg ions could greatly enhance the U(VI) removal capacity. Compared with HAP, MHAPA also showed better anti-ion interference ability and dynamic removal performances. In comparison with other HAP-based adsorbents, MHAPA possessed good recyclability and its desorption rate was up to 93.4% in the first cycle. The excellent U(VI) removal performances of MHAPA might be owing to its low crystallinity and grain size, fast ion exchange rate and partial ionization under acidic conditions, which would accelerate the process of electrostatic attraction, ion-exchange, and complexation to immobilize U(VI). To sum up, the prepared MHAPA was expected to be an environmentally friendly, recyclable and effective adsorbent to immobilize U(VI) in actual wastewater.

RESUMO

Bio-based thermoplastic polyurethanes have attracted increasing attention as advanced shape memory materials. Using the prepolymer method, novel fast-responding shape memory thermoplastic polyurethanes (SMTPUs) were prepared from 100% bio-based polyester polyol, poly-propylene succinate derived from corn oil, diphenyl methane diisocyanate, and bio-based 1,3-propanediol as a chain extender. The morphologies of the SMTPUs were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, which revealed the interdomain spacing between the hard and soft phases, the degree of phase separation, and the intermixing level between the hard and soft phases. The thermal and mechanical properties of the SMTPUs were also investigated, wherein a high hard segment content imparted unique properties that rendered the SMTPUs suitable for shape memory applications at varying temperatures. More specifically, the SMTPUs exhibited a high level of elastic elongation and good mechanical strength. Following compositional optimization, a tensile strength of 24-27 MPa was achieved, in addition to an elongation at break of 358-552% and a hardness of 84-92 Shore A. Moreover, the bio-based SMTPU exhibited a shape recovery of 100%, thereby indicating its potential for use as an advanced temperature-dependent shape memory material with an excellent shape recoverability.

RESUMO

Owing to the pervasive noise and crash hazards, tough microlattices with sound absorption capabilities are sought-after. However, typical truss microlattices are unable to fulfill this requirement. To overcome this, herein, we report a new design strategy for truss microlattices via introducing the concept of interpenetrating hollow struts, which thereby constitutes a novel interpenetrating hollow microlattice metamaterial (IHMM). The design is based on interweaved unit cells of a hollow octet-truss (HOT) and a hollow rhombic dodecahedron-like (HRDL) truss. Experimentally demonstrated, the IHMM displays a synergistic gain in both sound absorption and mechanical properties that substantially surpass that of its constituent lattices. High sound absorption coefficients (α > 0.99) and broad half-absorption (3.2 kHz) are observed, with the average α being 110.6 and 85.3% higher than those of the HOT and HRDL, respectively. The sound absorption mechanism is attributed to the presence of cascaded Helmholtz resonance, which is then fully elucidated by impedance and damping analyses. The IHMM also outperforms its constituents in specific strength. A simultaneous high strength (4 MPa) and recoverability (80% strain) and pseudo-reusability are also observed. The mechanisms behind the mechanical reinforcement and exceptional robustness are thoroughly revealed. Overall, this work offers insights into developing multifunctional engineering materials.

RESUMO

African swine fever has damaged the foundation of China's hog industry, caused a serious decline in hog production, highlighted the contradiction between supply and demand in the pork market, and led to major economic and social impacts. The industrial resilience of 31 Chinese provinces to African swine fever shock and its spatial and temporal differentiation characteristics from 2018 to 2021 were measured in this study from the two dimensions of resistance and recoverability. Using Geodetector, the key factors influencing the resilience of China's hog industry were explored. The results showed that 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 represented the resistance and recovery periods of the hog industry under African swine fever shock, respectively, with poor resilience characterizing the resistance period and improved resilience characterizing the recovery period. At the early stages of the African swine fever outbreak, the hog industries in Tianjin, Shanxi, Guangxi, and Yunnan had robust resistance due to the slaughter rate, economic level, mortality rate, carcass weight, and culling rate in those areas. At the most severe stage of the outbreak, resistance was generally poor in all provinces due to the slaughter rate, per capita consumption, and scale level at the time. During the period of rapid recovery in hog production, the recoverability of each province was very strong due to the industrial structure, culling rate, economic level, and resource carrying capacity at that time. During the reasonable adjustment period of hog production capacity, the recoverability based on the breeding sow inventory in 13 provinces, including Henan, Shandong, and other large hog-breeding provinces, was negative due to the scale level, slaughter rate, per capita consumption, and resource carrying at that time. Taking measures to enhance the resilience of the hog industry, strengthen the prevention and control of hog epidemics, improve the monitoring and early warning mechanisms, and enhance the ability of the hog industry to cope with major animal epidemics is recommended.
