RESUMO

Immunologists are very social people-they love to meet other immunologists and talk about immunology (and immunologists). Constantly! γδ T-cell researchers are no exception. On the contrary, as there are not so many of them compared to, say, researchers working on dendritic cells, they especially crave frequent interactions with like-minded scientists. This is where the technological solutions being developed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic come into play that have, almost overnight, allowed researchers to hold meetings and lectures online. We here describe how we set up the virtual 'γδ T Cell Club', a monthly webinar series that aims to bring the field closer together, and present our musings about what we have learned from this experience, which we hope is useful for other researchers interested in connecting online.

RESUMO

The Canadian League Against Epilepsy initiated a virtual epilepsy education program, conducting 29 webinars from March 2021 to September 2023. We report our experience, with the goal to inspire other groups to develop inclusive, equitable, and free educational spaces with a worldwide reach. Monthly sessions drew a median attendance of 118 participants, predominantly Canadian but also international, including physicians (58.9%) and trainees (22.8%). Post-webinar surveys (average 40% response rate) noted high satisfaction, a strong inclination to recommend the sessions, and an interest in clinical case-based topics. We plan to consider integrating a self-assessment section evaluating knowledge gained after each seminar.

OBJECTIVES: The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept has gained prominence in maternal and child health (MCH), emphasizing how early-life factors impact later-life non-communicable diseases. However, a knowledge-practice gap exists in applying DOHaD principles among healthcare professionals. Healthy Early Life Moments in Singapore (HELMS) introduced webinars to bridge this gap and empower healthcare professionals. We aimed to conduct a preliminary assessment to gain early insights into the outreach and effectiveness of the educational initiative offered with the HELMS webinars. METHODS: We employed a pragmatic serial cross-sectional study approach and targeted healthcare professionals involved in MCH care. We also collected and analyzed data on webinar registration and attendance, participants' profession and organizational affiliations, and post-webinar survey responses. RESULTS: The median webinar attendance rate was 59.6 % (25th-75th percentile: 58.4-60.8 %). Nurses represented 68.6 % of attendees (n=2,589 out of 3,774). Post-webinar surveys revealed over 75 % of the participants providing positive responses to 14 out of 15 survey questions concerning content, delivery, applicability to work, and organization. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of the HELMS webinars provided insight into the outreach and early effectiveness in enhancing healthcare professionals' knowledge and confidence in delivering DOHaD education. Bridging the knowledge-practice gap remains a crucial goal.

Anatomical education has a long and colourful history, ranging from the anatomical theatre and artistic flourish of the renaissance period to modern-day virtual reality. Over the centuries, the body has been taken apart and mapped in exquisite detail. We are now able to access virtual models of the body anywhere, anytime, which allow for unlimited dissection and manipulation. Despite this progress, the majority of anatomical educators continue to deliver anatomy in a laboratory setting, using hands-on learning approaches such as dissection of cadaveric material. These methods are robustly supported by educational theories, such as information processing theory and experiential learning but require students to be present in a dissection room with access to human cadaveric material.The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic forced anatomy educators out of familiar dissection laboratories and into unfamiliar and uncomfortable virtual environments. When moving online during the pandemic, active learning theories, which form the basis of face-to-face classes, were used to construct interactive anatomy webinars to replace the on-campus practical laboratory-based teaching. The focus of these webinars was on student interactivity, and visual content with drawing activities, breakout groups, virtual three-dimensional models, and identifying activities being integrated into each session. Student feedback showed an appreciation of the interactive nature of these sessions, and staff were surprised at how well the webinars delivered engaging and interactive teaching at a time of limited social contact. This approach was not only useful during the restrictions of a pandemic but could offer a complementary approach to delivering practical anatomy teaching as we return to blended and on-campus learning again.

In September 2020, the new Editors of the European Heart Journal (EHJ) wrote the following in their inaugural editorial: "The fundamental mission of the Journal remains the reduction of the global burden of cardiovascular disease. We aspire to advance this aim by worldwide teamwork to communicate practice-changing research, inspire clinical cardiologists, and pursue rigour and transparency in the application of science at the service of human health. The Journal will strive to lead the field in its impact, influence, and reach". After more than one year of experience the Editors hope the cardiological community will agree that they are fulfilling this mission. As stewards of the EHJ, the Editor's primary goal is not solely to achieve a high Impact Factor (which attests to the scientific quality and influence of our publications) but also to elevate the practice of cardiovascular medicine worldwide. Accordingly, various initiatives of the EHJ strive to strengthen further links among Editors, Authors, Reviewers and Readers through a series of coordinated and diverse activities, including webinars, active social media presence, and active participation at congresses worldwide. The Editors are proud to serve one of the most important scientific journals in cardiovascular medicine.

PURPOSE: Some female upper extremity (UE) surgeons face unique barriers to participation at in-person academic and professional society meetings due to disparate childcare and household duties relative to male surgeons. Webinars may alleviate some of this travel burden and allow for more balanced participation. Our purpose was to evaluate gender diversity within academic webinars with a focus on UE surgery. METHODS: We queried webinars conducted by the following professional societies: American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), American Association for Hand Surgery, and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons societies. Webinars with an UE focus produced between January 2020 and June 2022 were included. Demographic characteristics, including sex and race, were recorded for webinar speakers and moderators. RESULTS: A total of 175 UE webinars were identified, with 173 of 175 (99%) having functioning video links. The 173 webinars had 706 speakers and 173 (25%) were women. Female representation in professional society webinars exceeded their overall participation in their sponsoring organizations. Although women comprise 6% and 15% of the overall American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and ASSH membership, respectively, they accounted for 26% of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons webinar speakers and 19% of ASSH webinar speakers. CONCLUSIONS: Between 2020 and 2022, women comprised 25% of speakers for professional society academic webinars with a focus on UE surgery, which exceeds the proportion of women in the individual sponsoring professional societies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Online webinars may mitigate some of the barriers that female UE surgeons face with respect to professional development and academic advancement. Although female participation in UE webinars often exceeded the current rates of female members in the individual professional societies, women remain underrepresented in UE surgery, relative to the percentage of female medical students.

This Community Resource paper introduces the range of materials developed by the INDEPTH (Impact of Nuclear Domains on Gene Expression and Plant Traits) COST Action made available through the INDEPTH Academy. Recent rapid growth in understanding of the significance of epigenetic controls in plant and crop science has led to a need for shared, high-quality resources, standardization of protocols, and repositories for open access data. The INDEPTH Academy provides a range of masterclass tutorials, standardized protocols, and teaching webinars, together with a rapidly developing repository to support imaging and spatial analysis of the nucleus and deep learning for automated analysis. These resources were developed partly as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also driven by needs and opportunities identified by the INDEPTH community of ~200 researchers in 80 laboratories from 32 countries. This community report outlines the resources produced and how they will be extended beyond the INDEPTH project, but also aims to encourage the wider community to engage with epigenetics and nuclear structure by accessing these resources.

OBJECTIVE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, regular teaching for core surgical trainees (CSTs) in Northern Ireland was cancelled at short notice, leaving a significant gap in training. We aimed to develop an effective core surgical teaching programme, within the remit of government regulations, to ensure training was not negatively affected by COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A novel virtual teaching programme was designed and implemented regionally across Northern Ireland. One-year free Affiliate Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) was provided for Northern Ireland CSTs, allowing access to RCSEd online webinars. A weekly teaching schedule based on the Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) exam curriculum and accompanied by a webinar was created and disseminated to trainees. Senior surgeons were recruited to conduct a virtual teaching session via videoconferencing. RESULTS: Ten teaching sessions were conducted over three months. Feedback was collated, with positive results and requests for virtual teaching to continue. As such, the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) adopted the teaching programme as their new primary method of central teaching for Northern Ireland CSTs during the pandemic. CONCLUSION: A novel, highly successful teaching programme was developed in Northern Ireland to meet the training needs of CSTs resulting in a sustained change to training. Virtual surgical teaching can be as effective as face-to-face didactic learning and may be imperative in a foreseeably socially distanced world.

Large class sizes and often few instructors in anatomy courses make it challenging for student laboratory groups to have their questions addressed in a timely manner. Instructors are often unaware of the number of requests for assistance, as well as the order in which assistance is requested, and students often spend a long time waiting for an instructor to become available. As a result of brainstorming with some of our students, a call button system of sorts was suggested. Instructors in consultation with the college's IT department came up with the idea of using Zoom Meetings question and answer (Q&A) feature to manage student questions. Zoom allows one to broadcast a Zoom Meeting to up to 50,000 participant attendees, and instructors, logged in as panelists (on a mobile device, e.g., iPad), can interact with the student attendees via the Q&A feature. The students join the webinar using their dissection table number as their ID and request assistance in the Q&A. These requests show up with a time stamp and are automatically queued on the panelist's Q&A window. Instructors employ the type answer feature to acknowledge the question by typing in their respective initials, which can be seen live by the other instructors (panelists). This allows student questions to be queued so that the instructors can address them in a timely, first-in/first-out order. Student feedback regarding the use of this system for the Small Animal Anatomy course was positive.

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of presenting a 3-week intensive course in tooth morphology to first year dental students using "at-home" waxing projects and webinars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Students were provided with the instrumentation and materials required to complete 5 waxing projects at home during the 3-week course. In the same time period, the didactic content was presented via 11 webinar sessions. A postcourse survey provided student perspectives regarding this new experience. RESULTS: Students were able to effectively complete high-quality waxing projects at home by using step-by-step images and videos but the survey indicated an overwhelming preference for in-person faculty feedback. Webinars based on the students having studied the 3D Tooth Atlas and an instructor reviewing content in the Atlas was effective in teaching the didactic aspect of tooth morphology as evidenced by the student grades and survey results. However, most of the students indicated a preference for physically going to class and being able to interact with faculty and classmates as opposed to online webinars. The condensed 3-week version of the course was part of an expanded 4-week student orientation and worked well, allowing other clinical precursor courses to occur before their usual time in the curriculum, thereby allowing students to begin earlier patient treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The at-home waxing exercises produced very good results by having the students use step-by-step images and videos in the 3D Tooth Atlas. However, the students indicated a strong preference for personal faculty feedback that was not available at home. Students effectively learned the didactic aspects of tooth morphology through the webinars with accompanying use of the 3D Tooth Atlas but again most students prefer physically going to class and being able to interact with faculty and classmates. These preferences for contact with classmates and faculty supports the natural human desire for personal interactions with other human beings.

Social Media usage has been shown to increase in situations of natural disaster and other crises. It is crucial for the scientific community to understand how social media works in order to enhance our capabilities and make a more resilient community. Through social media communication, the scientific community can collaborate around the globe in a faster way the most important findings of a disease, with a decreased knowledge transition time to other healthcare providers (HCPs). This is greatly important to coordinate research and knowledge during a time of uncertainty and protentional fake news. During the 2020 global pandemic, social media has become an ally but also a potential threat. High volumes of information compressed into a short period can result in overwhelmed HCPs trying to discern fact from noise. A major limitation of social media currently is the ability to quickly disseminate false information which can confuse and distract. Society relies on educated scientists and physicians to be leaders in delivering fact-based information to the public. For this reason, in times of crises it is important to be leaders in the conversation of social media to guide correct and helpful information and knowledge to the masses looking for answers.

AIMS: To explore nursing students' perception of peer learning during cross-cultural learning activities through student-led webinars. DESIGN: An exploratory qualitative study. METHODS: Thematic analysis of data collected from reflective journals and focus-group interviews of participating nursing students across three international universities in Australia, Hong Kong, and Sweden during autumn 2017. RESULTS: Three themes were identified: peer learning as creation of friendship; peer learning from interactions that went beyond what was originally intended; and peer learning as empowered learning. CONCLUSION: Combining peer learning as an educational approach with cross-cultural and student-led webinars provided new perspectives. On-line learning across global boundaries, based on a sound educational model, creates new opportunities for internationalization without straining individual and institutional financial resources.

Technology provides an opportunity to engage with a variety of audiences to provide cancer education, information and support. Webinars are one such format that allow live presentations by experts that can be accessed online, from people's homes or other convenient locations. In 2015, Cancer Council Victoria (CCV) undertook a program of work to design and evaluate the effectiveness of a suite of webinars: four designed for people affected by cancer and two for health professionals. Webinars included a series of expert presentations, a panel discussion and an interactive component where participants posed questions to the panel. Evaluation included analysis of online metrics and a post-event survey covering experience and satisfaction with the webinar, self-reported changes in knowledge of key webinar concepts and confidence to discuss concepts with health professionals or patients. A total of 438 people participated in the webinars (41.5% of 1056 registrations), and 207 post-event surveys were completed by participants (47.3%). Overall, 90.1% indicated that webinar content was relevant to their interests and needs. Self-ratings of knowledge, awareness of resources and confidence to discuss webinar topics increased after the webinar. The majority (63.9%) had not participated in a webinar before, and 92.6% were interested in participating in future webinars. Over half of respondents (52.8%) had not accessed CCV resources before. This work provided a new opportunity to consolidate consistency of delivery and evaluation of webinars, demonstrating they are an effective, acceptable, accessible and sustainable vehicle for delivering information and support to health professionals and people affected by cancer.

At the FUN workshop at Dominican University in July 2017, we presented a session on activities of the Neuroscience Training Committee (NTC) of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN). We focused on activities that pertain to undergraduate neuroscience education and how NTC could help the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) achieve its goals and objectives in the coming years. We outlined a brief history of how FUN became involved with the Association of Neuroscience Departments and Programs, one of the parent organizations from which the current NTC evolved. We provided examples of the efforts that the NTC is making to include more activities that support undergraduate neuroscience education, including providing support for FUN workshops and its accompanying special issue in the Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education (JUNE). In addition, we solicited feedback from the participants at this session for ideas for how the NTC could better serve members of FUN. This discussion yielded questions about the value of Institutional Program (IP) memberships for undergraduate institutions and suggestions, such as reduced membership fees and discounts for abstracts, and/or registration attendance at the annual SfN conference for individuals at colleges or universities with IP membership. Other suggestions included providing short courses in undergraduate pedagogy (including program and curriculum development), sponsorships for developing new assessment tools or innovative curricula, and providing more support for JUNE. We concluded our session by encouraging FUN members to become active in NTC programs and to seek membership to the NTC and other SfN committees to ensure that the voice of undergraduate neuroscience education will continue to be heard.

INTRODUCTION: The SAFE EUROPE project, a European-funded project, addressed educational gaps of Therapeutic Radiographers/Radiation Therapists (TR/RTTs) by offering a series of free webinars. This study aimed to assess the quality of these webinars and their impact on professional practice. METHODS: Data collection involved two methods: an automated feedback form administered after each webinar, supplemented by a survey disseminated through social media. The collected data encompassed attendance statistics, participants' professions and geographic locations, webinar quality assessment, the acquisition of new knowledge and skills, the application of this newfound knowledge in practice, and the likelihood of recommending these webinars. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyse the quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. Ethical approval for the study was obtained. RESULTS: 11,286 individuals from 107 countries participated in 18 webinars. Despite 72.7% being radiographers, a diverse array of professionals attended the webinars, including medical physicists, oncologists, radiologists, and academics. Remarkably, 98.7% of respondents rated the webinar quality as either good or excellent. The average rating for the likelihood of recommending these webinars to colleagues was 8.96/10. A substantial proportion of respondents expressed agreement or strong agreement that the webinars enhanced their knowledge (85%) and skills (73%). Furthermore, 79% of participants indicated that the webinars motivated them to change practice, with 65% having already implemented these changes. The insights from open-ended questions corroborated these findings. CONCLUSION: The webinars effectively achieved the aim of the SAFE EUROPE project to enhance practice by increasing knowledge and skills. Participants overwhelmingly endorsed the quality of these webinars. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Webinars represent a cost-efficient training tool that reaches a global audience and various radiography/radiotherapy professions. The development of additional webinars is strongly recommended.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 disrupted services received by persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) worldwide. The International Disability Alliance declared the need for a disability-inclusive response to the COVID-19 crisis, as decreased access to health care services for individuals living with varying levels of function was unacceptable. As a result, an SCI community in Canada created a novel webinar-based strategy aimed at improving access to self-management information for people living with SCI and other stakeholders. However, although telehealth practices have previously been used effectively in SCI management and rehabilitation, little to no scholarship has investigated the outcomes of implementing a webinar-based telehealth strategy in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to understand the outcomes of implementing the webinar series. Specifically, the authors aimed to determine the reach of the series; understand its impact on social connectedness, perceptions of disability, and overall quality of interactions among persons with SCI, their families, service providers, and the public at large; and explore the long-term sustainability of the initiative. METHODS: The authors implemented a community-based participatory strategy to define a convergent mixed methods design to triangulate qualitative and quantitative data collected simultaneously. Quantitative methods included pop-up questions administered during the live webinars, surveys administered following webinars, and an analysis of YouTube analytics. Qualitative methods included semistructured interviews with persons with SCI and health care providers who attended at least one webinar. The results were integrated, following methods adapted from Creswell and Clark. RESULTS: A total of 234 individuals attended at least 1 of the 6 webinars that took place during the 6-month study period. In total, 13.2% (31/234) of the participants completed the postwebinar survey, and 23% (7/31) participated in the semistructured interviews. The reach of the webinar series was mainly to persons with SCI, followed by health professionals, with most of them living in urban areas. The topics sexuality and research were the most viewed on YouTube. The knowledge disseminated during the webinars was mainly perceived as valid and useful, related to the fact that the presentation format involved people with lived experience and clinical experts. The webinars did not necessarily help build a new extended community of people involved in SCI but helped strengthen the existing community of people with SCI in Alberta. The webinar positively influenced the perceptions of normality and disability regarding people with SCI. The webinar format was perceived as highly usable and accessible. CONCLUSIONS: The webinar series was associated with improved participant knowledge of what is possible to achieve after an SCI and their perceptions of disability. The long-term implementation of this initiative is feasible, but further considerations to increase its reach to rural areas and ensure the integration of diverse individuals should be taken.

The current study aims to assess the development of the knowledge generation program of the European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions (Endo-ERN) from its start in 2019 until December 2021, with special reference to webinars. We analyzed the number of webinars and live/postevent participants and whether participation and engagement of the attendees changed over time. A total of 30 (86%) self-prepared webinars comprising 300 h of knowledge and competence sharing were broadcasted (2019 - 3; 2020 - 13; 2021 - 14). A total of six webinars were broadcasted live prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic (https://endo-ern.eu/events/webinars/). The most active main thematic group (MTG) was MTG3 Genetic Disorders of Glucose and Insulin Homeostasis with eight (27%) webinars. Two (25%) MTGs fulfilled the goal to prepare at least two to three webinars per year. Patients were actively involved in 20% of the accounted webinars as both creators and presenters. The total number of live and postevent participants was 3023. The availability of the webinars after the live broadcast increased their outreach with a larger number of postevent viewers (n = 1629, 54%). Within the formal structured evaluation of the webinars, 40-85% of the participants replied on separate occasions and helped improve content. The free webinar access is among the perceived reasons for the rapidly increasing number of total hits to the Endo-ERN website. In conclusion, for its short existence, the Endo-ERN rapidly developed educational outreach, and further efforts to attract creators and learners are warranted.

Science outreach programs that enable real-time interactions between scientists and school-aged children are known to positively impact learning gains and students' perceptions of scientists. To expand K-12 outreach by scientists, it is important to build structured outreach programs which offer scientists well-defined opportunities, while providing school students regular and diverse interactions. We describe Talk To A Scientist, a science outreach platform in India, where scientists use a webinar-based approach to share their research with K-12 students (6 to 16 years). Running weekly for nearly 3 years, Talk To A Scientist has hosted over 100 live interactions, with a wide reach to participants across the country. Here, we outline the framework used to build Talk To A Scientist and discuss key gains, considerations, and challenges in the development of the program. We also suggest potential adaptations with which this framework can serve as a guideline for the implementation of similar K-12 outreach programs across diverse country- and context-specific settings.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe chronic illness and patients with ME/CFS are often medically underserved in Germany and other countries. One contributing factor is health professionals' lack of knowledge about epidemiology, diagnostic criteria, and treatment of ME/CFS. Opportunities are scarce for health professionals to receive continuing medical education on ME/CFS. The current research addressed this need for further education and investigated the gain of knowledge from a webinar for German-speaking health professionals. In two studies (total sample: N = 378), participants in the intervention condition completed a knowledge test twice (before and after webinar participation). Study 2 also included a waiting-list control condition with repeated response to the knowledge test without webinar participation between measurements. Results showed that at baseline, most participants had seen patients with ME/CFS, but confidence in diagnosing and treating ME/CFS was only moderate-to-low. In the intervention condition, but not in the control condition, knowledge about ME/CFS increased between the first and the second knowledge test. These results indicate that the webinar was successful in increasing health professionals' knowledge about ME/CFS. We concluded that webinars can be a cost-efficient and effective tool in providing health professionals with large-scale continuing medical education about ME/CFS.

BACKGROUND: Since it first started operating in 2017, the European Reference Network for Rare Neurological Diseases (ERN-RND) implemented a multi-channel communication strategy to effectively reach its target audience: healthcare professionals, patients, researchers, industry representatives and the general public. We first created a website containing useful and up to date information, followed by social media accounts. Here, the analytical data collected about the ERN-RND website and social media channels was compared (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) during two periods: October 2018 to September 2019, and the year after the ERN-RND free educational webinars were launched: from October 2019 to September 2020. This allowed us to quantify the impact of offering a tangible product (webinars) on the communication strategy. RESULTS: The analytical data obtained from October 2018 to September 2019 and from October 2019 to September 2020 clearly shows a significant increase in traffic and followers since the launch of the ERN-RND webinars in November 2019. We also created a communication survey which was disseminated between February and June 2021. We collected responses from 61 people: 38 healthcare professionals, 11 scientists, 10 patients (advocates), 2 industry representatives, 1 patient association, 1 charity representative, 1 resident and 1 master student. Most respondents answered "webinars" as the number one reason when asked about which content they look for on the ERN-RND website. CONCLUSIONS: Offering a tangible product-such as the webinars presented in this report-to a specific target group (healthcare professionals) supported our communication strategy by driving traffic to ERN-RND communication channels. It has also successfully tackled ERN-RND's general aim: by enabling the flow of knowledge on rare neurological and movement disorders to the medical community in hospitals treating patients with these rare and complex conditions, patients ultimately benefit from improved and faster diagnosis, care, and treatment. We aim to set up similar strategies to effectively reach other or the same target groups. For healthcare professionals, organising eConsultations via the Clinical Patient Management System or disseminating standards of care such as diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms as well as clinical practice guidelines might offer potential. For the patient community, organising customised and multilingual webinars could also work.
