Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), commonly called spotted wing Drosophila, is an important agricultural pest recognised worldwide. D. suzukii is a pest of soft-skinned fruits as females can lay eggs in ripening fruit before harvest. While strains for genetic biocontrol of D. suzukii have been made, the development of transgenic D. suzukii strains and their further screening remain a challenge partly due to the lack of phenotypically trackable genetic-markers, such as those widely used with the model genetic organism D. melanogaster. Here, we have used CRISPR/Cas9 to introduce heritable mutations in the eye colour genes white, cinnabar and sepia, which are located on the X, second and third chromosomes, respectively. Strains were obtained, which were homozygous for a single mutation. Genotyping of the established strains showed insertion and/or deletions (indels) at the targeted sites. A strain homozygous for mutations in cinnabar and sepia showed a pale-yellow eye colour at eclosion but darkened to a sepia colour after a week. The fecundity and fertility of some of the cinnabar and sepia strains were comparable with the wild type. Although white mutant males were previously reported to be sterile, we found that sterility is not fully penetrant and we have been able to maintain white-eyed strains for over a year. The cinnabar, sepia and white mutant strains developed in this study should facilitate future genetic studies in D. suzukii and the development of strains for genetic control of this pest.

The interaction between mercury (Hg) and inorganic compounds, including selenium (Se), sulfur (S), and halogens (X = Cl, Br, or I), plays a critical role in the global mercury cycle. However, most previously reported mercury compounds are susceptible to reduction, leading to the release of elemental mercury (Hg0) and causing secondary pollution. In this study, we unveil a groundbreaking discovery that underscores the vital role of halogenation in creating exceptionally stable Hg3Se2X2 compounds. Through the dynamic interplay of Hg, Se, and halogens, an intermediary stage denoted [HgSe]m[HgX2]n emerges, and this transformative process significantly elevates the stabilization of mercury. Remarkably, halogen ions strategically occupy pores at the periphery of HgSe clusters, engendering a more densely packed atomic arrangement of Hg, Se, and halogen components. A marked enhancement in both thermal and acid stability is observed, wherein temperatures ascend from 130 to 300 °C (transitioning from HgSe to Hg3Se2Cl2). This sequence of escalating stability follows the order HgSe < Hg3Se2I2 < Hg3Se2Br2 < Hg3Se2Cl2 for thermal resilience, complemented by virtually absent acid leaching. This innovative compound formation fundamentally alters the transformation pathways of gaseous Hg0 and ionic mercury (Hg2+), resulting in highly efficient in situ removal of both Hg0 and Hg2+ ions. These findings pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in mercury stabilization and environmental remediation strategies, offering a comprehensive solution through the creation of chemically stable precipitates.

The atmosphere is the primary medium for long-distance transport and transformation of elemental mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxin. The recent discovery of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of even-mass Hg isotopes (even-MIF, measured as Δ200Hg and Δ204Hg) in the atmosphere is surprising and can potentially serve as a powerful tracer in understanding Hg biogeochemistry. Far-ultraviolet (UVC) light-induced gas-phase reactions have been suspected as a likely cause for even-MIF, yet the mechanism remains unknown. Here, we present the first experimental evidence of large-scale even-MIF caused by UVC-induced (wavelength: 254 nm) Hg oxidation in synthetic air at the pressure (46-88 kPa) and temperature (233-298 K) resembling those of the lower atmosphere. We observe negatively correlated Δ200Hg and Δ204Hg signatures with values as low as -50‰ and as high as 550‰, respectively, in the remaining atomic Hg pool. The magnitude of even-MIF signatures decreases with decreasing pressure with the Δ200Hg/Δ204Hg ratio being similar to that observed in global precipitation. This even-MIF can be explained by photodissociation of mercuric oxides that are photochemically formed in the UVC-irradiated Hg-O2 system. We propose that similar processes occurring in the atmosphere, where mercuric oxide species serve as intermediates, are responsible for the observed even-MIF in the environment.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are chronic diseases generally treated with conventional therapies alone. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of homeopathy as an adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy in individuals with periodontitis and T2D. DESIGN: 85 individuals, age between 35 and 70 years, of both genders, participated in this randomized study; 70 patients were from the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They were divided into 2 groups: G1, individuals with periodontitis without systemic conditions; and G-2, individuals with periodontitis and T2D. Both groups received homeopathic treatment and were evaluated in clinical and laboratory examinations. The medication used was chosen based on the similarity principle: Berberis 6CH, Mercurius Solubilis/Belladona /Hepar Sulfur and a Pyrogenium 200CH biotherapic. Medications were prescribed in diluted low ultra-diluted concentration doses for all signs and symptoms, while biotherapics were used for chronic stimulation. SETTING: The study was performed in Brazil by university research professors of homeopathy and periodontics. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant clinical and laboratory improvements during the study from baseline to 1 year with reductions in total cholesterol (total-C), triglycerides, glucose, glycated hemoglobin (A1cHb), uric acid and C-reactive protein (CRP). Statistical and descriptive analyses were performed. For most parameters, G1 performed better than G2 (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Homeopathy as an adjunct to periodontal treatment improves local and systemic clinics and can provide better health conditions for patients with or without T2D.

It is widely known that the vivid hue of red cinnabar can darken or turn black. Many authors have studied this transformation, but only a few in the context of the archeological site of Pompeii. In this work, the co-occurrence of different degradation patterns associated with Pompeian cinnabar-containing fresco paintings (alone or in combination with red/yellow ocher pigments) exposed to different types of environments (pre- and post-79 AD atmosphere) is reported. Results obtained from the in situ and laboratory multianalytical methodology revealed the existence of diverse transformation products in the Pompeian cinnabar, consistent with the impact of the environment. The effect of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide emitted during the 79 AD eruption on the cinnabar transformation was also evaluated by comparing the experimental evidence found on paintings exposed and not exposed to the post-79 AD atmosphere. Our results highlight that not all the darkened areas on the Pompeian cinnabar paintings are related to the transformation of the pigment itself, as clear evidence of darkening associated with the presence of manganese and iron oxide formation (rock varnish) on fragments buried before the 79 AD eruption has also been found.

ß-HgS, differing from environmental mercury pollutants (MeHgCl and HgCl2) in chemical form, is used as traditional medicine in Asian countries for thousands of years. In this study, Neuro-2a cells were exposed to ß-HgS, MeHgCl and HgCl2 (5 µM) for 6-24 h. The cell viability of ß-HgS was higher than MeHgCl with 25.9% and 72.4% in 12 h and 24 h respectively. As the incubation time increased, MeHgCl had obvious damage to cell morphology, decreased the ratio of Bcl-2 and Bak and increased the expressions of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1ß significantly. Furthermore, the expressions of IL-1ß and IL-6 in HgCl2 group were increased significantly in 6 h and 24 h. The apoptotic rates in MeHgCl and HgCl2 group were respectively higher than ß-HgS with 32.2% and 7.30% in 24 h. Our findings indicate that ß-HgS is much less neurotoxicity than MeHgCl and HgCl2 in Neuro-2a cells.

Elemental mercury (Hg0) contamination in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities is widespread, and Hg0-contaminated tailings are often reprocessed with cyanide (-CN) to extract residual gold remaining after amalgamation. Hg0 reacts with -CN under aerobic conditions to produce Hg(CN)42- and other Hg(CN)nn-2 complexes. The production of solvated Hg(CN)nn-2 complexes increases upon agitation in the presence of synthetic and authentic Hg0-contaminated tailings that aid in dispersing the Hg0, increasing its reactive surface area. Adult rats were exposed to various concentrations of Hg(CN)2, and accumulation in organs and tissues was quantified using direct mercury analysis. The primary site of Hg(CN)2 accumulation was the kidney, although accumulation was also detected in the liver, spleen, and blood. Little accumulation was observed in the brain, suggesting that Hg(CN)2 complexes do not cross the blood-brain barrier. Renal tissue was particularly sensitive to the effects of Hg(CN)2, with pathological changes observed at low concentrations. Hg(CN)2 complexes are handled by mammalian systems in a manner similar to other inorganic species of Hg, yet appear to be more toxic to organ systems. The findings from this study are the first to show that Hg(CN)2 complexes are highly stable complexes that can lead to cellular injury and death in mammalian organ systems.

Despite of significant progress in remediation of Cr(VI) or Hg(II) pollution by microorganisms, study on the reduction of both Cr(VI) and Hg(II) by the same microbial strain was not reported so far, which is actually important for bioremediation of contaminated sites with multiple heavy metals. In this study, Pseudomonas umsongensis CY-1 was newly isolated from chromium-contaminated soil and showed remediation potentials for both Cr(VI) and Hg(II) pollution. The highest Cr(VI) (93.9%) and Hg(II) (82.8%) reduction rates were obtained at the initial concentration of 5 mg/L. Comparison between removal by resting cells and heat-treated resting cells demonstrated that P. umsongensis CY-1 removed Cr(VI) and Hg(II) from Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.0) mainly through reduction instead of adsorption. By comparing the Cr(VI) and Hg(II) reduction rates of different cellular fractions, it was found that Cr(VI) and Hg(II) reductions mainly happened in the cytoplasm of P. umsongensis CY-1, which were further demonstrated by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Furthermore, analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that the reduction products of Cr(VI) and Hg(II) were mainly in the form of Cr(III) and Hg (0), respectively. The findings in this study will provide a guide for further insights in the bioremediation of contaminated sites with multiple heavy metals.

The density and architecture of leaf veins determine the network and efficiency of water transport within laminae and resultant leaf gas exchange and vary widely among plant species. Leaf hydraulic conductance ( Kleaf) can be regulated by vein architecture in conjunction with the water channel protein aquaporin. However, our understanding of how leaf veins and aquaporins affect leaf hydraulics and stomatal conductance ( gs) remains poor. By inducing blockage of the major veins and inhibition of aquaporin activity using HgCl2, we examined the effects of major veins and aquaporins on Kleaf and gs in species with different venation types. A vine species, with thick first-order veins and low vein density, displayed a rapidly declined gs with high leaf water potential in response to vein blockage and a greatly reduced Kleaf and gs in response to aquaporin inhibition, suggesting that leaf aquaporins are involved in isohydric/anisohydric stomatal behaviour. Across species, the decline in Kleaf and gs due to aquaporin inhibition increased linearly with decreasing major vein density, possibly indicating that a trade-off function between vein architecture (apoplastic pathway) and aquaporin activity (cell-to-cell pathway) affects leaf hydraulics.

The original manuscript of Casanova's Memoirs is stored at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. We have gained access to it and explored the surfaces of chapters one and two (via the ethylene vinyl acetate [EVA] film technology, i.e., of diskettes of ethylene vinyl acetate with embedded strong cation and anion exchangers and C8 resins) in search of potential diseases of the author, especially of the gonorrhea bacterium, since Casanova reported that he had several bouts of this pathology along his adventurous life. Although the bacterium was not found, we have detected high levels of HgS as red spots along the lines of the manuscript, suggesting that Casanova was using this chemical as a cure for his venereal disease. Additionally, among the several bacteria identified on the surface via mass spectrometry, we could detect traces of Streptococcus uberis, a typical animal infection, found also in humans, together with a few strains of Lactobacilli, probably present in his saliva. The EVA film technology appears to open new horizons for investigating the world Cultural Heritage.

Mercury (Hg) is generally considered as a toxic metal; yet the biological outcomes of Hg-containing compounds are highly dependent upon their chemical forms. We hypothesize that mercury sulfide (HgS) is different from HgCl2 and methylmercury (MeHg) in producing intestinal Hg absorption and disruption of gut microbiome. To test this hypothesis, mice were given orally with HgS (α-HgS, 30 mg/kg), Zuotai (ß-HgS, 30 mg/kg), HgCl2 (33.6 mg/kg, equivalent Hg as HgS), or MeHg (3.1 mg/kg, 1/10 Hg as HgS) for 7 days. Accumulation of Hg in the duodenum and ileum after HgCl2 (30-40 fold) and MeHg (10-15 fold) was higher than HgS and Zuotai (~2-fold). HgCl2 and MeHg decreased intestinal intake peptide transporter-1 and Ost-ß, and increased ileal bile acid binding protein and equilibrative nucleoside transporter-1. The efflux transporters ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member-4 (Abcc4), Abcg2, Abcg5/8, and Abcb1b were increased by HgCl2 and to a lesser extent by MeHg, while HgS and Zuotai had minimal effects. Bacterial DNA was extracted and subjected to 16S rDNA sequencing. Operational taxonomic unit (OTU) results showed that among the 10 phyla, HgS increased Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, while HgCl2 increased Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria and decreased Firmicutes; among the 79 families, HgS increased Rikenellaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Helicobacteraceae, and decreased Prevotellaceae, while HgCl2 increased Odoribacteraceae, Porphyromonadaceae, and decreased Lactobacillaceae; among the 232 genus/species, HgS and Zuotai affected gut microbiome quite differently from HgCl2 and MeHg. qPCR analysis with 16S rRNA confirmed sequencing results. Thus, chemical forms of mercury are a major determinant for intestinal Hg accumulation, alterations in transporters and disruption of microbiome.

Realgar and cinnabar are commonly used mineral medicine containing arsenic and mercury in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Angong Niuhuang Wan (AGNHW) is a representative realgar- and cinnabar-containing TCM formula for treating acute ischemic stroke, but its toxicology and neuropharmacological effects are not well addressed. In this study, we compared the neuropharmacological effects of AGNHW and modified AGNHW in an experimental ischemic stroke rat model. Male SD rats were subjected to 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) plus 22 h of reperfusion. Although oral administration of AGNHW for 7 days in the rats increased arsenic level in the blood and liver tissue, there were no significant changes in the arsenic level in kidney, mercury level in the blood, liver and kidney as well as hepatic and renal functions in MCAO rats. AGNHW revealed neuroprotective properties by reducing infarction volume, preserving blood-brain barrier integrity and improving neurological functions against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Interestingly, removing realgar and/or cinnabar from AGNHW abolished the neuroprotective effects. Meanwhile, AGNHW could scavenge peroxynitrite, down-regulate the expression of p47phox, 3-NT and MMP-9 and up-regulate the expression of ZO-1 and claudin-5 in the ischemic brains, which were abolished by removing realgar and/or cinnabar from AGNHW. Notably, realgar or cinnabar had no neuroprotection when used alone. Taken together, oral administration of AGNHW for one week should be safe for treating ischemic stroke with neuroprotective effects. Realgar and cinnabar are necessary elements with synergetic actions with other herbal materials for the neuroprotective effects of AGNHW against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Heavy metal pollution elicits severe environmental concern and health problem worldwide. Mercury is considered as a ubiquitous pollutant due to its versatile application in medicine, industry, and cosmetics. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts greater than 200 nt without protein-encoding function. However, little is known about the mechanism of heavy metals-induced noncoding RNA changes in aquatic organisms. To reveal the epigenetic mechanism of mercury toxicity in zebrafish embryos and explore novel specific mercury-toxicological biomarkers, several well-studied lncRNAs were screened by real-time PCR, and the spatial-temporal expression of lncRNAs biomarker was evaluated by in situ hybridization. The nerve systems of zebrafish embryos were evaluated by detecting locomotor behavior and the expression of neuro-genes. We identified a mercury responsive lncRNA, metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (malat1), among five candidate lncRNAs. HgCl2, MeHg, PbCl2, CdCl2, and K2CrO4 exposure assay showed that malat-1 was a mercury specific induced lncRNAs. Malat1 was highly expressed in the brain region, eyes, and notochord of developing zebrafish embryos after exposure to mercury compounds. HgCl2 showed neurobehavior disturbance and changed neuro-genes expression pattern in zebrafish larvae. This study provides a biological method to detect inorganic or organic mercury using malat1 as a novel biomarker of mercury contamination and also clues for the exploration of neurotoxicity mechanism of mercury compounds.

Online chemically sensitive detectors for size exclusion chromatography (SEC) through coupled setups based on infrared (IR) (or NMR) spectrometers present new possibilities through unprecedented levels of polymer detail with respect to molecular weight and chemical composition. Herein, a new external cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL) mid-IR spectrometer as a chemically sensitive online detector for SEC is custom-designed, built, and tested. This unique spectrometer features multiple broadly tunable EC-QCL sources, which can be operated in continuous wave and pulsed mode, accompanied with balanced liquid nitrogen cooled mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detectors and a new custom-built transmission flow cell. Automated data analysis is done with a self-written MATLAB code. The limit of detection (LOD) is measured online, coupled with SEC chromatography, where on average, one carbonyl functionality in 530 000 g mol-1 at chromatographic conditions for SEC could be detected. It is possible to detect 0.46 µg (LOD) PMMA, which is approximately a factor of 30 lower than that reported for SEC-Fourier transform infrared.

This study provides information on mercury (Hg) localization, speciation and ligand environment in edible mushrooms: Boletus edulis, B. aereus and Scutiger pes-caprae collected at non-polluted and Hg polluted sites, by LA-ICP-MS, SR-µ-XRF and Hg L3-edge XANES and EXAFS. Mushrooms (especially young ones) collected at Hg polluted sites can contain more than 100 µg Hg g-1 of dry mass. Imaging of the element distribution shows that Hg accumulates mainly in the spore-forming part (hymenium) of the cap. Removal of hymenium before consumption can eliminate more than 50% of accumulated Hg. Mercury is mainly coordinated to di-thiols (43-82%), followed by di-selenols (13-35%) and tetra-thiols (12-20%). Mercury bioavailability, as determined by feeding the mushrooms to Spanish slugs (known metal bioindicators owing to accumulation of metals in their digestive gland), ranged from 4% (S. pes-caprae) to 30% (B. aereus), and decreased with increasing selenium (Se) levels in the mushrooms. Elevated Hg levels in mushrooms fed to the slugs induced toxic effects, but these effects were counteracted with increasing Se concentrations in the mushrooms, pointing to a protective role of Se against Hg toxicity through HgSe complexation. Nevertheless, consumption of the studied mushroom species from Hg polluted sites should be avoided.

The development of marine water quality criteria (WQC) in China has been insufficient because data on the toxicity of pollutants for marine organisms based on the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method are lacking. The Chinese aquatic environmental quality standards, including those for seawater, were derived from the developed countries. Therefore, establishing Chinese marine WQC is crucial for identifying the sensitivity of marine species in China and will improve their protection from threats. Mercury (Hg) is one of the primary pollutants commonly exceeding Chinese seawater quality standards. Several countries have developed their marine WQC for inorganic Hg in the past decades, but no study has been conducted in China. In this study, 45 acute toxicity and 14 chronic toxicity data of inorganic Hg on the marine species which inhabit in China were obtained mainly from the ECOTOX database, the CNKI, and the Google Scholar. The acute and chronic hazardous concentrations for 5% of the species (HC5) were calculated based on the best-fit distribution model Sweibull. The criteria for maximum and continuous concentrations of 1.30 and 0.66 µg/L, respectively, for inorganic Hg to protect marine organisms in China were derived by halving the HC5 values. The criteria were comparable to those of the United States, Australia, and the European Union countries, indicating the general applicability of WQCs developed based on the classical SSD method using different species groups. This study may provide valuable information for assessing marine ecological risk in China.

This study aims to reveal the potential relationship between 5-HT and oxidative stress in the organism. Our in vitro experiments in RIN-14B cells showed that anoxia leads the cells to the state of oxidative stress. Administration of exogenous 5-HT exacerbated this effect, whereas the inhibition of Tph1, LP533401 alleviated the oxidative stress. Several research articles reported that Cinnabar (consists of more than 96% mercury sulfide, HgS), which is widely used in both Chinese and Indian traditional medicine prescriptions, has been involved in the regulation of 5-HT. The present research revealed that HgS relieved the level of oxidative stress of RIN-14B cells. This pharmacological activity was also observed in the prescription drug Zuotai, in which HgS accounts for 54.5%, and these effects were found to be similar to LP533401, an experimental drug to treat pulmonary hypertension. Further, our in vivo experiments revealed that the administration of cinnabar or prescription drug Zuotai in zebrafish reduced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by hypoxia and cured behavioral abnormalities. Taken together, in organisms with hypoxia induced oxidative stress 5-HT levels were found to be abnormally elevated, indicating that 5-HT could regulate oxidative stress, and the decrease in the 5-HT levels, behavioral abnormalities after treatment with cinnabar and Zuotai, we may conclude that the therapeutic and pharmacologic effect of cinnabar and Zuotai may be based on the regulation of 5-HT metabolism and relief of oxidative stress. Even though they aren't toxic at the present dosage in both cell lines and zebrafish, their dose dependent toxicities are yet to be evaluated.

The aims of this study were to investigate the occurrence and distribution of total mercury (Hg) and other trace elements of environmental concern, such as arsenic (As), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and vanadium (V), in soils from the abandoned Merník cinnabar mine in eastern Slovakia. For this purpose, thirty soil samples from two depth intervals within the mine area (n = 60 soil samples) and additional sixteen soil samples from adjacent areas (n = 25 soil samples) were collected. Total Hg was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry, while As and other metals were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. High mercury concentrations (> 100 mg/kg with a maximum of 951 mg/kg) were observed only in surface soils close to mine waste heaps and adits. Otherwise, Hg concentrations in the majority of surface soils were lower (0.14-19.7 mg/kg), however, higher than Hg in soils collected from sites outside the mine area (0.19-6.92 mg/kg) and even considerably higher than Hg in soils at sites not influenced by the Merník mine. Elevated Cr and Ni concentrations in soils regardless of their sampling sites (mean of 276 mg/kg and median of 132 mg/kg for Cr and 168 mg/kg and 81 mg/kg for Ni, respectively) were attributed to the lithology of the area; the soils are underlain by the sediments of the Central Carpathian Palaeogene, containing a detritus of ultrabasic rocks. As our geochemical data are compositional in nature, they were further treated by compositional data analysis (CoDA). Robust principal component analysis (RPCA) applied on centred (clr) log-ratio-transformed data and correlation analysis of compositional parts based on symmetric balances distinguished very well different sources of origin for the chemical elements. The following three element associations were identified: Hg association with the main source in mining/roasting, Cr-Ni association derived from bedrock and As-Cu-Mn-Pb-Zn-V association (natural background and minor sulphides/sulfosalts in mineralized rocks). The values of geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor suggested that concentrations of Hg in the soils were influenced by human industrial activities.

Stable Hg isotope analyses are nowadays widely employed to discriminate Hg sources and understand its biogeochemical cycle. Until now, total Hg isotopic compositions have been mainly used but Hg compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) methodologies are emerging. Online Hg-CSIA were limited to samples containing high concentrations, but in this work we overcome this limitation for the measurement of inorganic (IHg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) by gas chromatography hyphenated to multicollector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC/MC-ICPMS) through the use of an automated online preconcentration strategy, allowing injection volumes up to 100 times larger than usual. The preconcentration of Hg species and subsequent transfer to the column were achieved by a programmed temperature vaporization (PTV) injector fitted with a packed liner. The PTV parameters were first optimized using a quadrupole ICPMS, and then its suitability for Hg-CSIA was evaluated with long-term replicate analysis of various standards and reference materials (RMs). The large preconcentration capability enables analyses with Hg concentrations in the organic solvent 2 orders of magnitude lower than the previous conventional GC/MC-ICPMS method, but a compound specific standard bracketing procedure was required for MMHg in order to correct for the differential behavior of Hg species in the liner. The external reproducibility of the method ranged from 0.19 to 0.39 ‰ for Δ199Hg and δ202Hg (as 2 SD, n = 143-167) depending on the species. The analysis of various RMs demonstrated the applicability to environmental samples with species concentrations down to about 150 ng g-1. This new methodology opens the way for a much wider range of online Hg-CSIA measurements that will improve our understanding of the Hg biogeochemical cycle.

Zuotai is a drug containing mercury considered to be the king of Tibetan medicine. The biosafety of Zuotai led people's attention and so far little is known about the toxicity of Zuotai to mast cells. RBL-2H3 cells which used as an alternative model of mast cells were treated with Zuotai, ß-HgS and positive drug Compound 48/80 respectively. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to determine the toxicity of drugs to RBL-2H3 cells. The degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells was studied from ß-hexosaminidase, histamine, interleukin (IL)-4 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). The result showed that Zuotai can affect the cytotoxicity and degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells and the results can provide reference for the toxicity evaluations of Tibetan medicine Zuotai.
